Punished by Krys Fenner

Title: Punished
Author: Krys Fenner
Series: Dark Road #2
Genre: Psychological Thriller, Young Adult
Release Date: Late June 2015

Summary:
Hope springs eternal for everyone except Bella Kynaston. She survived the rape, but making it through the trial is another deal all together. As lies come forward, more questions arise leaving Bella to suffer more punishment than she believed she deserved. Sometimes ending it all seems like the only answer. Will she find the peace she so desperately seeks if the pain permanently ended?

Jeremiah believed he’d done the right thing, even if the timing hadn’t been ideal. The only way to protect Bella was if he stayed out of her life. Or so he thought. When Bella starts dating David, Jeremiah thinks David could save her. As it turns out, things progressively get worse. Could Jeremiah be the solution? If so, can he get to her in time? Or will he suffer the worst punishment of his life and lose her forever?

The back of T2 had a wooden porch high enough that most of the city could be viewed from it. Bella was thrilled by the reaction to their performance and took a breath as she stepped outside with David. She had worn exactly what had been picked out earlier. Her tan heels tapped against the wood with every step. As if he was trying to match her, David had on a pair of tan slacks, loafers, and  an untucked white button-up with the sleeves rolled up to his elbows.

Bella smiled. “That was so much fun. And you were good. I’ve heard you sing, but not like that.”

“Thanks, but you were better. I’ll never get tired of hearing your voice.”

“We definitely have to do that again.” When they reviewed the song selection, Bella had relented and allowed David to choose. She hadn’t sung anything in weeks. Of all the songs in the world, he picked
“Meet Me Halfway” by the Black Eyed Peas. Bella liked the song, but David seemed more passionate about it than she had. Regardless, she enjoyed being on stage with him.

“I’m sure I can arrange that.”

They stopped as they approached the edge of the balcony. Bella had worn her hair down. It was the only option that covered the mark. She hated the brand, but aside from a tattoo on the neck nothing could repair the damaged skin. Crisscrossed scythes had been seared into her flesh and she learned to hide the darkened pattern. She leaned on the balcony and glanced to David. “That’d be nice.”

“You okay? You seem a little distracted.”

“Yeah. I just had a hard afternoon.” More like wretched. The only nice part had been sleep, something she attributed to the pills. Those things blissfully knocked her out. Something she longed to do again. The world faded to black quite peacefully on those occasions.

“If you want to go I’ll understand.”

There was a whole lot of I’m sorry included in that comment. And it was all unnecessary. Her eyes snapped up to his. “Go? Why would I want to do that? I’m having fun, and after the day I’ve had, I need that.”

Raising a brow, David reached a hand up and tenderly tucked a loose hair behind her ear. “Do you want to talk about it?”

“It was just one thing after another today. I guess I figured by now I’d catch some kind of break.”

“What happened?”

He genuinely wanted to know and her inability to mention any of the horrible things crushed her spirit. Bella stared out at the view of the city. Rescate County was gorgeous at night. There had to be something she could tell him. “I’m supposed to testify at the trial. It’s difficult to deal with the memories when all I want to do is forget. Go on with my life.”

“I’m not sure there is a way to forget. But I have faith you can move forward. There are a lot of people who care and support you.”

“Yeah. Too bad they can’t face it for me.” Bella smirked. She hadn’t intended to be sarcastic, but it still came out that way. There was a way to forget. It would be a forever kind of forget, so the only thing that lived on would be the memory of her everyone carried.

Off Kilter: a Buffalo Steampunk Adventure by Laura Strickland

Title: Off Kilter: A Buffalo Steampunk Adventure
Author: Laura Strickland
Genre: Steampunk
Release Date: August 28, 2015
Cover Design: Diana Carlile
Editor: Nan Swanson
Summary:
James Kilter has few illusions about himself. Maimed in a boiler accident when young and routinely reviled by those he encounters, he’s no prize for any woman. He’s content working security for a good friend until he sees Catherine Delaney disembark from an airship one May afternoon. Her fragile beauty calls up all his protective instincts. But will she accept a monster as her defender?

Having traded her own safety to save her young sister, Cat Delaney has landed in the hands of a ruthless, wealthy man who intends to use her as a pawn to his avarice. Alone in a strange city, she has nowhere to turn except to the very man hired to keep her from running. Can she trust James, with his ruined face and crusader’s spirit? Dare she give him her heart?

James switched his gaze to the three people who had just disembarked, two men and a woman, and promptly lost all the breath in his body.

They made an unlikely enough trio—one of the men willowy and slender, clad in a splendid suit that screamed wealth, the other broad and squat if also well-dressed. James dismissed both of them almost immediately, for the third of the group gathered all his attention and focused it the way a mirror gathers light.

"That his doxy?" Latham persisted.

She wore one of the new tailored gowns of some thin fabric that fluttered around her slender body in the breeze off the water. Strawberry-blonde hair clustered round her head in a woven crown of curls and even from fifty paces away James could see the delicate perfection of her features. She stood between the two men like a doe trapped by wolves, and something about her demeanor bespoke the fact that she longed to flee. Suddenly James wanted to tear the two men apart with his bare hands, rescue her, change her world. He knew he could do it too; at that moment he could best anyone.

"Nice piece," Latham muttered. "Wouldn't mind the job of guarding that."

And just as abruptly, James wanted to tear Latham apart also, a visceral reaction that flowed from the core of his being outward to his fists.

"Button it," Tate snapped before James could. "That's our client, Mr. Sebastian Boyd—one of the wealthiest men you'll ever meet."

And with him, James amended in his head, the most beautiful woman he'd ever hoped to behold.

Paradise Forgiven by Natalie E Wrye

Title: Paradise Forbidden
Author: Natalie E. Wyre
Genre: New Adult Romantic Suspense/Mystery
Release Date: August 28, 2015
Summary:
When Trevor Cassidy steps foot on a bus to "Nowhere," Tennessee, he boards with a singular purpose: to leave the life he led behind.

A desolate girl on the ride catches his eye, but he wants almost nothing to do with the ten-foot invisible wall that she's built around herself.

But when calamity strikes deep inside the Tennessee forest, Trevor and the lonely girl, Kat, must learn to trust each other if they want to make it back to civilization intact.

Breaking down Kat's walls will prove to be the hardest thing Trevor's ever done, and on top of that...she's hiding something: something that may threaten their very existence, their dwindling survival.

But how does Trevor uncover Kat's hidden agenda without bringing his own to light?

I nod, never breaking eye contact. And how could I? With Trevor looking at me like that, there’s no chance that I can move, let alone breathe.

Every time our gazes cross, a shift takes place. It moves the air around us: swirling and circling, interlacing and enclosing. It weaves through us, wrapping us to each other: binding us… with this… need.

I can see in Trevor’s eyes all that I feel.

The apprehension. The latent confusion. That undeniable… need.

And there it is again: that needling… annoying… disturbing and somehow strangely consuming sentiment that we need each other. I don’t want to need Trevor. I don’t need him to need me, either.

Whatever it is that exists between the two of us, it is inescapable: invisible but potent. We’re two stars on a collision course, orbiting each other, dancing around another… until the inevitable happens.

A cosmic boom that threatens to rain destruction... or beautiful stardust, and I’m not sure which it will be, so I make a decision right then and right there.

The decision… to get out.

Get out while I still can: while I can spare us both the explosion that is bound to happen. While I can avoid the disappointment that will ultimately follow.

While I can spare myself Trevor’s discovery of my deceit.

The 52nd by Dela

Title: The 52nd
Author: Dela
Genre: Young Adult Paranormal
Release Date: October 27, 2014
Summary:
Not one of the sacrifices chosen over the long history had survived–until now.

On the tip of the Yucatan peninsula, the immortal Castillo family gathers in Tulum. Weary and haunted, they receive the names of fifty-two human sacrifices chosen once every fifty-two years for the Underworld, a tradition thought to have disappeared with the fall of the Aztec and Mayan empires.

Driving home one night, college freshman Zara Moss swerves to avoid hitting a ghastly figure in the road. Lucas Castillo witnesses the car crash, but when it comes time to supervise her abduction from the wreckage, he intervenes. Something is different about Zara: Lucas has been having dreams of her arrival for five hundred years.

As Lucas and Zara come together to put an end to the bloody sacrifices, they discover that the ancient tradition isn’t so easily broken. The gods are angry, and they have until the Winter Solstice to drag Zara to the Underworld.

“LOOK OUT!” she screamed, pointing to the front window.

A black figure stood in the beam of our headlights. I slammed my foot on the brakes, but they locked and the car began to skid. The smell of burning rubber filled the car as we screeched across the asphalt. The man didn’t move, and as we neared him, I cranked the wheel to the right as fast as possible to avoid him. We screamed as the car spun out of control.

As we skidded closer to the unmoving figure, I thought he was done for. I expected him to bounce up onto the windshield and shatter the window into thousands of tiny pieces. But the briefest second before impact, my door rushing directly at him, I saw—
It was not a man.

* * * * *

Suddenly, looking at Zara made my throat swell, and I started to choke. It was time to take the plunge. I focused on turning onto the hidden road, lowering my speed as the track turned to mud. I felt sick saying this.

“Zara, I didn’t come to Tahoe to save you.”

I let there be silence, but I wished I hadn’t. Even with the small rocks banging against the undercarriage, I could still hear her when she gulped, eyes not budging from my face.

* * * * *

A mortal life was simple. Wake, eat, and dream. I had never cared about losing that cycle when I changed, but I did now. Watching Zara made me miss its simplicity. She was a pretty sleeper, and the desire for there to be an us worsened a deep-rooted fear. I could get lost in her, and I would lose sight of the consequence of what I was doing... and I, or she—or both of us—could get killed. I would have to break with tradition first, without any blood; otherwise I feared she would never forgive me for what I’d done to be free of it. War and killing came easy for me because of my past, not so much for her. She was too fragile, too clean to be involved in or even equipped with a way to cope with the ugliness. I had to protect her from that, or I fear the hurt would be unfixable.
