Title: Carry Me Home

Genre: Young Adult, Contemporary, Thriller
Release Date: September 26, 2017
Publisher: Acorn Publishing
Summary:
“A riveting page-turner… Jessica Therrien broke my heart into a million pieces — and then put it back together again. This book will haunt and uplift readers long after they turn the last page.” -KAT ROSS, best-selling author of The Midnight Sea

CARRY ME HOME is a fictional novel inspired by the true story of a teenage girl’s involvement in several Mexican gangs in San Jose and Los Angeles. The members of her crew call her, Guera, Spanish for “white girl” and it doesn’t take long for her to get lost in their world of guns and drugs.

* * *

Lucy and Ruth are country girls from a broken home. When they move to the city with their mother, leaving behind their family ranch and dead-beat father, Lucy unravels.

They run to their grandparents’ place, a trailer park mobile home in the barrio of San Jose. Lucy’s barrio friends have changed since her last visit. They’ve joined a gang called VC. They teach her to fight, to shank, to beat a person unconscious and play with guns. When things get too heavy, and lives are at stake, the three girls head for LA seeking a better life.

But trouble always follows Lucy. She befriends the wrong people, members of another gang, and every bad choice she makes drags the family into her dangerous world.

Told from three points of view, the story follows Lucy down the rabbit hole, along with her mother and sister as they sacrifice dreams and happiness, friendships and futures. Love is waiting for all of them in LA, but pursuing a life without Lucy could mean losing her forever.

Ultimately it’s their bond with each other that holds them together, in a true test of love, loss and survival.

“You ready for this, Guera?” he asks.

It’s a test, Guera. Only thing I can say is you’re allowed to fight back. Take ‘em out with everything you got.

I’d heard of people being jumped into a gang before, maybe it was Rosa who told me about it. As the girls start to descend from their spots around the room, slowly closing in like encircling wolves, I know what’s about to happen.

The realization takes hold in my chest, a quick plunge of the heart into an icy lake of fear. I back away slowly out of instinct, ready to run, but there’s nowhere to go. The sound of their skittering feet is the first thing I hear before they come at me. Me against all of them. Me against Rose Tattoo and Cigarette Twins. Me against the jealous novias. Ten sets of eyes glinting with the thrill of a fight. I flinch and turn my back to avoid the fists, but they’re all around me. One of them catches me by the shoulders, holding me in place as the other girls hit the back of my skull. My head flies forward, chin to chest.

At first I don’t know whether to swing or cover. I reach up to protect myself, but there are too many points of contact. The rush of adrenaline is intense. It blocks the pain, but there is a fiery need in me to get away. I try and kick or punch, feeling one or two connect, but the girls are everywhere. An elbow slams against my temple. My head splits and my ears ring. I go down.

Every infinite minute of being the enemy feels like it’ll never end.

Someone’s shoe stomps my thigh. Others strike my ribs. I heave and gag until I can’t breathe. But that kind of terror turns me into a resilient kind of crazy. The kind of rabid-mad that is born of desperation. I scrape and flail until I’m on my feet, pulling hair and swinging my fists, making contact with whatever I can. I don’t realize I’m screaming until ToΓ±o calls them to a stop.

It ceases the moment the girls hear his voice, and I’m left there shaking and crazed, my breath dragging in and out of my lungs in a feverish effort to return to its normal rhythm. I pant and cry, as softly as I can, but it’s hard to deny my body the relief of all-out sobbing. My head hurts. My brain smashes against my skull with the pulse of too much pressure. I taste blood in my mouth, though no one has touched my face. Now that it’s over, the pain of it all rushes to the surface and makes me want to vomit. I feel like I could die.

Why am I here? Why am I doing this?

“She’s in,” ToΓ±o says, and the cheers of the group shock my senses and make me tense up.

They all rush me, and at first I’m terrified it’s about to start again, but instead they hug me and pat me on the shoulder all at once. Each hand on my back or squeeze around the shoulders rocks me with pain, but they’re so happy. Their laughter and cheering is contagious, it flows into me, filling me with a strange sense of pride and belonging. I can’t help my smile when I see their encouraging faces. I even start to laugh.

Blogger Review: The Hanged Man's Hero by Summer Devon

Summary:
Condemned for murder, Dez Moore awaits the hangman’s noose. Though he killed to defend a woman, the court shows no mercy, and, resigned, he attempts to make amends with his estranged sister. His letter bidding his sister good-bye falls into the wrong hands, and suddenly, he is facing another future—one that may exist, thanks to a man he doesn’t know.

Once a poor mudlark, Carl Reis is a powerful businessman with an erratic impulse to save desperate people. When Dez’s letter comes to him, he takes an interest in the prisoner. But the charming and disruptive Dez Moore proves to be more attractive than any of his other rescues. He stirs urges Carl has long suppressed, and makes him yearn for a future even he could not foresee. One with the lively Mr. Moore by his side and in his bed.

Long used to doing for others—some might say controlling them--while maintaining his solitary existence, Carl struggles to keep Dez from breaching his walls. But the tenacious Dez will do all it takes to capture his rescuer’s heart.

πŸ’¦This is an expanded version of The Scent of Hope, a goodreads free read.πŸ’¦

Dez Moore is waiting for his date with the hangman but would like to see his sister one last time.  Carl Reis receives a letter not intended for him but once he reads it, his desire to help overtakes his time.  Will Carl be able to break Dez's date with the noose?

It's heartwarming to discover that postal delivery is just as reliable today as it was back then πŸ˜‰ but then again maybe fate had a hand in the mix-up, but whatever brought it about, when Carl receives a letter meant for Dez's sister lives are changed forever.  As for the sister, I am an only child but I can't imagine turning my back on my brother as she has but I also am not living in that time with the moral views of the era so who knows how I would have reacted in the situation but my heart broke for Dez. When we meet Carl he may be living a solitary existence on a personal level but he has quite an interesting crew around him at work, whether they consider themselves employees, assistants, or friends doesn't really matter because they have his back whatever their label.

I understand that this is an expanded version of a previous Goodreads free read, The Scent of Hope but I never read that so I can't speak to how much of an expansion this is but The Hanged Man's Hero is a brilliant read.  There is a little bit of everything here: romance, humor, drama, and a healthy dose of lust wrapped in a big beautiful historical bow that one comes to expect from Summer Devon and her obvious respect for the era.  It's one of those tales that even though you pretty much know how it's going to end up, the journey getting from point A to point Z is what really will get the blood pumping.

Release Blitz: First Season by RJ Scott & VL Locey

Title: First Season
Authors: RJ Scott & VL Locey
Series: Harrisburg Railers #2
Genre: M/M Sports Romance
Release Date: September 27, 2017
Cover Design: Meredith Russell
Summary:
Layton wants success, Adler wants family, how can love make both these things possible?

Layton Foxx works hard for what he has. The condo, the career, the chance to make his mark, is all down to the sacrifices he has made. With tragedy in his past, he doesn’t want or need love. Then he meets Adler Lockhart, the extroverted, sexy winger for the Harrisburg Railers and abruptly he can’t avoid love even if he wanted to.

Adler Lockhart has had everything handed to him his whole life. Cars, villas, cash, college tuition at the finest Ivy League schools. The only things he doesn’t have are parents who care or the love of a good man. Then Layton walks into his privileged life and shows him what real love can be like.

“Guys,” I said calmly, even though the sight of these big men waiting by my car was enough to have me feeling anxious as memories of old times poked at me. Not to mention that Stan had his thick arms crossed over his chest and looked like he wanted to go to war with me. I recognized two of the others with him—Coach Benning looking grim, Arvy grinning at me—and the other man was the guy from the bathroom.

That was Adler, the one the captain, in my interview with him that morning, had chosen to highlight as “not exactly vocally critical nor entirely supportive.”

I was scarlet and I knew it, and Adler smirked at me. Asshole.

He wasn’t the first person to smirk at me, and he wouldn’t be the last. Adler Lockhart was a good-looking man, but then a lot of the players on this damn team were hot and right on to burning. Take Arvy with his goofy smile and his long wavy hair, or Coach Madsen with his intense blue stare and air of authority.

“Little bit talk,” Stan said, his voice loud and booming in the cavernous underground parking.

I glanced from Stan to the others. I wasn’t sure Adler wanted to talk. He was still smirking, but at the same time he looked like he was trying to edge away. The only thing stopping him was that he was pinned between Stan, Arvy, and my car.

I glanced at my watch, like I had to assess if I had the time to stop and talk. Of course I had time. Lots of time. All that was waiting for me at my place was takeout and a night of reading my notes. Oh, and catching up on the hundred or so Facebook messages from my family.

“I can give you five minutes,” I said, to qualify the importance of my time and reinforce my status. It was vital that I didn’t join in with discussions outside the official meetings; I had to stay outside the hockey circle, so that I could maintain a perspective on how things were playing out. Informal meetings didn’t get things done.

Stan pulled aside his shirt and showed me a tattoo. I had to peer closely, because I wasn’t sure what I was looking at, or even why it was being shown to me. It looked like a cartoon character; a PokΓ©mon or something.

“Hulk,” Stan said, and looked at me expectantly like I was supposed to understand a word. I don’t speak any Russian, though, so I looked at Coach for help.

“What he’s saying,” Coach Benning said, “is that he likes Ten, a lot, and that Ten and he had tattoos the same day, and that if you end up hanging Ten out to dry, then he will have something to say about it and go all Hulk on your ass.” The coach’s tone was easy, but there was a thread of steel in there.

“You got all that from one word?” I asked, and looked up at Stan, who was still scowling.

Coach only smiled. “He’s a man of few words. English ones, anyway.”

Stan clapped a hand on my shoulder, and jeez, he was one strong man. For a split second, fear skittered through me, but I pushed the fear back down where it belonged. No one here was going to hurt me.

I edged out of Stan’s reach and offered up my most reassuring smile. Stan looked at me, and then he smiled as well.

Seemed like we had an agreement going.

“Are we done talking about cock now?” Adler said loudly, breaking the accepting vibe in the small group. He underscored the words by grabbing suggestively at his groin. “Unless we’re whipping them out.”

“Jesus Christ, Ads,” Arvy snapped, and elbowed him.

Adler grinned. “All I’m saying is some of us have actual sex to go home to and don’t spend all day jawing about it.”

Then he shoved his way past Arvy, who shoved him back before letting him go.

“Asshole,” Arvy muttered, but it wasn’t said with heat. I exchanged glances with him, and he gave that single-shoulder shrug of “What can you do?”

I mentally added Adler to my list of concerns.

Release Blitz: Bed of Lies Volume 3 by Niquel

Title: Bed of Lies Volume 3
Author: Niquel
Series: Bed of Lies #3
Genre: Dark Erotic Romance
Release Date: September 27, 2017
Summary:
I knew I was meant to be his by the look in his eyes.

The man in the suit was mysterious and dark, broken like me.

I should have never been in the clutches of a monster such as Mendoza, but I was finally free. Linc had saved me from his wrath, and I thought I could give him everything he could ever dream of in return for choosing me.

I was horribly mistaken.

This was not the life I expected.

This new cage had been my home for what felt like an eternity. I hadn’t seen the man in the suit since the day I was taken from Mendoza, and that seemed so long ago. A man named Yavuz had come in from time to time to make sure I was fed and to have sex with me, and I was dead inside. Maybe the man had been killed, or maybe he just didn’t want me. Maybe the connection I’d felt had been a fluke.

The room I was in was small, and there was an old mattress in the middle of the room where Yavuz would take what he wanted from me. Most nights I welcomed the darkness. I begged Yavuz to set me free from my cage, and one evening he chained me up and left me in front of a large staircase. I sat there in the darkness, because silence was my friend.

In the middle of the night I had been attacked by someone. I was choked until I nearly passed out, but I couldn’t see my attacker’s face. I didn’t know why they wanted to harm me, but I stopped caring once the light at the end of the tunnel appeared. I wanted to be taken away from this body for good.

I was unlocked and tossed back into my cage without warning, and I lay on my side as I heard things bump in the night.

Release Blitz: Caged by Clarissa Wild

Title: Caged
Author: Clarissa Wild
Genre: Dark Romance
Release Date: September 26, 2017
Cover Design: Booming Covers
Summary:
They call me savage. An untamed beast.
I was born in the cage. Born to fight. Born to carry its name.
Locked away, I’ve spent years waiting for my mate.
I'm pent up with need. Brimming with desire.
All I want is her... That beautiful girl from the picture on my prison wall.
Now she’s finally here, sharing a cell.
So close. So hard to resist.
But one thing’s for sure…
Even if she doesn’t know it yet, she’s already mine.

WARNING: Contains disturbing content that may be offensive to some readers.

He makes his way through the room and opens my door. He looks like a walking sex god. Like a bear, he stalks toward me, but carefully, as if he doesn’t want to scare me. But I’m not afraid. Not anymore.

I don’t believe he could hurt me. He wants me too badly. He likes me too much to ruin me.

At least, that’s what I hope.

When he’s close, I suck in a breath as he inches toward me, eyes closed, and sniffs me again. He does that every time as if he savors my scent … or maybe it makes him hard.

He grunts, and when his eyes open, he tips my chin up and presses his lips to mine.

I go meek like a lamb, completely soft in his arms as he wraps them around me. I can’t help myself anymore. I’m falling … falling for the giant protector in my prison.

His tongue runs along my lips, nudging them apart. He claims my mouth with fervor, licking the roof of my mouth and tasting my tongue. I kiss him back just as hard, incapable of holding back. His mouth is just too delicious … too sinful.

His hand snakes around my waist and pulls me closer against his rock-hard body. I’m no match for his strength as he grabs me. At first, it frightened me, but now, it makes me feel safe. Loved.

I gulp down my nervousness as he stares hungrily into my eyes. He presses a greedy kiss against my jaw, his lips drawing a line all the way down my neck. I cock my head, letting him get closer, and he takes it as an invitation to slide his hand up my body and grasp my breast.

I moan into his mouth as he cups my breast and squeezes while pressing sweet kisses just below my collarbone. When he does this, I can almost drift away from this place. So I let him… I let him take me away.

He swoops me up into his arms again, and I wrap my arms around his neck. With my feet tucked behind his body and his hands on my ass, he carries me back to the room with the velvety bed. It’s already down on the floor again, and Cage places me on the soft sheets, immediately locking his mouth with mine again. His kisses feel rampant. As if he couldn’t stop even if he wanted to.

Hovering over me, he presses sweet, heavenly kisses all over my body until he reaches my breasts. With one hand, he inches up the pink dress I’m wearing until I’m naked, throwing it off the bed.

For a moment, I feel self-conscious, wanting to wrap my arms around my body and curl away, but his ravenous eyes and the way he licks his lips at the sight of me makes me feel good. Makes me feel wanted. Proud.

He grabs my wrists and firmly pins them above my head, pressing another kiss to my lips before going down. His lips roam freely across my chest, and he groans when he reaches my nipples. Suckling them one by one, he takes his sweet time to treat them well. Heat rises through my body as need crawls through my veins.

I should feel embarrassed for letting him take me like this, for being so easy, for letting go of my inhibitions. But then I remember it’s my only way out of here.
And when he sucks and licks me like that, it makes my eyes roll to the back of my head.

I can’t deny that it feels good, and I can’t say no because I don’t want him to stop.

I quiver underneath him as his hand slithers down my body and between my legs, cupping my pussy. Wetness pours out against his palm as he claims my breasts with his mouth. He’s like an animal wanting to devour me, and I actually want to give myself up to his needs even though he’s my first.

My first … ever.
