Monday's Montage Mantlepiece: Claw

Summary:
Beasts lurk in the shadows of wild and forgotten places and in the hearts and souls of men. They are the stuff of dreams and nightmares, but are they feral and savage, or just misunderstood? Creatures of myth and legend stalk these tales of dark desire and animal passions. Three men come face-to-face with such creatures and find they are much more than they seem. While there is danger, there might be unexpected benefits as well, if they can accept the impossible and dare to venture into the primordial regions where nature and the beasts still reign. Three acclaimed authors of gay romance explore the boundaries between man and beast and the place where their worlds overlap.

Stories Included:
Isolation by Jamie Fessenden
When Sean’s marriage breaks up, he returns to his hometown, hoping to find the childhood friend who meant everything to him in his teens. He finds Jack living in a cabin, surrounded by the forest he always loved, and the two begin to tentatively repair their damaged relationship. But a large animal has been seen prowling around the edge of town, and soon Sean comes face-to-face with the beast. Jack insists the creature isn't dangerous—it's been coming around the cabin for years. It isn't long, however, before Sean discovers a far more disturbing connection between his friend and the beast.

Transformation by Kim Fielding
After being caught in bed with another male student in 1886, Orris Spencer is declared an abomination by his wealthy father. Orris is promptly banished from their Fifth Avenue mansion and sent across the continent to Oregon. Now Orris must try to find a place for himself on his brother’s farm and figure out how to deal with life as a pioneer. When he’s called on to help protect the livestock from a predator, he’s not at all certain he’s up to the task. Then he meets Henry Bonn, a strange and intriguing man who lives in a cabin in the hills. Orris’s attraction to Henry may not be an abomination—but it may prove a greater danger than banishment.

The Black Dog by Eli Easton
Constable Hayden MacLairty is used to life being dull around the tiny hamlet of Laide on the north Scottish coast. They get occasional tourists, “monster hunters” interested in the local legend of the Black Dog, but Hayden thinks that’s only a myth. A rash of sheep killings, a murdered hiker, huge footprints, and sightings of the Black Dog force Hayden to rethink the matter. With the help of Simon Corto, a writer from New York doing research for a book about the Black Dog, Hayden tries to figure out why the enormous hound is reappearing. Hayden finds himself strongly attracted to another person for the first time in his life. But between the danger stalking the hills, Simon’s inevitable return to New York, and Hayden’s mother’s illness, true love may be more of a phantom than the Black Dog.

Author Bios:
Eli Easton
Having been, at various times and under different names, a minister’s daughter, a computer programmer, the author of paranormal mysteries, a game designer, an organic farmer, an avid hiker, and a profound sleeper, Eli is happily embarking on yet another incarnation as a m/m romance author.

As an addicted reader of such, she is tinkled pink when an author manages to combine literary merit, vast stores of humor, melting hotness and eye-dabbing sweetness into one story. She promises to strive to achieve most of that most of the time. She currently lives on a farm in Pennsylvania with her husband, three bulldogs, three cows and six chickens. All of them (except for the husband) are female, hence explaining the naked men that have taken up residence in her latest fiction writing.

Jamie Fessenden
Jamie Fessenden set out to be a writer in junior high school. He published a couple short pieces in his high school's literary magazine and had another story place in the top 100 in a national contest, but it wasn't until he met his partner, Erich, almost twenty years later, that he began writing again in earnest. With Erich alternately inspiring and goading him, Jamie wrote several screenplays and directed a few of them as micro-budget independent films. He then began writing novels and published his first novella in 2010.

After nine years together, Jamie and Erich have married and purchased a house together in the wilds of Raymond, New Hampshire, where there are no street lights, turkeys and deer wander through their yard, and coyotes serenade them on a nightly basis. Jamie recently left his "day job" as a tech support analyst to be a full-time writer.

Kim Fielding
Kim Fielding lives in California and travels as often as she can manage. A professor by day, at night she rushes into a phonebooth to change into her author costume (which involves comfy clothes instead of Spandex and is, sadly, lacking a cape). Her superpowers include the ability to write nearly anywhere, often while simultaneously doling out homework assistance to her children. Her favorite word to describe herself is "eclectic" and she finally got that third tattoo.

All royalties from her novels Stasis, Flux and Equipoise are donated to Doctors Without Borders.

Into the Crossfire by Cindy McDonald

Title: Into the Crossfire
Author: Cindy McDonald
Series: First Force #1
Genre: Romantic Suspense, Military Romance, Black Ops
Release Date: August 4, 2015
Cover Design: Dawne Dominique
Summary:
It had been four years since ex-Navy SEAL, Jack Haliday, had an explosive run-in with a biker gang wounding their leader, Gunner. During those years Jack had acquired everything he ever wanted: a beautiful wife, an adorable daughter, and a lovely home in the suburbs—everything was as perfect as it could get, until Gunner returned to twist Jack’s world inside-out with a vengeance that he could never have prepared for. Critically injured, he found himself surrounded in the security of First Force International and in the care of their head medic, Dr. Rayne Lee, a beautiful and compassionate woman who knows firsthand the sharp slice of loss and grief.

Now Jack has a score to settle and he’s got some new friends to help him, but in the end, can Rayne help to ease his grief and encourage him to start a new life with team First Force?

Closing her eyes, Rayne took in a braced breath. “My name is Rayne. And I know all about the nightmares where the ones that you love are murdered in front of your eyes and you are powerless to stop it.” Her voice fell away.

Jack’s head snapped toward her.

She busied herself cleaning up the implements that she had used to suture him while she spoke. “My husband and I were on a medical mission in Peru three years ago. The Peruvian government had taken down a guerrilla group known as the Glory Road near the Amazonian Valley. They had killed or arrested approximately one-hundred members of the group. Matt and I were part of a small medical unit that went in to care for the women that had been held as sex slaves. They were in terrible condition, dehydrated, starved, and beaten. Anyway, Matt, me, and my four-year-old daughter, Sierra, were housed in one of the tiny shacks in a camp. One night, the camp was attacked by the guerrillas they hadn’t captured. It was a slaughter.” Rayne’s voice hiccupped. She needed to catch her breath. She sank onto the edge of the bed.

Jack watched her intently while she fought to muster composure.

Finally, she continued, “They killed my husband and my daughter, but for some reason they spared me and several of the women who had been rescued. I wished that they hadn’t. I was their prisoner for seven horrible months. I prayed for death every night. Uncle Walt and his team rescued me. It’s been a long road back to becoming a functioning human being.” Hesitating, she wrung her hands together. She found the courage to look him in the eye. “So you see, Jack, I have a complete understanding of what you’re going through.”

Jack Haliday:  Jack is one hot ex-Navy SEAL. He is represented one the cover of the book by one very hot British rugby player and model, Stuart Reardon. Tall, muscle bound with a thick nest of dark wavy hair and a one-thousand megawatt smile that brings women to their knees. Does Jack know that he’s gorgeous? Sure, but he doesn’t let it get in the way of helping people in trouble and comforting those who need it most. Jack loves his family. He is madly in love with his wife, Laura, and that little daughter of his, Lil, is the apple of his eye. This man had it all. He was in love with his life, and when it is suddenly ripped out from underneath him, his life becomes one objective: revenge!

Dr. Rayne Lee: Four years ago, Dr. Rayne Lee lost her husband and daughter, Sierra, to a group of hostile guerrillas in Peru. It has taken great constitution to rebuild her life and to join her uncle’s international security firm, First Force, as the head medic. Now, just as she thought that her life was getting back to some semblance of “normal” a handsome man and his adorable daughter are brought into her care. Her motherly instincts kick in immediately as she take little Lil Haliday under her caring wing, but what is it about Jack Haliday that’s getting under her skin, and can she help him to get passed the grief and start a new life with First Force?

Lil Haliday: Lil is a curly-top cutie with a personality that draws everyone to love her instantly. Just a little tyke and at the age of four, her bravery in the face of a horrible tragedy is an inspiration to the men who make up the covert team of First Force. Like her father, Jack, and Dr. Rayne Lee, Lil is a regular character in the First Force Series—she’ll be there to entertain you and the other characters throughout the series.

REACHING FOR THE STARS
When you were growing up did you have parents that encouraged you to “reach for the stars?”  Perhaps your mom told you: “You can be anything that you want to be.” This was not necessarily the case for me. Oh, don’t get me wrong I had great parents—they were just extremely realistic. Their advice consisted of: “Do well in school, get a job, get married, have children, and the rest will work itself out.” And if you break-down that advice, it was really quite solid—except it was never enough for yours truly.

When I was a young girl, I dreamed of becoming a famous movie star. Okay, now there’s a dream that definitely falls in the unrealistic category, but a girl can dream, right?  I am a firm believer that the Lord provides us exactly what we need. The good Lord provided me with a generous portion of talent in dance and I studied hard at many schools including, The Pittsburgh Ballet Theatre School, and with The Pittsburgh Dance Alloy at Carnegie Mellon to name a few. I wasn’t able to go to New York or Hollywood to chase my dreams—my parents wouldn’t hear of it, so I got a job and got married. I also kept dancing, and in 1985 my husband encouraged me to open a dance school. Well it wasn’t the original dream, but hey as I said the good Lord gives us what we need and here was an opportunity to have a career in dance, hopefully a successful career.

My dance school was most successful. I began choreographing musicals on a local level and I choreographed an opera for the Pittsburgh Savoyards as well. I made my own schedule: four months off for summer, five days for Thanksgiving, and three weeks at Christmas. Not bad. My school was well known in the tri-state area and we faired quite well in competitions.

When 2005 rolled around I turned my focus to writing. Don’t ask me why, but I started writing  TV scripts. The Unbridled Series started out as a television drama and the Hollywood readers loved the show. I’d love to tell you that I was a huge success, but it just didn’t happen—we couldn’t sell the show to the producers. That’s right, the original dream for The Unbridled Series was for the television screen, and I’ve had reviewers mention that it would make a great TV show—yep, that’s what I thought, too. Anyway, when yet another producer turned the show down, one of the script readers suggested that I turn my scripts into a book series, and so I did. I had to adjust the dream.

Am I disappointed? Discouraged? No way! Sometimes the dream that we are blessed with is not exactly the dream that we had in mind, but we have to be flexible enough to make the dream work—reach for a different star.

So here I am: a movie star that became a dancer, er… a dance teacher, and a television writer that became an author—an author of two book series: The Unbridled Series and The First Force Series, again, not bad.  Yep, the dreams have changed over time and that’s okay—I’m making it work, or maybe I’m working with it, but ya know what? I’m having a great time!

Author Bio:
For twenty-six years Cindy’s life whirled around a song and a dance. She was a professional dancer/choreographer for most of her adult life and never gave much thought to a writing career until 2005. She often notes: Don’t ask me what happened, but suddenly I felt drawn to my computer to write about things that I have experienced with my husband’s Thoroughbreds and happenings at the racetrack—she muses: they are greatly exaggerated upon of course—I’ve never been murdered. Viola! Cindy’s first book series, Unbridled, was born. Currently there are five books in the series.

Cindy is a huge fan of romantic suspense series’, especially with a military ops theme. Although she isn’t one to make New Year’s resolutions, on New Year’s Day 2013 she made a commitment to write one. Most recently, Secret Cravings Publishing has picked up her First Force Series. Currently available: Into the Crossfire, coming very soon: Book #2, To the Breaking Pointe, Book #3 Into the Dark,  and 2016 will bring Book #4 To the Brink.

People are always asking Cindy: Do you miss dance? With a bitter sweet smile on her lips she tells them: Sometimes I do. I miss my students. I miss choreographing musicals, but I love writing my books, and I love sharing them with my readers.

Cindy resides on her forty-five acre horse farm with her husband, Bill, and her Cocker Spaniel, Allister, near Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.

Release Day Blitz: Tempted by a Rogue by Lauren Smith

Title: Tempted by a Rogue
Author: Lauren Smith
Genre: Historical Regency Romance
Release Date: September 21, 2015
Cover Design: Aleta Rafton
Summary:
The rogue’s temptation would be her undoing…

Gemma Haverford knows exactly who she will marry: James Randolph, the man she’s had a secret understanding with for the last eleven years. With every letter written between them while he's been off at sea, their love has grown. Now they will be reunited with his return to England.

There’s just one problem. The man whose words she'd fallen in love with isn’t James at all…

Jasper Holland, a gentleman rogue of the first order, is trapped. Talked into a scheme by his best friend, he pretended to be James for eleven years as he wrote to Gemma, even though he'd promised James he’d break it off. But now with his return to England, his secret will come out—and he’ll lose the one woman he can’t live without.

What began as a game of words, now becomes a game of hearts, and Jasper will pay any price to call Gemma his.

James take Gemma back? That was the last thing Jasper wanted. It was also the last thing James wanted. He had his sights on Arabella now and would be announcing their engagement soon.
“No, he would not hear of any excuse, no matter whose lips did the begging. He’s not the man for you anyway, there are better men out there. Men who would love you to distraction, who would want to spend every night in a garden with you. Forget James. You’ll thank me for it later.” He prayed she’d understand one day that his deception would help her. It had hurt him to betray her like he had, she was so damned lovely, so perfect in so many ways, and knowing he’d taken away her dreams hurt him as much as she was hurting. As soon as she opened her heart again, he would be there to claim her.
“Please Jasper…” she begged softly, her sweet voice a plaintive bird’s frightened trill. The shattering pain in her eyes killed him. She was a strong woman, and he’d broken her.
Hellfire and damnation, I ought to be hanged for what I’ve done.
“It would do no good…” he repeated, wishing for her sake she would not cry.
She did. The well of tears came first, glistening in her eyes like vibrant, shining jewels, then the trembling shoulders, and at last the choked sound in her little throat.
It broke him into a thousand pieces, scattering like dust in the breeze. All that cool restraint he’d been gripping tooth and nail to keep was gone.
Gemma tried to step around him, to flee the isolated confines of the small garden shed. It was too intimate a space for them both to share, not while her despair and his desire wreaked havoc on them both. Their bodies brushed against each other, fraying his control with the soft promise of what it would feel like to hold her, to ease her pain.
He blocked her path to the door, but she tried to slip to the left, one trembling gloved hand reaching for the iron door handle, but he flung his hands out barring her way to freedom. The moment he wound his arms around her waist she railed against him, fists curled tight, beating his chest. The blows didn’t hurt though, and he let her strike out, deserving every stinging punch she gave him.
“Gemma, I’m sorry, truly I am.” Take out your anger on me, little one, I’ll still hold onto you for the gift you are. The gift he wished he could lay claim to now. Knowing he couldn’t, created a sharp ache inside his chest. She would need time to come to terms with James, and he still had the problem of his confession with the letters. He didn’t want to tell her, but he knew he had to. He was damned either way.
“How could you? How could you do this to me? I hate you! Do you hear me? I hate you Jasper!” she hissed, her fingers digging into his chest, clawing uselessly at his well-protected body. Her voice had risen in pitch when she’d shouted her last statement. Jasper sighed, thankful she’d fled to a place where no one would find them…or hear them.
He pulled her tighter to him, holding her firmly, but gently while she cried herself into a soft exhausted state. Having her in his arms felt so right. He knew he shouldn’t be thinking that, and not just because he was the one who’d made her cry. This woman was too good for a man like him. He’d done a lot of things in his life he wasn’t proud of. He’d killed men in the heat of battle, he’d seen friends blown to pieces when cannon balls exploded across the decks of his ship.
Every minute he’d been fighting for his life, trying to save himself and his crew from being killed, captured or drowned; it had been this woman here in his arms that had kept him alive. Jasper had fought to stay alive because of her. Her letters had given him courage and strength. Before every battle at sea, he’d wrapped her latest letters in a flat package and secured them against his heart beneath his shirt and uniform. Like a romantic fool, he’d wanted to have that little bit of her close to him, should he perish.
And she’ll never know, can never know how much I needed her these last few years. How she saved my life by simply writing back to me. And I’m the bloody bastard who ruined her because I couldn’t say no to James.
James had forced him to choose between him and Gemma. Could he deny the man who’d saved his life countless times whatever he asked and in turn hurt  the woman he’d come to cherish more than his own life. A devil’s predicament with no easy answer except that he was damned no matter who he chose. And he had the sinking feeling he should have protected Gemma over James, not that it would have helped. James would have broken her heart no matter what because he wouldn’t let himself fall for any woman, not when it would create a weakness in him that could be exploited.
His throat tightened and he closed his eyes, hating that so many lies rested between them, lies she didn’t even know he’d told.
“There now, shhh,” he hushed her gently, whispering against her ear. Every little choked sound escaping her lips was slicing him deeper and deeper inside. “Please, darling, I need you to dry your eyes.”
If she didn’t stop crying soon, he’d do something they’d both regret and enjoy. He’d have to kiss her and make her smile.

A Bridge Through Time by Gloria Gay

Title: A Bridge Through Time
Author: Gloria Gay
Genre: Time Travel Romance
Release Date: July 10, 2015
Publisher: Kindle Direct
Cover Artist: Killion Group
Summary:
Trapped in another era, Jane is forced to choose between her very life and the young man of the portrait, for she has fallen in love with the real version of Jestyn Greywick.

Years ago, at the age of fourteen, Jane Fielder visited England, the birth country of her parents, with her mother. A that time a strange event took place, and one that Jane never forgot. On a tour of a great estate with her mother, Jane became entranced by the portrait of a young man. She noticed that he had a pendant with the gold chain wrapped around his hand. Impulsively, Jane touched the young man’s hand and it felt warm. Now, years later, and devastated by the death of her parents, Jane returns to England as a foreign correspondent. She hopes the change of scene will make the loss of her parents easier to bear, for her health has lately taken a hit. Jane is as anxious to start her new job as she is to see the portrait again, for she wants to find out if she just imagined that the young man’s hand felt warm to her touch. Then when Jane touches the young man’s hand on the portrait again, she is blasted back in time to 1803.

She stared at him. Now that he had leaned toward her she could see his face clearly. This was the second time she had seen this man. The first time had been when she had stared at his portrait. Electricity zig-zaged through her body, clear down to her toes. What did this mean?
Jane took out a tissue from her front jacket pocket and pressed it against her cut, mopping up the blood that had trickled to her chin and neck all the time the man was speaking to her in an irate tone:
“My brother is hurt and it appears you were also injured and it serves you right!”
Jane shifted her leg to ease the shooting sparks of pain going up her side and on her right arm.
“What's your name?” Jestyn asked when Jane just stared at him.
     “What's yours?”
“Of all the insolent…I have a good mind to give you a thrashing.”
     “So you beat women?”
“You're a woman? A woman wearing breeches?” His voice was incredulous as he continued asking, “And what kind of strange breeches are these? And where did you get this lantern? Is it magic?” The man looked keenly at the strong light coming from the flashlight. “Did you use magic?”
“Magic?” said Jane looking down at her flashlight. A flashlight was magic to this guy?
“Listen,” she added when he just stared at her, “this pain is more than I can bear. I – could you help me up? My leg – something’s wrong with my left leg. I can’t get up.”
“It’s either sprained or broken,” the man replied. “You cannot walk on that – uh – limb for now.” His tone had changed on hearing she was a woman rather than a rascally youth spooking his horses on purpose.
“My name is Jane Fielder,” Jane said, in a more appeasing tone, I’m a reporter for CBS and I – I seem to have lost my way.” If this man was the only one that could help her, in spite of his strange attire, she should try to ask nicely.
“I’m Jestyn Greywick, miss,” he replied.
For a stunned moment Jane said nothing. Then she dragged out a few words. “You’re kidding, aren’t you?”
     “I beg your pardon?”
“This whole thing…” Jane said, “…your costume, dressed as Jestyn Greywick…the carriage…were you – are these scenes arranged for tourists?”
“I don’t know what you’re talking about, Miss Fielder,” he said.
“What I mean is you can’t really be serious about your name unless you’re – oh, I get it. You’re pretending to be Jestyn Greywick. That was the name of the man in the portrait I saw moments ago.”      Jane felt dizzy and probably wasn’t making sense, judging by the look in the man’s eyes.
