“Dad?”

Seth felt a small hand touch his shoulder. Curled up on his right side, Seth opened his eyes and saw no one. Sleep tugged at him, and he closed his eyes again.

“Dad? It’s Lizzie.”

Seth sat up in bed. Lizzie was his eldest daughter, from his crazy first marriage. She reentered Seth’s life when she was six months pregnant with her stepfather’s child. Seth blinked. Even in the dim light, he could tell that she was well. He smiled at her.

“What?” Lizzie asked.

“In this light . . .,” Seth said. “You look like my mother.”

“Is that a good thing?” Lizzie asked. Self-conscious, she tucked a piece of perfectly coifed blond hair behind her ear.

“A very good thing,” Seth said. He realized he was naked. “I’m sorry, Lizzie. Would you mind . . .”

Lizzie nodded and turned around. Seth went to the closet and pulled on jeans.

“Okay,” Seth said.

He pulled a white undershirt over his head. She helped him get the shirt over his bandaged arm.

“What’s going on?” Seth asked.

“It’s Julie Ann,” Lizzie said. Tears appeared in her eyes.

“What’s Julie Ann?” Seth asked about his second daughter from his crazy first marriage.

Julie Ann was on active duty with the US Marine Corps. Seth grabbed a collared shirt. With Lizzie’s help, he put it on over the T-shirt.

“Her team was overcome by the Taliban,” Lizzie said. “They’ve taken heavy casualties. She’s been injured. According to the phone call, she’s expected to reach Kabul by nightfall. She’ll be evacuated to Germany.”

“Did they say how bad it was?” Seth asked as he threaded a belt through the loops in his jeans.

“They don’t know,” Lizzie said. “Bad, I guess. I tried to look it up online but . . .”

“Who called you?” Seth asked.

“Oh, Dad, I don’t know,” Lizzie said. “I can never keep track of that stuff — some military something or another — and when he told me about Jules, I . . . He said that he couldn’t find you, so he called me. Schmidty and I took the first plane to Denver to be here to tell you in person. The man said it would be a miracle if Julie Ann survived. I thought you’d want to go there.”

Lizzie came to him, and he put his arms around her. Over her shoulder, he tried to work it out. He felt moisture from her tears through his shirt.

“Where’s your husband?” Seth asked. “Where’s Schmidty?”

“He had some business with that R and B guy,” Lizzie said. “He dropped me off here so we could have some time alone.”

Lizzie looked at him with hurt eyes.

“Don’t you want to share this with me?” Lizzie asked. “Julie Ann . . .”

Lizzie’s eyes traveled over Seth’s face.

“What is it?” Lizzie asked. Her soft, sad voice shifted to steel. “What did I do?”

“Nothing,” Seth said, with a shake of his head.

“Dad?” Lizzie asked.

“Julie Ann isn’t in Afghanistan,” Seth said. “I talked to her last weekend. She’s learning to fly UAVs at a base in North Dakota. Grand Rapids, I think, but she wasn’t able to tell me.”

“Why didn’t she tell me?” Lizzie asked.

“It’s classified,” Seth said.

“What the fuck is going on?” Lizzie asked, and then she gasped. “They wanted to know where you were!”

The final book in the Brodie Saga

The Disappearance of Catherine Brodie
Prologue
Patrick Chambers
July, Ten Years Ago
Brighton
Patrick panicked quietly in the corner of the waiting area. He was going out of his mind with worry, the hearing had been taking so long. His father had been in the meeting room for four hours and no one had left or entered during that time. His mother’s nerves were so fraught she couldn’t leave the house. His sister preferred to be at the courthouse to hear the outcome of the public case against the hospital. He wanted to be there for his dad to hear the news. Each minute that passed caused his heart to constrict, the beginnings of a headache formed behind his eyes. The hospital board needed to decide his father’s fate, but Patrick believed his father wasn’t to blame. He didn’t do what they were accusing him of, he didn’t kill that boy.

The constant activity in the hospital corridor irritated him, people rushing back and forth to their offices, carrying files and folders. Several people smiled as they passed, he didn’t acknowledge them. Some of the blurred bodies tried to talk to him, but he ignored them. He didn’t care that they wanted to offer support, but he couldn’t hear them. The screaming noises in his head drowned out any words spoken.

He had his back to the door to the conference room when it opened and he spun around. He knocked a young girl off balance in his hurry to get to his father. Patrick grabbed her shoulders to steady her and stalked off in the direction of the open doors. His father stumbled out through the conference room door, his face was ashen, and his eyes glazed over as he clung to the metal frame. He found his balance and strode along the corridor with purpose, ignoring Patrick’s questions about what had happened.

Patrick and his father descended in the elevator in silence, they were not alone. All the passengers squashed in to get to the floor they needed. Patrick kept his eyes on his dad who ended up on the opposite side of the small box elevator. He didn’t let him out of his sight as his father bolted as soon as the door opened. Patrick chased him down the corridor and out into the sunshine, his father advanced around the building towards the car park, ignoring his pleas to stop. Finally, Patrick’s father came to a stop at his car, and he stood there squinting, blinking rapidly.

“What did they say, dad? What’s happening?” Patrick asked frantically. He circled around his father’s body to stand in front of him, and they were eye to eye. He had aged mentally ten years in the last six months, he wished he was still the foolish, naive nineteen-year-old he was six months ago. Patrick may have equalled his dad’s height, but he was no match in stature. Patrick was skinny and awkward and his father was tall, broad and foreboding. At this moment, his youthful features had aged, with his shoulders sagging in defeat. Patrick placed his hands on his dad’s shoulders and gave him a little shake. He lifted his head, looked him straight in the eyes and told him what they said.

The news shocked Patrick, genuinely stunned, he had an unpleasant taste in his mouth, his family would never be the same again and there was only one person to blame.

Making the Pass by Cheryl Dragon
Aiden Brewer kept his eye on the ball and the field. The last summer wind blew over his arms as the evening brought cooler temps to the New England football field. It was just a practice so the stands were empty and after he’d bruised his ribs in the last game, Aiden wasn’t pushing too hard. Looking over at Jack Allman eased the pain with a jolt of lust. A field full of hot men and Aiden had to want the one who showed no real interest. They were friends but not really that close.

It made Aiden nuts. Especially when he had to target Jack with the ball. The wide receiver had good hands and fast feet. He also had sexy boy-next-door looks on an athletically muscled body with buzzed reddish brown hair. His chest hair tempted Aiden even more. Those deep brown eyes of his never missed a thing in the locker room.

Aiden had to lead and shook off the fantasy of tackling Jack naked. Facing the same direction, Jack squatted a few feet away. Aiden was always aware of where Jack was since passing the football to Jack was Aiden’s job. As he reached for the ball, Aiden swore Jack was looking at him.

Ignoring Jack, Aiden took off and ran the play. He found Jack down the field and hurled the ball with precision. His ribs screamed and Aiden held his side. His teammates didn’t tackle him and Paul came over. Aiden watched Jack’s strong body power down the field and make a touchdown. His ass looked so good in that uniform, Aiden wondered if he’d ever get over the friend who seemed oblivious.

"You okay?" Paul asked.

"Just the ribs. Damn, still sore." He tried to shake it off.

"You’re thirty. You’re not going to bounce back like those wild twenties anymore." Paul patted him on the back.

"I just didn’t want to sit it out." Aiden shrugged.

"Why not? You won’t turn rusty in a week." Despite Paul being a good friend, Aiden didn’t want to hear it.

Aiden nodded to the other end of the field. "Jack as usual. Being a dick."

"He said something?" Paul asked.

"In the locker room. He’s two years older but no sympathy." Aiden knew Jack’s job was more physical. The advantage of having more muscle was all with Jack, at least for muscle and power. The perfect throws were Aiden. The engineer had to hit his mark.

"You should just freak him out. Kiss him or something. I bet that’d solve a lot of problems," Paul teased.

Aiden shook his head. "I’m not being the butt of more of his jokes. The guy has it in for me."

"Not how you think," Paul said.

That train of thought would only get Aiden into trouble. Jack could take the teasing if Aiden chose to dish it back.

The assistant coach blew his whistle and the team headed in. "Good job. Hit the showers. Aiden, don’t push it next practice. Rest the ribs so you’re good for the game. Sitting out one won’t kill you."

"Sure." Aiden pulled off his helmet.

"But hit the gym so you stay loose." Jack grinned as they walked towards the showers.

"You’re the coach now too? Why don’t you just pass yourself the ball?" Aiden shot back.

The team laughed and headed for the showers. Aiden knew his banter with Jack was expected. Theduo always delivered. He found Jack and Jack somehow managed to outrun the tight end and nab the pass. They were connected and the team counted on them. Plenty of guys gave them crap about being a couple. Practising at home and on the side—Aiden wished!

He was last in the steam-filled college locker room. The facilities were updated and well-maintained. He sat on the extra-wide bench down the middle of the rows of lockers. There was no rush. As annoying as Jack could be, Aiden hated leaving the games and practices.

Paul helped him get the pads off to spare his ribs. When the material cleared his head, Aiden caught Jack watching. The man was nuts! Running his mouth and then acting jealous. Paul was a friend and had eyes for that kicker on the Griffins’ rival team. Aiden hated to turn the tables of teasing on Paul, but it’d work.

Crossing the Line by Megan Slayer
How come the right fit is never there when you want it?

Ryan Malone sighed and pressed the last glazing point into place. He wished he was working on one of his paintings rather than framing artwork for the local high school. The man in the painting stirred something deep within him, something exciting and unattainable. He tapped the point into the frame, double-checked the fit.

The man in the painting wasn’t just any guy. No, Paul Toth surpassed most men. Gifted in the art classroom and smooth in social situations, he turned heads with his effortless style. Ryan flipped the painting over. Staring at Paul for the last two months had seared his visage into Ryan’s memory. The guy had grace and damn was he cute. Brown eyes with just a hint of wonder. Thick, dark brown hair combed like he’d just walked out of a salon…and that body…Muscles where a man should be sculpted, but not boxy or bulky.

Thank God Ryan had closed his office door. Anyone passing by would’ve seen the bulge in his pants. On the outside, Paul embodied everything Ryan wanted in a man.

"But he plays for the other team," Ryan said to himself. His phone beeped, reminding him of his appointment with the principal. "I haven’t met with a principal since I was in school." He chuckled. Thinking about school didn’t make him feel much better.

He wrapped the artwork in butcher paper, then grabbed his keys. Thirty minutes later he stood outside Northwood High School. He pressed the button to lock his Jeep.

Just take the painting in, he probably won’t be there. Ryan gripped the painting and strode into the foyer. Northwood happened to be the home of the soon-to-be-named Teacher of the Year, aka Paul Toth. He pushed the second door handle, but nothing happened.

"We need to buzz you in," came a voice over the loudspeaker.

Ryan cringed. He hated being caught off guard. "I’m Ryan Malone, here with the Teacher of the Year painting."

"Very good," the woman said. "Door’s open."

Ryan headed to the office. The quicker he made his delivery, the sooner he’d be able to leave. Seeing Paul wouldn’t help things.

"Mr Malone."

Ryan grinned at the principal. "Hello, Mr Laubenthal. I have the painting."

"Perfect." George Laubenthal rubbed his meaty hands together. His salt-and-pepper eyebrows bobbed and his moustache twitched. "It’s been eating Toth alive not to be doing this for us this year."

"The painting?" He handed the principal the package. "I know he teaches art, but I wasn’t sure if he created the portraits."

"Yes. Mr Toth has painted the last four winners. I couldn’t exactly have him paint himself. Let’s show the girls in the office." Laubenthal led the way to the main office. "Girls, you’re going to love this."

"Well, we can only hope," Ryan muttered.

"Nan, see if the work room is empty. Don’t want wandering eyes." Laubenthal placed the painting on the nearest desk. His eyes sparkled behind his thick glasses. "I’m excited to see it."

When the secretary came back grinning, George unveiled the painting. He picked at the tape holding the paper closed, then gasped. "This is fantastic." George stepped back from the painting and pulled an envelope from his coat pocket. He handed Ryan the envelope. "That’s for you. Board approved. We truly appreciate it."

Ryan stared at the image of Paul and suppressed a sigh. In the bright light, the highlights in Paul’s dark hair stood out. His brown eyes sparkled with poise and mischief. He’d folded his arms in the photo and Ryan had taken the opportunity to define his biceps a bit more. When he’d created the painting, he hadn’t been able to tear his gaze from Paul’s. Now, seeing the image with others around, Paul took his breath away. Paul embodied control and strength. Ryan forced himself to look away from the image that had haunted his dreams.

"I’m glad you’re happy." Ryan nodded and placed the folded envelope in his back pocket. "I’d love to hang around and gawk at the painting, but I’ve got some other things to attend to so I’ll be going. Thank you for asking me to do this for you."

"I’m glad Professor Pride suggested you." George Laubenthal offered his hand. "I’ve seen your work down at the NEU Galleries. We’re honoured to have a piece here, as well. Thank you."

Ryan shook hands with the principal, then made his way out of the office. Only a few more steps and he’d be back outside in the safety of his Jeep and the seclusion of his office.

Line of Scrimmage by Stephani Burke
"Twenty-seven! Thirty-six! Fifteen—hike!"

In the back of his mind, Dolton heard the words. His blood jumped at the sound of the snap, but his eyes were focused in on his goal.

The quarterback from his rival team, the Rockville Rocs, was going down.

He watched as the quarterback stepped back, looking for a receiver, and Dolton thought to himself, Not today.

He dodged to his left, avoiding the defensive lineman who was attempting to keep the pocket, the grouping of men using their bodies as a wall to protect the quarterback, and neatly slipped in between two of them. He caught a glimpse of movement off to his right, but instead of slowing down, he hunkered lower and kept moving, ploughing everything out of his path. Dolton was not the tallest man on the team but he made his low centre of gravity and his ability to slide through tight spots work for him.

The quarterback never saw what hit him.

"That is a sack, folks, and the end of this game! The play clock has run out and the Griffins have tossed back the Rocs like so much cheap beer!"

Dolton didn’t pay much attention to the announcers or the quarterback who was crushed beneath his weight. His new focus was on a glorious head of blond hair trailing down the back of a gold and black jersey.

Dean Majors, right tackle, all-around good guy and of late, the star of his masturbation fantasies, placed his hands on the ground, his head low and his ass high in the air before he gave up and rolled himself onto his back. Huffing in exhaustion, he extended his right hand up towards Dolton for assistance.

Feeling his heartbeat beginning to race, Dolton reached for the hand, gripping it tightly just as the rest of the team enveloped them, tossing Dolton in the air and yanking his hands from Dean’s grasp.

The disconnection was almost painful.

"Dolton! Dol-ton! Dol-ton!" His name was being chanted as he was carried triumphantly off the field, but Dolton couldn’t resist turning back one more time to stare at the mass of blond hair now revealed fully as Dean pulled off his helmet.

Sparkling blue eyes met his and for a moment, Dolton felt like he had been punched in the chest. But that feeling passed quickly as a brown-haired man enveloped him in a massive hug, lifting him off his feet and spinning him around.

Dolton lost sight of Dean and Robbie as the team carried him into the locker rooms and to the grinning face of their manager Tina Edmonson.

"I am so proud of you," the portly Asian woman chuckled. "So very proud. The Rocs are no pushovers, but you guys handed them their collective asses!"

She paused as more cheering echoed around the state-of-the-art locker room. Dolton was grateful that his university had such a modern place for them to practise and recover. Of course the local weekend league only used the field when the college team wasn’t bent on killing each other to impress the scouts during the season, but it was a privilege for them to be able to use the same equipment and facilities.

"And because you guys did so well, next game we face our rivals the Dragons."

There was good-natured booing and hissing which was more amusing than threatening. If anybody sounded like a bunch of overgrown lizards at the moment, it had to be them.

"So rest up and avail yourselves of the Jacuzzi and steam room if need be, and I will see you all next week to go over strategy and look at film."

There was one final cheer for their totally badass performance on the field and then Tina was slipping out so they could get on with the business of getting clean and comfortable.

And for Dolton that meant looking for Dean and getting as close to him as he could in the showers to get more fodder for his spank bank.

Yes, he was a healthy twenty-nine-year-old and masturbated frequently. He was never ashamed of that particular bodily function and loved to share in the joys of self-love with whomever he was seeing at the time, though right now he wasn’t seeing anyone.

He desired to change that real soon, he reminded himself, as he moved towards his locker and his waiting toiletry kit.

Boomerang by EM Denning

Title: Boomerang
Author: EM Denning
Genre: Adult Romance
Release Date: July 28, 2016
Summary:
Eli Cooper and Violet Holt haven’t gotten along well in the year their parents have been married, so it’s better that they don’t see each other often. After an averted disaster, sparks fly and now Violet can’t get Eli off her mind. Violet only has to avoid him for thirty more days, then she’ll be safely back at college and can focus her energy on her studies, but Eli isn’t so easily ignored.

Eventually, passion flares and they both give into temptation. Only one question remains when it’s over– What do you do when the one person you can’t get over is the one person you’re not supposed to be with?

Three hours until I was on a plane, and my heart was a rock in my chest. Eli and I had avoided each other since the other day after the country club, but not because we suddenly regretted what we’d done. I sighed and shoved another armload of clothes into my suitcase. It would be easier if I regretted it. The problem was I didn’t. I should have, probably, at least a little, but I couldn’t. And I didn’t think he regretted it either. Every time we were alone we stole glances at one another, and when our gazes met, I always felt a shockwave in the deepest parts of myself.

I turned as someone softly knocked on my door.

“Come in.”

My breath caught in my throat when Eli walked into my room. He softly shut the door behind him.

“I wanted to say goodbye.” His voice sounded strained, as if he held back a mountain of emotion.

I tried to force a smile, but it fell flat. “You’ll see me at Thanksgiving.” I tore my gaze away. “I have a lot of packing to do.”

Eli nodded. “I should let you get to it.”

He headed for the door, and I suddenly couldn’t stand the thought of him leaving this room. A stilted goodbye wasn’t how I wanted to leave things between us.

“Eli, wait.” I reached for my sketchbook and flipped to a recent sketch I’d done of him and Boomer. I carefully tore it out. “I want you to have this.” My fingers trembled as I held it out to him.

He took the paper, held it carefully in his fingers. After a long moment, he slowly raised his gaze. “Violet.”

Our resolve collectively crumbled and we took a step toward each other at the same time. Our mouths crashed together, and for thirty or forty of the most delicious seconds I’d ever experienced, we kissed. Nothing else existed. Just his breath, my breath. His lips, his tongue, the way his hand felt as he tenderly cupped the side of my face. I was the first to pull away, though, because this couldn’t go on. This had to stop now, with the end of summer. I’d go to college and get over this, whatever it was. Everything would go back to normal. It had to.

“Goodbye, Eli.” Two words. Four syllables. That was all it took to break my heart.

Eli took a step back and cocked a smile. “See you later, Vi.”

The words came out in his usual careless way, but his smile didn’t reach his eyes, and I saw the sadness in them. He slipped out of the room, and I spent the next few minutes staring at the door. I was completely hollow, numb inside and out. I told myself it would pass. The emptiness would fade and life would go back to normal once I was back on campus.

Sunday's Safe Word Shelf: Reckless by Caitlin Ricci

Summary:
When his best friend, Lee, offered him his sub as part of a bet, Colton Prier never expected more than a clean condo from the boy. But Tate Nicholson is well-trained, eager , and he likes rope play as much as Colton enjoys tying him up. It should have ended after one night, but they begin meeting in secret, and Colton can’t stop thinking about Tate. It’s a betrayal of his friendship with Lee to fall in love with Tate, but Colton can’t help wanting the sub for himself.

He’s not alone in his feelings, either. Tate thought he was happy with Lee. Not completely fulfilled, but happy enough. But as he spends more time with Colton, he realizes Lee isn’t capable of giving him what he wants anyway. Lee demands his full submission, but Tate doesn’t want to be a lifestyle sub. Colton expects his obedience at times but gives him his freedom more often than not, which is more in line with what Tate wants.

When Tate really needs his Dom and Lee isn’t around to help him, he reaches the tipping point and needs to choose who he wants to give his submission to, and to accept the consequences of his choice when he does.

I LOOKED across the crowded nightclub with its flashing purple lights and fake fog to see my friend and co-worker, David, hitting on some guy twice his age with graying black hair and in a well-fitting blue suit. I’d known my friend had developed a thing for bears, but I’d never actually seen him in action before.

The high bar table I sat at rocked as the other man I’d come to the club with, my best friend and other co-worker Lee, joined me. He put down his drink, a whiskey sour from the smell of it, and leaned over toward me until our elbows touched and I felt the sleeve of his heavy wool sweater against the bare skin of my arm. It instantly made me itch and I pulled away.

We crowded together at the small table in the corner with our backs against the wall and our gazes affixed to our friend, who seemed to be doing his best to get a man old enough to be his father to go home with him. That hadn’t been the point in coming here tonight, but seeing David happy was worth it, I supposed. It beat the hell out of listening to him whine about his lackluster sex life since his ex had left him two months before.

“So, Colton, think he has a chance tonight?” Lee asked me. He took a sip of his drink, the ice clinked against the sides of the glass, and then he set it back down.

I shrugged and drank some of my beer. The drink was dark and rich, just how I liked my alcohol, and I could really taste the hops. I’d already made a note in my phone to pick some up on the way home. “Don’t so much care if it keeps him from whining about the breakup.”

Lee chuckled, and someone turned the music up to the point that I could barely hear him anymore. I didn’t mind the music itself—I’d grown up at a time when the classic rock band blasting out of the speakers had been on all the radio stations as new—but the volume was a bit much.

I took a deep breath and wondered how much longer they expected me to stay around as their wingman. That had been the plan until David had gone for the guy in the VIP section and Lee had become more interested in the game playing on the one TV than in the guys dancing around us in one of Dover’s only gay clubs.

I had wanted to get out of my apartment for the evening, but now, sitting here surrounded by people I didn’t really care about or know while my two closest friends ignored me in favor of their own pursuits—now I simply wanted to go home. I’d pick up some of my favorite Italian desserts from the little twenty-four-hour market a few blocks from my apartment before grabbing the beer and heading home to spend the evening by myself with sweets I’d have to run off in the morning and boring television that would likely put me to sleep.

It might have sounded boring to others, but to me that kind of evening was appearing better and better as this night dragged on.

“Think David will manage to get him to go home with him?” Lee nearly yelled at me over the music, which caught the attention of a few people nearby.

I finished off my beer and looked away from where David and his new friend sat together. I saw David put his hand along the man’s stomach and then slide it under the table before I looked away, not all that interested in being a voyeur to a club quickie. Crowded places worked for David; he’d said so more than once. I preferred to keep my relationships, however brief they typically were, as far away from this scene as possible. I wasn’t trolling for ass, as Lee put it, and hadn’t been for some time. The very idea bored me more than I would have liked to admit to anyone but myself. I tried not to lie to myself, but everyone else was fair game as far as I was concerned. Within reason, of course.

“Care to make a bet?” Lee asked, giving my shoulder a hard push with his own.

When the waiter came over and, using a complex system of gestures I understood far better than if he’d tried to yell at me over the music, asked me if I wanted another beer, I shook my head. He nodded and took away my empty bottle. I wouldn’t be staying long enough to enjoy another.

With that taken care of, I turned my attention to Lee, wondering if he wanted to bet on the game or if something else was going on. I rested my chin on my hand and waited for him to explain. When he didn’t appear to get what I was hinting at, I asked him, “Bet on what?”

“David,” he replied, as if the answer should have been obvious to me.

I glanced over at David, checking on him, then turned my attention back to Lee. “What about him?”

“If he’ll leave with the guy.”

I widened my eyes a bit, surprised that Lee had jumped to that. Soccer, football, horse racing, whether or not it was going to rain… these were all perfectly normal things for a competitive gambler like Lee to want to bet on. But whether or not our friend would be getting laid? Now that was a new one, even for him.

But hey, I was game. From what I was seeing, it would be easy money. I wondered if Lee had missed what David was likely still doing with his hand under their table. “Sure. Hundred bucks that he leaves with him.”

Lee grinned at me, and the corners of his mustache, which really should have been trimmed before we’d gone out, curled around his upper lip. “I’ll go with that the guy tells him to screw off. But I’m low on cash.”

“You aren’t driving my car again,” I countered instantly. Lee loved my car, a classic muscle car I’d spent a good year restoring, and the last time I’d let him drive it my beauty had come back with a scratch in the driver’s side door. It was tiny, barely wider than the tip of a pen, but I noticed it, and I hadn’t forgiven him for it yet.

He leaned toward me and dropped his eyelids a bit. It made him look more dangerous than he really was. But I knew that look well enough to know it meant something entirely different. Lee was planning something, and though I would likely enjoy the end consequences of that look, I wasn’t too thrilled to see it because it usually meant danger in some way.

“I have a new sub. You could have him for the weekend. He’s just turned twenty-two and he’s a college student.”

That came as a surprise, and I narrowed my gaze at him. “Didn’t know you got into prostitution.”

I let my disdain for his offer show through. I enjoyed casual sex as much as the next person, but what Lee was offering me was something quite different, and I wasn’t on board with it.

Lee laughed at me and shook his head. He clapped me loudly, and rather rudely, on the back as if it had all just been in good fun. Even if he was joking, I didn’t really like it or approve.

“It’s not like that. Not in the least. But you should see your face right now.”

I raised my eyebrows. “It’s not?”

Lee shook his head. “Not at all. You see, Tate’s been wanting a bit more of what you’re into. It’s all fun and fine when I whip him a bit, but you know I don’t like my boys tied. He knows about your talents already from watching you at the club. I think you might like him. But just for this weekend. You can’t keep him permanently. He’s too sweet for me to just give him to you.”

I shifted my weight in the chair as my cock started to grow hard at just the thought of tying someone up. It was hard to find a good sub in the city. Plenty of guys wanted to try out a bit of kink, but to find someone who actually interested me for more than an hour or two? That was a rare find indeed, and I didn’t expect that from Lee’s sub, though I was curious about a man that would willingly consent to being shared between two Doms.

“If he agrees, and only if, then you have a deal,” I told Lee, hoping that he understood my point. I wouldn’t be playing host to some poor beaten sub who thought he had no choice in the matter. I’d met more than a few of men like that in my time in the BDSM scene and got tired of trying to explain that consent and submission still went together, regardless of anything else that was going on. It was an old conversation and one I didn’t think I should have ever needed to have, but people often seemed to miss that point.

Lee nodded and got out his phone. I didn’t think he’d ask this Tate person while we were still sitting there at the table, but apparently I was wrong as Lee sent off a text. He’d barely started to put the phone away when it beeped and, after reading the message, he looked up at me with a smile. “Tate says he’s free tonight and eagerly awaits the results of the bet.”

I snorted and shook my head. “He did not say that.” Lee held up the phone for me to see, and sure enough those were Tate’s words. All right. So some sub I’d never met was eager to spend the weekend with me. That felt far more odd than I thought it should have, but no matter. I could still lose this bet.

Except as soon as I’d finished that thought I saw David get up and take the man’s hand in his as they walked away from the table where they’d been sitting. A quickie in the bathroom was a possibility, and I hadn’t thought of that. Thankfully for my wallet, though, David took him past the bathrooms and out the club’s backdoor.

Smiling, I turned back to Lee, who was looking like he was seriously rethinking the terms of his own bet as he scowled after David, likely silently blaming our friend for his active libido. “Tell this Tate of yours to show up by ten and either be prepared to cook me dinner or order from the Thai place before he gets to my apartment. They can charge it to my account.”

“David could be in the alley with the guy,” Lee hedged.

I shrugged as I got up from the table and left a ten for the waiter to cover my drink and a tip for him as well. “If he is, that’s not my problem. The bet was that if they left together, I got a weekend with your sub. They left. You never said they had to go somewhere or anything like that. So you lost, and I get dinner and a clean apartment.”

“That’s all you’re going to do with him?” Lee asked me incredulously, as if he couldn’t believe I’d waste a weekend with a sub so easily.

“Maybe.” Honestly I didn’t know yet. Without seeing Tate, without knowing what he was like or anything else about him, I wasn’t pinning down anything too firmly.

Lee threw a napkin at me, and I tossed it back to him before walking out of the club, eager to get out of the noise and purple lights. I had a guest coming over that night which, while not a rare occurrence, wasn’t something that I’d planned on. Thankfully I was a fairly neat person, all things considered, but there was plenty of cleaning that I’d left off to the weekend that Tate could handle: sweeping the hardwood, wiping down the countertops, maybe even dusting.

I spotted David coming out of the alley with the man behind him. David’s jeans were unbuttoned. I waved to him, then touched the front of my own pants, a silent indication to him to fix his own, which he quickly did. If tonight went well and Tate wasn’t a brat, then I’d have to thank David for being so easy to get at a club. It was because of his libido that I was getting some company for the weekend, after all.

I took my time getting home and walked the long way along the pier and down Eighth Street to the bridge, where the people selling roses to couples walking along High Street were starting to pack up. In the summer they’d be out later, but in March they went home before it became too cold. I flipped up the collar of my long coat and kept walking, the sound of the water along my left and the lights of the upscale restaurants on my right.

My watch read nearly nine o’clock by the time I picked up the beer and headed home with my sweets in one hand and the beer in the other. I had to put the six-pack down in order to unlock the front door of my apartment but quickly picked it up. I got the door open and stepped into my large two-bedroom apartment. I enjoyed living life in an apartment, though my mother disapproved. I made enough as an accountant owning my own firm with David and Lee to afford a house on the edges of the city with a yard, a two-car garage, and the picket fence she’d always pictured me with, likely with a wife and a couple of children by my side. Her trying to understand me had gotten old in high school, and since college we’d barely spoken.

I didn’t mind the separation now as much as I used to. Family was the people I kept close to me, not the ones I forced myself to call on their birthdays and then ignored the rest of the year. I hung my coat up in the hall closet and put away my groceries before walking into my bedroom. I was a neat person by nature, so there was nothing to straighten up or be embarrassed about before Tate came over. I gave my bedroom with its pale creams and deep greens a simple once-over before I took off my shoes so that I could put them on the shelf in my closet.

Next I walked to my dresser and the little quartz bowl I kept on top of the polished mahogany. My cuff links were carefully snapped off and dropped in there. I removed my tie and hung it up next to the full-length mirror in front of the entrance to my closet.

I wouldn’t get too comfortable, not like I would have if I wasn’t expecting company. But I could still undo the top few buttons of my dark blue dress shirt and roll the sleeves up to my elbows. Before I left my bedroom I opened the curtains so that I could see the city. I may have only been on the second floor, but there was a hill below my apartment building, so the view I saw out of the windows behind my bed was comparable to that of people who lived on the tenth floor of most apartment buildings in the little valley below mine.
