🎧Audiobook Review🎧: The Killer Who Kept Me by Davidson King

Summary:

Nothing about Em’s life is simple. He’s treated worse than anyone in the house, punished for every minor infraction, and has zero chance of ever escaping his current situation. He dreams that someday he’ll be free of this nightmare and finally find someone who will want to keep him.

That dream may come true sooner than he thinks.

Saros Tancredi is the most dangerous and powerful man in all of Eastbury. The loyalty he has to his family is unparalleled to anything else. When he wants something, he gets it. He rarely worries and lives without fear. All of that changes one night when he’s faced with his own mortality. When it seems like it will all end, out of nowhere, a stranger jumps in and saves his life.

Saros and Em live separate lives in the underworld. Saros is the most compelling man Em has ever known. Em is the savior Saros never knew he needed. When secrets long buried emerge in the midst of a current war, they threaten to tear away any chance the two men have of finding a happy life together.

One thing Saros and Em know for sure—they’re not going down without a fight.

Original Audiobook Review August 2025:
I debated about jumping in on the audio already.  First, I rarely listen to audios that are only 6-7 months after my initial read.  Second, 2025 has sucked in our household since the passing of my mother in January, our air is just so thick with heartache.  Third, my dad's health hasn't been the best and is getting worse which has increased my stress levels so it's been hard to concentrate at times.  BUT, truth is in a way, it was the second reason that told me to go ahead.  This is one of the 3 or 4 books I read shortly after my mom passed and the honestly, Davidson King's words helped me a bit by distracting me with her story, at least while I was reading it so I thought, maybe the audio will do the same.

Sure enough it did!

As for the narration, I don't think I've listened to a book by these two before, Alexander Neal and Parker Douglass.  They did a wonderful job bringing Em and Saros journey to life.  I may not have felt like I was right there in the room as the mayhem was happening but I was definitely pulled in more than just a reader/listener hearing the tale. Definitely ticked the box I title "feel like listening to Suspense". For those who don't know, Suspense is an old radio show out of the 40s and I've been a huge fan/listener/collector of old radio shows since I was 10 so this ticked box may not mean much to many but for me, it's a huge one when listening and reviewing audiobooks.  Setting the scene, grabbing my attention, knowing I would be watching the radio even though there is no picture, yep, these are factors that tell me I found a re-listening experience for years to come.

No spoilers, but if you read or listen to The Killer Who Kept Me, I hope you don't need the emotional distraction I did but if you do, this is the story to help you step outside yourself for awhile(that is if you like mayhem and if you're reading this review I'm guessing you areπŸ˜‰).  If you don't need the life distraction I did, you'll still be pulled out of your world so be sure you're prepared for that possibility, you won't be disappointed.

Original Review February Book of the Month 2025:
I can't begin to express how much I needed this book right now. I'm going to take a few minutes to be a bit personal but I think it helps me express my feelings on the story while sticking to my spoil-free zone reviewing.  With my mother's passing in January my reading mojo nosedived even worse than in 2020 with the pandemic so when I started Davidson King's The Killer Who Kept Me, I knew it would take longer than my typical timeframe.  I'll be honest, I read the first chapter and as much as I was intrigued and excited to find out what level of dangerous, bordering on sadistic, mayhem the author had in store, it took me 36 hours before I got back to chapter 2 and probably another 24 before chapter 3.  Now that had nothing to do with the book or the author but all me.

BUT . . .

When I hit chapter 4, I was having a hard day as it was 6 weeks since my mother's passing so everything brought me to tears but there was something about that chapter that kept me reading and before I knew it I was several chapters in.  Not only had I read more than one chapter of anything at a time for the first time in over 3 weeks, I realized I hadn't teared up , Davidson King had done the one thing that normally only Star Wars has ever been able to do: distract me enough to completely shut everything out and feel a little stronger coming out the other side.  For that I will forever be grateful, Davidson King, thank you.

Now I'll freely admit it still took another 48 hours before I finished the book but oh what a story.  Em(short for November which is absolutely lovely name) and Saros are complete opposites both in nature and nurture.  Em has been mistreated(to put it mildly) his whole life and Saros has family(both blood and found) that love and support him.  First appearances they shouldn't work but they do, it sounds cliche but they complete each other.  You just want to wrap Em up in dangerous levels of bubblewrap and then a soul-crushing Mama Bear hug to keep him safe but I think Saros might do a better jobπŸ˜‰.  The whole cast of characters is just so perfect, from cute and adorable Maeve to nasty and evil Ramsey, each one plays a part to bring this tale together.

I'm going to end here so I don't reveal too much and spoil any of the dangerous and fun mayhem within the covers of The Killer Who Kept Me.  Just so you know, you won't be bored.  Even if you have a good inkling of what might be down the road for the characters, it's the journey down said road that is deliciously heart-pounding.

This author has a unique talent, she can create such danger, mayhem,  retribution, and revenge and still manages to tell a lovely romance full of heart and strength.  I've said it before and I'll say it again(and probably many more times for years to comeπŸ˜‰) this is an author that is a true storyteller, a Seanachaidh(Scotland & Ireland), a Dastango(India), a Griot(West Africa), a Skald(Vikings of Norway and Iceland) just to name a few titles around the world.  If you've never partook in her creative genius then this is a perfect place to start as it has all the elements that will pull you in and keep you hooked.

CHAPTER ONE
“Power doesn’t corrupt people; people corrupt power.”
~ William Gaddis

Saros
It was a beautiful November morning. The sun was out, the air was crisp, my coffee was perfect, and most of all, I was enjoying it in silence. That was, until a door slamming from somewhere in my estate echoed off the walls, followed by stomping feet…That must be Cosmo.

I sighed and readied myself.

Three, two, one.

“Were you even going to tell me you were meeting Frazee tonight at The Sky?”

“Good morning, Cosmo. How are you this morning?”

He rolled his eyes and shot me a strained smile. “Morning, Boss. I’m actually irritated this fine fucking morning, if you must know.”

In this situation, if someone were to walk in on us, they’d likely think it was Cosmo who was the head of this family, feared by many, more powerful than anyone that sat behind the desk in a house made of white. But they’d be wrong. Cosmo was my second in command and my brother-in-law. The fact that he was married to my sister was why he wasn’t choking on his own tongue right about now…and he knew it.

“I’m sorry you’re upset—do sit and have some coffee.” I narrowed my gaze and sneered. “I insist.”

Cosmo sat across from me and poured himself coffee from the carafe. I let him have a moment to collect himself before I spoke once more.

“When you married my sister, you became my brother. It gives you more leeway than anyone else, but if you storm into my house like that again, making a scene, you’ll be walking with a limp for the rest of your life. Do I make myself clear?”

Cosmo swallowed loudly and placed the mug on the table. “My apologies; you’re right.”

“I know I’m right. What if I had someone here? I’d have had to explain to Dafni why you had two black eyes and then when she found out the reason, she’d break your nose.”

Dafni wasn’t violent, but she was tough. She understood this life and how everything we said and did mattered. I loved Cosmo, trusted him like no other, and I knew Dafni did too. So if he forced my hand, she’d know her husband had fucked up.

“It won’t happen again.”

“I know.”

We sat in silence for a beat, and after a breath, Cosmo started over. “Are you going to The Sky tonight to meet Frazee?”

“I am.”

“Why didn’t you tell me?”

I huffed. “Because you have to be at your daughter’s recital tonight. Marco is going with me.”

“This is Frazee, Saros. You can’t just take Marco. He’s a snake.”

I rose from my seat and buttoned my jacket. “We’re all snakes, Cosmo. Frazee isn’t going to try anything seven hundred feet from the ground, in a public place. Marco will be just fine.”

“I’m going.”

I pointed my finger at him. “You’re in more danger if you miss Maeve’s recital.”

“Saros, she’s three. It’s not even going to be dancing—more like little piglets jumping in a circle, smashing into each other. She won’t remember if I’m there or not.”

“Idiot.” I grinned. “Dafni will know, and she’ll serve your balls to you if you’re not there. I’ll be fine. Video the dance for me…but only my niece. I don’t give a shit about all the other little fucklings.”

“Fine, but I’m talking to Marco before you go.”

I waved him away. “Whatever you want.”

He mumbled something under his breath, but I was already out of the room and on my way to the study for a phone call.

The Sky was one of the most luxurious, expensive, and elite restaurants in all of Eastbury. The owner was a friend…well, maybe friend was pushing it. He was a man who’d had a dream and zero money. He’d pitched the idea of The Sky to me, and I’d loved it, loaned him the money, and because of that I was able to eat there whenever I wanted at no cost. Something Fernando wasn’t completely on board with. As the years went by, he’d become quite rich and the bright-eyed man full of hope and wonder had become a pretentious snob. Not to me, never to me, but it was sad to see someone go from beautiful to ugly.

“Mr. Tancredi.” I peered up and saw a grinning Frazee. Technically Barrett Frazee, but for as long as anyone had known the man, he’d simply gone by his last name.

“Frazee, good to see you.” I stood, we embraced, and we settled in.

Marco was near the bar, and I could see one of Frazee’s men close by.

“Shall we get to the business portion of this meeting, or order first?”

I gestured toward the server. “Let’s get food squared away.”

I ordered beef Wellington, lightly seasoned vegetables, and mashed potatoes. I regarded Frazee as he placed his order.

He was forty; his blond hair reached his shoulders and was streaked with gray. He kept himself fit, but the lines on his face weren’t because he smiled a lot. His blue eyes were dim, and the hard life he’d led made many believe he was older than he appeared. He dressed in expensive suits but I knew what he had in the bank didn’t even come close to my fortune.

Frazee and I couldn’t look more different. I was thirty-two, I didn’t have many lines on my face, and the ones I did were definitely from smiling. My hair was black, cut, and styled at all times. My blues eyes were bright because I saw a future that would always bend to my will, and I didn’t let anything enfeeble me.

The server nodded and left us to our beverages. “Let’s cut to the chase, Frazee. You want more territory, money, and power.”

Frazee snorted into his whiskey. “Don’t we all?”

“No. I have all those things already. I don’t call meetings asking for more.”

The other man sat back, the briefest glare crossing his face before he righted it. “You just go and take it.”

I lifted a shoulder. “If I have to. Otherwise, I like to negotiate.”

“Which demands a meeting.”

I snickered ominously and swallowed the rest of my bourbon. “Negotiations happen when the other party wants something from me, and I only agree if they have something I want.”

“And what do I have that you want, Saros?”

Using my first name would be seen as disrespectful if Frazee’s opinion mattered, but it didn’t. He couldn’t bother me because I wouldn’t let him.

“I want accessibility to PTA.”

Frazee’s brows furrowed. “Pell Tennor Airport? But you have other airports.”

I did. But PTA was important. “PTA is a smaller airport, less eyes on it, and as of three months ago started letting flights in from Brazil. A destination I do a lot of business with.”

“I thought you used the ports as well.”

I nodded. “I do.”

Frazee huffed. “PTA is the only area you don’t own, and you want it.”

“I won’t take it from you, Frazee, I just want access to it whenever I require it.”

“I suspected there was something you wanted, otherwise you’d have never agreed to this meeting.”

I beamed at the man. “Now you’re getting it.”

The server arrived and placed our food in front of us and asked if we needed refills, which we accepted. Once she left to get our drinks, Frazee continued.

“There are three abandoned warehouses in Eastbury. You aren’t using them—no one is. I want them.”

“Warehouses are clichΓ©d, Frazee. Not to mention, suspicious as fuck. It’s why no one uses them. They’re watched.”

“If you don’t want them, it shouldn’t be an issue.”

I thought about it as the server brought our beverages. I didn’t answer right away, savoring my delicious meal. Frazee didn’t push me to answer, either.

“What are you using them for?”

He wiped his mouth and met my gaze. “We don’t ask about each other’s businesses.”

I shrugged. “It’s in my territory, and there are certain things I don’t allow.”

“I know what you allow and don’t in your territory; it’s nothing like that. But sharing my business dealings with you isn’t happening.”

I could just tell him no, but I wanted access to PTA and didn’t feel much like going to war over the use of it.

“I’ll give the buildings to you, but if I find out you’re breaking my territory rules, this won’t end well for you, Frazee.”

“And you’ll have access to PTA whenever you need.”

“Deal.”

We finished our meals and spent the rest of the time being cordial, asking about our families…you know, normal things.

One of the reasons I liked doing business at The Sky was that there were no wiretaps. The restaurant was swept every hour. If Fernando got word they’d tapped the place with a warrant, he’d tell me. It was also too high for anyone to listen in unless they hovered with a helicopter, and that would be very noticeable. I had a deal with Fernando: I wouldn’t take a cut after the loan was paid off and he’d keep The Sky however he wanted, and I’d never interfere with the stipulation that my words were safe here.

“Thanks for dinner.” Frazee shook my hand as we stood from the table.

“My pleasure. I’ll get those papers over to you by the end of the week.”

“Good doing business with you, Mr. Tancredi.”

Now I was Mr. Tancredi again. “Same.”

I waited until Frazee had taken the elevator down before approaching Marco. “Tell Benny to bring the car around.”

Marco texted, and we took the elevator to the bottom. Once we got out, I went the opposite direction from the main entrance. I didn’t like being seen unless there was a reason. So, I used the back exit.

Marco and I stepped outside, and the door had just closed when a shot rang out. A second later, Marco fell to the pavement.

Mix well, garnish with peppermint hot chocolate.

Gemini Kisses for the Omega is a 14.5K word , non-shifter, M/M, Mpreg romance, featuring some mischievous twins, a hopeful omega, some knotty fun, and plenty of misunderstandings

Original Review June 2024:
This is another story in Lacey Daize's Mountain Springs Omegas series and what a delightfully fun summer read that won't take long.  Yes, it's a short novella but also because it sucks you in and before you know it you're swiping the last page.

As you can expect with alpha Evan being a twin there is bound to be some conflict or miscommunications that tend to follow twins around.  You want to shout at Kyle to think about it first before sticking his foot in his mouth but then you remember Evan never mentioned the twin so then you want to shout at Evan for leaving that bit outπŸ˜‰.

Despite a few mix-ups due to lack of knowledge, Gemini Kisses for the Omega is fun and very much rom-comy that will make you chuckle, smile, laugh, and just a pure entertaining short journey.

Chapter 1 - Kyle
“Hey Ty, have you seen my hoodie?”

“I threw it away,” Tyler shouted from his room.

I marched down the hall and stood in his doorway, glaring at him. “Why would you throw away my favorite hoodie?”

“Because that cheating asshole gave it to you, and it reeked of him, and you need a new start.”

“I can wash out the alpha stench! It was comfy!”

“And every time you put it on the past few months you got the sniffles. You only stopped crying over the damn thing when it got too hot to wear it.”

“That’s still no reason to toss it!”

He stood from his bed, walked over, and rested his hands on my shoulders. “I’ll buy you a new hoodie, ok. But you need a clean break, which means tossing any fond memory of that alphahole to the curb. You’ve just graduated, and you’re headed off to a new job. It’s time to find a new alpha too.”

I crossed my arms. “I’m done with alphas for now. They’re nothing but cheating knotheads.”

He grinned at me. “Good. Now how about we take that attitude away from your packing and hit the club tonight.”

I slapped my forehead with my palm. “Being done with alphas doesn’t mean I want to go grind against them all night.”

Tyler laughed. “Come on. The movers will be here Monday for your stuff. This is our last chance to have fun before you move out.”

“I’m only moving to Mountain Springs. It’s not like I’m moving across the country. It’s just over an hour away, so we can still meet up a ton.”

“Not the same as down the hall,” Tyler replied, crossing his arms. “Besides, nothing like a cutie like you leaving a bunch of alphas with blue balls to get revenge.”

I sighed. Tyler had been my best friend since we were kids, and I knew his moods as well as my own. I could argue as much as I wanted, but eventually he’d drag me to the club.

“I’m not driving,” I replied. “We’re going to get a ride, and I’ll text when I want to leave before you. That way you can decide if you’re done or if you want to get another ride on your own.”

Tyler held up one fist in victory. “That’s more like it. I hope you haven’t packed your skinny jeans yet. They’re the best wrapper to show off the goods, sure to make all the alphas around you drool.”

“I don’t want them to drool. I want to go, get a few drinks, maybe dance with you if you’re not trying to get a dick shoved up your ass, then come home and finish packing.”

“Hey, you could do with a dick up your ass too. It’s been since the asshole since you got laid, and an omega’s got needs. No harm in a bit of anonymous fun.”

“Uh-huh…” I deadpanned. “Ever hear of babies? They can be a side effect of the whole dick in ass thing yanno.”

“Come on. Pack a rubber in your wallet and make him wear it. You’re far enough from your heat it should be enough. Besides, I thought you wanted babies.”

“Not with some rando from a club.”

“Try it, I bet you’ll like it.”

“Not happening,” I stated. “I’ve gone to that club with you for years and have never gone upstairs. I’m not going to start tonight.”

Tyler sighed. “It’s not as weird as you seem to think, and way better than getting dicked down in some back alley.”

“Yeah, I don’t do that either.”

Tyler huffed his long bangs from his forehead. “And that’s why you let the alphahole stay with you for so long. You’re too stuck in the ‘relationship’ mindset. You need to sometimes treat sex as just sex and not something that only couples do.”

“Yeah, not happening. But you enjoy getting all that instead.”

“Oh I will,” he said with a wink. “Come on, let’s go find you something sexy to wear.”

“Only cause it’ll shut you up.”

“That’s the spirit,” he laughed. “One last blast before my bestie moves out.”

“I’m still mad at you for throwing out my hoodie you know.”

“I know, but I still don’t regret it. You need to forget about him, and this is the best way to make a clean break.”

“Yeah, yeah. Jerk.”

“Just wait. You’ll thank me later when you meet a fantastic alpha who’s not turned off by the reek of the trash who hurt you.”

The club was packed, but I wasn’t surprised. It was the start of summer and everybody was looking for a release.

“Name?” asked the bouncer. “

Kyle Donahue,” I replied, used to the routine ever since Tyler had brought me to the club the first time.

The bouncer nodded and I swiped my license when he motioned to the machine. A moment later my name appeared on his screen.

“Looks like all your waivers are in order. Any changes?”

“I’m moving soon.”

He looked up. “Keeping the same phone number?”

I nodded.

“That’s good enough if we need to contact you” the bouncer said. “Go on in.”

I took a step past and turned, waiting for Tyler, who was right behind me.

He grinned and rubbed his hands together as he walked in. “Ok. Let’s get some drinks and find a place to sit.”

“I’ll handle the table and you get the drinks?” I proposed.

“Sounds good,” he replied. “The normal for you?”

“Yeah.”

“Ok, I’ll find you in a few.”

I looked around and spied an empty table off to one side. Tyler would want something closer to the dance floor, but he’d have to deal. He’d dragged me to the club, and I wanted to not be in the middle of everything.

I slipped onto the bench with a sigh of relief. It wasn’t uncommon for a table to be taken before I could get there, so to get one on the first try was a success.

Table acquired, I glanced over at the bar to see Tyler surrounded by alphas. As usual, he was flirting big-time, leaning towards one while making sure the others got a good view of his ass.

He’d definitely have taken a knot by the time we were ready to leave, which meant that I’d be alone for a decent chunk of the night.

I sighed. I should have known better. I had packing to do.

Then again, Tyler had a point. Even though I was only moving an hour away, I was moving. We’d never had more than a few minutes between us since we were children and he lived in the house across the street. We’d moved to Mount Sable together to attend college, and had shared first a dorm room, then an apartment.

When he presented as an omega first, we’d even hoped that I would be an alpha so that we’d always be together. That was how tight we were.

I really couldn’t begrudge him one last night out, though I wish he’d get our drinks and get back to the table rather than leaving me alone.

I started scanning the club. The ratio of alphas to omegas was pretty equal, so I hoped that I wouldn’t be hounded by horny knotheads while Tyler danced.

My eyes had just drifted back to the bar when my breath caught in my throat.

He was stunning, a gem shining from the garbage of the alphas surrounding him. Dark hair, and only lightly muscled. My cock twitched and I felt slick start near my entrance.

Then he turned, and our eyes met.

I couldn’t look away. I wanted—needed—that alpha. Everything inside me demanded that I let him take me somewhere private and fuck a baby into me before putting his mark on my neck.

A group of people passed between us, breaking the gaze, and it was like all the air suddenly slammed back into me.

I kept my eyes on the spot, but by the time the crowd had thinned my alpha had disappeared.

“Hey.”

I jumped to see Tyler standing next to the table.

“You ok?” he asked.

I swallowed, not wanting to admit that I’d wanted to be fucked by an alpha whom I’d only gotten a brief look at. “Yeah.”

🎑🎭Week at a Glance🎭🎑: 8/11/26 - 8/17/25

🎑Sunday's Short Stack🎑: Two Truths and a Lie by DJ Jamison

Summary:
Games We Play #.5
Two Truths and a...wait, what?!

What happens when drunken idiots, aka your friends, use a silly drinking game to sideswipe you and your BFF with the truth bomb that you’re actually in love with each other?

Truman: You impulsively kiss the best friend you’ve been in love with for ages…then wake up with a hangover—and regrets.

Lyle: You freak out because you’re not gay or bi, before realizing the kiss wasn’t *actually* bad. Then you begin to wonder…should we do it again?

Two Truths and a Lyle is a cute, low-angst M/M romance with two oblivious best friends who are perfect for one another, a town full of quirky residents who get in everyone’s business, and a sweet demisexual awakening.

“Okay, the game is Two Truths and a Lie,” Kevin announced. “Who’s first?”

Calista and Darren put their heads together, conferring quietly. Then Darren straightened, gesturing to Calista. “Ladies first.”

“I’ve never been accused of being a lady before,” Calista said to a round of laughter. She was gorgeous, with curly hair that was a little wild and curves that attracted her a steady number of boyfriends. But she was also one of the crudest people I’d met, always down for a dirty joke or reckless adventure. “But sure, I’ll go first. Okay…two truths and a lie. Hmm. Oh, I’ve got it! Here goes: I’m a Scorpio. I once wrecked my dad’s car. And my two best friends are in love with each other.”

“You’re not a Scorpio,” Tru said.

“Wait, aren’t all the truths supposed to be about yourself?” I asked.

At the same time, Evan said, “I thought I was your best friend. I’m not in love with anyone!”

And that’s when it hit me.

She was talking about me and Tru.

“Drink up, Calista!” Kevin called. “They busted you on the lie. You’re not a Scorpio.”

I noticed no one was suggesting she told more than one lie. Or calling her on the fact she’d told a supposed “truth” that wasn’t her own.

“I’ll go next,” Darren announced gleefully.

My gut clenched. Somehow, I knew what was coming. I glanced around the group playing the game, all ranging in age from about eighteen to twenty-two, all long-time acquaintances or friends. Was this some type of organized effort? Evan hadn’t seemed to know it was going down. So maybe it was just Calista and Darren. But that was still too much.

“Maybe we should head out,” I said to Tru.

“Why? We haven’t even played yet.”

Before I could answer, Darren was announcing his truths and a lie. “I’m a Scorpio. I’m a virgin. And my roommate and his best friend totally need to bone because they are in luuuurrrve.”

There were shouts of laughter, and Calista smirked. “I know you’re not a virgin.”

Hold up now. Calista and Darren? Surely not. At the ooohs and ahhs they started to get, Calista flipped off the room. “Dude, he’s a slut. I don’t need to screw him to know.”

I dragged a hand down my face.

“Wait, hold on,” Tru said. “Ly is your roommate.”

Darren smirked. “Yep.”

“And…his best friend is…?”

Darren raised his brows. “Don’t you already know the answer to that?”

Tru frowned, glancing between me and Darren. “I thought I did. Now, I’m just confused.”

“Join the club,” I muttered, though I suspected we were confused about different things. My stomach was squirming with discomfort as half the eyes in the room fixed on Tru and me. Fucking Darren. I knew he was behind this. I didn’t know why, but I’d find out.

Part of me wanted to jump up and tell him to knock it off. The other half wanted to sink into the sofa and disappear rather than draw more attention to myself.

“Ah, I think I get this game now,” Evan said. “Can I go next?”

Sweet Evan. Sweet, naΓ―ve Evan. I sighed with relief. Finally, the game would move on, and everyone would forget Darren and Calista’s entirely deluded suggestions that Tru and I were anything but good friends.

Hell, I wasn’t even gay. Or bi. So how could I be in love with my male best friend? I barely dated women, much less men. I was too busy working my ass off, trying to prove myself at the construction company Truman’s dad had built from the ground up while my dad did his best to drink himself into an early grave.

I’d always thought Truman would be right there by my side on the crew, making the back-breaking labor more fun. He had a way of turning everything in life into a big laugh. I hadn’t even realized how much he made me smile until he was gone and every day was just one dreary slog after another.

“Two truths and a lie,” Evan said. “Okay. I’m creating my own app.”

That was undoubtedly true. Evan was a classic tech geek, and at eighteen, he already did freelance work for a handful of companies. He didn’t need a degree, evidently, because he’d taught himself everything he needed to know in his spare time.

Evan continued, “I’m dating a girl.”

There was an immediate snort of laughter. Evan had been out as a gay boy for years.

“And…” He glanced guiltily in my direction. Oh no. Not him too. “Lyle and Truman are totally couples goals. If they could only see it for themselves.”

“Et tu, Evan,” I said.

Beside me, Truman gasped. “Evan, you’re dating a girl?”

Evan looked floored. “What? No?”

“The game is two truths and a lie,” Tru said. “If you’re not dating a girl, you told two lies.”

Evan shook his head. “Sorry, guys. But I’m still gay.”

“Well, I’m not,” I said shortly, standing and dragging Truman up by the arm. “I think it’s time to call it a night.”

🎑Saturday's Series Spotlight🎑: Food Truck Warriors by Beth Bolden Part 2

Full Speed Ahead #4
Summary:
Lennox’s favorite escape is the Food Truck Warriors . . .until it needs his protection.

Ash isn’t running from his past—he’s already left it way behind. He’s built a business from scratch, using all the lessons that his father taught him, and every day at his food truck is a challenge he was born to tackle.

But when a stalker appears, hinting that he knows the secrets Ash has tried so hard to bury, he needs more help than his food truck friends can provide. He needs a professional.

Lennox is a mystery. He’s been coming around the Food Truck Warriors for months now, and nobody knows if that’s even his real name. But Ash is fascinated by the man, and the feeling seems to be mutual.

When the threat to Ash becomes a little too real, Lennox intervenes, and finally, the electricity between them transforms into something very much like love. But now their safety—and their hearts—are on the line.

Wheels Down #5
Summary:
Shaw isn’t his friend—until Ross discovers he’s so much more.

Ross Stanton is having a bad week—a bad month—really, a bad year. But the last thing he wants, after the betrayal of his friend and business partner, is for anyone else to know just how much he’s fighting for survival.

He’s struggling to keep his food truck and to maintain appearances, but what Ross doesn’t realize is that Shaw Finley, the bartender from the Funky Cup, has seen right through his charade.

Shaw offers the couch in his apartment over the bar, suggesting that saving money on rent might help salvage Ross’ failing prospects.

Even though he doesn’t really consider them friends, Ross discovers that Shaw is great to talk to, easy to look at, and he likes him. Late nights and lazy mornings and evenings with only the polished wood of the bar between them lead to an attraction that Ross can’t deny—and that Shaw doesn’t even try to.

But falling in love isn’t as easy as falling into bed together, and Ross isn’t even sure what he feels is love, until he figures out that it couldn’t possibly be anything else.

Ride or Die #6
Summary:
Can Ren’s bad boy heart be wooed and won?

Ren Moretti likes his life—and his hookups—just the way they are: fast and loose.

He only ever hooks up with someone once, and relationships? Forget it. Never gonna happen. No guy has ever persuaded him to bend, break, or alter his one date and one night rule.

Until Seth Abramson.

Seth has always tempted Ren—but it’s not a secret that Seth won’t settle for just one night. A few dates won’t cut it, and he’s not interested in playing around. He wants it all, and he intends to win Ren’s heart.

But that’s the one thing Ren’s never given up. He guards it closely and fiercely, until one day, when he realizes it’s no longer his to protect, it’s belonged to Seth all along.

Full Speed Ahead #4
After climbing into the truck, Ash set his coffee on the counter and checked his watch. His delivery should be here any moment, if they were on time, which . . . Ash had learned practically from the cradle what to do with suppliers who wouldn’t keep to their timelines or couldn’t be relied upon.

They really didn’t want to be late today.

Ash wasn’t in the mood for it.

He glanced out the front window, and froze.

There was a piece of paper taped to it—something that had definitely not been there when he’d closed up last night.

Ash stared at the words, printed in damning black and white.

It was an interview that his father had done—likely one of hundreds, if not thousands, he’d done over the course of his illustrious career. But in this one, he had mentioned his son, Oliver. Who, Stephan Atkinson had said with some humor, liked to be called Ash.

A silly affectation, his father told the interviewer, that he would grow out of.

Ash had been . . . maybe thirteen or fourteen if he remembered correctly, when this article had come out, and he’d been furious. It had been one of the many things he’d been pissed at his father for.

Now someone had found it, dredged it out of the bowels of magazine hell, had photocopied it, and taped it to his window. Not facing outwards, so anyone could see it, but inwards, so only Ash could.

Fury flashed with a frightening power through him. He didn’t hesitate. He grabbed his keys, and with shaking fingers, locked up behind him. Walked around to the front of his truck, tore the paper off, leaving the edges trapped by the neatly placed tape fluttering in the early morning breeze, and forgoing his bicycle, took off for the one place that he’d told himself he would not go.

Who else could have done this? Ash thought angrily as he stormed towards his destination. It was still so early the streets were essentially empty. He’s the only one who knows.

The building that Tony had described was only a few blocks away.

It had been remodeled, with a glass-front office on the lower level, and a living space on the top. There were a separate set of stairs leading to a discreet door on a wrought iron landing.

A discreet black-lettered sign, matching the wrought iron of the stairs and contrasting with the freshly painted taupe stucco of the building itself, indicated that this was the offices of Protectorate.

It might be early, but Ash could see a figure already in the office below.

Tony had mentioned offhandedly that Lennox was a workaholic, always in the office, so it was not a huge stretch to imagine that it was him, up early, and already working.

Ash walked over to the door, and pulled it, fully expecting it to be locked, but to his surprise it opened easily.

Even though he must have been the one to unlock it, Lennox looked up with shock as he walked in.

Ash imagined they probably didn’t get much foot traffic.

He stomped over to where Lennox sat at a desk, and slapped the paper down in front of him.

“What the fuck is this?” he demanded to know.

Lennox stared at the writing. He took his time answering, clearly reading through the words on the page once, and maybe even twice. Finally he looked up. “It looks like an interview that your father did, talking about his restaurants, and also his son.” He hesitated. “You.”

“Yes, thank you, I can read just as well as you can,” Ash bit off. “What I mean is why was it taped to my truck’s front window this morning?”

“Taped to your . . .”

“And not facing out, but facing in,” Ash interrupted. “So I would see it, but nobody else. Someone wants me to know they’ve figured out who my father is.”

“And you think that’s me.”

Ash gestured wildly, pacing between Lennox’s desk, and the other, currently unoccupied. “Who else could it be?”

“Do you really think I needed to do this to get your attention?” Lennox asked, his tone dry.

Wheels Down #5
Shaw removed his glass, replaced it with a full cup of water and ice, and then a moment later he was back, with a plate full of delicious-smelling food.

“Steak and mushroom hoagie, with horseradish aioli,” Shaw said, depositing it in front of him, “and our famous sweet potato fries.”

“They’re famous?” Ross wondered, even as he realized he had heard people talking about them.

“According to our Yelp reviews,” Shaw said. “Can I grab you anything else?”

Ross was about to ask for napkins, because the sandwich looked absolutely delicious but also messy, but then one appeared next to him, like Shaw had known he’d need it.

“I think I’m good, thanks,” Ross said, and picked up the sandwich. It had a surprising heft to it, and he had to give Jackson and Shaw credit—they’d revamped the kitchen and the work they’d put in showed. When he took a bite, he was even more impressed, half a dozen flavors exploding across his tongue as he chewed spiced sliced steak working in perfect complement to the earthiness of the mushrooms.

“You’re nodding over there,” Shaw said, his voice teasing. “Is that a good or a bad thing?”

Ross finished chewing and swallowed. “Really good,” he said. “I’m impressed.”

“Wow,” Shaw said, looking surprised. Too surprised.

“Am I really that notorious?” Ross asked, before he thought better of it. He ate a handful of sweet potato fries and they were really good too. “That picky?”

He didn’t really want to hear the answer; he really didn’t want to hear Shaw’s answer.

“Not exactly notorious,” Shaw said, returning to slicing his lemons.

“Then what exactly?”

Shaw sighed and put down the knife.

“You’re gonna get me in trouble,” he said with resignation.

“I am?”

Ross almost told him to forget it. After all, hearing the truth was probably not going to be all that enlightening and might actually make the next few months of living together uncomfortable.

Shaw smiled then, and it wasn’t the same smile he gave to all the random guys at the bar. It was softer, sweeter, more genuine somehow. Ross had never seen it before, and it hit him somewhere deep, a place where he hadn’t felt much of anything in years.

Maybe the last time had been when his grandmother had smiled at him, over pots and pans and pie dishes.

“You gotta know that you’ve got the best food at that whole lot,” Shaw said. “Objectively. The other food there is good, don’t get me wrong, but those guys? You know why they keep you at arm’s length? They’re all terrified of you, though they’d rather die than admit it. You’re brilliant. You should be working in the best, the fanciest, the most expensive restaurants, and instead you’ve got this food truck and it’s just amazing. Every time I go to Basket, I’m blown away.”

“And,” Shaw continued, leaning over, his blue eyes twinkling again, and Ross’ breath caught in his throat, “you’re gonna get me in trouble, because Jackson would have my ass for not thinking Alexis serves the best food on the lot.”

Ride or Die #6
“You gonna order?” Ren asked. Hoping that he understood exactly what he meant. And he wasn’t talking about sandwiches.

“Oh yeah, I definitely am,” Seth said, and Ren’s stomach fluttered.

There was something so decisive and grown up about this guy.

Like he’d throw Ren over his shoulder and cart him back to his bedroom.

“What can I get you?” Ren asked.

Me. I can get you me. And you’d enjoy every second of it. Trust me. I’m delicious.

“That’s a real good question,” Seth said.

“I’m going to get lunch,” Lennox announced, and nobody was surprised to see him head off towards Ash’s food truck.

“Well, if you want a recommendation,” Gabe said, and Ren wished that his cousin would go do anything else right now, “you can’t go wrong with the Thai meatball crunch wrap.”

“Does everything have balls or buns?” Seth wanted to know.

Oh, Ren wanted to show him.

So badly that he deployed the smile that he usually saved for closing the deal. But then, he was closing the deal right now, wasn’t he? He could feel it in his bones.

Specifically one bone in particular.

“Yes,” Ren said.

“Straightforward,” Seth said, taking a step nearer, and now Ren could really get a good look at him. He was even sexier in higher definition and he’d made Ren’s mouth water even without the close-up look. “I like it.”

“See anything else you like?” Ren decided there was no point in delaying. They were both clearly interested. “Lucky for you, I just happen to be free tonight.”

Somehow, impossibly, Seth’s own closing smile was even more devastating than Ren’s own.

Ren was unmoored. Blown away. Blown apart.

What would it be like to be under him, when he smiled like that?

What would it feel like to kiss that smile off him?

He was going to get to find out. Ren could feel it. Could nearly taste it.

“Really straightforward,” Seth said, not sounding like he hated that at all.

“Why bother pretending that you don’t just want a sandwich?” Ren shrugged. “We’re both interested. I’m free tonight, and I know we’d both enjoy ourselves.”

“What about tomorrow, then?”

Ren had learned the hard way that it was better to always be honest about his intentions. But this guy, even if he didn’t do one-night stands, was so hooked that Ren knew there was no way he’d ever turn him down.

Ren could feel the other side of the hook, buried in him, tugging him even closer, and he dared anyone to try to resist that completely irresistible pull.

“What about tomorrow?” Ren asked archly. “Why do we have to worry about tomorrow?”

“I’m all about the tomorrows,” he admitted with a shrug. “I’m not here for just the tonights. I want to know there’s going to be a tomorrow, too.”

Ren frowned. “I don’t do tomorrows. Not when tonights are so freaking great.”

“Then I guess I’ll have to make do with just a sandwich.” Seth sounded genuinely regretful, which was why Ren didn’t even register the rejection right away. He’d been so goddamned nice about it. Like he hadn’t wanted to say no.
