Monday's Mystical Magic: Twisted Tome by Vanora Lawless

Summary:

Devastating Magic #2
A stubborn empath. A passionate dreamwalker. A love worth fighting for.

For empathic illusionist Warren 'Sully' Sullivan dreamwalking Captain Elliot Stone is more than the only thing keeping him sane and safe. He's the keeper of Sully's heart, even if he can't seem to admit it out loud.

When an ancient grimoire infused with catastrophic magic comes into play, they've got to do everything in their power to keep it from landing in enemy hands. Unfortunately, that means working closely with a man who once shattered Elliot's heart. Someone he would have done anything for.

As insecurity and fear threaten the fledgling relationship between Elliot and Sully, will the darkness closing in around them bring them closer or tear them apart forever?

Once again I find myself rushed to write the review I really want to. I will say, I was happy to return to this historical fantasy, or perhaps alternative timeline where certain paranormal behavior/elements exist is wordier but more accurate.  I'm always on the lookout for WW1/post-war stories in the LGBTQ genre so even though this is fantasy set in historical setting, Twisted Tome still called to me.

As it was with the first entry, Imperfect Illusions, I found the way those paranormal "powers" were used in the time of war incredibly intriguing. Opening with their use of "cloaking" their presence when faced with the enemy was the perfect way to remind me just how useful those abilities could be in wartime. The way the author continues to blend the two genres together is highly talented and entertaining.

Watching Sully & Elliot's relationship further deepen was heartwarming and realistic but also heart-hurting when they find themselves having to work with the man who left Elliot heartbroken.  Hard to think of "realistic" when dealing with a fantasy/paranormal historical timeline but the author has done such a wonderful job in the world building, you can't help but forget sometimes that it isn't real.  Throw in supporting characters who possess their own "powers" and you have an attention-grabbing read on your hands.  With the introduction of the man from Elliot's past, we also get a glimpse into some backstory which, for me, further heightens my connection to the characters with the added element of personal drama without it slowing the story down.

I believe there is suppose to be a third entry in the Devastating Magic series but as this was originally released 2 years ago, I'm unsure on the release date but I know I'll be checking it out when it arrives.

CHAPTER ONE
May 4, 1918
Belgium
IN THE LAST BREATH of evening light, Elliot shoved Warren into a stable as the sound of boots in fast pursuit echoed outside. Startled horses snorted and stomped in their stalls. Elliot’s heart pounded loud in his ears alongside his heaving breaths. Hay crinkled underfoot, the musty scent of animal and decay heavy in the air.

Warren pressed close, his eyes dark and intent on Elliot’s. He guided Elliot back into a corner, his calloused hands rasping over Elliot’s cheeks, cupping his face. The door burst open, but Warren’s mouth only twitched into an irresistible smirk. Elliot’s gaze darted to it and he wet his own lips.

German soldiers flung open the doors, barking loud orders at each other. Elliot watched over Warren’s shoulder, his chest squeezing tight, fingers tensing over the pistol at his waist. He held his breath as a soldier approached, but the man’s gaze passed over the space they occupied without sign of alarm. Elliot exhaled slowly, trying to be as quiet as possible. Although he trusted Warren’s illusion to conceal sounds, there was no need to test it.

Around them, the noise of the search continued, but Elliot’s attention was recaptured by Warren’s shadowed gaze, full of adrenaline and edged with lust as he tipped his head up, lips parting in invitation.

A jolt of shocked arousal heated Elliot as Warren slid his hardening prick against Elliot’s thigh. He barely held back a groan as he ducked his head to kiss Warren, against his better judgement. The pressure and yield of Warren’s soft mouth was both pleasure and temptation; he couldn’t resist dipping his tongue inside, clutching Warren’s hips and dragging his body closer. This was the worst time, the worst place, and still Elliot couldn’t help himself. Need and desire had him in their implacable grasp, and Elliot had no intention of fighting when it was so much easier to give into the stroke of Warren’s tongue, the gentle pressure of his teeth against Elliot’s bottom lip.

Warren’s breathing hitched, and he rubbed slowly against Elliot’s own trapped, swollen cock. Molten pleasure consumed him. Elliot was half a second away from hauling Warren up to wrap his legs around Elliot’s waist when Warren tore his mouth free with a breathless chuckle.

Elliot’s pulse skyrocketed with delayed alarm, glancing past Warren to find the stable empty save the animals. “Christ,” he muttered.

Warren pressed his face into the curve of Elliot’s neck and shoulder, silent laughter wracking him. “Your face. Your eyes just—” He choked.

Served him right. “Yes, well, forgive me for a moment’s concern when I remembered what we were in the middle of and worried I’d distracted you,” Elliot said dryly. Which set Warren off once more. Elliot’s own amusement was difficult to conceal. “Whenever you’re finished.”

After a moment, Warren sobered and stepped back. “You are distracting, but I made you a promise. I’ll always keep you safe.”

Warmth flooded Elliot, and he had to look away.

“I showed them a quick illusion of us crawling out a window back there,” Warren said, gesturing to the back of the stable behind a big horse, made larger by the darkness. “They all took off around the building to give chase.”

“Come on,” Elliot said, taking Warren’s hand and leading him to the door. “We’d better get out of here while we have the opportunity.”

He didn’t have to ask Warren to conceal them as he cracked it open and checked the street. They’d been through this routine enough over the winter, rescuing key Belgian and French soldiers in occupied territory. They had it down pat.

By now his second in command, Lieutenant Bell—Bellona, as they called her—and the rest of their team would have Caporal Lucien D’aramitz stashed away at the safe house. LFB, a spy network they’d been working closely with, had provided it as a temporary gathering point before they made the return journey to their home base in Fienvillers. Hopefully the place would have hot water so they could finally get clean.

After a tense journey back to their well-concealed motorcycle, then an uneventful drive for which they were both grateful, Elliot and Warren arrived at the location they’d been directed to.

Climbing out of the sidecar, Warren grumbled under his breath, and Elliot tried not to look entertained. Warren still hated riding in one, but he didn’t particularly enjoy driving a motorcycle either. Elliot gave his shoulder a reassuring pat, and in the moonlight caught the roll of Warren’s eyes. He couldn’t keep a smile down.

“You’re lucky I like you,” Warren said, clearly trying for grumpy, but sounding much too fond.

Nodding, Elliot agreed. “I have been blessed.”

“Damn right.”

And because it was dark and no one was outside, Elliot stole a quick kiss before knocking on the door, inhaling the familiar enthralling scent of Warren. A warm surge of affection gathered in his chest, his lips tingling, as he forced a mild expression onto his face.

Bellona opened the door, her expression warm as she greeted them before settling into something serious. “We’ve got an issue we weren’t expecting, I’m afraid. I’m glad you’ve arrived. We only just found out about him ourselves.”

“Who, D’Aramitz? Was anyone injured?” Elliot asked quickly, stepping inside.

“No one was injured, come on. You’ll see.”

They found the team gathered around a man seated on a settee. His dark hair was long, stringy and unwashed, and his French army uniform had certainly seen better days. He looked as if he could use a hot shower, several meals, and a week’s sleep. His face was battered and bruised. Elliot suspected it wasn’t the only place he’d been hit considering how he cradled his ribs.

Kneeling before him was another French soldier Elliot didn’t recognize. His hair was a lighter shade of brown and he was much slimmer. Short too, with a young appearance and big eyes set over an upturned nose and thin mouth.

At their entrance, all heads had turned to Elliot and Warren. Caporal Remonet and Charbonneau, the two French army members of their team, had been talking with Lara Baudin, their LFB agent liaison. Hoffman was standing back from the group, and he nodded to Elliot and Warren.

“Thank goodness,” Lara said with genuine cheer. “We were starting to worry we might need to mount a second rescue. Bell was beside herself.”

Bellona narrowed her gaze at Lara from where she’d stopped beside Remonet. “I was no such thing.”

“Aw, you care about us,” Elliot said, relieved to see everyone in one piece.

“Obviously,” she said, her hands going to her hips.

Warren chuckled, and Bellona’s glare turned on him. He held up his hands in surrender. “Hey, don’t look at me. I know you’re not the panicking type. I’m sure Lara’s exaggerating.”

Bellona flushed and gestured as she made introductions. “Captain Stone, Corporal Sullivan, meet Caporal Lucien D’Aramitz, and Caporal Gabriel Auclair.”

“Pleasure to meet you,” Elliot said. Warren’s gaze darted speculatively between the two men, D’Aramitz sitting and Auclair kneeling, which prompted Elliot to ask. “Weren’t we only expecting one?”

“We were,” Lara agreed, with a tinge of guilt in her expression. “Gabriel—Auclair,” she corrected, “is my cousin. He’s been searching for D’Aramitz for weeks. When your team took up his cause, I alerted him to get here as quickly as he could. I know what you’re going to say, I shouldn’t have compromised your mission, but there’s so much more happening here than your team was let in on.”

Hoffman crossed his arms, stance shifting from relaxed to suspicious. Beside him, Remonet’s eyebrows rose. Elliot couldn’t say he felt different, unease prickling the back of his neck.

“You could not have brought this to our attention before?” Charbonneau asked.

Auclair shot to his feet. “She was forced to make a judgement.” His French accent was strong, and his voice was painfully earnest. “It’s difficult when you have competing loyalty. We try to fight a war for our nations at the same time we fight to save the world from terrible evil.”

“What kind of evil?” Warren asked, sounding skeptical. He’d shifted closer to Elliot, nearly in front of him, as if planning to shield him if it all went sideways.

Auclair and D’Ararmitz shared a look that spoke of years of silent conversation. Auclair’s gaze seemed to linger on the half-healed gash that stretched along D’Aramitz’s right cheekbone. His mouth went tight, and his eyes widened, clearly pleading. D’Aramitz sighed.

“It is a very long story, but to make it less, my family has been guarding a dangerous artifact for centuries. As far as we know, it cannot be destroyed, only contained, and it is our duty to ensure that it is kept so. We have managed through kings and revolutions, and my brothers have done their best through this war, but six weeks ago I lost contact with all of them. Lara was able to get a friend to visit the vineyard to find out why, but her friend vanished.”

“I assume that’s what led you to leave your post?” Elliot asked, guessing, since they hadn’t been told any such thing.

Auclair stepped closer to him, glaring as D’Aramitz grimaced. “What should we have done? Let the world burn in exchange for two soldiers to remain in a never-ending battle?”

“Γ‡a suffit, Gabriel,” D’Aramitz murmured, resting a gloved hand on his forearm. “We found the vineyard untouched, but my entire family gone, along with Gabriel’s. What we guard was gone as well and all that remained in its place was a coded message from one of my brothers. A hint at where to find him.”

“So how’d you get captured, but not him?” Warren asked, tilting his head from D’Aramitz to Auclair.

“I went to search the vineyard while D’Aramitz went to the hidden room only the guards can enter,” Auclair explained, his face pinching with pain. “I was looking for my sister. By the time I return to the main house, he was missing. There were signs of struggle. I didn’t know who had come for him, but he would not go willingly without me.”

D'Aramitz’s lips quirked in a lopsided little smile. “Of course not.”

Auclair nodded as if he’d been repeating the same thing to himself for ages, and hearing D’Aramitz confirm it was an immense relief. “It…” He seemed lost, staring into the middle distance. “It took some time for me to know what to do. Then I went to Lara for help, and she started her contacts working, put me to use on other tasks to occupy me so I didn’t go mad waiting. You cannot blame Lara for giving me this location.”

“What I don’t understand,” Elliot said, “is why on earth we were sent after a deserter in the first place. No offense. If you left your post without a trace, and this thing you guard is supposed to be a secret, I assume?”

“Yes,” D’Aramitz confirmed without hesitation.

“Then why are the French looking so hard for you?”

D’Aramitz scrubbed at his face with both hands, wincing when the movement reopened the scab on his cheek. Auclair dug in his pocket and handed him a clean handkerchief. “I’ve wondered as much since your soldiers took me out of confinement. They must know something, it is the only explanation. And my family’s secret in their hands would be just as damaging as in German ones. It cannot be allowed to…” He struggled with his words, and when he found them, generations of unbearable weight echoed in them. “To be used in this war or any other. Ever. Some magic is lost for good reason.”

Elliot glanced at Warren, who quickly answered his unspoken question. “He’s telling the truth. He’s terrified of it, whatever it is.”

“So should you all be. The Germans attempt for weeks to get information from me about the location, and I gave them only lies. Because no torture would be as horrifying as what the artifact can do in the wrong skilled hands.”

Auclair made a small sad sound as he looked at D’Aramitz, before returning his distressed gaze to Elliot. “Lara told me you have orders to return D’Aramitz to our government, and if you must, I will go as well. But…”

D’Aramitz took over the plea. “But we would do the world more good searching for my brother, to keep that insidious thing the secret it must remain.”

Elliot surveyed his team’s conflicted expressions. They all wanted this war to end, were sick of losing people, wanted to be home with their loved ones. But he knew each and every one of them. Not a single soul on his team would choose to give a government they understood to be often unscrupulous the kind of weapon that would endanger the world.

Except where did that leave them?

“Sullivan, you’re certain?” Elliot asked, thinking on his feet as he rolled out his tight shoulder muscles.

“Yeah, I’m sure. Neither of ’em show any sign of lying. And Auclair’s emotions are particularly loud and clear. I don’t think he could pull off a lie if he tried.” He was so attractive when he was confident and teasing. Even if the person he was teasing wasn’t Elliot.

D’Aramitz chuckled and Auclair huffed. Elliot rubbed the back of his neck, struggling with a course of action. His gut agreed with Warren, but how much could he safely risk to do the right thing?

“We cannot disobey direct orders,” he said, reluctantly. Auclair and D’Aramitz both tensed. Warren, Bellona, and Hoffman all started to protest, but Elliot continued to speak, only elevating his volume to be heard. “That said, we’ll all need rest to recuperate for the return journey. Are there enough rooms upstairs to go around, Lara?”

Confusion flitted across her face, joining disappointment. “Yes?”

“Excellent.” Elliot refocused on Auclair and D’Aramitz. “I trust the two of you will remain here for the night without any need for official supervision, and we’ll head out in the morning. In the meantime, perhaps we could find a first aid kit for D’Aramitz?”

“Unnecessary,” Auclair said, shifting to block anyone from coming close to D’Aramitz. Perhaps unwilling to believe they weren’t a threat. “I am a healer. Very low ability, but I can take care of his injuries.”

“Right, well, see you bright and early then.”

πŸ‘»πŸŽƒ⏳Throwback Thursday's Time Machine⏳πŸŽƒπŸ‘»: Stormhaven by Jordan L Hawk

Summary:
Whyborne & Griffin #3
Mysterious happenings are nothing new to reclusive scholar Percival Endicott Whyborne, but finding one of his colleagues screaming for help in the street is rather unusual. Allan Tambling claims he can’t remember any of the last hour—but someone murdered his uncle, and Allan is covered in blood.

Whyborne’s lover, dashing private detective Griffin Flaherty, agrees to prove Allan’s innocence. But when Allan is deemed insane and locked away in the Stormhaven Lunatic Asylum, Griffin finds himself reliving the horrifying memories of his own ordeal inside a madhouse.

Along with their friend Christine, the two men become drawn deeper and deeper into a dark web of conspiracy, magic, and murder. Their only clue: a missing artifact depicting an unknown god. Who stole the artifact, and why can’t Allan remember what happened? And what is the truth behind the terrible experiments conducted on Stormhaven’s forbidden fourth floor?

It will take all of Whyborne’s sorcery and Griffin’s derring-do to stop the murderers and save Allan. But first, they must survive an even greater challenge: a visit from Griffin’s family.

Stormhaven is the third book in the Whyborne & Griffin series, where magic, mystery, and m/m romance collide with Victorian era America.

Books #1-4(Widdershins, Eidolin, Threshold, Stormhaven, Carousel, Remnant, & Necropolis)
Original Overall Review May 30, 2014:
I'm doing an overall review because each book flows fluently into the next.  Each book is a mystery in itself but the relationships are ongoing and growing so they really need to be read in order, although I did read the short story last and it wasn't really out of place.

The characters are not only well written but easily liked or hated, as the case may be.  As much as I love both Whyborne & Griffin, I really enjoyed Christine.  A woman before her time and smarter than her colleagues, she doesn't hold any punches with anyone and she is the only true friend that both men come to trust and rely on.  As for the hated characters, for me it was pretty consistently Whyborne's father and brother, they are both self-evolved with tunnel vision.  But we can't like everyone in a story.

The mysteries are intriguing and definitely well written.  They do rely heavily on the supernatural or paranormal, which is a plus for me.  It's done so well that for those who aren't necessarily fans of magic I think will still find these stories interesting.  This series is an excellent read anytime but a perfect read for October and Halloween.

RATING:

An array of probes lay on the table in front of it, some of whose use was made obvious by their shape. Bile stung my throat, and I glanced at Griffin, whose empty-eyed gaze had locked on the probes.

If he slipped into a fit now, we’d be caught for sure. I had to get him out of here. “Griffin,” I said, low and urgent. “Hang on. We’re almost there. I know you can do this.”

He swallowed convulsively, then nodded. “Yes. Just…lead the way.”

I did so, trying not to think of him locked in one of those cribs or chairs, let alone receiving shocks from the instruments. I wanted to take him far from here, wrap my arms around him, and shield him from every possible harm. But I couldn’t.

I led him further down the ward, wondering how many men might be confined here. Unlike the first floor ward, these walls weren’t painted a cheerful yellow. Instead, strange, swirling lines and symbols covered the raw plaster. I stopped to look at them, certain I’d seen many of the sigils in the Arcanorum and other occult tomes. A symbol hung above every cell, with sigils and lines twisting out from it, both inside the cell and to tangle with its neighbors.

What the devil was Zeiler doing with these men?

Griffin tugged at my hand. There was no time to gawk, I reminded myself. As we hurried down the ward, I shone my lantern into each cell, hoping for a glimpse of Allan. The wretched patients were little more than huddled shapes, for the most part, with the occasional gleam of eyes. The low moaning grew louder, and I realized it came from a cell halfway down the ward. Through some trick of the ventilation, the scent of the sea strengthened as we approached, drowning out the foulness of human effluvia. The air grew heavy and damp, smelling of salt and rot, dead fish and cold, cold mud.

My footsteps turned sluggish, as if mired in sludge. I needed to keep walking…and yet for some reason I felt compelled to look into the cell. Everything seemed to move very slowly, as if I’d slipped into some strange dream.

My feet came to a halt altogether, and I shone the beam of my lantern on the moaning man. The occupant of the cell crouched with his back to me. Unlike the shabbily-clothed patients I’d seen thus far, he seemed to be naked, his vertebrae strung like stones beneath his skin. Tattoos of strange design covered his arms and part of his back. Had he been a sailor, perhaps? Even one of the cultists?

The moaning fell suddenly silent. When the madman spoke, his cracked voice lilted strangely, like a child half-singing the words of a taunt. “You hear its song.”

My breath caught in my throat. “I d-don’t know what you mean,” I lied.

A low laugh started…then spread to the other cells, until we stood in the midst of a whole ward of laughing, cackling, giggling lunatics. “Don’t you?” the sailor asked. “It sings to you as it sings to us. In our dreams.”

“Whyborne,” Griffin said urgently, but he seemed very far away. On the other side of the world, or at the bottom of a well.

I took a step closer to the cell, fascinated by the tattoos on the sailor’s back. Was it a trick of the light, or had they begun to move?

The lunatic sprang to his feet, slamming into the bars, mere inches from my face. “It sings to you!” he screamed, spittle flying everywhere.

No, not spittle—sea foam. Somehow—I didn’t know how—the ocean had risen into Stormhaven, an inch of water splashing beneath my feet, the scent of the murky depths filling my nose. It wasn’t possible—it would take a cataclysm indeed for the ocean to rise so high, and surely the building would have been swept away. But where did the water come from?

What was happening to me?

“It’s coming!” the madman howled, shaking the bars of his cage. “The dweller in the deep is coming! The god is coming, singing; don’t you hear it, don’t you hear it?”

A hand touched my arm.

Bunny Kisses #4.5
Original Review March 2024:
Bunny Kisses is a very short free read from the author in her Mountain Springs Omegas series.  I don't want to spoil anything as it's so short so I'll just say this: single alpha father meets single omega in a very adorable cute meet via single father's son.  I love a brilliant single dad story as I think there is nothing sexier than a man who cares for children and when Nick steps in to help prevent a bit of a public cry letting Eddie's son, Jacob, help feed the bunnies then it's doubly yummy. Bunny Kisses is a fun, short, entertaining gem of a read that is simply put: lovely!

Fool's Kisses #5
Original Review October 2025:
This year has been super difficult for me to get into books, even series that I love. This has been one of those series but it's the loss of my mother and my dad's worsening health that has put roadblocks in my reading journey not the books themselves.  I wanted to read at least a few new to me stories for my October showcase on paranormal/supernatural/fantasy tales so I chose Fool's Kisses in Lacey Daize's Mountain Springs Omegas series for one of those new reads.  So glad I chose that one, it was exactly what I needed, a fun, fake boyfriends, friends to lovers romance and the mpreg, IMO fits my search for "out there" tales, not in a scary way but just as it is with my viewing choices, "out there" doesn't always have to be about the fear factor.

Fool's Kisses is the 7th Mountain Springs Omegas entry I've read and though I may not read the remaining 5 right now, I look forward to each one more with each new read I do experience. Daniel and Trent are so delightfully fun,  both have loved each other in secret for awhile, afraid to let the other know and ruin the friendship they both treasure.  When a family wedding presents the opportunity for the men to cross that line, even if it's in a fake form, they may finally find the happiness they both have dreamed of all this time.  As these stories are all about the HEA, I think it's pretty obvious where the outcome will lead but the journey getting there is where the fun is and I won't spoil that.

If you've been reading Mountain Springs Omegas, you have an idea of what to expect and will love this story, if you're new to the series, well you'll love it too and if you are new to the mpreg genre, this series is where I dipped my toe in the water and loved it.  Generally, I am a read-in-order kind of gal but as I occasionally need stories for "lesser featured holidays" for my blog, this is one of those series that allowed me to do that.  Each entry is a new pairing, there are the occasional side characters who pop up that were featured stars of previous entries. Reading in order might help you connect to those characters but you don't need to know their journeys to enjoy each new entry.

Gemini Kisses #6
Original Review June 2024:
This is another story in Lacey Daize's Mountain Springs Omegas series and what a delightfully fun summer read that won't take long.  Yes, it's a short novella but also because it sucks you in and before you know it you're swiping the last page.

As you can expect with alpha Evan being a twin there is bound to be some conflict or miscommunications that tend to follow twins around.  You want to shout at Kyle to think about it first before sticking his foot in his mouth but then you remember Evan never mentioned the twin so then you want to shout at Evan for leaving that bit outπŸ˜‰.

Despite a few mix-ups due to lack of knowledge, Gemini Kisses for the Omega is fun and very much rom-comy that will make you chuckle, smile, laugh, and just a pure entertaining short journey.

I chuckled, reached down, and picked up the bunny. I tucked him into my arms and carried him back to the rabbit enclosure at the front of the store. I set him among the other rabbits and stared down at the bunch.

“No more escape attempts, you hear?” I asked the rabbits. “If I catch another of you hopping around the store there will be no treats tonight.”

Satisfied that I was being thoroughly ignored by a bunch of rabbits, I walked back to where I'd been feeding fish.

Bunnies were cute, but I wished the owners didn't feel the need to bring them in every April. Just because kids wanted rabbits for Easter didn't mean they should have anything more than a plushie.

Sadly, I knew that most of the bunnies would end up in a rescue or rehomed quickly once the appeal wore off. The same thing happened every time an animal movie was released. Kids would beg to have the critter, then lose interest a few weeks or months later. Meanwhile the market for that animal would be flooded with those needing new homes.

I finished with the fish and meandered around the store, fronting the shelves and taking note of stock that was running low.

I’d worked in Mountain Springs’ only pet shop since I graduated high school, and was the sole full-time employee. The owners preferred to let me do most of the work as I’d made it clear that I wanted to take over when they decided to retire.

Somehow I still couldn’t convince them to not go all in with the vanity animals though. My only minor win in that regard was a small display of plush animals near the counter so that the little kids wanting something didn’t have to leave empty-handed.

I knew the owners would prefer I sell an expensive animal plus food and enclosures. But I’d rather a smaller sale that kept the pet in mind instead.

I was standing at the register, preparing the order for the week when the bell sounded over the door.

“Welcome to Furever Friends,” I said, barely glancing up. “Is there anything I can help you with?”

“No thank you,” a smooth, masculine, voice responded. “We’re just browsing.”

I turned back to my order form. “Let me know if you need anything.”

“Thank you, we will.”

I flipped through my notes, making sure I hadn’t missed anything that I needed to add to the order.

“Daddy!” a little voice squealed. “Bunnies!”

“You can look, but don’t touch.”

I winced, expecting the impending tantrum. However, several seconds passed without the wails of a child told ‘no.’

I looked up, shifting over a couple steps to see a boy of about two or three with his hands curled into the mesh surrounding the rabbits. His father, a very attractive alpha, kneeled next to him.

“Easter bunny tomorrow?”

The alpha laughed. “No Jacob. A couple weeks.”

“That bunny?” he pointed at one of the rabbits.

The dad stood and ruffled his son’s dark blond hair. “No. The Easter bunny is much bigger.”

“Want bunny!”

The alpha shook his head. “No Jacob. We’re here to get cat food, remember?”

“Kitty wants bunny!” Jacob argued.

The alpha laughed, reached down and picked up his son. “Kitty does not want a bunny. You want a bunny, and are trying to blame it on the cat.”

“Bunny! Want bunny!”

The alpha shifted the boy to one arm, then booped his nose. “Daddy says no. Now let’s go pay for the cat food. I’ll even let you hand the money over, ok?”

“Ok!”

I smiled at how easily the alpha was able to sway the whims of his son. A moment later the father set his shopping bag full of cat food on the counter.

He was shifting to reach for his wallet when Jacob spied the display of plushies, which had a large number of rabbits.

“Want bunny!”

The alpha sat the boy on the counter and looked into his eyes. “Bunnies are a lot of work Jacob.” He looked up at me and smiled. “I bet the nice omega will tell you.”

The smile could have melted me then and there. His blue eyes met mine, and I wanted to grab handfuls of his brown hair and hold him close for a kiss.

Fool's Kisses #5
Chapter 1 - Daniel
“They must let only the sweetest omegas work in candy stores, am I right?” the alpha leered at me, leaning over the counter and slightly into my space.

I put on what I hoped was more a customer service smile than an actual grimace. “I wouldn’t know.”

He walked his fingers across the counter, close enough to my hand to make me want to slap it away, but not touching. “How about you tell me what time you get off work, and we can find out.”

I glanced at the total on the register. “That’ll be twelve seventy-seven please.”

He blinked. “What?”

“Your total: twelve seventy-seven.”

His demeanor changed instantly as he stood and reached for his wallet. “Tch.”

I accepted thirteen dollars, and grabbed the change. “Twenty-three cents is your change, sir.” I then passed him the bag of chocolates. “Please come again soon.”

He snarled and snatched the bag before turning and almost stomping from the shop with a muttered, “Bitch.”

I waited until the door closed behind him before releasing a sigh of relief.

Mount Chocolate had been featured in some online news article listing the best omega-led candy stores in each state. Since its publication we’d seen an increase in business, both good and bad.

Mason loved seeing all the families with children drive out to taste his creations, and had even developed some new treats. Luckily, that was the majority of the clientele increase.

Then there were the other new customers: rude alphas who thought that omega-led meant open to flirting. Most of them said things that sounded like compliments on the surface, but were actually horribly condescending. Phrases such as ‘It’s a good job for a bunch of omegas’ and ‘It’s amazing what omegas can do nowadays,’ were some that I never wanted to hear again.

“You ok?”

I turned to see Mason standing in the arch between the front and the kitchen. I sighed. “Just another alpha who thinks that I owed him my number because he bought some chocolate.”

Mason frowned. “Sorry man.”

I shook my head. “Not your fault. You didn’t know that damned article was coming out.”

“No. But it’s been hardest on you, since Andrew and I tend to be in the back making the chocolates.”

I pulled off my gloves and tossed them in the garbage. “I just wish the damn alphas would leave their damn dicks at the door. Maybe then they could act like civilized people.”

Mason chuckled. “Want me to hire an alpha to be on the counter so that you have more backup? The sales are up enough to justify it.”

I shook my head. “Thanks, I got it. It’ll probably start to die down in a few more weeks.”

“I could get you some fake bonding bite temp tattoos,” Mason teased.

I rolled my eyes. “And scare off the alphas I might actually be interested in?”

Mason frowned. “Last I checked you weren’t even looking, and I don’t remember the last time you talked about hitting up the bars.”

I scowled at him. “So?”

Mason held up his hands. “Hey man, I’m not one to talk, you know how long I was single. Sorry for being insensitive.”

I sighed. “No. I shouldn’t have snapped. I think I’m just sick of pushy alphas thinking that this is a hookup spot rather than a place of business.”

Mason smiled. “I’ve got some deliveries ready to go. How about you take them and I’ll man the counter.”

“You sure?” I asked, withholding my sigh of relief.

“Yeah. The alphaholes get snippy about bonding marks, but it’s usually enough to get them to lay off. Even if they could find a willing omega, which is hard enough already, it can’t go any further than a quick fuck.”

I managed a small smile. “A delivery run sounds perfect then. At least our regulars don’t try to get into my pants.”

“I’ll get you the list.”

“Thanks man.”

“No sweat. Just let me know if they’re too much, ok? Andrew or I can switch out, or I can still hire an alpha temp.”

“I think I’m just moody. My heat’s in a couple weeks, and you know how hard they are on me.”

Mason nodded. “Yeah, I know. Go on, before another alphahole comes in.”

“Don’t have to tell me twice.”

Mason laughed. “Get.”

He tossed me the keys to the work van, which he’d been able to buy after the number of deliveries ramped up following the article. He then yelled into the back. “Hey Andrew, Daniel’s taking the delivery. Help take it out will ya?”

“You got it boss!” Andrew yelled from the back.

I was nearly past Mason when he stopped me. “You’ve already got some time scheduled for that wedding, and you have more coming. Why not tack a few more days off onto it and relax some? It’ll be tight around here, but most of the Easter prep is done. Andrew and I can keep up with the front and making enough chocolate to maintain the stock.”

I was about to refuse, but realized it might not be such a bad idea. Maybe a few days away could help me clear my head.

“You know?” I replied. “I’ll think about it.”

Mason smiled. “Do. I’d rather have you out a few extra days than have you stressed and burnt out.”

“Lord knows I’ll be stressed after several days with my extended family.”

Mason laughed. “You want family stress? Remind me to tell you about my mother-in-law.”

“Fuck no!” I laughed. “That bitch is crazy.”

Mason grinned at me. “Go on, and think about taking an extra few days.”

“I will.”

“Good.”

Andrew had almost finished loading up the van by the time I got outside. I gave him a wave, climbed in and started the engine.

I pulled onto the main road and headed toward one of the small office buildings. But my thoughts were only marginally on driving.

Instead my mind drifted to the upcoming wedding, which Mason had unfortunately reminded me of. At twenty-nine I was the oldest of the cousins still without a mate, and my busybody relatives were always trying to set me up.

A few days to wind down from their constant nagging wouldn’t be the worst idea.

Heck, it wouldn’t be so bad if they could even present somewhat palatable choices. But they thought I needed a big strong, overbearing, alphahole in my life.

No thank you.

Besides… my heart belonged to only one alpha. He just didn’t know it.

Gemini Kisses #6
Chapter 1 - Kyle
“Hey Ty, have you seen my hoodie?”

“I threw it away,” Tyler shouted from his room.

I marched down the hall and stood in his doorway, glaring at him. “Why would you throw away my favorite hoodie?”

“Because that cheating asshole gave it to you, and it reeked of him, and you need a new start.”

“I can wash out the alpha stench! It was comfy!”

“And every time you put it on the past few months you got the sniffles. You only stopped crying over the damn thing when it got too hot to wear it.”

“That’s still no reason to toss it!”

He stood from his bed, walked over, and rested his hands on my shoulders. “I’ll buy you a new hoodie, ok. But you need a clean break, which means tossing any fond memory of that alphahole to the curb. You’ve just graduated, and you’re headed off to a new job. It’s time to find a new alpha too.”

I crossed my arms. “I’m done with alphas for now. They’re nothing but cheating knotheads.”

He grinned at me. “Good. Now how about we take that attitude away from your packing and hit the club tonight.”

I slapped my forehead with my palm. “Being done with alphas doesn’t mean I want to go grind against them all night.”

Tyler laughed. “Come on. The movers will be here Monday for your stuff. This is our last chance to have fun before you move out.”

“I’m only moving to Mountain Springs. It’s not like I’m moving across the country. It’s just over an hour away, so we can still meet up a ton.”

“Not the same as down the hall,” Tyler replied, crossing his arms. “Besides, nothing like a cutie like you leaving a bunch of alphas with blue balls to get revenge.”

I sighed. Tyler had been my best friend since we were kids, and I knew his moods as well as my own. I could argue as much as I wanted, but eventually he’d drag me to the club.

“I’m not driving,” I replied. “We’re going to get a ride, and I’ll text when I want to leave before you. That way you can decide if you’re done or if you want to get another ride on your own.”

Tyler held up one fist in victory. “That’s more like it. I hope you haven’t packed your skinny jeans yet. They’re the best wrapper to show off the goods, sure to make all the alphas around you drool.”

“I don’t want them to drool. I want to go, get a few drinks, maybe dance with you if you’re not trying to get a dick shoved up your ass, then come home and finish packing.”

“Hey, you could do with a dick up your ass too. It’s been since the asshole since you got laid, and an omega’s got needs. No harm in a bit of anonymous fun.”

“Uh-huh…” I deadpanned. “Ever hear of babies? They can be a side effect of the whole dick in ass thing yanno.”

“Come on. Pack a rubber in your wallet and make him wear it. You’re far enough from your heat it should be enough. Besides, I thought you wanted babies.”

“Not with some rando from a club.”

“Try it, I bet you’ll like it.”

“Not happening,” I stated. “I’ve gone to that club with you for years and have never gone upstairs. I’m not going to start tonight.”

Tyler sighed. “It’s not as weird as you seem to think, and way better than getting dicked down in some back alley.”

“Yeah, I don’t do that either.”

Tyler huffed his long bangs from his forehead. “And that’s why you let the alphahole stay with you for so long. You’re too stuck in the ‘relationship’ mindset. You need to sometimes treat sex as just sex and not something that only couples do.”

“Yeah, not happening. But you enjoy getting all that instead.”

“Oh I will,” he said with a wink. “Come on, let’s go find you something sexy to wear.”

“Only cause it’ll shut you up.”

“That’s the spirit,” he laughed. “One last blast before my bestie moves out.”

“I’m still mad at you for throwing out my hoodie you know.”

“I know, but I still don’t regret it. You need to forget about him, and this is the best way to make a clean break.”

“Yeah, yeah. Jerk.”

“Just wait. You’ll thank me later when you meet a fantastic alpha who’s not turned off by the reek of the trash who hurt you.”

The club was packed, but I wasn’t surprised. It was the start of summer and everybody was looking for a release.

“Name?” asked the bouncer. “

Kyle Donahue,” I replied, used to the routine ever since Tyler had brought me to the club the first time.

The bouncer nodded and I swiped my license when he motioned to the machine. A moment later my name appeared on his screen.

“Looks like all your waivers are in order. Any changes?”

“I’m moving soon.”

He looked up. “Keeping the same phone number?”

I nodded.

“That’s good enough if we need to contact you” the bouncer said. “Go on in.”

I took a step past and turned, waiting for Tyler, who was right behind me.

He grinned and rubbed his hands together as he walked in. “Ok. Let’s get some drinks and find a place to sit.”

“I’ll handle the table and you get the drinks?” I proposed.

“Sounds good,” he replied. “The normal for you?”

“Yeah.”

“Ok, I’ll find you in a few.”

I looked around and spied an empty table off to one side. Tyler would want something closer to the dance floor, but he’d have to deal. He’d dragged me to the club, and I wanted to not be in the middle of everything.

I slipped onto the bench with a sigh of relief. It wasn’t uncommon for a table to be taken before I could get there, so to get one on the first try was a success.

Table acquired, I glanced over at the bar to see Tyler surrounded by alphas. As usual, he was flirting big-time, leaning towards one while making sure the others got a good view of his ass.

He’d definitely have taken a knot by the time we were ready to leave, which meant that I’d be alone for a decent chunk of the night.

I sighed. I should have known better. I had packing to do.

Then again, Tyler had a point. Even though I was only moving an hour away, I was moving. We’d never had more than a few minutes between us since we were children and he lived in the house across the street. We’d moved to Mount Sable together to attend college, and had shared first a dorm room, then an apartment.

When he presented as an omega first, we’d even hoped that I would be an alpha so that we’d always be together. That was how tight we were.

I really couldn’t begrudge him one last night out, though I wish he’d get our drinks and get back to the table rather than leaving me alone.

I started scanning the club. The ratio of alphas to omegas was pretty equal, so I hoped that I wouldn’t be hounded by horny knotheads while Tyler danced.

My eyes had just drifted back to the bar when my breath caught in my throat.

He was stunning, a gem shining from the garbage of the alphas surrounding him. Dark hair, and only lightly muscled. My cock twitched and I felt slick start near my entrance.

Then he turned, and our eyes met.

I couldn’t look away. I wanted—needed—that alpha. Everything inside me demanded that I let him take me somewhere private and fuck a baby into me before putting his mark on my neck.

A group of people passed between us, breaking the gaze, and it was like all the air suddenly slammed back into me.

I kept my eyes on the spot, but by the time the crowd had thinned my alpha had disappeared.

“Hey.”

I jumped to see Tyler standing next to the table.

“You ok?” he asked.

I swallowed, not wanting to admit that I’d wanted to be fucked by an alpha whom I’d only gotten a brief look at. “Yeah.”
