The Heist
Weaving his bike at the sharp bends in the narrow road on the way to the Martinez mansion, Xavier mulled over the fine details of his agreement to their job offer.  He didn’t notice the vehicle hurtling towards him in the opposite direction, and he hadn’t factored in that the sun was just rising.  He most definitely didn’t expect that the driver of the other vehicle seemed to have a death wish.

The rising sun bounced off the windshield of the oncoming vehicle, blinding Xavier momentarily. As he swerved to the right he felt his front wheel dip, and he flew over the handlebars of his bike as it slid under the front wheels of the offending vehicle. Lying in the bushes at the side of the road, Xavier checked himself over to ensure he wasn’t bleeding or broken, and slowly stood up.  Making his way over the now stationary vehicle, he curled his hand into a fist and punched through the driver’s window, pulling out the driver.  As he was about to make chowder out of his face, he noticed that the driver’s feet were dangling off the ground.

He then noticed that he was a she.  A very small she.

“What do you think you are playing at, female? You could have killed me!” Narrowing his eyes, Xavier dangled the female in front of him.

“I was driving my car - you crashed into me you prick so don’t ask me what I was playing at!” Alicia glared at the huge male that had her suspended in the air, her boots hovering as he gripped her tightly by the shoulders.

“Help me! Help me! He’s trying to kidnap me!”

Alicia started screaming at the top of her voice as she looked up at the most unusual shade of green eyes that she had ever seen.  A small smirk started to appear on her lips and she began to deliberately sway herself like a pendulum in the brute’s hold.

Slapping a gloved hand over the screeching female’s mouth, Xavier lowered her to the ground, giving her a warning look before removing his hand.

“Kidnap you? You are out of your goddamn mind?” Xavier growled low as he moved away from her to survey the damage she’d done to his bike. Crouching down, his hands caressed it like a lover and he looked back at her, his face full of fury.

“You were driving like a maniac and nearly totalled my damn bike,” he said clicking his fingers then opening his palm out. “Your insurance details. Now!”

“The sun hit off my windshield for the love of the gods! I swerved as I was momentarily blinded - you must have been coming around the bends too fast!  Where did you say you got your licence? A Kinder egg?”

Alicia stood looking down at the male. He looked to her like he was having an emotional breakdown over the now twisted piece of metal. Her hand moved, but not to give him any piece of paper with her details.  Her left hand reached into her jacket pocket where she pulled out a lolly, unwrapped it, and popped it in her mouth before turning and proceeding to walk back to her car.

Never. Never in his adult life had anyone addressed him like this - especially not a pixie sized female with the driving skills of a kamikaze.  Xavier’s jaw nearly hit the ground as she smart mouthed him, then casually stood at the roadside sucking on the candy. It was only then that Xavier got a good look at her. The rising sun had illuminated her outline and his eyes took their time, checking her out from feet to head.

She was slender, but her curves were in all the right places. Her long auburn hair tumbled over her shoulders and her big brown eyes seemed to look right into his soul.  Her full pouting lips were taunting him with that damn candy. Almost forgetting why he was pissed off with her, he shook his head and focused.

“The sun was in my direction, so there’s no way it could’ve blinded you. Besides, you were steaming down that road like a bat out of hell. Now, I’m not in the habit of repeating myself - your insurance details.” His jaw ticked as he faced up to this little female with the huge attitude. Usually his sheer size and no nonsense approach had people running in the opposite direction, not trying to go head to head with him.  This was a new experience for him, and he was pretty sure he didn’t like it.

Using her thumb and forefinger to gently tug on the stick of the lolly, Alicia removed the candy from her lips, her hand moving as she addressed the giant with the vibrant green eyes and blond hair, strands of which had come loose from his ponytail.

“And I am not in the habit of giving my personal details out to hooligans that crash into me and then blame me for their reckless driving!  Look…neither of us were hurt so what’s the problem here? You go your way and I’ll go my way, simples.”

Exasperated, Xavier was for the first time in his life stuck for words.  This small female was facing up to him - and winning! Twice he’d demanded her details, and both times she shot him down without as much as a blink.

“Sweetcheeks,” his voice lowered as he stood up to tower over her, “you damaged my bike through your dodgem-car style driving.  If you don’t have insurance then you can give me the cash up front to fix it, yeah?”

Xavier had no need for the money, he was wanting to scare the female into providing her details. It wasn’t so much about fixing his bike anymore as much as…he just had to know her name.  He’d never met anyone quite like her and as much as she irritated him, there was something about her stubbornness and conviction that intrigued him.

Alicia’s words came out through her gritted teeth. “Please! ‘Please may I have your insurance details ma’am?’ Manners seem to be very much lacking in you don’t they, sir?” she said, thinking to herself that he did not just refer to her as ‘Sweetcheeks’!

The Warrior
Shuggie stood in front of the doors to the medical bay barring Teodora from entering.

“Ye cannae go in there Doc – it’s no safe fur any of us.” His voice was grim and his face set in stone. He was still trying to process what he had just witnessed, and was glad for once that the youngling had taken off on her own. To see with her own eyes what he had seen may very well have broken her mentally. As it was, he wasn’t sure if he was losing his marbles. “What dae ye huv in yer hands, Doc?” nodding to indicate the file that she was holding tightly.

Teodora tried to peek around Shuggie but his sheer size was blocking her from doing so. “I ran off to do some tests, but from the way you are all acting I believe my findings have already happened yes? The wolf is in the bay, I presume Lieutenant?” Teodora always addressed Shuggie professionally when her staff or the Commander's unit were present.

“No jist any wolf, Doc…” His granite features fixed on Teodora, and the ink on his body was glowing like oil on water. “...he’s a fucking monster.” Shuggie stood to one side, but his arm was still outstretched preventing Teodora being able to move any further.

“Super Hybrid is the term you are looking for Lieutenant, his ‘lazy wolf syndrome’ mixed with Alicia’s blood has created something not even I have ever seen. Where is Alicia now?” The scientist part of Teodora’s brain was starting to pique and she wanted inside that bay to assess this ‘super wolf’. This was ground-breaking research for her and she wasn’t wanting to miss the opportunity of a lifetime.

From inside the bay, Shuggie heard the loudest wolf-howl he had experienced in his thousands of years, and it made the whole area shake like a mini-earthquake. “Jesus fucking Christ!” Turning his head in slow motion, he made eye contact with the ‘Beast’ for the first time, but he was still talking to Teodora. “Super hybrid ye say? So with yer sayin’ is that the youngling’s blood has mutated the Commander’s DNA?” Both watched as the enormous wolf started towards them.

The sounds of screams and people fleeing for their lives echoed around the compound as Teo and Shuggie stood conversing about the findings of the blood work. Xavier was heading towards them, but the Doctor was transfixed at what she was seeing. He was enormous! The howling and barking noises he was making triggered a thought in her head as she spoke to Shuggie. “He’s trying to communicate with us.”

“Nae shit, Sherlock,” Shuggie muttered under his breath.

“What the fuck are they looking at? I know I’m fuck handsome, but take a goddamn picture and be done with it, yeah?” Xavier was grumpy. Not that he wanted parades and statues in his honour – but still, his best friend was standing having a heart to heart with the Doc as his employees stood around gawking. “And where the fuck is Sweetcheeks?” The least she could have done was be here to welcome him back to terra firma.

Unless.

What if she had been injured or killed and that was what Shuggie and the Doc were arguing about? “Get fucking in here Lieutenant!” He barked the order.

He didn’t realise that he had literally ‘barked’ the order.

The Lies
“When will you be home? It’s been four months Xav, four months of searching for Dory, and I only get you for a day—two if I’m lucky—then you're off again!” Alicia whined as she cradled her cell to her ear. She never knew when Xavier would call, so it was on the loudest tone possible and practically glued to her hand.

Xavier popped a stick of gum in his mouth as he listened to Alicia, kicking Shuggie in the ass to get him out of the room so he had some privacy. Ignoring the Scotsman’s complaints, he turned his attention back to his call. “Sweetcheeks...” he had lowered his voice, and was laying on the charm, “...shut up, yeah. It’s quantity not quality.” Grinning, he stretched his long legs out and laid back in his seat, closing his eyes and imagining that his female was sitting opposite him. “Look, we are making real progress on the whereabouts of the Doc, but I’m having to manage psycho-Scot here who wants to napalm any fucker called Tony or Mabel, yeah? Anyway, let’s not waste the time we’ve got. What are you wearing?” His grin had turned into a wicked smirk.

Xavier and Shuggie had left Alicia shortly after their fortified compound hidden in the South of France had been attacked. They were mercenaries–highly trained military operatives who also had the enviable qualities of being supernatural beings—Shuggie, Scottish vampire warrior and Xavier who was a super hybrid werewolf. Alicia was a unique species of vampire called Sanguin Solis and as such was a valuable prize for those who would hunt her down–she had the ability to walk in the sunlight. The intruders were a sadistic sorcerer named Anthony Hills III who had been Doctor Teodora Valdez-MacAndrew’s former employer and Shuggie’s torturer, and Mabel—Alicia’s ‘Maker’ and as insane as they come. In the midst of the attack, Shuggie’s new wife Teodora had been kidnapped, mistaken for Alicia. There had been no communication from the kidnappers of Teodora since.

“Just promise me you’ll be here for opening night, if you miss it I will flash to where you are and kill you for real this time!” Alicia popped a lolly in her mouth as Frazzle was lying stretched out over her thighs. “I’m wearing your hoody and a pair of shorts...why, you weirdo?”

Xavier heard the candy wrapper, and let out a low growl. “Keep sucking like that and I’ll come on opening night...and every other night of the week!” Laughing, he sat up, trying not to think too much about her sitting there in only his top and a pair of shorts. “Is everything alright there, Sweetcheeks, Hawkeye behaving himself?” Sergeant Ciaran “Hawkeye” Paterson was one of Xavier’s most loyal soldiers, and the Irishman owed his life to his Commander. Unlike the rest of Xavier’s unit, Hawkeye had been recently included into the inner circle and was now keeper of their secret supernatural abilities. It had taken him some time to get his head around the fact that humans interacted unknowingly with vampires, werewolves and the like, but he was always a professional. Although his nickname was Hawkeye, due in part to his precise eye for detail, Alicia always called him Patcheye and she was the only one to call him by the moniker. Hawkeye never questioned it–he took the name as a badge of honour, as he had noted that Alicia never got anyone’s name right if she liked them. Xavier had left the day to day security of Alicia with Hawkeye and had several calls with him daily on how she was doing, but she didn’t need to know that. He wanted Alicia to feel as though she was in charge when he was gone, even though he left absolutely nothing to chance where her safety was concerned.

“Want to suck my lolly?” Alicia let out a laugh as she rearranged her body on their bed, so she was lying further down. “All’s cool here. I spent the day in Italy at the new place, it looks freaking awesome and yes Patcheye is behaving, although he’s no fun! He doesn’t argue with me like you do!” Although Hawkeye’s eye had fully healed after having it broken by Xavier’s fist some months back, Alicia had remained calling him Patcheye. “How is Hugh really doing?”

Opening his eyes, Xavier rolled his shoulders and exhaled slowly. “The mad bastard is grouchier than me, and that’s fucking saying something. ‘Course he’s worried about Teo—just married and then losing her to the sociopath Tony? Not the honeymoon he was planning, yeah? As I said, we’re making good progress and should be able to make a move soon. I just hope there’s something worth saving when we finally get there…” His tone had turned serious, and although he was trying to shield Alicia from exactly what was happening, he knew she was no fool and couldn’t hide everything from her.

Hearing Xavier’s tone change from playful to serious, Alicia knew not to ask. She knew damn fine well Xavier would tell her if she asked, but there were some things she just didn’t need to know. She wanted Dory back alive but then she also knew what the thing she referred to as her creator was capable of. Tony Hills, on the other hand, was just a random to her—albeit one that tried along with Mabel to kidnap her. A shudder coursed through Alicia at the thought of ‘her’ name.

“Look after him Xav, his wife is missing and if it were me? You’d be fucking psychotic.”

The wolf in Xavier reared up the instant that visual was put into his head. Psychotic would be his ‘relaxed’ state if anything happened to Alicia. Not wanting to go down that route he answered, “Will do, Sweetcheeks. Don’t worry, I never leave one of my own and not about to start now. Besides, the sooner I get this mission over with the sooner I can be on top of you.” He never wanted his female stressed or harassed. He protected her from everything, including worry.

Alicia let out a purr. “Mmm, under you sounds like heaven, Commander Prick. I just want our family all together like we should be! Right you, get some sleep, Ti Amo.”

“No sleep for me, Sweetcheeks.” Xavier hated ending calls to Alicia, but tonight seemed to hit him harder than usual for some reason. “Don’t forget to scream my name tonight, yeah?” then hung up abruptly. If he didn’t, he knew he’d be ordering his Lieutenant to flash him back to their compound tonight and to hell with the mission to save Teo.

Sighing to herself, Alicia slipped off the bed. “Ready to go to work baby?” Frazzle leaped from the covers and ran to the door. “Easy leopard, I have to get ready first” Walking over to where the Bengal tiger was waiting, she opened the door telling her beloved pet to go and get Hawkeye. Wherever they went, Frazzle went too.

Chapter 1
I was born and raised in New York City. Every day, I’m amazed by the breathtaking landscape and awe-inspiring skyline. The Big Apple is, truly, a city that never sleeps. Bright lights, honking taxicabs, and noise are present twenty-four/seven, but somehow, in the midst of all that hustle and bustle and crowded chaos, I found my soulmate. Gazing down at my glittering diamond engagement ring, I couldn’t stop smiling.
Jake Connors lived in the Bronx, the son of a housekeeper who worked for a multimillionaire business tycoon. His mother’s boss used his personal connections and whipped out his checkbook to help Jake enroll at the same elite private school where I was a student. Jake was smart, but he still had T-R-O-U-B-L-E written all over him. In school, he was reprimanded numerous times and even suspended twice. If it wasn’t for his benefactor’s connections, he would have been thrown out right on his naughty butt.
Bad boys are irresistible (as any private school girl, teacher’s pet, or preacher’s daughter will tell you), so of course it wasn’t long before Jake and I fell madly in love against my parents’ wishes, and the rest is history.
At the ripe old age of twenty, I was about to begin my life as Mrs. Jake Connors. Butterflies fluttered in my stomach, and excitement and nerves washed through me like a tidal wave. Matchbox Twenty’s  “Overjoyed” played softly in the background, one of the songs on the playlist I’d put together just for that morning. I loved the way the beading from my wedding gown sparkled under the bright lights of the church.
I pulled the lace material down over my shoulders and turned to gaze at Nadia, my best friend since childhood. Her long blonde hair was twisted and woven into an elegant and elaborate up-do, and her sapphire-blue silk dress and matching heels was a stunning ensemble.
A tear rolled down her face as she adjusted my veil and diamond tiara. “There. You look perfect, just like Cinderella,” she said, wiping her eyes. “I know I promised I wouldn’t cry, but I’m so happy that your fairytale is finally coming true.”
I gushed with emotion. “I’ve dreamt about this moment my entire life.”
Her brown eyes gleamed. “I know. You’re gonna be Mrs. Ashly Connors!” she squealed, clapping her perfectly manicured hands together.
I couldn’t stop grinning. “I’ve never loved anyone the way I love Jake.”
“And you’re putting all those doubters to rest.”
“I know. Everyone swore we’d never make it, yet here we are, about to walk down the aisle!” Tears welled up, and I started fanning my face. “This is the happiest day of my life.”
She reached for a tissue. “Don’t cry. You’ll ruin your makeup that I spent so long trying to get just right.”
“I-I can’t help it,” I said, sniffling and in a trembling voice. “I’ve never ever been this happy and excited.”
“This is just the beginning,” Nadia said. “You two are going to have a fabulous life together.”
I smiled. “We are, aren’t we?”
“Definitely!” she said, squeezing my hands in reassurance.
Grinning, my cousin walked in with a dozen red roses. “Looks like somebody sent the bride flowers.”
I lit up. “They’re beautiful,” I said, taking the bouquet to read the card.
“Well? Who sent them?” Nadia asked curiously.
I shot her the widest grin. “Who else? They’re from Jake. The card says he’s dreamt of this day forever, and that he can’t wait for our lives to begin together as husband and wife.”
“Aw!” Nadia said. “That’s so sweet.”
A tear rolled down my cheek. “Is he here yet? I have to go thank him.”
“No way, young lady!” Nadia scolded. “As your maid of honor, it is my duty to make sure he doesn’t see you before the ceremony. It’s bad luck, and we can’t have that.”
“Then have him come to the door, and I’ll open it just a crack.”
“He’s not here yet,” my cousin informed me.
“What!?” My jaw dropped. “He was supposed to be here an hour ago. I just assumed he was with all the groomsmen, because the photographer said he was heading that way to get some pictures. Where do you think—”
“I’m sure he’ll be here any minute,” my cousin said, cutting me off before I went off into a full-blown panic. “I’ll go look for him and tell him his beautiful bride is waiting.”
I plastered on a fake smile as she turned around and left. “Hey, Nadia, can you do me a huge favor?” I asked. “Can you tell Jim I need to talk to him?”
She lightly patted my shoulder. “Harassing the best man isn’t gonna get your groom here any quicker.”
“I know, but…I just know Jake would never be late—not for this. Where’s my cell phone?” I asked, frantically digging through my purse. I looked back up at Nadia. “Do you think anything happened, that something came up or—”
“Calm down, Ashly,” she said in a soft tone. “I’m sure he’s fine. He’s probably planning some kind of romantic last-minute surprise.”
“You’re right. I need to calm down,” I said, taking deep breaths, “but I can’t. Where the heck is my phone anyway?” I asked, anxiously darting my eyes all around the room. I set the flowers down and smiled when my cell phone rang.
Nadia picked it up from the table. “Here. It was right where you left it.”
     “I’m such a scatterbrain.”
“Well, it’s excusable today. You’re a bride with a million things running through that pretty little head of yours.” She glanced down with a huge smile. “Put all your worries to rest. It’s Jake.”
“Oh, thank goodness.” I breathed a sigh of relief as I reached for the phone. “Jake!” I squealed in excitement. “I got the flowers! They’re just gorgeous.”
When he didn’t say anything, I felt a sinking feeling in the pit of my stomach.
“Why aren’t you here yet? And where the heck are you? The ceremony starts in less than thirty minutes.”
“Ashly, uh…there’s something I need to tell you,” as he awkwardly said the words no woman would want to hear on her wedding day.
I clenched my hands into tight fists; something in his voice made me really nervous. “Jake, what’s wrong?”
     “I’m so sorry, but…look, I-I just can’t do this.”
Confusion and shock overwhelmed me. Through the fog in my mind, it took me a minute to realize what he was actually saying. “What do you mean?”
“I can’t make it,” he said in a grim tone.
I tried to process his words, but everything had begun to spin around me, as if I was caught in some nightmarish hurricane. “What do you mean you can’t make it? And why are you so nonchalant?      This isn’t just some Superbowl get-together with your buddies, Jake! It’s our wedding!”
     Silence was his only response.
“Babe, are you just getting cold feet or what?” I asked in a panicked voice. “Tell me you aren’t seriously considering backing out and leaving me at the alt—”
“Ashly, I’m not ready to get married. I’ve been thinking about it hard. I’m only twenty years old, and I’m not sure if I’m ready for all of this—for any of it, really.”
Shock flooded over me, and every square inch of me, inside and out, seemed to crumble, as if I’d been hit by a Mack truck. “So you tell me thirty minutes before you’re supposed to walk down the aisle? What am I supposed to tell everyone?”
     “I’m sorry.”
“I love you, Jake. I love you so much. Please don’t do this.”
He didn’t even bother returning those three precious words.
My hand trembled as I held the phone. “We need to talk face to face. I at least deserve that, don’t you think?”
     “I’ve gotta go,” he whispered.
“Baby, please don’t! Jake!” I begged.
     Click.
My heart lurched. I frantically called him back, but it just rang and rang. “C’mon, Jakey. Please pick up!” I shouted. A second later, my panic had turned to anger. “Pick up the damn phone.” With shaky fingers, I texted him: “U have 2 talk 2 me!”
“It’s over. I’m sorry. I think it’s best if U never call this # again.”
As I gazed down at the heartless, dismissive text, I screamed. The thought of never talking to him again, of never seeing him again, of him not sliding that ring on my finger tore me in two.
     “What’s wrong?” Nadia asked.
Overcome with a rollercoaster of emotions, I threw my cell phone, shattering it against the wall. “He’s backing out. Jake’s not coming.”
“What?” she questioned in complete disbelief. “Where is he?”
My breath hitched in my throat.
     “Ashly?”
“I-I don’t know.” My heart was beating a million times a minute. “He’s not coming,” I repeated, my voice barely able to tremble out the words.
She gripped my shaking hands. “What do you mean?”
“He’s pulling the plug on our wonderful life,” I barely choked out, “and he just told me to never contact him again.”
     “That’s crazy,” she retorted. “Why?”
“He says he can’t…that he’s not ready,” I gasped between sobs. “I feel like I’ve just been hit by a semi, and I didn’t even see it coming!”
“He’s despicable!” Nadia shouted, pulling me into a close embrace.
Emotion flooded through me, more like a monsoon this time, and I let out a sob so loud I was sure the entire church had heard it. I’d never felt pain and grief rip through me like that. How could he dump me at the altar? He couldn’t have told me this last night, before all the guests came, before I got all dressed up like some stupid fairytale princess in this ridiculous dress? Who needs all these beads and lace anyway?
I shouted. I cursed. I cried. He was everything I wanted and more, and now I’d never have him.
No, no, no, no, no, no, no, no! Brides are supposed to run away, not grooms! Didn’t he ever see that Julia Roberts movie?
     I couldn’t breathe.
I fell into a pit of despair as my world crashed down around me. I couldn’t help wondering what the heck had happened. We’d seen each other the night before, and everything had seemed fine, perfect as always. As usual, we couldn’t stop staring into each other’s eyes. When we talked about the wedding, he’d seemed more excited than me. As a matter of fact, it was all he talked about, and he said more than once that he couldn’t wait to see me in my wedding dress. I thought we shared such a deep connection, that we’d forever be madly in love. Why would he just throw it all away? For what? Why? And why won’t he even talk to me about it?
     “Nadia,” I said, sniffling.
     “Yeah? What is it, sweetie?”
“I’ve changed my mind. This is the absolute worst day of my life.”
* * *
Weeks passed, and I continued to mourn my loss of Jake. Every breath and movement took effort. Some days, the pain was so overwhelming that I couldn’t breathe, couldn’t think, couldn’t function, and couldn’t control the tears. No one understood what I was going through, but everyone tried to be of some comfort on the rough days, and I appreciated that. On other days, I felt like I could manage. I hardly ate and woke up in cold sweats left over from my nightmares. I knew I’d never get over the loss of Jake dumping me, and I’d learned the hard lesson that in the blink of an eye, one’s whole world could take a swan dive; the elevator from heaven to hell was a fast-moving one. One minute, my life had been perfect. I’d been a princess with her Prince Charming. Then, in the next, I was a damsel in distress all over again. How will I ever move forward? I wondered. My heart was torn.
Sometimes the grief was so paralyzing that I had to remind myself to breathe. I knew there was no roadmap to get me through the throes of pain, but I hated that it hurt so damn much and for so damn long.
“I love you, Jake…and I miss you,” I whispered. “Not a minute goes by when I don’t think about you,” I muttered, recalling his beautiful face, those captivating features that I missed so much.
Everyone told me it would get easier in time, but it hadn’t—not after all those weeks. Knowing I’d never feel Jake’s touch, see his beaming smile, or hear his laugh again was almost unbearable. I missed the way he said my name, and it pained me that I wouldn’t feel his hand in mine. I’d never be able to look into his beautiful blue eyes again. There would be no more romantic dinners under the stars, no more slow dances, no more romantic birthday celebrations. All of that had been stolen away from me, leaving a giant, gaping hole in my heart.
I could still hear his voice in my head, could still feel his touch. It was something like that old country song I’d heard on the radio somewhere: I couldn’t stop loving him. I simply didn’t have the strength. As I went through his clothes, I could still smell him. All of my senses told me that he was right there in that room with me, that nothing had changed, but it had. It had all changed for the worst.

Summary:
In a world torn apart by war, three nations stand divided.

The Free Nation
Senator Burton and his son Ben arrive in the Tula strongholds for peace talks, but find that a treaty between the two nations has a price. Confronted by a world of sedate tranquility the two men are appalled to learn that the Tula Council rules with an iron rod of fear and repression. The Council removes anyone who dares to stand in the way of their reforms and Ben uncovers a secret that puts his life in danger.

The Tula
Astra has been pressured into working for the very Council that threatens to kill her loved ones. No stranger to loss, the precariously balanced world she has constructed begins to fracture when Ben starts asking difficult questions about her past. As her deepest secrets are uncovered, Astra finds there are secrets in her childhood that even she is unaware of.

The Una
Kai is Apprentice Headman to the Una people. Unaccountably called upon to sacrifice his honour in the name of peace, Kai's hatred toward this injustice proves all consuming. If the time comes, will he be able to forgive the woman that betrayed him?

When these three worlds collide ugly truths come to light on every side. Is there any way to make peace, or will the world end in discord.

“I thought you looked thirsty, Mr. Burton.”

Ben turned to find Councillor Sendel holding out a champagne flute toward him and accepted it with a light hearted smile.

“How has Astra been treating you?” asked Councillor Sendel conversationally.

“With the length of her arm between us,” grimaced Ben.

Councillor Sendel chuckled softly.

“I'm not surprised. I hear she took you to the library?”

Ben turned to find Sendel smiling softly at him over his glass. Ben felt a prickle of unease work its way over his skin.

How did Councillor Sendel know what he and Astra had done during the day?

Ben tried to shake off his discomfort. After all it had been no secret that he and Astra were to explore the city together.

“I guess she doesn’t like me much.” He watched Sendel take another sip of champagne. “By the way, congratulations: three terms is very impressive.”

Councillor Sendel appeared to have trouble swallowing and Ben suddenly felt his sharp gaze upon him.

“Thank you,” he bowed, “but compared to Corbani’s five terms it is nothing to boast of.”

Ben nodded.

“I hear he had no opposition for the last three terms.”

Councillor Sender’s smile had a chilling undertone.

“Yes, he was only opposed during his two opening terms.” He paused significantly. “He won the first election of course.”

Ben knew what was expected of him and turned to Councillor Sendel with the obvious question.

“What about the second?”

Councillor Sendel smiled again, pleased to see that Ben knew how the game was played.

“It was a great tragedy; Meron Va Dic Padis was the opposition that year but before the polls could take place he and his whole family died in a tragic accident.” Sendel’s eyes met Ben’s. “Of course, Corbani hasn’t been opposed since.”

Ben understood completely and had to suppress a shiver. He had guessed that Councillor Ladron was ruthless but having it confirmed made him feel sick.

“I dare say that Councillor Ladron fills his role so well that no one sees the need for change,” replied Ben evenly.

“Oh, Corbani is very good at keeping… things… in their proper place,” agreed Councillor Sendel. “A man would have to have friends in high places if he wished to oppose him.”

Ben met Sendel's gaze unflinchingly.

“Like Senators and their sons for instance?”

He smiled.

“You think in such small terms, Mr. Burton: any highly placed friends would do.” He placed his hand on his heart and inclined his head but before he left he smiled again.

“I hope you enjoyed Jayn’s coffee, Mr. Burton.”

Ben clutched his champagne flute so tightly that the stem broke in his hand and several shards pierced his palm.

It seemed that Councillor Ladron was not the only one of the councillors with an agenda. Councillor Sendel appeared to covet Corbani Va Dic Ladron’s position and was hoping that the Free Nation would help him attain his ends.

Ben was fully aware that he had just been threatened. If there was one thing a Burton didn’t react well to it was threats and he’d been in the receiving end of too many tonight.

“You’re bleeding.”

“What?”

The newcomer held out a napkin toward Ben.

“Your hand, it’s bleeding.”

Ben made no move to take the napkin from her, so after a small pause she took his hand between her own and, removing the flute from his grasp, studied his palm carefully.

“I don’t think there is any glass in the wound,” she remarked, inspecting his hand closely before wrapping the napkin around his palm and tying the ends in a knot. “You should have it seen to, though.”

Ben watched her hands as they folded the bandage neatly.

“Thank you, Leda.”

For a moment she stilled and when Ben looked up it was to find her regarding him pensively.

“You have a good memory,” she remarked.

“Or maybe you’re just hard to forget,” replied Ben.

Leda raised an eyebrow, her expression unimpressed.

“Did you enjoy lunch with my sister?”

The question threw him, shaking him out of his calm and making his next words surprised.

“Astra is your sister?”

Ben frowned annoyed by the gauche betrayal of his feelings.

Leda nodded pushing the dark curls flirting with her jaw line behind her ear.

“Actually she’s my stepsister,” she responded in the same laconic voice.

Ben studied her face trying to decide how she felt about Astra. Leda had large eyes, amber but with light green flecks, fringed with long lashes and a sprinkling of freckles over her nose that gave her an almost childlike sweetness. Her dress was black and Ben thought that she was probably four or five inches taller than Astra.

But something about her was reminiscent of Astra. Ben couldn’t put his finger on what it was. Almost everything about her was the opposite of her sister: her bold manner, her physical appearance and athletic build.

“Why wouldn’t Astra introduce us at the restaurant?”

Leda shrugged.

“She was probably terrified that I would say something highly inappropriate... so she told me to get lost.”

“And would you have? Said something inappropriate I mean?”

“Judging by our conversation so far, I would say her worry was entirely justified,” she returned.

Ben was silent for a moment.

“She didn’t want me to know you were her sister?”

Leda raised her glass to him in a silent toast.

“Seems like you’re not as stupid as you look.”

Ben was taken aback by the remark, but there had been no malice in her voice, just the plain stating of fact. He decided to let it pass.

“Why wouldn’t she want me to know you were her sister?”

“Stepsister,” corrected Leda. “Guess.”

Ben looked at the young woman standing next to him in astonishment: what was she up to?

“Because you don't get along?”

“My opinion of your intelligence just dropped twenty points.”

Ben chuckled.

“It’s not exactly a fair question.”

“That’s because you haven’t been listening, Mr. Burton.”

Ben frowned, and quickly reviewed their conversation.

“Because she’s your stepsister?” he asked slowly.

Leda nodded.

“Do you like mysteries, Mr. Burton?”

“Depends what I get for solving them,” returned Ben lightly.

“In this case it will be what you don’t get,” Leda’s tone was repressive.

The slight pause between them was interrupted by a new voice.

“Leda, your presence is required elsewhere.” Astra’s words were flat but dismissal was obvious in the shift of her eyes.

“Busted!” remarked Leda with a smile. “It was nice talking to you Mr. Burton, should you tire of my sister’s company feel free to call me.” She held out a slim black stick. “This is a contact strip: Astra will tell you how to use it.”

“Leda it is highly inappropriate for you to give Mr. Burton your number.”

Astra made to retrieve it from Ben’s slack grasp but he jerked his hand back out of her way.

“I’ve never given a pretty woman her number back before and I don’t intend to start now.” he laughed.

“Such behaviour is inappropriate Mr. Burton, I must ask you to return the contact strip now.”

“I don’t think I will!”

For a moment he thought Astra was going to fight him for possession of the contact strip right here in the middle of the ball room with the elite of the Tula nation looking on but in the end she just turned to her sister.

“Go back to your father, Leda.”

Leda nodded.

“Call me, Mr. Burton.”

She placed her hand over her heart and inclined her head before withdrawing.

“She seems like quite a handful,” Ben remarked.

“She shares your delight in rousing the hornet’s nest.”

“Really?” Ben smiled, turning to watch Leda thread her way slowly through the crowd of people. “I wonder how she feels about skeletons...”

Astra gifted him with a frosty glare and suggested that they both return to their table. Ben acquiesced with a chuckle, reflecting that the day might not have gone as he had planned, but the developments had nevertheless been interesting.

Just interesting enough to make him want more.

Taunting Lips by Elena M Reyes

Title: Taunting Lips
Author: Elena M. Reyes
Series: Teasing Hands #.5
Release Date: December 10, 2014

Summary:
Her body was my greatest damnation.
I craved her and the way she came alive beneath my fingers. The way she’d let me force my will upon her tender flesh, so breakable and trusting—open to all I could teach her.
The moment I laid eyes on my defenseless gatita, everything within me shifted. Everything about her sang to my most basic of needs. She made me want things that never mattered before, that had no place within my solitary existence.
Amanda let me take. She let me gorge myself on all she had to give and never complained. I became addicted to her.
I was supposed to be the one in control. The master of our time together.
But this was never my game.
I was never in charge.
And now, I’m left dealing with the consequences of everything. My hunger, denial...the resentment.
“I hate that I love you.”

Rage was packed as I pulled up to the valet parking area. The lines were long, and the college crowd was out in full force. As my eyes traveled down the line, the hemlines of each tiny outfit receded, much to my enjoyment.
“Holy shit!” a soft feminine voice squeaked by the club’s entrance, and my body hummed at the sound. It sparked my curiosity, and I walked closer. There was a pull. An ache that began to take a hold of me the closer to her I got.
She was the closest to me out of her group, and it was something I was thankful for. No one between her and me to witness the effect she had on me.
A warm breeze passed through us, causing her scent to swirl around me. It was sweet and fresh. Nothing overpowering like the stuff most girls her age used. I took in a deep inhale and groaned out a low, “fuck.”
My pants grew tight, and my cock strained against the zipper. The pressure made me both excited and apprehensive. I’ve never reacted so strongly to a woman’s voice or smell. Women flocked to me, not the other way around.
Her back was turned to me as she walked through the club’s doors. What a spectacular fucking view. Ass high and round—tight, encased in distressed denim that molded around her curves.
There’s nothing sexier to me than when a woman is proud of her body. Tiny or plus sized. A woman, like the one a few feet away from me, was a sinful delight. You could tell by the way she walked—her sway—that she felt desirable.
I followed close behind, barely throwing a glance at the bouncer as I passed them by. They knew me well enough and gave me a quick head nod in greeting. Being a regular had its benefits.
The girls stopped once within the club’s main floor, right between the dance area and bar. She was facing away from me. My fingers twitched beside me. Something within me needed to touch her. See her face. Feel her skin.
“What’re you drinking?” the girl beside her yelled over the music. “I’m in a vodka kind of mood.”
“With OJ?” my girl added; her hips moved to the heavy Jamaican beat pulsing through the speakers. Her voice carried over to me, and I shivered. Its tone captivated me—caressed my cock with its husky timbre.
I wanted to hear her moan my name.
“Is there any other way?” the first girl answered, and then turned to listen to the other two standing beside her. They spoke, but I didn’t hear a word. Most men in my position would be enjoying the view of what stood before me, but I couldn’t tear my eyes away from her.
My body was in tune with hers. My cock throbbed for her pussy.
Standing off to the side, I watched while they made their way toward the VIP section of the club. Her hips swayed deliciously from side to side, the plumpness of her ass calling my name with each tiny step she took.  She sauntered toward the empty table with a reserved sign and sat down.
“Gatita,” I whispered low, and took a step closer.
“Who are you calling a little pussy cat?” Oliver stood beside me now with an amused expression on his face. When the fuck did he get here? “A few minutes ago.”
     Was I speaking aloud?
“No,” he answered, “the look on your face said it all.”
I ignored him and took a step closer, but his hand on my arm made me pause. “What?” My tone held annoyance; he was standing in the way of my latest craving. Turning back to look at him, I raised a brow and signaled toward his hand over my forearm.
Oliver released me and held his hands up. “Where are you going?”
Good question. What was I doing?
“No clue.” And it was the truth. There was a lure I felt—a fascination I needed to fuck out of my system, preferably with her.
It was as the last syllable passed through my lips that the unthinkable happened. She turned—my gatita faced me and smiled toward the bar. That innocent move fucked up every preconceived notion of what I thought my life should be.
Was it love? Fuck and no. I don’t believe in that at first sight crap. There was something there, though, lust being the predominant emotion. It enticed me into seeking her out.
A low growl escaped my lips as she pulled her face away and turned to listen to her friend. My eyes devoured every inch and curve it could, from the poutiness of her lips to the swell of her perfect breasts.
“Stop being a pussy and go talk to her,” Oliver deadpanned, and for a second, I snapped out of whatever trance she had me under. He looked beyond excited over whatever was happening to me. Fucker.
“I have no idea what you’re talking about.” Evasion was the key in this matter. He’d seen enough.
Oliver let out a deep belly laugh, loud enough to draw attention our way. “Bullshit.”
“Wait a minute,” my gatita hissed and slammed her hand on the tabletop. “Is that what…fuck! Did you see Hunter?”
Her angry voice pulled my attention her way once again. Who the fuck was Hunter? Why did she look so upset at the mere mention of his name?
     Why did I care?
The group spoke in heated whispers. They were trying to calm her down by the way they each smiled or patted her back. She didn’t care for any of it and stood up to leave. “You’re right. Fuck him. Hunter will not ruin my night.”
Her irate disposition only made her hotter in my eyes.
Angry sex was the best kind of sex.
They applauded, following behind her to the dance floor. Her body moved to the beat, a slow, sensual roll of her hips that caught the eyes of a few men. Irritation bloomed within me at the sight of so many lusting over what I’d claimed as mine.
Is that what I did? Fuck, yes. If anyone was leaving with that beauty tonight, it would be me.
Then I saw her sad face, and my plans changed.
I stood up, not caring one bit for what Oliver would witness. Something within me screamed to go to her. Make whatever he did a distant memory. My chair scraped against the club’s floor, and the people around us turned to look. Not one fuck was given over the spectacle I was creating.
She needed to be in my arms. I’d make everything better.
“One so beautiful should never wear such a sad expression.”
