I read a ton of romance as a teenager, primarily because my grandmother was a voracious reader of historical romance. Around age fourteen, I started sneaking her books whenever my parents dropped me off at her house. While the content was a bit questionable for someone my age, I fell in love with these books. I stopped reading romance, and much of anything else besides text books, in college, because I was focused on my career. I started reading romance again about four years ago, and I was shocked at how much had changed. For the better. I decided to start writing and chose the genre I love to read.
When writing a book, what is your favorite part of the creative process (outline, plot, character names, editing, etc)?
I love the fledgling idea, that little burst of inspiration when a new story comes to life in my head. Sometimes I’ll be sitting at my “real” job or in my car and a character will just start talking to me. I’ve written 20k or 30k words just based on those first inklings. Now that I have three unfinished manuscripts that started that way, I’ve realized that I need to get better at outlining and plotting so that I can actually finish!
When reading a book, what genre do you find most interesting/intriguing?
I read a lot of different genres (big shout-out to my book club, Books without Bitches), but my favorite is romance. I like romantic erotica, because I need something with a bit more heat to feel satisfied (no pun intended). I guess that’s why I write in that genre as well.
If you could co-author with any author, past or present, who would you choose?
I have a bit of an author crush on J.A. Huss. Not only because I love her books, but because she gives back, to her fans and other authors. I’ve read a ton of traditionally and self-published authors, and I still come back to her books time and time again. Until 321 and Meet me in the Dark, I had never read dark romance. When I read those books, I was like, wow, just wow! I need to write some dark stuff, because it rocked my world.
Have you always wanted to write or did it come to you "later in life"?
I’ve always enjoyed writing, although for the last fifteen years it’s been focused on technical writing, for my “day” job. A few years back, I was a bit discontent. I decided to start writing again. I used my first book, Drowning in Talon, as a creative outlet and as a way to work through some things going on in my personal life. At the same time, I was reading a ton of romance/erotica. The genre is so popular because it provides the perfect escape from every-day life and I decided to try my hand at it.
First introduced to the genre by her grandmother, DJ Hunnam is an author with a true love for great romance novels. After reading hundreds of them over the last twenty years, she finally decided to put pen to paper and craft her own happily ever afters (HEA). She loves to write about strong heroines who fall in love with even sexier heroes, while tackling real-world problems. Her books are packed with sizzling scenes sure to make you blush.
A scientist by day and author by night, DJ Hunnam straddles the fence between the mundane and the erotic on a daily basis.
