Few Are Angels #1
The snow was deep, and the air so cold that he felt the wind’s sharp teeth pierce his skin. In the distance, someone was burning wood. The scent was strong and familiar. It reminded him of his home so long ago with Illiana and Agnes. He couldn't afford to be disrupted by their memory. At one point, his actions had been for their survival. The need for bloodshed and vengeance once weighed heavy on his mind. He hadn’t intended to become the monster they’d claimed him to be, but now he prided himself on the names they called him. His personal favorite was the Dark Prince. He was not royalty, but his name would never be forgotten, nor could he forget the reason he’d become the man he was today.  His men, through his connection to the Arc, had traced her to a state on the east coast. Their bond had grown stronger because of her visions, which had become longer and fiercer. It pleased and excited him to know how close they were to finding her exact location. It wouldn’t be much longer.

The Council was close on his heels. He and his men had reduced their numbers, but they remained quite bothersome. He never understood why their leader would not create more Immortals, as he had done. His brand of Immortals was vastly different than himself and the Council. He’d found a great use in half-breed vampires, or Chorý, even though they were not as powerful as a pure blood. They were still physically challenging to the younger Eternals. Ancient Eternals such as himself and the leader of the Council could crush a half-breed without breaking a sweat. Because they were not accepted by their own kind and unable to inform humans of their existence, half-breeds were very easy to control, especially when rewarded with acceptance.

The Dark Prince returned to his room and closed the balcony door. Darke, the first in command in his arsenal of Chorý, waited for him in the office. The Dark Prince removed his coat and placed it gently on the chair in front of Darke. He wouldn’t invite the man to sit. He wouldn’t provide even that small comfort until his job was completed.

“News?” he demanded.

Darke bowed his head and placed his arms at his sides. “Sir, we have tracked her to a city called Virginia Beach, but she is no longer there. We searched her home, and though it’s still furnished, it looks abandoned. It’s because of her parents’ demise that we believe her connection to you had begun.”

The Dark Prince already knew the cause of the initial connection, and he would use that to his advantage once he found her, but curiosity didn't allow him to remain silent.  “What has become of the girl?”

“She was sent to a facility for the mentally insane, sir.”

“What?” the Dark Prince bellowed.  Surprised at his own outburst, he calmed himself and sat.

The Dark Prince had chosen Darke to lead his men because of his fearlessness and vicious battle tactics. Darke’s discomfort didn't go unrecognized by Laurent.

Darke shifted his stance and cleared his throat before he continued. “Sir, if I may? This could be good for you. She may feel alone at a time such as this and need only for someone to accept her.”

There were times that the half-vampire was of more use to him than he’d like to admit. The girl would be an outcast amongst her own kind. He would exploit that insecurity as he had done to so many others—it would be perfect.  Illiana had once called him ‘gentle devil’ because of his ability to lead an opponent to their death while pretending to cushion the fall. Suddenly, the air around him was thick with the scent of roses and sandalwood. It was her scent. Each Arc had a unique scent.  The new Arc’s essence was delectable. The aroma of roses was light and innocent while the sandalwood was as strong and fierce as her power.
Eternal Light #3
His eyes darkened and the room grew cold. Jace stood, pacing the length of the kitchen. His whole demeanor changed from comforting friend to stone cold Council member. “You’ll hate me for this in the long run, but I’ll protect you from anything threatening your life. Even if that includes—”

“Kale,” I added. He thought Kale was a danger to me, yet here I was, held by his boss a man who had my parents killed. Yeah, Kale was the danger.

He turned and his appraisingly cool blue eyes met mine. “No, not from Kale. I know he loves you.”

My heart quickened at the truth resonating in his words. “If not from Kale, then who? Your boss and his goons?” I asked.

“No, Ella. I’m going to protect you from you.”

I stared at him. “You think my choice to give fifteen years of my life was wrong.” I ate another piece of cheese and then a grape. Jace shook his head, but I continued, “Everyone thinks I am a victim and maybe at one point I was . . . but let me make this clear. I am weak and helpless no longer.”

Jace smiled. “Aleixandre is not the man he used to be. He has more planned than just keeping you here, especially now that you promised him so many years.”

He had me there, but how else would I have become an immortal? “What’s for dinner?” I asked, hoping to change the subject.

He didn’t take the bait. “No, I want to know what’s going on, Ella.” Jace leaned in, placing a hand on my knee. “I can’t protect you if I’m in the dark.”

I placed my hand over his. “If I do this, Kale and I can be together. That’s my goal, my end game.” I could see in his eyes, my words didn’t break the surface. He didn’t believe me and was concerned.

“Do you know what Aleixandre truly wants from you? Have you even asked?” Jace moved his hand and rubbed his eyes. I could tell he was getting worked up again.

“Seriously, I’m starving.” I rubbed my tummy for a dramatic effect.

“Don’t think this is the end of that conversation.” He huffed, and then gave in. “What do you want for dinner?”

I shrugged. “Food.” Jace laughed quietly and I placed my head on the table. I was starving and I really didn’t care what he cooked as long as it was quick and easy. “Hurry, my stomach is touching my back.” I groaned, placing a hand over my stomach. Grabbing a handful of raspberries, I headed into the kitchen to observe his dinner preparation.

His face wrinkled in confusion. “What does that mean? Stomach touching your back . . .” He glanced at my stomach as if the answer was there.

I ate some of the berries and laughed. “It means my stomach is empty and I need food in it now.” I stood beside Jace and watched as he pulled the ingredients from the cupboards. “What are you making?”

Jace moved past me and to the table with the fruits. “Syrniki.”

“Umm . . . you want to elaborate?” I popped a few more raspberries into my mouth.

He came back to the kitchen after grabbing a bunch of blueberries. “It’s a pan fried cheesecake.”

“A what-fried-what?” I was in the mood for food, like real food with substance. “Jace, we need dinner, you know meat, beans, and potatoes?” I counted off the items with my fingers.

He looked at me like an over-worked mother cooking for her family, before shooing me away.

“Hey!” I huffed. “I can be of some help. You know, speed this process up a bit.” I stuck my bottom lip out and pouted.

“Fine. Go to the fridge and grab the lamb from the bottom shelf.”

“Lamb?” My mouth watered as I followed his directions. In the little fridge was so much food, I wanted to sit in front of it and graze. Instead, I handed him the pan. “What’s on it?”

Jace was mixing flour and water together in the bowl with the berries. “It’s olive oil and rosemary with a bit of salt and pepper.” Damn, it looked and smelled good. “You want to go and freshen up while I do this?”

I washed my hands and turned to Jace, motioning to the bedroom door. “I don’t have any clothes.”

“There is stuff in there I’m sure will fit you.”

I should have known Aleixandre would be prepared. I headed to the bedroom. Opening the door, I looked inside and was momentarily stunned. In the middle of the room sat the same large, four-poster bed where Kale and I made love for the first time in a vision.

I shook out of my shock and entered the room, shutting the door behind me. The smile on my face must have been bigger and brighter than the sun, because part of my vision was true. But what did it mean that our first time was here on the compound under Aleixandre’s nose? A bed like the one in my vision really did exist and that may have been a small truth, but hell, it was mine. The rest, well, I prayed it would come true, and each choice I made would help me get there faster.

I moved to the bed and took in the light pink sheets and fluffy white comforter. Looking up, the window above the bed had a mural of angels around it. My heart fluttered in my chest, leaving me light headed. It confirmed my initial belief. This was definitely where the vision with Kale took place. Only, the window had been open and the warm scent of magnolia perfumed the air.

Running to the window, I leaned over the bed to look out of it. No magnolia trees, only the forest surrounding the new home. “Odd, no white flowers anywhere,” I whispered.

Moving away from the bed, I glanced around. There was a writing desk, closet, bed, and trunk at the foot of the bed. In the closet were shirts, jeans and two pairs of shoes. I grabbed a blue shirt, a pair of jeans and underwear, and then headed to the bathroom.

The hallway was filled with the smell of spiced meat as Jace worked diligently at the stove. In the bathroom, I turned on the hot water and adjusted the temperature to a soothing degree. Disrobing, I looked at myself in the mirror. Nothing was different. I was immortal, but I felt the same. I still hungered for food, lusted for Kale, and feared where the future would take me. There was no grand affair that led me into immortality. Aleixandre solely gave me an elixir that tasted bitter then sweet, and eventually put me to sleep. Jace said I was out longer than anyone he’d ever witnessed during the change.

I stepped into the tub and rested against the back, the warm water gently sloshing against the sides. A knock at the door made me jump and cover my body as much as I could with my hands.

Jace’s voice came from the other side of the door. “Whenever you are ready, you’ll want to come out here.”

I listened as he moved away from the door, then relaxed again, using my foot to turn off the water. I would have loved to sit and soak, but the scents coming through the door called to me and I quickly washed and exited the tub.

Voices from the other room caught my attention and the scent of winter—burning wood and fresh snow— assaulted my senses. I wrapped the towel around my body and walked to the door. The voices weren’t arguing, but whomever Jace was talking to didn’t seem happy. When the scent hit my nose again my brow shot up and my brain screamed one name.

Kale.

After the Fall #3.5
After showering and dressing, I headed out of the door praying that this anniversary would be met with some alone time. I realized as soon as I got to the office that the big guy upstairs wasn’t answering prayers today. The office was in utter chaos and the T.V. blared the news of an attack on a small child in some town I’d never heard of.

Sola’s smooth voice sounded from beside me. “This is what we have spent five years training for.” She motioned to the T.V. news broadcaster who was interviewing some small town hero about how he had saved the child from what he called, “a vampire attack”. Cue an almost indiscernible eye roll from the broadcaster. “And this.” She waved a hand to the office personnel who seemed to be in a hurricane of work and phone calls.

I overheard one say, “This is unacceptable. This story could create utter chaos.”

I smiled. That it had done, but solely here in Sola’s office. I shook my head and ran my fingers through my new haircut. My head felt light as I ruffled the short Spanish style bob.

“Sola, can I talk to you?” Observing the room I added, “Somewhere in which the world has not threatened to come to an end.” An office worker caught my eye. Her panicked expression prompted a quelling stare from Sola. Sola turned to me and sighed. Her husky laugh sounded tired as she led me to her office and closed the door behind us with a soft thud. Glancing at her Cambridge diploma on the wall, and the picture of her and Jace arm in arm in Italy—then the one I took of them in Paris.

Sola came waddling in, her rounded belly nearly large enough to be holding two babies instead of the one little boy Jace had been calling Ben. They’d recently gotten married and with Sola as a new Chorý, they didn’t have to worry about her aging. Plopping down in her seat, she sighed and smiled. “What’s up?”

I lowered my voice, even though she and I were the only people in the room. “Can I ask you something personal?”

She sat back and placed her hands over her belly, rubbing affectionately. “I think I can guess what this is about. Jace and I were actually just talking about it.” I waited for more. “With the baby coming, we decided that one or both of us would have to step down for a bit.”

I already knew this and had met Inés, who would be taking over for Sola until her return. We’d been lucky enough to steal her from the Federales. She’d worked for the Mexican Federal Police, but had graduated to the Mexican Federal Army. She was good at her job, spoke a few languages and took no shit. She was pretty much a Mexican Sola and I think Jace was weirded out by it.

She continued. “We also talked about how you and Kale haven’t been able to stop since we started five years ago.” She eyed me with a contemplative stare.

I held my hands up in defense. “I’m not complaining, but I do feel like this venture has stolen a piece of me. I thought I’d have a honeymoon, a dog, free time, a few days off, and a house I had time to unpack.” I stood and paced, too restless to sit still any longer. “But back then I was this nineteen year old kid with a dream and a husband.” Gently I traced my fingers over the sonogram Sola hung on her wall of baby Ben. I wasn’t ready for children and at this point I was glad that I was immortal, because it’d probably take fifty years to get NOIR completely under control. “I was naïve to think that I wouldn’t have to sacrifice—”

“You don’t have to sacrifice anymore, Ella.”

I turned to look at her in disbelief. How was she even saying that? Did she know what she, Jace, and Ben would have to sacrifice to be a part of NOIR?

“Look, you and Kale can have the life you want, but you have to stop throwing yourselves into this as if you have no other choice.”

I threw my hands in the air. “What other choice do we have, Sola? The cure is not working properly, this new virus is insidious in nature, and Yuri has mentioned several times that a new cure could take years to create.” I took in a deep breath. I’d placed myself in a situation that seemed without a solution.

Sola stood and wobbled over to me. “You need a break.” She placed a hand on my shoulder tenderly. “And I have a surprise for you.”

I rolled my eyes. “I can’t eat any more of that Swedish chocolate.”

She and I had been sneaking sweets, even though Jace had been on her to lay off the sweets. Sola was still thin, she actually looked as if she swallowed a huge damned marble, but after Jace had read the section about gestational diabetes in What To Expect When Your Chorý Is Expecting written by Yuri and Zed, he’d been on a diet craze; even after Yuri explained that gestational diabetes would and could never be an issue for a healthy Chorý and the section was just for reference to those who were already sick. He hadn’t cared and that was when the great chocolate embargo of twenty-seventeen occurred. It was also when Jace decided it would be best to sleep on our couch for a week, well, it was that or be murdered by his chocolate needing wife. I think he chose wisely.

She rubbed her hands together conspiratorially. “No, but now that you said the “C” word, I need a piece.” She hustled over to the drawer faster than I’d ever seen her walk while she was big with baby Ben. Reaching in the drawer she pulled out a little gold nugget and unwrapped it. Her attention was dedicated to that little chocolate candy from the moment of its unwrapping until she placed it in her mouth. Eyes closed, she savored the semi-sweet nugget.

I cleared my voice. “Um, you have news for me?” I asked feeling a bit out of place as Sola had a rapturous moment with her candy.

Her eyes popped open and her cheeks turned a rosy shade of red. “Jace is still panicking about gestational diabetes.” She threw her wrapper in the trash. “Can you believe that fool thinks a Chorý can get gestational diabetes?” She threw a hand on her hip. “I mean I live off blood, his yummy blood of course, but how in the heck does he still think the Chorý physiology is the same as that of a human? I swear he is a lunatic.” She said all of this while shoving three more chocolates in her mouth. I didn’t want to remind her that sick a Chorý could in fact get gestational diabetes or a rare form of it.

I cleared my throat again. “Sola,” I sighed. “Eat all the chocolate you want since we know it won’t hurt you, just pretend that you don’t.” Her smile faded. “Jace loves you and worries about you. You have to consider the fact that you aren’t going through this alone. He worries and annoys you. I get it.” I smiled and returned to my chair. “Now, what is this news?”

She opened a piece of candy. “I found an Eternal and all I need is a sample of his blood to find a cure for this new virus.”

I replayed her words over and over in my mind before I realized what she’d truly just said. “I’m sorry, did you just say you had the answer to all my problems?”

She nodded with a cheesy grin. “Yes, and also you should know . . . back when we thought to search for these people, we assumed they didn’t want to be found, that there were safeguards keeping them out of the light and all that jazz. But that wasn’t true.” I hedged closer, my butt nearly off the chair. “The Cured Ones, as they are called, are actually the nomads who started this whole damned thing to begin with.”

I sat back astonished and confused. This made no sense. If Aleixandre and his men had truly met fallen angels, then how did Sola’s research come up with the fallen being cured vampires?

“I’m lost. Were they fallen angels or cured vampires?” Kale and I had researched the nomads for a year—or as they were often called, Eternals—but we’d learned nothing new. Sola and Zed had made it their mission to find out more.

“Okay, they are both and this is how. When the fallen were cast from heaven, they were called Demons. Why?” she asked and I racked my brain for the answer.

I scrubbed a hand down my face. I was already sleepy, but the thought of re-hashing the exhausting information Kale and I had scored over for a year brought a tear to my eye. “Um, didn’t we learn they ate human flesh and blood, and in turn were called demons? What does that have to do with anything?”

She opened the laptop and turned it toward me. There was a drawing of a man with long blond hair, shockingly cold gray eyes, and black-scaled wings jutting out of his back.

“Who or what am I looking at?” I asked, still mesmerized by the sight. He was quite handsome with sharp features.

“Oh, this guy?” she said nonchalantly. “He is an Eternal and has granted you a meeting in Paris.” She smiled. Sola was like that. She would say huge things in a tone that made you think she was speaking of the mundane.
