Sunday's Safe Word Shelf: Between the Studs by Brigham Vaughn

Summary:
After a busy and successful year at her bakery, divorcée Aimee Lucas decides to splurge on a bathroom renovation. The owner of Lucas’s Fine Cakes and Pastries is tired of lackluster Valentine’s Days, so she’s looking forward to a solo celebration this year. Why bother with a mediocre date when she can relax in a tub with a glass of wine?

Joshua Ward and Matt Mitchell co-own a construction company, but there’s a bit more to their partnership than they let on. Although both men have caught the eye of many a homeowner, they never mix business with pleasure.

When Aimee hires J&M Construction to remodel her bathroom, she never expects to find a date. Much less two.

As the project continues, Aimee, Matt, and Josh find themselves drawn to one another. Matt and Josh are happy together, but they’re looking for a woman to be their third, and it quickly becomes clear Aimee might just be whom they’ve been searching for.

With Valentine’s Day quickly approaching, they all have decisions to make. Can Matt and Josh broach the subject without losing their customer? And will Aimee decide she just wants a fling with the hunky contractors, or is it time for her to take a leap of faith on something more?

When Aimee Lucas decides to turn her bathroom into a mini-at-home spa getaway for herself she never imagined the renovators would change her life.  Joshua Ward and Matt Mitchell have welcomed a third into their relationship before but it never quite met their expectations so when they met Aimee they never expected bathroom fittings, coffee, and baked goods taste testing could lead to more.  Will Aimee open her heart to the new possibilities that Josh and Matt are offering or will the one night of passion be just another one of life's lessons?

Followers of my blog/reviews probably remember how big a fan of Brigham Vaughn's writing I am so when I learned she had a new Valentine's Day novella coming out and had the opportunity to read it, it was a no brainer that my answer was "Yes, please!"  Having said that, no matter how much I love an author's previous work I always go into a new story with a completely open mind.  Do I have expectations based on previous work? Sure but I never let it influence my love-or-hate-meter with the new words before me.  So is Between the Studs worth it?  Short answer: Most definitely!

I could easily see myself in Aimee when it comes to the war in her own heart between intriguing possibilities vs. fearing outside prejudices, after all it isn't only her heart she's thinking of but she has a business in a relatively small-ish community that could be effected.  As for Josh and Matt, well what's not to love?  They are both so free and comfortable with themselves but I love how the author shows it isn't just Aimee's heart at risk.  The passion between all parties is pretty obvious and absolutely lovely so if you are looking for a story with heat, this is definitely for you but if you want more than just sex well you are certainly in luck because, yes the heat is just WOWWING off the page but its really a minor part in the overall storytelling.

Would I like to see more of Aimee, Josh, and Matt? Duh, of course but if this is the only time the author visits this trio she certainly left this reader more than satisfied😉😉 I personally don't know if I have the mentality for a poly relationship but like Aimee, I feel you never really know what you are capable of or open to until you find that person or persons before you.  Between the Studs is a fun and sexy novella for Valentine's Day but it also has plenty of friendship, passion, and heart.

RATING:

Paula nodded knowingly when Aimee finished. “They’re totally into you! I definitely didn’t get any cozy chats with them over coffee or flirtatious banter.”

“Yeah, but both of them? I mean, are they just hedging their bets? Figuring I’ll choose one or the other?”

“Maybe. Maybe not though. They could just be into that.”

“Into what?” Aimee’s eyes got big as she realized what Paula meant. “Oh. You mean …?”

“Mmhmm. Maybe they like gettin’ it on together with a gorgeous woman.”

Threesomes. Well that wasn’t something Aimee had ever considered. Well, there had been the one time in college where she’d sort of ended up in bed with a couple, but she hadn’t been into the girl enough to go down on her and it had involved a lot of drunken fumbling. It had been sort of hot though, she mused.

But two guys? That was something altogether different. And this was no college experimentation. She was a grown adult for goodness sake. She owned a house and a business. She couldn’t really be thinking about it. Could she?

“You’re thinking about it, aren’t you?” Paula teased.

“No!” Aimee protested. But Paula’s arched eyebrow and the disbelief etched on her face prompted her to clarify. “I mean, yes, I’m thinking about what you suggested but not because I’m considering doing it.”

“Why not?”

Aimee sputtered. “Because that’s crazy! And so not me.”

“When was the last time you got laid?”

“Way too long ago,” Aimee admitted. “But come on, I can’t just answer the door tomorrow in lingerie and fuck me heels and say ‘hey boys, wanna fuck me?”

Summary:
It’s just one night of kinky sex. What could possibly go wrong?

When the birthday present from her Master is one night of no holds barred kinky sex with his ex-army buddy, Carmel Blythe doesn’t know what to think. A good subbie obeys her Master’s wishes, however, and there is no denying the instant connection she has with this experienced Dom.

Topping Gideon’s gorgeous wife is the least Nash Jonas can do to repay the debt he owes the man. After all Gideon took the bullet aimed at Nash—the very one that cost the other man his army career, and put him in a wheelchair.  If only Nash could keep those pesky emotions out of the deal.

Gideon cannot stand to see the sadness in his wife’s eyes, nor the restlessness in his best buddy’s soul. Pushing the two people he loves together, will surely satisfy everyone’s physical and emotional needs.

Carmel’s choice may well change everything…

“When did you stop trusting me to make the right decision for us?” Carmel blinked in shock, and he knew his words hit home when she opened her mouth and nothing came out bar a strangled squeak. Damn it, he wanted to pull her on his lap and kiss the worry off her face, but they needed to sort this once and for all. It was the very basis of their relationship after all, and Carmel needed to know how much her reaction had hurt that dynamic.
     “I don’t…I mean I do…That’s not fair.”
She dropped her gaze when she mumbled those words, and he dropped his voice on purpose.
“And running out like that without giving me a chance to explain was fair, was it? Turning off your phone and refusing to speak to me was fair? Putting us through hell for something that I did with our best interests at heart was fair? Bearing in mind you had a choice to go through with it and you chose Nash, yet you didn’t extend me the courtesy of explaining my reasons. I thought you knew me better than that.”
A myriad of emotions crossed Carmel’s expressive face. Shock, anger, denial, sadness. It was the latter that tore at his heart. His dove had been sad for a very long time, yet she’d never showed it this openly, and Gideon bit back a curse.
The longer she sat without saying anything, the more wretched he felt inside, and he almost didn’t hear her whispered reply over the blood roaring in his ears as his world seemed to crumple around him.
“I’m sorry, Sir.” She raised a tentative hand and touched his arm briefly before she slid off the bench and knelt in front of him. Her hair fell across her face, hiding her expression, and again he had to strain to hear her next words. “I didn’t see it that way. I was just so confused, and…Please forgive me, Sir. I would never do anything to hurt us.”
Gideon reached down, wrapped his hands in Carmel’s hair, and tugged her head up until she had no choice but to look at him, and his agitation fled at the love that shone out of her sea-green eyes. It soothed the hurt in his soul, and his chest tightened with the sheer force of his relief.
“I know that, dove, and neither would I. What I did, I did for us, though I realize I could have handled it better.”
Confusion crossed her expressive features, and there was the brief flare of anger in her eyes before her submissive side won over, and she closed her eyes and pulled a deep breath into her lungs.
“Thank you for that, Sir, but I still don’t understand why you did this. We were fine the way we were. Now…now everything has changed. I don’t know what you want from me anymore.” There was a suspicious wobble to those hesitant words, and Gideon tightened his hold on her hair until her breathing sped up and she whimpered. Her fingers curled into his legs, not that he could feel them.
Not for the first time Gideon mentally cursed his useless appendages—all of them, for that matter.      At least if his fucking dick worked, then…Gideon cursed and released his hold on Carmel. She swayed slightly but maintained her position on the floor, and he saw rather than felt her wrapping her arms around his legs and resting her head on his lap.
It used to be their favorite greeting when he came home. Her on her knees, nuzzling into his groin.      Invariably his cock would leap into action, and she’d suck him off, or they would have hot, no-holds-barred sex where they couldn’t keep their hands off each other.
He pinched the bridge of his nose and forced himself to take deep breaths in and out.
“Sir, Gideon, please talk to me. I need to understand what’s going on, why you did this now, please?”
Gideon opened his eyes to find her looking up at him, and he wordlessly patted his lap. The speed with which she scrambled on top of him made his heart feel lighter, and he pulled her into a hug that he never wanted to end. She ran her hands up and down his arms and round his back, dropping kisses along his skin, until he grasped the base of her neck and took charge. Their lips smashed together in a desperate need to reconnect, and he could taste the salt of her tears on his tongue. Putting all of his pent-up emotion and frustration into the kiss, he deepened it, only releasing her lips briefly to pull in much needed oxygen into his lungs before he fucked her mouth with his tongue, like he wished he could do it for real.
Carmel squirmed and wriggled in his arms, and he drank in her needy little whimpers. The urge to run his hand under her skirt and see how wet she was for him was almost too much to resist, but they were in her friend’s garden. The last thing he wanted to do was piss Nicole off even more than she was already, so he forced himself to break the kiss. Carmel shook her head in denial, and tried to move in closer to prolong the contact, but he pulled her head back by her hair.
A shudder went through her, and when she opened her eyes, her passion-filled gaze stole his breath. With her rosy skin flushed, her lips swollen from his kisses, and her nipples hard little points that begged for his attention, his mouth watered and his skin itched with the need to take her, to be able to make her his in the most basic, primal way known to man, yet he couldn’t fucking do it.
He shook his head and groaned, and Carmel straightened and, taking his head between her trembling hands, rested her forehead against his.
“It’s okay. It doesn’t matter. I love you.”
“But it does fucking matter. You keep saying it doesn’t, but it does, Carmel, or you would never let Nash near you.”

Author Bio:
Glutton for punishment would be a good description for Doris…at least that’s what she hears on an almost daily basis when people find out that she has a brood of nine children, ranging from adult to toddler, and lives happily in a far-too-small house, cluttered with children, pets, dust bunnies, and one very understanding and supportive husband. Domestic goddess she is not.
There is always something better to do, after all, like working on the latest manuscript and trying not to scare the locals even more than usual by talking out loud to the voices in her head. Her characters tend to be pretty insistent to get their stories told, and you will find Doris burning the midnight oil on a regular basis. Only time to get any peace and quiet, and besides, sleep is for wimps.
She likes to spin sensual, sassy, and sexy tales involving alpha heroes to die for, and heroines who give as good as they get. From contemporary to paranormal, BDSM to F/F and Ménage, haunting love stories are guaranteed.
