Blog Tour: Chosen by RS Broadhead

Title: Chosen
Author: RS Broadhead
Series: Urban Legends #1
Genre: New Adult, Supernatural, Thriller
Release Date: October 24, 2017

Summary:
Black eyes. No emotion. No sympathy. Only emptiness.

Piper McAdams’s life was normal. Career? Check. Boyfriend? Check. Friends? Check. One unsettling run in with a homeless man turns everything from normal to terrifying. She begins seeing…things.

Things she can’t seem to explain or make any sense.

As if things aren’t already getting out of hand, Piper receives news that the only family member she has is dead. She thinks maybe a trip across the country to her hometown will get her away from all the strange events happening.

After a late night accident, Piper isn’t in her hometown burying her loved one. She’s in a town called Hell. All she wants to do is leave, but the people seem to be holding her there for some reason.

A reason she feels threatens her life. Around every corner things become darker and scarier.

Can she escape what is coming for her?

What is the biggest influence/interest that brought you to this genre?
I love stuff that scares me without all the gore. Just creepy stuff. The thing that scares me the most is freaky kids, so when I read about the black-eyed children, I thought, this is perfect. It was hard staying away from romance. There is a very small amount in this book. Like two chapters. Mainly, I wanted to focus on putting the main character in the scariest situation I could think of.

When writing a book, what is your favorite part of the creative process(outline, plot, character names, editing, etc)?
The editing! Sounds crazy right? But I love getting to read over the finished project with all the help from my editors. That makes the writing so much stronger. And come on, the editing is the last step. That’s an amazing feeling!

When reading a book, what genre do you find most interesting/intriguing?
Paranormal of any kind for sure. Writers can literally do anything with it. That genre is always my go to when I need a read.

If you could co-author with any author, past or present, who would you choose?
Hmmm … This one is really tough. I guess it would depend on the genre. If it were a romance I would go with Rachel Van Dyken. Her books always crack me up, and she has the awesome ability to make just a kiss scene sound freaking HOT! If it was a horror/thriller Joe Hart. His books put you in the middle of the scare and make the hairs on your neck stand! Fantasy/Paranormal I would go with Amy Bartol. The way she puts words together, just beautiful!

Have you always wanted to write or did it come to you "later in life"?
Kind of happened both ways. I started out in school writing poetry, those “in ten years” things for my classmates (You know like John Brown will be slapping burgers together at McDonald’s in ten years with an ex wife and twenty kids from all his side chicks), and quizzes that used to be really popular in magazines. Once I got out of school writing didn’t really make another appearances until about ten years later. I got a job at an accounting firm that was over an hour drive from my house. Lunch hours were really boring, so I had to find something to occupy my time. Unveiled started out super choppy based off a scrap book I had with stories in it about me and my friends. It was never meant to see the light of day. Haha! After many, many edits it was actually good enough to put out. And boom! Here I am now.

Author Bio:
R. S. Broadhead lives in Jackson, Alabama with her husband of ten years, their two little girls, and a pug named Wednesday Love the Duchess, or Winnie for short. She has a bachelor’s in psychology and a master’s in business administration. She loves to snowboard, travel (Australia is her favorite place so far), and dance (not professionally, just whenever she feels like it). When she was sixteen-years-old, her and her friends would take pictures and make up funny stories about them. Fourteen years later, UNVEILED was born. UNVEILED, her first novel, is the first book in a four book series.

Author Bio:
Anna Martin is from a picturesque seaside village in the south west of England. After spending most of her childhood making up stories, she studied English Literature at university before attempting to turn her hand as a professional writer.

Apart from being physically dependent on her laptop, she is enthusiastic about writing and producing local grassroots theatre (especially at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival, where she can be found every summer), travelling, learning to play the ukulele, and Ben & Jerry’s New York Super Fudge Chunk.

Although her most recent work is in the LGBT romance genre, in the past Anna has worked on a variety of different projects including short stories, drabbles, flash fiction, fan fiction, plays for both children and adults, and poetry. She has written novels in the Teen or Young Adult genre, Romance and Fantasy novels.

Anna is, by her own admission, almost unhealthily obsessed with books. The library she has amassed is both large and diverse; "My favourite books," she says, "are 'The Moonstone' by Wilkie Collins, 'To Kill a Mockingbird' by Harper Lee and 'Oryx and Crake' by Margaret Atwood." She also owns multiple copies of Michael Crichton's Jurassic Park books and re-reads the Harry Potter novels with almost startling regularity.

Anna claims her entire career is due to the love, support, pre-reading and creative ass-kicking provided by her closest friend Jennifer. Jennifer refuses to accept any responsibility for anything Anna has written.

Promo Tour: Halloween is Murder by Carolyn Arnold

Title: Halloween is Murder
Author: Carolyn Arnold
Series: McKinley Mysteries #11
Genre: Romantic Comedy, Mystery
Release Date: October 3, 2017
Summary:
Beware of all that goes bump in the night…

Sean and Sara McKinley are excited about the haunted house they’ve set up as a Halloween charity fund-raiser, but things take a ghoulish turn when the reporter covering their story is found dead. With the media keeping mum about how she died, Sara’s curiosity is piqued, and she convinces Sean to take on the investigation through their PI firm.

But this case is not without its challenges. The police are actively investigating it, as well, and it’s not even clear that the woman was murdered. It will take a little cloak-and-dagger, dress-up, and finesse for the McKinleys to get to the bottom of it, but they aren’t the kind to give up.

As they troll for leads and work through the skeletons in the reporter’s closet, they unearth a few suspects, but they’ll need to carve out the whole truth if they’re going to find her killer. If they do so fast enough, there might even be time for a little trick-or-treating.

Chapter 3
SHADOWS OF NIGHT
SARA WAS CALLING YOUR SOURCE from her home office one last time. That’s what she told herself anyhow. She’d lost count of how many times she’d called them, but she had always met with a busy signal. And there it was again…

She lowered the receiver to its cradle. One could be certain that the station had plenty of rollover lines, so it had to be other people calling in about Chloe’s death, too. Other crazy people like her wanting answers. At least, she was sure that Sean thought she was crazy, but she had a niggling sensation in her gut that they needed to look into Chloe’s death.

Maybe it was because she and Sean were surrounded by murder wherever they looked and wherever they went. Even when they were supposed to be relaxing on their honeymoon, a case had found them. And the inclination to view any death as suspicious was embedded in her psyche from years working as a homicide detective with the Albany PD. Sure, Chloe could have died from natural causes, an accident, or even suicide, but it was also just as likely that someone had caused her death intentionally. To quiet her mind, Sara had to find out which scenario applied to Chloe. And if her calls weren’t making it through, there was another route she could take.

She flicked on the monitor, pleased that she had the habit of leaving her computer on most of the time. She brought up an Internet search engine and typed in Chloe’s full name and Your Source. This brought up pages of results. The first entry was a post from the television station entitled, DEATH OF LOCAL REPORTER CASTS DARK CLOUD OVER ALBANY. Sara clicked to open the link.

Scanning down the page, she found she was no closer to knowing what had happened to Chloe. There was no cause of death listed, but rather, the piece read like an obituary with a recap of Chloe’s career accomplishments and brief mentions of her personal life—she had a sister and had died single. That was it. Somehow it seemed like a sad summation of a twenty-five-year-old woman’s life that had been cut so short. There was so much that Chloe had yet to experience, and Sara hoped that Chloe had at least known romantic love at some point in her life.

Sara returned to her search results and clicked on many of the other links, but they were more or less copycats of the statement Your Source had published.

Every Day Is Halloween
“A nice and fun, old-fashioned mystery. Halloween is Murder was a very well-written and fast read with great characters and a fun mystery with a resolution that I did not see coming.” –The Reading Café

Ask anyone who loves Halloween and they’ll probably tell you their favorite part about it is dressing up. When you put on a costume, you can be whomever—or whatever—you want. It’s liberating! On top of that, it’s likely that there are all kinds of goodies lying around the house.

When I was a girl, I loved playing Barbie. I loved dressing her up and assigning her whatever life story I wanted. And, man, did I enjoy it! Maybe for a little too long, in fact. I kept playing into my early teens! At the time, I felt like some sort of freak. I certainly wouldn’t have wanted this news to get out to the kids at school. They probably would have called me a baby or something like that. So I kept this part of my life a secret, and I justified my addiction by pinning the blame on my sister, who is six years younger than me—she needed someone to play with!

Now that I’m older—much, much older—I look back and find this aspect of my past amusing. I realize that it’s absolutely nothing to be embarrassed about, but it shows me that I’ve always loved telling stories and acting them out. No wonder I became an author!

In the grand scheme of things, Halloween is very similar. The holiday allows people of all ages to participate in this fantasy, if only for one night. But as an author, I get to experience Halloween every day of the year. I become someone else every time I sit at my desk and immerse myself into the worlds of my characters. I get to delve into their minds, to know their thoughts, their feelings, their personalities, their lives. And I get to share my imagination with my readers. Now that’s a real treat!

Speaking of, I’m going to grab a small bowl of candy corn and gummy peaches and get to writing. Happy Halloween!

--Carolyn Arnold

✯✯✯✯ A Halloween Mystery by Rebecca A on October 5, 2017 via Amazon
Private Investigators Sean and Sara McKinley have rented a house to host a Haunted House for Halloween and have Chloe Parsons, a reporter with Your Source News out to do a feature on it.

But when Chloe winds up dead later that day there are questions about how she died. Chloe's sister, Marie believes that Chloe has been murdered and asks Sean and Sara to take on her case.

Will Sara and Sean and their investigators get to the bottom of it and find out what happened to Chloe?

This was an interesting story that had you wondering who had it out for Chloe when there seemed to be quite the list of suspects.

We don't get much of Chloe first hand but it appeared that she had her mind set on getting where she wanted to go and wanted things her way. I could definitely understand if she made a couple of enemies from time to time.
I think what I found interesting was that Sean, Sara and Jimmy Voight (an investigator with them) seemed to have some resistance by the police so I am not sure what occurred in the past as this was the first book I have read by this author.

The ending did surprise me and I liked that.

What to expect from the McKinley Mysteries:
Romance. Humor. Murder. Are you looking for a murder mystery without all the graphic violence and foul language? Something that you can enjoy in an afternoon and walk away feeling good about afterward? How about a dash of humor and romance? If so, meet former detectives Sean and Sara McKinley. When a billionaire leaves them all his money, they no longer have to work, but they find themselves sticking to what they’re good at—solving murders. Undercover, off the books, and around the world, they’ll get to the bottom of things…and romance it up along the way.

Book Blitz: The Night Realm by Annette Marie

Title: The Night Realm
Author: Annette Marie
Series: Spell Weaver #1
Genre: Adult, Urban Fantasy
Release Date: October 20, 2017
Publisher: Dark Owl Fantasy Inc.
Summary:
Clio would love nothing more than to go home. But as the illegitimate daughter of the nymph king, she’s stuck in the human world, exiled until she can earn a place in the royal family. Then her half-bother offers her a chance to prove herself. All she has to do is acquire some magic … by stealing it from the most dangerous spell weavers in the Underworld.

Lyre prefers to go unnoticed, which is a tricky objective for an incubus. He can’t hide his looks or his coveted spell weaving skills, but he’s learned to mask his true intentions. As an unwilling pawn of the tyrannical Hades family, he stays alive by keeping one step ahead of his masters.

Now he’s been assigned to watch over a visitor from the Overworld—one who’s definitely hiding something. And with her unholy talent for triggering chaos and catastrophe, his job just keeps getting more perilous. Clearly, she’ll never survive this world.

The thing is, he’s no longer sure he can survive it either.

Doors lined the dim, dank hall, locked with simple wards she could easily undo. In the first room she found a bunch of tools—surgical knives, spellcrafting paraphernalia, gadgets she had no name for—all stacked haphazardly on shelves. No magic at all.

She slipped out and checked the next three rooms with similar results—nothing useful. Then she opened the fourth door.

Shelves of steel disks, metal spheres, collars, wristbands, handcuffs, belts, chains—all spelled. The sheer volume of magic overwhelmed her sight and she had to close her eyes.

Opening them again, she crouched beside a square basket half full with metal collars. Rejects, she realized. All the weavings were faulty or broken. She cautiously lifted the top collar off the pile for a closer look. This weaving … it was designed to—to inflict pain? A collar that would torture its wearer?

“I’m still working on that design.”

The collar fell from her hands and landed on the pile with a clatter. She shot to her feet and whirled around.

A daemon leaned in the open doorway, one shoulder braced against the frame. Pale hair, the face of a god, brilliant amber eyes. Another incubus.

This one resembled Lyre the least. His hair was lighter, almost white, and his cheekbones were sharper. Or perhaps it was the sickly hollowness of his cheeks that gave his features that extra sharpness. His shoulders were narrow, with the thin limbs of someone who had shunned physical activity.

“It’s a beautiful weave though, don’t you think?” he continued, his voice high-pitched compared to the other incubi. “I’ll get it to work sooner or later.”

Her blood roared in her ears like a thundering surf and she fought to stay calm. He was talking to her like she was a weaver. Maybe he didn’t realize she had snuck in. Maybe he thought she was supposed to be down here.

“It’s … lovely,” she choked out.

“I’ve been trying to perfect it for a couple seasons now,” he went on, his eyes gleaming strangely. “Finding the right melody has proven a challenge.”

“M-melody?” Her gaze darted to the hall behind him. He was blocking her only escape.

He smiled. “The melody of pain. Suffering is its own kind of music—a song that rises and falls, increases in pitch and tempo … and builds into an exquisite crescendo.”

She shuddered.

He stepped into the room, moving closer to her. “Finding the right melody for the weave …” He hummed a few eerie notes. “Finding the right volume, the right tempo, that’s what I haven’t mastered yet. Get it wrong and the subject won’t sing. Or they die too quickly, and that’s no fun at all.”

“That sounds … very challenging,” she whispered.

“Oh, it is. I never have enough subjects.” The disconcerting gleam in his eyes brightened as his smile widened to show his teeth. “Can you sing, pretty one?”

Panic flared. “Pardon?”

In a flash of movement, his hand was around her throat. He slammed her back into the shelves in a crash of metal hitting concrete. She choked, clutching his wrist.

He leaned in until his nose touched her cheek and inhaled deeply. “Mmm. Lovely. How delightful that you’ve volunteered yourself as my next subject. I’m looking forward to hearing you sing.”

“I …” she gasped, prying at his fingers. “I don’t sing.”

“Oh, I’m sure I can find the right melody for you.” He slid his nose across her cheek to her ear. “I know how to make you scream for me all night long.”
