Monday Morning's Menu: Tea or Consequences by KC Burn

Summary:
Riley Parker: temp, twink, geek… sleuth?

Maybe Riley isn’t living up to his full potential, but being a temp executive assistant suits him. He’s never bored at work, he’s got friends who let him geek out, and he’s got a carefully crafted twink exterior… which might be getting constrictive now that he’s on the other side of thirty. Life isn’t perfect, but it’s comfortable.

It all unravels when he takes a job working for a tea-obsessed cosmetics queen, the owner of Gautier Cosmetics. During the launch party for a new product, Riley finds his boss dead under suspicious circumstances, and the homicide detective is none other than Tadeo Martin, Riley’s high school obsession who never knew he was alive.

Tad drafts Riley to get the scoop on the inner workings of Gautier, and for Riley, it’s like a drug. His natural inquisitiveness is rewarded with more and more Tad. Unfortunately, his snooping puts him in the running for two other roles: suspect and victim. The killer doesn’t care which.

RILEY TOOK a deep breath and knocked gently before opening the door. A man sat at Sandra Cheng’s desk, dark head bent as he jotted in a notebook.

“Have a seat.”

That voice, like aged whiskey, flowed over him. It sounded vaguely familiar, but Riley didn’t know any cops, and despite the dark blue sports coat, there was no mistaking him for anything but police.

Riley sat and waited.

After several moments the cop lifted his head as he spoke. “I’m Detective Tad Martin. And you are?”

The room swam as Riley struggled to breathe. Or not throw up. This couldn’t be happening to him.

Tadeo Martin had been a fucking god in high school. Watching him on the lacrosse field had pretty much catapulted Riley into fierce, aching puberty. Two years ahead of Riley, he had no reason to know who Riley was. After all, the jocks had only mingled with the A/V and drama geeks that one year because the head cheerleader broke her leg and decided to star in the school play.

No need to humiliate himself by trying to get Tad to recall someone even Riley barely wanted to remember. It wasn’t like they’d been friends.

He stared at Tad, cataloging all the ways Tad’s face had changed and all the ways it hadn’t. His skin was still kissed with gold, as though the sun never quite stopped shining on his face, even in deepest winter. But there were fine lines at the corners of his eyes that probably crinkled when he laughed. A few silver threads sparkled in the smooth sheen of his dark hair. It was hard to tell, but Riley suspected they’d be about the same height, unless Tad had also experienced a late growth spurt after he’d left high school. Perhaps the absolute worst for Riley’s equilibrium, though, was the stubble. He didn’t know if it was a personal fashion choice or the result of overwork. Either way, Riley had spent so much time imagining Tad’s lips gliding along his jaw and down his neck. Now he could add the rasp of dark stubble marking his skin with beard burn to the sounds in his mind, and goose bumps rose along his collarbone.

Fucking hell. Why had the universe seen fit to drop this on him today? The only thing good about Tad sitting in front of him was that there was no way Tad would know who he was.

Tad’s jaw firmed and his nostrils flared ever so slightly. “Your name?” The words were almost glacial.

Riley made a sound that could generously be called a squeak as he sucked in a breath. He’d completely forgotten Tad had asked him a question.

“Riley Parker. Gabrielle’s temp admin assistant.” Heat flooded Riley’s face as his voice broke like he was back in high school, rather than a twink facing the wrong side of thirty.

Tad tilted his head to the side and narrowed his eyes. Riley didn’t quite like the speculation in his gaze and needed to divert it.

“T—” Riley swallowed the rest of Tad’s name and coughed. If he started calling Tad by his first name, he’d either piss him off or amp up the speculation. “Er… Detective Martin. Can you tell me what’s going on? Why have we been held all this time?”

Tad’s official mien dissolved into incredulity. “Didn’t my partner say anything?”

“Would that be the terrifying woman in the next office?”

A tiny laugh escaped from Tad, but he controlled his mirth too quickly for Riley to note if the corners of his eyes did indeed crinkle.

At least Riley wasn’t going to get in shit for his imprudent, thoughtless description.

“Sorry about that. She quit smoking a couple of weeks ago.”

Riley nodded because it did explain some things, but he didn’t imagine Tad’s partner exuded rainbows and buttercups even after smoking all the tobacco in the world.

Tad’s amusement quickly faded. “You’re the one who discovered Gabrielle Gautier?”

“Yes.”

Tad made a couple of quick notes. “At the moment, we’re treating her death as suspicious.”

Suspicious? Riley’s stomach flipped, and he got light-headed so fast he was insanely glad he was already sitting down. But he was truly afraid he might throw up, and he couldn’t do that in front of Tadeo Martin. His mortification would be infinite.

“Hey. Are you okay?”

Riley waved him off, afraid to open his mouth. He took a couple of deep breaths and his stomach settled a bit. “Sorry. Low blood sugar or something.”

“Are you diabetic?” Tad braced himself as though ready to launch out of his chair.

“No. Not that serious. I’ve only had half a glass of champagne since breakfast.” Because he’d intended to take Alisha somewhere with giant burgers after the party, before they met up with Shaun. When he finally got home, he’d have something to eat, but it would be more along the lines of crackers or rice.

Tad sat back down. “So you didn’t eat anything at the party?” This time the question had a hint of menace in it, unless Riley was imagining it.

“No. I was the liaison for the caterers. I was too busy making sure things went smoothly, and, well, there wasn’t time for lunch today. Gabrielle’s schedule was booked solid.”

“I’m going to need a copy of her calendar.”

“Just for today?”

“If you can get it for the last three months, that would be better.”

Riley paused for a few moments, because he suspected the rest of the Gautiers wouldn’t be happy with him handing over any information, but morally he was obliged to cooperate, wasn’t he? Legally, though, he was a bit murky. But there wasn’t anything confidential or proprietary in her calendar. Surely his nondisclosure agreement didn’t apply.

“If you’re worried about anything, like your job or other retaliation, I can promise you we’ll protect your identity. No one will know who provided this information. It’s simply more expedient to get it sooner rather than wait for a warrant.”

Riley wasn’t particularly worried about his job—if this one dried up, there’d be another around the corner—but retaliation? That seemed ridiculous—no one would do that. Ultimately, though, his loyalty was to his boss, however temporary the post had been, and that loyalty included making sure the police were able to figure out what happened to her.

“I can do that. Is that all you need from me?”

Tad’s dark eyebrows rose. “No. Not at all. You said you were the temp? How long have you been working here?”

“Nearly three weeks.”

“And were you aware of any allergies Mrs. Gautier had?”

“Madame.”

Tad narrowed his eyes. “What?”

Another tide of blood surged into Riley’s cheeks. “Sorry. She was French… Québécois. She was Madame Gautier, not Mrs.” If there was a French equivalent for Ms., Riley didn’t know it, and Gabrielle might have been too old-fashioned to use that term anyway.

“Right. Madame Gautier. Allergies?” Tad clearly thought Riley’s clarification a waste of time. He’d have to be careful not to provide irrelevant details.

“No. None that she mentioned to me.”

“Do you know of anyone who would want to harm her? Anyone who disliked her?”

“Enough to kill her? Not at all. At least, not that I’ve seen. But I’ve only been here a short time.”

“So everyone liked her?”

“Well, no. From what I saw, lots of business rivals found her ruthless. Many found her cold. She was a bit of a perfectionist. But… I can’t see anyone hurting her for that.”

Although after the fiasco in the conference room, if Floriana had her way, Cody wouldn’t be long for this world. Maybe the provocation didn’t have to be as great as Riley assumed.

“And what about you?”

“Me?” Riley squeaked again. He was going to have to do something about that. He cleared his throat. “Sorry. Tickle in my throat.”

Tad’s complete lack of expression said that maybe he didn’t believe Riley, but he wasn’t going to challenge him on it. “Did you like her?”

“Of course.” Did he reply too fast? Suspiciously fast? He rubbed sweaty, clammy palms on his no longer perfectly creased pants. “I mean, I admired her. She was refined, and she had this Old World glamor, but she still grabbed the cosmetics world by the throat and insisted on taking her piece of it.”

The only reply was more of Tad scratching a pen across paper. A few moments later, Tad lifted his head, and Riley was struck anew by his magnetism, all the more intense for Riley having been indoctrinated as a teenager.

“What about the party today? Would anyone gain anything if Madame Gautier were no longer in the picture?”

“Just call her Gabrielle. It’s faster.” Riley sucked in another breath and clamped his lips shut. Hadn’t he just promised himself he wasn’t going to offer up any more irrelevant information?

Tad somehow managed to nod in a patronizing manner. God, Riley had to remember that Tad wasn’t one of his buddies. He represented authority with a capital A, and he was investigating Gabrielle’s death as a possible murder. He might even consider Riley a suspect.

“Gabrielle, then. Is there a reason someone might have chosen to act now?”

Riley raked a hand through his hair and tucked it back in his lap before Tad noticed the tremors. Tad probably didn’t give a shit if Riley looked weak, but Riley would rather not add to his already bad impression.

Besides, he was having a hard time concentrating, and he didn’t think it was entirely due to Tad. He’d been holding off an incipient freak-out for a while, but it was coming, and it was coming soon. He desperately wanted to be at home when it happened.

“I don’t think so. The product launch for Invigorate, their new caffeine-infused skin-care line, is a done deal, as far as I know. The launch party for the public went ahead as scheduled—Floriana called from the conference room to let them know. There are probably reports and reviews online already.”

“Anything else? Business deals not related to caffeinated beauty products coming up?” Tad didn’t sound particularly impressed. “Mergers, buyouts?”

“I don’t believe so, but honestly, depending on what it was, there might be no reason for me to know. I am only a temporary employee.” He clamped down on the temptation to tell Tad that Gabrielle had asked him more than once to stay on permanently. More irrelevant information.

“Yes, you mentioned that. Tell me how that all came about.”

Shit. He really was under suspicion. “Gabrielle’s previous assistant, Aaron, had to go on long-term medical leave. She called my agency, and they sent me over.”

“Right. And her last name is?”

Riley waved a finger at Tad’s notes. “Aaron Brown, not Erin.”

He spelled it out, and Tad frowned at him. “Both male secretaries. Was that something Gabrielle insisted on?”

“We aren’t secretaries. We’re administrative assistants. And aren’t you a little too young to be that bound up in traditional gender roles?”

Tad blinked at him, and Riley thought he was trying not to laugh. Great. He’d sooooo been hoping to come off as laughable and pathetic. Tad, in one of the most alpha roles a man could have, also probably thought Riley was somehow less masculine.

“Sorry. Administrative assistants. But many jobs still tend to skew toward one gender, and I’d imagine that there are fewer men in your profession. Correct?”

Riley shrugged. “Yes, I suppose.” This was the first time he’d temped in replacement for a man, and most of the admin assistants in the other places he’d worked were women. Tad had a point, however distasteful.

“Then the fact that Gabrielle had two male assistants is something of an anomaly. Did she ever make any sort of overtures? Sexual advances?”

“What?” Riley rocked in his chair, wanting to stand up and pace but not wanting to antagonize the man with a gun. “What a terrible thing to suggest. I’m sure she didn’t request a man from my agency. I’m actually very good at my job, you know. I’m not just some eye candy for degenerate CEOs and company presidents.”

Tad held up his hands, palms out. “Calm down. I didn’t mean to suggest anything.”

Riley had to get the fuck out of here before he combusted. Or said something irretrievably stupid. “Are we almost done?”

Without answering his question, Tad asked another one. “Do you know why Aaron was out on medical leave?”

“No, of course not. Human Resources might know, but they certainly don’t share that information.” He knew it wasn’t parental leave, but that was about it. He’d heard a number of theories, though, and he’d gotten the impression that people weren’t terribly fond of Aaron Brown, which might explain Gabrielle’s repeated job offers. It could have had nothing to do with Aaron’s performance and everything to do with his personality.

Tad shrugged. “You might have heard something. He might have friends around the office who know.”

“If anyone knows for sure, they haven’t told me.”

“Do you have a list of everyone who was at the party?”

The odd jump in topic jarred Riley’s brain. It was difficult to prepare answers when he didn’t know where Tad was heading. “Maybe? It wasn’t exactly mandatory, but it would have been frowned upon if any of the employees didn’t attend. Most of them wanted to, simply for the free food and drinks. Everyone was allowed to bring a date if they wanted, but there was no list for plus ones. There were caterers. I think someone already went to talk to them before they left.”

Tad didn’t appear too happy with Riley’s answer, but it wasn’t like Riley had been tasked with taking attendance. “Who was your date?”

Be nice if Tad was asking for personal reasons. Riley grimaced. What was he thinking? He didn’t really want to get picked up while answering police questions about discovering the dead body of his employer. No, no, and no. Definitely not a story to tell the grandkids. And he shouldn’t have to keep reminding himself of this, but Tad wasn’t gay, no matter how delightfully filthy and naughty he’d been in Riley’s wet dreams.

“I didn’t bring a date.” Again, he was tempted to explain that both he and Alisha were between relationships and had decided to be each other’s date, but that was probably more frivolous information Tad didn’t have the time or patience for. Alisha wasn’t a stranger who’d need to be tracked down.

“Okay, then. Can you get me a list of employees?”

“Yes.” Again, not private information. Floriana and François wouldn’t be pleased, but Tad’s requests didn’t seem unreasonable.

Tad asked for his contact information and made note of it, then stood. “Where’s your desk?”

“Uh, you want me to print stuff out now?”

“Might as well, since you’re here.”

Riley didn’t want to read the subtext, which was basically that he might not have access by Monday morning, although he agreed. Tad had undoubtedly pegged him as the one most likely to cooperate.

“Then can I leave?”

“Yes.”

Riley stood and faced Tad, perhaps a bit longer than necessary. After all was said and done, Riley had ended up a couple of inches taller than Tad, rather than the half a foot or so shorter he’d been the last time he’d laid eyes on Tadeo Martin.

Tad stared up at him, expression morphing from politely expectant to quizzical, especially as he inspected Riley’s hair. This time Riley could definitely put a label on Tad’s expression: This guy seems familiar—have I met him before?

Last thing he needed was Tad figuring out just where they knew each other from.

“My desk is right outside Gabrielle’s office.” He could hold it together long enough to get Tad the required printouts. There simply wasn’t any other option.

Review Tour: River Home by Elle Keaton

Title: River Home
Author: Elle Keaton
Series: Accidental Roots #5
Genre: M/M Romance
Release Date: February 16, 2018
Cover Design: Cate Ashwood
Summary:
If you don’t know what you want, would you recognize it if you found it?

Miguel Ramirez is the definition of pochos; a half-breed-white-washed Mexican–American who doesn’t speak Spanish (also unapologetically bisexual). Three years ago he arrived in Skagit a broken man having barely managed to escape an abusive relationship. Slowly, he’s rebuilt his life. He’s tried hard to discard his deepest desires and be happy with what life has doled out. Family feels out of his grasp, no one really wants to keep a stray after all. Except, maybe, a red-haired stranger with a galaxy of freckles covering his face who seems to encompass everything Miguel’s learned to avoid.

Nate Richardson; focused, solid, reliable, career-minded, Federal Agent. No time for relationships outside of work. Then he runs into Miguel with his crazy green eyes, rakish smile and outrageous sense of humor. Nate starts thinking about Miguel as more than just another guy. Nate was sure he didn’t care about sex and didn’t believe in love…he’d never met Miguel Ramirez before.

Things quickly heat up between Nate and Miguel. Crime is heating up in Skagit as well. Nate is sidelined when the case he is working on reaches a frustrating standstill. In the meantime, unnerving incidents transpire, some literally on Nate’s doorstep. Will outside forces—or their own baggage—keep Miguel and Nate apart? What exactly is family, and can Miguel and Nate make one of their own?

When Miguel Ramirez found himself in Skagit, WA he also found himself a job and friends but he wasn't able to let go of his past and the trust issues that came from it but he's getting closer every day.  Nate Richardson is part of Adam Klay's FBI team still trying to get a hold on the human trafficking case.  When these two meet, the passionate attraction is obvious but will they be able to find happiness amongst trust and crime?

I love this series by Elle Keaton, in fact it was one of my Best Reads of 2017 so when the opportunity to read the newest installment crossed my desk, how could I not jump at the chance?  River Home is a perfect fit for the Skagit universe, not only do we get to know Miguel from Buck Swanfeldt’s Garage but we also get to meet Agent Nate Richardson working the case with Adam Klay.  The characters are as appealing and engaging as ever, definitely fictional but with just the right amount of what I like to call "next door neighbor factor".  I just wanted to wrap Miguel in one never-ending bear hug to keep him safe and loved but I also knew he had the strength to say "Bring it on!".  As for Nate, well he screamed the classic case of needing to risk something before discovering how important it or they are to him.

As for the mystery aspect, Elle Keaton blends the case perfectly with the characters and romance between them.  We get to see some of our favorites from previous entries that helped fill in their own lives as well as make Miguel and Nate's more rounded.  Speaking of secondary characters who were main in the other installments, if asked whether River Home is a standalone I would say, yes technically.  However, I am glad I have read them in order I just find the connections between friends to flow better which in turn just adds to the warmth and heart of the story but the case too just meshed better in my head.  But, yes it could be read without having read the previous entries I just don't think I would recommend doing so.

River Home(the whole Accidental Roots series really) at its core is about friendships and love and reminding us that family does not have to be blood alone, or at all, its about heart and those who are there beside you that makes a family.  Elle Keaton's Accidental Roots series is not only  entertaining but it also reminds us what is really important in life and when you can blend those two factors together, you know you are reading something special.

RATING:

Author Bio:
Author, photographer, rare Pacific Northwest Native, Elle grew up in Seattle, WA., with the Cascade Mountain range to the east and Olympics to the west. Less than two hours northwest lie the majestic San Juan Islands. To the northeast is the Methow Valley and the scrub deserts of Eastern Washington. Geography ripe with material.

A graduate of Western Washington University, Elle has a BS in biology which taught her to be tenacious. The closest she has come to biology since then is having two kids. Like an experiment or something. She’s lived in four states (none of which were gaseous), London England, and Hong Kong; always knows what time it is, and has no problem finding parking even in the most difficult places. Cannot balance a checking account.

Elle's series Accidental Roots, mostly set in the Skagit Valley of Western Washington, will make its debut spring of 2017. Storm Season is tender, sometimes irreverent, full of nosy neighbors and help when the hero didn’t think he needed it. Writing has always been a passion but not something she was able to take seriously until recently. Now her head is full of ideas and not enough time in each day.

PROLOGUE
The Dragon Kingdom of Nebty

Forests burned, dragons roared, and wings flapped in a deadly cacophony of violence and war.

Dragons of all sizes and colors were in the air and on the ground, battling to the death over who would control the twin deity scepters of Wadget and Nekhbet.

Nut, a blue-and-white sky dragon with a long snout, curled tail, and two horns on her head that curved back at the tip, stared up at her mate with frosty eyes of rebuttal.

Geb, a powerful green-and brown two-headed earth dragon with red eyes, spikey armored scales, and a whipping tail that ended with a flat arrowhead perfect for cutting and impaling, glared down at her. At the height of one hundred twenty-eight feet, Nut, half her mate’s size, growled at him when he used his massive head to shove her to the mouth of the Cave of Dep.

“You stay here and protect the hatchlings,” he ordered, as if the twin goddesses had left the earth dragon as the sole ruler of Nebty and guardian of the Gateway of the Two Ladies. They hadn’t. Nut and Geb ruled together. Some days, like today, when the inevitable war for power and dominance erupted, Geb’s protective nature made him high-handed and unyielding.

Glancing behind her at the cracked white shell and to the baby dragons huddled behind the fragments, Nut understood Geb’s position, although the thought of leaving her mate set the fire in her belly to boiling.

“If I fall in battle, your sky magic and ferocity will be all that stands between the foolish among us from getting their claws on the scepters.”

“I know.” Nut stepped closer to her mate, her snout going to one of his thick necks and rubbing. “It’s not just our dragon betrayers who want the power of the scepters that you must defeat, but the Demon Kingdom who seeks unfettered access to the human realm.”

That was as close as Nut would get to acknowledging the very real possibility that her mate may not survive this dark and dangerous night. For years, the Demon Kingdom, led by King Sansabonsom, had sought to undermine the rules set forth by the goddesses after they’d sought eternal rest within the scepters, leaving Nut and Geb as the gatekeepers between the preternatural and human realms.

Even as they spoke of Nut fleeing with their daughters and Geb remaining behind, sounds of warfare permeated the cold winter air, echoed by bodies crashing from the sky in flaming scales of defeat.

“Not all want the scepters. The strongest of our allies will stay and fight.” Geb lowered his heads and licked Nut’s face, an affectionate gesture she feared would be their last. “I need you to lead the others to safety, especially the young ones. If they stay, I can’t guarantee their safety.”

A stream of fire emerged from the darkness and behind Geb. The spray of molten heat slammed into the earth dragon. His wings, instinctively, snapped out and up to shield Nut and their hatchlings. With a bellow of fury, Geb leaped into the air, his wings taking him on a collision course with a lava dragon who possessed none of the earth dragon’s size or might.

In a matter of seconds, Geb had one of his mouths locked around the dragon’s reddish-black neck, and the other jaw clamped onto a black wing. With a hard tug, the wing and head disconnected from the dragon’s body. Magma spurted and oozed. The dead lava dragon smashed to the charred ground with a resounding thud.

Spitting out the wing and head, Geb turned to Nut, who still stood at the mouth of the cave. As they stared at each other, dragons not involved in the war began to move toward her. Most of them were dragon mothers with their hatchlings or dragons too young, old, or small to fight on either side but old enough to help tend to the youngest in their party.

“Take care of them, Nut. Fighting is easy, living and building from the ash of ruin are hard. Be well, my queen. And be safe. Tell my daughters I love the—”

Six dragons attacked Geb. Claws, tails, and fire sent him flying backward but not down and definitely not out of the battle. With an ear-piercing roar of rage, the two-headed earth dragon counterattacked. Fire, wings, and scales collided in the morbid, dark sky, the dragon battle epic in its savagery and sacrilege.

Dragons weren’t created to fight each other or intended to use the goddesses’ magic for personal gain and short-sighted goals of power and privilege. Yet, anarchy reigned. Her beloved Geb would fight the dragon traitors who would steal the scepters, rule the preternatural realm, and turn a blind eye while the Demon Kingdom invaded the human realm and feasted on the flesh of children.

With a heavy heart, Nut looked away from her heroic mate and to the dragons awaiting her directive. She would lead them to safety, as Geb had ordered. He and his most trusted allies were fighting to give Nut time to get as many dragons through the gateway and into the realm of humans.

With a low rumble, she called her daughters to her. On young, unsteady legs, they came, and she used her tail to lift them onto her back. She took to the sky, leading a caravan of dragons away from the only home they’ve known and toward the Gateway of the Two Ladies.
