Book Blitz: The Viking's Chosen by Quinn Loftis

Title: The Viking's Chosen
Author: Quinn Loftis
Series: Clan Hakon Series #1
Genre: Historical, Young Adult, Romance
Release Date: February 12, 2018
Publisher: Clean Teen Publishing
Summary:
His orders are clear: launch a raid against England and bring home the spoils of war. But the prophecy is also clear: General Torben will take a foreign bride—one who is a seer and healer just like his mother. The eldest princess of England is said to be just that…a beautiful, charming, and headstrong woman. But he’s a Viking army general and she’s an English princess—and one who is already promised to the king of Tara.

Two worlds collide in this epic historical fiction centered on an undeniable chemistry that smolders against the odds. Richly written and injected with moments of humor, this action-packed romantic tale will leave you breathless.

Quinn Loftis is the author of twenty novels, including the USA Today Bestseller Fate and Fury.

“At least he does not resemble the back end of a boar,” Dayna whispered.

I shot my sister a quick nod of agreement and then covertly turned back to peer at my future husband who was currently conversing with my father. After our morning ride, my sister and I had found a hiding spot behind some large drapes just to the left of the room occupied by our guests. It afforded us the surreptitious ability to listen and watch with the two kings interact. Thomas had taken his leave, but not before he informed me of what he thought about our childish behavior. I did not care if I was being childish. I was not ready to meet King Cathal just yet, at least not without a little advance warning of what I would be dealing with.

“You are correct,” I murmured back. “He is not ugly, but his handsomeness is marred by that tight lipped frown. He looks cruel.”

I had been surprised to find that my future husband was not nearly as old as I had thought he would be. If I had to guess, I would put him at eight and thirty, or, at the very oldest, two and forty. His hair was dark, cut close to his head. He had deep green eyes, a hawkish nose, and thin lips that seemed to hold a perpetual scowl. Standing at a little over six feet, King Cathal was lean but obviously muscular. Yes, he was handsome, but the cold, detached look in his eyes ruined any favor I might have found in him.

“Do you think it hurts to hold his face like that?” Dayna asked.

I bit my bottom lip to keep from laughing. “Perhaps he was just born that way.”

“Tis a shame to be so handsome and yet such a pompous ass.”

“Shh,” I chastised. “That pompous ass could have your head if he felt your offense warranted it.”

“Father would not allow me to be beheaded, Allete” Dayna assured me. “I am his favorite.”

I made a motion with my hand to quiet her so we could hear what it was our father was saying to the king of Tara.

“She has to know by now that I have arrived,” King Cathal was saying. His words came out clipped and low.

“Allete tends to have her own mind about things. I am sure she will join us when she is ready,” King Albric said, attempting to placate his irritated guest.

“And who allows such independent thinking?” Cathal challenged. “A woman should know her place.” His pointed look was aimed at the queen who stood quietly next to King Albric.

Allete was sure her mother was going to smack the rude man, but a subtle hand placed on her mother’s wrist held her in place.

“I understand your frustration, Cathal, but please be considerate of Allete’s situation. She is being courted by a man she has never met. She will be expected to leave with that man in a month’s time and travel to a place that is not her home, where she has no friends, no family. She deserves time to adjust.” King Albric, ever the diplomat, attempted to ease his counterpart’s temper. Based on Cathal’s pinched lips, however, his efforts were wasted.

“Could you at least send for her?” The other king asked in a more civil tone. And then added, “Please,” all be it a bit begrudgingly.

I snatched Dayna’s sleeve and gave it a gentle tug, indicating it was time for us to go. Like mice being hunted by a cat, we scurried from our hiding place and snuck to my bedchamber. We had barely made it inside when there was a knock at the door.

“Enter,” I said, attempting to keep my voice from sounding breathless.

Lidia entered. The look on her face was one of trepidation.

“The king requests your presence,” my handmaiden said in a soft voice.

I smiled at the girl. “Chin up, Lidia. All will be well.”

Lidia let out a huff, her manners momentarily forgotten. “You have not met the man. He is positively awful.” Her hand flew to her mouth and her eyes widened. “Forgive my frankness.”

Dayna laughed. “Allete would never punish you, especially not for telling the truth.” She lowered her voice conspiratorially. “We already saw him. We spied on them.” Dayna winked, looking completely unrepentant.

Lidia lowered her hand and made an ‘O’ shape with her mouth.

I straightened my dress and pulled my shoulders back. “Might as well face the music. I doubt he is going to turn around and sail back home without me.”

July Thunder by Shannon A Thompson

Title: July Thunder
Author: Shannon A Thompson
Series: Bad Bloods: July #1(Bad Bloods #3)
Genre: Young Adult Fantasy
Release Date: April 10, 2017
Summary:
From best-selling author Shannon A. Thompson comes an exciting new duology in the Bad Bloods universe.

Fourteen-year-old Violet has been called many things: a bad blood, a survivor, an immortal…now she has a new name—citizen. But adjusting to a lawful life is not easy, especially when she must live under the rule of the same officers who justified the killings of her flock only eight months earlier.

Segregation of bad bloods and humans is still in effect, and rebellious Violet steps into a school where she is not allowed. When the police get involved, things deteriorate quickly, sparking a new revolution at the wall separating the Highlands from the outskirts.

That’s when Caleb steps in. He might appear to be an average sixteen-year-old bad blood, but he has secrets, and Violet is determined to figure them out. Caleb knows who’s attacking the wall and why, but his true identity remains a mystery—and how he relates to Violet could shake the threatened city to its very core.

Together or not, a storm will form, a rally will start, and shocking truths will be revealed.

“Play for me,” Kuthun asked. When I faced him, he spread his hands out with a million strings drawn in between.

It was an instrument he made—one meant only for me—and I played it like a laid-down harp.

A million times I had attempted to reconstruct the instrument without Kuthun’s powers, but a million times I had failed.

The music could only be found between his abilities and mine, and that was how I knew I was like him, even when the world didn’t see it that way.

I was a bad blood at heart, but all Vendona saw was a person with bad blood and no powers to show for it.

On my third sixteenth birthday, I had cried over it. I had wished to be born like them, and Kuthun had slapped me.

“You are human, and you are still great,” he’d said then, and even now, he repeated it, “Music is your gift.”

Notes floated between our unspoken thoughts, and he listened to every single one. In it, I played the raging sea, the sparkling glass castle, and the heated empty beach. Last, I played how I heard Violet laugh for the first time.

When Kuthun tilted his head at the notes, I asked, “What else have you learned?”

“That the fish aren’t hungry today,” he joked as the music ended.

His strings broke apart, and, like silver glitter, they fluttered into the sand and disappeared. With one kick, Kuthun buried it all.

Top Ten Bad Bloods You’ll Meet In The New Duology
If you’ve read the first duology in the Bad Bloods universe, then you already know how crazy, wild, and wonderful a bad blood can be. (Book 1 is free across all platforms right now.) But if you don’t know what a bad blood is, a bad blood is a person with hindering abilities. Think X-Men, but the powers come with serious ramifications. Want an example? In the latest duology, Violet is a fourteen-year-old girl who can turn into a shadow…but she often loses herself to darkness and time, so she struggles to form back into a person. Because of her shadowy nature, she also has a hard time identifying as individual rather than simply following anyone she latches onto…like a shadow.
Here are the top ten bad bloods you’ll meet for the first time in the new Bad Bloods duology, July Thunder and July Lightning. Check out the Pinterest board for more inspiration!

  • Levi (13): He’s described as a seedy sailor, with curly blond hair and skin that…glows. He might be closer to an eel. And his powers include cleaning water.
  • Kuthun (18): A love interest in the book, Kuthun sees the strings of fate…even the strings of those who have died long ago.
  • Kat (15): Between her night vision, her sharpened claws, and her black-white-red hair, Kat might as well be a calico cat. Even cats mistook her and sheltered her from a young age.
  • Skeleton (15): Skeleton works in the Pits, an underground fighting ring, but his name should be taken literally. He’s slowly defying all science by turning into a skeleton…and remaining alive.
  • Nuo (17): Nuo grew up with our protagonist Caleb, but her powers can make you repeat, repeat, repeat until whatever action you’re doing kills you.
  • Hanna (16): She might be bald, but she can grow anyone else’s hair. And dye it, too.
  • Ellen (9): She glows like a lighthouse, but after burning her own eyes, she cannot see the night she turns into day.
  • Plato (7): Plato might have a glass heart…because he can turn sand into glass right before your eyes.
  • Yasir (15): Do you like jewels? This is your guy. He can change anything into a gem…including his own eye, which is now a sapphire.
  • Britney (8?): Her age is a mystery for a reason. Her powers, too. Revealing either could kill us all.

Frederick who?
Galilea clasped my wrists with a firm grip, and I did the same to hers. I eased over the edge of the entrance, and she helped me slide down the square hole. I gave her a wary look as she lowered me.
“Don’t drop me,” I said.

“Don’t worry. I’ve got you.”

I tightened my grip on her wrists as I reached eyelevel with what must’ve been the frame to the square door. My stomach tensed. I glimpsed up at Galilea as I sunk deeper into the dark hole. I felt a pair of hands wrap around my ankles and pull. I gasped.

“Got ‘er,” a male voice said.

Galilea released her grip. I plummeted down, letting out a screamed as I fell through the air. I thought I’d hit the floor, but a pair of arms caught me before I did.

“It’s okay. It’s okay,” the faceless voice said, setting me down. “I’m here to help.”

Was this who the whistles had come from earlier? It had to be. No one else was here—at least no one else I could see, because all I could see was pitch-blackness.

“I’ll be right down,” Galilea’s voice came from above. “Step aside.”

An invisible hand grabbed my arm and guided me several steps back. Seconds later, I heard the bang of metal colliding with metal, and then I perceived an unseen thump landing near me.

“You guys okay?” Galilea asked.

“We’re good,” the male voice answered before I could. A bright light came to life in the middle of the gloom. Holding the handheld lamp was a young man with slanted eyes. Or maybe the lamp’s bright glare was making him squint, like I was. An enviable set of cheekbones rose high on his face as he said, “Welcome to Sub Terra, ladies.”

Galilea stepped forward and hugged him. He kissed her cheek and lingered there for a bit until Galilea broke their embrace. There was a bashful look on Galilea’s face as she gave me a side glance, but immediately turned her eyes back to the long-haired man. After a moment of watching them stare at each other, I cleared my throat.

“Oh. Right.” Galilea turned to me. “Isis, this is Frederick. He’s our guide.”

Frederick. Why did the name sound familiar?

“You’re an underground guide?” I asked him.

“Of sorts,” Frederick said. He extended his hand, and I shook it. “Let’s not waste time. Galilea’s told me how impatient you can be. Follow me, please.”

What else had she told this guy about me? I glared at Galilea, though I doubted she could see my face.
Frederick walked into the gloom. Galilea and I followed close behind. I couldn’t see much beyond the two feet the light in his hand illuminated. It looked like the walls in the tunnel were nothing but dirt. What were the chances of it caving in on us?

“I assume it’s okay for me to talk now?” I asked Galilea.

“If you must,” Galilea said.

“Why are we underground?”

“It’s safer than walking above ground. Down here,” Galilea explained, “it’s like you’ve been wiped off the face of the Earth. Best part is I can rest my block and build up my strength for unexpected surprises.”

“And why are you telling me this until now?” I tripped over a rock and Galilea caught my arm. “We could’ve been hiding down here this whole time.”

“Surrounded by dirt and earthworms?” She laughed. “No thanks.”

“Drastic times call for drastic measures,” I said. “I’m sure you’ve heard it before.”

“Yeah, well, it’s not as simple as you think. Frederick is risking his life by doing this for us. Plus, I had a complication arise.”

Frederick stopped and turned to face us. He lifted the lamp to Galilea’s face. “By complication, you’re referring to the gargantuan idiot ex-boyfriend and not me, right?”

“I wasn’t talking about either of you. Frederick, you’re much too insecure,” Galilea told him.

“I wouldn’t call myself insecure. Jealous, maybe.” Frederick turned around and walked ahead. We quickened our pace to catch up to him and walked in silence.

Devon Drake, Cornerback by Jean C Joachim

Title: Devon Drake, Cornerback
Author: Jean C Joachim
Series: First & Ten #4
Genre: Sports Romance
Release Date: August 24, 2015
Publisher: Secret Cravings Publishing
Cover Artist: Dawne Dominique
Summary:
Devon Drake, star cornerback, has it all: hot super model girlfriend and pro football career, or does he? A childhood friend wanders back into his life, upsetting his ideal existence. Is it finally time to tell her the truth about what happened fifteen years ago?

Stormy Gregory is on the run from an abusive man. Her best friend offers her a safe place at the shelter for abused women and children. Grateful to be out of harm’s way, Stormy helps with a charitable event, not expecting to run into Devon Drake, her friend’s brother. Will she run again rather than face rejection?

Cracks in his perfect world threaten the cornerback’s starting lineup status. An unwelcome surprise short-circuits Stormy’s attempt to build a new life. Can they pull together or will the secret that separates the former friends keep them on a downward spiral?

But the last thing Stormy wanted was to hang around Devon Drake any longer than necessary. He had filled out since high school with pure muscle. Like Chutes and Ladders, Devon Drake had taken the big ladder from handsome to gorgeous. Hanging around might mean the revival of old feelings, leaving her vulnerable to rejection again. It was destined to happen, since he had a hot, high-powered girlfriend. Stormy needed to watch her step. He wasn’t available, but nobody had told her heart that.

He sat up, his gaze glued to her. She hummed the tune “The Stripper” as she unzipped and peeled off her jacket. The man slid his chair closer to the window. She began to dance slowly. Out of the corner of her eye, she could see people on the sidewalk had stopped moving. She took a deep breath and eased her sweater up as slowly as possible.

Now, the man in the headphones was gesturing and talking. The others in the room turned to stare. Stormy kept humming and dancing. She was getting into it. Ignoring the cold, she pulled her sweater over her head, twirled it around, and flung it at a man standing nearby. He caught it and applauded.

Devon Drake - Devon Drake spent his childhood running, playing and hanging with his little sister, Samantha, and her friend, Stormy. When he hit junior high, football became his passion and he moved on from his young, adoring female friends.

With hard work and determination, Devon became a star. Always the fastest runner on any team, he chose to become a cornerback. His huge high school success led to an offer, after college, from the pro team, the St. Louis Sidewinders.

In St. Louis, he earned the reputation as a “shut down cornerback” – the guy who could out run, out-perform any wide receiver.

He opted to join The Connecticut Kings. At a charity event, he met Jackie Lawrence, a super model. They dated, much to Devon’s surprise. A humble young man, he never quite saw what she saw in him. But super models don’t achieve success hanging on the arm of attractive football players. So Devon had to content himself with a long distance relationship.

Fifteen years after his last encounter with Stormy Gregory, they meet again. Devon knows his behavior to her at their last meeting had been atrocious. Maybe now he could make amends.

His former childhood friend had turned into a beautiful young woman who was fleeing an abusive man. Devon’s heart was touched. Could he make it up to her for the bad way he had behaved? Devon Drake discovers that old feelings don’t die. Can he convince Stormy he’s sincere? And what about Jackie? Read Devon Drake, Cornerback, book 4 in the First & Ten series and find out.

Stormy Gregory - Life hadn’t been easy for Stormy Gregory. The fighting between her parents drove her to seek the friendship of the two kids down the block, Samantha and Devon Drake.

Stormy continued her friendship with Devon and became Samantha’s shadow in high school. Until he broke her heart. They went their separate ways.

After getting her degree in nutrition, Stormy found a job far from home in Bolton, Illinois. She worked part-time in two senior centers, planning meals. She found success and friendship there with the older crowd, and a little romance with the director.

An old acquaintance from high school looked her up, seeking help finding a job and a new start. She did what she could, but resisted his advances. He became hostile, then violent, forcing her to flee.

Not knowing where to turn, Stormy contacted her old friend, Samantha Drake. Sam made space for her friend in the shelter where she volunteered. During an event, she bumped into Devon Drake.

Stormy hadn’t expected the encounter. It had been fifteen years since she’d seen him. Instead of hating him for past hurts, warm feelings resurfaced. Stormy pushed them down, figuring she couldn’t compete with a super model. Simply being near Devon Drake made her pulse jump. She needed to get away, but the man who had hit her showed up at her door. She had nowhere to go, or did she?

Here are my top ten sports movies of all time, and a few words about each.
1)MIRACLE – This has to be number one because it’s about our amazing ice hockey team that won the gold medal for the U.S. for the first time. And they were a bunch of amateurs (I think) playing against international professionals. If ever there was an inspirational film, this is it. And the HEA is right up my alley.

2) REMEMBER THE TITANS – this is another inspirational film that comes from reality. This is based on a true story of how football bridged the gap between the races and paved the way for new understanding and acceptance. I love the way sports cuts across racial lines and makes friends out of enemies. Something about playing for the same team that negates hatred and promotes team spirit. Loved this movie!

3)RUDY/BRIAN’S SONG (TIE) – two tear jerkers, for different reasons. Rudy is the story of a small guy who refuses to give up his dream of playing football for Notre Dame. Brian’s Song is about the friendship developed on the playing field of two men of different races and how that relationship is tested when one of them comes down with a terminal illness. Break out the tissues for these two.

4) FRIDAY NIGHT LIGHTS – Another football movie giving us insight into the players’ lives. We see how football can affect them for good or for bad. Great movie that doesn’t pull punches when it shows what pressure is put on players when the whole town takes football seriously.

5) HOOSIERS – okay, a basketball movie. Again, this movie is taken from a true story about an inspirational coach and a basketball team that needed work. Gene Hackman is great and you’ll find yourself cheering for the team.

6) INVINCIBLE – Based on a true story, Mark Wahlberg plays an older guy who is convinced he has a shot at making starting lineup for the Philadelphia Eagles. Football when you’re not quite so young can be tough on the body. But Wahlberg’s character is steadfast in his quest. Quite inspirational with a nice love story, too.

7)PRIDE OF THE YANKEES – This is a classic baseball movie with Gary Cooper playing Lou Gehrig, one of the stars of the Yankees. Gehrig had a long, illustrious career until he got sick. This is a moving tribute to a true hero, courageous on the baseball field and facing a battle for his life.

8) THE ROOKIE – This inspirational baseball story has a favorite of mine, Dennis Quaid, playing an older player desperate to make the major leagues. Loved it. You root for him all the way.

9)INVICTUS - – Another movie that mixes racial problems with sports. Rugby comes to South Africa. Brilliantly written, acted and shot, this movie will keep you riveted and leave you with a good feeling inside when it’s over.

10) THE LONGEST YARD – This was just a fun movie with the gorgeous, young, sexy Burt Reynolds creating a football team in prison that has to play against the guards. It’s fun, gritty and sexy.

The Devil of Kilmartin by Laurin Wittig

Title: The Devil of Kilmartin
Author: Laurin Wittig
Series: Kilmartin Glen
Genre: Historical Romance
Release Date: September 2015
Cover Design: Rebecca Poole/dreams2media
Summary:
In the dark of night, Elena of Lamont must flee her home after her father's death to escape the brutal clansman determined to satisfy his lust for power -- and for her. But as the captivating beauty runs from one dangerous man she finds herself landing in the arms of another, one whose passionate embrace offers perils of its own...

As the chief of the Lachlan clan, Symon MacLachlan vows to protect the fiery-haired lass whose gentle touch relieves the demons clawing at his soul. Despite her fierce denials, he is certain Elena is the legendary Lamont healer -- and certain that he must have her for his own. Desperate for her soothing caress -- and unable to quell the desire burning inside him -- Symon is compelled to lure Elena into marriage. But will he be able to win the love of the tender enchantress who has stolen his heart?

Symon woke slowly to the sound of a steady rain dripping off thatch, the earthy smell of peat smoke, and the hard, cold stone beneath him.
His head throbbed, and every muscle complained of hard use. He opened his eyes slowly and looked about him. Memory rushed in, crowding his aching head with images of a bedraggled lass. A lass who was either daft or foolishly brave. Another memory presented itself, one of ease and balance and a clearing of the cloud afflicting his mind, relief for his suffering body. Aye, he remembered the lass who had stilled the ravages of the madness for a time.
Symon rose, cursing his unsteady legs. The need to touch her again, to feel the clarity and brightness she had caused, had him groping for the door latch. Cloud-softened light stabbed his eyes, increasing the hammer blows inside his skull. He paused, long enough to let his eyes adjust and his legs prove their ability to hold him upright.
At last he raised the latch just as the lass opened the door, brushing dirt from the skirt of her grimy gown. She looked up, saw him, and stopped.
"Good day to you," Symon said.
Elena nodded. Symon took the chance to really look at her here in the light of day. Her hair was flame colored. Not the color of a roaring fire, but the color of glowing embers, shifting and changing in the morning light from deep auburn to glossy brown to burnished gold.
The urge to drag her to him shook him in its intensity, nearly overwhelming his hold on reason. He fought it, disgusted with his own weakness. He was chief of Clan Lachlan, a warrior, born and trained to lead his people. He should be the one providing for others. He should not be some weak-kneed fool looking to this lass for help.
     Yet he had little choice.
Purple-green marks marred her pale skin, telling of someone's hard use. Anger surged in him, tempered with an unusual softness. No one should treat a woman so.
"Did you sleep well?" he asked, needing to break the tension building in the silence. She nodded. Symon looked past the bruises. He was not so ill he did not appreciate her long limbs and narrow build. He could even appreciate the stubborn set of her chin, and the flash of determination that came and went in her eyes. He held his hand out for her to take, but she did not touch him.
She started to back into the dark confines of the cottage, then changed her direction and edged along the rough wall a few steps. Symon moved with her, until she bumped into a stump left there.
"Take my hand," he said, trying to keep the eagerness out of his voice. He needed her to touch him. He needed her to prove his suspicions; to feed his hopes.
The lass looked at him. "I don't wish to take your hand," she said, watching him, wariness etched round her eyes.
The pounding in Symon's head increased as he fought to keep his voice level and his manner mild.      He fought to keep from grabbing her, testing her effect upon him, questioning her true purpose here. He stared into her eyes, commanding her with every thought to take his hand, prove him right. Save his life.
At last she put her hand in his, lightly, barely touching, as if she were afraid to press her skin to his.
Nothing – save the continued hammers inside his skull. No peace, no calm, no ease washing over him, not even the warmth he remembered, for her hands were icy. He had wanted so much more. A tiny hope-harboring part of him he'd thought long dead was disappointed. Abruptly he turned toward the byre, pulling her along behind him.
     "Release me, Devil!"
Symon winced at the familiar epithet that sounded more harsh from her lips than from all the others who had named him so. She hauled back on his hand, nearly upsetting his tenuous balance.
"Where are you taking me? I'll not be dragged along like some animal." She tried to pull her hand free of his grip. "I don't belong to you."
Symon stared at her, then released her abruptly.
"Lass." Auld Morag stood in the doorway, a funny sort of look on her face. "Get your washing up done. I've a fine fat rabbit to help break your fast." She glanced at Symon and cackled, raising the hairs at the back of his neck. "Do not worry over Symon's scowling face. His head is pounding and his mouth's like sand. You know aught of headache cures, do you not?"
Elena's eyes were wide, and Symon could see the rapid rise and fall of her breathing. She was afraid. Auld Morag was a bit off-putting, but surely she had not frightened the lass so much last night.
"I have willow," Auld Morag continued as if Elena had answered her. "Make him a tea to ease his pain. 'Twill benefit us both if we cease the drumming in his head."
The lass said nothing, but shook free of his grasp and made to pass by him.
Symon spun about to follow her and immediately regretted the quick movement. He grabbed her arm to steady himself and closed his eyes for a moment. He could have sworn he felt her reach out and sooth his brow with cool fingers against his sweat-sheened skin, easing his head. But when he opened his eyes the sensation vanished. She had not moved.
