Saturday's Series Spotlight: Promises by Amy Lane

Keeping Promise Rock (#1)
Summary:
Carrick Francis has spent most of his life jumping into trouble with both feet. The only thing saving him from prison or worse is his absolute devotion to Deacon Winters. Deacon was Crick's sanity and salvation during a miserable, abusive childhood, and Crick would do anything to stay with him forever. So when Deacon's father dies, Crick puts his college plans on hold to help Deacon as Deacon has helped him.
Deacon's greatest wish is to see Crick escape his memories and the town they grew up in so Crick can enjoy a shining future. But after two years of growing feelings and temptation, the painfully shy Deacon finally succumbs to Crick's determined advances and admits he sees himself as part of Crick's life.
It nearly destroys Deacon when he discovers Crick has been waiting for him to push him away, just like Crick's family did in the past. When Crick's knack for volatile decisions lands him far away from home, Deacon is left, shell-shocked and alone, struggling to reforge his heart in a world where love with Crick is a promise, but by no means a certainty.

Both Deacon and Crick need a double shot of communication in this tale.  How many times wouldn't things have turned out differently if they had just talked, but then what kind of story would that have been?  This is a beautifully written story with interesting characters that puts the reader through the ringer but it's so worth it.  Not only are the main characters loveable(and stubborn) but so is the surrounding cast.  I look forward to reading the entire series and if they are only half as good as this one(which I have no doubts about it being more than) I won't want it to end when I reach the final page of the fourth book.

Making Promises (#2)
Summary:
All Shane Perkins ever wanted to be was a hero. But after a career-shattering decision to go down fighting, Shane comes home from the hospital to four empty walls, a pile of money, and a burning desire for someone to miss him the next time he gets hurt in the line of duty. He ends up an officer in the small town of Levee Oaks, and, addicted to the promise of family, he makes an effort to reconcile with his flighty, troubled sister. Kimmy makes her living as a dancer, and her partner steals Shane's breath at first sight. Mikhail Vasilyovitch Bayul dances like an angel, but his past is less than heavenly. Since he left Russia, he's made only two promises: to stay off the streets and stay clean, and to take his mother someplace beautiful before she dies. Making promises to anybody else is completely out of the question-but then, Mikhail has never met anybody like Shane. Earnest, brave, and self-deprecating, Shane seems to speak Mikhail's language, and no one is more surprised than Mikhail to find that keeping promises is Shane's best talent of all.

NOTE:  I started book 2 but was sidetracked by family health issues and haven't returned to it yet. But I can tell you that I was well on my way to loving the tale between Shane and                                                                       Mikhail and will definitely be returning to their story.

Living Promises (#3)
Summary:
Six years ago, Jeff Beachum comforted a frightened teenager outside an HIV treatment clinic, and Collin Waters has remembered his kindness ever since. Now, after six years of crushing on the kind, brown-eyed sweetheart of his dreams, Collin is feeling adult and together enough to make his move. Too bad fate, which has never been kind to Jeff, has something else in mind.
Jeff's life had fallen completely apart before that long-ago day, and it isn't much better now. Jeff has toughened up, become self-reliant, been the funny guy his friends turn to, the one who gives advice and comfort when needed. But every phantom from Jeff's past is about to come out to haunt him, and the family Jeff has staked his future on isn't in such great shape either. Collin is more than a starry-eyed kid, and it's a good thing, because Jeff's going to need all the help he can get. No one knows better than Jeff that life can be too short to turn your back on honest love, and that living happily is the best promise of all.

Forever Promises (#4)
Summary:
Crick has been home from Iraq for five years, Jeff and Collin are finally married, and Shane and Mikhail are quietly making lives better for the dispossessed teenagers who come their way. Everything is right in Deacon's world, but nothing ever stays the same.
When Deacon's best friends, Jon and Amy, answer the call of an opportunity in Washington, DC, Deacon figures that’s life. You love people, and they leave you, and you survive. Even Benny, Crick’s little sister, is close to grown and ready to start her own future. But Benny loves Deacon, and she owes him—she may move beyond The Pulpit and Levee Oaks one day, but not without leaving something of herself behind. And so she offers Deacon and Crick an amazing gift… and a terrifying decision.
Benny’s offer forces Deacon and Crick to dredge up every past mistake and offer of redemption. And not just the two of them—everybody is forced to examine the chances they've been given and the promises they've made. In a real family, a child is a promise, and to the men and women of Promise Rock, keeping that promise will change their lives forever.

Friday's Film Adaptions: Dracula by Bram Stoker

I'll be devoting a post on Fridays for the books that have been turned into films over the years.  I'm starting with one of the classics--Bram Stoker's Dracula.

Summary:
When Jonathan Harker visits Transylvania to help Count Dracula with the purchase of a London house, he makes horrifying discoveries about his client and his castle. Soon afterwards, a number of disturbing incidents unfold in England: an unmanned ship is wrecked at Whitby; strange puncture marks appear on a young woman’s neck; and the inmate of a lunatic asylum raves about the imminent arrival of his ‘Master’. In the ensuing battle of wits between the sinister Count Dracula and a determined group of adversaries, Bram Stoker created a masterpiece of the horror genre, probing deeply into questions of human identity and sanity, and illuminating dark corners of Victorian sexuality and desire.

A true classic of creepy suspense.  Not too much else to say, if you're a lover of horror/suspense then this is definitely something you should read.  Dracula will forever be the quintessential vampire.  As for the films, I have to say that no one will ever make a better vampire or Dracula than Bela Lugosi in Hollywood's 1931 film.  The 1966 Hammer Film, Dracula: The Prince of Darkness, is another favorite of mine, Christopher Lee is a great Count as well.

“Losing her mind wasn’t an experience she enjoyed.”
After a steamy night of passion with a dark stranger, Arbor’s life takes on a surreal edge. Disturbing dreams, lapses in memory, and entire buildings going missing are only a few of her problems. Her search for answers leads her to Detective Trey Murphy, the man in charge of investigating satanic and ritualistic crime for the New Orleans’ area.
Where do you turn when your mind is the enemy?
Meeting Trey only adds to Arbor’s confusion. By day, he keeps her captivated and gains her trust in a way no one else ever has. At night, Arbor’s every fantasy is brought to life by two sexy men who steal away her inhibitions. Torn between what her heart knows is real and what her eyes show her, Arbor must find the truth before she loses herself completely.
But then again, sometimes reality is more twisted than any dream and love is the cruelest form of insanity.

**Author Note**
Warning: This isn’t your typical love story. It’s dark with scenes some may find disturbing. Sometimes love is senseless, and the heart is so very stupid.

“I thought you were with the band,” he said as he lifted his coffee to his lips. It was the only way he could think to open the topic for discussion. Not that he cared, of course. She’d called him. It was a start. If there was a line he wouldn’t cross when it came to getting what he wanted—namely, her—he hadn’t yet seen it. Deep longing for something out his reach was a familiar weight. Her eyes never left the dessert menu. He knew she wasn’t really seeing it because her gaze remained fixed to one spot.
“With the band,” she repeated, sounding wry and making him wonder if he’d insulted her. “That would require knowing where they are,” she added so quietly Trey assumed it was meant more for her than him. With a shake of her head, Arbor met his stare. For a split second, Trey was rendered mute. Everything around them disappeared. It punched him in the chest. She possessed something other people did not.
“What about you?” Her question didn’t make as much sense as it might have if she wasn’t affecting his brain function.
“I’m not with the band,” he said automatically, pulling a ghost of a smile from her.
“You’re a cop,” she said, helping him along.
“Detective actually.” He wasn’t trying to be a dick. It was more that he’d worked hard to get where he was. She set her elbows on the table. A playful light entered her eyes.
     “What do you detect?”
“Satanic and ritualistic homicides.” Huh. She didn’t even flinch.
“I wasn’t aware there was such a high number of those types of murders that it required a special title. Are you the only one or is there an entire division?”
Against his will, Trey’s lips twisted. “Unfortunately, there is a need for such a title. There’re three of us. I’m not sure it counts as an entire division. Louisiana is a hotbed of all things satanic and ritualistic. You’re likely to run across anything here.”
Her gaze moved over his face, but her expression remained blank. “You do look tired.” Before he had time to react, she added, “I’ll have to take your word on the matter. I only moved here two weeks ago.”
He opened his mouth to ask more. Instead, something entirely different popped out. “You’re beautiful.” She blinked. Her surprise evident. There was no way she was as shocked as he was. He hadn’t meant to say it. It was true, of course, but it had still slipped past his lips without his permission.
“Thank you.” Arbor’s response sounded more questioning than automatic. He snorted. She blushed. The sight fascinated him. Their knees brushed making Trey realize somehow, he’d moved his chair closer to hers.

Arbor Sinclair was born in Colorado where she lived until her early twenties. From there she moved to New Orleans to follow the two greatest loves of her life.
Killian Moore and Lyric Wynters are the front men for the popular grundge-rock band Excile. They spent several years tourning the country before meeting Arbor.
Trey Murphy lived with his grandparents for most of his life until he went off to college to earn his degree in forensic science. It’s always been his dream to make detective.

Her Men by Ashley Ladd

TITLE –  Her Men
SERIES –  N/A
AUTHOR –  Ashley Ladd
GENRE –  Contemporary Erotic Romance
PUBLICATION DATE – September 25, 2014
LENGTH (Pages/# Words) – 24, 200
PUBLISHER –  Totally Bound
COVER ARTIST –  Emmy Ellis

Summary:
Forty-four year old Julie Weston has loved Timmy and James since her college days twenty something years ago. She's fantasized about both all these long years, never able to choose between them.

Hoping Tim and James will attend, she attends their college marching band reunion. When both men show up her dreams are answered. They're sexier than she imagined and she hopes they won't be disappointed by her older self.

It turns out both men came just to see her again and neither is happy about the other’s presence. They fight over her, confusing her more than ever. It takes a hot mΓ©nage…or two…for her heart to decide which one she’s in love with.

There's always that someone we wonder about, "what could have been", but with Her Men we get to see what could have been times two, sort of.  It's definitely got heat, humor, and even a little suspense in the who does she choose category.  The characters are well written and likeable, the plot is something that most of us can relate to, whether we admit it or not, and it's a short read.  The length is the reason I am giving this 4 bookmarks instead of 5, I would have loved to have delved further into certain parts of the story, but it's definitely not a negative.  I would and will definitely recommend this to others.  I look forward to more from this author again.

     Damn Tim.
First he ruined her life by leaving. Now he might ruin it by coming back.
Dear God, why did she love two men? How could she choose between them?
Maybe they didn’t want a forever. Maybe they just wanted a good hop in the sack, and by the end of the weekend she would have been doubly wham bammed thank you ma’ammed and going home to Indiana with just her handcuffs.
Should she let this go further before she made up her mind? Or would making love to one or both help her decide? Was it possible to decide in two days? One thing was sure—if she let herself loose, fulfilled her fantasies, she’d have a lot better memories than the last time she left Mississippi.
But James was here now, warm in her arms. Ready to make love, she squirmed beside him. “I’m feeling much better. Much, much better.”
She hoped he got her drift. She wasn’t as brave in real life as she was in her fantasies and there was no way she could brazenly say, ‘I’m so hot and horny I want you to fuck me now’.
Light blazed in his eyes and he gathered her closer. Then he lowered his lips and captured hers in a light but exploratory kiss. When she groaned into his mouth and wound her fingers through his long hair, he deepened the kiss. His tongue played with hers as he slid his hands under her nightie, filled his hands with her breasts and ran the pads of his thumbs around her nipples as they puckered to his touch. Then he squeezed the nipples, elongating them between his fingers.

Julie Alexander Weston is the sheriff of her small Indiana town. She’s also an ex-FBI agent with degree in Russian literature. Disenchanted with her current career since she shot and killed a young man in error, she has a new hobby which she hopes to make into a new career—she’s writing and photographing copy table books that she hopes to publish. As accomplished as she is, she’s never stopped loving or dreaming about her college boyfriend and her college best friend. Now that she’s divorced and there’s a college reunion, she attends in the hopes of seeing if any sparks are left with either of them.

Playing Charlie Cool by Laurie Boris

Series: Trager Family Secrets #3 (can be read as a stand-alone)
Genre: Contemporary Fiction/Gay Fiction
Cover Designer: Paul Blumstein
Release Date: October 1, 2014

Summary:
With a few humble words, mayoral staffer Joshua Goldberg comes out to the New York press, resigns his post, and leaves his wife. Three months later, he is still skittish about making his relationship with television producer Charlie Trager public.

Charlie understands Joshua’s stress over the divorce and his desire to step back into the political spotlight. But he’s tired of schedule conflicts and frustrated about getting put on the back burner while the pressure ravages the man he loves. Managing some of the most demanding divas in network television has taught Charlie patience. But his cool facade is wearing thin.

Longing to ease Joshua’s anguish and burning for control in a situation that seems headed off the rails, Charlie takes a huge risk that could destroy everything he and Joshua have worked so hard to build.

A twinkle lit Liza’s brown eyes. “You know what I want to see first?”
“A door on my office?” They rounded the corner into the hallway. “Yes, I’d like to see one of those, too.”
     “Charlie…”
“I know. You want to see the new carpeting in the green room. Excellent choice.”
She huffed out a breath and swatted at his arm. “I want to see”—she lowered her voice—“where he kissed you.”
“Ah. Well, you’re gonna have to be more specific. Which ‘he’ and in which place?”
She stopped, and with one hand on her hip gave him an eyebrow that Melanie would have been proud to call her own. “You’re awfully caffeinated today.”
“And you’re so much fun to tease.” He looped his arm through hers. “Right this way.”
He led her around the side of the stage and down the corridor behind it, stopping outside the archive room.
“Here?” Liza peered inside. “The file room? How Jack Lemmon of you.”
“It wasn't in there.” He pointed to the floor. “It was here.”
Her eyes widened. “In the middle of the hall? You kissed the congressman in the middle of the hall?”
