“A bittersweet story of young love, independence, and soul-crushing manipulation. J.A. Owenby shines a light on the impact that mental illness can have on a family.” —Dr. Sheri Kaye Hoff, PhD, Professional Life Coach
Mama didn’t want me. In fact, she would’ve traded my soul back for someone different if God would’ve let her, but he didn’t, so she was stuck with me.
For eighteen-year-old Lacey, life at home is a rollercoaster. She doesn’t think she’ll ever be good enough to truly deserve Mama’s love.
But when Lacey enters college and meets Walker, everything starts to change. Suddenly, Lacey is face to face with the realization that maybe what she’s always seen as normal really isn’t. Her entire life—and everything she’s ever believed about herself and her family—is abruptly hanging in midair.
Lacey is left facing two paths, and she has to make a choice. The first means walking away from everything she’s ever known. The other means never really knowing the truth.
The TruthShe Knew offers an honest and powerful glimpse into mental illness, the meaning of true love, and the psychological waltz that a daughter dances as she endures her mother’s unpredictable emotions, manipulation, and abuse.
1. What is the biggest influence/interest that brought you to this genre?
Colleen Hoover has been my most significant influence. When I read “Slammed” and “Hopeless” I knew which direction I wanted to move in concerning my writing. At that time, I already had three short stories traditionally published but wanted to learn about writing a full-length novel.
2. When writing a book, what is your favorite part of the creative process (outline, plot, character names, editing, etc.)?
I’d say characters. I love to create characters and stories that make you laugh, cry, and cheer. My characters fall in love for the first time, find their truth, and step into the journey of becoming an adult while dealing with modern social issues of abuse, mental illness, and religious manipulation.
3. When reading a book, what genre do you find most interesting/intriguing?
I love new adult because it’s more realistic and deals with real life issues and choices.
4. If you could co-author with any author, past or present, who would you choose?
Colleen Hoover or Rebecca Donavan. I’ve met Colleen, and she’s pretty amazing.
5. Have you always wanted to write or did it come to you "later in life"?
Both, I started writing short stories when I was barely old enough to hold a pencil. I put everything on hold while I raised my kids, and now, I’m writing full time and loving every minute of it.
