Such a Dance by Kate McMurray

Summary:
When a vaudeville dancer meets a sexy mobster in a speakeasy for men, the sparks fly, the gin flows, the jazz sizzles—and the heat is on…

New York City, 1927.

Eddie Cotton is a talented song-and-dance man with a sassy sidekick, a crowd-pleasing act, and a promising future on Broadway. What he doesn’t have is someone to love. Being gay in an era of prohibition and police raids, Eddie doesn’t have many opportunities to meet men like himself—until he discovers a hot new jazz club for gentlemen of a certain bent...and sets eyes on the most seductive, and dangerous, man he’s ever seen.

Lane Carillo is a handsome young Sicilian who looks like Valentino—and works for the Mob. He’s never hidden his sexuality from his boss, which is why he was chosen to run a private night club for men. When Lane spots Eddie at the bar, it’s lust at first sight. Soon, the unlikely pair are falling hard and fast—in love. But when their whirlwind romance starts raising eyebrows all across town, Lane and Eddie have to decide if their relationship is doomed…or something special worth fighting for.

The Roaring 20s and Prohibition is a particular favorite era of my love of history so to find a romance that stayed true to the times in the M/M genre really hit all my buttons.  I really enjoy the connection between the big tough Mob guy Lane and the song-and-dance Eddie.  Lane may be a bit of a romantic at heart looking for that one special guy but he is certainly no pushover.  Eddie on the other hand may want fun but he's not looking for love.  The passion between these two definitely burn up the pages(or short-circuit your ereader) but it's not easy and you might be surprised just where or who the potholes in their journey come from.  For me, what really cemented the era was the secondary characters, from Eddie's partner to Lane's boss, the good and the bad, they all help the story and the main characters evolve without overshadowing the love story.  Such a Dance is simply put, an all around. completely satisifying read and great addition to my historical shelf.

RATING:

Eddie took a cautious step forward and was immediately pulled into a room full of hot air and cool tempers. Everything was draped in red velvet and blue fabric. Men around him danced and sang and cavorted. It was everything he expected and nothing like he could have anticipated.

He pulled down the brim of his fedora, took a look around, and tried to get a handle on the situation. Did anyone recognize him? It didn’t seem so; his arrival was unheralded and no one so much as spared him a glance. Was there anyone he recognized? Not for certain. A few faces seemed vaguely familiar, like they might have been stagehands or people he worked with at the theater. No one whose name he could recall. Did anyone there catch his eye? Wasn’t that the bigger question?

There was one man, sitting by himself at a table in the corner, smoking a cigarette. He seemed to be surveying the room as well. He occasionally put the cigarette in an ashtray and picked up a highball glass full of God knew what and took a slow sip. He was remarkably handsome, that was what Eddie noticed, with a shock of black hair on top of his head, dark eyes, and a shadow of stubble along his chin. He was athletic-looking, too; thin, but with broad shoulders. He had olive skin, like maybe he was Italian or Greek. He was a sheik, Eddie thought, like Valentino.

Eddie found himself drawn to this stranger for reasons he couldn’t articulate beyond that he liked the man’s face, liked his masculine carriage, liked the way everything around him seemed to spell man—and he wanted to keep looking at that face for a while, wanted to see what the man’s hair would feel like under his fingers, wanted to know what it would be like to kiss and taste this man.

Which of course was impossible. Or was it? There was not a single woman in this club. Eddie suspected that if he hadn’t known the password, he never would have been admitted. But this man was seated alone at a table. Maybe his date had gone to the men’s room. Maybe he was only there to look.

The man looked up and made eye contact with Eddie. He crooked his finger. Come here, he beckoned.

So Eddie went.

The man kicked out the other chair at his table. “Have a seat,” he said.

“Hello,” said Eddie as he slowly sat.

The man took a drag on his cigarette and squinted at Eddie. “Do I know you from somewhere?”

Eddie considered asking if the man had ever been to the Doozies, but then the man would know for sure who he was. And Eddie was certain he had not met this man face-to-face before. This was someone he would have remembered. “I don’t think so.”

The man put his cigarette on the ashtray and took a sip of his drink. “You look a little lost.”

“I’m not.”

“You were looking at me.” The man picked the cigarette back up and took a long drag. The action drew a lot of attention to the man’s mouth, his thin but soft-looking lips, and Eddie couldn’t stop himself from continuing to look.

He blinked. He couldn’t figure this man out. Was he dressing down Eddie? Did he really recognize him? Was he a mobster who would take offense at Eddie looking? “You’re nice to look at,” he said with no small measure of defiance in his voice.

He braced himself for the impact of the man’s retaliation—for Eddie then recognized the small circular pin on the man’s lapel as marking him as a member of some kind of Mob organization—but the man laughed. “Well, thank you,” he said, still chuckling. “Are you sure we’ve never met? You look terribly familiar.”

“I’m sure.”

The man smothered the stub of his cigarette in the ashtray. He extracted a slim silver case from his pocket, opened it, and displayed a neat row of cigarettes. “You want?”

Eddie shook his head.

The man shrugged and selected one. He slid the case back into his pocket and picked up a matchbook from the table. He looked right at Eddie as he lit the cigarette. Then, as casually as Eddie had seen anyone do anything, he shook the flame off the match and said, “We don’t get many celebrities in here, Mr. Cotton.”

Author Bios:
Lyssa Layne
Lyssa Layne is first, and foremost, the proud momma to her precious daughter, AR. In addition to working full-time and being a mommy to AR, she is also an avid St. Louis Cardinals fan, a runner, blogger, and an infertility survivor.

Having watched one too many medical dramas and being inspired by author Rachelle Ayala, who introduced her to the world of indie writing, Lyssa decided to try her hand at writing a romance story. Her attempt turned into the Burning Lovesick series. You can find Lyssa's own interests throughout her stories although all stories are fictional.

Deb Julienne
USA Today and Amazon Bestselling Author Deb Julienne is the author of multiple novels and anthologies.

While some say truth is stranger than fiction, her experiences run more along the lines of a slap-stick comedy. She makes her own Limoncello...enough said.

After the day job, she loves to play in the yard, with her grandkids, and in the kitchen concocting award-winning jams, jellies, preserves, and sauces (with alcohol of course).

Born and raised in San Jose, California, she now resides in her own little bit of heaven in the Sierra Tahoe National Forest Basin, with her husband of 35 years, their three sons and one daughter, and four very precious grandkids, and a menagerie of animals: 2 horses, 5 goats and 3 sheep.

KS Thomas
Dog Lover who likes her pastries full of cream and sugar….oh…and I write some ;-)

Aside from being an author, I am also a mom to a beautiful 5 year old little girl. I tell everyone I named her after my great-grandmother (because that’s the mature answer), but really, I named her after my favorite princess – just so happens I got lucky and they had the same name…If I wasn’t a writer, I would work on a horse ranch – I’m an animal lover (in addition to dogs, horses are at the top of my list). I wear flip-flops pretty much everywhere I go. I would rather stay awake until 5 am than get up at 5 am (years of bar tending have left their mark), if I can, I’m going to the beach AND I will always be nice to people who bring me chocolate…or coffee…if you bring me both, I’ll probably love you forever.

A gypsy at heart, I write the way I live, following the story wherever it may lead, always ready to start the next one. This is clearly reflected in my body of work which to date includes everything from Children’s Lit to Thrillers.

Jude Ouvrard
"Drama, true love, tattoos...and everything in between!"

Jude Ouvrard is an author who writes from the heart, and reads with passion and devotion. Jude enjoys stories of drama, true love, tattoos, and everything in between. While writing is her therapy, reading is her solace. Life doesn't get better than books and chocolate, and maybe a little bit of shopping.

A romance lover, Jude writes about love, pain, heartbreak and matters that will challenge your heart. A book can tell an unexpected story, no matter which directions it takes. Jude embraces words that have haunted her for years.

Jude is a working mom who dedicates her time to a law firm and writing books. She has an energetic five-year old superhero son, and a supportive boyfriend of thirteen years. Her family is her rock; she could not survive without them. Born a country girl, she transformed into a city woman who now lives in Montreal, Canada. Although French is her first language, Jude decided to write in English because she liked the challenge.

RaeAnn Hadley
RaeAnne Hadley I'm an accidental author as I began writing my first story, Mechanics of Murder, after I had been fired for taking maternity leave. I took a 3rd shift job and trying to keep myself awake, I used my imagination and started creating a story of a female mechanic, which I was, finding a dead body underneath the truck she was working on. My father absolutely loved the story and encouraged me to complete it and get it published. I was almost finished with the first draft when my father had a stroke. Encouraging him to get better, I rushed the book to Lulu Publishing without it being edited. My father was able to hold my first novel but was never able to read it, he passed away 2 days later. But it began a passion for me that has not dwindled!

I have continued writing and my list has now grown. With Love; Now & Forever and Shadows, both paranormal romances though with different personalities and twists. The sequel to Mechanics of Murder, A Wrench in the Plan, was completed in January of 2011 and was released in the spring of 2012.I know my Dad would be proud. My contemporary romance, Love's Everlasting Song, is a sweet tale where hopes, dreams and occasionally fairy tales do come true.

I usually have 5-7 novels in the works and plan on writing for many more years! My stories are not sexually graphic because I believe each readers experience and imagination are usually more erotic and more sensual than what I will put into words and I ALWAYS have to have a happy ending! Life is meant to be fun, enjoy the journey!!!

D'Ann Lindun
Falling in love with romance novels the summer before sixth grade, D’Ann Lindun never thought about writing one until many years later when she took a how-to class at her local college. She was hooked! She began writing and never looked back. Romance appeals to her because there's just something so satisfying about writing a book guaranteed to have a happy ending.

D’Ann’s particular favorites usually feature cowboys and the women who love them. This is probably because she draws inspiration from the area where she lives, Western Colorado, her husband of twenty-nine years and their daughter. Composites of their small farm, herd of horses, five Australian shepherds, a Queensland heeler, two ducks and cats of every shape and color often show up in her stories!

Melissa Keir
Melissa Keir has always wanted to be an author when she wasn’t hoping for a career as a race car driver. Her love of books was instilled by her mother and grandparents who were avid readers. She’d often sneak books away from them so that she could fantasize about those strong alpha males and plucky heroines. In middle school and high school, Melissa used to write sappy love poems and shared them with her friends and still has those poems today! In college her writing changed to sarcastic musings on life as well as poems with a modern twist on fairy tales and won awards for her writing. You can find many of these musings along with her latest releases on her website and blog.

As a writer, Melissa likes to keep current on topics of interest in the world of writing. She's a member of the Romance Writers of America and Electronic Publishing Indusry Coalition(EPIC) and is always interested in improving her writing through classes and seminars. Her current projects include her short story "Forever Love" published in the Valentine Anthology, Love, Again, avialable in print and ebook, as well as two books--Second Time's the Charm and Protecting His Wolfe- published through Rebel Ink Press this year.

Melissa doesn't believe in down time. She's always keeping busy. Melissa is a wife and mother, an elementary school teacher, a book reviewer, an editor for a publishing company as well as an author. Her home blends two families and is a lot like the Brady Bunch, without Alice- a large grocery bill, tons of dirty dishes and a mound of laundry. She loves to write stories that feature happy endings and is often seen plotting her next story.

Frederick who?
Galilea clasped my wrists with a firm grip, and I did the same to hers. I eased over the edge of the entrance, and she helped me slide down the square hole. I gave her a wary look as she lowered me.
“Don’t drop me,” I said.

“Don’t worry. I’ve got you.”

I tightened my grip on her wrists as I reached eyelevel with what must’ve been the frame to the square door. My stomach tensed. I glimpsed up at Galilea as I sunk deeper into the dark hole. I felt a pair of hands wrap around my ankles and pull. I gasped.

“Got ‘er,” a male voice said.

Galilea released her grip. I plummeted down, letting out a screamed as I fell through the air. I thought I’d hit the floor, but a pair of arms caught me before I did.

“It’s okay. It’s okay,” the faceless voice said, setting me down. “I’m here to help.”

Was this who the whistles had come from earlier? It had to be. No one else was here—at least no one else I could see, because all I could see was pitch-blackness.

“I’ll be right down,” Galilea’s voice came from above. “Step aside.”

An invisible hand grabbed my arm and guided me several steps back. Seconds later, I heard the bang of metal colliding with metal, and then I perceived an unseen thump landing near me.

“You guys okay?” Galilea asked.

“We’re good,” the male voice answered before I could. A bright light came to life in the middle of the gloom. Holding the handheld lamp was a young man with slanted eyes. Or maybe the lamp’s bright glare was making him squint, like I was. An enviable set of cheekbones rose high on his face as he said, “Welcome to Sub Terra, ladies.”

Galilea stepped forward and hugged him. He kissed her cheek and lingered there for a bit until Galilea broke their embrace. There was a bashful look on Galilea’s face as she gave me a side glance, but immediately turned her eyes back to the long-haired man. After a moment of watching them stare at each other, I cleared my throat.

“Oh. Right.” Galilea turned to me. “Isis, this is Frederick. He’s our guide.”

Frederick. Why did the name sound familiar?

“You’re an underground guide?” I asked him.

“Of sorts,” Frederick said. He extended his hand, and I shook it. “Let’s not waste time. Galilea’s told me how impatient you can be. Follow me, please.”

What else had she told this guy about me? I glared at Galilea, though I doubted she could see my face.
Frederick walked into the gloom. Galilea and I followed close behind. I couldn’t see much beyond the two feet the light in his hand illuminated. It looked like the walls in the tunnel were nothing but dirt. What were the chances of it caving in on us?

“I assume it’s okay for me to talk now?” I asked Galilea.

“If you must,” Galilea said.

“Why are we underground?”

“It’s safer than walking above ground. Down here,” Galilea explained, “it’s like you’ve been wiped off the face of the Earth. Best part is I can rest my block and build up my strength for unexpected surprises.”

“And why are you telling me this until now?” I tripped over a rock and Galilea caught my arm. “We could’ve been hiding down here this whole time.”

“Surrounded by dirt and earthworms?” She laughed. “No thanks.”

“Drastic times call for drastic measures,” I said. “I’m sure you’ve heard it before.”

“Yeah, well, it’s not as simple as you think. Frederick is risking his life by doing this for us. Plus, I had a complication arise.”

Frederick stopped and turned to face us. He lifted the lamp to Galilea’s face. “By complication, you’re referring to the gargantuan idiot ex-boyfriend and not me, right?”

“I wasn’t talking about either of you. Frederick, you’re much too insecure,” Galilea told him.

“I wouldn’t call myself insecure. Jealous, maybe.” Frederick turned around and walked ahead. We quickened our pace to catch up to him and walked in silence.
