Three friends. Two love stories. One convention.
Charlie likes to stand out. She’s a vlogger and actress promoting her first movie at SupaCon, and this is her chance to show fans she’s over her public breakup with co-star Reese Ryan. When internet-famous cool-girl actress Alyssa Huntington arrives as a surprise guest, it seems Charlie’s long-time crush on her isn’t as one-sided as she thought.
Taylor likes to blend in. Her brain is wired differently, making her fear change. And there’s one thing in her life she knows will never change: her friendship with her best guy friend Jamie—no matter how much she may secretly want it to. But when she hears about a fan contest for her favorite fandom, she starts to rethink her rules on playing it safe.
Queens of Geek, an empowering young adult novel by Jen Wilde, is all about fandom, friendship, and finding the courage to be yourself.
Writing romance kind of found me, in a weird way. Even when I try to write something that I don't intend to be a romance, a love story always finds it's way into it somehow. So I just go with it. Looking deeper than that, I'm definitely influenced by all the John Hughes movies I watched as a teen. The way his movies portray teens and show the light and the dark of life without talking down to his audience . . . just wow. I always keep that in mind when I'm writing.
2. When writing a book, what is your favorite part of the creative process(outline, plot, character names, editing, etc)?
I really buzz with excitement during the early stages of the creative process. Brainstorming, plotting, getting to know my characters is just so much fun. In a really dorky way, it's almost like falling in love.
3. When reading a book, what genre do you find most interesting/intriguing?
I love reading contemporary romance, especially if it's own voices and /or has a queer, diverse cast of characters. Books about geekiness and fandoms too, obviously.
4. If you could co-author with any author, past or present, who would you choose?
Oh wow, that's a tough one. Felicia Day is someone I really admire, and her autobiography is one of my favorite books. I read somewhere that she'd like to try writing fiction one day so I'd love to co-write a geeky YA with her!
5. Have you always wanted to write or did it come to you "later in life"?
I always thought being an author would be amazing, but I just assumed I couldn't write so I never even tried. In my mid-twenties, I decided to give it a try just for fun, and I fell head over heels in love with it. I haven't stopped since!
