What is the biggest influence/interest that brought you to this genre?
My first foray into urban fantasy was reading Kim Harrison’s Hollows series and Kelley Armstrong’s Otherworld series. I started both at around the same time, and I was hooked immediately on this cool new kind of fantasy with modern cities mixed with dark, magical, fascinating supernaturals. :)
When writing a book, what is your favorite part of the creative process(outline, plot, character names, editing, etc)?
My favorite part is the writing itself. All the pre-writing prepping or post-writing polishing feels more like a chore (though I’d still take those jobs over doing the dishes). But writing itself—bringing my characters to life, exploring their lives and souls, building their relationships, taking them to crazy new places, and throwing terrifying obstacles in their paths—that’s what I love the most.
When reading a book, what genre do you find most interesting/intriguing?
I flip back and forth between urban fantasy and other kinds of fantasy. I recently read Sarah J. Maas’s Throne of Glass series and I’ve got a stack of similar “fantasy world” books on my bookshelf waiting to be read. Just need to find the time somehow...
If you could co-author with any author, past or present, who would you choose?
I would be honored to cowrite with Anne Bishop. She was the first author whose books (The Black Jewels trilogy) really captured my heart and imagination on a whole new level, and her unique writing style and characters inspired me a lot when I was first starting out.
Have you always wanted to write or did it come to you "later in life"?
Pretty much always. :) I used to daydream stories as a kid, attempted to write my first “novel” when I was about 12, and started writing for fun when I was 14. For a long time, I didn’t think I could have a career as an author, but the popularity of ebooks and accessibility of indie publishing changed that, and I’m so grateful that I could turn my passion into the best job ever!
