Saturday's Series Spotlight: Personal by KC Wells

Making it Personal #1
Summary:
Blake Davis is in the closet. And he’s going to stay that way. Because if his father finds out he’s gay, Blake could lose everything he’s worked so hard to achieve during the last six years as CEO of Trinity Publishing, the fastest rising star in the publishing firmament. Not that coming out wouldn’t solve a couple of problems. Maybe then his father would stop trying to set him up with yet another empty-headed, social-climbing girlfriend. And better still, Blake could stop using that escort agency when he wants a night of hot sex with a cute guy…

Will Parkinson has had a tough life so far, but he’s back on his feet. Okay, so he’s working as an escort – with ‘benefits’– to pay off his student loans, but that does have its advantages, such as the really hot guy who hired him. Yeah, Blake rocked his world last night – several times. So imagine how Will feels when he arrives to be interviewed for his dream job as PA in a publishing company, and the guy who’s hiring is….. Blake.

And then things get really complicated….

The minute Blake and Will meet, you just know that life is about to change for them.  There is romance, lust, sex, power, humor, and what kind of story would it be if you didn't have someone to hate?  In Making it Personal, hating comes in the form of Melissa, she may not be in a large amount of the story but her deviousness owns each second of her moments.  Sometimes peoples reactions to secrets are not what we fear and Miss Wells delivers a lot to her readers in this amazing start to the Personal series.

As it turns out, they needn’t have worried. Rick has a guardian angel…

When Angelo Tarallo sees Rick for the first time, it’s a match made in Heaven, as far as he’s concerned. And when he rescues Rick from danger, it gives him the opportunity to get to know the man who has captivated him. Before long, it’s plain to both men that this could lead somewhere. But when Angelo’s traditional Sicilian family finally discover what he’s been hiding from them for so long, an ultimatum spells heartache for the lovers – and worse.

After having an epiphany during a very hot menage, Rick realizes that he is finally ready to find what his friend and boss, Will and Blake, have.  He's not real lucky at first but when Angelo saves the day, everything starts to click.  With most of the returning cast from Making it Personal, you once again have a little bit of everything.  Watching Rick and Angelo stumble through this thing called love has it's ups and downs but, simply put is FUN!

Personal Secrets #3
Summary:
This book is an erotic gay romance. It contains explicit language and lots of steamy sex between two hot guys. For readers 18+ only.

Blake Davis and husband Will are delighted when Ed Fellows turns up at the hospital the night their daughter is born—even if he is covered in mud from playing rugby and drunk out of his skull. Team-mate Colin is the Good Samaritan who drives him there, and when he takes Ed home, Colin finds himself on the receiving end of a blow-job. He has no problem with that whatsoever. He’s been in lust with Ed since Ed joined the rugby team some fourteen months ago. Only thing is, Colin’s assumed up ’til now that Ed is straight. Except the man sucking him off certainly didn’t seem straight….

Talk about the morning after the night before…. Ed awakens to find a nearly-naked Colin asleep on his sofa. The problem is that for some reason, he can’t get Colin out of his mind. Okay, so it wasn’t the first blow-job Ed’s ever gotten from a guy—or given, for that matter—but that was a long time ago, right? And why does Ed now want more?

With friends Rick, Angelo, Blake and Will to advise him, Ed finds himself on a completely unfamiliar road, as he struggles to accept that maybe the line he is walking isn’t as straight as he’d first imagined….

Picking up where More than Personal left off, we find a not particularly sober Ed and his teammate Colin trying to wind down after leaving Blake and Will at the hospital.  Not exactly Colin's idea of "winding down" but how can he say no?  As much as I enjoy Rick and Angelo, Ed and Colin definitely give Blake and Will a run for their money in the heat department.  The chemistry between these two just saturate every page.  Throw in some confusion and revelations and once again you are looking at a fully packed installment in the Personal series.

RATING:

Strictly Personal #3.5
Summary:
Colin has a romantic, long Valentine’s Day weekend planned for Ed. A visit to Manchester’s Canal Street, a really nice hotel, complete with four poster bed, and an intimate meal in a restaurant.

Unfortunately, things don’t go quite according to plan, and when one of them ends up in a police cell, Colin’s plans have to take a back seat.

Blake Davis can’t stay out of it once he hears what’s happened and turns up to lend a hand, and then it seems all of Ed’s fears about Friday the thirteenth being unlucky are about to be realized.

This was definitely not what Colin had in mind….

Valentine's Day for Ed and Colin don't go quite as smoothly as Colin hoped.  Although, plans may deviate for the lovers from the scheduled course, it doesn't mean the holiday is ruined.  Blake and Will don't exactly come to the rescue but they do help Ed and Colin with a new course.  You don't want to miss this awesome holiday romp.

Personal The Complete Series Box Set
Summary:
For the first time, all the men of the Personal series, together!

Making it Personal #1
Chapter One
Blake Davis unlocked the main glass door which led into the reception of Trinity Publishing. As usual, he was the first to arrive, although he knew that Ed Fellows wouldn’t be too far behind him: his second-in-command would need his customary caffeine jolt to kick-start his day. He went into the small but well-equipped kitchen serving his floor and mechanically set up the two coffee pots that would be required by his staff. Another grin: how many CEOs did this every morning?

With the machines gurgling and the wonderful aroma starting to filter through the kitchen, Blake went to his office. The empty office next door reminded Blake of his lack of a PA, which he hoped to have resolved within the next day. He entered his private washroom and hung his overcoat on a hanger, pausing in front of the mirror.

Will today be the day?

No sooner had that thought crossed Blake’s mind, another was hot on its heels.

Just give it up, for God’s sake. You know he’ll never do it. He’d have to be at death’s door first.

Blake stared resignedly at his reflection in the floor length mirror, his fingers automatically manipulating the dark blue silk tie until it was perfect. He stepped back, casting a critical eye at the overall effect, trying to ignore the thought that had filtered through his brain with annoying regularity during the past two years.

His navy pinstripe suit fit his contours perfectly, the pale blue of his shirt a good color against the pearly skin at the base of his throat. The figure in the mirror was lean, slim-hipped, narrow at the waist, flaring nicely to a broad chest. Short, black hair framed a clear, creamy complexion, which brought out the startling Mediterranean blue of Blake’s eyes, so blue in fact people often thought mistakenly that he wore contacts.

One last look in the mirror. Funny: he didn’t feel any older. Those azure eyes stared back at him and Blake smiled tiredly.

“Happy 30th Birthday,” he whispered to his reflection. His ritual thought prodded him once more, prompting a brief swell of hope within his chest, but cynicism won out.

Not a fucking chance.

He puffed out a sigh of sheer exasperation and exited the bathroom. Tossing his morning newspaper onto the sofa by the window, Blake gazed down at London. It was only 7.30a.m., but already the streets below were steadily filling as people went about the business of getting to work in the cold, still October morning. He leaned on the glass, his eyes unseeing for a moment, his thoughts on his own situation.

“Christ, being thirty ain’t that bad, is it, boss? Thinking of jumpin’ already?”

Blake gave a slight start as Ed’s words broke through his internal meanderings. He smiled at his office manager who was standing in the doorway, his leather biker’s jacket slung over his shoulder.

“Cheeky sod.” He gestured with his head towards the kitchen. “Coffee’s on.”

Ed gave a moan. “’Ave I told ya recently that I love ya, boss?”

Blake laughed. “Just get in that kitchen and pour us both a mug, then get your arse back here. I’ll go through the plans for today.”

Ed briskly nodded and departed in search of his caffeine fix. Blake shook his head, smiling. He loved the effortless banter that always occurred between him and Ed. There was no formality: Blake might well be the CEO, but he interacted with all his staff in the same easy-going manner. Not that his father approved, of course, but then he’d run the company along much more regimented lines.

Just then, his eyes alighted on the portrait behind his desk, and the smile faded. His father stared out from the canvas, face caught in a warm, caring expression. Blake gazed for a minute or two at Justin Davis, the public face of Trinity Publishing, the man who everyone knew as the driving force behind the fastest growing publishing company in Europe. Blake’s jaw tightened.

“He’s gotta let go at some point, Blake.”

Ed’s tone was warm and understanding. Blake looked across at the earnest young man who was watching him anxiously. Blake pressed his lips together.

“Let’s get on with it, shall we?”

Ed nodded once, message received and understood. The two men sat on the sofa, as Blake ran through the details of the day, including the itinerary for the team meeting at 9.00a.m. Ed took notes, Blake smiling inwardly as he watched Ed trying to keep up with Blake’s fast-paced, efficient delivery.

“When does that new PA of yours start?” Ed asked with a hopeful expression.

“Give me a chance,” Blake retorted. “I’m not even interviewing him until tomorrow.” He glanced down and tapped the manila folder on his knee with his index finger. “But if he’s half as good in the flesh as he is on paper, the interview will be merely a formality.”

“Oh, thank God!” exhaled Ed, causing Blake to chuckle. “And I don’t mean to be rude or nothin’, but please, boss, can you try and keep this one?” Blake’s eyebrows shot up and Ed laughed. “Oh, come on, we’ve all read the exit evaluations from your numerous PAs.”

Blake felt his cheeks heat up. “It wasn’t all my fault,” he declared, stubbornly.

Ed chuckled. “Boss, they all said the same thing: you’re a bleedin’ tyrant.” He grinned at Blake’s expression. “Okay, so they didn’t actually say that,” he acknowledged grudgingly, if amused, “but the general consensus was that you expected a hell of a lot from ’em.” Ed’s tone became sincere. “Maybe you’ve got the right idea, gettin’ yerself a male PA. This one might have more stayin’ power.”

Blake looked down once more at the folder. God, he hoped so.

“Happy Birthday, boss!”

Blake smiled as the chorus greeted him on entering the conference room, his team already assembled around the polished circular beech table, all eyes on him.

“Thanks, guys.” Blake smiled once more, until he caught sight of the remaining empty chair, festooned with balloons, all bearing the number 30. He groaned. “What did I say? You know I didn’t want this sort of thing.” Everyone laughed, Ed most of all.

Rick grinned.

“Aw, come on, boss, you’re only thirty once.” His eyes gleamed wickedly. “So I take it you won’t be out celebrating tonight with the lovely Melissa?”

Blake let out a heartfelt groan. Everyone chuckled. Damn his father. Justin Davis seemed determined to find Blake a girlfriend, and was forever trying to set him up with various socialites who all seemed to come from the same mold; vacuous, empty-headed, obsessed with celebrities, and not a decent conversationalist amongst them. Melissa Richards was the latest, but the most determined. The entire team was aware of the situation and sympathized with Blake wholeheartedly.

What none of them knew, of course, was that Melissa’s determination would get her absolutely nowhere. Not unless she turned out to be a guy in drag.

“This one seems more tenacious than the others,” commented Lizzie, smirking. Blake leveled a hard stare in her direction, but couldn’t quite control twitch of his lips.

“Now listen, you lot,” he began, trying to sound stern. “If she drops by today unannounced—and let’s face it, based on recent events that’s very likely—play nice!” He stared fixedly at his team, spearing them with his gaze. So much for his hard stares: six pairs of eyes met his, all containing varying degrees of amusement. It was bad enough when his father came by without warning. As for Melissa, Blake had tried to drop hints, but they had simply sailed over her head.

“Enough chat, people,” Blake announced firmly. “Let’s get started.”

The atmosphere changed instantly, as each member of the team delivered their updates on the latest authors and contracts. October seemed to be a bumper month for submissions, and Blake was going to have his work cut out for him in the weeks that followed. His approach was very much hands-on, and he tried to skim through at least twenty fiction submissions a week, which usually meant several late nights spent on his laptop, picking at a meal. He sighed internally: one of these days he really needed to get himself a life.

He looked around the desk at the team of five people, all of whom he’d employed when he’d come into the company at the tender age of twenty-four. His father’s team had all born the same distinguishing marks: fifty-plus, no sense of humor, staid, and with no vision. It hadn’t taken Blake long to see that drastic changes had to be made. And they were a damn fine bunch. Blake had hand-picked them all. Each person had their own team and was responsible for the efficiency and success of every person under them. They dealt with every facet of the business, with absolute authority to run things as they saw fit. No one came bitching or whining to Blake, they just got on with it. Blake glowed with pride. Never mind what his father said—these guys walked the walk.

“Earth to Boss, come in, Boss!”

Blake started, his reverie broken by Rick’s amused exclamation. He gave Rick a mock stern glance, but the tousled-haired young man simply grinned at him, and finally Blake had to grin back. “Sorry,” he apologized.

Peter smiled and winked at the rest of the team. “’S okay, boss, you have to expect these lapses of concentration—at your age.” His eyes gleamed with mischief as the laughter broke out. They all knew Peter was older than the rest of them.

“Right, that’s it.” Blake stood up abruptly. “Are we all done?” Nods from around the table. “Then off to work, people.” He clapped his hands together briskly. Chairs were pushed back and one by one his team filed out of the conference room, until only he and Ed remained. Ed was staring at him, deep in thought. “Something wrong, Ed?”

Ed hesitated for a second, and then shook his head.

Blake arched his brows. “Come on, you clearly have something on your mind.”

Ed lowered his gaze to the table for a second or two, and then met Blake’s inquisitive look. He took a deep breath, obviously uncomfortable. Blake was immediately intrigued.

“’As... ’as yer Dad given ya any indication as to when he’ll finally ’and the reins over to ya?” Blake’s eyebrows shot up. Ed smiled nervously. “It’s just that... we’ve all been talkin’, Blake, and to be honest... this whole situation is just total crap as far as we’re concerned.”

Blake sat back in his chair, slowly running his fingers along the polished surface, not meeting Ed’s gaze. Finally he looked up.

“Close the door,” he said softly. Ed hurriedly complied and then sat down facing Blake, his expression now anxious.

Blake sighed. “What’s this about?” he asked quietly but firmly.

Ed groaned. “I knew I shouldn’t have said anythin’.” He exhaled unsteadily. “Blake, since you took over when yer dad had the ’eart attack, you’ve turned this company around. You’ve completely changed the way Trinity does business, and the profits speak for themselves. You’re a great boss to work for, yer staff thinks the sun shines out of your arse,”—Blake chuckled—“and yet as far as everyone out there knows,” he said, nodding towards the window, “all that success is down to Justin Davis. They still think he’s in charge, they all think he’s achieved bleedin’ miracles with the company.... ” Ed’s voice wavered slightly with indignation.

“So you want to know why I’m running the company, but he’s getting all the plaudits, is that it?”

Ed nodded. “I’m sorry, Blake, but this stinks! You’ve worked wonders with this company, but everyone thinks you’re the CEO.”

“I am the CEO!” Blake retorted, astonished.

“No, you’re not!” Ed exclaimed, cheeks heating up. “Come on, boss, Justin gave you the company six years ago. Said he was stepping down, time to give the younger generation a chance, an’ all that shit.” Blake’s mouth dropped open at this unusual outburst from his manager. “But he didn’t tell anyone else that, did he? Fuck, he even kept his ’eart attack quiet. And he ’asn’t stepped down. He still waltzes in here, checking up on ya, querying every fuckin’ move ya make… ” Ed inhaled, visibly trying to calm himself. “Blake, why is he doin’ this?”

Blake contemplated his hands on the table, his fingers laced together.

“I think at first he was afraid,” he said at last. “Afraid of what the public would say if they found out that the company was being run by someone just out of college, the ink barely dry on his business and marketing degree.”

“That’s what we all thought, too,” Ed admitted. “But what’s his excuse now? Blake, you’re thirty today. Isn’t it time he acknowledged your achievements with the company? I mean, how could ya just sit there last year when he won the Enterprise of the Year award? On the back of all your ’ard work?”

Blake stared at Ed. “So what should I have done? Gone to the awards ceremony and told the world they’d given it to the wrong man? And what would that have done to Dad? He’d have been humiliated.” He shook his head. “No, I have to trust that one day he’s going to do the right thing. And yeah, I’d kind of hoped today would be that day.”

Ed was looking at him with such an expression of sympathy that Blake was touched. He gave his manager what he hoped was a reassuring smile.

“But until that day arrives, it’s business as usual, all right? Which means I have a company to run, and sitting here gassing with you won’t achieve that.” He got to his feet, walked over to Ed and patted him fondly on the shoulder. “So let’s get to work, shall we?”

Ed’s eyes met his for a moment. Finally he nodded. “You’re the boss.”

Blake smiled again, more warmly this time. “That’s right, I am.” So come on, Dad…. Have a little faith in me, why don’t you?

“Good morning, son.”

Blake groaned inwardly as his father strode into the office, no knock to announce his arrival, as usual. He watched as Justin Davis walked up to the desk and started to leaf through the papers which sat there in neat piles.

“Good morning, Dad. Can I help you with something?” Blake tried his utmost to remain calm, but his father tried his patience. He took the contracts from Justin’s hands, noting his father’s quick scowl of annoyance. Christ, the man just doesn’t learn. “I didn’t know you were coming here this morning.”

Justin wore an expression of surprise. “Of course I’m here—it’s your birthday, isn’t it?” Blake had to work hard to keep his face straight. Justin Davis had an appalling track record when it came to remembering birthdays and special occasions. Blake knew for a fact that every year it had been his father’s secretary who’d bought him a birthday card. And as for birthday presents? Books. Or book vouchers. Every year. It was a good thing Blake was a voracious reader.

“Dad, don’t get me wrong, I’m glad to see you,” Blake began, a smile pasted on. “But I have a lot of work to do today, and not a lot of time to spend with you.”

Justin’s scowl was back. “Yes, and why do you still not have a PA? At least then, you’d be able to delegate some of the things you’re doing.” His scowl deepened. “And I’m pretty sure that team of yours could be doing more. What about that ruffian, Ed something, your so-called office manager? Can’t you delegate more work to him? Though what you see in him, I’ll never know. The man’s as rough as a bear’s arse.” The derisive note in his voice was suddenly too much for Blake to bear, and as for him denigrating Blake’s team….

“I’m on it, Dad. I’m interviewing a candidate for the position tomorrow.” He picked up the folder which contained all the details and brandished it at his father. “Will Parkinson: excellent qualifications, glowing references, seems ambitious—he looks perfect.”

Justin’s jaw dropped. “A man? You’re interviewing for a male PA?”

Christ, I knew I shouldn’t have said anything. “Yes, Dad. You got a problem with that?” No sooner had the words left his lips, than Blake knew it was a mistake. Justin Davis bristled, his jaw clenched.

“Far be it from me to tell you how to run things, son…” his father began. Blake stared in frank astonishment. The man does nothing but tell me.

“Then don’t, Dad.” Blake watched as Justin snapped his head up, eyes wide. “I seem to be doing pretty well without your advice, don’t I?” Blake picked up the morning’s newspaper and turned to the financial pages. “We made ink again. Profits are up—again. And the new markets are proving to be a success.” He threw the paper down onto the desk, a gauntlet of sorts—if his father dared to pick it up.

Justin’s lips narrowed. “I can’t deny you’ve turned the company around, Blake.” Well, that was a first. “And starting up a department for translating books into other languages, well, it’s not an avenue I ever explored, certainly, but it seems to be paying off.” Justin’s eyes locked onto Blake’s. “But I can’t say I’m happy about this idea of yours of selling these…male/male books.” His mouth twisted as he spoke, as though the words themselves left a nasty taste in his mouth.

Blake gave his father a patient smile.

“Have you even looked to see just how much business those books are bringing in? Gay fiction is a huge market, Dad… and it’s a genre that’s growing more popular all the time.” It was clear from Justin’s expression, however, that this argument cut no ice, and for a second, Blake’s gut twisted. If his father felt this way about gay fiction…. Blake waited to see if his father would add anything, but Justin kept silent.

Blake walked toward the door and opened it. He turned to his father.

“Thanks for stopping by, Dad, but I really do have a lot on for today.” He smiled, hoping that Justin would take up the hint. To his relief, his father gave a brisk nod and made his way to the door. As he passed Blake, Justin’s eyes met his.

“Happy Birthday, son.” He paused. “Will you be seeing Melissa this evening?”

Blake kept his face straight. “No, Dad, not tonight.”

Justin’s expression revealed his disappointment. “Oh.” He obviously wanted to say more on the subject, but after a glance at Blake’s face, seemed to change his mind. Nodding once more, Justin filed past his son and out of the office, Blake watching from the door as his father exited the floor. He let out his pent-up breath in a long push of air.

Closing the office door behind him, Blake sat down behind his desk and leaned back into it. It had been tough growing up without a mother. Blake and his father had muddled on as best they could since her death from lung cancer when Blake was thirteen, but theirs had not been a close relationship. The two men were nothing alike. When Blake first realized he was gay at the age of sixteen, he’d fought against the very idea. He already felt alienated from his father—there was no way he wanted yet another thing to expand the yawning chasm between them.

As to what made him hide his sexuality? Vivid memories of when his uncle Dominic came to visit. Dominic was his mother’s brother and not one to hide the fact that he was gay. All Blake knew was that his father hated Dominic, and that was enough to keep him in his warm, safe closet for the foreseeable future. Dates with Melissa so far had been briefs forays to clubs and a couple of dinners. Certainly nothing intimate. Blake was hoping she’d get the message and give up, the same as all the would-be girlfriends his father had organized in the past. So far not one of them had commented on the fact that Blake hadn’t made a move to get them into bed. And as long as it stayed that way, Blake was happy.

Blake took out his phone, scrolling through to find Jenny’s number. He stared at it for a second, his thoughts conflicted. It had been a while since he’d required Jenny’s specialist services, but right now, he needed. God, how he needed…

His mind made up, Blake called the number, smiling as he heard Jenny’s voice on the other end. Jenny always sounded as though she was smiling.

“Hi, Jenny, Blake Davis here.” Blake was happy that he didn’t have to hide with Jenny: the woman was discretion personified. Well, in her line of business, she needed to be.

“Blake!” He could hear the note of delight in her voice. They’d progressed from ‘Mr. Davis’ to ‘Blake’ over the course of the last two years, and Blake could now chat easily with her. “What can I do for you?”

“Please tell me you have someone available for tonight?” Blake couldn’t quite keep the desperate tone from his voice. Jenny chuckled in his ear, as he heard the click of her nails on the keyboard.

“Happy Birthday, by the way.”

Blake laughed. He shouldn’t have been surprised Jenny knew it was his birthday: she obviously prided herself on providing an excellent service for her clients, and knowing little details like birthdays added the personal touch. “Thanks, Jenny.” He waited, more clicking audible at the other end of the line. At last he heard her sigh of satisfaction.

“Ooh, you’re going to like this one.” There was a gleeful note in her voice that sparked Blake’s interest. “He’s new on my books, been with me about three months. But he seems to be proving very popular.” Christ, had it been that long since he’s used Jenny? Blake shook his head in disbelief. “I take it you’ll be requiring his more personal services, rather than as an escort?”

Blake snorted. “Come on, Jenny. How long have I been using J’s? Do you even have to ask?” He heard her giggle. “What’s his name?” he inquired. “And can he be at my place for about eight this evening?” Blake crossed his fingers.

“His name’s Alec, and yes, he’s available for that time. Usual rate, okay?”

Blake grinned. “Yeah, that sounds fine, Jenny. Thank you. You have my card details, don’t you?” Jenny assured him she did, and finished the call. Blake sat back in his chair, his mind suddenly on Alec and the prospect of having him in his bed. His cock twitched. Yeah, it had been far too long….

Personal Changes #2
“Morning, Boss.” Rick greeted Blake with his usual cheerful grin. He helped himself to a coffee in the small kitchen that served their floor. “I didn’t expect to see you in here today.”

Blake tilted his head as he poured out two mugs of coffee. “And why would I be taking the day off?” He regarded Rick with amusement. “I don’t recall the second of January being a national holiday, last time I looked.”

Rick smirked. “Yeah, but after New Year’s Eve I figured you and Will might have wanted a little time to yourselves. I mean, you did get engaged, right?” Rick waggled his eyebrows. “I’m sure you were both up late, seeing the New Year in.” Another suggestive leer. “Among other things.”

Blake paused mid-action and turned to face him. “Is this what I’m going to get every morning? The third degree about my private life?” The barest hint of a smile told Rick his boss hadn’t really taken offense, but Rick knew Blake. It was time to back off.

His voice softened. “Sorry, Blake. And for the record, I think it’s wonderful. You two make a beautiful couple.” That much was true. Blake with his black hair and amazing blue eyes, and Will with dark, brown hair and those eyes the color of milk chocolate—they made a striking pair.

And I’m trying desperately to forget the fact that I’ve been lusting after you for six years.

The previous week’s Christmas party had been quite the night for revelations. When Rick had got over the shock that not only was his straight boss definitely not straight, he was also in love with his PA, Rick’s first thought had been one of regret. When Blake had taken him on as part of his team, Rick had fallen in lust with him within a very short space of time. Of course, he’d never gone there—Rick had been burned enough times by making advances to straight guys to know that making a move on his dishy new boss would probably have had him out the door on his arse. It was bad enough that Will knew his secret.

“Aw, that’s sweet.” Will came into the kitchen and grinned at Rick, before taking the mug Blake handed him. “Thanks, babe.”

Blake shot Will a warning glance. Will’s grin faltered, until Blake patted his arm, smiled at them both and then exited the kitchen with his coffee mug. Will watched him go, an unreadable expression on his face.

“And what was that look all about?” Rick sensed a little tension in the air.

Will huffed. “We had a talk this morning, that’s all, about my future here. Oh, and how we were going to play things from now on.”

“Let me guess. Act professional, no being all lovey-dovey.”

Will nodded glumly.

Rick chuckled. “I suppose that means you’ve seen the last of any shenanigans in his office.”

Will groaned. “Oh God, don’t remind me. Besides, he has a point. I mean, look what happened that last time he and I…”

He didn’t have to finish. Blake’s would-be fiancée Melissa hadn’t exactly caught them having sex in Blake’s office, but had seen enough to make their lives miserable. At least she was out of the picture now. And good riddance.

Something Will had said finally registered. “Back up a minute. What do you mean, talking about your future here? You’re not leaving, are you, Will?” Rick bit his lip. Will had only been with them for three months but in that time he’d become a good friend.

Will slurped his coffee and gave a low moan of appreciation. Blake made really good coffee. He warmed his hands on the mug. “Let’s just say he’s not happy about me continuing as his PA now we’re engaged.” Will scowled. “The jury is still out, however, on whether I quit. I don’t want to—I still have my student loans to pay off, after all—but he says it’s something we need to consider seriously.”

Rick patted Will’s arm. “Now don’t you two fall out about this.” Not that he could see much coming between the two men. Watching them together at the New Year’s Eve party a couple of nights ago had been just beautiful. Rick had to admit, the two men really fitted each other. Never mind that it had only been three months since Will had strolled into Trinity Publishing and into Blake’s life. When you know, you know, he reasoned with himself. And the heart knows what it wants.

Will smiled. “Don’t worry about us. We’ll sort it out, trust me.” He leveled an intense stare at Rick. “But what about you? Made any New Year’s resolutions?” He tilted his head. “And you know I’m talking about your love life here.” His expression softened. “We need to find you a guy, Rick. I’m going to make it my mission this year.” He gave a decisive nod.

Rick snorted. “Good luck with that.”

Will’s brow furrowed. “What do you mean?”

Rick let out a sigh and sipped his coffee. “I haven’t been as lucky as you and Blake in that department. I seem to have lousy taste in men.”

Will eyed him keenly. “Have you been looking? And if so, where have you been looking?”

Rick thought for a moment and then walked over to the door. He pushed it shut and leaned back against it. Will regarded him curiously.

“Look,” Rick began, lowering his voice, “the longest relationship I’ve had lasted three months. Men don’t seem to want to stick around me. So now I take what I can get.”

“What does that mean?” Will’s voice was suddenly as low as Rick’s.

Rick expelled his breath. “It means I go to a lot of clubs and I have a lot of casual sex, okay?” His eyes met Will’s. “That comment I made a while ago about being in toilet stalls with guys? I wasn’t kidding.” He lowered his gaze.

“Aw, Rick, I didn’t know that’s what you were doing.” Will stepped closer and gave Rick a brief but firm hug. Rick closed his eyes. It had been a while since anyone had hugged him. When he opened them again, Will moved back and gave him a stern look. “I don’t have to ask if you’re being safe, do I?”

Rick’s chest tightened. Will was a good friend. “No, you don’t. I may be a slut, but I’m not stupid.”

The crease between Will’s eyes deepened. “I don’t like it when you talk about yourself like that.”

Rick shrugged. “I’m just being honest, that’s all. I like sex, I’m not ashamed to admit that. And yes, every Friday and Saturday, you’ll probably find me in a club, chatting up some bloke before going home with him or taking him back to mine.” He met Will’s gaze. “But if I found someone who wanted to do the whole monogamous route, someone who wanted us to be serious about each other?” He smiled. “I’d be off the club scene so fast, you’d get whiplash watching me leave.” His heart felt heavy. “Right now, there doesn’t seem to be anyone out there who wants me like that, so until then, I’ll carry on being careful and always leaving my flat with a supply of condoms.”

Will looked sad as Rick opened the door to go to his office, ready to start work, coffee mug still in his hand.

“I’m going to keep checking on you, all right?” Will said earnestly.

Rick blew him a kiss. “You’re a sweet guy, Will, and Blake’s a very lucky man.” He paused in the doorway. “Thanks, mate. I’m glad we’re friends.”

“Always.” Will’s tone was serious. “And you can come talk to me anytime, you know that?” Rick nodded.

“Okay. Then get to work, lazybones.” His eyes sparkled with good humor.

Rick tugged his hair in a subservient gesture. “Yes, sir. Right away, sir.” He winked. “Got to keep in with the boss’s boyfriend, after all.” He ducked as Will picked up a tea towel and threw it at him, missing him by inches. Rick laughed and walked along the corridor to his office.

Time to get some work done. He had a host of advance review copies to send out to review sites, not to mention setting up time for authors to meet their readers on Trinity’s Facebook page. He could get some of it done before Blake’s morning team meeting. No rest for the wicked. And the way he was feeling right now? When Friday night got here, he intended being very wicked indeed.

Personal Secrets #3
CHAPTER ONE
Something was definitely wrong with Ed Fellows.

Okay, so he hadn’t come out and said anything, but ever since he’d stepped outside the Elephant & Castle pub to talk on his phone, Ed had seemed preoccupied. Colin couldn’t help but notice the incessant glances at his phone, the restless checking and re-checking of his messages, Ed’s furrowed brow as his fingers did their best to tap the virtual keyboard. Colin had chuckled to himself at first when he’d caught the frequent, under-the-breath swearing when Ed made mistakes.

I suppose it’s hard to text when you’re pissed.

Not that Colin would know. He was stone-cold sober. Bloody antibiotics. He only had to take them for one more day, but that still meant he was on Coke for the night.

Talk about torture. He wasn’t sure why he’d gone with the rugby team to the pub after the match. They’d spent hours getting increasingly hammered, while Colin had sat there nursing his Coke, smiling at the drunken jokes and slurred speech.

Come on. You know why you came. The reason is sitting right next to you.

Colin sighed internally. Ed was leaning forward, bleary eyes fixed on his phone, thankfully oblivious to Colin’s crush. Colin glanced around the cozy pub at his team-mates, careful not to focus his attention wholly on Ed. He’d noticed Ed had drunk less since the phone call, and that expression of concern hadn’t diminished.

When ten-thirty arrived and the team was finally showing signs of bringing their binge to an end, Colin couldn’t take any more. He tugged at Ed’s elbow.

“Want to tell me what’s wrong?”

Ed twisted in his chair to regard him, forehead smoothing out almost instantly as he pasted on a bright smile. “Wrong? Nothin’s wrong.” His voice slurred slightly.

Colin snorted. “Yeah, pull the other one, mate. You don’t fool me.”

Ed stared at him in silence for a moment and then heaved a heavy sigh. The mask slipped from his face. “Okay, me boss Blake an’ ’is ’usband are expectin’ a kid, yeah? Well, Blake rang me about four hours ago to say their surrogate had gone into labor three weeks early.”

Colin was impressed. “He must be a damned good boss if you’re worried about him.” Better to react like that than to the news that Ed’s boss was not only gay, he was married.

Ed cackled. “God, me an’ Blake go way back. We were at school together.” His gaze returned to his phone. “Thing is, I’ve been textin’ ’im an’ the sod isn’t answerin’.”

“Maybe there’s no news,” Colin suggested. “Surely he’d get in touch if there was.”

Ed looked glum. “You didn’t ’ear ’is voice, Col. That man was worried.”

Colin could almost feel the concern rolling off his friend in waves. And just like that, he wanted to be the one to help him. He got to his feet and tugged Ed to stand up beside him.

“Come on,” he told his now puzzled team-mate. “I’ll take you to the hospital. I’m assuming you know which one, right?”

The look of relief on Ed’s face made Colin’s insides quiver. You don’t have a fuckin’ clue what you do to me, do you?

“Seriously?”

“Well, no other bugger here is going to drive you, are they?” Colin grinned. “’Course I’m serious. Now let’s get you there so you can put your mind at ease, okay?”

Ed’s expression softened as a smile lit up his face. “Thanks, mate,” he breathed.

In that moment, having the man rely on him felt damn good.

Colin was still reeling from the shock, although he was doing his damnedest to hide it. They’d gone straight to St. Mary’s hospital in Paddington and after some wandering around they’d eventually found Ed’s boss Blake and his husband. And it was then that Colin had done a double take.

Oh my God—that’s Will Parkinson. He knew the face so well from his frequent trips to Will’s Facebook page where Colin would read what his favorite gay romance author was up to. Then he’d schooled his face pretty quickly. Admitting he knew who Will was might lead to some awkward questions, which Colin wasn’t prepared to answer just yet. This wasn’t the time or the place—not that he had any qualms about telling Ed he was gay.

Blake was clearly surprised to see them and wanted to know why they were there. For the first time, Colin gave a thought to how they must have looked. They were still in their rugby gear, which was covered with about half the mud of the playing field. God, we look a sight! The two men ushered Colin and Ed into a little waiting room furnished with a sofa and a couple of armchairs. It had taken all Colin’s effort not to fangirl all over Will. He must have called on hitherto undiscovered acting abilities, because Will didn’t appear to notice anything. Then again, the poor guy did have a lot on his plate just then.

Ed collapsed into an armchair and addressed Blake. “Well, I’ve bin sendin’ yer texts an’ got no effin’ answer, so I got a bit worried.” He indicated Colin with a flick of a hand. “This is Colin, one of me rugby mates. Seein’ as he’s been on the Coke all night ’cause he’s on antibiotics, he volunteered to bring me ’ere.” He peered at Blake. “Be an absolute angel an’ find me a coffee, would ya? Me ’ead’s bangin’.” He paused for a second or two. “On second thoughts, you couldn’t chase up some asp’rin, could ya?” He gave Blake a hopeful look.

Blake snickered. “I’ll see what I can do.” He went toward the door.

“I ’ave told ya recently that I love ya, ain’t I, boss?” Ed batted his eyelashes.

Blake laughed. “Every time I have coffee waiting for you, yes.” He exited the room, his shoulder shaking with laughter.

Will stared at Ed in amazement. “Have you all been in the pub since Blake rang you?”

Colin snorted. “That’s nothing. When we left, half an hour ago, they were still at it.” He shook his head. “I should have just left them to it, instead of sitting around, torturing myself, watching them downing pints like they were about to be rationed.” He sat on the sofa and sagged back. “And it’s not as if this one”—he gestured toward Ed—“could drive, the state he was in. Although,” he added grudgingly, “he did stop downing his pints as fast once you’d called.”

Ed blew him a kiss. “Mwah! Ya know you only do it ’cause I’m bleedin’ adorable, Col.”

That casually thrown-out remark, so typical of Ed, almost made Colin’s heart stop. You have no idea. Ed was brash, loud at times, a bear of a man with a generous heart—and Colin had been in lust with him virtually from the time Ed had turned up to play with the team. He’d lost count of the number of times he’d berated himself for falling for a straight guy, but there was something about Ed that was compelling.

With a start Colin realized he’d been staring at Ed for far too long. He was suddenly conscious of Will’s gaze on him and hurriedly turned away. Will’s expression had been all too knowing. Colin kept his gaze trained steadfastly in any direction except Ed’s.

Blake returned to the room, carrying a clear plastic cup and a couple of tablets. He nudged Ed with his knee. “Here. Take these.” He handed them to Ed who swallowed the pills quickly, chugging the water after them.

Ed peered at Blake’s now empty hands. “Coffee?” he pleaded. Colin had to smile at that. Ed was like a little needy kid sometimes.

The door opened and a couple entered, carrying two small children. Colin got lost in all the greetings and conversation that followed. Ed leaned forward to speak in a low voice.

“That’s Lizzie an’ ’er ’usband, Dave. Lizzie works at Trinity—well, she did, until the birth of that little tyke.” He pointed to the toddler who was at present taking shaky steps toward Blake. “An’ Dave is Blake’s best mate from uni. The kids are Blake and Will’s godchildren.”

That explained the closeness which permeated the little group. Colin felt awkward for a moment, as though he were intruding on a family gathering. Such thoughts disappeared rapidly when the door opened and a diminutive woman in a white doctor’s coat entered. Judging from the speed with which Will and Blake followed her out of the room, Colin guessed all was not well with the baby. He glanced at Ed, whose eyes were trained on the door, his brow furrowed once more.

You’re a good man, Ed Fellows. It wasn’t the first time such a thought had crossed his mind.

Blake and Will came back into the little room, their faces drawn. Just the sight of them had everyone sitting up straight, Colin included.

“The baby’s in distress,” Blake explained, “so they’re doing an emergency Cesarean. Donna will be going into the operating theater in the next few minutes.” Will slipped his arm around Blake’s waist and kissed his cheek.

Ed’s face fell. “Does the doc think the baby’ll be okay?”

Will looked to Blake before replying. “She seems pretty confident, and it’s a fairly quick op.”

“Then come an’ sit down, the pair of ya.” Ed gestured to the space next to Colin on the sofa. “Just let ’em do their stuff, yeah?”

In spite of Ed’s confident air, Colin could see the tension in his body. Blake sat down next to Colin, Will beside him, and the two men held hands. For a brief moment, Colin felt envious. Blake and Will had each other, not to mention these great friends who loved and accepted them. Then he brushed it aside. A relationship like theirs was what he wanted, but it wasn’t as if it was constantly at the forefront of his mind. Colin’s philosophy was that if it happened, it happened. And if it didn’t, well, he was good with that too. There’d been one, fairly long-term relationship in his past. He and Matthew had been together for three good years, before things had started to go sour. When push came to shove, they weren’t a good fit. They’d parted amicably, and since then Colin had dated, but nothing special. In the last few years there’d been no time for anything else, as he’d concentrated on his career as a graphic designer. He had a close-knit circle of friends, his team-mates, and that had been enough.

Colin gazed at Ed who perched on the sofa, elbows on knees, hands hanging down between them. Ed’s attention was focused on the floor, affording Colin the opportunity to observe his team-mate. That body had formed a frequent component in Colin’s masturbatory fantasies of the last few months. Ed’s short, dark brown hair was a mess, and was even starting to thin a little, but Colin didn’t care. He loved those clear, green eyes and firm jaw, now covered in a scruffy beard—something which was a recent addition. And that mouth. God, the nights he’d lain in bed, fantasizing about kissing those full lips until they were red and swollen. Ed’s neck was thick, and Colin let his gaze drift lower to where a layer of dark hair was visible under his rugby shirt.

Fuck, hairy men do it for me every time.

Each time he’d glimpsed Ed in the showers after a match, it had been all he could do to keep his erection under control. He knew those shorts hid heavily-muscled thighs, the hair becoming denser on his calves. The wide chest and thick, rippling biceps were all evidence of Ed’s workouts. Hell, he had to be that size. Being the prop for the team meant he needed every inch of muscle.

Once more Colin became aware of Will’s eyes focused on him, and he quickly shifted his gaze. God, how long had he been staring at Ed? He’d completely lost track of time.

The door opened and the doctor entered, smiling. Will and Blake were on their feet in an instant.

“Gentlemen, you have a daughter. And mother and baby are both doing well.” She beamed at them.

Will turned to face Blake. “A little girl. Blake, we have a little girl.” Colin loved the note of wonder in his voice. The two men held each other, exchanging soft, loving kisses as their three friends got up to hug them, voices raised in congratulation.

“Would you like to see Donna and your daughter?”

Colin had to smile as the doctor’s words broke through, her amusement apparent. Will released Blake and met his husband’s gaze. “Let’s go see our little girl.”

Ed cleared his throat. “Okay, now I know everythin’s fine an’ dandy ’ere, I’m gonna go ’ome.” He speared Blake with an intense stare. “An’ I don’t expect to see you at work, okay?” He gave Blake a cheeky grin. “’Ave a day off on me. In fact, ’ave several. It’s called paternity leave, so I’m reliably informed.” Ed winked.

“Done,” Blake replied promptly. Both Colin and Will chuckled to see the look of faint surprise on Ed’s face. “What—you expected me to argue?” Blake snickered.

Colin got to his feet. “Come on, Ed, I’ll take you home. You need to sleep it off or you’ll be in no state for work tomorrow, Mr. Office Manager.” He grinned good-naturedly.

“That shows ’ow awake you are,” Ed cackled. “Tomorrow’s Sunday.” He was still beaming as he clapped Will on the back and gave Blake a brief, manly hug before heading for the door. Colin gave a nod to the group and followed him out. They made their way along the now quiet corridors to the elevator. Ed leaned back against the elevator walls and sighed.

“Thank God everythin’ worked out all right.” He closed his eyes.

“Will and Blake seem like a nice couple.” It felt like a safe enough remark to make.

Ed opened his eyes. “Yeah, I didn’t see that one comin’. First we all knew about it was the office Christmas party when the coppers turned up to arrest Will for assaultin’ our receptionist, Karen.”

Colin stared. “You’re kidding.”

Ed shook his head. “God’s honest truth. ’Course, it was a crock o’ shit, but when Blake told the ol’ Bill that Will couldn’t ’ave done it ’cause they’d spent the night together…”

The doors to the elevator opened and they exited. They walked out of the hospital into the dark night, heading toward the car park. Colin was still ruminating on Ed’s words.

“Wow, talk about a dramatic way to come out of the closet.”

Ed guffawed. “You can say that again. Then blow me, a week later, during the New Year’s Eve party, Blake goes an’ gets down on one knee in front of everyone and proposes.” He shook his head once more. “An’ we never ’ad a bloody clue that Blake was even gay! Just shows, you never can tell about people.”

They reached Colin’s car and got in. Ed sank his head against the support and closed his eyes.

Colin smirked. “Yeah, close your eyes, Sleeping Beauty. I’ll get you home.” He switched on the engine.

“You’re a real prince,” Ed murmured. It wasn’t long before Colin could hear the change in his breathing as Ed fell asleep.

Good job I know where you live, eh, mate? It wasn’t the first time he’d driven to Ed’s place to pick him up for rugby practice or a match. Smiling to himself, Colin pulled out of the parking bay and started on the forty minute or so journey to Ed’s flat. As he drove along, he glanced down at Ed’s muscled legs and thick calves, still spattered with mud, as were his own.

God, I need a shower, he thought. It would have to wait until he’d deposited a sleepy Ed back at his flat. He grinned to himself. Wonder how Ed would feel if I offered to tuck him up in bed? He barely held back the snort.

Yeah, like that was going to happen.

1. What is the biggest influence/interest that brought you to this genre?
The biggest influence on my science fiction writing is Robert Heinlein, although it might be more accurate to say it is a tie between Heinlein and Orson Scott Card. Two of my favorite books of all time are Starship Troopers by Heinlein and Ender’s Game by Card.

2. When writing a book, what is your favorite part of the creative process(outline, plot, character names, editing, etc)?
My favorite part of writing a novel is charging forward with a new idea, that is to say that I like the early “romance” with the story premise. For me, that is when everything comes easily and is a lot of fun.

3. When reading a book, what genre do you find most interesting/intriguing?
This is really bad, but I can’t pick one genre. For the last several years I would say that historical fiction has been the front runner in my reading habits. But I really enjoy thrillers if their good. Science fiction and fantasy will always be my foundational genres.

4. If you could co-author with any author, past or present, who would you choose?
George R. R. Martin, because I might find an opportunity to ask to pointed questions about The Song of Ice and Fire (Game of Thrones), like when will book six be on the shelves. On a more serious note, I am constantly amazed by Martin’s world building skill and how he keeps track of all the little details. The biggest thing about his writing, however, is how he builds tension and drama in each story line.

5. Have you always wanted to write or did it come to you ʺlater in lifeʺ?
I can’t remember a time when I didn’t want to write. When I was a small child, I remember seeing my first hard back journal and thinking it looked like a book, and if I could get one, I could fill it up and be an author. This was before I even had a clear idea of what an author was. My grandmother started giving me stacks of legal pads for Christmas, because I loved to fill them up with stories.

Author Bio:
Scott Moon loves audio books, especially the works of George R.R. Martin, Stephen King, Patrick O'Brian, John Ringo, David Weber, and Michael Connelly. He has been writing fantasy, science fiction, and urban fantasy thrillers for over thirty years. His professional background is law enforcement, including various tactical and investigative units. In 2005, he was part of a task force that arrested a serial killer who had been at large for over three decades.
