⏳Throwback Thursday's Time Machine⏳: A Light in the Darkness by Alice Winters

Summary:

In Darkness #2
Felix
Lane and I are trying out our new normal. Normal means no more car chases, no more drug lords, and definitely no more kidnapping bad guys. All of that is a thing of the past in this new normal(ish) lifestyle filled with family get-togethers and torturous jogs through the park.

I’m even done stealing (except for the cat).

I feel like I have stability for the first time in my life… until my brother comes calling. He wants to repair our relationship, but he brings with him a secret that could cost all of us our lives.

Of course Lane isn’t complaining because thrilling, life-threatening situations are right up his alley. Then, as soon as we feel like we have the situation under control, we realize that someone has been manipulating us from the shadows, forcing us to do exactly what he wants as he drives us closer to a sinister game of life and death.

But I will do anything, even be a pawn in some game, to protect the man I love.

Original Review February Book of the Month 2020:
Felix and Lane just keep getting better and better.  From navigating their ongoing love, the drama of Felix's brother, the the complete awesomeness of Lane's family, Felix's penchant for finding trouble, and of course their wicked banter there is absolutely nothing to not love.

It is characters and stories like Felix and Lane that I've come to classify as "snark and cuddle".  By snark and cuddle I mean they pull no punches in their banter and dialogue but you never doubt for even a split second that it comes 150% from the heart.  They appear to fight and get on each other's nerves but it's done with such deliberate tones of love that it's just a part of who they are, without the banter the love wouldn't be there.  To some people it comes across as mean and spiteful but as someone who grew up in a household with that kind of banter(on a much smaller scale of course) I can spot it a mile away which is why I loved these two men from the very beginning.

As for Felix's brother, well the less I say about him is probably better because Darius is the kind of character you have to experience to understand.  Don't get me wrong, I wanted to hate him, I wanted Felix to get Lane to "work his magic" but I couldn't help but feel there was more going on then what the author was letting us see and boy was there more going on!  That's it! No more in that department you'll get from me other than: when you thought it was over it is so not done. #sorrynotsorryπŸ˜‰πŸ˜‰

I had been hearing great things about Alice Winters' work from friends who's opinions mattered to me and I respected but I never took the plunge until this past November when book 1 came up in 2 different posts I made in a FB rec group.  I absolutely LOVED IT!!!!  Because of the holiday I only read book 1 but 2 & 3 were at the top of my 2020 list.  Now I'm off to read book 3, can't wait to see what's next for Felix and Lane.

Original Audiobook Review September 2020:
I really loved this series, such fun characters, I can't imagine Felix and Lane behaving any differently. Their connection is brilliant and just jumps off the page at you, I won't say any more to the plot but I will that Joel Leslie really makes their snark and cuddle moments even more of a delight. I don't know what the author's plans are for the pair as to future installments and more zany suspense but I know that I will definitely be reading and listening to them all.

RATING:

Chapter One
“Lane!” I scream.

I don’t know where he is, but I can’t get up. I can’t move.

“Lane!”

I might die here if he doesn’t reach me in time.

“What?” he asks as he steps into the living room. He’s a little hesitant as he walks in since he’s still trying to remember where everything is in his parents’ house. Even though he lived in this house as a child, it’s been hard for him to remember the placement of everything now that he can’t see any of it. Probably because he’s so old it feels like a lifetime ago that he lived here.

“What happened?” he asks.

“I ate so much that I can’t move,” I moan from where I lay on the couch. I peek over the armrest to get a good look at him. The first thing I notice isn’t his handsome face covered in just the right amount of stubble. It isn’t the sunglasses that he insists on wearing even when we’re at home. Nor is it his dark brown hair that seems to have a mind of its own. What I do notice is how sweaty he is. He’d been working out on the treadmill in the basement, and now his clothes are sticking to his chest, giving me a very nice view of his muscular frame. “Why is your mother’s cooking so good, Lane?”

He shakes his head, clearly disbelieving the fact that I may die after consuming too much food. “You’re going to turn into an Oompa Loompa if you don’t slow down,” he says.

I snort. “Thanks Lane, you’re the sweetest. I love you the most!” I say sarcastically.

“You do understand that just because she cooks it, doesn’t mean you have to eat all of it, right?” he asks as he slowly walks further into the room.

“It’s like hibernation. I’m creating a fat storage for when we move out and have to go back to starving,” I explain since my cooking is anything but edible. With a yawn, I stretch out my arms just as he touches the back of the couch.

“Well, you’re doing a splendid job of it because I went in to grab a cookie, and the cookie jar is empty. How many did you eat today?”

I watch his handsome face as he leans over me. He may not be able to see me, but he sure can scrutinize me when he thinks I’m not being honest. But I notice that there’s a slight upturn to his lips that makes it hard to keep my grin at bay. I kind of want to lean forward and capture those lips as my own.

“How many what?” I ask innocently. I’m not sure how he could point fingers at me when there are two other people staying in this house.

“How many cookies have you eaten?”

“In the past…five minutes? Or today?”

“Just choose.”

“Lane, I don’t like you making me feel bad about myself,” I say as I push my blond hair out of my face. Lane reaches down and touches my chest before feeling his way to my stomach and patting it.

He looks thoughtful as he feels it over. “That’s weird…it’s about the same size as the cookie jar,” he says.

I laugh and push his hand away. “No! Your mom said I could have them!”

He shakes his head in disbelief. “I heard the phone ring, who called you?”

I sit up as I grimace. “The realtor called, but I told her that we don’t need any of the lies she’s selling.”

“A house? The lie of a house?” he asks.

“Lane…I don’t want to leave,” I say as I look around the quaint living room with its walls smothered in pictures of the family.

If there is a span of the wall twelve inches wide that isn’t covered by a picture of someone in this family, then I’d be willing to bet my right hand that the photo fell down and Lane’s mother hasn’t gotten to putting it back up. It was cute when I first walked in, especially getting to see all the photographs of a young Lane, but the family photo in the bathroom that I have to look at while taking a shit is a bit too much. Yesterday I put a post-it note over everyone’s face in the photograph, and the others must think it’s an improvement because no one’s fixed it yet. Besides the family pictures, there are way too many sunflower decorations, but if I’m being honest, I love every inch of it. Even the picture in the bathroom.

“We can’t live with my parents,” he says.

“Says who? You? Because your mom said we can live with her forever, and I think she meant it.”

He grins as he shakes his head. “She was just being polite.”

“Lane…she loves me,” I say defensively. “Yesterday she bought me Gushers. Have you ever heard of those things? They’re like…gooey on the inside and absolutely amazing.”

“Yes, I’ve heard of Gushers before. So what time are we meeting her?”

“Three,” I say grudgingly. “We’ll leave in about twenty minutes to pick up Copper.”

“Then I better go get a shower,” he says as I stand up. “Can you pick my clothes out for me so we can keep moving?”

“Sure,” I say as I stretch again. These past few weeks have been good to me even though my body has begun to complain about inactivity.

“Thanks,” he says as he reaches for me, most likely to hug me, but I dodge him like the plague.

“I love you, Lane, really I do, but right now you’re past the point of attractive and into the field of disgusting. Way too sweaty,” I say with a grimace because I feel like we are definitely at a good enough point in our relationship where I can tell him how disgusting he is. He’s past the sexy, slightly sweaty version and into the disgusting, don’t touch me version.

“You won’t hug me?” he asks, looking offended.

I can tell he’s joking, but I wrinkle my nose as I stare at him. “Absolutely not.”

“Really,” he says, like his feelings are hurt. “Come on. Give me a hug.” He grabs for me so I scamper away.

“No! Go away!” I say. “I’m getting changed.”

“What? You mean you’re actually going to get out of your pajamas?”

“I feel like you’re being very critical when I’ve needed this time to recover,” I say. “I need to recover from all the shootings, the running, and all that other junk I would like to never think about again.”

“You act like we’ve only been here a couple of weeks. You’ve had a lot of time to recover.”

“Lane,” I say warningly.

“I’m sorry. I’m sure you look very sexy in those pajama pants,” he says.

“They’re your mom’s, so thanks,” I say.

“I don’t know how I feel about that,” he says as his eyebrows furrow.

I laugh and head back for his bedroom.

*****

I pull up to a small brick building with a large painting of a dog overlapping the door. It’s neat until someone opens the door, then it looks like the dog has a big gaping hole in its face.

“I’ll run in and get him since whenever Ned gets a hold of you, he won’t shut up,” I say.

“Good plan,” Lane says, so I get out, leaving the car running.

We had decided that instead of getting Lane a different dog, we would use our dog Copper as a service dog. Since Copper had been trained to be a police dog when he was young, he already has a large range of commands and knowledge. So, a man who works with service dogs agreed to do some private training with him. It was also easier to get Copper registered as a service dog than to get on the waiting list for a trained one, so now all we need to do is teach him a few of the commands.

This is Copper’s fourth week working with Ned, and I’m already not really fond of the man. He’s amazing with Copper, but I’m not sure he likes me or maybe we have a difference of opinion. I drop Copper off in the morning and pick him up later in the day at least three times a week, and he works with him throughout the day. I miss my little Copper when he’s gone, and Lane has to remind me that I have to share Copper when he returns.

I push through the door, into the office area and walk inside to where I notice Ned rushing on by. He’s a lanky man who seems to have one speed.

“Hey, Felix!” he says sounding joyful, like he’s forgotten that the last time he saw me, he chewed me out.

“Hey,” I say with a forced smile. I do not forgive as quickly. “Copper good?”

“He’s fantastic. He picks everything up with ease, and you can tell he loves having a job. At home, I still want you guys just to be working on that follow command. He understands it pretty well, but don’t forget that when he follows, you click and reward.”

“Got it. That’s awesome to hear,” I say with a smile.

“I’ll go get Copper,” he says before disappearing through the open door. He returns after a few minutes with the black German shepherd at his side.

Copper’s tail starts going a hundred miles an hour when he sees me, and no matter how much I want to drop to my knees and pet him, I’m not allowed to say anything to him. The first time we came to pick him up, I greeted Copper with love which in Ned’s eyes is a “preposterous” thing to do. He assured me that I would ruin the dog by giving him such joyous affection as soon as I see him, so I keep my eyes on Ned and take the leash without a word to Copper.

I see Copper’s tail begin to slow as he looks up at me in devastation, black ears falling like he thinks I’m upset with him. “Thanks,” I say grudgingly.

“See how much calmer and wellbehaved he is when you greet him properly?” Ned asks.

“Totally,” I lie as I lead Copper to the door. “See you Monday.”

“Have a good night.”

“Thanks, you too,” I say as I lead Copper out to the blue four-door car. I open the back door and send him inside before getting into the driver’s seat. Then I turn to Copper who is already crawling over the middle console onto my lap. “Aw, my sweetie pie. Did you have fun today?” I coo, and his entire body wiggles as his tail whaps Lane mercilessly across the face.

Lane laughs as he pushes Copper’s tail down. “Didn’t he tell you to stop babying that dog?”

“Yeah, well…he clearly doesn’t understand love,” I say as I glance up at the building and see Ned standing in the doorway, watching my deplorable display of affection.

“Shit, shit, Ned’s watching us, Copper, get back,” I say as I shove him in the back. “Play it cool.” I wave to Ned who is staring at me with clear disapproval on his face. “I think he’s pretending like he doesn’t see me.”

“Now I’m going to have to hear all about it when I see him again,” Lane says.

“Oh well,” I say as I put the car in drive and gladly pull out of the parking lot. Even when it’s long behind me, I can still feel Ned’s stare and judgment.

I glance down at the GPS as I turn out onto Main Street. “You sure we can’t live with your mother forever?”

“I lived with her for twenty years, it was enough,” he says. “We need to get a house.”

“We do?” I ask skeptically. “Last I checked, I definitely don’t have enough money to buy a house. Or do you mean you’ll buy it, and I’ll just live in it and mooch off you?”

He nods. “Yeah, that one.”

I grin as I turn where the GPS tells me to. “Yeah…I thought so.”

“You can work it off,” he says.

“Oh, you mean like sexy time,” I say with a grin.

“No, like by cleaning and taking care of the lawn and stuff.”

“What else would I have meant by sexy time?” I ask. “You should see the way I tug on that push mower.”

He looks slightly concerned when I glance at him. “Hmm…is that supposed to be sexy? Sometimes I really can’t tell with you.”

“Good, I like you on your toes,” I say.

“Your destination is on the right…”

“Here we are,” I say as I pull into the driveway of a gorgeous one-story home. “Ooh…I like it.”

“Why? Is it just like a little hole in the ground with a tiny round door?” he asks.

I slam the car in park as I look over at him. “Ha ha. It’s not a hobbit house,” I say.

He grins. “Well, I just thought that’s where you’d be most comfortable.”

“Again, I am not the size of a hobbit.”

I notice the realtor get out of her car and wave to us, so I smile and wave back.

“Come on,” I say as I get out.

I walk around to Lane’s side of the car as he gets out. Opening the back door of the car, I call Copper out before reaching in for his leather harness which I press into Lane’s hands. We’ve only started working with the harness, so Lane’s still a little uncertain of it. He feels it over to make sure he has it facing the right way before holding it out and, without prompt, Copper pops his head through the harness. Since Lane is still trying to juggle the harness, the dog, and the leash, he fumbles for the clicker Ned gave us. When clicked, the noise signals positive reinforcement so the dog knows that he did the correct thing, and then he gets a treat.

I could help, but Copper patiently waits until Lane finds the clicker, hits it, and then gives him a treat.

“This is a mess,” Lane says as he just drops Copper’s leash. “I can never find this stupid clicker. The dog probably thinks it’s getting the click and treat for just standing there.”

Reaching down, I unhook the leash and toss it into the backseat. “What if I find a way to strap it to your belt or something? That way it’s always in the same spot, because I’ve literally seen you stick it in your pants, your coat, the treat bag, and the pouch on the harness.”

“Good idea,” he says as he reaches down to Copper and feels him over before running the strap of the harness between his legs and hooking it. “Is it on right?”

It looks good to me, so I shrug. “Yup,  let’s go,” I say as I walk up to the realtor. Today is our third time meeting and the second time she has shown us houses.

“Good afternoon,” the realtor says with a smile. She’s an older lady with gray hair that looks like a ball of cotton on her head. “I really think you guys will like this one. It has three bedrooms and two bathrooms. I think you guys were leaning toward more of an open plan and that is what this is.”

She heads for the front door, and Lane tells Copper to “follow.”’ He doesn’t miss a beat as he starts following the realtor. Whether it’s because he really understands the command or because I’m walking with them and he just wants to follow me, I don’t know. But we rave how smart he is and give him a treat which he swallows without chewing.

The realtor unlocks the door and pushes it open before walking inside. I shut it after us and look around the living room.

“The living room, dining room, and kitchen are all one big room which I think you’ll like, Lane. It gives you plenty of nice open space, and you don’t have to worry about walls or steps.”

I’ve been inside for a total of twenty seconds, and I’m already in love. “Do you think Lane and I could just walk through it?” I say. “Then you can tell us all of the specifications?”

“Of course!” she says. “I’ll step outside and check out the garage. You let me know when you’re ready.”

As soon as she leaves, I reach out for Lane’s free hand. When he feels the nudge of my hand, he holds his out and I slide my fingers between his, gripping them tightly.

“You like it, don’t you?” Lane asks as he squeezes back.

“I love it,” I admit. “As you walk in, it opens right up into the living room. They have their couch pushed back against the wall here with one of those electric fireplaces in the corner. Stone surrounds it, and there’s a wooden mantel above it. To the right of it, they have their TV which I think is really the only good spot for it. Then as you walk in further, it opens up into the dining room. There’s a table here, but to its right is this little alcove with a big bay window and a bench big enough to lie on.”

“Oh yeah, that’d be a nice spot for reading.”

“Oh…yeah…that’s what I was planning on doing there,” I say and Lane snorts.

“Oh? Have a better idea?” he asks as he waggles his eyebrows.

“Yeah, like stuff my face with your mom’s cookies.”

“Yeah…that’s definitely not where I thought you were going with it. Just really put a damper on my idea when you started with ‘stuff my face with your mom.’”

I laugh. “Gross. So…back with the tour now that I feel nauseous…here’s the kitchen. The counters are all along this wall, but there’s a bar here with stools.”

I turn to the hallway and head down it. “First room on the left is the bathroom. Pretty simple really, sink and toilet on the left and the bathtub on the right.” We leave the bathroom, and I take him into the first room which they’re using as a kid’s bedroom. “Bedroom, looks like we could use it as an office or something. The walls are a pretty nice black too.”

“Oh? Kind of like your heart?”

“That must be why I feel at home in here.” I head into the master bedroom and look around the roomy space. “It’s huge. You could fit like…five of my bedrooms as a kid in here!”

“That’s because you lived in a little hobbit hole.”

“Funny.”

He grins. “Then the second bathroom is off this room?”

“Yeah, it’s right over here,” I say as I lead him into the bathroom. “There’s a whirlpool tub.”

“Ooh.”

“And it’s big enough for like three men,” I say.

“Three?” he asks skeptically. “Why would we need three?”

“What? Who said that?”

He laughs. “I’m not worried.”

“So, what do you think?” I ask eagerly.

“If you like it, then I know I will,” he says.

I don’t know why those words make me so happy, but I can’t help but grin. “You’re so sweet.”

“No, I just want your first experience outside a hobbit hole to be a good one.”

“Oh…Oh ho…well, I’m leaving. I’m going to go tell your mom you got lost, and we’ll probably never find you again and that she might as well adopt me to take your place,” I say, and he grins as he reaches out to me.

He wraps me in his muscular arms and pulls me up against him. “You’d miss me,” he says.

“Just your muscles…them I would miss,” I say as I run my finger down one. “Sure wouldn’t be your horrid personality.”

He kisses my forehead as he squeezes me tighter. “So? You like this one the best?”

“Yes.”

“Then let’s talk to her and put an offer in on it, alright?”

“Sounds good. I offer five dollars, you offer the rest?” I suggest as I look up at him.

He looks surprised. “Five? That’s a whole lot more than I thought you’d offer.”

“Oh, it was the five dollars I took from your wallet, so that’s why.”

“Of course it was.”

“I’ve been slowly replacing the money in your wallet with Monopoly money and pretty much everyone just feels bad for you, so they let you get away with it.”

“The thing is…I’m not sure that’s even a joke. You’ve been folding my money up like origami, and it’s confusing as hell.”

“It’s not origami! It’s like…blind people tricks,” I say.

“One day you’re like, the one dollar bill is the long one then the next, the ten is the long one,” he says.

“Your long one is a ten,” I say with a grin.

“I walked right into that,” he realizes before laughing. “Go get the realtor.”

“Going, going,” I say as I pull away from him. “If I don’t come back, see if this family will adopt you…I’ll take really good care of your mother!”

Leaving Lane behind, I step outside and see the realtor messing with something in the backseat of her car. I take the concrete path out to the sidewalk, and as I step onto it, someone slams into me. I must not have seen him because I’d been focused on the realtor, but the force sends me stumbling back.

“Be careful,” he says, just above a whisper as he steps past.

“Sorry about that,” I say as I look back at the guy. His back is to me, and his hood is up as he waves his hand through the air before continuing on.

For a moment I just watch him, but I don’t know why. I’m so paranoid after the shit with Red. Like someone’s going to grab me and drag me back into an alleyway to threaten me again. I need to get the stuff that happened with Red out of my mind and move on with my life. Hopefully, this house is the fresh start I need so I can stop being suspicious of everything.

“How did you like the house?” the realtor shouts as she realizes I’m outside.

I look away from the man and smile at her. “Definitely our favorite so far.”

⚾️Monday's Musical Melody⚾️: Fake Out by Eden Finley

Summary:
Fake Boyfriend #1
Maddox
The reason I rarely go home is three simple words: I’m a liar.

When the pressure to marry my childhood sweetheart became too much, I told her I was gay and then fled to New York like my ass was on fire.

Now, five years later and after a drunken encounter, I find myself invited to her wedding. And I have to bring my boyfriend—the boyfriend who doesn’t exist because I’m straight.

At least, I think I am. Meeting the guy I’m bribing to be my boyfriend for the weekend makes me question everything about myself.

Damon
When my sister asks me to pretend to be some straight guy’s boyfriend, my automatic response is to say no. It’s because of guys like him people don’t believe me when I tell them I’m gay.

But Maddox has something I need.

After an injury that cost me my baseball career, I’m trying to leave my playing days behind and focus on being the best sports agent I can be. Forty-eight hours with my sister’s best friend in exchange for a meeting with a possible client. I can do this.

I just wish he wasn’t so hot. Or that he didn’t kiss like he means it.

Wait … why is the straight guy kissing me?

*Fake Out is a full-length MM novel with no cliffhanger.*

CHAPTER ONE
MADDOX
Fuck my life.

Staring at a ghost from my past is a slap in the face from reality.

What are the chances of my one and only ex-girlfriend walking into the very same bar as me? And in New York. Chastity-freaking-Wells.

Like any self-respecting twenty-three-year-old guy in this situation would do, I scan the room for an emergency exit.

I need to leave. Right now. I slip off my barstool and throw down cash on the bar, but Chastity and her three friends head straight for me.

Sweat drips down my neck as my gaze darts around the small space in search of an alternative route to freedom. Slasher movie music plays through my head when I realize I’m trapped. Not being melodramatic or anything.

Turning on my heel and walking toward the bathrooms as fast as I can, I get cut off by some drunk guy stumbling into me. He drops his glass and it smashes on the ground, the sound of breaking glass dashing any hope I had of going unnoticed.

When I glance over my shoulder, I lock eyes with the woman I almost married. Ironically, she’s wearing a tiara and veil. Along with a flashing badge and sash that read Bride to be.

Her eyes widen as she recognizes her past staring back at her.

I have to go say hi now, but I can’t get my feet to move. If I make a run for it, she’ll tell her mother, and then I’ll never hear the end of it from my Mom. Gotta love the suffocating gossip mill of small towns.

Chastity and New York do not mix. That’s what she told me when I said I was going to Olmstead University. Right before she begged me to stay.

Every step I take toward my ex-girlfriend, the more memories flash through my head.

Wear this, Maddy. Don’t go out with your friends, Maddy. Go to college in Pennsylvania so we can stay together, Maddy. Everyone expects us to get married when we graduate, Maddy.

Maddy, Maddy, Maddy.

With a deep breath, I plaster on a fake smile as my heart tries to hammer a hole in my chest. “Hey, pretty girl.”

Tears well in Chastity’s eyes. “Maddy? Oh my God, Maddy.” Her arms wrap around my neck, and I get a face full of veil.

She still smells like cherry blossom, and something familiar rips through my gut. Affection. Young love. Idiotic behavior on my part.

The truth is, Chastity didn’t do anything wrong back then. Granted, she might’ve turned a deaf ear to my concerns about our future and my attempts to break up with her nicely, but what I did to her when I left for college was unacceptable. I lied to her and ran away, and I’ve been running ever since.

I didn’t have it in me to be the guy she wanted. I was never the settling down type. I’m still not that guy. Probably never will be.

“Has Halloween come early or is a congratulations in order?” I tug on her veil. I’m proud of myself for sounding like a normal human when I’m freaking out on the inside.

She pulls back, but her hands stay on my shoulders. “It should’ve been us,” she whispers.

The tightness in my chest twists. “You know why that wouldn’t work.”

She wipes her nose with the back of her hand. “I know.”

God, I’m still a shithead. And still lying to her after all this time. I should tell her the truth; I owe her that much. I’ve managed to avoid her every trip home for the last five years, but then I run into her at her bachelorette party?

“We need tequila!” her friend screams.

That’s an understatement. I think I need a silo full.

Chastity’s face lights up. “Stay and drink with us?”

“Umm …” No, I should go. Tell her the truth, turn around, and leave.

But she pulls that face—the one I used to give into so well. Her bottom lip droops, and she stares at me with shiny, puppy-dog eyes.

“I can stay for a drink.” One drink, I tell myself. But I obviously haven’t learned from old mistakes and I’m lying again, because twenty minutes and five tequilas later, Chastity falls into my arms and sways to an imaginary beat that doesn’t match the house music.

“I miss you, Maddy. Maybe this is, like, a sign. Some higher power. Of all the people to run into—”

The walls start to close in. Suddenly I’m transported back to my eighteen-year-old self, and I need to run away. The pressure to marry the girl in front of me—not only from her but our whole hometown—was, and still is, too much.

More lies fly out of me without thought. “I have a boyfriend.”

Chastity’s smile is warm. “Figures. I’d love to meet him.” She gasps suddenly. “You should come. Bring him to the wedding next week.”

Uh … what?

“I’ll text my mom right now.”

“No, no. Don’t need to do that. We … umm …” Of all the times to draw a blank …

“Done. It’s no problem at all. We had two people who RSVP’d yes only to turn around this week and tell us they can no longer make it. You and …”

She waits for me to tell her my imaginary boyfriend’s name, but I remain still with my mouth agape.

“You and your boyfriend can take their places. We’d love to have you. Everyone at home misses you. You never visit anymore.”

Yeah, there’s a reason for that. “Umm, okay.”

Wait, not okay…

Did I really just agree to go home next week for my ex-girlfriend’s wedding? With my boyfriend?

I reiterate what I thought the second I laid eyes on Chastity tonight: Fuck my life.

***

The staccato rhythm pounding in my brain has but one name. Tequila. That cold-hearted bitch.

My head rests on the table in front of me while my usual coffee shop bustles with my worst enemy: people. There are too many people for this time of morning and this type of hangover.

“Shhh,” I say into the table. No one listens.

“Wow,” Stacy says, startling me, and I lift my head. I didn’t hear her come in or sit in front of me, but there she is. With two cups of coffee. I officially love her. “How hungover are you?”

I rub my temples. “On a scale of one to ten? One hundred and twelve.”

She laughs, and her green eyes shimmer in amusement.

“Thanks for the sympathy.”

“It’s self-inflicted. Suck it up.”

“Why am I friends with you again?” I’m officially not loving her so much anymore.

“Because I refuse to sleep with you. Had I fallen victim to your charms when we met, you never would’ve seen me again.”

She has a point. I met Stacy at a frat party freshman year, and she shot me down for six months straight before I gave up trying. Probably a good thing she stood her ground. Stacy is the one constant person in my life. We got each other through college, and then we interned together at the same marketing firm where we work now.

“I found myself at a bachelorette party last night,” I say.

“If you tell me you slept with the bride, was hired as the stripper, or had a three-way with two of the depressed single girls freaking out over their friend getting married, I’m out of here.”

I take a large sip of my scalding hot coffee and swallow hard with a wince. “I have slept with the bride. But not since high school.”

“Oooh, shit. Your ex-girlfriend is getting married?”

I tell Stacy the events of last night and how I’m in yet another situation I don’t know how to get out of.

“Wait, wait, wait. Back this up. Your whole hometown thinks you’re gay? How did that happen?”

“I … I may’ve told Chastity I was gay to break up with her …”

She’s trying to hide her smile. I know she is. “I’m so glad I made the effort to come this morning.” Her glee is my misery. “Even your parents? How does that work, and how did I not know about this already?”

“I haven’t introduced you to my parents for a reason. And you know me—I never get serious with anyone. I keep telling my parents I’m single and haven’t met the right person yet, and I make sure to stay gender neutral in all conversations.”

Her smile finally fades. “You’ve been lying to everyone for five years. I thought you were sad before, but this … this is—”

“You don’t need to say it. I’m a shithead. Tell me something I don’t know. But last night, I’m at this bar and in walks my small-town girl in the big city, drunk off her ass. So, I make my way over to her, and she’s throwing her arms over me, saying it should’ve been us. I have a boyfriend fell out of my mouth. And then …” I blow out a loud breath.

“Then what?”

I lower my voice. “I said I’d go to her wedding next weekend. With my boyfriend.” My head hits the table again and bangs against it repeatedly. Why the fuck did I agree to that? Not that she gave me much choice. That’s exactly how I ended up staying in a relationship with her for three years.

“You what?” Stacy shrieks.

“I was expecting a ‘I was so drunk. Maybe you shouldn’t come’ text this morning. Instead, I’m woken up by a phone call from my mother. Chastity had texted her mom, who called mine, and now everything’s screwed. Mom’s asking why I didn’t tell her I was seeing someone and how disappointed she was to find out from the Wellses. She demanded I come home and bring my boyfriend with me to stay the weekend while I attend the wedding.”

Stacy sniggers.

“Real helpful, Stace. Have you ever had to endure a guilt trip from a small-town mom? I’m surprised by the time we hung up this morning I hadn’t agreed to move home with the boyfriend I don’t actually have.”

She bites her lip. “What are you going to do?”

“Well, I was kinda hoping …”

“I’m not dressing up as a dude and pretending to be your boyfriend.”

I laugh. “I was actually hoping you could convince your brother to do it.” I’ve never met him, but she does talk about him a lot.

Stacy purses her lips. “Damon’s always working or studying. It’s pretty sad. I don’t know if he’ll be able to take the weekend off.”

“He’s a sports agent, right?”

“Soon-to-be, yeah.”

I don’t want to play this card, but it’s all I’ve got. “What if I could get him a meeting with a high-profile hockey player in the NHL?”

Stacy’s brow furrows. “Who?”

There’s a reason I don’t tell anyone I’m related to Tommy Novak. I barely know the guy. He’s married to my sister, who I’ve never been close to, and family gatherings are few and far between. It feels wrong asking him for favors, but I’ll do it if it means Stacy’s brother will help me. “All I can say is he plays for Boston.”

“And you’re really going to go through with this charade if I get Damon to agree? Why can’t you tell the truth? Come out of the closet. But in reverse.”

“It’d be a big scandal if the town found out the truth, and that’s definitely not what Chastity needs right before her wedding.”

“So, you’re doing this for her? She’s your ex. Why do you care?”

I rub my neck. “She’s the only relationship I’ve ever had. I was a dick for lying to her, and I don’t want that to come out during her wedding to some other guy. I figured if I ever found a girl I got serious with—which I’ve always doubted I’d do anyway—that I’d tell everyone then. I’ll tell them eventually, but this weekend is not the time to do it.”

“Why don’t you just say you can’t make it?”

“Do I need to give you the guilt-tripping mom story again? And if I go home and say we broke up, she’ll force comfort food into me and make me stay a week to wallow. That’s the type of mom she is.”

Stacy searches in her bag and pulls out her phone. “I’m on it.”

“Really?”

“I’d love to say I’m doing this because I’m your friend, but honestly? The thought of you having to pretend to be gay for forty-eight hours entertains me immensely.”

Of course, it does.

🐰🎭Week at a Glance🎭🐰: 3/30/26 - 4/5/26

🐰Hoppy Easter 2026🐰

The Omega's Sun-Drenched Easter by Colbie Dunbar
Summary:
What happens when a once-in-a-lifetime trip turns into something unexpected?

Tim is enjoying a spring break cruise when he meets someone intent on hampering his onboard activities. But Owen, an alpha who works on the ship, has misunderstood the omega’s objective, and his actions put the pair at loggerheads.

After an evening celebrating with Owen’s family, the omega orchestrates a stunt which forces both him and the alpha to consider their choices.

While Owen is incensed at his brother’s meddling, he can’t ignore his craving for intimacy. But his fear of change, pushes him and Tim further apart.

The alpha commits himself to a grand gesture, which dwarfs Tim’s earlier feat. But will it be enough?

I was looking for Easter-themed stories, which BTW there are not enough of them, and came across this mpreg by Colbie Dunbar and I immediately 1-clicked. This is a cute meet story which can always bring an extra layer of frun, even if it doesn't seem so cute at the moment, you just know the couple will be telling this story for years to come with all kinds of snark and cuddles. Mpreg is still relatively new to me in regards to the number of authors I've read so even though my library shelf is seemingly small, Colbie Dunbar has certainly earned their place there.

Could it have been better had there been more pages to dive into the mens' story? Sure but in truth, for an Easter holiday story, its the perfect length.  Owen and Tim have a very snark and cuddle connection that may have been based on some miscommunication during their first meet as some moments afterwards as well. Miscommunication can sometimes be used as nothing more than a cheap plot ploy with little to no true understanding behind it but that is not the case with Tim and Owen.

The Omegas Sun-Drenched Easter is a delightful springy holiday short that you can't help but smile at and leave with a lighter heart. Just fun all around.

And Then They Were Three by Nell Iris
Summary:

Willow Street #1.5
Hannes and Mattis have been happily married and heartbound for two years when a tiny, one-eared rabbit shifter kit hops into their lives and seems reluctant to leave ...

This free story is a short glimpse into Hannes and bunny shifter Mattis' happily ever after.

Original Review April 2023:
How in the world it took me over 2 years to discover this free gem existed is beyond me because I absolutely adored the original 9 Willow Street.  Well, find it I finally did and so glad too.

And Then They Were Three is a short(very short some might even go as far to call it a long coda), sweet, and dare I say sexy entertaining read.  I mention "dare I say sexy" because it's not overt but you can feel the chemistry between Hannes and Mattis jump off the page.  Perhaps "sensual" is more appropriate but whatever word you choose, their passion for each other is undeniable.

You really do need to read 9 Willow Street first to fully appreciate this short. You won't be lost and certainly won't not enjoy this cute little looksee into Hannes and Mattis' life but your heart-filled connection to the men won't quite be the same in my opinion.

Such a delight that I may just find myself re-visiting this short every Easter.

Ears, Eggs, and Bunnies by Mary Calmes
Summary:

A Sam and Jory Easter Ficlet.

Ears, Eggs, and Bunnies #6.5
Re-Read Review 2021:
I'm not going to say too much because as a short story and the middle of a series that follows an established couple, I don't want to give anything away.  I will say that as much as I love Jory and Sam in the beginning of their journey when they become a family they reach a whole new level of awesomeness and this Easter short is a perfect example of what makes their family awesome.  Jory is his usual trouble-magnet-self, Sam is all kinds of OMG-Alpha-ness that makes him so loveable and why they make the perfect pair.  As for little Hannah and Kola?  Well they are their own souls but in Ears, Eggs, and Bunnies we see the great blending of their individual spirits and their fathers' children.  If I went beyond the phrase "the bunny's crying" you probably wouldn't believe it but trust me, this is just the best short story I think I've ever read and knowing it's Jory and Sam well that's just icing on the cake, or the chocolate bunny in the Easter basketπŸ˜‰.

Overall Series 5th Re-Read 2019:
Again there's really nothing new I can add that would express how much I love Jory and Sam.  Not everyone likes the kind of alpha male that Sam Kage is and I too don't always appreciate that element but when the dynamic between the two men is so powerful as Sam and Jory then I completely fall in love.  Just because Sam is so alpha don't think Jory is a pushover, oh no he definitely has no problem voicing his opinion either and I think that is what makes them work for me because its an even balance of push and pull from both.

Now as for the audios, there are four different narrators, three for Jory/Sam and one for Duncan/Aaron in Parting Shot.  Some might find that off-putting but I actually found it fitting.  Just why there is different narrators I don't know but as a listener, I found each one did a brilliant job and yes they are noticeably different but they bring the perfect nuances for where the characters are in their journey, we all change as life goes and Paul Morey, Jeff Gelder, and Finn Sterling showcase that wonderfully.  Tristan James brings Duncan and Aaron's story to life that is a perfect fit for the Matter of Time series.

Hop On by Kiki Burrelli
Summary:
Welcome to Morningwood #5
An overweight omega puts his life in the hands of a battered and bruised alpha...

Captain Aries did not escape his last mission unscathed. His work with the Elite Force is always dangerous—it’s not easy protecting an entire town of trusting shifters from outside threats—but Aries blames himself for the danger he put his team in. To make certain that will never happen again, he decides to resign after one last mission: to protect a VIP named Arthur on his way to Morningwood. Aries failed as a Captain, he won’t fail as a bodyguard.

Arthur has lived his life alone and on the run. Hiding from his sadistic twin, Arthur keeps a low profile. Overweight and afraid, he cloaks himself in clothes and never engages with shifters, despite being one himself. His evil brother taught him that shifters only bring danger. But when a ruggedly handsome Captain from Morningwood shows up at his house to escort him to the shifter community, for the first time, Arthur wants to believe he could be safe. Arthur isn’t just concerned with himself though. He has his adopted daughter, Harlow, to care for. At two, she should be years away from her first shift, which makes her ability to spontaneously turn into a tiny bunny strange. Not to mention the troubles it causes around bath time.

Aries is drawn to Arthur from the first moment, but who would want a battered alpha like him? He has no right to put a claim on Arthur. Aries knows the single father is perfect just the way he is and deserves perfection in return. But when a rival alpha approaches Arthur and offers him the safe life he craves, will Aries stand back and watch his future family be whisked away?

Hop On: Welcome to Morningwood Book Five is a full-length omegaverse romance with equal parts heart, angst, humor, and steam. It can be read as a standalone or in order and has a definite, you don’t gotta worry ‘bout it HEA.

Original Review March 2024:
At first I had a bit of a difficulty getting into this story which I fully blame on my brain not wanting to let go of the characters from Sack of Gold.  It only took a chapter, maybe a few pages less than to fully be absorbed in Hop On.  As I said in my Sack review recently, I am unfamiliar with this series as a whole and though I found it bit darker than other omegaverse and mpregs from other authors, I couldn't speak to Burrelli's Welcome to Morningwood.  Well, I think there are definitely some more disturbing if not full-on dark elements in Hop, I won't spoil them but just know that my heart hurt, physically hurt, for Arthur and his little girl, Harlow.  How he found the strength to face it as he did, I'm not sure but he did but I don't think Arthur sees himself in full survivor mode which only added to the hurt my heart felt.

As for Aries, well the name is more menacing than the man but don't count this injured Elite Force Captain out, he may be recovering from the mission that took Arthur's evil brother down but he's not as helpless or unlucky to those around him as he thinks he is.  Hop On is only my second read in Morningwood series but I can't think of a better bodyguard to bring Arthur back to recover his brother's belongings and ID him through said belongings.  At first glance they couldn't be more opposite but truth is as we get to know them better they aren't so different in their hopes and fears.

And I can't forget little Harlow.  What a sweetie with such a heartbreaking past but in Arthur she has found a sense of family and love. She has seen too much in her young years but you know that with Arthur and perhaps Aries(I won't spoil anything) she'll never go unloved.

As I stated in the beginning, Hop On definitely has dark and sad elements but they are all prior to the start of the story but they have left a lasting impression so not only do we see the heartache through Arthur's inner thoughts but also the stranglehold they have left on his present.  There is plenty of goodness in this story too, the darkness does not win, does not overshadow, but the author shows how it takes time to overcome those demons. Heartbreaking but also very heartwarming story that lifts you up.  Definitely the perfect second read to continue my want to discover more from this author.

Original Review October 2025:
This year has been super difficult for me to get into books, even series that I love. This has been one of those series but it's the loss of my mother and my dad's worsening health that has put roadblocks in my reading journey not the books themselves.  I wanted to read at least a few new to me stories for my October showcase on paranormal/supernatural/fantasy tales so I chose Fool's Kisses in Lacey Daize's Mountain Springs Omegas series for one of those new reads.  So glad I chose that one, it was exactly what I needed, a fun, fake boyfriends, friends to lovers romance and the mpreg, IMO fits my search for "out there" tales, not in a scary way but just as it is with my viewing choices, "out there" doesn't always have to be about the fear factor.

Fool's Kisses is the 7th Mountain Springs Omegas entry I've read and though I may not read the remaining 5 right now, I look forward to each one more with each new read I do experience. Daniel and Trent are so delightfully fun,  both have loved each other in secret for awhile, afraid to let the other know and ruin the friendship they both treasure.  When a family wedding presents the opportunity for the men to cross that line, even if it's in a fake form, they may finally find the happiness they both have dreamed of all this time.  As these stories are all about the HEA, I think it's pretty obvious where the outcome will lead but the journey getting there is where the fun is and I won't spoil that.

If you've been reading Mountain Springs Omegas, you have an idea of what to expect and will love this story, if you're new to the series, well you'll love it too and if you are new to the mpreg genre, this series is where I dipped my toe in the water and loved it.  Generally, I am a read-in-order kind of gal but as I occasionally need stories for "lesser featured holidays" for my blog, this is one of those series that allowed me to do that.  Each entry is a new pairing, there are the occasional side characters who pop up that were featured stars of previous entries. Reading in order might help you connect to those characters but you don't need to know their journeys to enjoy each new entry.

The Omega's Sun-Drenched Easter by Colbie Dunbar
Tim
“Hey!”

“What the hell?” Tim swung around and studied a pair of deep set blue eyes. He was struck by the guy’s rapid breathing, open mouth and the hand clamped on his shoulder. The omega winced as the stranger’s fingers dug into his flesh. But it was the primitive scent reminding Tim of his four-legged ancestors that had him taking a step back.

“I’ve got you, sir.”

Moments earlier, the omega had been leaning against the railing, the wind ruffling his hair and biting his cheeks as he squinted at the ocean stretching out to the horizon. Water sprayed on his face and after wrapping one hand around the railing, he’d got on tiptoes, and leaned out as far as he could.

Churning through the sea, the ship had left a white frothy trail in its wake. Tim had been peering at the turbulent water, hoping to see dolphins. He’d read the mammals loved to cruise through the ocean behind boats, and with a hand shading his face against the sun, he’d been staring at the backwash along with groups of fellow passengers.

Now, a guy with the beginnings of a five o’clock shadow, sunglasses perched on the end of his nose and dressed in the cruise ship’s uniform of light blue, short-sleeved shirt and white pants had spoiled the moment. Despite the ocean’s salty aroma and the wind whipping past his face, Tim shivered as he inhaled the man’s powerful fragrance. Alpha! The odor filled his nostrils, and a pleasurable tingling sensation spread over his body.

The omega peered at a tag on the alpha’s chest and made out the name ‘Owen’ as the alpha gripped his shirt and wouldn’t let go. Tim inspected Owen’s short fingernails before his eyes skimmed along the alpha’s muscular arm and then back to the face that trapped him in its gaze. “Get away from me!” He grabbed Owen’s hand and tried to pry it off.

“Whatever’s going on, help is available.”

“I don’t need help. Especially not from you.” Tim glanced over his shoulder at the water. “You’ve ruined everything.”

“We’ve got people who will listen to you.”

“Listen to this! You fucked up and I’m pissed.”

Two burly security guards raced up to the pair and stood on either side of the omega. One placed a hand on his shoulder. “Come with us, sir.”

“What is this?”

“We can talk about it, but you need to come below.”

A shout from someone further along the deck had Tim growl, “Is it against policy to have fun?”

The alpha glanced at a group to his right and Tim took advantage of his distraction. He grabbed Owen’s thumb and twisted it back. The alpha yelped as the omega ducked and stumbled backwards.

Both security guards charged forward shoving Owen onto Tim. The omega’s back was bent over the railing and his inverted view of the world had him puzzling over which way was up. Two pairs of beefy hands grabbed him and hauled him upright while the alpha groaned and shook his thumb which was already swelling.

With Owen’s lips a hair’s breadth from Tim’s, the omega screwed up his face as the alpha’s tangy scent suffocated him. Owen’s groin was pressed against Tim’s, and the omega struggled to free himself, not only from the warmth of the man’s body, but also the aroma that battered his senses.

And Then There Were Three by Nell Iris
A twitch of the little rabbit's body catches my attention.

At first, Vidar ran and hid underneath a bush whenever either of us spoke to him, as though he expected to be chastised, or maybe worse. But gradually he's gotten used to us, and maybe learned to trust us a little, so these days we can talk to him without scaring him.

But I still gentle my voice and try to make myself smaller when I turn to him. "Hey there, kiddo. You know he's not actually mad at you, right?" I point my thumb at Mattis, give Vidar a warm smile, and waggle my eyebrows. When Vidar's nose twitches and his ear rises from his body the tiniest bit, my heart leaps in my chest. "He may be big and sound strict, but he's just a big ole softie who wants to show you the tastiest carrots."

Mattis pinches my butt hard, but out of the corner of my eye, I can see his encouraging smile.

Vidar's body relaxes a little.

"I would tell him to turn into a rabbit and show you where to find the best carrots, but he'd probably eat them all, and we don't want that, do we?"

The kit's chin raises a little until it's no longer plastered to the ground.

"But do you want to know a secret?" I loud-whisper.

The little nose stops, as though Vidar holds his breath, waiting for what I'm about to say.

"We grow enough carrots for both of you."

Vidar's ear springs up to full attention.

"Look over there." I lean forward and point to a random carrot. "That one's the best. I promise. Go on. Dig it up."

We both tense with anticipation as Vidar hops once and then pauses, eyes on me, waiting to see if I'm going to change my mind. When I don't, he sets off toward the vegetable I pointed out, hopping faster than I've ever seen him do before, and starts digging with abandon. Now and then he stops and looks in my direction, but when I nod and smile, he continues.

Mattis sighs. "And you call me a softie. You hardly let me touch your beloved carrots, and I'm your husband."

"What can I say, honey? I have a thing for cute, one-eared kits."

Ears, Eggs, and Bunnies by Mary Calmes
Technically it was my daughter’s fault and not mine, but I seriously doubted that the love of my life, US Supervisory Marshal Sam Kage, would see it that way. But really, it was. Hannah Banana––B for short––had wanted bunny ears for Easter. I looked everywhere without success because by the time she decided she wanted them, and the kind she wanted, everywhere close to us was sold out. So, because I’m a sucker for my sweet kid, I took the afternoon off to call around and find ears.

Since it was Good Friday and the kids were already with me at the office, once I found a place that said, “Sure, we have some,” I put both my daughter and son in the minivan, and we drove out to Northbrook. It wasn’t far, at one in the afternoon only 45 minutes, and we easily found the place that sold costumes and a ton of other stuff, as it turned out to be this enormous warehouse called Masquerade Emporium. It was huge, the kind of superstore that probably did a bustling business at Halloween but otherwise, people just trickled into.

They had more costumes than I’d seen in years, and so I assumed that there had to be bunny ears in the place somewhere. It wasn’t the cleanest establishment I’d ever been in, and smelled a bit like mothballs. Kola, who had just learned about germs in fifth grade science, wanted a hazmat suit and a ventilator.

“Pa, it’s not clean in here,” he informed me, clearly revolted.

“Oooh, do you think they have a sonic screwdriver?” Hannah happily asked. She was the only one in her class that had a Doctor Who lunchbox and thermos. She wasn’t watching the kind of TV the other second graders did. She could not converse about Hello Kitty or My Little Pony, but ask her to draw you the Tardis, and she was right on top of that.

“I don’t think so, B,” I yawned, walking down the aisle that the texting clerk had directed me to.

“Pa, we’re going to go down the aisle with the werewolf masks,” Kola said as he followed his little sister, informing me of their destination. It was funny how much like Sam he was, cautious and deliberate. Hannah was more like me, all about leaping and then looking to see if there was a net there.

“Wait.”

Both of my children stopped to look at me.

“We should all go together.”

Kola sighed heavily, as though I were simply too tedious for words. “I’m nine now, and Hannah’s seven,” he explained gravely, as though I were not aware of these facts. “We’re not going to run away or be stupid enough to go off with a stranger.”

“Yeah, but––”

“And we’re together, Pa. You don’t have to be right next to us anymore, as long as we’re in the same general vicinity.”

Vicinity. Who taught him these words? “I just worry.”

Hannah gave me her most patronizing smile.

“We know,” he said, nodding sagely. “But Dad said that we need to start being more independent. It’s why he’s teaching us how to survive in the wild.”

Which had nothing to do with anything but Sam wanting to take his kids––and me––camping. Fishing, making a fire, those things were fun for the marshal. I had drawn the line at hunting, and with Hannah becoming a vegetarian, Sam wasn’t going to convince her to shoot Bambi either. Kola wanted to learn to shoot, but not at animals. He wanted to go target shooting because when the zombie apocalypse hit, he wanted to be ready.

“Pa?”

They were waiting on me as my mind drifted. “Fine, but not too far.”

Kola rolled his eyes.

Hop On by Kiki Burrelli
Chapter One
Aries (Captain)
"Fuck, shit, dammit!" I clenched my hands into fists to keep from slamming them against the dashboard. This was a rental, and I didn't think the Elite Force would want to foot the bill for my aggressive outburst. Then again, they wouldn't be getting many more bills from me. Not if this went like I wanted it to.

I sucked in the cool early morning air, taking a moment to breathe through the rage like my appointed therapist had instructed me to do. My jaw ached from the pressure and movement. It felt so tight I wouldn't be surprised if soon it simply snapped in two, right off its hinges, leaving me with a floppy horror movie mouth.

But at least the breathing distracted me from my non-functioning leg. For half a second. I yanked the keys out of the ignition to stop the relentless dinging and grabbed onto the door ledge. Pulling my left half, I negotiated my injured leg out of the car. It had been a long drive from Morningwood to Monterey, and I'd chose to drive straight through, rather than take breaks like my doctor suggested.

I was so close to being rid of Golden Bone, though—and my current life—the idea of stopping, delaying that for even a moment, felt unacceptable. My days with the Elite Force were numbered, and once I transferred Golden Bone's remains to the right person and out of my life, all the other parts of me that had refused to heal would start to do so. They had to.

All I had was this one last task. Captain Stellers was too smart a shifter to take over my team without first making sure the most notorious hitman to ever enter Morningwood was completely taken care of. Golden Bone. The golden retriever shifter hitman who moonlighted as a serial killer was cursing me even in death.

He'd met his end, brutally, but not before leaving a wake of destruction behind him. I was still alive. I was one of the lucky ones. But I wanted my life from before, the one where I could walk and move freely, without pain. The life where I didn't need to see the bottom of a bottle of whiskey to fall asleep and where my muscles didn't twitch at the slightest sound or movement.

Which was why I found myself parking on the side of a quiet street with large, fenced-in homes. Stately oak trees lined the sidewalk, their branches breaking up the bright blue sky that stretched overhead, decorated with large, puffy white cloud formations. This was a road where nothing bad happened. I almost couldn't believe anyone related to Golden Bone could live here. Finding a next of kin had been nearly impossible. Everyone at the station told me to just forget it, to let the hitman's remains rot in the holding storage. But even knowing his ashes were in the same city as me would not do. That, and Stellers wouldn't take over otherwise. He was a dot your i's, cross your t's kind of guy.

I hadn't told my team I was leaving. They'd put on airs, pretend to be surprised or disappointed, but we'd all been waiting for this day. Ever since Golden Bone snapped my leg in two and made me a fool in front of my team.

I shut the car door and stepped onto the sidewalk, wincing. Just a few more steps became my personal mantra. The leg wouldn't stop hurting—nothing could make it do that—but it would loosen up. My body would remember after the long drive in one position how to compensate with my other limbs.

Most people would still be bedridden after the injury I'd sustained. A double compound fracture with torn ligaments and tendons on both ends. That was fancy talk for Golden Bone stepped on my leg hard. The bones stuck through my skin, and then he shook them like a dog with a bone. Except—jokes all around—as a golden retriever shifter, he had literally been a dog with a bone.

The break had been bad enough. The torn ligaments on both sides were worse. Even my enhanced shifter healing was having a hard time bringing me back to one hundred percent. I was beginning to think I simply didn't go that high anymore.

"Harlow!" an urgent whisper came from ahead. "Harlow, get back here. No! Don't you—!"

I checked the street address, noting the whispers were coming from behind the fence of the home I was walking toward.

Fear, as jagged as broken glass, lodged into the top of my throat. Was this Golden Bone's next of kin? What sort of person would I find? They were a paranoid sort, proof from the fact that they refused to come to Morningwood alone and would not even entertain the idea of signing for the ashes unless I could personally ensure their safe travel.

If there had been any way to mail the remains, I would have. But the mayor had been adamant that we do things by the books—despite the fact that nothing had been done that way before this point—which meant this person was required to come to Morningwood and personally sign the documents that would transfer ownership.

"If you don't get over here right now, that's it, Harlow. No cookies for lunch. No Peppa!" the voice threatened.

I couldn't be sure, but I thought the person was either a man trying to sound quiet while being loud or a woman who had smoked most of her life. At the thought of smoking, I patted my shirt pocket, relieved by the small cardboard lump I found there.

Quitting the first time had been difficult, but after the attack, those deathsticks were the only thing that kept me sane when the sun was out.

I'd made it to the front gate. The fence was double layered with staggered wrought iron poles that made it very difficult to see inside unless a person stood at the exact right angle. I tried to look in before pressing the intercom button, but all I saw was a bundle of movement. Someone wearing a puffy jacket in the middle of an expansive yard.

On the other side of the fence came a trilling noise. I pressed the intercom again. The noise happened a second time.

"That's—oh no," the voice said. "Harlow! Harlow!" The person on the other side had reached panicked levels.

The Elite Force agent inside of me urged me to remain calm so that the person on the other side would be calm. I guessed I should be impressed that someone could still sound more panicked than I felt. That had to be why I wanted to soothe them. I knew what it was like to feel like you were stuffed into skin too tight that was slowly shrinking even smaller.

"Excuse me," I called out loudly. "I'm on the other side of the fence and can hear you." There was no answer so I kept speaking. "I'm the one you've been corresponding with." Still no answer. "Regarding the remains?" Bile rose up my throat, and I swallowed it down. The taste still lingered, sharp and acidic.

"Yo-you're with the Elite Force?" the voice asked timidly.

"I'd like to discuss that inside if I may." No one who lived on this street was supposed to know the Elite Force existed. Our duty was to keep the unique all-shifter town of Morningwood safe and, most importantly, a secret from non-shifters—normal humans—or as we called them, normies. Golden Bone had landed on the Elite Force's radar by using his shifter abilities to kill people for money. It had been only a matter of time before he would've been caught by the normie FBI and then who knew what secrets he would've told.

He wouldn't be talking now. Or hurting anyone else.

"Are you alone?" the person asked.

"Yes, as you requested." I'd nearly canceled the whole trip when the next of kin had asked that I come by myself. It had felt unnecessarily dangerous, but up until that point in our communication, my contact had simply seemed frightened, but earnest. Now they were standing on the other side of the gate, and I was even more curious about what type of a person this was. A type with a pet—I could assume that much already.

"Do you see the lens on the gate? It's nestled inside the zero in the address plate."

I peered more closely at the gate. Sure enough, inside the zero there was a small camera lens. "I see it."

"Stand exactly four feet back with your body directly in front of the camera. Arms stretched out to your side."

I did as he asked, hoping the additional strain on my leg that standing in that position gave me didn't show on my face. I waited that way for five seconds. Another five, and my left leg began to shake—a precursor to giving out entirely—and then—

"Stand back. The door swings out."

I didn't need to shuffle back, but I did. The door opened, revealing a wide, deep green lawn. Behind the lawn was a sprawling garden with bushes that lined the walk way and so many different kinds of plants I was momentarily awed. A garden this size and vibrancy must've taken a lot of work, dedication, and talent. It managed even to outshine the stately mansion behind it.

Standing to the side, looking utterly out of place with his multiple layers of dark clothing, black cap, and sunglasses stood a man. I could only assume he was my contact. Juxtaposed against the vibrant background, his unassuming presence only piqued my curiosity further.

"Are you Golden Bone's next of kin?" I asked quietly once the gate had closed behind me.

"Golden Bone," the man spat. "That's a dumb name." He spoke with so much hatred, so much vitriol, I didn't think he could be talking to me. "He probably loved it," the man said.

"And you are…?" I prompted, stepping closer. My contact had given me very limited information.

For every step I hobbled closer, he slunk back like a cat toward a mouse. "My name is Arthur. You already know I'm related to the d-deceased so I don't see why I need to give you any more information."

True. The task of finding someone related to Golden Bone had been difficult. From what we knew of him, he came from an affluent shifter family that did not grow up in any of the more common shifter towns. No place was quite as secure as Morningwood, but Dix Wallow was another popular shifter town, as well as a few others.

Golden Bone had never wanted for money—hadn't even needed the fees he'd collected while working as a hitman. While that fact had narrowed the list, it hadn't pointed toward any place or family in particular. After a while, I'd focused only on the rich families that weren't answering my calls.

Eventually, I'd crossed every name off my list except for an old number for a home in Connecticut. I'd spoken to an elderly woman who had given me a forwarding address which had led to another vacant house with another number to call that turned up an old email address, and the rest was history. And honestly, even if Arthur wasn't Golden Bone's next of kin, if he could just pretend long enough to take the ashes away, I'd be fine. I'd done my job and could wash my hands clean of the situation. Finally.

"My name is Captain Aries Canis. I am—"

"Your actual name is Captain?" Arthur asked.

"No. I am a Captain. I command a team. I'm in the Elite Force. We protect our town from outsiders. It's all very important work…" Why couldn't I shut up? And I wasn't going to be a captain for much longer anyway. "You know what, forget the captain part, just call me Aries."

"Hmm, Aries," Arthur repeated. He brought his hand up to the top button of his shirt. I spotted at least two other layers beneath that one. He worried at the button. "God of war or astrological?" he asked, and something about his tone made me wish I could see his eyes more clearly.

"Astrological," I replied.

"Hm," Arthur replied.

That single noncommittal noise filled me with so many questions. Who was this man, really? What was his connection to Golden Bone? Even with the glasses on and a pale beard covering some of his face, I could make out his tense, fearful expression. He wore clothes like they were a suit of armor, as if he could put on enough dark layers to protect himself. But from what? I let my eyes travel over his body. There wasn't much I could make out, not through the jacket, button up and undershirts. He was an average height, but stockier than most shifters, and I would've wagered that a luscious ass lurked beneath those slacks.

I cleared my throat. I'll take inappropriate musings for a thousand.

"Were you looking for something?" I asked. "When I walked up?"

"Oh! Shi-oot!" He spun from me, inching toward a large oak tree in the corner of his yard. It was so large, I'd seen the branches hanging over the fence from the other side. "Harlow!" he shouted, running to the trunk and looking up into the branches above. "Stay there. Don't move. I'll get the ladder, and…"

I walked up behind him, peering up as well. There, nestled among the branches, was a tiny bunny with fur made of every shade of brown. Its miniscule ears stuck straight up on either side of its head. The animal couldn't have been very old at all and looked down at us with black, unblinking eyes.

"Your pet?" I asked.

Arthur gave me a double take, and I couldn't tell if he was more shocked by my sudden presence beside him or the bunny stuck in the tree.

"I've heard that they aren't great climbers but can climb. He should make his way back down."

"She's a she," Arthur replied. What I could see of his face had lost a considerable amount of color.

If this was freaking him out so much, I didn't see why I should let it continue. I reached for the tree. The bunny squeaked as Arthur snagged my arm. His fingers felt hot and pressed firmly into my skin.

"What are you doing?"

"Going to get your pet. You want her right?"

He pulled me back, letting me know that while his voice and mannerisms seemed timid, he was strong. "I'll do it," he said uncertainly. "She'll just hide from you."

I stepped back. I wasn't going to fight this, I'd just wanted to help Arthur relax a little, and he'd seemed unable to do that with his pet in the tree.

He took a deep breath and started to climb. I could see immediately that, like bunnies, he also wasn't much of a climber. He reached for a branch, and when I saw he meant for it to hold his weight, I stepped forward, opening my mouth in warning.

The branch snapped before I got a sound out. Arthur fell back. I caught him but wasn't prepared for the sudden change in weight, and my left leg gave out from under me, causing us both to tumble to the ground. Thankfully, I was able to turn my upper half to absorb the bulk of the force, but Arthur scrambled like I had my arms around him to kidnap him. He ripped his body from my embrace so quickly it knocked his sunglasses of his face.

At least now I'd be able to see—

The same eyes that had been haunting me for weeks.

"Golden Bone," I hissed, my hand going to my waist. I didn't know if I was reaching for a weapon or my radio, but neither was attached to my belt. One blink later and I was back to that night from my nightmares, frozen cold, hunched over Malcolm Amari's dining room table, paralyzed from the drug Golden Bone had slipped us. "You—you're dead." I still sounded like a tire quickly losing air.

Arthur pulled his hat off, revealing a head of golden locks, the exact shade of Golden Bone's but not near as long. "I'm not him. Though I can tell by your reaction he's hurt you too. His name isn't Golden Bone either. It's Artemis. He was my brother. My twin brother."

"Twin?" I echoed.

Arthur's face twisted into a scowl. "Give or take a hundred pounds." He gave a short, humorless laugh.

All that told me was that Arthur had seen Golden Bone before his demise. And not many people alive could say that. "Did you know about what he was doing?" I asked sharply. Even if he didn't take part, knowledge of his brother's crimes should put him in prison for a long time.

"Of course I did," he snapped, but he sounded more tired than angry. "I always found out, after. Always after. Do you think I would've let him get away with anything if I'd known before?"

I was going to reply that I didn't know him so I didn't know what he was capable of when I noticed a brown shape soaring through the air.

Arthur also noticed a split second after me. He shouted, "Harlow!" and reached for the runaway bunny.

Using my good leg, I hopped up, managing to pluck the tiny creature from it's trajectory before it slammed into the ground.

Arthur shouted again, like I'd done the wrong thing.

I turned to tell him I was just worried about the thing breaking its leg when I felt it move and wriggle in my hands. I looked down, watching the bunny morph from a furry baby animal to a child that couldn't be older than two. She continued to shift, back and forth from bunny to child. I recognized the response. It wasn't all that uncommon in shifters during periods of heightened stress. Particularly immature or juvenile shifters. What was odd, however, was that this shifter was nowhere near puberty, which was the generally accepted age when shifters were first able to transform into their animal counterparts. Some were able to a little earlier, but earlier by months, not by eight years.

Arthur snatched the child from me, cradling her to his chest. She relaxed immediately. Her shifts grew less frequent until she gave a tiny sigh and settled into her human form.

I stared at the odd pair. One the twin brother of a devious hitman and the other a child with abilities that shouldn't be possible. "What the hell is going on here?"

Fool's Kisses by Lacey Daize
Chapter 1 - Daniel
“They must let only the sweetest omegas work in candy stores, am I right?” the alpha leered at me, leaning over the counter and slightly into my space.

I put on what I hoped was more a customer service smile than an actual grimace. “I wouldn’t know.”

He walked his fingers across the counter, close enough to my hand to make me want to slap it away, but not touching. “How about you tell me what time you get off work, and we can find out.”

I glanced at the total on the register. “That’ll be twelve seventy-seven please.”

He blinked. “What?”

“Your total: twelve seventy-seven.”

His demeanor changed instantly as he stood and reached for his wallet. “Tch.”

I accepted thirteen dollars, and grabbed the change. “Twenty-three cents is your change, sir.” I then passed him the bag of chocolates. “Please come again soon.”

He snarled and snatched the bag before turning and almost stomping from the shop with a muttered, “Bitch.”

I waited until the door closed behind him before releasing a sigh of relief.

Mount Chocolate had been featured in some online news article listing the best omega-led candy stores in each state. Since its publication we’d seen an increase in business, both good and bad.

Mason loved seeing all the families with children drive out to taste his creations, and had even developed some new treats. Luckily, that was the majority of the clientele increase.

Then there were the other new customers: rude alphas who thought that omega-led meant open to flirting. Most of them said things that sounded like compliments on the surface, but were actually horribly condescending. Phrases such as ‘It’s a good job for a bunch of omegas’ and ‘It’s amazing what omegas can do nowadays,’ were some that I never wanted to hear again.

“You ok?”

I turned to see Mason standing in the arch between the front and the kitchen. I sighed. “Just another alpha who thinks that I owed him my number because he bought some chocolate.”

Mason frowned. “Sorry man.”

I shook my head. “Not your fault. You didn’t know that damned article was coming out.”

“No. But it’s been hardest on you, since Andrew and I tend to be in the back making the chocolates.”

I pulled off my gloves and tossed them in the garbage. “I just wish the damn alphas would leave their damn dicks at the door. Maybe then they could act like civilized people.”

Mason chuckled. “Want me to hire an alpha to be on the counter so that you have more backup? The sales are up enough to justify it.”

I shook my head. “Thanks, I got it. It’ll probably start to die down in a few more weeks.”

“I could get you some fake bonding bite temp tattoos,” Mason teased.

I rolled my eyes. “And scare off the alphas I might actually be interested in?”

Mason frowned. “Last I checked you weren’t even looking, and I don’t remember the last time you talked about hitting up the bars.”

I scowled at him. “So?”

Mason held up his hands. “Hey man, I’m not one to talk, you know how long I was single. Sorry for being insensitive.”

I sighed. “No. I shouldn’t have snapped. I think I’m just sick of pushy alphas thinking that this is a hookup spot rather than a place of business.”

Mason smiled. “I’ve got some deliveries ready to go. How about you take them and I’ll man the counter.”

“You sure?” I asked, withholding my sigh of relief.

“Yeah. The alphaholes get snippy about bonding marks, but it’s usually enough to get them to lay off. Even if they could find a willing omega, which is hard enough already, it can’t go any further than a quick fuck.”

I managed a small smile. “A delivery run sounds perfect then. At least our regulars don’t try to get into my pants.”

“I’ll get you the list.”

“Thanks man.”

“No sweat. Just let me know if they’re too much, ok? Andrew or I can switch out, or I can still hire an alpha temp.”

“I think I’m just moody. My heat’s in a couple weeks, and you know how hard they are on me.”

Mason nodded. “Yeah, I know. Go on, before another alphahole comes in.”

“Don’t have to tell me twice.”

Mason laughed. “Get.”

He tossed me the keys to the work van, which he’d been able to buy after the number of deliveries ramped up following the article. He then yelled into the back. “Hey Andrew, Daniel’s taking the delivery. Help take it out will ya?”

“You got it boss!” Andrew yelled from the back.

I was nearly past Mason when he stopped me. “You’ve already got some time scheduled for that wedding, and you have more coming. Why not tack a few more days off onto it and relax some? It’ll be tight around here, but most of the Easter prep is done. Andrew and I can keep up with the front and making enough chocolate to maintain the stock.”

I was about to refuse, but realized it might not be such a bad idea. Maybe a few days away could help me clear my head.

“You know?” I replied. “I’ll think about it.”

Mason smiled. “Do. I’d rather have you out a few extra days than have you stressed and burnt out.”

“Lord knows I’ll be stressed after several days with my extended family.”

Mason laughed. “You want family stress? Remind me to tell you about my mother-in-law.”

“Fuck no!” I laughed. “That bitch is crazy.”

Mason grinned at me. “Go on, and think about taking an extra few days.”

“I will.”

“Good.”

Andrew had almost finished loading up the van by the time I got outside. I gave him a wave, climbed in and started the engine.

I pulled onto the main road and headed toward one of the small office buildings. But my thoughts were only marginally on driving.

Instead my mind drifted to the upcoming wedding, which Mason had unfortunately reminded me of. At twenty-nine I was the oldest of the cousins still without a mate, and my busybody relatives were always trying to set me up.

A few days to wind down from their constant nagging wouldn’t be the worst idea.

Heck, it wouldn’t be so bad if they could even present somewhat palatable choices. But they thought I needed a big strong, overbearing, alphahole in my life.

No thank you.

Besides… my heart belonged to only one alpha. He just didn’t know it.

As for me? I dictate my steamy stories with a glass of champagne in one hand. Because why not?
