Sun-Kissed Summer by Marta Brown

Title: Sun-Kissed Summer
Author: Marta Brown
Genre: Contemporary, Romance, Young Adult
Release Date: July 7, 2015
Summary:
Summer can change everything.

For shy, bookish Katie Quinn, it just might after an accidental mix-up at the airport on the way to visit her grandparents for the summer leaves her stuck with the wrong suitcase. One full of short shorts, high heels, and absolutely nothing she would normally dare to wear. Until she realizes her newfound look has garnered the attention of Key West’s biggest hottie, Brad-freaking-Garrison, and might just give her the one thing she’s always dreamed of—an epic summer romance.

A romance her summertime best friend only wishes he could give her. But for Oliver, getting Katie to see him as more than just some dumb jock isn’t going to be easy after he agrees to compete against Brad in a kite-surfing competition. And if Brad has any say in it, the prize is Katie herself.

With more than just a contest on the line and a friendship at stake, will this be the summer Katie finds her footing, even if it is in someone else’s shoes?  Will Oliver finally get the courage to tell Katie how he really feels and get out of the friend-zone for good? Or, like a kite in a hurricane, will everything they’ve ever hoped for be lost in the storm?

With a quick look at the clock on my nightstand, I let out a groan at the ridiculous hour, toss off the covers, and slip out of bed. Thankful for the pair of sleep shorts I found last night that actually manage to cover both cheeks, I stomp down the hall to the top of the stairs.
“So, when you said last night you’d pick me up at six…” I trail off with crossed arms, despite Oliver’s cheery morning smile and what looks to be two cups of coffee.
“DP, baby.” He lifts the steaming cup in my direction, giving it a small shake back and forth, like a taunt.
“DP? As in, date practice?” I ask, arching a brow as I trudge down the stairs and snatch the hot coffee from his grip. “You know, six pm would probably be a more fitting time to practice for say, a date. Don’t you think?”
Oliver takes a long sip of his drink while holding back a laugh. “Under normal circumstances, I would say yes, but we have nearly seventeen years to make up for in just one day.”
My cheeks catch fire at the reminder of how inexperienced I am, leaving me to wonder how in the world some silly, fake date is going to help when I’m so obviously beyond help at this point anyway.
“You know what? I change my mind. I’m going back to bed.” Turning, I manage to take a single step before Oliver’s large, muscular arms wrap around my waist and pull me back against his chest.
“Oh no, you don’t,” he says, humor lacing every word as he loosens his hold just enough so I’m able to twist around and face him—the small cups of coffee providing the only space between our two bodies. “I have big plans for us today. But, first things first. We have dawn patrol.”
Oh. DP stands for dawn patrol. Wait. What the heck is that?
The look on my face must tip him off to the fact I have no idea what he’s talking about because before I can ask, he shakes his head and laughs. “Dawn patrol is what we call an early morning kite-surfing session. And if we want a chance at winning the contest next week, we need practice. And you know what they say, don’t you?” Oliver grins as he lets the arm that is wrapped around my waist fall to his side before taking a small step back.
“Uh…no. What do they say?” I ask, slightly out of breath and strangely disappointed by the sudden amount of space between us.
“Easy.” He winks. “Practice makes perfect.”
Biting my lip, I don’t know if he’s talking about dating, kite surfing, or both. But by the way my heart is beating double time, I’m starting to think Oliver might just be the perfect guy to practice with either way.

Position 4

This was supposed to be heaven on Earth. I finally got the one thing in the world I desperately wanted--my brilliant but damaged ex-boss, Jude Lazarus. He has finally dropped the games and opened his heart to me completely. But instead my life has become a living hell. Suddenly everything is on the line. And the decision is mine. Which am I willing to sacrifice: my love or my life?

Position 1
He smiles, sets the cup down on the coffee table, and prepares it for me. As Lazarus looks over my résumé, my stomach clenches into a fist. In a million years I wouldn’t have expected Jude Lazarus to look at my lame little résumé. I hold the warm cup in my hand and take the moment to study him. There’s a small mole just under his jawbone and his eyelashes are wickedly long. Then I catch myself and look away. What is the matter with you? You’re not a moonyeyed teenager! What are you going to do? Print out a poster of the guy and put it up in your locker? Get a grip! I hate feeling under the sway of anyone. It makes me feel out of control, and out of control is very bad. “Michaela Clark,” he reads from the header. “You sound famous already.” I smile at the sound of him saying my name. He grins at me, sending beautiful laugh lines around his amber eyes. Oh, fuck control. I’m in love. “You graduated magna cum laude?” he asks without looking up. “Yes, sir,” I say, realizing immediately how stupid I sound. He smiles again and looks up at me; the glint is back in his eyes. “You make me feel like an old man.” “I’m sorry,” I stammer. “I meant Mr. Lazarus.” “How about Jude?” I smile. “Okay.” “You have a degree in architecture?” he arches his eyebrows, impressed. “And environmental design.” He laughs and the gorgeous crinkles are around his eyes again. “Usually my assistants are just glorified secretaries. Are you familiar with my work?” “Are you kidding?” I stammer. “It’s why I want to work here!” Lazarus looks at me for a moment, as if unsure whether I’m telling the truth. He leans back in his chair. “Anything in particular?” My brain flies at a mile a minute as I flash on all of the incredible buildings and interiors Lazarus has designed. He watches me carefully. “Okay, that place in Marrakesh,” I blurt out at last. “With the white marble interior? I love the upward curve of the ceiling that invites people into the public space. It’s a culturally astute element that speaks to the local civic values of community and purity and social virtue. Also, it’s an aesthetic work of art.” Lazarus stares at me for a long time. He closes the folder and tosses it onto his desk. “Why did Eva say you weren’t qualified?” I clear my throat. “Well, we could start with the obvious.” I look down at my damp filthy clothes. “Plus, she says you don’t hire new graduates. That I should go get an internship somewhere. Get a little experience.” “Oh, bullshit,” he mutters. He studies me as I sit squirming in my chair. My heart is racing and I realize that I’m clenching my fists in anticipation. Jude Lazarus has the power to change my life. *Oh, please. Oh, please. Oh, please.* Finally, he nods to himself, decision made. “Frankly, Michaela,” he says getting to his feet. “I think you were made for this position.”

My Wounded Soldier: Fight for Love by Diane Munier

Title: Fight for Love
Author: Diane Munier
Series: My Wounded Soldier #2
Genre: Historical Western Romance
Release Date: August 7, 2015
Cover Design: Bookstylings

Summary:
Tom Tanner has taken on a family. He lived through the war, but becoming a lover and pa to two small children may be the role that breaks him. This is the story of a man’s slow rise from black sheep to patriarch. 1866 is a time of learning to carry on in the aftermath of civil war. Tom is ready to heal, ready to take over Addie’s farm and make it a grand place. He has money from reupping in the war and reward money for bringing a few notorious outlaws. Can Addie’s love help him settle and become an outstanding man like his pa? It’s the only fight worth making-- a fight for love

She told me of her mother then.  Greta.  She took in washing. And brought men home. And my wife, a slight girl scrubbing on the board.  That’s what I felt in her hands.  So sweetly shaped, so brined to the work.  A lady almost, but not in her marrow.  There, the laundry girl, the dirty laundry girl.  And the men.  Her learning to stand, given a knife by the neighbor woman. “Protect yourself,” the woman said. “No one else will.” And so she did, too young, too scared, too soon.

Like Johnny.  He got took to the dark and it stabbed the tender in him and the dark came in.

I sat up and held her to me, stroking her hair while she told me.  I felt so many things with her, the fear, yes, the joy, yes.  The old wounds, yes.  The new wonder of it, yes.  The mother, and back more.  The girl, yes.  The little broken one, yes.  No man to ever rise up, and if he did, she met him with just herself and her brave eyes.

“Lass,” I said, but only once.  I did not wish to let the pump run dry, for her words gifted me an understanding I had lacked.

I would be the pa to her sometimes.  I knew that now.  She wouldn’t want it much, but sometimes she would, almost like Johnny, me going back in her, me angry for her, saying what she knew and didn’t get a chance to rail about.  Letting her know I was here now.  I was here.

It was a part of it for us.  There was this little one in there still holding that knife, sometimes at me, yes that’s what I saw.  That knife she used and left in a man who tried to take her in an alley. That’s when she met him—her husband. She went in his store after the attack. He was kind. But God…he was weak.

But that’s how he got in.  He wiped her face, but he was no hero.  She made him feel, and then he couldn’t find it in himself to love her.  She was something he hadn’t seen…too alive…too much of everything.

“I am not him,” I told her, and oh I was not.  The dark had its hands around my throat time and time, but it did not finish me.  I was just a man, but I stood tall.  Like it or don’t, I did the hard thing.

“I am Tom Tanner, your man,” I said, “the good of him, the ugly, too.  But I am not Richard Varn.  I have my own sins, but I do not carry the sins of another.  Nor will I,” I said, not sure what I meant by this speech, but I said it with force.

Fight for Glory #1
Summary:
Wounded Soldier, Book One: Fight for Glory, is my newest offering on Amazon. This is the saga of Tom Tanner and his reluctant love for Addie Varner.

After he mustered out of the Twenty-Seventh, Tom never expected to follow the boys home to Illinois. Having failed to protect his older brother Garrett, Tom planned to take his wounds out west where a man could get lost under the endless sky. But his father prevailed on him to come home and comfort his grieving mother.

Tom had nearly filled his obligation when the neighbor boy came running and calling his name as he worked in the field. Johnny was the boy that looked like his mother, Mrs. Varn. Tom had seen the woman at meeting. She rattled him some for he’d not had a woman, just that one time and he’d been liquored up and taking a dare and were he to have one, she was not hardship to look at. But Johnny was calling for him. Tom knew the sounds of war. The country was rife with veterans, some looking for trouble instead of home. What Tom finds at the Varner’s farm offers him a new kind of battle, a new kind of glory trail.

I have been writing this story for fifteen years. In its various forms it has garnered attention in literary contests and with a number of writerly folks. But stuck in ‘bridesmaid,’ mode it has never really walked the aisle. Until now. I hope you give it a spin and maybe fall in love.

Author Bio:
Living comfortably in the heart of America with the people I love. I live an extroverted life, but I'm a genuine introvert. An urban kid, I spent much of my youth running in various neighborhood establishments. There I met many colorful characters and I learned to love them and be fascinated by them. My love of story comes from them. I learned to sit on a bar stool or a kitchen chair or in a pew and hear story. Hear the voices telling story. See the mouths move and the hands clutching glasses or cigarettes. See and hear the laughter. There is no greater honor than to hear someone's story. If you feel that way about the tales I tell...what more could I ask.
