Malcolm Bright, brand new museum curator in a small Welsh Border town, is a little lonely until – acting as emergency archaeological consultant on a new housing development – he crosses the path of Rob Escley, aka Dirty Rob, who makes Mal’s earth move in more ways than one.
Then Rob discovers something wonderful, and together they must combat greedy developers and a treasure hunter determined to get his hands on the find. Are desperate measures justified to save the bones of our fathers? Will Dirty Rob live up to his reputation? Do museum curators really do it meticulously?
Answers must be found for the sake of Mal’s future, his happiness and his heart.
When Malcom "Mal" Bright became the new museum curator in a strange Welsh village he had no idea what fate had in store. Rob "Dirty Rob" Escley is there to begin the ground work for a new housing development, he never thought he'd dig up something old which would lead to something new. When these two have to work together, well it's safe to say nothing will ever quite be the same.
The Bones of Our Fathers is a brilliantly written tale of discovery: friendship, village life, understanding, and of course love. Some might call Bones a slow build or "slow burn" and I suppose that's true to a degree but I found it to be just a discovery that progresses naturally. I say that because in my internal dictionary of fictional definitions a slow burn requires more angst and pain but whatever phrase you use to describe Mal and Rob, it's fun, passionate, just the right amount of drama, and frankly it is just plain lovely.
It may not be the hugest part of the story but I loved how Mal learns to navigate his way around the village life with the help of his interesting receptionist Betty, this factor adds some well timed humor, which in my mind only heightens the enjoyment. I may be an American and to my dismay I have never been to the UK but it is the friendship between Mal and Betty and the village life that made me feel if I opened my front door, I'd be looking at the pub and within walking distance of the museum.
The Bones of Our Fathers is not my first Elin Gregory, okay it is only my second of her tales that I have experienced but it certainly won't be my last. She's definitely an author on my watch for list.
RATING:
Elin Gregory lives in South Wales and works in a museum in a castle built on the edge of a Roman Fort! She reckons that's a pretty cool job.
Elin usually writes on historical subjects, and enjoys weaving the weird and wonderful facts she comes across in her research into her plots. She likes her heroes hard as nails but capable of tenderness when circumstances allow. Often they are in danger, frequently they have to make hard choices, but happy endings are always assured.
Current works in progress include one set during the Great War, another in WW2, one set in the Dark Ages and a series of contemporary romances set in a small town on the Welsh border.
