After Christmas Holiday Reads 2018

⛄πŸŽ„πŸŽ…πŸ’—πŸŽ…πŸŽ„⛄

Well, the holidays are over and the new year is in full swing but there were still a few Christmas romances that were burning up my Kindle.  So here are my reviews for those holiday tales and it's never too late to surround yourself with the magic of Christmas. If you find you're still in the holiday mood be sure to also check out all my Random Tales of Christmas 2018 and posts all things holiday.

Fleeting Moments by Nic Starr
Summary:
Life hasn't been easy for Matthew O'Connor lately. He's an only child and struggling to deal with his mother's Alzheimer's, as he prepares to move back to Sydney to assist with her care. Visiting her on Christmas Day brings all his worries to the surface. What if she lashes out? What if she doesn't remember him at all? However, what starts out as an emotional day fraught with concern, turns into the day of Matthew's dreams, thanks to his boyfriend, Jerry, and a special gift from his mother.

This is a FREE short story to celebrate the holiday season. To read online or to download your copy, click here.

What could be a very heartbreaking short story is actually a very heartwarming tale of love, hope, and Christmas.  For me, knowing this is something so many families deal with every day is what made this short all the more beautiful.  Fleeting Moments is one you definitely should make time to read, somehow it missed my reading radar last year but I'm so glad I came across it now.

RATING:

About Last Night by Clare London
Summary:
Roger only popped out for breakfast supplies. Was that long enough for Allen to have second thoughts?

Delightfully fun short read about the morning after and whether its destined to be more or just "about last night".

RATING:

A Soldier's Wish by NR Walker
Summary:
The year is 1969…

Gary Fairchild is proud to be a hippie college student, and he protests the Vietnam War because he believes in love and peace. To him, it isn’t just a counterculture movement—it’s a way of life. When tickets to the Aquarium Exposition—3 Days of Peace & Music, or Woodstock, as it was better known, go on sale, there’s no way he isn’t going.

Richard Ronsman is a sheltered farm boy who lives in the shadow of his overbearing father. He’s hidden his darkest secret to earn his father’s love, but nothing is ever good enough—not even volunteering for the Vietnam War. And with just a few days left before he’s deployed, he’s invited by a striking hippie to join him at a music festival.

Three days of music, drugs, rain, mud, and love forged a bond between these two very different men that would shape the rest of their lives. They share dreams and fears, and when Richard is shipped off to war, they share letters and love. For Richard’s first Christmas home, he is gifted a special angel ornament that just might make a soldier’s wish come true.

This story is one of seven stories which can all be read and enjoyed in any order.

I have to be honest and say I generally don't seek out stories told in the 60s & 70s, maybe its because I was born in 1973 so that time frame isn't old enough to be "historical" and yet its not really new enough to be "present day" either.  Don't get me wrong, I don't not read that era if a book that sounds interesting comes along but I just don't go looking for it.  So my decision to read A Soldier's Wish  was partly the intriguing way the series is connected by a Christmas angel ornament but mostly the author.  NR Walker has never let me down before and she didn't here either.

For some Richard and Gary's insta-connection might seem farfetched or reaching but I loved it.  Insta-love is not for everyone and I'm the first to admit that sometimes it just doesn't work for the characters or setting but that's not true here.  Nope, A Soldier's Wish is well written and completely believable that two people who on the surface are polar opposites but given the right atmosphere you realize that they are only perfect for each other.  I really loved how the author used letters and visits to advance the story, giving the boys a piece of each other even when physicality and location wasn't exactly on their side.  The letters especially warmed the heart.

As with my reviews for the other entries in The Christmas Angel series, each book is a standalone and can be read in any order.  I still highly recommend reading Eli Easton's Christmas Angel first though because I know I would be a bit distracted wondering about the angel's origins and that would take away from completely enjoying the entry I was reading.  However, that is just my personal opinion and no matter what order you read this series it is most certainly not one you want to miss.

Remembering You by Crystal Lacy
Summary:
When Robbie comes home for Christmas, he is confronted by Troy, the ex-step-cousin whose dad left Robbie's aunt one summer eight years ago. Can Robbie stifle lingering feelings for Troy, who was his first love and who gave him his first kiss?

I think we all that one crush that we probably still dream about once-in-a-while so reading Robbie and Troy's reconnecting was a lovely gem of a holiday tale.  Its been days since I read this and I'm still smiling when I think about it.

RATING:

Shrewd Angel by Anyta Sunday
Summary:
Pax Polo is the swashbuckling guitarist for Serenity Free.

Correction: Was the swashbuckling guitarist for Serenity Free.

Now he sports a black eye and his bros have kicked him out of their band—three weeks before Christmas. It’s an unfamiliar kick to his over-inflated ego, but . . . whatever.

No problem.

Thanks to some stellar eavesdropping, an unexpected angel ornament, and a bribe to open for his favorite band ever, Pax will weasel his way back into his mates’ good graces.

All he has to do is friend Clifford, the neighborhood man-shrew, for the summer. Distract him a bit so Clifford’s younger sister can sneak around.

It sounds like a piece of beginners Beethoven. Jolly good fun.

Easy.

Because, Pax totally knows how to friend people. He has heaps of friends. This shrew’s no match for his shrewd ways. Or is he?

Anyta Sunday is a new author for me which can be scary sometimes but it can also be exhilerating, that "is it or isn't it" moment can be a natural high that keeps my reading engines going.  Well, if you are like me and are new to Anyta Sunday than Shrewd Angel is a perfect place to start.  I'm not sure which part I liked better: the budding banter-filled slowish-burn romance between Pax and Clifford or the planning-filled friendship between Pax and Luca.  They both had me smiling.  A classic rom-com with just the right amount of drama and heat to spice up your holiday or any day of the year you pick Shrewd Angel up.  Anyta Sunday is definitely going on my authors-to-watch list.  A true reading delight from beginning to end.

The Christmas Angel series can be read in any order as the only connection is the angel ornament, however once again it is my personal opinion that Christmas Angel by  Eli Easton should be read first as you learn the whys of her origins.  Not that her beginning really has any bearing on each entry but I know I would have been a little distracted  with wondering how she came to be and that would keep me from completely enjoying each story after.

RATING:

Mr. Sparkles by RJ Scott
Summary:
When Jacob meets Celyn he hates him on sight. Too disrespectful and gaudy. Too different.

But even the grumpiest of wood carvers will find it impossible not to be won over by Mr. Sparkles.

And maybe even fall in glittery love.

This will be a free story as part of the Rainbow Advent Calendar 2018.

On the Grinch vs Elf scale, I like to think that I'd fall somewhere on the elf side of middle but even my love of everything holidays could tire of Ceyln's, well lets go with "energy"πŸ˜‰πŸ˜‰.  However, sometimes one just needs that extra dose of giddyness that Ceyln possesses to truly find the holiday spirit and that's what Jacob seems to need.  Mr. Sparkles is a deliciously delightfully fun short read jam packed with everything that makes the holiday magical.

RATING:

Bagging Santa's Elf by Kayleigh Sky
Summary:
A bah humbug Christmas elf beset with money worries thinks the solutions to his problems might be dumping his poor-artist boyfriend. This silly little elf is about to be shown the Christmas light.

A free story available from the Rainbow Advent Calendar 2018

A wonderful blend of fun, sexy, drama, humor, romance, holiday, friendship, and realization that fear of what we don't have shouldn't keep us from what we do have.  Sometimes listening to our inner voice is not the right decision.  A short fun read that will delight from beginning to end.

RATING:

Under the Felt Mistletoe by Nell Iris
Summary:
The most wonderful time of the year is about to get even better.

On a cold, rainy December morning, Finn’s beloved Grampa, his best friend and rock, makes a friend outside their home who he invites in for coffee. The last thing Finn expects is Nelson, a man with a painful past, who is beautiful and generous and turns Finn’s knees into jelly.

What starts out as a chance to get out of the rain, soon becomes more as Nelson helps Finn get ready for the Christmas market. They bond over coffee and fabric and Mariah Carey. Can handmade Christmas ornaments and an understanding heart give Nelson the love he’s been denied?

What's not to love about this holiday novella?  The characters, setting, and just overall feel is fun, romantic, sweet, and full of heart.  Finn, Nelson, and Grampa are the kind of people that make holiday reads special: comraderie, friendship, family, love, young, and young-at-heart, they are people you want to know.  Under the Felt Mistletoe has it all and more, the sights, sounds, and smells of the holiday jump off the page.  You find yourself going "awwww" quite often and that's never a bad thing because its the "aww moments" that brighten your day.  Christmastime or not, this is definitely a feel good read you don't want to miss.

RATING:

Cupcakes and Mistletoe by George Loveland
Summary:
Declan was sure he had locked the front door to his bakery shop. When a handsome man begs Declan to make him a batch of cupcakes, he knows he can’t refuse.

Fun, sweet, and full of everything that makes holiday reads special.   Would it have been better if it had been longer? Sure but sometimes short reads, especially at the holidays, are short for a reason and that's because holiday spirit means having a little magic in the air that one just has to believe in.  Who knows maybe we'll get to see these characters again, which would be wonderful but if we don't, Cupcakes and Mistletoe put a smile on my face and that is all I could ask for.

RATING:

A Star Crossed Christmas by VL Locey
Summary:
Cayuga Cougars #5.5
Being the new man in the crease can be tough. Mitch Adams, former back-up for the Cougars is now the main man in goal, replacing August Miles, who was recently called up to the pros. There are lots of new things happening in Mitch’s life and not everything is because of hockey.

Two years ago, he shared an explosive kiss with his childhood friend, Olympic snowboarder, Shaun Sandbeck. Since then, Mitch has been more than a little confused about a multitude of things pertaining to who he is, his sexuality, and the fact that he can’t stop thinking about that kiss and how he wants more.

For Mitch, going home for Christmas is a chance to find his focus and face the man who caused all this confusion. Is it possible for the two men to untangle lust from love, and find a future together that works?

Previously published in the Hockey Holidays Anthology

I originally read this as part of the Hockey Holidays Anthology a few weeks ago and loved it, as a matter of fact I loved Mitch and Shaun's story so much I re-read it already.  Now I haven't read the author's Cayuga Cougars series but I was by no means lost, if anything its made me want to bump this series up on my TBR list a few notches.  Sweet, sexy, and sassy: my favorite s-words when it comes to reading and being a holiday setting just makes it that much better.

RATING:

Old Acquaintance by Annabelle Jacobs
Summary:
There are two sides to every story, even those buried in the past.

When Sam spots the hot guy moving in next door, he’s all for going round to introduce himself. That soon changes when it turns out his new neighbour is in fact an old school acquaintance, Charles Whitmore. Sam didn’t like him back then, and fifteen years haven’t altered that.

Splitting up from his long-term boyfriend means a move across the city for Charlie. As luck would have it, his immediate neighbour is a guy he went to school with, Sam Gellar. While Sam is less than welcoming, his best mate is more than happy to invite Charlie into their social circle. Whatever problem Sam has with Charlie, Charlie resolves to get to the bottom of it, because, frosty beginnings aside, Charlie likes him.

With Christmas just around the corner, fate thrusts them together, and they get on so much better than they ever did at school. Despite his efforts not to, Sam develops feelings for Charlie, and they appear to be reciprocated. If Sam wants to take things further he needs to either confront Charlie about their past--a past Charlie seems to have forgotten entirely--or let it go and move on. Sam knows deep down that he can’t let it go, but it never seems the right time to bring it up. Until it is.

Annabelle Jacobs has a real winner with Old Acquaintance.  Sam and Charlie are two people you just know will be perfect for each other and yet Sam obviously has bad memories of Charlie from school, unfortunately they are memories told to him by his one-time best friend.  When you spend fifteen years hating on someone it can be hard to let that go and in Sam's case even the idea that his then best friend turned out to be not such a nice guy still makes it difficult to not believe what he's been hanging on to.  Luckily for Sam he has a couple of good mates now that keep him thinking.

Now that's more than I normally would give away but I don't really see it as a spoiler, more of an incentive to read this one for yourself because you don't want to miss this holiday gem.  Miss Jacobs may have set this one during the holiday season but it is so much more than Christmastime, Old Acquaintance is one that should maybe actually be read anytime but the holidays.  Why you ask?  We tend to be more open-hearted during the holidays and once the decorations are put away most of us tend to go back to our pessimistic ways so its nice to be reminded of what makes us optimistic and full of the holiday spirit the other 11 months of the year.  But whenever you read it you will definitely find yourself entertained and who knows maybe you'll even reach out to someone who wasn't on the top of your list a week earlier.

Forever Yours by Annabelle Jacobs
Summary:
Felix has been in love with Leo for fifty years, from the moment Leo bit him and made him a vampire. But Leo gives no indication that he feels anything in return. On the anniversary of their first meeting, maybe things are about to change….

This is part of the Rainbow Advent Calendar 2018.

Fun holiday short about a delightful pair of vampires who despite 50 years of friendship have never revealed the depth of how they feel about each other.  Even vamps deserve holiday magic.

Under the Felt Mistletoe by Nell Iris
Sunday arrives with clear skies and no rain, but instead, the temperature has dropped overnight and hovers in the low thirties. I arm myself with a thermos of coffee and dress accordingly: long johns under my orange bellbottom corduroy pants, a long-sleeved t-shirt and a turtleneck layered under my windbreaker, a fluffy scarf wound around my neck and a beanie that makes my hair look ridiculous. It flattens everything under the hat, but at the ribbed cuff, my curls explode in every direction with a vengeance.

A lot of people attend the first market of the season and despite the cold pluming my breath in front of me, everyone is in high spirits and full of holiday cheer. My neighbor to the right, Mrs. Winterbottom -- yes, that’s her real name -- is dressed as Mrs. Santa and sells magnificent hand-crafted fir wreaths. On my left, Mr. and Mrs. Carruthers sell gold-brushed chocolate pralines that are too pretty to eat and taste even better.

Every vendor plays holiday music, greets the shoppers with a jolly ho-ho-ho, and a comment on the weather. The shoppers, in turn, have deep pockets and are eager to acquire the merchandise. People love my ornaments, and my stuff flies off the table. I will be cleaned out completely before the market closes if this continues. I need to spend more time sewing so I can bring lots more next week.

After a couple hours, huge powdery snowflakes start sailing leisurely from the sky, adding to the holiday feeling. The only downer on this fabulous day is that I ran out of coffee early. Mrs. Winterbottom forgot hers at home, and I shared mine with her. I wouldn’t let my worst enemy go without coffee if I could do something about it.

But in a lull between customers, a savior arrives.

Nelson. Carrying two paper cups in mittened hands.

Warmth flashes in my chest at the sight of him; his shy smile and brown eyes that are warm enough to thaw the thin layer of ice from the pond in the middle of the park where the market is held.

“Hi,” he says, sounding out of breath. “I know you like coffee, but I thought maybe hot chocolate would be nice in this cold?” He holds out of the cups and if we weren’t separated by the table I would show my gratitude by hugging the stuffing out of the man. New acquaintance or not.

“My hero!” I accept the offering, tear off the lid, and inhale. The sweet, slightly bitter aroma makes my mouth water. I take a small sip, but it isn’t too hot to drink so I have some more. I hum in happiness and smile at him. “This is awesome. Thank you so much.”

Nelson’s gaze is glued to my mouth with eyelids heavy and lips parted. “You’ve got ...” He sets down his cup and pulls off his red and white mittens, then he leans forward and swipes the pad of his thumb along my upper lip.

I draw a stuttering breath.

“You had chocolate on your lip,” he rasps, his voice so deliciously rumbly I feel it all the way in my bones. “There. All gone.” He does a final sweep before withdrawing.

I can’t help it; my hand flies to my mouth and I finger my lip as though I’m trying to stop the lingering warmth from evaporating.

“Thank you.” My voice is hoarse. Our eyes lock as he picks up the mittens and put them back on. My breathing grows shallow and the Christmas music cacophony and loud buzz of the market-goers fade into the background. All I see is him. All I hear is his breathing.

“Finn. I ...”

Nic Starr lives in Australia where she tries to squeeze as much into her busy life as possible. Balancing the demands of a corporate career with raising a family and writing can be challenging but she wouldn’t give it up for the world.

Always a reader, the lure of m/m romance was strong and she devoured hundreds of wonderful m/m romance books before eventually realising she had some stories of her own that needed to be told!

When not writing or reading, she loves to spend time with her family–an understanding husband and two beautiful daughters–and is often found indulging in her love of cooking and planning her dream home in the country.

Clare London
Clare took the pen name London from the city where she lives, loves, and writes. A lone, brave female in a frenetic, testosterone-fuelled family home, she juggles her writing with her other day job as an accountant.

She’s written in many genres and across many settings, with award-winning novels and short stories published both online and in print. She says she likes variety in her writing while friends say she’s just fickle, but as long as both theories spawn good fiction, she’s happy. Most of her work features male/male romance and drama with a healthy serving of physical passion, as she enjoys both reading and writing about strong, sympathetic and sexy characters.

Clare currently has several novels sulking at that tricky chapter 3 stage and plenty of other projects in mind . . . she just has to find out where she left them in that frenetic, testosterone-fuelled family home.

She is many things; a mother, a wife, a sister, a writer. She has pretty, pretty boys who she gives them life with words.

She likes it when they do dirty, dirty things...but likes it even more when they fall in love. She used to think having people in her head talking to her was weird, until one day she happened across other writers who told her it was normal.

She’s been writing ever since...

Crystal Lacy
Crystal Lacy lives with her loving family in Hawaii, where it is always either drizzling or sunny and never snows—which is a shame, because she prefers being cold to being damp and hot unless it’s for Very Good Reasons. Kayleigh Sky
So… About me. I’ve never run a marathon or scaled Mt. Everest. I’ve never scuba dived or sky dived. I’ve surfed though. That was fun. I have six tattoos, and I really love ink. I also love all plants. Zinnias are one of my favorite flowers. If you’ve never see a zinnia, look it up. Very pretty. It’s an old-timey plant but super easy to grow. Anyway, the big thing I do is write m/m erotic romance. But as much as I love romance and sex, I really love going deep into the dark with my characters. What are their wounds? How can I peel them raw and drag them into the light? This leads to some fairly dark stories sometimes, but even the dark ones come with humor. I think the contradictions in people are ripe for hilarious scene setups. I need humor and light in my life—otherwise, I go into some pretty dark places myself. I live with only one cat now—I once had thirteen. That was crazy. I take up most of the things I research for my characters—photography, tarot, and jewelry making for example. I even bought a recorder once because Ori from Jesus Kid played one. I love that part of my job. I also love to walk and lift weights. I’m not a big fan of yoga—just throwing that out there. So far, all of my characters embody something of me, and all of my characters have given me something of them. But no matter what the struggle is from book to book, love always wins out. I'm strong on plot, strong on character, stronger on love. You can count on happily ever after from me every time. I write my stories to open hearts and uplift spirits. Love matters. It counts. And it's for everyone.

Peace.

Nell Iris
Nell Iris is a romantic at heart who believes everyone deserves a happy ending. She’s a bona fide bookworm (learned to read long before she started school), wouldn’t dream of going anywhere without something to read (not even the ladies room), loves music (and singing along but let’s face it, she’s not Celine Dion), and is a real Star Trek nerd (Make it so). She loves words, poetry, wine, and Sudoku, and absolutely adores elephants!

Nell believes passionately in equality for all regardless of race, gender or sexuality, and wants to make the world a better, less hateful, place.

Nell is a 40-something bisexual Swedish woman, married to the love of her life, and a proud mama of a grown daughter. She left the Scandinavian cold and darkness for warmer and sunnier Malaysia a few years ago, where she spends her days writing, surfing the Internet, enjoying the heat, and eating good food. One day she decided to chase her life long dream of being a writer, sat down in front of her laptop, and wrote a story about two men falling in love.

Nell Iris writes gay romance, prefers sweet over angsty, and wants to write diverse and different characters.

George Loveland
George was about eighteen when he told his friend that he was going to be a writer. It took him another eighteen years before he finally did anything about it and wrote his first short story. A typical Englishman, he drinks buckets of tea with milk—but no sugar, because he is sweet enough. His Nan told him so.

George lives just outside of London, but close enough to enjoy Soho and the West End, where you will find him in a bar with a pint, in a club dancing into the early hours of the morning, or enjoying a musical in the theater; but more than likely he will be in a coffee shop reading a book or writing a new story. Currently single, but taking applications for future husband position, George enjoys crafting romantic stories in which he hopes that one day, life will imitate art.

VL Locey
V.L. Locey loves worn jeans, yoga, belly laughs, reading and writing lusty tales, Greek mythology, the New York Rangers, comic books, and coffee. (Not necessarily in that order.) She shares her life with her husband, her daughter, two dogs, two cats, a flock of assorted domestic fowl, and three Jersey steers.

When not writing spicy romances, she enjoys spending her day with her menagerie in the rolling hills of Pennsylvania with a cup of fresh java in hand. She can also be found online on Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest, and GoodReads.

Annabelle Jacobs
Annabelle Jacobs lives in the South West of England with three rowdy children, and two cats. An avid reader of fantasy herself for many years, Annabelle now spends her days writing her own stories. They're usually either fantasy or paranormal fiction, because she loves building worlds filled with magical creatures, and creating stories full of action and adventure. Her characters may have a tough time of it—fighting enemies and adversity—but they always find love in the end.
