Parker by Jillian Quinn

Title: Parker
Author: Jillian Quinn
Series: Face-Off #1
Genre: Contemporary Adult Romance
Release Date: February 12, 2017

Summary:
Former collegiate athlete and successful sports agent, Charlotte “Coach” Coachman, is a straight shooter who has a very strict policy—no dating clients. The loves of her life are coaching little league basketball and managing the careers of her players, leaving no room for men.

Coach hasn’t met an athlete she couldn’t handle and a deal she couldn’t close—until she meets Alex Parker—the NHL’s most notorious bad boy both on and off the ice.

Alex is the best defenseman in the league, breaking records along with hearts. He’s made a name for himself as a womanizer, and after a scandal involving the owner’s granddaughter, Alex is traded to Philadelphia. Still reeling from the loss of his father, Alex is on a downward spiral, drowning himself in booze and women, until Coach takes him under her wing.

She might be attracted to the sexy hockey star, and certainly not immune to his charms, but Coach can see that Alex needs her help, and coaching players is what she does best. Now that the lines are blurred and the passion between them is too strong to deny, Coach has to decide if Alex is worth making an exception to her rules.

1. What is the biggest influence/interest that brought you to this genre?
I was a fantasy writer before I read Beautiful Disaster by Jamie McGuire. I devoured that book in one sitting after seeing it in a newsletter from Writer’s Digest. After that, I decided to look more into romance novels and ended up liking them so much that I shifted gears. My interests changed over time, and now, romance is my favorite genre to read and write. I had also realized I was writing fantasy romance and not just fantasy that would appeal to hardcore fans, which also prompted the switch to romance.

2. When writing a book, what is your favorite part of the creative process(outline, plot, character names, editing, etc)?
Character names come to me naturally. When an idea pops into my head, I can see the characters so vividly that names are not hard for me to figure out. I love plotting my novels, but plotting is also the hardest part of writing a book. Coming up with title names, series names, character names, and basic plot lines are very easy for me. It’s when I get into the middle of the book that I have to sit down and map it all out and make sure my story has the proper flow. That’s when I pull my beta readers into the process. Sitting down with my readers who are also fellow bloggers and close friends, to go over the book is one of my favorite parts of writing a book. I love that I get to share that experience with them.

3. When reading a book, what genre do you find most interesting/intriguing?
I read anything and everything. I mostly gravitate toward romance because that is what I write and prefer to read, but before I found romance, I was a huge legal thriller and horror fan. I also like young adult, contemporary, science fiction, mysteries, and fantasy novels.

4. If you could co-author with any author, past or present, who would you choose?
I would want to co-author a book with Jamie McGuire since she is the reason I started writing romance. I think our writing flow would mesh well together. She writes a lot of books with bad boys and so do I. That would be a dream to write a book with her.

5. Have you always wanted to write or did it come to you "later in life"?
I have always been a writer. I was probably a story teller long before a writer. When I was about four or five, I was always making up stories, and when I got older, I wrote them down on paper. But I didn’t start to seriously write until about two or three years ago. I have not stopped writing since.

Thank you for having me on your blog.

I hear the elevator doors close behind us. Spinning around with Rico on my back, I find one of the hottest men I have ever laid eyes on. He’s taller than me by a few inches, putting him around six feet four inches, give or take.

As he scratches the bit of stubble along his angular jaw, I see a tiny smile forming at the corner of his mouth. This man is studying me, as if we know each other, with a curious look in his grayish-blue eyes. And I think I know him.

For a second, I contemplate why his face looks so familiar and why his strong arms and toned body make me think of him slamming me against the wall. That’s because he’s Alex Parker. He looks different in person—hotter even. During games, he always looks so angry, and in the videos I’ve seen online, the ones where he was drunk out of his skull, he looks disheveled.

Alex pushes a hand through his shaggy brown hair, moving it off his forehead, with a grin. “I thought I recognized that move,” he says with a wink.

“Coach has skills that pay the bills,” Rico says, tapping me on the shoulder.

I chuckle and set Rico on the floor. “You’ve got that right, kid.” Then, I look at Alex, confused. “I thought you weren’t moving into the apartment until tomorrow night.”

He slides his big hands into his jean pockets and shrugs. “Mickey said it wouldn’t be a problem if I came early. I had to get out of DC. I didn’t see the point in sticking around any longer than I had to. Is that a problem?”

I shake my head. “No, it’s not a problem. I just wasn’t expecting you, is all.”

Scanning the hall, I notice he has an oversize hockey equipment bag on the floor behind him. Talk about being a minimalist.

“Where’s Kayla? Did you come here by yourself?”

“She said she’d meet me here.”

I slip my cell phone out of my pocket and tap out a text message to Kayla. There’s no reason for my secretary to come all the way over here from the suburbs when I have extra sets of keys to all my apartments.

Rico tugs on my track pants, and I look down at him. “Is that the famous hockey player you told me about?” he whispers, his hand covering the side of his mouth.

I smile and give him a quick nod.

A squeal escapes Rico’s lips. “This is so cool.”

“Do you like ice hockey?” Alex asks Rico, bending down to match his height.

Rico glances in Alex’s direction, wide-eyed. “I’ve watched a few games with Coach before, and I like it, but my mom can’t afford to let me play on a team. She says hockey is too expensive.”

Alex puts his hands on his kneecaps, making it look effortless at his size, dwarfing Rico with his thick body. I didn’t expect the NHL’s biggest playboy to like children, not with the disrespect I’ve heard he shows to women, players, and managers. He might be one of Mickey’s favorite clients, but he’s also the one who is the most hassle. And, now, I’ve been assigned as his babysitter.

“I think we can fix that.”

Alex looks up and into my eyes, and I practically melt under his gaze. Those eyes, that smirk—everything about him makes it hard for me to focus.

“Why don’t you two come to the game on Saturday afternoon? I can leave tickets at the box office for you.”

“Are you serious?” Rico jumps up and down next to me. “Can we go, Coach? Can we? Please!”

I get free tickets to the games all the time. That’s one of the perks of being a sports agent, but this is for Rico, and for once, it’s not a guise to lure me there for a business meeting.

“I have to visit one of my players in New Jersey on Saturday morning, and we have to ask your mom first if it’s okay. But I can have Jamie pick you up, and I’ll meet you there.”

Normally, my best friend since childhood and assistant coach, Jameson O’Connor, would have been at tonight’s game, but he had to work late again.

Rico wraps his arms around my stomach. “Thanks, Coach.”

I shoot Alex a quick smile and mouth, Thank you. This is the last thing I ever expected from him. Maybe he’s not as much of a jerk as the papers portray.

Linked to Luca and a criminal underworld, Izzie discovers she’s more like him than she thought. But a future with Luca could mean swapping her diamond bracelets for a pair of handcuffs.

*Corrupt Me is a standalone novel that is the first book in the Philly Corruption series.*

Face up on the coffee table, a copy of Philadelphia Magazine haunted me. Grandfather’s cold dark features stared back, giving me an eerie feeling, as though he were in the room with us. Even at a distance, he frightened me. He sat in a gold throne, dressed in a black Gucci suit, his elbow on the arm and his fist resting under his chin. Angelo Rinaldi III had the power to kill you with one look.

The headline read, Everything Rinaldi Touches Turns to Gold.

That part was true, given his string of successful mergers and acquisitions. He had taken his father’s profitable holding company and turned it into a multibillion-dollar conglomerate. One day, that would be my legacy—sitting atop my seat of power while glaring beneath me as my cold heart devoured everyone around me. I didn’t want to turn into Grandfather, but I had a feeling that the Rinaldi aura would settle so far beneath my skin, it would creep into my bones.

I came from a long line of assholes. There was no nice way to say it. Philadelphia Magazine had done a four-page spread on how our family made our money. Of course, they’d left out the real story—the one that would have blown the lid off our secrets, the story only a handful of people knew. Investors wouldn’t take too kindly to racketeers investing their hard-earned money.

I chugged half the mug, the warm liquid running down my throat, and threw the magazine on the floor with a sigh. “Luca’s such a Preston. I can’t believe I offered to let him meet up with us. Can we go somewhere else instead?”

“Five years later, and you still call all guys Preston. It’s time to come up with a new name. And there’s no way in hell you’re canceling. I’ve been wanting to hook up with Hunter since sophomore year. Don’t ruin this for me.”

“They’re all Prestons. The more money they have, the worse they are. It’s just a fact.”

Silvia had dated dozens of men like Luca and Hunter. For illustration’s sake, I would call them Preston, after the first snobby rich kid who had broken her heart. Even his name, Preston Greyson, screamed pretentious. I mean, c’mon.

I used boys when I wanted and on my terms.

Luca was wrong on so many levels and not because of his familial connections. If anything, knowing they operated outside the law turned me on. His defiance of authority, the way he’d gripped me in the quad, his erection pressed against my thigh had made me wet with anticipation.

Why did the wrong thing always feel so right? Was there something inherently evil inside me, trying to break free?

I glanced at Silvia as I flipped through the channels. “What do you think? Should I hook up with Luca?”

Everyone on campus, for the most part, knew the Marchese family ran the Philadelphia crime family. I’d caught him staring at me during classes, and I’d dodged him any chance I could for the past three years.

But, today, I’d straddled him, and I’d liked it. He could have taken me on the lawn, and I would have let him.

And, now, I had Luca on the brain. Everything about him screamed danger, and I wanted him to corrupt me in every way possible. A red flag waved above my head, but I ignored it. I remembered him from when we were younger—though I’d never admit it. Doing so would mean my family was just as crooked, and in the eyes of investors, we had to appear squeaky clean. We had a public image to uphold.

“Hmm…” Silvia slid her hand behind her head, staring up at the ceiling, as if it held the answer to my question. “I don’t know. He’ll just use you for sex and go on his way, like he does with every other girl.”

I filled my cup with more liqueur than coffee and set the hot carafe on the pot holder on the table.

Sex wasn’t about love; it was about power. And that came to mind as I responded, “Not if I use him first.”
