The Gate #.5
Original Review January 2018
As much as I enjoyed Lost in Time, I think I found this short story that introduces the reader to the world that brings Lew back to 1919 in Lost to be even better.  I didn't like it better because it is shorter or because it has different characters, no I found it appealed to my historical side a bit more.  As a 24/7 caregiver for my mother, I was also drawn to Matty's care of his brother upon returning from the war.  Perhaps it is these elements that I found myself giving this short story a slightly higher rating than Lost.  The Gate is a lovely look at post-war readjustment and the love Matty has for his brother as well as his attraction to Rob but its also a well written and clever introduction to the time-travel and magical elements that are further explored in Lost in Time.

RATING:

Lost in Time #1
Original Review January 2018
When Lew's friend, Mira, went missing he knew he had to find her at whatever the cost.  Well that cost was waking up in 1919.  Not only does Lew search for Mira but he also finds himself in the middle of a gruesome murder investigation.  The attraction between Lew and the lead investigator, Detective Alec Carter, is something neither man asked for but exists all the same.  As Lew learns to navigate through the past and Alec learns to readjust to civilian life after four years of blood, mud, and death in the trenches will they solve the mystery, find happiness, and discover a love that is illegal in the eyes of the law?

I want to start off by saying that most of you know I don't do spoilers but I even do less of them when it comes to mysteries and paranormals because even tiny little "throwaway" factors can be huge tip-offs.  What I will say in regard to the plot is I found it to be ingenious.  I always enjoy time-travel stories more where it happens more due to paranormal/magic than science, I think it just adds a special element that can actually heighten the mystery and even might border on horror.

As for the characters, they intrigued me and kept my interest from beginning to end.  I loved Lew's dedication to finding Mira, personally I don't know that I would have been able to keep my focus if I woke up in 1919 nearly a hundred years in the past.  As for Alec, despite having returned from four bloody years of war he is able to adjust somewhat "normally" back to civilian life.  That's not to say either character doesn't have issues with their circumstances but it makes them that much more rounded and believable.

Finally, I should note that there are some grammatical errors that some might find off putting or have issue with, but for this reader I did not.  Perhaps its because I tend to just mentally fix them as I read or perhaps I like to put my focus on the story and AL Lester's Lost in Time kept me intrigued from the first page to the last.  I look forward to what this new author brings us next.

RATING:

Author Bio:
A. L. Lester likes to read. Her favorite books are post-apocalyptic dystopian romances full of suspense, but a cornflake packet will do there's nothing else available. The gender of the characters she likes to read (and write) is pretty irrelevant so long as they are strong, interesting people on a journey of some kind.

She has a chaotic family life and small children, and she has become the person in the village who looks after the random animals people find in the road. She is interested in permaculture gardening and anything to do with books, reading, technology and history. She lives in a small village in rural Somerset and is seriously allergic to both rabbits and Minecraft

Review Tour: The Ghosts Between Us by Brigham Vaughn

Title: The Ghosts Between Us
Author: Brigham Vaughn
Series: The West Hills #1
Genre: M/M Romance
Release Date: March 1, 2019

Summary:
Dr. Christopher Allen knows how to deal with death. He’s a psychiatrist who works with hospice patients and their families, helping them cope with grief and letting go. But Chris’s job doesn’t prepare him for the sudden death of his devil-may-care brother Cal.

At Cal’s funeral, Chris is completely thrown when he meets Elliot Rawlings, an artist Cal has been dating. Chris is hurt to discover that the brother he knew as straight was actually bisexual. Elliot is angry and resentful of having been kept hidden from Cal’s family.

After the funeral, a night of drinking at the bar with Cal’s friends leads to Chris and Elliot falling into bed together. The next morning, they’re overwhelmed by guilt and grief and agree to never speak of it again.

But Cal’s apartment needs to be packed up and Elliot reluctantly agrees to help Chris, as well as answer some questions about Cal’s life and their relationship. Despite their guilt and initial dislike for one another, they sort through the pieces of Cal’s life and begin to fall for each other.

Despite his best efforts to fix things, Chris’s family seems to be crumbling around him and he begins to question who he is and what his role with them is. As his feelings for Elliot grow, Chris must decide if they’re worth further damaging his fragile relationships with his friends and family.

Elliot’s rough upbringing has left him distrustful of getting close to anyone, much less another man who isn’t willing to acknowledge him in public. The odds seem stacked against Chris and Elliot, but if they can overcome them, they may be able to lay Cal’s ghost to rest, along with their own demons.

I have to be honest, when I picked up The Ghosts Between Us, I was not in the mood for a full length drama at all, nothing against dramas because I love them I just didn't feel like one at the time.  However, I went ahead and opened my kindle and got stuck in.  Now it did take a couple of chapters to really pull me in but that was more me not ready to let go of the couple from the book I read previous.  All of sudden I was right there, like someone flipped a switch and before I knew it I was halfway through the book and desperate to learn the rest of Chris and Elliot's journey.

There is heartache and loss, distrust and pain, but there is also growth and discovery, friendship and heart.  Some people don't like backstory, I however love when an author can "fill us in" on the past in a fluid manner without making the story "choppy" or pieced together and that's what Brigham Vaughn has done, a perfect balanced journey.  Let's be honest, what better setting to use backstory than when you are packing up a loved one's possessions after they've been taken from us?  Good or bad memories help us remember and move forward when grieving.

As for Chris and Elliot, well I won't lie, there are more than a few times I found myself wanting to give the doc a good shaking and more than a few whacks to the backside to make him see what he's taking for granted.  But then if everything was hunky-dory from the get go than you'd be reading a 10-paragraph pamphlet instead of a full length novel and walkaway not nearly as entertained.

Chris, Elliot, and all the secondary characters all have a place in this story of grief, healing, and discovery and I wouldn't label a single one "extra" or "filler", each one has a purpose no matter how big or small.  One thing I really loved about Ghosts is even when I wanted to throttle Chris I realized that what made him so real is as a doctor he deals with death and families on a daily basis and yet when it comes to his own grief he's completely lost making him that much more real and possible.  It was elements such as Chris' expertise not really helping him that made me realize I could run into any one of these characters around the corner, at the gas station, or getting stamps.  The Ghosts Between Us may be a fictional creation of Brigham Vaughn but they are very real and "everyday" kind of people.

So I may not have been in the mood for a drama when I started Ghosts but by the last page I wasn't ready to say goodbye and that feeling when I put my kindle down afterwards says more than anything I mentioned in this review as to how amazing this story is.  Being able to get so sucked in when I was in the mood for something completely different takes talent and that is exactly why Brigham Vaughn is a member of what I like to call the Automatic-1-clickers Club.

RATING:

Sunday's Short Stack: Fade to Black by Josh Lanyon

Summary:
Sometimes our fate is written in the stars. Sometimes in indelible ink.

“Fade to Black” originally appeared in the 2016 charity anthology Magic & Mayhem: Fiction and Essays Celebrating LGBTQA Romance.

Fade to Black is a very short story that sucked me in from the very first sentence, "It is you."  Three little words that are so full of wonder: wonder who "you" is, wonder who's saying it, wonder what their previous encounter was, wonder will "you" remember the speaker, and wonder if this encounter will be a positive or negative for either character.  Josh Lanyon has once again created a story that grabs you and won't let go.  When I finished Fade I was not ready to say goodbye, not because the story was lacking anything in it's shortness but because I found myself that invested in Gene and Gordon's journey.  When an author can pull the reader in that deep with so few pages you know you have found a winning keeper in both the story and it's creator.

RATING:

Chapter 1
“It is you.”

I jumped as though I’d been caught mid-robbery and dropped the trash bag I was carrying. A couple of crumpled coffee cups rolled out, dribbling onto the black cement floor. “I didn’t know anyone was still here.”

He was standing in the shadows, but even so he was kind of hard to miss. Tall, lean, weathered. Leathered, in fact. Dark hair, dark eyes, skin deeply tanned. Like one of those Victorian teething dolls. Right down to the ugly seam creasing the left side of his rugged face.

“I saw you through the window,” he said.

“Oh. Yeah. That.” The picture window was Rikki’s idea. And actually, it did generate a lot of business—barring those times that the showcase client turned out to be someone who couldn’t take pain. Then…not so much.

The man in the shadows didn’t move, and the hair on the back of my neck stood up. What was that about? Like he still couldn’t believe what he was seeing. Which was…a man about his own age—forty-ish—medium height, slender, black ponytail, sleeves of tattoo tombstones wound with green and blue ivy. Dotted Line being a tattoo shop. The only tattoo shop on the island.

“We’re closed now,” I said. “You could come back tomorrow.”

He shook his head. “No. I don’t want another tat.”

Good thing. He didn’t have room for any more ink on those muscular arms. Not under the revised military regulations—and he was definitely military. Or maybe ex-military, because he was out of uniform. Sort of. Olive drab T-shirts, faded blue jeans, and huarache sandals are their own uniform.

“Okay. Well…” I picked up the bag of trash again and nodded for G.I. Joe to head on out the door. It was late. I was tired. My back hurt. I hoped this wasn’t going to turn into something weird. Off season was usually pretty calm, but I’ve been robbed twice off season—and the second time the dude had wanted to stay for a carving.

This guy? He was still staring at me like he was seeing a ghost.

Which actually he was. That’s my name. Ghost. Okay, Gordon if you want to get legal about it. Gordon Plymouth, but no one has called me Gordon in over twenty years.

“You don’t remember me, do you?” he asked.

I looked at the ink on his arms again. Nice work, but not mine. Not from anywhere around here. That looked Asian. The real thing. Irezumi. Not your KYF-00049 or a pick from 2011 Ten Best Japanese Tattoos.

“No.”

He reached for the hem of his T-shirt and yanked it up, revealing a brown and brawny chest. Smooth, hairless, and adorned with one of the worst pieces of body art a scratcher had ever carved into a piece of meat.

“What the hell is that?” I stepped closer to get a better look at what appeared to be a stapler adorned with a skull and crossbones.

The guy laughed. “You should know.”

I gaped at him.

He nodded, grinning, and I got a glimpse of a gold incisor.

“Me?”

I took another step forward, peering at his chest—he smelled pleasantly, reassuringly of Ivory soap—and dropped the trash bag again. This time just missing his huaraches. I gazed at him in horror. “I did that?”

“You sure did.” He was grinning like it was the funniest thing ever.

Which…nice he had a sense of humor about it, but…my gaze zeroed back on that evil-looking office product. It was old ink. At least a decade. I felt almost dizzy gazing at those fuzzy lines. I did vaguely remember…

“Wait,” I said. “It was a cover up, right? I was using the Jolly Roger to cover up…something. Bad.”

“Bullet holes. Tats, I mean.” He met my eyes. “I do have bullet scars now. I didn’t then. This was twenty years ago.”

“Twenty years ago,” I repeated in wonder. “Dude. You wore this blowout for twenty years?”

“Yeah.”

I couldn’t read his expression at all. His dark eyes were doing a flickering thing, his gaze roving over my face like he was looking for something from me. If it was remorse, oh hell yeah.

“Come back tomorrow and I’ll fix this for you,” I said. “In fact, if you want, I’ll fix it for you tonight. If you have a couple of hours, I’ll fix it for you now.”

“No, no. That’s not why I…” He stopped.

I couldn’t seem to stop gazing into his eyes. Like everywhere I looked, I was somehow staring at him. It was so weird. But he did have pretty eyes. Kind of a black-brown and almond-shaped, fringed with thick eyelashes. Almost like cartoon eyes. They would be fun to draw for a New School stencil.

He gave me a funny, self-conscious smile. “You really don’t remember me at all, do you?”

SYN Consulting #1
Matthew finished the last bit of his sandwich as he stood up going over to a wall of glass that overlaid the actual wall. The glass was one large computer interface, much like most of the glass in the building from the table they were eating on to elevator walls, to all the glass panel monitors of various sizes. Matt tapped on the panel bringing up several windows and enlarging them so that everyone could see. He pulled a photo of Kollin Olsen and moved it to the center.

He reached back, grabbing his bottle of water. Swallowing a mouthful, he cleared his throat and started his report. “I finished my preliminary research into KleanTech and Global Gas. You'll never believe who Kollin Olsen is.” Danica was completely occupied with a large mouthful of her sandwich and gestured for him to continue. “He's the next alpha to the Norwegian Dragon Clan, son of none other than HafthΓ³r Ormsson, making him JΗ«kull Ormsson, The Glacier himself.”

“Fuck!” Danica thought, looking over at Xander, who could hear her thought clearly.

“Fuck is right,” he answered out loud.

Danica took another bite of her sandwich and looked around the table at the family she had created, mulling over that bombshell. Matt, thankfully, let her take her time and waited silently while she came to terms with that disturbing news.

These SLIPs who stood by her, supported her, and loved her were, for the lack of a better word, her pack as motley as they were. They were hers to protect as much as they protected her. She thought about that as she continued to eat. Xander placed a hand on her thigh and squeezed it reassuringly. If she took this job, she risked exposure of what she was. With that, she risked not just her life, but all of their lives.

Secrets Revealed #2
Kenshin relaxed back against the hull of the plane again after ending the call with Kollin. This time yesterday everything was fine. How did things get this fucked up, this quickly? Kenshin closed his eyes, and exhaustion started to seep in. The noise of the cargo plane dimmed in his mind with each breath he took.

"I remember when I first met her." JP's voice cut through his attempt at meditation and Kenshin's eyes flew open. JP continued, "She looked no older than fifteen. I thought for sure she was using a fake passport to get into La TrΓ©sor. She wouldn't stand down though. She looked up at me, and even though she had an American passport, she spoke in fluent French, which I didn't expect. But I also didn't expect her to stand her ground when I tried to get her to move and go home."

Kenshin was tempted to stop him from telling his story, to shout out that he's being stupid for talking like that. Telling stories like that is something you do when you're talking of the dead and DAMN IT! She wasn't dead yet.

"Cool as a cucumber she looked me in the eye and demanded to speak to the owner. Even the threat of the Gendarmerie didn't sway her, and she didn't try to bribe her way in like most would have. That right there was why I finally made the call up to Olivier. And you know what she did when she finally came face to face with him?”

Kenshin turned his head towards JP. The packmates closest to them were all looking at JP completely enraptured by his tale. Kenshin didn't know what happened, so he was curious.

JP smiled and gave a little laugh at the memory. "She didn't do what you'd expect someone to do. She didn't yell or demand he fire me. No, not Dani. She said, and I'll never forget this. She said, Whatever you're paying him, double it and put him in charge. She went on to tell him how the other bouncers didn't look twice at her because they were too busy looking at her tits. She said it just like that too. She didn't back down then to get what she wanted, and she's not going to do that now. She's strong, our Dani. She's never backed down from a challenge, and she won't back down from this. We have to have faith because we all know she'd have it in us."

Claps and cheers went up around Kenshin, and he smiled probably for the first time that morning. JP was right, and Kenshin needed to keep in mind how strong she really was. Listening to him made Kenshin think about his own first time with her. He knew when he saw this arrogant kid stride into his father's office in Kyoto, dressed the way she normally does that he just might have a way out from under his father. That he could finally be free for the first time in over two-hundred years. And make no mistake at a fraction of his age, she was a kid, and he had just spent the last sixty years helping his father build Nakamura Industries. But there was something about her, and her business proposal to his father was solid, a little crazy, but solid.

The plane quieted down as everyone settled in for the long flight home. Faith. He had faith in her all those years ago and he'd not waiver now. JP was right. Strength, determination, stubbornness. These were the things that made up their dragon. They were the things that would see her to the other side of this in one piece. Kenshin closed his eyes again and sleep finally took him now that his mind was settled.

First Strike #3
Aiden and Lukas were able to leave Danica's flat right after dinner. She told everyone to go and have fun before she curled up on her couch with Bastien to watch movies. Aiden led Lukas out the office door and down to the river. He'd never been out with his Master like this, and all he wanted was to take a walk holding hands. So, they did.

As they came closer to the bridge, Aiden stopped. He pointed to some bushes that were growing against the wall. “This is where I found Bastien. He was such a small pup. His fur was matted, and he was so skinny. I knew right away he was one of us.” Lukas squeezed his hand gently. “It took me forever to coax him out and let me touch him. He was so scared. You know we still don't know what happened to his pack or where he came from? He says he doesn't remember, but we think he just really doesn't want to talk about it.”

Lukas listened to Aiden ramble patiently as always. “You've raised him well, Aiden. He's a fine young praeses. He's smart and has learned a lot from everyone around him.” Lukas pulled him close and wrapped an arm around his waist.

Aiden wrapped his arms around Lukas' neck. He was only slightly taller than Aiden, and he was slimmer, but they fit together perfectly. “That first year with Bastien was the hardest. He had nightmares almost every night. Danica would sit with him and read him stories until he fell back asleep. He'd curl up on her lap refusing to shift out of his wolf form.”

“I remember when you brought him for the first time to the pack lands for a run. That was the first time I really saw you. You were so patient with him. We only had a few pups around his age at the time, and he didn't want to go near them, but you finally got him to play with them. That was the first time I saw you as a wolf too, and you stole my breath away.” Aiden blushed at Lukas' praise. Lukas leaned down and nipped at Aiden's ear. “I wanted you so much starting that day. You know you've been my pup for almost ten years now?”

Lukas' deep, low voice sent shivers down Aiden's spine as he nodded. “Yes, Master.”

“I have many plans for us, now that we don't have to hide anymore.” One of Lukas' hands traveled lower and cupped Aiden's ass. Aiden whimpered softly.

What is the biggest influence/interest that brought you to this genre?
I've read fantasy since I was a kid and am a huge fan of the genre. I love dragons and had been building my "What if" world for a while. Once the characters started coming to mind, it took off from there.

When writing a book, what is your favorite part of the creative process(outline, plot, character names, editing, etc)?
That's a tough question. I think the plotting. I love figuring out what's going to happen and all the little twists and turns of the plot. I don't outline my books. I have ideas of what will happen in each book and I see what really happens once I start writing. Sometimes characters don't always do what I want them to do.

When reading a book, what genre do you find most interesting/intriguing?
I read m/m anything really, contemp to mpreg, dark to fluff. I read a lot, not as much as I used to before I published but I still read a good 4-7 books a week.

If you could co-author with any author, past or present, who would you choose?
That is a really tough question. I think I'd be a horrible co-author. Lol I'm a total control freak. There are a couple of Indie authors that I think I could realistically write with if there was something that we both really wanted to do together. It would be a pretty big challenge actually bringing our two styles together.

Have you always wanted to write or did it come to you "later in life"?
I never considered writing to publish until I wrote books 1-3 for Dragon War Chronicles. I know I still have some stuff floating around Literotica that I wrote in my mid 20s, but that was just for fun. So, I guess no I've not always wanted to write. I didn't feel moved to really write until I started writing DWC and then I blew out three books and 150k words in three months. Even after that I didn't think I'd actually see them published until some of my coworkers who I really didn't know that well read book one and asked to read book two. They really encouraged me to take it to the next level.

Vance would much rather sweat in his studio creating metal sculptures with his blow torch than take any kind of position at the family firm. When pressure from his father mounts, Vance is torn between going with the flow or making waves. But everything changes when Vance hits a bike messenger with his car.

Kyle has drifted through his life with a massive chip on his shoulder against the privilege that’s always been just out of reach. His job as a bike messenger doesn’t help. He’s stuck delivering packages to the very elites he loathes. When Vance crashes into Kyle, they’re suddenly thrust onto different paths than they ever expected. But can they take this new path together, or will egos and societal privilege create too many obstacles to overcome?

Author Bio:
Ann Lister is a native New Englander currently living on the island of Martha's Vineyard with her husband. She has pulled details from her years living in the New England area and uses many local settings and landmarks in her novels. After graduating art school, marrying, and raising two daughters, she established her own video production company. Her nearly two decades working in video production included work within the music industry and won her a coveted Telly Award.

Her 'behind-the-scenes' exposure to the music world and her love of rock music is the inspiration for her erotic rock star romances. Her rock star romance, “Fall For Me”, Book One in The Rock Gods series, was a Finalist in the 2013 Rainbow Award and Book Three, Make You Mine, established her as an Amazon #1 Bestselling Author. Each book in The Rock Gods series brings her two favorite elements together: musicians and the love between two men.

Her stories focus on what it truly means to love; love unconditionally, love without restrictions or labels, love without fear or judgment – to just simply love.
