Monday's Musical Melody: The Viking & the Drag Queen by VL Locey

Summary:

Campo Royale #1
Who will emerge the victor on the battlefield of love?

Tyr Hemmingsen had his life mapped out at a young age. The only son of the late Danish hockey great, Elias Hemmingsen, Tyr has always done his best to follow the plans his father had laid out for him. Finish school, make it into the pros, become team captain, find a biddable young lady to marry, and win a championship so the Hemmingsen name lived on eternally on the side of a massive silver cup. Like the good son he is, Tyr has done as his father wished, no matter how it peeled away layers of his true self. Then, all the neatly placed supports that hold up his so-called life come crashing down during a night on the town. Tyr might be known as the “War God of Wilmington” on the ice, but there’s no battling the effect Gigi Patel LeBay has on him.

Elijah McBride lives for the spotlight. As Gigi, he bewitches and bedazzles the crowds at the Campo Royale Club. His vibrant stage persona is the face he presents to the world. Underneath the rouge, eyeliner, and lipstick is a young man who still feels the sting of his parents’ disapproval and rejection of the son who wears wigs and dates other men. With his drag family and older brother in his corner, he’s finally found peace in his life. Until the fateful night a massive hockey player shows up at the club. There’s a world of hurt in Tyr’s soft brown eyes, and Eli finds himself falling for the big man, despite all the barriers he’s built around his tender heart.

The Viking and the Drag Queen is an opposites attract gay romance with heavy checking, lipstick worship, an out and proud queen, a closeted athlete, family lost and found, twink/jock, a new beginning, and a well-cinched happy ending.

Prologue
TYR
“Tellme the story of your namesake.”

I glanced up from where I sat on the floor, the bed at my back. I hated to gaze upon him as he was, yet Mama insisted I not look away. I ran a finger over the threadbare carpet. ‘He needs to see your face, my son,’ she would say, then go hide in the garden shed, her legs tucked under her, staring at the hoes and watering cans sometimes for days. I would bring her food and water when she was in the shed. It was all I could do.

“Can I tell you one of the tales that I wrote?”

“No more talk of writing stories. Put those away. You’ll play hockey…do what I failed to do. Now, tell me the story of your namesake.”

“Which one, Papa?”

When Mama was caught in the darkness that stole her away, I stayed on the floor, the chair beside his bed empty. He would pet my head with a skeletal hand. It was so unlike the strong hand that used to hoist me to my feet after a tumble on the ice.

“The most heroic telling,” he rasped, his fingertips buried in my overly long hair.

I sighed, wishing to be anywhere but in this sick room. All my friends, my teammates, were out playing in the snow or skating on the frozen ponds of Ribe. I was here, alone, watching my father wither away physically as my mother shriveled mentally. It was no place for a twelve-year-old boy, all the neighbors whispered.

“When the dread wolf Fenrir was a mere pup, it was quickly noted that he was growing into a massive hound, far bigger than any other. This scared the gods, so they attempted to shackle him in fetters that he would never break free from.”

“And which god was willing to do so?” he asked, his voice brittle as a leaf touched by winter.

“Only Tyr was willing to do it, for he had raised Fenrir from a suckling pup. Of all the Aesir, only Tyr knew how to keep his emotions in check, for the blood of Jotenheim ran in his veins. The gods went to the dwarves and had them fashion a chain that would hold the dread wolf, as all other normal chains had failed. And so, they presented the chain, Deceiver, to the wolf, but he was not fooled. Fenrir declared that he would only allow the gods to place him into bondage if one of them would put their hand in this muzzle as a show that they would not break their oaths. Only Tyr was willing to do so, for he loved Fenrir.”

“None among the Nine Worlds were more honorable than Tyr.”

“Yes, Papa. And so, Tyr placed his hand into the mouth of the dread wolf, and he was bound. Tyr sacrificed his hand and his honor. Then, his power grew weaker, for he had betrayed Fenrir and his word was no longer honorable.”

“Yes, yes, and tell me…” He paused to draw in a rattling breath. I squeezed my eyes tight, pulling up a vision of the man my father had been just two years ago. Robust, tall, wide as a ship, loud as a raging bull. A man every man admired. Athletic, proud, regal in his bearing. The man who had taught me to skate before I could walk properly. “Tell me what that story means to you, Tyr.”

Tears ran down my cheeks as the breathing machines inflated his weak lungs. “It means that a man must never break his word to those he loves, lest his power wane. For if you break an oath, your strength will pass to the tree-hung-one and you will be forgotten.”

“That is right.” He scratched my head, his long, brittle nails scoring my scalp. “You must never break your word to me, Tyr. You must honor me as I have asked. You must take care of your mother…” He stopped to breath. His time was short, Mama said. I sniffed up a tear, the salt burning my nose. “You must be the man that walks in my place. Live my dream for me. Marry well. Fill up this house with children. Tend to your mother. Hold the Cup over your head. See that our name is engraved on its side. Do it for me, Tyr, for I have fallen short of my goals, but you are strong. You are the strongest of them all.”

“Yes, Papa, I will do what you could not.”

πŸ’πŸ’‹πŸ’˜πŸŽWeek at a GlanceπŸŽπŸ’˜πŸ’‹πŸ’: 2/10/25 - 2/16/25

πŸ’πŸ’‹πŸ’˜Sunday's Short StackπŸ’˜πŸ’‹πŸ’: Wrapped Up in You by Ella Frank & Brooke Blaine

Summary:
A short Valentine’s Day story by USA Today Bestselling Authors Ella Frank & Brooke Blaine—available now on Passionflix!

Christmas has always been Carter Pierce’s favorite holiday. But with his partner, Dr. Vaughn Bennett, working crazy hours in the ER, it’s difficult to make any kind of plans.

Easter was an appendectomy.
Thanksgiving, a ruptured spleen.
And Christmas had called Vaughn away to work for Doctors Without Borders.

So when the calendar hits February 14th, Carter expects it will be just another day when he kisses his man goodbye so he can go and save the world.

Little does he know that Vaughn has a huge surprise up his sleeve—one that will change their lives forever.

Original Review February 2024:
I'm always on the lookout for stories that have a definite holiday setting, and those with "smaller holidays" such as Valentine's Day so when one crosses my path it finds it's place on my TBR list.  I loved the way the authors made this Valentine's Day romance encompass both V-Day and Christmas.  Fun, clever, heartfelt, and delightful.

My uncle moved away when I was little and was rarely here for Christmas but I remember one year when they planned to come but couldn't so my grandmother put the tree back up in March when they were able to make it. It's not a scenario I've come across in my readings and for bringing back a family memory I want to thank the authors.

I applaud Vaughn wanting to do this for Carter knowing all the holidays the spent apart and to do it in such a wonderful way as to recall some of their most important memories.  Just yummy.

This was another new-to-me author, I've read neither Ella Frank or Brooke Blaine individually nor have I read their collaborations.  I can honestly say that Wrapped Up in You has left me hungry for more and I know I will be checking out their backlists(both individually and together) in the future.

RATING:

Chapter 1
“IT’S A BEAUTIFUL afternoon in Merriborough, and it looks like we’ll be having a white Valentine’s Day after all. Snow’s in our forecast tonight, so if you’re heading out to enjoy the lovers’ holiday, make sure to bundle up and stay safe on the roads. Here’s an oldie but goodie, ‘Cupid’ from Sam Cooke…”

I YAWNEDAND stretched a hand out toward Vaughn, but when I felt nothing but faintly warm sheets, I turned my head on the pillow to see the other side of the bed was empty.

Not again, I thought, sighing as the sound of the shower cut off. Looks like it’ll be another Valentine’s Day alone. That was what tended to happen when you were dating an ER doctor who was almost always on call. Not that I begrudged his job—I was proud that my man helped so many people—but selfishly, I wanted just one holiday together without him being called away, especially since Christmas had been a bust.

Rolling over, I turned the alarm clock on the nightstand off and then hugged the pillow as the bathroom door opened and steam billowed out. As Vaughn stepped into the doorway with nothing but a white towel wrapped around his hips, my eyes fully opened and my cock stiffened because, holy shit, my guy was something to look at.

With his blond hair slicked back from his striking face, the damp strands looked darker than usual as he casually leaned a shoulder against the jamb and his eyes found mine.

“I was wondering when you’d wake up.” Vaughn’s sexy rumble had me shifting beneath the covers, my body reacting to all that I was hearing and seeing. My gaze followed a droplet of water that ran down over his chest and abs, and a low chuckle came from him as he walked out of the bathroom and headed toward the tallboy against the wall, where he opened the top drawer.

“Well, someone set the alarm,” I said as I rolled to my back to watch him go, because the back of Vaughn was just as appealing as the front of him, and as I propped an extra pillow up behind myself, I was glad for it. That towel around his hips left little to the imagination, shaping and molding one of the tightest asses I’d ever seen in my life.

“If I hadn’t set the alarm you’d still be off in la-la land, and I have plans for you today.”

Wait… “So, you’re not going to work today?”

Vaughn glanced over his shoulder at me, and then lowered his gaze down the sheet that was draped across my hips. “No. I decided to spend the day doing something I love.”

I smirked as he winked at me but couldn’t stop myself from slipping down a little further into the bed. “Then why are you putting clothes on?”

He turned back to the open drawer, reached inside and pulled out a box before shutting it, and then wandered back over to my side of the bed. “I don’t see any clothes…do you?”

I eyed the white box in his hands suspiciously. “Presents before breakfast?”

“Technically, you slept through breakfast, sleepyhead.”

“It’s not my fault Dad kept refilling my glass with port while I wasn’t looking. I’ve become a lightweight. Do you still love me?”

“Hmm.” Vaughn sat on the edge of the bed and trailed his fingers over the sheet covering my thighs, and when he got to my hips, I groaned. “I think I just might, Carter Pierce.”

“Then stop teasing me and get back in bed.”

Vaughn chuckled. “But I have something special for you.” He placed the box on my stomach and said, “If you could have anything for breakfast, what would it be?”

“A maple bacon donut from Sunshine Bakery,” I said without hesitation. When Vaughn’s eyes sparkled and he nodded toward the box, I sat up and tore into it with eager hands. Sure enough, one freshly glazed maple bacon donut sat inside, just waiting to be devoured. “You really do love me.”

“I love the way you look at me like you’re looking at that donut right now.”

I grinned, reaching for the back of his neck and pulling him in for a kiss. His lips were warm and tasted faintly like the mint toothpaste he’d used, and I wanted nothing more than to throw him down on the bed again and dirty him back up. Instead, I leaned back and searched his face. “Are you sure you don’t have to go in today? What if they need you—”

“My phone’s off.”

My eyes widened. “Is that allowed?”

“It is today. Which means you’re all”—he kissed me again—“mine.”

“Mmm, whatever I did to deserve this, I’m not complaining,” I murmured, but then Vaughn’s lips left mine, and I opened my eyes, a protest forming on my tongue, but Vaughn only shook his head and swiped a bit of the maple buttercream filling from the donut with his finger.

“Food first,” he said, and then he painted my bottom lip with the cream. Before Vaughn could pull his hand away, I sucked his finger deep inside my mouth. His eyes held mine, his pupils dilating as I swirled my tongue around, getting every bit of the filling. When I released him from my mouth with a pop, he bit down on his lip, lust filling his blue eyes. I moved the box just in time, because he dove for me, crushing our mouths together, and as we greedily devoured each other, I reached down and grasped his towel, yanking it off and throwing it to the ground as the rest of the world disappeared…

Chapter One
I was dreaming, that much I knew. The world around me fogged over in a haze. The colors blurred together in that way that only happened in dream. Happiness hummed through me and I purred with delight.

Somebody was holding my hand, pulling me along. We were in a field of flowers, which seemed odd, since I didn't overly enjoy being outside. I wasn't the outdoorsy type, I preferred to stay indoors instead and watch the world happen from the view of a window, curled up comfortably inside my home where it was safe.

The hand tugged, and I followed. I felt safe, loved, cherished. The person pulling me along came into view. They were young, maybe six or seven years old. And I realized then that I was in a child-sized body as well. But this was a dream, not a memory. The boy turned around and looked at me, eyes bright and shining. His smiled stretched across his face and freckles peppered over his nose.

“Come on, Eric. It's not so bad. I'll keep you safe. I promise.”

I knew him. I knew that voice.

Tony.

My best friend. I hadn't seen him in over sixteen years, but that's who he was. My absolute best friend in the world. I still talked to him regularly, but my parents had moved us when I was seven from our human town to Vale Valley, where we lived now, when I’d started asking questions about being a cat shifter.

I’d had trouble remembering to keep our secret, and they wanted me to grow up in a place where I could shift anywhere, be accepted by those around me and not have to worry about hiding my inner animal.

I liked Vale Valley, but I missed Tony something awful.

“I can't,” I said in my dream. Fear crept in, chipping away at my happiness. Not fear of Tony, but of something else… something I couldn’t name.

“Yes, you can.” He tugged again gently. “Stay with me. Talk with me. Trust me.”

“I can't. I want to, but…” How did you tell your human best friend that you could turn into a cat?

No. There wasn't a place for Tony in my life, at least not physically. Not in the way that I wanted him to be.

I couldn’t completely let go of him. It might have been selfish, but I didn’t care.

The dream started to fade away as I was pulled back into reality.

I tried to hold on to it a little bit longer, moving my legs, trying to go back to him. I gripped his hand tighter, but it slipped from my grasp. The world dissolved around me.

“I’ll find you,” Tony shouted. “We'll find it together.”

“Find what?” I asked.

I opened my eyes. I was in my bedroom. Where else would I be? Certainly not in a field of wild flowers with my childhood friend. I sat up and rubbed my eyes with the heel of my hand and then stretched. Arching like, well, a cat, since that’s what I was.

I checked my watch. Quarter to eight. Damn. I had just enough time to shower, get dressed, and run down the stairs to the studio before my first session.

Much to my father’s worry, I’d rented a small building in bustling downtown Vale Valley. The first floor was my photography studio, name still undecided, and upstairs was my comfortable two-bedroom, one bathroom and tiny kitchenette apartment.

My budding photography business had slowly started picking up more clients. Today, I had a paternity photo session that would last several hours, then later I had a family session at the lake. It was still winter, but the lake stayed warm year-round thanks to magic. After that, I’d have a full day of editing on my computer, which I looked forward to. At least the editing I could do from home, curled up on my couch with some warm milk with maybe just a dash of chocolate.

I couldn't have chocolate in large amounts, because, well, I was a cat shifter, but just a little bit was good.

I didn’t have time for breakfast and wouldn't get a chance to eat until lunch. Usually my omega dad came by the studio with an extra sandwich that he just happened to have. He always made a tuna salad sandwich for me and my alpha dad. They were our absolute favorite.

I stood and padded my way into the bathroom and turned on the shower. I took a quick one because, well, I hated water. It was much easier to just clean myself in cat form, but that never transferred well when you shifted back, so I endured.

After my shower, I headed down to the studio, fired up my lights and my coffee pot and waited for my clients to arrive. The paternity session would be a first for me, and I hoped that it would spark some interest from the community in the photography services I could offer. The couple was a newly mated pair, expecting their first child. Ren was a reindeer shifter and owner of Sweet Bites creperie. Max was a snow leopard shifter, and I wasn't quite sure what he did. Carpentry work, or something like that. He kept to himself mostly. I knew Ren quite well because he was friendly, and I went to Sweet Bites regularly for his amazing crepes.

Ren’s belly was growing by the day and today I hoped to capture a few sweet moments between the two in both their human and shifted forms to commemorate the experience. Ren wrapped me in a big hug when he arrived at the studio. Max walked in behind Ren, hands in the pockets of his jeans. He nodded at me but didn't say much.

I let Ren pick out whatever props he wanted for the session. Ren stood in front of the pale gray backdrop, cradling this belly. He lifted a hand and waved his mate over, practically bouncing where he stood.

“Come on. Come on. Let's get this going. The faster we get these done, the faster I can see them.”

It was hard not to smile at his excitement. I just hoped that whatever photos I took met his expectations.

I took a few shots with them in their human forms standing together, cradling Ren’s belly, kissing, being immensely in love. We even got Max to get down on his knees to kiss the belly. I could tell that the two of them were going to be great fathers.

“Do we know the gender yet?” I asked.

“It's a girl,” Ren said.

“Congratulations.” I smiled, but it took some effort. I wanted to slap myself for being jealous of a couple who deserved all the happiness in the world, but that didn’t stop me from wanting what they had. Love. Vale Valley was a place that only those seeking love and a home could find. Apparently, my mate was taking the scenic route.

Thinking of love always made me think of Tony. And after my dream this morning, he was fresh on my mind anyway. I’d debated inviting Tony here, but how in the hell would I explain shifters to him? Even if he could find the town, would he accept it? Accept me? Logically, I knew that if he found Vale Valley, that would mean that he would accept me as I was. Magic protected the town from outsiders. But my heart couldn't take it if it turned out that he couldn't find Vale Valley. That would mean that he wasn't mine and we weren’t meant to be.

After I took a few pictures of Ren and Max in their human form, Max shifted into his snow leopard and I took a few with him as a snow leopard and Ren as a human. Then I took several with Ren in his reindeer form. I couldn't wait to put these on the computer and start editing.

Being a new, small business meant that I could edit them today, instead of having to wait a few days while I edited other photos. If I worked well into the night, I could even edit these photos and the family session I had later. If I provided a quick turnaround, then word would spread and soon I'd be so busy I wouldn't know what to do. I doubted that would happen, at least not overnight. I knew it would take a while to establish my business, but I could dream.

Ren wrapped me in a big hug when we finished.

“Thank you so much,” he said. “I can't wait to see these and as soon as she's here, you'll be the first one we call to do the newborn session. Would you be willing to come to the hospital and take pictures of the birth?”

I couldn't contain my surprise. “Um. That… Um… I’m not sure…”

Max spoke up. “Ren, we really don't need anyone else in the delivery room.”

Ren sighed and rubbed his belly. “I guess you're probably right. But newborn session for sure.”

“Yes,” I said. “I can definitely do that, no problem.”

Dodged that bullet. I wouldn’t say no to the gig, but that didn’t mean I’d look forward to it either. The only birth I wanted to attend would be my own child’s.

***

My omega dad showed up later, he brought me my favorite tuna salad sandwich. We sat in my apartment upstairs.

“How are things going at home?” I asked.

He shrugged. “Same old, same old.”

“You guys miss me yet?” I’d only just moved out on the first of the year, and it was the first of February now.

“Of course we do,” he said. “But this is good too. You need to be on your own. And your dad and I could use some time to ourselves.”

“You’re not being struck by empty nest syndrome?”

My omega dad smiled at that. “A little bit here and there. Honestly, it's more your father than me. I think he would feel better if you were mated.”

I rolled my eyes. “Don't you think that I would feel better if I was mated too? But you of all people know you can't force that kind of thing. I'll meet my mate sooner or later.”

He raised an eyebrow at me. “Been practicing that speech?”

“Yeah,” I said. “It's the same one you've given me for years. I'm hoping that if I throw myself into my business and building that up, then it'll take my mind off the fact that I haven't found him yet.”

“It'll happen,” my omega dad said.

“I know. This time of year is just a little tougher than normal. Everywhere I turn, there's a newly mated couple expecting their first kid. And now with Valentine's Day.” I rolled my eyes. “Everyone's in love.”

“Yes. That's what Vale Valley is all about.”

“I know.” I sighed and stared off into space for a bit.

I must have started off for longer than I thought because my dad cleared his throat. “Everything all right?”

“Yeah.” I shook my head to snap myself back into reality. “I just had a weird dream last, night about Tony.”

“Your friend from when we lived in Portland?”

“Yeah.”

“How’s he doing?”

“Fine. Better than fine. He’s jet-setting across the world. He just got back from Australia I think, and he’s going to Egypt next.”

My omega dad put his hand over mine. “I know you miss him. You care about him an awful lot.”

“Yeah, but I haven’t seen him in person is nearly sixteen years.”

“You could—"

“Let's change the subject. What are you and Dad’s plans for Valentine's?” I asked.

He looked like he might have pushed the issue, but decided not to. “That's like two weeks away. How am I supposed to know what our plans are?”

“Do you think he's planning something fun? This will be your first year without me in the house. It’s Dad’s favorite holiday. Surely he has something exciting in mind.”

“Whatever it is, I'm sure it'll be amazing as always. Remember that year he prepared every meal in something heart shaped? Heart shaped pancakes for breakfast, heart shaped noodles, and a heart shaped pizza for dinner?” Dad asked.

I grinned at the memory. “Oh, I remember. I was ten and thought it was so fun to help in the kitchen. Two hours into making the homemade noodles, I wanted to quit.” It had been amazing though. My omega dad had been surprised, and most importantly, he’d been happy.

“So, how did your morning session go?”

“Good,” I said between bites. “I'm really happy with the shots I got, and Ren wants me to do a newborn session when the baby arrives.”

“That’s great! What do you have this afternoon? That family session by the lake?”

“Yeah. They want to do a few pictures by the gazebo and then go down to the lake for a couple more. Should be interesting.”

“What family is this?”

“Rafe Montgomery, his daughter Grace, and his two mates, Jason and Chris.”

“That'll be fun. I didn't know he was mated now.”

“Yeah, his two mates came stumbling into town around Christmas time,” I said. Lucky bastard. He had been mated before, but his mate had passed away and he had been alone with his daughter Grace.

My dad touched my shoulder. “You'll find yours, too, Eric.”

“I know,” I said. “And I'm happy for him. He deserves it. Him and his daughter both. I think his omega mate is expecting too, but I'm not sure.”

“That’s exciting.” My dad gathered the empty Tupperware containers that he’d brought our lunch in. “I’ve got to get going. If you need anything, just let me know.”

“All right. Thank you for lunch. You know you don’t always have to bring me food, right?”

He smiled. “I like to bring you lunch.” He looked at his watch. “And now I need to bring your dad lunch, too.”

“Good idea.” I waggled my eyebrows. “Get a little afternoon nookie.”

My omega dad rolled his eyes. “That's inappropriate.”

I barked out a laugh.

He gave me a hug and left, and I was alone again in my apartment. I checked my watch, I had exactly thirty minutes before I needed to head out the door to the next session. I downloaded the images from the morning session and got a new memory card to put in my camera for the afternoon. I also grabbed fresh batteries. I might as well arrive a little early. I could snap a few landscape photos for stock footage. Those always came in handy.

When I was finished for the day, I closed the studio, grabbed my laptop and trudged upstairs to my lonely, empty apartment. I turned on the kettle to make tea, then picked up my favorite cozy blanket and snuggled on the couch. I figured I could get a solid two hours of editing done before I'd let myself turn on the TV. Then I could work while watching some sappy movie on Netflix. Surely there were plenty of romance movies up for Valentine's since it was only two weeks away.

The pictures of Ren and Max turned out beautiful. I managed to capture the love between the two of them. It wasn't that hard, considering that it practically poured out of them.

I picked out my favorites, did some lighting and effect changes, then posted sneak peeks on my website so they could check them out. I selected a particularly good one of Max in his snow leopard form, huddled close to Ren in his human form and decided that I'd use that as a print in the studio. I only had a handful of sessions with actual clients, so the studio was a little bare as far as portrait displays went. I needed photos to fill up the space.

I was taking a sip of my tea when a knock sounded at the door. Who in the hell was that? I looked at the time, it was just past nine o'clock. I checked my phone, no one had called. So, who was visiting? I ran down the stairs and stopped dead in my tracks.

There was my childhood friend, Tony, standing outside my door. All grown up with a wide grin across his face. He waved his hand like a madman.

“Let me in, Eric.”

I hurriedly flipped the lock, and let him in.

“What are you doing here?” I said, then threw my arms around him.

He hugged me back, squeezing me tight.

“I just needed to see you. I thought maybe you needed to see me, too.”

I pulled him inside, then locked the door again. “How did you find me?”

“Well, I knew you lived in Vale Valley and you just opened up the studio. It wasn't that hard.”

That was an understatement. It had to have been extremely hard. Vale Valley was literally invisible to anyone unless they needed a home. The fact that he had found it so easily meant he needed a home. Or love. “Is everything all right?” I asked.

“Yeah.” he shrugged. “Got laid off from my job, but that’s no big deal. Just means I have some free time before my trip to Egypt at the end of the month. So, I felt like now would be a really good time to come see you.”

I laughed. “Well, that's great. Not about being laid off, that sucks. But I'm so glad to see you.”

I wrapped my arms around him again and hugged him. It felt so good to be in his embrace. We’d video chatted so many times throughout the years, but this was the first time I’d seen him in person, and I wanted to rub my face on him, mark him with my scent. Mark him as mine. But I knew that wasn't my place. But maybe…

If he’d found Vale Valley, that could mean…

No, I was getting ahead of myself. There was a lot more to talk about before we could go down that road. And likely we’d never go down that road. Too many road blocks in place. I wasn’t the only unmated omega around here, just because Tony found Vale Valley didn’t mean that I was his love.

“C’mon upstairs, you must be exhausted. Are you hungry?”

“No. I grabbed some food a while back. I am tired, though. I've been driving for like twelve hours. I think I lost track of time.”

The fact that it should have been a twenty-two-hour drive from his home to Vale Valley, told me that something magical was definitely afoot. I doubted that he’d driven that fast. Had to love the magic of Vale Valley.

I sat him down on the couch, went to my kitchenette area and grabbed a plate of banana bread. I went back to the couch and sat close to him.

“I'd give you a tour, but this is pretty much it. You saw the studio, which you can see in the morning in better light, but this is my place.” I shrugged.

“It's wonderful,” he said. “I love it.”

“It's home,” I said. “Most importantly, it's not my dads’ house. They’re awesome, but I needed to live on my own.”

“How are they doing?” he asked as he grabbed a slice of bread.

“Good. I still see them just about every day. It's not like I moved very far.”

He grinned at me between bites. “It's so good to see you,” he said. He stared at me, eyes flickering between my eyes and my mouth.

I smiled, and my gaze lowered from his eyes to his lips. I wanted to kiss them so badly, and I had a feeling that he was having the same thought.

“It's good to see you, too,” I whispered.

I didn't have to wait much longer, he seemed to have read my mind. He melted against me as he brushed his lips over mine. It was the briefest of kisses, but it set my skin on fire and my lips still tingled when he sat back. His eyes widened in surprise and he looked away, toward the television.

The menu for Netflix covered the screen. “So, what should we watch?”

I shrugged. “I don't know. Something sappy?”

“Sounds great.” He leaned back and put his arm around my shoulder. I leaned against him, and rested my head on his shoulder, then hit play.

Silas
“Take another deep breath. Feel the cool air fill your lungs completely. Pause.” I said, in as soothing a voice as I could muster. “And let it out.”

I listened to the whoosh of air and watched the foggy mist dissipate as my client, Drew, exhaled into the cold January air. His face was serene, though his cheeks were pink from the biting cold. We were seated on a blanket on a layer of snow that was a foot thick, in a clearing in the woods. Surrounded by nature and peace, it was the perfect place to hold a wellness and spirituality session.

“Thanks, Abosa,” said Drew.

Abosa was my real name, the name given to me by my parents, but only my brothers and my most trusted clients called me that. It was my shamanic name. To everyone else, I was Silas.

“Don’t thank me. At this point you’re doing this all yourself. I’m just here to guide you.”

Drew nodded and smiled. “Are you going to enter your trance today? I’d love to see it.” His cheeks turned a deeper shade of pink. “Sorry if I’m overstepping.” He looked down.

“Not at all! Don’t be sorry. I’m not going to go into a trance now. I did it yesterday and it drained a lot of my energy. I just don’t have it in me to do it again today.”

I reached out and put a hand on his shoulder. My students and clients loved watching my trances, but I was very picky about who I allowed to experience them with me. This was true spirituality, and I didn’t want to be watched like some sort of circus animal. Only those I thought would truly appreciate it were allowed to watch me. Drew met the requirements, but I simply wasn’t in the mood.

Seeing the disappointment in his face, I quickly added, “Perhaps next time. And I think you may be ready to start practicing your own trance.”

Drew’s face lit up. It was moments like this that made the long hours all worthwhile. I didn’t make a fortune as a personal health and wellness coach, but success isn’t always measured in dollars.

“Thank you so much,” he said with a barely repressed giggle of delight.

I shook my head and chuckled. Drew was a squirrel shifter omega. He’d felt a bit apprehensive about hiring me, an alpha wolf, to lead him on his very personal spiritual journey, but I’d been able to put him at ease, and the rest was history.

Now, I bade him a good day and watched him trudge off into the woods. Our session was done.

I sat back down and sighed as I closed my eyes. There was a vision that had haunted me the previous night in my sleep, but try as I might to bring it back, it seemed to be gone for good.

Come on, brain, come on!

I inhaled sharply. I had to remember not to try to force things. Magical powers had to be honed to perfection, and practiced, but trying too hard stressed the brain and soul, and did more harm than good.

In my case, my powers were mind speak and the ability to see visions, both past and future. Unfortunately, I still had to perfect these powers; some days it was easy, and on others, like today, it was a shit-show.

I curled my hand into a fist and struck the snow.

Damn it. That was it for the day. There was no use in trying to force anything.

I got to my feet and started heading toward the woods. Something caught my eye and I tried to focus. I couldn’t look away. A strange feeling of familiarity washed over me as I stared into the eyes of a peregrine falcon perched on a branch. It stared straight into my eyes. I stopped, stared back, and gulped.

Despite its small size relative to other birds of prey, it was majestic and regal in appearance, and its gaze didn’t waver from mine. I continued my march toward the woods, and finally reached the edge, entering via the pathway I took to get here. I took one look back, but the falcon was gone.

* * *

“What happened then?” I asked Julian. I knew it wasn’t polite to ask about his fling, but curiosity was getting the best of me.

“Well, the rest is kind of private,” he said with a wink.

I chuckled at my brother. I knew he’d tell me what ended up happening with the alpha bear he picked up at The Bar the previous weekend (yes, it was actually called “The Bar”). It was only a matter of time before he spilled his guts. He brushed a lock of blond hair out of his eyes. He was my youngest brother; there were four of us in total, and I was the oldest.

“I see. Well, as long as he treated you well, the rest is really none of my business.” I took a sip of my caramel latte and looked around.

We were at Sweet Bites, a new-ish creperie that had opened before the holidays. I’d heard great things about it and about Ren, the owner, so we decided to give it a try. We weren’t disappointed.

“Don’t worry, he treated me well, all right.”

Sure, we were all adults, but I was still protective of my baby brother. He was the youngest, and the most foolish. He wasn’t a dumb guy, necessarily, but he was fucking impulsive, and that tendency had gotten him in trouble on more than one occasion. The rest of us would usually get him out of any mess he ended up in.

“Can I take your order now?”

I looked up and recognized Ren right away—I’d seen his picture in one of the local papers. It hadn’t been a full length picture, though, and now I marvelled at his cute little bump.

“Oh, wow! You must be expecting,” I remarked, ignoring the generally accepted wisdom not to enquire about anyone’s pregnancy or fertility status unless invited to do so.

Luckily, he smiled and nodded. Not offended—what a relief!

“Yes.” He sighed and rubbed his belly. “Just a couple of months now. We can’t wait.”

My heart warmed at his ridiculously happy smile. A thought—no, a vision—interrupted my thoughts. “I bet you can’t. You’ll be very happy with the baby,” I said.

“I hope you’re right,” he replied with a big smile.

“I am. I know.”

I only realized how weird that sounded once he was already gone with our orders. Oh, well.

The bells attached to the door chimed. A scent that was both familiar and delicious filled the air, and I was tempted to turn around and see the new arrival. But I didn’t. I didn’t have to—I knew at once that it was the falcon from my morning session with Drew. He was a shifter!? A knot formed in my belly, and heat spread throughout my body as his scent became stronger with each step he took.

Why did he have this effect on me? I tried to calm down, but the buzzing in my ears didn’t stop. I felt as if the flurries drifting down outside were crowding my brain. Everything seemed hazy and confusing. I looked at Julian’s face, glancing at his mouth. I knew he was saying something, because his lips were moving, but I didn’t understand a word that came out of his mouth.

I looked down quickly, and tried to drown everything out. The wolf in me wanted to grab this man by the neck and drag him home with me, but I knew there was a time and place for everything. I couldn’t very well behave in such an uncivilized manner right after meeting him. It wouldn’t be right.

My eyes kept darting from my latte to my hands, and I knew at once that I wouldn’t be able to resist taking a look at this delicious stranger.

My gaze flitted up to his frame, clad in a snug winter coat. A strand of dark blond hair peeked out from under his hat and his hands were tucked firmly into his coat pockets. He was examining the menu behind the counter.

Although I couldn’t see his face, I knew he was hot and just my type. I could feel it in my bones.

Julian gave me a soft kick to the shin and chuckled. My nostrils flared as I glared at him. I hated being caught!

He raised his eyebrows as he took a sip of his hot chocolate.

“Silas and stranger, sitting in a tree. K-I-S-S—ouch!”

This time, it was my turn to kick him, although I must admit, I didn’t have to be quite so enthusiastic.

Shut the hell up! I mind spoke to him. As a shaman, one of my powers was the ability to mind speak, but only with those whom I’d initiated into a trance at least three times.

Sorry! You’re just being so obvious, he replied.

My eyes stayed glued to the falcon shifter as he gave his order. He turned around, and a shiver went down my spine as I observed his handsome face, with its sharp cheekbones and full lips. He brushed a wisp of hair out of his eyes as he took a seat at a table near us, facing me.

Look up. I knew I couldn’t mind speak to him, but I willed him to look at me anyways. There was something magical about him, and I had a feeling he’d be mine someday soon.

I hadn’t given much thought to relationships in the last few years. I’d had a long one with a wolf omega, but it didn’t work out, and he moved away. I wasn’t shattered, but for some reason I never itched to get back into a relationship after that.

Yes. Finally. His gaze met mine and suddenly everything else disappeared. Julian’s voice faded into the background and all I could focus on was the familiarity in this stranger’s eyes.

“Silas,” Julian hissed.

I looked at him blankly, annoyed that he’d distracted me.

“What is it?” I asked, tapping the table with a quick rhythm.

“Relax. We’ll meet him,” he said in a low voice.

I nodded. We’d better. I wasn’t going to leave without saying hi.

Our order arrived and I ate my Nutella crepe, savoring every bite, all the while stealing glances at the falcon.

He just sat there quietly, eating slowly, looking up now and then. I felt heat in my face every time he caught my eyes.

Julian told me he had to get going, so with great hesitation, I paid the check and stole one last glance at the blond falcon as I stepped outside.

“Whoa!” My arms flailed as my feet went out from beneath me, and the last thing I remembered was a sharp strike to my head.

Trace
As excitingas it was to create a magnificent set for a production, there was something therapeutic and rewarding about tearing it down. So when they decided the original set was to be put ablaze by a dragon, I didn’t cry. In fact, I was the first one who signed up for demolition. Not that it was true demolition. No, I was sure to save what could be saved, dismantling it in a way that could preserve pieces for the future productions that might be able to use them.

Although some days, like today, I’d have been more than happy to be going all HGTV sledgehammer style. I could probably even justify it given that we were two weeks out from production. Dragons and flammable sets should not meet.

I banged and cut and stomped on things with more gusto than necessary. It was official, I was the town’s grumpalupagus to the nth degree, and there was no reason for it. I had a decent job doing what I loved, I lived in a place where I could be myself without having to try to blend in as human, and my rent was nearly pennies thanks to my agreement with Old Man Lucas who wanted his place fixed up now that he retired to somewhere in Florida where the crocodiles thrived. Not sure why he had ever thought Vale Valley was a good place for his beast, but seeing as he had lived here for decades, according to his stories when he hired me, he belonged here then but was anxious to move on.

He also said I belonged here now, which I have to admit was just a wee bit creepy, but almost free rent worked for me. My job was great, but it was hardly hitting the lottery salary wise.

“Hey Trace, you wanna come out to The Bar with us?” One of the actors whose name I still didn’t know called back to me. The Bar was a cool enough place and it was great to be included, but time was of the essence given the catastrophe that was the set design.

“I have to finish this tonight if we want to have any chance of getting things going in the morning.”

A man with a scruffy beard and growing belly wrapped his arm around the actor’s waist. I really needed to learn some damn names. I might be new to the area but not new enough to still not know the people I saw daily.

“Umm, that’s okay.” He gave a sideways nod toward the pregnant man’s head. “My mate surprised me with reservations at the Inn for dinner. Looks like I’m bowing out too.”

“See you tomorrow.” I went back to work only half registering his good-bye. Maybe I’d head out to The Bar on my own after I wrapped things up. The guys from the play would probably be gone by then. The director had demanded they all come in early, earning him a heck of a lot of grumbling, but that had me guessing all night partying was not in their future.

But maybe I could catch up with one of them—possibly even learn someone’s name. Or I might run into another shifter I could connect with. I mean, it’s great that Noah is here, but he has his own family, and intruding on that is awkward at best.

I managed to get the balcony demolished with much more salvaged than I thought possible in only four hours, which was about three hours past when I should have left for dinner. But I was extremely happy with my progress, so there was that. I shut down all the lights and locked up before heading out.

I needed to run. Or a beer. Or a beer and then a run. Yeah I was going to do that.

I zipped up my jacket and headed to The Bar. At first, I thought the name of the place was a joke. Where are you going? The Bar. Turned out, the owner put it on their liquor license after misreading a question, and it was easier to change the name than to redo the license. Or at least that was how the town gossip went. Who knew if any of that were even true.

I still couldn’t get over how weird the town was. But not weird in a bad way. No, weird in a magnificent way. Except maybe the witches. They still kinda freaked me out. From what little magic I’d seen in Vale Valley, I knew there was power I very much never wanted to mess with.

I turned the corner and bumped into a man who was walking far too slowly in the same direction I was headed.

“Excuse me,” I apologized.

“A little snow,” he replied as if on autopilot, then he met my eyes. “Sorry. I mean, yeah, no problem, man.”

I kept going, not wanting to deal with whatever was going on in his head that he didn’t even register my question. Or maybe he was just nuts. Either way, I had places to be. Ha! What a lie. I had no place to be, but a beer and cheese sticks sounded amazing.

The Bar was pretty full when I walked in, so I took a booth and ordered a beer and an appetizer sampler platter. Because why not? I spent the rest of the evening eating and drinking beers, one after another, and watching as people walked out of the place in couples. Even the crazy guy from the corner had walked in and managed to leave with a hotty. That was when I decided I had enough of torturing myself.

If I was going to be alone and miserable, I could do that back at my cabin where I was not surrounded by people pairing off or coming in with their true loves.

Besides, my life was good. There was no point in wallowing because I was alone. I planned to make a concerted effort to make some friends as I trekked home. Maybe having friends could lessen the emptiness I felt inside. Or a dog. I could get a dog. There had to be some dogs that liked bobcat shifters. Right?

Vale Valley is a small town open to everyone in need of love and a home,
where were-creatures, witches, ghosts and many others can live in harmony.
