Review Tour: Deacon's Law by RJ Scott

Title: Deacon's Law
Author: RJ Scott
Series: Heroes #3
Genre: M/M Romance
Release Date: October 17, 2017
Cover Design: Meredith Russell
Summary:
How can you trust the man who tried to kill you?

Undercover cop Deacon Shepherd lost everything trying to maintain his cover - the man he loved and the future he craved. He walked away and never looked back because it was the only way to keep Rafael alive.

The last thing he needs is to be dragged back in that world, but an attempt on Rafael's life is enough to make him risk his heart again.

Rafael 'Rafe' Ramirez wakes up in the hospital, the victim of a hit and run. He’s horrified when the first face he sees is that of the man who betrayed him and left him for dead three years before. Witness protection had stripped Rafe of his family and friends, and now it seems his sacrifice to bring his Uncle to justice was for nothing.

Someone wants Rafe dead, and the only way he can stay alive is to go with the murdering drug dealer who broke his heart. But how can he ever trust Deacon, and how can Deacon protect Rafe without falling in love all over again?

Deacon Shepherd has been given unwanted bodyguard duties as they have taken his focus away from his main undercover objective: get info to take down the Martinez family.  Not only has his focus been shifted but the nephew he's told to bodyguard has gotten under his skin.  Rafe Martinez may be the nephew to the head of the Martinez family but he's taken it upon himself to take his uncle down for his parents' murders.  Three years later, Rafe has a new name and a new life but the old life hasn't forgotten him, neither has Deacon.  Will they survive the dangers they now face and more importantly will they survive each other?

We fans of RJ Scott and her Heroes Trilogy have been waiting for Deacon's Law for about two years, I understand life gets in the way and most importantly characters don't always follow the author's timeline when it comes to speaking to the writer.  Characters can be tempermental little buggers that way๐Ÿ˜‰ So you are probably wondering was Deacon & Rafe's tale worth the wait?  In a word: YES!

Deacon Shepherd is a man who is set on doing his job.  Rafe is a man who is set on avenging his parents' murders.  That is about as close to spoilers that you are going to get out of me but I will say that I really love how when they come together again after three years, Rafe doesn't just fall into Deacon's arms.  He makes the man work for it and I really found that appealing.  Deacon's Law has a little bit of everything: lust, murder, romance, mystery, heat, drama, and did I mention the passion? ๐Ÿ˜‰ It's all there with RJ's usual flair and heart.  Oh, and for fans of one of her other series there is a special cameo that certainly made me smile.

As I said above, if you are like me and have been waiting for this tale for a couple of years you won't be disappointed and if this series is entirely new to you well, you'll love it too.  I should note that although each entry in the Heroes Trilogy is a standalone, I find they flow together better when read in order simply because there is some characters who pop up from previous entries.  That's just my opinion but if you do read them out of order you won't be lost either.  So if you're asking should you read Deacon's Law(or the Heroes Trilogy as a whole) my answer can be summed up in two little words: HELL YEAH!

RATING:

Rafe opened his eyes, attempting to focus on the ceiling above him. He tried to lift his hand, but it felt as if there was lead in his veins, everything heavy and he couldn’t move. They’d told him he was getting better, so what the hell had happened? Had he relapsed? Why was he convinced that they’d taken him somewhere in an ambulance? That he’d leaned against a leather jacket that smelled of sunshine and soap? He blinked until the ceiling finally coalesced into the tiles he was familiar with.

Only there were no tiles.

Instead, the ceiling was a smooth white, and there were no strip lights, just a lampshade in a curious shade of blue. He blinked again. This didn’t make sense.

But when he opened his eyes, nothing had changed. The ceiling was still white, the lampshade blue, and the drapes at the window matched the shade. The drapes. There were drapes at the window. Confusion morphed into panic and he turned his head to the right to get a better feel for where he was and he saw…him.

Sprawled awkwardly in the chair, his head back, long limbs this way and that, clearly too big for the chair, was a specter from a past that wouldn’t leave him alone.

Deacon.

Intense fear sliced into Rafe.

They’d found him, had him strapped to a bed…was it Deacon who’d tracked him down and driven a car at him? He was paralyzed with a fear that made it hard to breathe, and he yanked at his hand, hoping to escape his restraints, only he wasn’t tied down, there was no rope. Instead his hand came up fast and he rolled sideways. Catching himself and coming off the bed, forgetting the fact that his leg was in a cast and toppling sideways, falling with a crash into a cabinet. He flailed but couldn’t stop himself falling, and he knew this was it – this time he was really going to die.

Deacon was up and at his side in an instant, and Rafe wanted to shut his eyes, wanted to block out seeing Deacon’s face again as he died, but he had to watch. He wanted Deacon to see his fear, and maybe that would stop him; maybe he could make Deacon stop and think.

“Shit, Rafe— Craig,” Deacon said, and reached for him, grasping his arms.

Terror became ice inside him, and Rafe stopped fighting; like a deer caught in headlights, he froze.

“What happened?” A second man stood in the doorway, someone Rafe didn’t know – tall, dark and dangerous-looking. Maybe this new arrival could stop Deacon?

“Help me,” Rafe forced out, looking past Deacon, scrambling to stand as the ice melted and he pushed himself to move.

“He woke up, saw me, and fell out of bed,” Deacon said, and the other man came right in. There were two of them, and there was little Rafe could do to get away. There and then, he screwed his eyes shut; nothing was going to save him now.

But there was no pain, no bullet. Instead, the two men helped him to stand, and then he felt the bed at the back of his thighs and they sat him down.

“Are you okay?” Deacon asked. Even with his eyes shut, Rafe recognized his voice. He would never forget the tone of it, or the coldness of the man who’d tried to kill him. He said nothing.

“Open your eyes,” the other man asked.

No.

“Craig? Rafe? My name is Mac. We’re here to help you.”

But fear was choking him and he couldn’t breathe. “No,” he managed between attempts to inhale enough oxygen not to pass out.

“He’s panicking. What the hell did you do, D?”

“Tried to fucking kill him three years ago, remember?”

A Reason to Stay #1
Original Review June 2014:
Loved the whole concept of this plot. The fight within both Aiden and Viktor to balance what is the right thing to do as a whole and what's right for themselves. The mystery flowed beautifully and kept my interest from page one to the last, which I never wanted to come. The connection between the two men is obvious, both instantaneous and distant, even if the distant part is of Viktor's making all on his own. Definitely a must read.

Last Marine Standing #2
Original Review June 2015:
This story had me from the beginning.  From Sam's painful past and Mac and his team's rescue to having a glimpse at what the future holds for Viktor and Aiden from A Reason to Stay all the way through Sam finding Mac and himself smack dab in the middle of a very dangerous situation.  Sam's need to say thank you leads him to love but are they willing to let that love blossom considering everything they are facing?  There is intriguing mystery and involving characters from beginning to end that captured my heart and nothing was able to draw my attention away, not even eating or sleeping.  I am eagerly awaiting book 3, Deacon's Law.

Release Tour: All for Him by EM Denning

Title: All for Him
Author: EM Denning
Genre: May/December Romance
Release Date: November 1, 2017
Summary:
Ashley Hartman has always been child free by choice. It’s a decision her first husband knew about when they met and it’s the same decision that tore them apart years later. Now a thirty-six-year-old divorcee with an overly opinionated best friend and a career she no longer wants, Ashley is trying to move on with her life.

Liam White swaggers his way up her driveway and into her life a year after her swift and brutal divorce. Though he’s twelve years younger than her, their friendship is instantaneous and it’s not long before she hires him to finish the renovations on her house.

Their relationship quickly explodes into something neither of them expected. As Ashley starts to let herself believe she could have a second chance at happiness, everything goes sideways.

Ashley woke before Liam the next morning, or at least she thought she did. When she went to slide out of bed, an arm shot out and wrapped around her and he pulled her in close to him. He breathed in deeply, inhaling her scent as she relaxed against him.

“What time is it?” He mumbled as his hand started to roam her body.

“It’s a little after eight.” She grabbed his hand and held it still, then brought it to her lips and she kissed his knuckles. “I’m too sore, Liam.” She whispered, then laughed as he heaved a sigh and relaxed.

“Damn. There go my plans for the morning.”

“You already had plans for the morning.”

“Did I?” Liam buried his face in the back of her neck and sighed. “I think I’d like to stay here all day, just like this.”

“As nice as that would be, don’t we have some renovations to finish?”

Liam groaned. “Can’t I call in sick?”

“Your boss would find out.”

“Do you think she’d fire me?”

“Not likely.”

“Do you think she’d spank me?”

Ashley’s cheeks flushed, and she grinned. “Maybe.”

“Mmm. Calling in sick is sounding better and better. I won’t get fired and I might get a spanking.”

Ashley scooted to the edge of the bed, but yelped, then giggled when Liam quickly recaptured her. She struggled for a moment, but soon Liam had slid on top of her and had her wrists pinned to the mattress.

“We need to get to work, Liam. There’s so much to do.”

“Are you sure you’re too sore? Because you’re sort of hot when you wake up naked in my bed. I can’t help it.” He bent down and kissed the side of her neck.

Despite how sore she was, her body responded to his touch, to the way his hands pinned her wrists. He was powerful, yet gentle. His kisses were soft and his cock was stiff as it pressed against her. The only part of her body that wanted nothing to do with him was her stomach, which chose that moment to growl.

Liam laughed and let her go. He flopped down onto his back and shut his eyes. “Okay. Give me ten minutes to grab a cold shower and we’ll grab breakfast before we start.”

“Do you mind if I borrow something to wear?”

Liam sat up and climbed out of bed. “My clothes will be a little big on you.”

“Yes, but I don’t want to go home wearing my dress from last night, and you still have my thong.”

“I’m not giving it back, either.” Liam reached into his dresser and pulled out a T-shirt and a pair of flannel pajama pants and tossed them to Ashley. “Here. You’ll look hot in these.”

Ashley examined the oversize shirt that was covered in swear words. He’d paired it with a pair of pajama pants that were covered in ninja turtles. “I’m not sure hot is the right word to describe this outfit.”

“Are you kidding me? When girls wear their man’s clothing, it makes them ten times more fuckable. It’s hot. Trust me.”
