Title: Chasing Eddie
Author: Frank W Butterfield
Series: Golden Gate Love Stories #3
Genre: M/M Romance
Release Date: February 10, 2019

Summary:
January 29, 2019

Eddie Smith is a chubby bear of a guy who lives in Daytona Beach and doesn't work much anymore but isn't retired.

Whit Hall has just retired as a tight end for an NFL expansion team and lives in San Antonio.

At 52, Eddie feels at home with himself and has learned how to roll with life. He's happy enough where he is and doesn't expect much to happen anytime soon.

At 35, Whit is ready for a life that put less of a strain on his body. He's banked plenty of dough but doesn't know what to do next.

. . .

About to sit down to his favorite take-out lasagna, Eddie gets a call from a friend who wants to hire him to help Whit figure out what's next in his life.

Eddie is a kinda, sorta life coach and might be able to help but seriously doubts it.

Reluctantly, he climbs aboard his friend's private jet and flies to San Antonio. Once he arrives, he ends up getting a whole lot more than he bargained for. Whit Hall is aggressive, he's angry, and he's under a lot of pressure.

It's a good thing Eddie (sorta) knows what he's doing!

. . .

Now that he's retired, Whit is looking for the next thing.

He's set, with plenty of bank. And he's doing what he can to deal with his parents, who are all up in his business. A lot.

Then, one Wednesday morning, he opens his front door. Before he knows it, Whit is chasing Eddie Smith out of his house, down the street, and even further.

It's a good thing Whit is (kinda) in shape for this new type of chase!

. . .

Neither man wants to go far...

But unexpected changes are chasing them both...

Wherever they end up going, and whatever ends up happening, this will be the beginning of something new and wonderful for them both.

. . .

This 45K word stand-alone contemporary male/male (MM) romance involves a chubby bear guy and a retired professional football player.

Included:
Some tension...
Hints of a coming-out story...
Medium-heat sexual descriptions...
Slightly nerdy details...
Some metaphysics...
And a HEA (that's a happily-ever-after)...

Not included:
Much angst...
Graphic sexual descriptions...
A cliff-hanger...

This story is the beginning of a series of contemporary romantic adventures. It ends with the start of one of those, so there are some loose plot points but no cliff-hanger.

Topics: virgin, virgin hero, out for you, first time romance, mid-life transformation, innocent first timer, late bloomer

. . .

Golden Gate Love Stories are all about the lives and loves of men who fall in love with each other and find the one they were waiting for.

Set in the same universe as the Nick Williams Mystery Series and the Daytona Beach Book Series, these love stories focus on the men who come together, find true love, and really do live happily ever after.

He looked at me for a long moment. His violet eyes got more focused and I wondered what was going on in that head of his with its tufted hair on top and strange gray streaks.

I could feel my attraction for him suddenly come front and center. Like always happened, my knees got a little weak and my mouth got dry.

I held his gaze for as long as I could, wondering what was really going on. I knew what I wanted to happen. I wanted something... Like a kiss or more. I was pretty sure he'd been watching me as if he was attracted to me. His eyes always went to my belly, which was a tell-tale sign. Right then, however, his violet eyes were drilling into mine.

As always, I started doubting myself. Maybe I was mis-reading him entirely. Maybe he was just a friendly straight guy. As we looked at each other, all of those thoughts, and more, ran through my head.

Of course, I'd been hired by Bob to do a job and kissing Whit wasn't in the job description. And it wasn't ethical for me to kiss him. Not that I adhered to some sort of written code of ethics. I just didn't think it was respectful of Whit as a client, even though he really wasn't my client, but that was splitting hairs.

Nevertheless, I was tempted to put my left hand around his waist, but I was afraid how he would react. It was hard to be around a big scaredy-cat who might bite, and hard, at any moment.

So, with all that going through my mind, I stood perfectly still and examined the violet in his eyes, something that was remarkable to look at.

And then, suddenly, it was over.

He turned and looked at the river. After another few seconds, he leaned against one of the trees and crossed his arms. "Knowing this is here is enough to get me to stay."

"Oh?" I asked, wishing I had some water to drink.

He cleared his throat. "Yeah. I talked to my business manager about putting the house up for sale. He thinks I could make a profit on it, considering that I owned it."

I looked over at the river, not wanting to show him what I thought of that idea. But, somehow, he knew I had an opinion.

"What?"

"I guess I would never think of paying a premium on a house because a football player had lived there. Not one like that one. You've got a historical marker, after all."

He didn't say anything. I looked over at him. He was staring out at the river.

"I tried to get the city to let me remove that thing—"

"What!" I couldn't help myself.

He looked at me, frowning. Shrugging, he said, "Well, I don't give a shit about how old it is or who lived in it."

"Well, then, why the hell did you buy it?"

He leaned forward, aggressively. "I didn't buy it. My mother did."

I leaned back. "Oh."

He took a deep breath and then said, "Sorry. I promised Ossler I wouldn't do that again."

I knew what he meant, but I wanted to hear him say it. "Do what?"

"Get in your face." He did look contrite which, on him, was really cute.

"Thanks, Whit."

He looked down at me and smiled a little. "No sweat, Coach."

I grinned and shook my head.

He laughed and then patted his belly. "OK. Now, I'm hungry."

"Me too."

The Gate #.5
Original Review January 2018
As much as I enjoyed Lost in Time, I think I found this short story that introduces the reader to the world that brings Lew back to 1919 in Lost to be even better.  I didn't like it better because it is shorter or because it has different characters, no I found it appealed to my historical side a bit more.  As a 24/7 caregiver for my mother, I was also drawn to Matty's care of his brother upon returning from the war.  Perhaps it is these elements that I found myself giving this short story a slightly higher rating than Lost.  The Gate is a lovely look at post-war readjustment and the love Matty has for his brother as well as his attraction to Rob but its also a well written and clever introduction to the time-travel and magical elements that are further explored in Lost in Time.

RATING:

Lost in Time #1
Original Review January 2018
When Lew's friend, Mira, went missing he knew he had to find her at whatever the cost.  Well that cost was waking up in 1919.  Not only does Lew search for Mira but he also finds himself in the middle of a gruesome murder investigation.  The attraction between Lew and the lead investigator, Detective Alec Carter, is something neither man asked for but exists all the same.  As Lew learns to navigate through the past and Alec learns to readjust to civilian life after four years of blood, mud, and death in the trenches will they solve the mystery, find happiness, and discover a love that is illegal in the eyes of the law?

I want to start off by saying that most of you know I don't do spoilers but I even do less of them when it comes to mysteries and paranormals because even tiny little "throwaway" factors can be huge tip-offs.  What I will say in regard to the plot is I found it to be ingenious.  I always enjoy time-travel stories more where it happens more due to paranormal/magic than science, I think it just adds a special element that can actually heighten the mystery and even might border on horror.

As for the characters, they intrigued me and kept my interest from beginning to end.  I loved Lew's dedication to finding Mira, personally I don't know that I would have been able to keep my focus if I woke up in 1919 nearly a hundred years in the past.  As for Alec, despite having returned from four bloody years of war he is able to adjust somewhat "normally" back to civilian life.  That's not to say either character doesn't have issues with their circumstances but it makes them that much more rounded and believable.

Finally, I should note that there are some grammatical errors that some might find off putting or have issue with, but for this reader I did not.  Perhaps its because I tend to just mentally fix them as I read or perhaps I like to put my focus on the story and AL Lester's Lost in Time kept me intrigued from the first page to the last.  I look forward to what this new author brings us next.

RATING:

Author Bio:
A. L. Lester likes to read. Her favorite books are post-apocalyptic dystopian romances full of suspense, but a cornflake packet will do there's nothing else available. The gender of the characters she likes to read (and write) is pretty irrelevant so long as they are strong, interesting people on a journey of some kind.

She has a chaotic family life and small children, and she has become the person in the village who looks after the random animals people find in the road. She is interested in permaculture gardening and anything to do with books, reading, technology and history. She lives in a small village in rural Somerset and is seriously allergic to both rabbits and Minecraft

Review Tour: The Ghosts Between Us by Brigham Vaughn

Title: The Ghosts Between Us
Author: Brigham Vaughn
Series: The West Hills #1
Genre: M/M Romance
Release Date: March 1, 2019

Summary:
Dr. Christopher Allen knows how to deal with death. He’s a psychiatrist who works with hospice patients and their families, helping them cope with grief and letting go. But Chris’s job doesn’t prepare him for the sudden death of his devil-may-care brother Cal.

At Cal’s funeral, Chris is completely thrown when he meets Elliot Rawlings, an artist Cal has been dating. Chris is hurt to discover that the brother he knew as straight was actually bisexual. Elliot is angry and resentful of having been kept hidden from Cal’s family.

After the funeral, a night of drinking at the bar with Cal’s friends leads to Chris and Elliot falling into bed together. The next morning, they’re overwhelmed by guilt and grief and agree to never speak of it again.

But Cal’s apartment needs to be packed up and Elliot reluctantly agrees to help Chris, as well as answer some questions about Cal’s life and their relationship. Despite their guilt and initial dislike for one another, they sort through the pieces of Cal’s life and begin to fall for each other.

Despite his best efforts to fix things, Chris’s family seems to be crumbling around him and he begins to question who he is and what his role with them is. As his feelings for Elliot grow, Chris must decide if they’re worth further damaging his fragile relationships with his friends and family.

Elliot’s rough upbringing has left him distrustful of getting close to anyone, much less another man who isn’t willing to acknowledge him in public. The odds seem stacked against Chris and Elliot, but if they can overcome them, they may be able to lay Cal’s ghost to rest, along with their own demons.

I have to be honest, when I picked up The Ghosts Between Us, I was not in the mood for a full length drama at all, nothing against dramas because I love them I just didn't feel like one at the time.  However, I went ahead and opened my kindle and got stuck in.  Now it did take a couple of chapters to really pull me in but that was more me not ready to let go of the couple from the book I read previous.  All of sudden I was right there, like someone flipped a switch and before I knew it I was halfway through the book and desperate to learn the rest of Chris and Elliot's journey.

There is heartache and loss, distrust and pain, but there is also growth and discovery, friendship and heart.  Some people don't like backstory, I however love when an author can "fill us in" on the past in a fluid manner without making the story "choppy" or pieced together and that's what Brigham Vaughn has done, a perfect balanced journey.  Let's be honest, what better setting to use backstory than when you are packing up a loved one's possessions after they've been taken from us?  Good or bad memories help us remember and move forward when grieving.

As for Chris and Elliot, well I won't lie, there are more than a few times I found myself wanting to give the doc a good shaking and more than a few whacks to the backside to make him see what he's taking for granted.  But then if everything was hunky-dory from the get go than you'd be reading a 10-paragraph pamphlet instead of a full length novel and walkaway not nearly as entertained.

Chris, Elliot, and all the secondary characters all have a place in this story of grief, healing, and discovery and I wouldn't label a single one "extra" or "filler", each one has a purpose no matter how big or small.  One thing I really loved about Ghosts is even when I wanted to throttle Chris I realized that what made him so real is as a doctor he deals with death and families on a daily basis and yet when it comes to his own grief he's completely lost making him that much more real and possible.  It was elements such as Chris' expertise not really helping him that made me realize I could run into any one of these characters around the corner, at the gas station, or getting stamps.  The Ghosts Between Us may be a fictional creation of Brigham Vaughn but they are very real and "everyday" kind of people.

So I may not have been in the mood for a drama when I started Ghosts but by the last page I wasn't ready to say goodbye and that feeling when I put my kindle down afterwards says more than anything I mentioned in this review as to how amazing this story is.  Being able to get so sucked in when I was in the mood for something completely different takes talent and that is exactly why Brigham Vaughn is a member of what I like to call the Automatic-1-clickers Club.

Sunday's Short Stack: Fade to Black by Josh Lanyon

Summary:
Sometimes our fate is written in the stars. Sometimes in indelible ink.

“Fade to Black” originally appeared in the 2016 charity anthology Magic & Mayhem: Fiction and Essays Celebrating LGBTQA Romance.

Fade to Black is a very short story that sucked me in from the very first sentence, "It is you."  Three little words that are so full of wonder: wonder who "you" is, wonder who's saying it, wonder what their previous encounter was, wonder will "you" remember the speaker, and wonder if this encounter will be a positive or negative for either character.  Josh Lanyon has once again created a story that grabs you and won't let go.  When I finished Fade I was not ready to say goodbye, not because the story was lacking anything in it's shortness but because I found myself that invested in Gene and Gordon's journey.  When an author can pull the reader in that deep with so few pages you know you have found a winning keeper in both the story and it's creator.

RATING:

Chapter 1
“It is you.”

I jumped as though I’d been caught mid-robbery and dropped the trash bag I was carrying. A couple of crumpled coffee cups rolled out, dribbling onto the black cement floor. “I didn’t know anyone was still here.”

He was standing in the shadows, but even so he was kind of hard to miss. Tall, lean, weathered. Leathered, in fact. Dark hair, dark eyes, skin deeply tanned. Like one of those Victorian teething dolls. Right down to the ugly seam creasing the left side of his rugged face.

“I saw you through the window,” he said.

“Oh. Yeah. That.” The picture window was Rikki’s idea. And actually, it did generate a lot of business—barring those times that the showcase client turned out to be someone who couldn’t take pain. Then…not so much.

The man in the shadows didn’t move, and the hair on the back of my neck stood up. What was that about? Like he still couldn’t believe what he was seeing. Which was…a man about his own age—forty-ish—medium height, slender, black ponytail, sleeves of tattoo tombstones wound with green and blue ivy. Dotted Line being a tattoo shop. The only tattoo shop on the island.

“We’re closed now,” I said. “You could come back tomorrow.”

He shook his head. “No. I don’t want another tat.”

Good thing. He didn’t have room for any more ink on those muscular arms. Not under the revised military regulations—and he was definitely military. Or maybe ex-military, because he was out of uniform. Sort of. Olive drab T-shirts, faded blue jeans, and huarache sandals are their own uniform.

“Okay. Well…” I picked up the bag of trash again and nodded for G.I. Joe to head on out the door. It was late. I was tired. My back hurt. I hoped this wasn’t going to turn into something weird. Off season was usually pretty calm, but I’ve been robbed twice off season—and the second time the dude had wanted to stay for a carving.

This guy? He was still staring at me like he was seeing a ghost.

Which actually he was. That’s my name. Ghost. Okay, Gordon if you want to get legal about it. Gordon Plymouth, but no one has called me Gordon in over twenty years.

“You don’t remember me, do you?” he asked.

I looked at the ink on his arms again. Nice work, but not mine. Not from anywhere around here. That looked Asian. The real thing. Irezumi. Not your KYF-00049 or a pick from 2011 Ten Best Japanese Tattoos.

“No.”

He reached for the hem of his T-shirt and yanked it up, revealing a brown and brawny chest. Smooth, hairless, and adorned with one of the worst pieces of body art a scratcher had ever carved into a piece of meat.

“What the hell is that?” I stepped closer to get a better look at what appeared to be a stapler adorned with a skull and crossbones.

The guy laughed. “You should know.”

I gaped at him.

He nodded, grinning, and I got a glimpse of a gold incisor.

“Me?”

I took another step forward, peering at his chest—he smelled pleasantly, reassuringly of Ivory soap—and dropped the trash bag again. This time just missing his huaraches. I gazed at him in horror. “I did that?”

“You sure did.” He was grinning like it was the funniest thing ever.

Which…nice he had a sense of humor about it, but…my gaze zeroed back on that evil-looking office product. It was old ink. At least a decade. I felt almost dizzy gazing at those fuzzy lines. I did vaguely remember…

“Wait,” I said. “It was a cover up, right? I was using the Jolly Roger to cover up…something. Bad.”

“Bullet holes. Tats, I mean.” He met my eyes. “I do have bullet scars now. I didn’t then. This was twenty years ago.”

“Twenty years ago,” I repeated in wonder. “Dude. You wore this blowout for twenty years?”

“Yeah.”

I couldn’t read his expression at all. His dark eyes were doing a flickering thing, his gaze roving over my face like he was looking for something from me. If it was remorse, oh hell yeah.

“Come back tomorrow and I’ll fix this for you,” I said. “In fact, if you want, I’ll fix it for you tonight. If you have a couple of hours, I’ll fix it for you now.”

“No, no. That’s not why I…” He stopped.

I couldn’t seem to stop gazing into his eyes. Like everywhere I looked, I was somehow staring at him. It was so weird. But he did have pretty eyes. Kind of a black-brown and almond-shaped, fringed with thick eyelashes. Almost like cartoon eyes. They would be fun to draw for a New School stencil.

He gave me a funny, self-conscious smile. “You really don’t remember me at all, do you?”
