     He swore under his breath and stomped out of the room, returning shortly with a handheld phone. He pointed it at the little girl, who didn’t seem cowed in the least. “No phones. Not a toy.”

And I’m sure everyone on the film shoot will be very understanding that we’re all crowding into your lives for a few months, really. They’re not so bad, those movie stars.”
     “Ryan Howard.” He extended his hand, and she took it, enjoying the way he gripped her fingers, his skin warm and dry and rough against hers. He squeezed her hand more than people usually did, and she felt the stern shake all the way up her arm.
     Who knew she’d been missing an honest handshake in her life?
     He let go and crossed his arms over his broad chest. She looked up at him—way up. She was average height for a woman, and he still towered over her. In his plaid shirt shoved up to his elbows and his faded jeans, he looked every inch the rustic lumberjack she thought might live here—except for the cute part. That was unexpected.
     And inconvenient, because this particular lumberjack had a family. She needed a clone of him back in Los Angeles, although she suspected that maybe something would get lost in translation.
     “Thanks for the instructions. I’ll call if I have any questions.” She waved the paper in the air as she blindly reached for the door behind her.
     He nodded, his face showing none of the distraction that rioted through her midsection. Of course not. She was a random nobody, sweating and flustered, who’d showed up in the middle of a late dinner demanding help.
     But she could help herself, armed with the piece of paper in her hand. It was a little thing, but was hers.
     He grabbed the door as she swung it open, closing it quietly behind her as she headed back into the night.

1. What is the biggest influence/interest that brought you to this genre?
Romantic comedy comes easily to me — it is the genre that I think fits my voice best, and for this series, it was a natural fit. The Girlfriends of Gotham books also fall into the New Adult category, in which I really love to work. There’s so much in that time of our lives that is ripe for exploration, even outside of romance. First jobs, first time out living on our own without a parental safety net (for most)… with so many opportunities to fail and to learn, characters between 18 and 26 are my favorite to write.

2. When writing a book, what is your favorite part of the creative process(outline, plot, character names, editing, etc)?
I dread outlining. I get initial ideas, and I know what is going to happen for the most part. But I also know that if I don’t define things pretty well, then the writing process inevitably meanders around and takes too long. I can write very quickly if I know what I’m writing, and since I write early in the morning, I need to have a plan the night before since my brain isn’t at full capacity at five a.m.!

3. When reading a book, what genre do you find most interesting/intriguing?
I read widely, and don’t really have a favorite genre or category. I spend a fair amount of time reading romance, since that is what I have written mostly, but I love a great historical family saga (like Ken Follett’s PILLARS OF THE EARTH or Jeffrey Archer’s AS THE CROW FLIES.) But I love a well done literary fiction, too. A recent obsession that I’m reading again right now is E. Lockhart’s WE WERE LIARS. I love the idea of the unreliable protagonist. The other books I’ve read lately that really stuck with me were the Fever series from Karen Marie Moning, so you can see that I get a pretty good range!

4. If you could co-author with any author, past or present, who would you choose?
That’s a pretty tough question. I have friends who write together, and I’m just really unsure how that works! I don’t know if I’m supposed to answer based on my admiration for a certain author’s writing style, my belief that we might actually fit well personality-wise and therefore be a good working partnership, or my desire to hook my cart to someone else’s already-wildly successful caravan! Suffice it to say, I haven’t co-authored anything, though I’d be open to it.

5. Have you always wanted to write or did it come to you "later in life"?
I’ve been writing since I was a child, and have always worked in an editorial field to some degree. I’ve never doubted that words were my addiction of choice, and I really can’t imagine a life without this deep love I feel for stories and words. That said, I always knew I’d write a book, but when I was six months out from my 40th birthday and hadn’t done it yet, I said, “well, I think it’s probably half over. If I do it now, I could work at it for 20 years. If I wait much longer, I’ll probably never do it.” So the decision to actually put butt in chair, fingers on keyboard, and write completed novels was a later in life one.

Some tidbits about me...

I turned down a scholarship to Miskatonic University because I heard of the high rate of incidents against the student population.

I briefly worked for Omni Consumer Products in their Marketing Department. Great benefits, nice cafeteria, sadly too prone to executive whim.

Last year I stayed at the noted Mauna Pele resort in Hawaii. The accommodations were impressive but my traveling companion disappeared soon after wanting to attend a pig roast.

I've slept with one minor porn star and with a guy who later became one.

And I happen to have written some fanfic that inspired the memorable holodeck scene in Star Trek: Hidden Frontiers episode "Vigil".

Shawn Syms

Shawn Syms has written about culture, politics, gender and sexuality for the past 24 years. His essays and stories have appeared in 5 anthologies and his literary short fiction was shortlisted for the Journey Prize in 2009.  His writing has appeared in over 50 publications, among them Spacing, The Globe and Mail, the National Post, The Rumpus and The Collagist.

Nathan Burgoine 

Nathan Burgoine grew up a reader and studied literature in university while making a living as a bookseller. His first published short story was "Heart" in the collection Fool for Love: New Gay Fiction. Since then, he has had over two dozen short stories published, including This is How You Die (the second Machine of Death anthology).

His first novel, Light, is available from Bold Strokes Books and was a finalist for both the Lambda Literary Award for LGBT SF/Fantasy/Horror, and the BOTYA 2013 Gay & Lesbian (Adult Fiction) ForeWord award. His first novella-length work, "In Memoriam," is included in the collection On the Run, by Wilde City Press.

A cat lover, 'Nathan managed to fall in love and marry Daniel, who is a confirmed dog person. Their ongoing "cat or dog?" détente ended with the adoption of Coach, a six-year old husky. They live in Ottawa, Canada, where socialized health care and gay marriage have yet to cause the sky to cave in.

Sam Cameron 

A Navy veteran, Sam Cameron spent several years serving in the Pacific and along the Atlantic coast. Her transgender, romance, and science fiction novels have been recognized for their wit, inventiveness, and passion. She holds an MFA in Creative Writing and currently teaches college in Florida.
