Rosa: Hi! I’m Rosa. I’m 15 years old and a sophomore in high school. I’m your typical teenager—well, almost. I don’t have many friends anymore, but it’s hard to blame the other kids. If I was them, I’d probably steer clear of me too, at least most of the time. No one is ever mean to me; I’ve grown up with most of them, and on my bad days, they try to ignore me. My daily life consists of trying to pass all my classes, getting a date for school dances, and dealing with Nana’s gift nearly every day while I try not to lose my mind.

Tut: My name is Nebkheperure Tutanhkame. I ascended the throne of Egypt upon the death of my father, Pharaoh Akhenaten. There has been much speculation in modern day on my death. My concern is finding the final resting place of my beloved queen, Ankhesenamun and making right that which was wronged centuries ago.

1. What is the biggest influence/interest that brought you to this genre?
Working with my students. Over the years I’ve run into readers of all types. The ones who fascinated me weren’t the ones who read everything in sight, but the ones who could read but chose to spend their time doing other activities. It was only when we started our Arthurian Legend unit and read the stories from the ancient worlds that these kids sat up, picked up the books, and actually read. So now I write Arthurian Legend for ages 9-13 and ancient tales for ages 12+. It’s my hope to entice these reluctant readers early on in exploring books.

2. When writing a book, what is your favorite part of the creative process(outline, plot, character names, editing, etc)?
Editing is my favorite part. My first draft is just a rough outline of the story I’m creating. The subsequent drafts bring life to my characters and story.

3. When reading a book, what genre do you find most interesting/intriguing?
I love international spy thrillers. This goes back to my first read of Robert Ludlum’s The Bourne Identity so long ago. His books are ones that I reread often.

4. If you could co-author with any author, past or present, who would you choose?
That’s a tough one. I think maybe Shakespeare—the twists and turns in his plays were masterpieces. I emolated his technique in my 2nd Arthurian tale: Young Knights of the Round Table: The King’s Ransom. Took a lot of planning and changing, but the twists and turns came off quite well.

5. Have you always wanted to write or did it come to you later in life?
I’ve written or made up stories since I was a kid. Over the years, I tried my hand at romances that will never ever see the light of day! Just not comfortable with that genre. Once I knew what I wanted to write, I just built those stories in my head until I had the time to write them out. That wasn’t until I retired from teaching in 2007.

I am a retired high school English teacher. A devourer of books growing up, my profession introduced me to writings and authors from times long past. Through my studies and teaching, I fell in love with the Ancient and Medieval Worlds. Now, I hope to inspire young readers to read more through my Quest Books set in these worlds.

“And what keeps you up at night?” he asked huskily, watching her blush again at the sexual undertones of his question.

He could feel her eyes watching him as they walked out the front door, and it took absolutely all of his strength not to look back.

I caught sight of his cut, thought a moment, and swam away. He floated there, treading water and wondering what would happen next. At that point, his face conveyed the pain in his side. I watched an intense sting replace what I knew of the original burning sensation of a coral abrasion, and the open wound spilled into the ocean at a steady pace.

Conceivably, I had underestimated the severity of the cut. Maybe the coral cut deeper than I thought. The blood clouded the water surrounding him, and now the problem remained of how to take the injured man across the reef without doing further damage. We still needed to cross at least two miles and climb a rocky beach. Or did we?

Before he had time to contemplate any other option, I approached him from below. I swam up to him slowly, and he did nothing. He didn’t dive to meet me or attempt to swim away. He hung vertically in the water, waiting.

He must have felt me before he could clearly see me. The water shifted as I neared, my physicality changing the flow of the ocean around me. He knew I was there, but he didn’t dive below. Was he afraid? Too hurt to move? Instead, he stayed still, moving as little as possible, allowing my approach, and keeping the blood loss at a minimum.

I moved below him and then up, along his body, until my head emerged from the inky blue water and he stared into my eyes. He let out a fast gasp and quickly sank below the surface.

What is your favorite mermaid story or myth?
Growing up in New England, it seems all stories were about the ocean. I know it is cliché, but I remember sitting on my grandmother’s porch, looking at the water, and wondering if Marina, the “real” little mermaid was actually out there. I guess she started it all for me.

What was the inspiration for your mermaid novella?
I spend a lot of time down in Vero Beach, FL where my sister lives, and since it is on the Treasure Coast there are plenty of stories about buried and found treasure. I wanted to mix pirates with mermaids, and while I didn’t quite do that here, this leads into the next book in my series, The Mark of the Mermaid, which does just that.

Cast your characters. If your novella was made into a movie, who would play your main characters?
Anya would be a Drew Barrymore type, independent and a bit silly. I could see her tripping in front of Luke and just laughing it off. Luke, well, I wrote him with the surfer version of Matthew McConaughey in mind. Focused and fun, at home in the water, and cut!

What was most challenging thing writing about mermaids?
The challenge was determining how much time to put them on land. It isn’t easy to offer mermaid human interaction in the middle of the ocean, so you need a plausible world where they walk on land.

Ursula or Ariel?
Ariel’s curiosity, but not her “sell my soul” naiveté.

What else should we know about your novella?
It’s my first! I have plenty more in the works, but I’m busy reveling in this one right now.

Carrie L. Wells crosses genres, writing everything from newspaper editorials and textbooks to paranormal romance novellas.      I heard her nagging the moment I entered the house.
     “The way you boys mistreat your bodies, I just can’t get over it. Mason at least only has one tattoo.” Grandma always found a way to tell us we were doing everything wrong.
     “Nope, got four. Three are just in places I only allow Kelly to enjoy,” Mason clarified.
     “Don’t forget about his piercings. He has a couple of those.” Max had found a way to keep the attention off himself. “What piercings?” my mother and Granny E said in unison.
     “Another place only Kelly is allowed to enjoy.” Mason seemed so refined and straitlaced. No one would expect him to have his junk pierced. Now the secret was out.
     “Max, I would expect it from you or even Tanner, but Mason?” my mother announced. We had just rounded the corner, and Lily snickered at her comment.
     “What the hell?” I asked. “I’m not even here sixty seconds and somehow I’m already being talked about.”
     My mom smiled as she stood from the couch and pulled me in for a hug. “What took you so long?” she asked.
     I tilted my head to the side, motioning to Lily. “Lil couldn’t decide what to wear. I told her she     looked beautiful in anything, but she didn’t believe me.” Lily had finally decided on a pale blue dress, which brought out the color of her eyes. It was conservative and covered entirely too much in my opinion, but I knew she was worried about her first impression on Granny.
     My mother’s gaze shifted to Lily. “Well hello, sweetheart, I’m glad you’re here,” she said as she hugged her. I loved how accepting and welcoming my mother was. She was an amazing woman.
     I looked up just in time to see my grandma analyzing Lily from across the room. Her eyes softened from their usual judgmental haze. She took a few steps in our direction, and I held my breath, praying, hoping she’d keep her judgments to herself. I was more than positive I would not be able to hold my tongue if she said something out of line.
     “Who is this beautiful young woman?”
     Well suck me dry. I think I heard someone quietly whisper, “What the fuck?” I was sure it came from one of my brothers.
     “I’m Edna, honey, and what’s your name?’ she asked Lily.
     I think Lil was just as shocked as everyone else. I had prepped her for the cranky version of Granny. Nowhere in that conversation had I mentioned the woman that now stood before us.
     The room was full of open-mouthed, mesmerized, yet confused people.
     “Lily.” Her shaky voice came out barely above a whisper.
     “Well, Lily, it is nice to meet you. Come with me. Let’s go get us some tea.” She hooked her arm through
     Lily’s and led her toward the kitchen.
     Silence set in as we all watched the two of them walk away. Lily never looked back. In fact, you could hear her soft laughter as they stepped out of sight.
     “You remind me a lot of myself when I was younger,” Edna said, her voice fading down the hall.
     Ah, hell no, Lily was nothing like Granny. She was sweet and kind. So far from Edna and her bat-shit crazy ways.
     “Dude,” Max grunted. “Your girl has tamed the crazy ol’ lady. That thought should scare the shit out of you.”
     Everyone including my father was shocked. Shit like that never happened. Granny E never found anyone she didn’t have some sort of complaint about.

I enjoy happy endings in my love stories. Loving those scenes that give it the needed angst and heat to keep you hooked and wanting more. Just enough drama to make her heart race and your stomach flutter. I haven't always been a lover of Romance and had once been addicted to a good Mystery. Just recently I have taken on a new liking and now I am addicted to Romance Novel.
