Hands down, the delightful Delilah S. Dawson! She is such an incredible writer. I’ve read almost all of her books and she is so consistently good. I actually worked with her at a local online newspaper but have never met her in person. Her books always have realistic heroines and phenomenal world building, which is what I love about them.
When writing a book, what is your favorite part of the creative process (outline, plot, character names, editing, etc)?
Not outlining or plotting, I can tell you that! I’m a “pantser” kind of writer, which means I’m terrible at organization and awesome at letting my imagination go nuts on the page. I can’t believe I’ve written a single novel writing the way I do, and somehow I’ve written three. Probably my favorite part of the process is sitting at my computer and never knowing what I’m actually going to write. It really does feel like an adventure. I just pick a character to follow around and watch them interact with everyone else. It’s kind of crazy. And I do mean crazy. Editing that is horrendous work!
When reading a book, what genre do you find most interesting/intriguing?
I lean a lot towards fantasy and romance, and I love a good time travel or multiverse. I’d love to write a time travel one day, but it feels a little out of my wheelhouse right now. I really can’t stop reading historical novels and anything with a mythical element to it. Any series by Heather LL FitzGerald or Lisa T. Bergren is a total binge read for me!
If you could co-author with any author, past or present, who would you choose?
That’s tough. Everyone I can think of is so much more skilled than I am, so trying to write at their level would be…embarrassing. But I guess if I had to say someone, it would be Rainbow Rowell because she’s one of the most natural writers I’ve ever read.
Have you always wanted to write or did it come to you "later in life"?
I attempted my first (terrible) novel as a teenager. It’s horrible at best, but it did unleash my love for writing. I remember being so excited to get home after school so I could spend countless hours crafting that story. I would only stop writing when my mom saw my lamp on and took away my notebook in the middle of the night so I’d go to sleep. I was so sleep deprived while writing that book, but it made me so happy!
