Title: Hysteriata
Author: D.A. Botta
Series: Elyzian Chronicles #1
Publication date: March 21st 2014
Genres: Fantasy, New Adult

Summary:
Emily Hobbs is off to Salem State College when a chance encounter with a fortuneteller changes everything. Emily is transported to the realm of Elyzia and learns that she is, in fact, one of the most powerful witches in existence.

Madame Lavache, the strict headmistress of Cedalion Covenstead, has her sights set on Emily. In her desperate cling to power, Lavache attempts to protect her tyranny by invoking sinister forces, including bloodthirsty pirates and The Devil himself, to rid Elyzia of the rebellious witch.

Along with her companions – an old hermit, a small coven of witches, and their totems – Emily sets out on a collision course with destiny.

Just as the tarot foretold.

A powerful witch
A simple tarot read
And all hell breaks loose

Emily slunk closer to the glowing well and peered into its depths. The water bubbled and swelled in the hardened clay of underground. The candlelight illuminated the ceiling, casting shine and shadows dispersing throughout the dark. Hues of blue and sediment captivated Emily.
The colors shifted. Now Paige danced drunkenly about a snapping fire. Her body enveloped by the orange glow of bonfire. Paronskaft shrunk back against the wall.
“That scene …” he blurted, “is not for now.” He bit his lips closed and trembled.
Paige stood amongst the others, Gretchen and Melanie and Chloe, all of them. She waited for her turn to leap over the celebratory fire. First Gretchen leapt, then Chloe, Brenna and even Melanie, hurled themselves above the towering flame. There was laughter and music as the boys, too, leapt in their boots, soaring over the tops of the fire and crashing down on the other side. The ceremony burned into the autumn eve.
Paige leapt into the air wildly, drunk on wine, and the flames sucked her down into their belly. She seared and shrieked as her clothes burned away. The others watched horrified as the scorched silhouette flailed within the orange bonfire belly. Her hair turned quickly to dust and her skin blistered and charred. The shadow figure collapsed into miserable ashes and died wretchedly.
The image diluted into the watery pool and Emily fell to her knees and sobbed.
“It’s a trick!” Emily shouted, her voice echoing up through the chambers. “It’s a damned trick, you old fool!”
Paronskaft was taken aback, shocked at the insinuation. His feeble body shuttered against the affront. He wrapped his golden cloak tightly to his skeletal frame.
“I make no tricks, Miss Emily,” he quivered. “I make no tricks on you! Time is an essence.”
“I can stop this?! I can save Paige, you mean? How much time do I have?!”
     “You have no time.”
Emily tore out of the cave and rode east, bounding along on Mongrel, weaving through clusters of trees and stones. The late night air splashed the last of the raindrops against her face while Mongrel galloped steadily toward the grounds. A few yards from the edge of the hillside, Mongrel shrunk into his miniature size, quickly and suddenly, which threw Emily off over his shoulders and into crumply dry grasses and brush.
“You could warn me, you know,” she admonished while she quickly laced up her boots. She retrieved a Scynderstem from Paronskaft’s box. “Meet me at the covenstead, okay?”
Mongrel yapped and pranced off.
     “Go ahead and go!”
Emily secured her satchel over her shoulder crosswise and dug the balls of her feet into the ground. She leapt off, arcing and descending spans of nearly one hundred yards. The smoke from the bonfire crept up into the air over the eastern wall of Cedalion. I’m coming, Paige! she wailed in her mind. Emily soared and sailed toward the ceremony. Stop! Don’t leap!! she cried out inside. A lyre was playing, singing into the crisp air and laughter and dancing could be seen from the peaks.
     Dread filled her bones.
Drew coasted over the seething flames. Then Melanie gracelessly rocketed over the fire. Next Ethan perfectly arced over. Wait! Don’t go! The scent of wine and embers wafted into Emily’s nose as she drew near. Nooo, my love! No!! The heat of the high flame pushed against her body. Paige crested the blaze and was pulled down just as Paronskaft’s pool had shown. Emily pressed her thumb into the Scynderstem and it broke as she leapt again, fearless at the fire, and cast the spell.
Paige wriggled and writhed in the hot orange glows, blackened already near the fire’s blue bottom. Emily wrapped her arms around Paige’s waist and dug her toes into the powdery ash to quickly leap again.
The pair landed near the twisty elm sprinkled with twinkling fireflies. Emily held Paige in her arms, resting what was left of her friend in her lap. Emily looked at her friend who heaved shallow breaths into the air. Paige’s body, smoldering still and black, released streams of smoke up passed the branches and into the air. Their eyes met and Emily let loose her woeful tears.
“I am here,” breathed Emily. “I am here with you.”
“I … love you,” Paige mouthed as she departed.
“I love you Paige!” Emily wailed. “Don’t go! Don’t leave me!”
     Paige’s eyes shut forever.
An astonished crowd gathered a few yards away, shaken witnesses to the sadness and grief. After a long moment, Emily slipped out from under Paige and tenderly set her body into the grass. Her face contorted and her entire body trembled with loss. She trudged over to where Paige and the others had sat. She snatched up Paige’s lantern of fireflies. She grew angry in her hurt. She raged in her mind and ached in her heart.
Observing from a ways off, the Madame and the Ladies and the Lyre Man observed the tragedy in solemn seclusion.
“That girl,” Madame Lavache whispered to herself, “is going to raise havoc.”
The glass jar shattered into glimmering slivers and the fireflies were released to the sinewy elm.

Author Interview
Q:  What is unique about your fantasy series?
A:  First, the plots of the novels follow a tarot reading set out early in the stories.  This gave the novels a structure and theme I could really work with.  Each chapter involves the decoding of a tarot card in the spread.  Secondly, I incorporated elements from witchcraft, tarot, astrology, mythology, and runes into each story.  This gave Elyzia its richness.  It made for interesting characters, suspenseful plot threads, and themes that I could string throughout. It’s really a comprehensive blend of fantasy.
Q:  Are there spells in your stories?
A:  There just may be.  I strongly advise not attempting them at home.  Only experienced witches should meddle in magick and spellcasting.  I did alter some recipes slightly … for no good reason.
Q:  What does New Adult offer your stories?
A:  New Adult is a real shift from young adulthood to adulthood.  It’s that brief space in time where things are really exciting and a person has to figure out who they are.  For some people, it’s a traumatic experience.  It can be tremendously invigorating too.  I think, for stories, it makes for extra dramatic (any perhaps traumatic) events – psychological, emotional, spiritual or physical.  I try to capture a lot of these perspectives throughout the series.
Q:  What is the main theme of The Elyzian Chronicles?
A:  There are a lot of themes interwoven throughout the chronicles, but if I can sum it up it’s: to truly know yourself is to have all the power in the world.  I think that can be dissected in many ways, but essentially its understanding and embracing your own unique identity despite a world that tries to change you.  Understanding your fears, knowing your limits (or the cause of your limits) is a liberating thing.  I think people learn who they are forced by people or circumstance to honestly look at themselves.  I believe it’s a powerful thing, and ultimately a positive one.
Q:  What is your writing process like?
A:  Painful and slow.  I have a natural impatience.  Writing for me is grueling.  I did a ton of research for the chronicles, not just for world-building but also for the magick and mythology.  I wanted to keep true to the various elements (witchcraft, tarot, mythology) I was using, to a degree.  I wanted to be respectful of those things and still push the envelope a little.  I think once you understand something, you figure out where you can play with it a little to make it distinctive.  I write at night, often late into the night.  It makes for foggy mornings, and with a 3 year old daughter that’s pretty trying.  I write linearly, mostly.  I did skip forward when I got stuck, and revisited places once I fleshed out some of the heftier parts.  But, I’m not one for rules.  I wrote poetically where I wanted to.  I wrote flowery where I wanted to.  I think the modern convention of chopping hundreds of words has some merit, but in fantasy I think you need to build entire worlds and civilizations.  That is done with words, so it is a real challenge to strike that balance.
Q:  Who would play your main characters in a movie?
A:  I’ve gone over this a million times in my head over the past few years.  I think a majority of authors want to see their books become movies.  It’s a natural progression.  If an author says differently, they could possibly be lying.  Emily is such a complicated character.  I’d have to say Kate Mara would be a top choice.  I’d love to see upstart talent in any role.  I always pictured Uma Thurman as Madame Lavache.  I’d have loved to see Robin Williams play Paronskaft, the quirky old hermit.
Q:  Why did you choose to write a female protagonist?
A:  Witchcraft, and paganism in general, is strongly influenced by feminine power.  It was a simple choice, really.  One of the great things to come from Dan Brown’s Da Vinci Code was a reintroduction of the concept of the sacred feminine into our lexicon.  I think Brown really helped to educate a generation about the suppression and obfuscation of feminine spirit and the historical importance of goddess worship.  For me, it was about honoring the struggles of a strong female, against other strong women and men.  The gender stereotypes are broken down and juxtaposed in the chronicles.  We see this with Emily’s sexuality, and with the contrast with, say, the pirate captains Brodish and Dresden.  In Sinfluence, I depict even starker contrasts with the character Braun (a satyr).
Q:  What readers would enjoy Hysteriata and the rest of The Elyzian Chronicles?
A:   Definitely folks who read Rowling, but also readers who really enjoy some hefty NA.  My characters endure some pretty intense situations.  There are struggles between love and hate, power and weakness, fate and freedom, life and death, action, suspense, drama, satire, romance – all wrapped up in this magickal world.  The series has believable characters with complex relationships.  There is a lot for everyone really.
Q:  What is your all-time favorite book and why?
A:  It’s going to sound a little strange, but my absolute favorite book is The Phantom Tollbooth by Norton Juster.  It was one of the first books I read where I was like, “Wow! This is how you can play with words! This is art!”  It shows in some of the words I created and my book titles.  I believe that type of creative license makes treetrunk and springwater single words.  Sometimes, as a writer, you just ignore parts of spellcheck when you know it works.  My all-time favorite New Adult read, so far, is Butterman Time Travel Inc by PK Hrezo. It’s some awesome sci-fi.  Very solid contemporary and super fun.
Q:  What’s your advice to other writers?
A:  I don’t typically offer writing advice.  It’s just a very personal and private craft.  But I will say this: I think one of the biggest mistakes writers make is they select a time for writing, and everyday they sit down at whatever-o’clock and open their laptop to begin typing.  It’s the wrong approach – and apologies to any NaNoWriMo-ers out there.  I don’t believe in it.  I think we put an enormous amount of pressure on ourselves, myself too, to produce.  Perhaps the best nights I spent “writing” were those I actually didn’t write a single word.  I just daydreamed of that place or those characters.  Sure I beat myself up over it, but looking back over four years of writing a series, I find that those were my most successful nights.  Just thinking.  Just owning that space.  Just being in that story for awhile.  The words will come when they come.

Twisted by Cari Quinn & Taryn Elliott

Title: Twisted
Authors: Cari Quinn and Taryn Elliott
Series: Lost in Oblivion #2
Publication date: December 2nd 2014
Genres: Contemporary, New Adult, Romance

Summary:
He’s always saved her. Now she’s going to return the favor…

Gray Duffy never thought he’d end up as the co-lead guitarist of Oblivion, one of the hottest rock bands in the country. Even better? He’s sharing the experience with his best friend, Jazz. Since the day she’d showed up as his family’s new foster kid, Gray has protected her. Loved her. And not just platonically either. After all these years of wanting her in his bed, he still doesn’t know what it would be like to have her mouth on his.

Except for that one time. The time he’d shared her with Nick. The best worst night of his life.

Now they’re living their dream. They’re making music together and spending every waking moment trapped in tight quarters. With success at their fingertips, the time is right for him to finally make his move toward the woman he needs.

He just never figured he would lose control. Or that she would find out.

They’ve loved each other through everything. But what if this time love just isn’t enough?

Curves.  So many curves. Jazz was like a living G-clef made out of flesh and flawless diamond-crushed skin.  The ruby red tips of her breasts peeked out from beneath the waves of her white-blonde hair.  Thanks to the spill of light from the window, he would see that the same flushed bloomed between her legs, beyond enticing.  It would be so easy to move forward and take.  To just drown himself in her until he couldn’t remember anymore why this was wrong.
“Jazz,” Gray breathed, shutting his eyes to block out the torch-light of her beauty in front of him. He couldn’t breathe through his want. Couldn’t think through the haze of his need. And his love.
He fucking loved her, and he’d fight not to do this with every fiber of his being. She deserved more than a strung-out bastard who’d turned to pot because he couldn’t get ahold of more coke. For fuck’s sake, even his dealer wouldn’t return his calls.
Now she was here, and he couldn’t get high enough not to feel each of the knives carving him up inside.
“Gray,” she said, equally soft. He didn’t open his eyes but her voice crept closer. “Look at me.”
“No.” The word burst from him on an exhale. “No.”
Her hand touched his bare chest and he jolted as if she’d set off a stick of dynamite. Her chuckle rubbed over his nerve endings, sandpaper and silk, and he struggled to hold back a shudder. Only the steel beam he’d shoved in his spine held him upright.
“Back when I used to get high, it’d lower my inhibitions,” she continued. “It made me excited. I know it’s supposed to relax you, but it had a different effect on me.”
He focused on each of her words on its own, so he couldn’t take them all together and feel their impact. He couldn’t let her do this. The man she was trying to seduce might’ve been worthy of her a year ago. He hadn’t believed it fully then either but he knew without doubt that he wasn’t now.
“As if you ever had inhibitions,” he muttered, unable to summon the strength to raise his voice. All his blood had rerouted to his cock. All his air was fueling his starving cells. He could only not inhale for so long. But if he did, he’d smell her again, watermelon and sugar, and he’d be finished.
“Oh, you’d be surprised. I’ve wanted you for years. And I haven’t done one damn thing to let you know.” She started circling him, her body brushing against his. Hip to thigh, thigh to ass. Her fingers trailed from his chest to his arm to his back, sensual feathers of sensation that made his balls clench so tight he feared any movement would send him over the edge. “But I will tonight.”
He gritted his teeth. “You can’t. You don’t know me anymore. You don’t understand what you’re getting into.”
That made her stop. Her fingers pressed into his lower back as she processed his words.
     Please, make them be enough.
She completed her loop around him and hooked her fingers in the front of his jeans. He groaned at the slide of skin on skin. He heard her inhale before the wisps of her breath kissed his mouth. “So show me.”

***Hope you enjoy this deleted scene that didn’t make it into the final manuscript of TWISTED!***
Gray reclined in his seat, kicking out his legs as far as he could in the SUV’s back seat. It was one of those monster, tricked out ones like he still drove occasionally for Elite Transport, though that was mostly out of a sense of loyalty than anything else. It wasn’t like he needed the money anymore.
     Or the access to blow.
As one of the co-lead guitarists of Oblivion, one of the biggest up-and-coming bands around—according to their press kit—he could get anything he wanted pretty much as soon as the thought occurred. Drugs, expensive alcohol, cheap girls. Those in particular were everywhere. A snap of a finger and he could have two in his lap.
Well, not right now. He was crammed in with his band, their manager and their driver in an Escalade zooming up Sepulveda Boulevard. There wasn’t any room in here for women.
He cast a quick glance to his right to their drummer. She sat with her knees drawn up to her chest as she bobbed her head to the music coming through her headphones. Aqua and sapphire blue striped hair waved down her back in time with her movements and sparkling bangle bracelets caught the passing sunlight every time she tapped her fingers against her thigh.
     That particular woman didn’t count.
Even when she counted for too much.
He dragged his jacket over his face and tried to block out the voices around him. Too many voices. Before the past year, it had been a long time since he’d been in the middle of chaos, and now it was his daily reality.
Oblivion was on its way to another media thing at some big ass radio station in LA. That meant a couple of hours of standing around, waiting for their turn. Questions, photos, lots of acting fake. Maybe if he was lucky he’d get to strum his guitar on command and talk about the new single that was about to drop. Anything was better than muttering about his “songwriting process” and “if it was true what they said about guitarists in rock bands.” That usually meant some lewd joke about how fast he could get a woman off, which he’d answer with a cocky laugh while pretending he wasn’t mentally stabbing the deejay.
He loved music. It had saved him, was still saving him every goddamn day. What he didn’t love? The press. Talking too much. Anything that wasn’t, yanno, actually playing his freaking songs.
Smothering a yawn from under his jacket, he turned his cheek and tried to get a few minutes sleep. He’d been blessed with the ability to drop off anywhere anytime and that skill had come in very handy during their weeks on the road. When he wanted to check out, nothing stopped him.
Not even the song he’d written for Jazz playing on the radio for the first time.
He went still, barely breathing as the first frenetic notes of “Twisted” came out of the speakers. Everyone was talking so loudly that they didn’t hear it at first. Simon yelled something about needing a hamburger, and Deak tried to calm him down with promises to stop at a fast food place soon. Nick interjected a comment about Simon loving meat, especially the wet, pink kind. Jazz, happily oblivious, sung along to Alanis Morisette on her headphones.
And layered beneath it all played the words Gray had written the night he’d watched Jazz fuck another guy.
Everything I do, it’s for you. You don’t see it. Don’t feel it. I’m just the picture on the wall. The man you call. Maybe it’s your fault. Maybe it’s mine.
     We got it twisted.
     So twisted.
The shouts turned to silence, followed by loud whoops of laughter and cheers.
Hidden under his jacket, Gray groaned. He’d known this day would come—the day when the whole world got to hear him pour his heart out to the woman he’d loved since he was sixteen.
     He just hadn’t been ready.
     Would never be ready.

Author Guest Post:
Hi everyone!  Thanks so much for stopping in to let me talk a little bit about TWISTED.  I’m Taryn Elliott and I co-write the Lost in Oblivion series with Cari Quinn. We started this crazy idea thanks to our mutual obsession with music. We both came up with individual ideas for musicians and decided…hmmm. Well, that’s stupid. We work well together already as critique partners. Oh, and we’re best friends.
Why aren’t we doing a project together again?
Now the danger, of course, is jumping into bed with your best friend. In our case…trust and being co-chairs of our mutual admiration society keeps us pretty happy. That and we have the truly eerie ability to read each other’s mind. I kid you not—it could be a party trick at this point. It’s a little crazy.
There’s a lot of different ways to do the co-authoring thing. Our process?
We both wanted to make music the actual focus of the series.
     No, really. Music.
I know…this is a little shocking, but there are many rock star romances out there that barely touch on the actual music making. AND we wanted it to be a bit grittier than what we’ve seen out there in our e-readers.
With that in mind we make a loose outline of where we want to go with the series. And seriously, I do mean loose. Holy change of heading, Batman! Boy do we throw monkey wrenches in our stories! But instead of arguing about huge changes, or plots that run off the rails…we simply reassess and find that the story is actually better for it in the long run.
The first book, SEDUCED, we wrote together. That book was a beast of a different color in all ways. She was the character of Nick Crandall and I was Simon Kagan. We alternated chapters and stayed strictly in our own character’s point of view. That worked pretty well, but the alternating chapters kind of stilted our writing a little bit. Oh and the introduction novel became a whole different kind of love story. It wasn’t two characters falling in love—it was a band forming, or…for all intents and purposes…falling in love.
After we were finished with that book we knew we needed to focus on the relationships we’d established in SEDUCED. So we decided to take on the full novels and alternate writing that way.
I wrote ROCKED – Harper Pruitt and Deacon McCoy’s story this past April.
Cari wrote TWISTED – Jazz Edwards & Grayson Duffy’s story which comes out December 2nd.
I will take over again and write DESTROYED this upcoming spring – Simon Kagan & Margo Reece’s story.
Then Cari will bookend the series with SHATTERED next winter –Nick Crandall & Lila Shawcross’s love story.
In between, we also write novellas because we juuuuust can’t let go of our characters. At this point, you’d think we were COMPLETELY sick of our characters. 400 pages? Nahhh. I neeeeeeed more!
Then…don’t get us started on the spinoffs. This whole musical world opened up so many different stories for us.  If you saw our storyboards and One Note files you’d weep. It’s a sickness. One that I NEVER want a cure for. Cari and I will never be one of those writers that says, “I’m out of ideas.”
Seriously…TOO many ideas are rambling around in our heads! And man…we wouldn’t have it any other way!
Thanks so much for having us! And we hope you enjoy our next installment of the Lost in Oblivion series, TWISTED!

Prologue
Bobby
I can’t believe I have to go back in two days. There wasn’t enough time. Two weeks is just too short of a leave – I’ve only seen her three times. Once leaving school when I hid in the back of the parking lot. Once she and her mother were packing up to go to Pennsylvania for Christmas; and yesterday she was sitting out on her dock. I was across the river hiding behind a boat just to gaze at her. I feel like such a stalker but my heart aches for her. I haven’t felt whole since I left for basic training.
Now in just two short days I have to report to my Special Forces team. The casualty rate is fifty-nine percent so my odds of making it out in one piece aren’t in my favor. We’re going to the wilds of Afghanistan into the heart of Taliban territory. Along with normal patrols, my team could be called at any time to take out confirmed cells.
Looking into the mirror I finish brushing my teeth. I look much different than when I left eighteen months ago. Gone is the shaggy hair Lisa loved to jerk on while we kissed, now it’s barely more than stubble on my head. I grew two inches and put on thirty pounds of muscle. That’s what happens when you carry seventy-five pounds of gear for ten hours a day. I wonder what she will think when she sees me.
I can’t say I am sorry for leaving this town, that would be a lie. The Army has given my life purpose. Before enlisting the best I could have hoped for was being a plumber or electrician’s assistant until I could get a license. Now when I finally get out of the Army I can get a private security job. Hell, I could even qualify for Secret Service. I might even become a cop. A cop’s salary isn’t even close to what Lisa’s father makes but it’s nothing to sneeze at and it’s an honorable career.      Much better than the minimum paying factory job that her father said I would end up in.
I shake my head. There is no use thinking about a future that is over two years away. I have thirty-two months left before I can plan a future, that’s if I make it back alive. But tonight I have to see her one more time. I am hoping she will talk to me; she was pretty mad when I left. I had to break up with her; it wasn’t fair to ask Lisa to wait. At sixteen you shouldn’t be tied down to an absent boyfriend.
I hear the music as I walk out my door. Joe’s house is just four away from mine and all the neighbors know by now that this party happens each year. As long as the kids stay inside or in his backyard, no one will call the cops to break it up. My heart rate climbs as I get closer to the door. The front door is open and I can see the crowd through the storm door. Patty and April are just inside so I know I won’t be getting in unnoticed.  Taking a deep breath I open the door, “Holy shit!” Patty screeches, “Bobby Harber, where the hell did you come from?” She closes her arms around me. Patty lives across the street from me and we’ve been friends all my life. She is one of the only ones that know how hard I had it growing up. “I’ve missed you,” she whispers in my ear as she hugs me close.
“I missed you too, Red,” I tell her using my childhood name for her. “I’m sorry I don’t write more.” She is the only one I write to now. Well the only one that gets sent the letters I write, I have hundreds written to Lisa stashed away and never posted.
Patty’s arm gets ripped away from me, “Don’t be hogging him all to yourself, you bitch,” April says stepping into my arms. “Damn Bobby, you look good enough to eat,” she laughs while leaning back looking me up and down. April’s always been a flirt but she wouldn’t leave Greg for anything. “She’s in the kitchen, last I saw her,” April winks at me, “Go get your girl.”
The best and worst part of our group is there are no secrets. My being here for just the party is an illusion that won’t last long to the friends who know me. I turn towards the kitchen, “I’ll see you both later,” but I don’t really mean it.
“Just as long as you’re here tomorrow for clean-up crew,” Patty yells after me. New Year’s Day always starts with cleaning Joe’s house before we sit, eating and drinking leftovers while watching the games on TV. It will feel good to do something so normal so I turn and give her a thumbs up.  I receive greetings from everyone on my way back to the kitchen, they all comment on how I’ve gotten bigger and how happy they are I’m back in one piece. I scan the kitchen when I enter, there are a bunch of guys sitting at the table probably going to start a game of quarters, I wave at them but I’m not here for drinking games. I’m surprised to see Brad here, he never really hung around our group but if I know him he’s still sniffing around Lisa.  He always rubbed me the wrong way, I know he wants her but she only feels friendship towards him. Lisa’s not in here so I grab a beer and make my way into the family room where Joe sets up the dance floor.
Joe is standing to the right of the doorway and I bump my shoulder into him as I search the room for Lisa. I find her just as Joe shakes my hand, “I wasn’t expecting to see you,” he says patting my back.
“Where else would I be tonight?” I joke back, my eyes never leaving Lisa. She spots me and stops, her caramel eyes widen and I read so many emotions there; surprise, hurt, want, love – that surprises me, I thought she would hate me by now. I know Joe is saying something to me but I’m totally ensnared by Lisa; she’s changed too. Her hair cascades around her with curls and I want to bury my hands and face in it. She’s wearing a cute jeans skirt that shows off her long legs which I want wrapped around me, how many times have I dreamed about the silky feel of them? Her blouse is almost see through and the silhouette of her bra teases my eyes, making me ache to taste her nipples again. I’m getting hard and I haven’t even gotten close to her yet.
Her eyes break contact with me when someone bumps into her and she turns away threading through the group dancing to Gimme More by Britney Spears. I start to chase after her but Joe restrains me with a hand, “She’s had a hard time moving on, Bobby. Be gentle with her.” I nod acknowledging the statement but it doesn’t stop me, I physically need to hold her. I follow her and see she’s talking to Debbie; I’ll be hearing from Jimmy about this, I promised him I wouldn’t get anywhere near Lisa but I can’t help myself.  I step closer to her and turn her around running my hands down her arms, “Hey beautiful,” I say as I try to draw her into my arms.
She pushes against my chest, “Really Bobby, you just show up here and expect me to just fall into your arms? Sixteen months and not a word. Not even a letter, email, or a damn phone call!”
Stopping her from pulling away I stammer, “I missed you, baby. I just couldn’t be where I was and think about you too.” I pull her into me and lay my cheek against her head. “Please, baby, just let me hold you. I couldn’t stay away from you anymore. I only have two more days before I have to leave again and I want to spend them with you. Let me hold you and just talk to you. I miss your voice and the feel of you in my arms.” Her smell envelopes me and I feel like I’m home.
She’s tense for a few seconds then her arms go around my waist and she presses her whole body against me, “I missed you too.”
I pull away so I can see her face and the tears streaking down her beautiful face kill me. “Don’t cry, baby. I can’t stand it when you cry.” I lower my head to her and ghost my lips against hers. I want to devour her but I need to let her take the lead. She gasps and opens to me and I plunge my tongue in to taste her; beer and mint mix with her unique flavor and my body reacts to the one person who has the power to affect my soul. My heart beats wildly in my chest and my dick fills to the point of pain. I tilt her head to give me better access and the whole room fades into the background. I suck on her lower lip and she moans into my mouth as I bury my hands in her hair. She runs her hands over my chest and I can’t help it as my hand moves to her ass and I grind against her.
My mouth leaves hers and I make my way to her ear, “I need to be alone with you, baby,” I whisper. “Let’s get out of here. My house is so close and there’s no one home.” I pull away and take her hand,  “Will you come with me?”
She nods her head, “I have to tell Jodi though. I’m her ride.”
I look around and Debbie is still standing there, her eyes like daggers,  “Hey Debbie, Lisa and I are going to my house to talk. Can you tell Jodi when you see her?”
Debbie looks at Lisa, “Lisa, you are okay with this?”
Lisa glances back at me with glistening eyes, “Yeah Deb, I won’t be too long. We’ll be at his house. If we’re not back by midnight send one of the guys down to get us.”
Debbie nods and says, “Okay, I hope you know what you’re doing.”
I don’t wait for Lisa to re-think about what’s happening, I grab her hand and drag her behind me to the door. She gasps when the cold air hits her, I should have let her get her coat but stopping now is not an option. I yank her closer to me, surrounding her with my heat as we make our way to my house. I slam the door open and it tries to close on us but I haul her through the opening then press her against it, “Oh God, baby, I’ve missed you so much,” I say lowering my mouth to hers again. My hands on her cheeks holding her in place for my assault, grinding my cock into her, “You are more beautiful than I remember. I just want to be inside of you,” my body is on fire for her.
I pick her up and her legs wrap around me just like I fantasized about before. I want to hold her to me forever but I lower her onto the couch, following her down, bracing myself above her. I look at her below me and think how lucky I am that she didn’t reject me. I wouldn’t have blamed her and I feel like shit that I’m leaving again in two days and don’t have the strength to leave her alone. Her heart is in her eyes and I wonder if she can see the love I hold for only her reflected in my eyes. I can’t stop myself from touching I ease her shirt over her head then take her mouth again before making my way down her throat, over the pulse racing there, along her collarbone as I push the cups of her bra down to release those perfect breasts. I suckle her nipple and my cock jerks in my pants, “I missed the taste of you, baby, no one tastes like you. You are perfect.” I unclasp her bra and pull it off as her breath starts coming in gasps. I’ve made her come with my fingers and mouth but tonight I need to be inside her when she comes. My hand moves down her side and she shivers underneath me, god I love how responsive she is to me. It kills me that I wasn’t her first but I couldn’t take her virginity and leave, what kind of douchebag would that have made me. I drop my hand to her thigh and push up her skirt, her panties are drenched and I can smell her arousal. “God you are so wet for me, baby. I am going to make you come so hard,” I press the palm of my hand against the wet silk. “I need to taste you, baby. I missed having my tongue in you. “
I pull her skirt and panties off she spreads her legs for me and my heart misses a beat, “I almost forgot how beautiful you were.” I lower my head and inhale her scent, so unique to her. I part her folds with my fingers and lave her with my tongue in one long swipe. She arches her back, nearly pushing us both off the couch. I capture her leg and throw it over my shoulder and attack. I suck, lick and nibble on her clit as I ease a finger into her. She calls out my name and I almost come in my pants.
“God you are still so tight, baby. I still wish I was your first,” I confess to her.
“You will be Bobby. Steve and I never got this far,” she says. And just like that it’s like someone threw a bucket of ice water on me. I can’t take her virginity. I’m not asshole enough to make her a hook-up. I stop and look at her, “What do you mean? You guys were together for almost a year.” I don’t understand.
“He wasn’t you. It has always been you, Bobby.”
I sit up. “I can’t be your first, Lisa. I am leaving in two days. I won’t do that to you.”
“But you are the only one I want, Bobby,” Lisa cries. “Please, I want you so much.”
God I want her so much but I can’t, won’t be that guy, “Get dressed, Lisa, we’re going back to the party.” I stand and hold my hand out to her.
“Fuck you asshole! You think you can come back and I won’t be a virgin anymore so it would be ok to fuck me and leave me? That’s why you came back isn’t it? You’re an asshole!” I wince at her words but as much as I want her it wouldn’t be right. I’ve probably just blown any chance at ever having a life with her and my heart is breaking.
Lisa grabs her clothes and gets dressed then stomps to the door. I follow her wanting to be near her even if she hates me.
“Just where do you think you’re going? You need to stay here. You’ve already fucked up my night. The least you could do is let me try to salvage my New Year’s.”
“I just want to make sure you get back okay,” I whisper. There are tears on her cheeks again and I put them there.
“It’s four houses, Bobby. I will be fine but you will always be an asshole.” She turns and walks away from me and I let her. Leaning against the doorframe I can’t believe this night ended any hope I held of future happiness. My heart just left and I’m never getting it back.

Summary:
Leilani’s plan was simple: Return for her father’s wedding, housesit for the happy couple while they went on their honeymoon, then get the hell outta dodge. She’d thought the worst thing would be returning to the town she grew up in (and despised). She was wrong.

A flashflood hits the small town, stranding Firefighter, Ryan, and a few strangers at the local bar. Worst of all, Leilani, his old high school rival – and last night’s scorching one-night-stand – is one of the people stuck in the bar. With waters rising, they need to stick together and wait for rescue.

The power grid’s knocked out, and cell phones aren’t working. When the others panic and leave, Leilani and Ryan are left alone in the dark. Fortunately, words aren’t necessary to keep the former rivals warm. But when they’re forced to leave their refuge, they must cooperate to navigate the flood ravaged town and reach safety.

Rising waters bring them closer together. Rising tempers might tear them apart.

A “heavenly flower” watched him from across the room. Ryan felt the weight of her gaze on him before checking her out more subtly in the mirror behind the small hotel bar. Was it really Leilani, though? By the time he turned to check for sure, she was gone. He shook his head and took another sip of his beer. He tugged at his collar and sent a little hatred at weddings in general. This one wasn’t terrible, less showy than most, though he still had to wear stiff, formal clothes.
Not that his turnouts were comfortable, but at least there was a point to his work gear; it protected him from fires. Nothing protected him from the small talk of the people around him. Yes, it was a nice wedding. Yes, it was amazing how they’d managed to make the room “their own” with only some crepe paper and balloons. No, he wasn’t seeing anyone. Yes, the cucumber sandwiches were delicious. Yes, Mildred’s hat was lovely. No, he wasn’t in a firefighter’s calendar. Yeah, he got the joke about his “pole.” Yes, he was single. No, he wasn’t interested in being set up on a blind date.
He didn’t begrudge good people good things, but it was like life was rubbing his face in the fact he hadn’t found anyone since Melanie had left him just over a year ago. He’d found a lot
of someone’s since her, but a relationship wasn’t something for him. Hell, even Melanie had gotten married.
To the bastard she cheated on him with.
He took another swig of beer, wishing he was somewhere quieter.
He’d met Kyle “Spence” Spencer, four years ago at the twelve-week training program to be a firefighter, and they’d been buddies ever since. They’d saved each other’s lives a couple times, and he was the reason Ryan was sitting in dress pants, dress shirt, and a tie that felt like it was choking him. Ironically, Spence had left his dad’s wedding early to go back to the station, refusing Ryan’s offer to go for him, knowing Ryan had just come off working two twenty-four hour shifts with only ten hours in between. The flu going around was kicking their station in the teeth, and they couldn’t wait until they were only working fifty-six hours a week again.
So here he was at the Spencer wedding. And—duh—that “flower” he’d thought he’d seen. Yeah, it had to be Leilani. Spence’s little sister wouldn’t have missed her father’s nuptials. They just looked so different.
Kyle’s sister. His buddy Kyle’s little sister. His co-worker and buddy Kyle’s off-limits little sister.      He hadn’t seen her since he graduated high school—two classes ahead of her—but oh, how she’d grown up.
Still, Spence’s sister was off-limits, even though he’d known her since she was a varsity cheerleader, and he’d been the star quarterback, adored by everyone. He’d played football because he was good at it and it was an easy ride—not because he really loved the game. He’d gotten a full scholarship to college, but had no interest in going pro. He’d wanted to do something with his life. Not like it had done him any good in the present. He was still going home to an empty house—
unless he took someone warm and wild home with him. If Leilani wasn’t his best friend’s sister, they’d be in his truck now.
Instead, he sat watching happy couples do the chicken dance. It was definitely time to go. He hadn’t expected to have a family at this point, but he’d thought at twenty-six he’d have found the woman he wanted to spend the rest of his life with. It certainly hadn’t been Melanie, no matter how badly he’d wanted it to be.
He slid from his stool. Hard work and hot sex were all he wanted. Screw marriage and commitment. They just complicated things. He was good at no strings. He was good at setting a woman’s senses on fire with pleasure and fine with the one-and-done kind of mindless sex.
And maybe that was all he was good for.

Mending Heartstrings by Aria Glazki

Title: Mending Heartstrings
Author: Aria Glazki
Published by: Swoon Romance
Publication date: December 2nd 2014
Genres: Adult, Romance

Summary:
Kane’s a country singer who’s tangled with too many deceitful women. He’s learned his lesson: girls are for flirting and fun; emotions are for his music. But after spending a night with an earnest woman unlike any he’s known, he can’t force her out of his mind. So he goes in search of the woman he knows only as “Elle.”

On her last night in Nashville, the staunchly pragmatic Sabella found herself in a situation more suited to a romance novel than reality. Swept away, she ignored her rigidly self-imposed rules, succumbing to the fantasy just this once. But she knows real-world relationships have nothing in common with their fictionalized portrayals. When Kane unexpectedly shows up at her Portland apartment, she must choose between the practical truths she has learned and the desire for a passionate love she has struggled to suppress.

Despite the distance, Kane’s tour schedule, and their meddling friends, both are drawn to the chance for a romance neither quite believes is possible.

Kane rested his forearms on the bar and bent his head down, exhaling. As always, he’d scanned the audience a few times while he played, trying to read the room’s reactions. Tonight, too many people had been absorbed in their own conversations around the bar’s simple wooden tables. Only one pair of eyes had met his. A striking, unwavering pair of eyes. She’d been standing toward the back, alone. He’d felt her watching him even when he’d closed his eyes.
But she hadn’t been standing there when he’d come back out. Probably just as well.
Cody set down a chilled beer in front of Kane. He tipped it toward the bartender as thanks. A couple drinks, a little bit of flirting, and there’d be no more need to think about his songs tonight.
Turning back toward the room, Kane bumped a girl he hadn’t noticed seated next to him at the bar. “Ah! Sorry ’bout that,” he said with a half-smile, ramping up the charm.
She twisted toward him. “I’ll survive.” The corners of her mouth pulled up, but Kane couldn’t look away from her eyes. Hazel, he realized. Unlike when he’d been on stage, her gaze fell, and she started to turn back to the bar.
“Kane,” he offered, shifting his beer to his left hand and offering up his right. A handshake. Smooth. This really was an off night.
Her eyes flicked down to his hand then laughingly back to his face. Her eyebrows drew up in a small challenge as she placed her hand in his. “Like the sugar, or the stick?”
“With a K …” He leaned back against the bar, resting on one elbow.
“So, not Abel’s brother. Good to know.”
Normally he’d have walked away at a line like that, but it wasn’t like he’d been offering conversational gold. Maybe this would help him shake it off before he made his move on the trio Cody’d pointed out. And then there were those eyes … “Go ahead and joke. I’ve probably heard them all.”
“Don’t tempt me.” Her lips curved softly. Mischief glinted in her eyes.
“And how could I do that?” Kane let himself relax, sliding back into the easy feel of the bar. Unlike his performance, this conversation didn’t really matter.
“I’m sure you have a few tricks up your sleeves.” She picked up the glass of white wine she’d been nursing and took a sip, without dropping her smile or taking her eyes off him.
A local girl would’ve been drinking beer. But then, a local girl would’ve known exactly who he was, which could lead to nothing more than a mildly satisfying romp in the sack. He remembered his own beer and took a swig.
“Worried?” he asked, after she set her glass back down.
That got him a bigger smile. “Please, I can take anything you throw at me.”
“Maybe we should test that theory.” He took another sip of beer. This was getting more and more interesting.
“By all means,” she replied, not missing a beat.
He was used to women flattering him, fawning over him. His Southern charm had rarely failed him, and as a singer, he wasn’t hurting for female attention, especially since country music wannabes thought he’d be a perfect springboard for their careers. But he hadn’t met someone who actually intrigued him in a while. Too long.
He turned to face her, leaving his elbow resting on the bar, and set down his beer. “I didn’t catch your name.”
“Call me Elle,” she answered, tilting her head slightly, a silent question on the change in direction.      Her eyelashes didn’t flutter with calculated coyness, and her direct gaze didn’t falter.
Kane straightened, suddenly inspired. “Pleased to meet you, Elle. Excuse me a sec?” He grabbed the bottle he’d just set down and turned away from her. Another swig and he returned to the back room. This was nothing short of crazy, but he picked up his guitar anyway and walked back to the small stage.

Author Bio:
Aria Glazki's writing story started when her seventh-grade English teacher encouraged her to submit a class assignment for publication. That piece was printed, and let's just say, she was hooked!

Since then, Aria has run a literary magazine, earned her degree in Creative Writing (as well as in French and Russian literatures), and been published in a few collections. Though her first kiss technically came from a bear cub, and no fairytale transformation followed, Aria still believes magic can happen when the right people come together - if they don't get in their own way, that is.

Other than all things literary, Aria loves spending time with her family, including her two unbearably adorable nieces. She also dabbles in painting, dancing, playing violin, and, given the opportunity, Epicureanism.
