πŸ‘»πŸŽƒMonday Morning's MenuπŸŽƒπŸ‘»: Fergus's Hurricane by Taylor Rylan

Summary:

Vampires of the Beloved Gem #3
Even aged Scotch cannot compare to the sweetest wine when it comes to your beloved.

Fergus McGregor doesn’t like change. It was difficult enough leaving behind the pub that had been in his family for centuries. Now he has to accept not only a new boat but also more help behind the bar? Though he prefers to work alone, when he sees the soulful brown eyes across from him, they make him want things he never thought he wanted.

Seven years have passed since Montgomery’s older brother left and came to the human realm, leaving a young Montgomery behind. Now, Montgomery is old enough to leave the fae realm and finally find his own mate. He doesn’t care who he is, only that he got away from his parents. First, according to the Fate Thomas, he has to take a little vacation aboard the Beloved Gem. But who is the cranky redhead behind the bar, and why does he make his body tingle?

Montgomery grew up thinking vampires couldn’t be trusted around fae because of the draw of their blood. He’s learned differently and discovered the pleasure from Fergus’s bite can be quite…enticing. And well, Fergus learns just how much trouble a little fae can be.

Fergus’s Hurricane is the third book in the Vampires of the Beloved Gem series. Each book in the series focuses on a different couple, but these books should be read in order as there is an ongoing backstory, and previous couples will make appearances in future books. This is a fated mate MPREG story with plenty of sexy times. You should expect all the normal vampire shenanigans and sometimes love bites in unexpected places.

FERGUS
Mo chridhe: my heart (mo CHree-yuh) Stress is on the first syllable CH pronounced as in loch or Bach; not as in church

Was it too much to ask that my crates of supplies be put where I wanted them? It wasn’t as if this was a new request. Not at all. It had been the same request since I had joined the Gem and Master Nikolai discovered I had bartending experience. If owning a pub for the better part of a century counted as experience.

I checked the new stockroom and cringed. The beer was stacked on top of the liquor, and both were on top of the kegs. Whoever had delivered the supplies this time around didn’t know what they were doing. And whoever had accepted the delivery was going to find their arse chewed out just as soon as I found out who they were.

I started sorting crates, organizing to type and if they needed refrigerated or not. A knock on the storeroom door stopped my progress. When Matteo’s curly head poked in, I cursed under my breath.

“I heard that. Too bad though. I found you, and Master Nikolai is back and is asking for you.”

“Be right along.” I placed the case of longnecks with the rest of the beer and left the storeroom. Matteo was right outside the door, waiting for me.

“Matteo, I have to ask.”

“What’s that?”

“How is it that you are so much shorter than the rest of us?” It was rude and I knew it, but I had wondered for years.

“Why are you so much grouchier than the rest of us?” Matteo fired back.

I glared at him. I was not grouchy. Matteo pointed at me, then rolled his eyes. He ignored me the rest of the way through the boat. When we finally reached Master Nikolai’s office, Matteo knocked twice, opened the door, gestured me inside, then closed the door with him outside. I turned, looking around the room, finding a smiling Master sitting on the front of his desk.

“Master,” I said, dipping my head in respect.

“Fergus. Come in and have a seat.”

That did not bode well. What had I done? I tried to remember what I could have done to get myself into trouble, but I was coming up with nothing. Remembering Master Nikolai had just come back from a long weekend in Montana visiting Gio, I brought up the baby.

“How is little Angelo doing, sir?” I asked as I sat. The transformation on Master Nikolai’s face was instant.

“Getting bigger. He’s gaining weight and is completely healthy. You should see Lucius with him. That baby has him completely wrapped around all of his fingers. That is not why I asked for you to be brought to my office, so don’t think I will let you distract me by mentioning my grandson.”

“No, sir.” I was shocked when I first heard that Master Nikolai had a son, Giovanni. Diego told me that he wasn’t his biological son but had raised him from when he was a young boy, and he considered him as such.

“It is kind of you to ask, and when I talk to them this evening, I will be sure to let them know you asked after him. He is such a joyful little baby. But the reason I asked for you is because I have hired a new bartender.”

My world dropped out from under me.

“I’m sorry…I have displeased you in some way?”

“I did not mean it that way. Only that I have hired a second one. You will be working in shifts now, allowing you to have more downtime.”

“I do not require time off of work.”

Master Nikolai pinched the bridge of his nose. “Fergus, although I appreciate your dedication to what you do, you have not taken a single vacation day since you came to us fifteen years ago. You are an excellent bartender. But with the now larger boat, there will be more guests. That means more people at the bar.”

Would it though? The majority of my customers were the humans that used to be on the cruise. We catered to only paranormals now, and more often than not, they were not what one would call big drinkers. It took so much more alcohol to affect us.

“If that is what you wish, then I will do my best to welcome them.”

“Good. His name is Adam. He will be at the bar at five this afternoon.”

“Yes, sir.” I sat there, waiting. Was that all or was there more? With Master Nikolai, you never knew.

“Good. I am looking for a third, but these things take time as I am incredibly picky about it. You understand, don’t you?”

“Not really, Master. But you feel a need to hire additional bartenders, who am I to argue?” I started to stand but thought better of it and stopped.

“There was nothing else, Fergus. You are free to go back to whatever it was you were doing.”

“Righting the stockroom. I wasn’t here when the order was delivered.”

“Another reason for a second bartender. It will allow for you to not always have to be present for things such as this. I apologize if a mess was made of your stockroom. I will have someone along to help you right it.”

“No need, Master. I was almost finished when Matteo found me.”

“Very well. I will see you later this evening, then.”

I knew I had been dismissed, so I nodded to my master and left the office. I found Matteo standing just outside the door but ignored him. I found my way back to the bar and went back to fixing my stockroom.

Why would he hire a new bartender? I didn’t need a day off. When I took time off, things like this happened. I looked around my stockroom and tried to remain calm. Another bartender just meant someone else in my space.

I did not like people in my space. Ever. It wasn’t until Diego’s little beloved came along that I let someone behind the bar—other than Master Nikolai, that was. But I knew that wouldn’t last because little Nigel had been pregnant. Now he and Diego were new dads, and Nigel was busy taking care of Noah.

I sighed. I missed my family. Mostly I missed my nieces and nephews. I used to love getting to spend time with them, but we all had to move on because there were too many questions about how we never seemed to age.

Which meant an “accident” had happened, taking the lives of several of us. The younger generation was still there, carrying on the family tradition. While my sisters and brother had moved to other places in Europe and Australia, I chose to come to America simply because I was ready for a change. Master Nikolai was more than willing to offer that to me, something I was grateful for.

I finished organizing the stockroom, then started stocking the bar. I needed it to be ready. It was the first night of a new cruise, which was always busy, and it wouldn’t be good to run out of something if it could be prevented by simply stocking the bar.

After I had made sure everything was ready, I went to the employee dining hall and grabbed lunch. I was perfectly happy sitting all by myself at a corner table, but that simply wasn’t meant to be. No. Diego decided he needed to join me. I wouldn’t have minded if he had his beloved and their son with him. But just Diego? I found myself continually struggling to relate to our coven’s second.

“I did not do anything,” I said and simply went back to eating my meal.

“Who said you did?”

I set my fork down, wiped my mouth, then took a drink of water before returning the glass to the table. “In the fifteen years I have been here, I can count on one hand how many times you have willingly come over to sit with me. What is the issue today, Diego?”

Diego looked genuinely surprised at my statement, but it was true. True, I didn’t make an effort to fraternize with the others, and I was a bit…grouchy. But either I was in trouble, or Diego needed something.

“Very well. I was sent by Nigel. He had asked about you and wondered how you were doing. I told him I would check in with you and see.”

I felt myself soften at the mention of the sweet shifter. He was so overwhelmed and sick when he first arrived on the boat. I felt bad for him, did my best to distract him from his stomach being upset, and realized I liked his company. He was…safe. He was already mated to Diego, and I knew that the younger vampire wouldn’t think I was after his beloved.

Nigel was funny, easy to talk to, and reminded me of my brother’s beloved. Having him around seemed to make the evenings go faster and helped to alleviate some of the homesickness I knew I was having.

“That is so very thoughtful of him. How is he doing? And your little babe? I haven’t seen Noah in a few weeks.”

“Nigel has been spending some time in Amherst. His penguin felt the need to come out more than usual, and they have more room and a pool.” Diego chuckled while staring out the window at the river. “When I arrived on Saturday morning, it was to see both Nigel and Theodore waddling through the manor as if it were a normal thing.” Diego shrugged, then looked at me. “I guess for them it was. Something like that really wouldn’t be appropriate here on the boat. He can shift in our suite, but unless I’m with him, there is nobody to watch Noah.”

“Is this normal? For him to spend so much time shifted?”

“I asked. Theo said it wasn’t unheard of, especially after a pregnancy. Anyway, Nigel is in our suite for this cruise. He’s said his penguin is finally happy, and he’s really missed being away from me. I’ll admit, it’s been difficult not having them here on the boat with me.”

“Although I cannot relate to missing my beloved, I do know what it is like to miss loved ones. I am glad they are here with you. Any news on the Evergreen pack?”

“Not since the alpha was put to death. With his oldest already dead, the pack was passed down to his youngest since they had a daughter that had moved away and had no interest in coming back to run the pack. The youngest seems more accepting and understanding. He has his work cut out for him though. The pack seems to have a lot of members that share beliefs with their old alpha.”

I winced. The beliefs of the old alpha and his firstborn were the reason Diego and Nigel had issues while out in town in the first place. It was also why Diego had done what he had to protect his then pregnant beloved. None of us had faulted him for it, and most all of us had been put in a situation where we’d had to take a life before. Sadly, it was just how many paranormals had to live their lives.

“Yeah. On the one hand, I feel bad for the guy. But on the other, I don’t. So many of us were dealt shitty parents or families to have to deal with. But he’s going to have his work cut out for him with weeding out the ones left in the pack that didn’t want to move forward with the times.”

“I haven’t heard. Are they causing issues still?” I picked up my water and took another drink.

“Not for us, no. Last I heard, the new council had enforcers that they’ve started sending out. You’d have to ask Master Nikolai more about that though. He has more of an inside on that through Gio.”

“If the mood strikes, I will.” I glanced at my watch, already knowing it was getting close to time for the guests to start boarding. I stood, grabbing my plate and water glass, hoping Diego would take the hint.

“Good. By the way.”

I stopped and returned my attention to the younger vampire. When he didn’t continue, I raised an eyebrow at him.

“Nigel would very much like it if you would come by tomorrow before your shift to see him.”

I was a bit surprised because I’d never been invited to anyone’s suite before. I’d never even hung out with them outside of normal “staff” meetings.

“I will stop by before lunch if that time works for you.”

“It does. I’ll be sure to let Nigel know.”

I nodded once, then walked away. After I scraped my plate and placed everything in the bin, I went back to my own room. I didn’t ever welcome the guests on board, nor did I attend their first dinner. That meant I would have the afternoon to myself to either rest or triple-check everything in the bar area. The casino didn’t open until 7:00 p.m., and with it, my bar opened. It was quite the gig, actually. I was only technically at work, dealing with guests for seven hours. But there was of course the early morning hours that came with restocking and such.

I ducked into the staff quarters and walked to the middle of the hallway and held my card in front of my room. With the new Gem came new technology, and although I was all for advancement, I missed the old, thick iron keys sometimes. I still had some in a frame in my room, but they just weren’t practical anymore. Pity.

When I stepped inside my room, I sighed in relief. My tiny window was covered, blocking out the sun. Everything was perfectly in its place, and I toed off my shoes before I stripped down to my boxers to take a nap. I had a feeling it was going to be a crazy night, and a nap would most likely do me good, so after I laid my clothes over the back of my lone chair, I turned the light off and walked over to my bed, where I slid between the cool sheets. I sighed at the feeling.

I missed having a warm body lying next to me, but I learned long ago that it did not do well to become too attached to someone that wasn’t my beloved. They either eventually found their own fated mate or simply tired of being associated with a vampire.

Thinking of those past relationships did nothing but cause more frustration, so I rolled over and stared at the white wall. There were thin, light silver stripes on the wallpaper, something that was both a nice touch as well as an annoyance because it simply looked a little too much like a hotel. Then again, we were a floating hotel and casino.

I closed my eyes, wondering if I would be able to doze off, and if so, what would today’s dreams be about? Would I be allowed to rest peacefully, or would my dreams be about past horrors that I would much rather forget?

I lay there, staring at the wall, then rolled to do the same with the ceiling. My mind did not want to give in and rest though, and that would be an issue later this evening if I couldn’t get some sleep.

I pulled my blanket over my head, hoping the added barrier would help trick my body into thinking it was time to be asleep instead of awake. The biggest issue was having to get up in the early morning hours to deal with deliveries. Perhaps Master Nikolai was onto something when he hired another bartender. Having a second person that could be trusted with such things could be beneficial.

I finally felt myself start to become drowsy and closed my eyes and let my body rest, hoping for the best.

When my alarm went off hours later, immediately I felt the boat in motion, telling me that I had slept through not only the departure, which could be a noisy affair with the steam horn, but everything else that had happened since I had eaten my late breakfast.

I lay there a moment, allowing my body to come fully awake, then rolled from the bed to get started with my day. I had to prep the bar and would need to figure out how much the new guy knew or didn’t know.

After a quick shower, I dressed in my uniform of black slacks, a black button-down shirt, and a crimson-red silk tie. I left my room and went to join the others in the dining hall. Like always, I would sit alone, preferring my own company rather than having to listen to the others go on and on about this or that—usually things that did not interest me in the slightest.

Dinner tonight—or lunch for those of us getting ready to come on to shift—consisted of toasted ravioli, salad, garlic knots, and triple-chocolate cake. I did not quite understand the pairing of ravioli with another grain side dish, but it was something I had come to accept. We ate what the guests did, and tonight’s main option was toasted ravioli, so that was what we got.

Why couldn’t we have a good haggis or a meat pie? They had smoked salmon every cruise, so there was that. But still, was it too much to have some beans? Or even a good stew? Aside from my family, I probably missed the foods from Scotland more than anything. But when you landed on a casino riverboat filled with Italians, the cuisine shifted drastically.

I filled my plate, then went back to the table I had been at earlier. I made it halfway through my meal before Diego showed back up. I would have complained a bit if not for the fact that he wasn’t alone.

“Fergus, this is Adam, your new bartender. I thought I would introduce you here, then the two of you can talk about shifts, supplies, and all that other fun stuff before you sulked off to your bar.”

“Hi there. Do you mind if I join you?” Adam asked. I sent Diego a glare while he walked off, smirking. I would definitely get back at him somehow.

“I don’t mind, no. Have a seat.”

“Thanks. My mate is in our room, still trying to come to grips with the fact that we’re on a boat with a bunch of vampires.”

That piqued my interest, and Adam seemed to realize that.

“She’s human. It’s one of the reasons why we’ve not really belonged to a pack or anything for some time. My old pack didn’t accept humans as mates, and my wolf was more than happy to spend time with ours, living in the suburbs.”

“What changed?”

“The same as always, it seems. We don’t age, and others around us did. We decided to sell our house and move elsewhere. It was pure luck I found this position.”

“Do you have any bartending experience at all?”

Adam smiled while chewing.

“I do. I spent the last ten years as head bartender at a popular bar in Colorado. It wasn’t uncommon for us to be filled to capacity every night, even on Tuesdays, which were usually slower for a lot of the other local places.”

“Good to hear. If you’re as good as you are implying, I think we’ll get along just fine.”

“They told me you’d be a hard sell. I hope to prove them wrong.” Adam grinned again, then went back to eating. We ate in silence, something I was grateful for. As the evening went on, I’d find out just how much Adam did or didn’t know.

Author Bio:

The Men of Crooked Bend Series is what started it all for me and it was incredibly difficult to let those men go. It was originally supposed to be a trilogy but it ended up as a ten book series with a bonus book that's part of The Snow Globe Christmas Series. In the Men of Crooked Bend series, you get to know the cowboys and other men of Wild Creek Ranch in Crooked Bend, Wyoming (a totally fictitious town). The series is set in the foothills of the Grand Teton Mountains, a place I fell in love with as a teenager.

I have a closely related spin-off series called Sulfur Springs. In it you leave Wild Creek and go to the little neighbor town of Sulfur Springs and meet the sexy men of the Sulfur Springs Fire Depart, the sheriff's department, as well as quite a few US Marshals. You see some familiar faces but you also meet some very new ones. It’s finally finished and ended up being a nine book series.

I love to read, it’s always been one of my favorite things to do since I can remember. When I started writing, I couldn't decide if I wanted to write contemporary or paranormal as I love both. I chose contemporary but still, paranormal was talking to me and those darn shifters kept saying, “tell our story, it’ll be fun.” So I did. And it was. That’s how I started my Honey Creek Den series. Honey Creek is another totally fictitious town set on Flathead Lake (a real place) in Montana. I've never been there, but hope to get there at some point. Honey Creek Den is finished with the planned six books. The Timber Valley Wolf Pack is also finished with six books and now I've moved onto the Warlocks of Amherst Series. This series takes us away from the den and pack and we get to know Edison's warlocks in Amherst, Massachusetts.

When I'm not busy writing about cowboys, architects, sheriffs, firefighters, US Marshals, bears, tigers, or warlocks (to name just a few), I like to read (who doesn't?). Because of my limited free time, I’m fond of short stories and novellas. I can be found on Amazon, Book Bub, Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter.

Random Paranormal Tales of 2019 Part 10

Moonlight by K Evan Coles
Summary:
Ryen Justice lives a quiet existence in Sequim, Washington, running a successful horse farm with his twin brother and sister-in-law. Still, something nameless in him yearns for more.

An old barn on the farm becomes Ryen’s haven where he spends evenings watching the moon and stars. With Halloween approaching, he volunteers to decorate the barn for a party, knowing the job will guarantee him more time alone.

One night as Ryen labors, a man walks out of the woods. Ryen knows he should feel apprehensive, but he is intrigued by the dark-haired stranger who calls himself called Kamer. What Ryen doesn’t know is that lurking beneath Kamer's handsome face lies something that could prove dangerous to both Ryen’s body and soul.

Original Review November 2018:
Moonlight is the first solo work by K Evan Coles I've read and it certainly left me hungry for more.  As a bit of an introvert myself, I definitely understood Ryen's need for alone time but I also appreciated how his twin and sister-in-law, though hating to see him alone, understood his need for the peace and quiet even if a bit reluctantly.  Pushy family members really tend to grate on me so this element was a definite plus for me. As for the connection between Ryen and Kamer, well let me just say it was deliciously heartwarming.  The fun and/or troubleπŸ˜‰ these boys could get up to would make for some very intriguing reading but whether we get more or this is it, you will definitely swipe that last page of Moonlight completely entertained.

RATING:

Unimaginable by Iyana Jenna
Summary:
Callum Saxon wakes up to a totally different universe where all around him is water. Strangely he can breathe it as if it’s air. The bad thing is he can't remember how he got there. He can't remember himself, either.

Ainsley Carlisle is more than a man with long blond hair. He’s a unicorn shifter with secrets as widely stretched as the rainbow supposedly coming out of his rear. Ainsley won’t help Callum uncover who he is because Ainsley wants him to remember it himself.

In this new universe, Callum has to survive the creatures that live there, such as vampires, shifters, werewolves, you name it. But there’s more to Callum than meets the eye.

The book is planned as part of a series but can be read as a standalone.

Slow Heat by Leta Blake
Summary:
Heat of Love #1
A lustful young alpha meets his match in an older omega with a past.

Professor Vale Aman has crafted a good life for himself. An unbonded omega in his mid-thirties, he's long since given up hope that he'll meet a compatible alpha, let alone his destined mate. He's fulfilled by his career, his poetry, his cat, and his friends.

When Jason Sabel, a much younger alpha, imprints on Vale in a shocking and public way, longings are ignited that can't be ignored. Fighting their strong sexual urges, Jason and Vale must agree to contract with each other before they can consummate their passion.

But for Vale, being with Jason means giving up his independence and placing his future in the hands of an untested alpha--as well as facing the scars of his own tumultuous past. He isn't sure it's worth it. But Jason isn't giving up his destined mate without a fight.

This is a stand alone gay romance novel, 118,000 words, with a strong happy ending, as well as a well-crafted, non-shifter omegaverse, with alphas, betas, omegas, male pregnancy, heat, and knotting. Content warning for pregnancy loss and aftermath.

Casper Gets a Wish by R Cooper
Summary:
Casper Silverbell is a grumpity elf, and with good reason. As an accountant at the North Pole, he gets no respect from most of the creative elves who don't see his job as important. The only joys in his life are his pet polar bears, his love of fine tailoring, and his monthly spats with the head of Gift Development.

Did he say joy? He meant to say annoyance. Dmitri Hollyberry is everything Casper resents about creative elves, wrapped up in one green-haired, tattooed package. Dmitri never gets his expense reports in on time, and seems to delight in making Casper lose his temper. He's also smart, talented, and just different enough from the other elves that Casper had once wished Dmitri would be the one to ease his loneliness. But obviously, that's impossible. No matter how good Casper is, that is one Christmas wish he doesn't expect to come true.

Original Review December 2018:
Another lovely holiday short story that was a pleasure to read.  Not really an enemies-to-lovers tale but Casper sees them as "near-enough enemies", he just has so much anger inside that he doesn't see what is right in front of him, or more accurately he refuses to let himself see what's there.  On Dmitri's end it is definitely not enemies but lets face it, there is only so much an elf can put up with before the door closes.  As to whether Casper actually gets his wish(and just what is that wish?) you'll have to read this little ditty for yourself but you won't be sorry.

I added Casper Gets His Wish to my kindle last year but somehow it slipped through the cracks and went unread but this year it was one of the first on my list and loved every minute of it.  I've said this often but it doesn't make it any less true, this one may be short on quantity but its long on quality.  A true holiday gem to add to my growing Christmas Reads shelf.

War's Mate by Taylor Rylan
Summary:
Honey Creek Den #1
Growing up in a coven with only one other shifter around doesn’t allow Arik much of an opportunity to find his mate, and he doesn’t know when or where he’ll find him. When dreams about his mate start interrupting his sleep, he’s content to wait for them to find each other. That is, until he dreams that his mate is in danger.

Alpha War has all but given up on ever finding his true mate. He’s looked for centuries, but so far, no luck. Then when his den starts being attacked by the local coven, all thoughts of finding his mate leave his mind. He only wants to protect his den members like any alpha would.

When an altercation with the coven turns deadly, the last thing War expects is for his mate to appear out of thin air, literally. Arik knew his mate was in trouble so he got his twin to teleport the two of them to the place he’d been dreaming about.

War is happy to have found his mate but can he accept a union with another coven? He already has enough witch problems; will a coven of warlocks be any different? But can he really say no to his fated mate? Is Arik willing to leave his peaceful coven for a den full of chaos?

With problems lurking, babies coming, and warlocks “poofing” in and out at odd times, will War and Arik ever find time alone for sexy times?

War’s Mate is 40,000 words and is book one in the Honey Creek Den Series. Each book contains a fated mate pair, Mpreg, lots and lots of knotting during growly sexy times, babies, no cheating, and a HEA. These bears will do anything their mates ask, just read and see. The Honey Creek Den Series is meant to be read in order even though each book focuses on a different couple. This book is intended for adults only as these shifters tend to get growly and don’t watch their language.

Moonlight by K Evan Coles
The weather grew colder as Ryen cleaned out the barn and the fiery colors in the fall foliage increased. Myles pestered him to use the generator, but Ryen opted for quiet over warmth most nights. He carried a thermos of tea on his trips to the barn and set up more camping lanterns to illuminate the space. During his breaks from sorting and hauling, he brought his cup to the door leading out to the barnyard and sipped the warm, sweet liquid while the wind stirred the night air.

The moon hung full and bright on the evening Ryen saw movement in the fir trees beyond the fence. He blinked at the figure who walked out of the woods and stood straighter, eyes on a slim man about his height. A part of Ryen’s brain knew he should be apprehensive—the farm’s nearest neighbor was over five miles away, and visitors always used the entrance from the main road. He felt only curiosity, though, and set his tea down on the table at his side.

The man moving toward him with measured steps was dark-haired and dressed in simple, black clothes. Sudden nerves curled in Ryen’s gut, and he picked up the lantern before he stepped outside. He crossed the yard, staring at the face on the other side of the fence.

The stranger’s features came together with a startling harmony, all big, liquid eyes and sharp bone structure, his skin washed out by the bright moonlight and the glow of the lantern in Ryen’s hand. Then he gave Ryen a smile, and the words Ryen planned to speak faded on his tongue.

“I did not expect to see anyone else out tonight.” A lyrical accent Ryen thought might be Middle Eastern sharpened the man’s syllables and lent a richness to his baritone voice.

“I … Same here,” Ryen managed. He silently hoped the moonlight concealed the color heating his cheeks. “I’ve never seen anyone out here at this hour. At least not on the other side of the fence.”

“I sometimes have trouble sleeping.” The stranger stepped forward and rested his hands on the top rail of the fence. His eyes moved over Ryen’s face before he smiled again. “I find that a long walk before bed can help. I do not usually walk this way, however. I decided to try a new route tonight.”

“And here you are.”

“Here I am.”

Ryen stepped closer to the fence without meaning to. “Do you live nearby?”

The man’s smile grew somehow shy. “Not really. But I wanted a long walk.”

“And that happens to you a lot? The trouble sleeping, I mean?” Ryen’s voice sounded hesitant to his own ears, but he moved another step closer. He was growing more accustomed to the stranger’s accent now, and the way it curled around the words he spoke.

“Quite often, unfortunately.”

The man stood just out of arm’s reach from Ryen, and the edges of the quiet world around them blurred as their gazes locked. The wind lost its chill, and the earth beneath Ryen’s feet and the barn behind his back faded. A feeling stirred in his chest, like a hum that slowly filled him.

“What’s your name?” Ryen asked.

A smile lit the stranger’s face. “I am Kamer.”

Kah-mer, Ryen repeated to himself, memorizing the elegant roll of the ‘r.’

“It is an old Turkish name,” Kamer said. “No doubt you have never heard it before.”

The mischief in his smile made Ryen chuckle. “Well, you’re right about that. I’m Ryen.”

“It is nice to meet you, Ryen.” Kamer glanced at the old barn and met Ryen’s gaze again. “Are you working out here by yourself?”

“Yes. My brother and his wife are back at our place.” Ryen gestured in the direction of the farmhouse. “I like coming out here after work so I can relax and clear my head.”

“You enjoy being alone?”

“I’m used to it, I guess.” His heart gave a little flip at the frown that crossed Kamer’s face. “I try to give them a little space when I can, and I promised my sister-in-law I’d clean the place up for a party. It’s full of all kinds of junk, so that’ll take me a few days, and I can kill two birds with one stone.”

“I see.” Kamer cocked his head. “So you would not mind if I passed by here again?”

“Not at all.” Ryen’s face went hot again. He hated sounding so goddamned eager, but Kamer merely nodded, his eyes kind.

The ping of Ryen’s phone in his pocket snapped the world back into place around them.

“It is growing late, you know.” Kamer said. “No doubt your family is wondering where you are.”

Ryen frowned. He actually had no clue what time it was. “It’s easy to lose track out here. I should probably get back. What about you?” he asked. “Can you find your way?”

“Of course.” An expression Ryen couldn’t read crossed Kamer’s face. “The moon is very bright tonight, and I have a flashlight in my pocket if I need it. I will not get lost.”

“All right then.”

Kamer raised a hand. “I will see you tomorrow, Ryen,” he said before he turned back toward the woods.

Callum wasn't completely unaware of where he was going. He recognized the place as the kind of pub Ainsley had showed him earlier. He wasn't sure how he was going to pay for his drinks but the thought of losing himself in alcohol was as big of enticement as his desire to erase his mind completely -- if there was any to erase.

Callum blinked his eyes, adjusting to the dim light inside. The place was quiet, practically empty. Perhaps it was still quite early. It wasn't unlike other pubs he frequented -- ha, he remembered that piece of information. The only thing keeping this one apart from the ones he knew was the slow moving thick water around him. Callum just hoped he wouldn't get sick like some time ago when he first shoveled food down into his stomach. He gazed straight at the bartender. Now what could he say to get a free drink ...

"Hello, gorgeous."

He looked up. A literal tall, dark, and handsome was looming over him. Callum wouldn't call himself short but compared to this man? He was a midget.

"What are you doing alone in this place, baby doll? Where is your, ah, partner?"

"What do you mean?"

The stranger waved his hand. "You know, that blond bastard?"

So he knew he'd been going about with Ainsley.

"Come on," the man said dismissively. "Two pretty creatures like you? You were both strolling around the town like the happiest couple in the realm, making everyone jealous."

Callum sputtered. "Jealous? We're not a couple and I'm not sure about the pretty creatures ..." Talking about pretty, he himself couldn't tear his gaze away from ... what was his name?

"Who are you?" Callum's voice was as weak as he was feeling at the moment.

The man closed the distance between them and Callum sniffed his cologne. It was a scent he'd never smelled before. It was a mix of their surroundings, like ocean breeze as well as the old woods, added with citrus aromas and a trace of musk underlying all of those. It was strong but not too overpoweringly so or suffocating. It was more like the flow of the ocean water, soothing and lulling, spellbinding.

"Is a name that important to you?"

Callum felt like he was coming back from a long slumber. He looked up from the man's strong, sculpted jaw, which sat at his eye level.

"Uh ..."

"What's yours, l'ange?"

It took a beat and Callum realized the man just called him angel in French. So they spoke French here, too, Callum mused. He wondered what other languages they spoke.

"Callum. Callum Saxon."

"Your name is as pretty as its owner." He practically purred.

"How about you?"

To Callum's surprise, the man withdrew a little to make a deep bow with one leg pulled back and a hand waving low.

"I am usually called Patrice Deniau. I believe that's my real name though it's been centuries and I honestly can't remember in which period of time I was named that."

Callum felt as if all the air in his lungs was sucked out. Centuries. Period of time. What was this man whose name sounded French, too -- Patrice Deniau? A vampire?

A shudder ran down his spine. Patrice did look like a vampire with his tall, slender figure, sharp chin, dark hair, and a pair of intense blue eyes that easily bewitched Callum.

"I, uh, it's a pleasure to meet you, Mr. Deniau."

"Mister?" Patrice's laughter was soft and lilting. "Unless you are to call me Sir or Master, Patrice will suffice." He stroked Callum's jaw with his long fingers.

Callum let out an involuntary moan. He knew he had to pull back, move away. But he couldn't. Instead, he leaned in and his eyes shuttered closed. He practically purred.

"Yes, all right, Patrice." It was Patrice for now. Later, he decided, he might change to Sir, even Master.

"Very well. Good Lord, you're so gorgeous. Has anyone told you that?"

"Oh, yeah, I guess." Amidst his foggy mind, Callum heard himself replying, not that he knew exactly what he had been asked.

"Really? Who was that, someone special?"

Callum nodded. "Yes."

"Someone you loved or someone who loved you?"

"Both. Love." Why past tense? "He still loves me."

"As you deserve, someone as captivating as you. May I know -- I believe it's that Carlisle boy? Ainsley?"

Ainsley. Callum's cheeks heated up as the name was mentioned. He'd definitely developed a certain infatuation with the man. But love? They had not even declared their feelings to each other. Declare, because Callum was certain their feelings were mutual. He shook his head slowly.

"No?" Patrice sounded surprised. "You've only been here for, what, two days, three days at the most. I can't believe you've been fooling around, let alone falling in love."

But of course he'd not been fooling around. He'd barely met other people aside from Ainsley and his mother. Yet it was neither of the two who he had on his mind.

Kevin Travers.

Callum blinked as a name suddenly flashed across his mind. He shook himself inwardly and took a deep breath. The name sounded familiar. It had to be familiar. Otherwise, why would it turn up out of the blue?

"What is it, my dear? You look ashen."

Callum was suddenly out of breath, near hyperventilating. "He was ... he is ..."

"Yes?" Patrice's hand crept up at the back of his head.

"I don't remember but ... but he was important to me. I just know it." Patrice stroked his scalp with knowing fingers and it was all Callum could do to stop himself from moaning.

"Is he still important now?"

Taylor Rylan
The Men of Crooked Bend Series is what started it all for me and it's seems I'm having a difficult time letting those men go! It was originally supposed to be a trilogy but it's up to nine books now and the tenth and final book is planned for June!

In it you leave Wild Creek and go to the little neighbor town of Sulfur Springs and meet the sexy men of the Sulfur Springs Fire Depart as well as quite a few US Marshals. You see some familiar faces but you also meet some very new ones. It's currently up to five books with at least three or two more planned.

I love to read, it's always been one of my favorite things to do since I can remember. When I started writing, I couldn't decide if I wanted to write contemporary or paranormal as I love both. I chose contemporary but still, paranormal was talking to me and those darn shifters kept saying, "tell our story, it'll be fun." So I did. And it was. That's how I started my Honey Creek Den series. Honey Creek is another totally fictitious town set on Flathead Lake (a real place) in Montana. I've never been there, but hope to get there at some point.

Honey Creek Den is up to five books, and the sixth and final book in that series will be released in April 2019. After, I'll pick back up with the Timber Valley Wolf Pack because everyone wants to meet Forest's brothers, right?

When I'm not busy writing about cowboys, architects, sheriffs, firefighters, US Marshals, bears, tigers, or warlocks (to name just a few), I like to read (who doesn't?). Because of my limited free time, I'm fond of short stories and novellas. I'm mom to three busy teenagers who are determined to be in every activity imaginable it seems. And a cat named Lucky that we're positive is an alien that was sent to spy on us.

After all, it’s been almost a decade since he’s taken a chance on someone again.

When a brutal ex almost kills Liam Campbell, he runs away with his best friend to Wyoming for Christmas with Rhett’s family. Little does he know, that even though he’s still broken and bruised, Liam’s life is about to be completely turned upside down when he meets Rhett’s brother, Jasper. But there’s no way Jasper could be interested in someone like him, right?

When Liam’s ex finds him in Wyoming and one of their family members almost pays the ultimate price, will the Welsh family forgive him for bringing danger to their family? Or will they fight for the battered young man and accept him with open arms?

Choices are made, and chances are taken when Jasper and Liam realize that their attraction for one another can’t be denied and must be explored. But with a wedding in the planning stages and an unforgettable bachelor party in Vegas, does the new couple really want to steal the grooms’ thunder?

My Choice, My Chance is the second book in the Men of Crooked Bend series. Each book in the series will focus on a different couple but will be better enjoyed as a series as the couples all make appearances in each book. Each book contains sexually explicit material between two men and is intended for adults over 18.

I finally made it to our new house with everything. I wanted to cry when I pulled into the driveway and saw Jasper’s truck there. How in the hell was I going to set everything up for my romantic picnic surprise if he was already there?

Admitting defeat and coming to the conclusion that tonight was not going to be the night to tell Jasper that I loved him, I got out of Baloo and walked up to the house to search for Jasper.

I was floored when I walked into the house. Jasper made a trail of lit candles. They started at the front door inviting me to continue inward. I followed the small flames, making my way to the living room. The sight before me made me gasp and start to cry. There, in the middle of the living room, surrounded by candles, and with a blanket and several pillows laid out on the floor was Jasper. It seems my man had the exact same idea as me! He obviously came straight here from the Realtor’s office instead of going to his office in Jackson like he’d told me.

I didn’t move at first. I noticed Jasper started to look uncomfortable so I slowly made my way toward him and the little picnic he had put together for us.

“Jasper, what…”

“Liam, just give me a minute here, alright?”

I had no idea what Jasper planned but I knew that there was absolutely no way I was going to let him go another night without telling him exactly how I felt. With as wonderful and sweet as this all was, this was my plan. Did I talk in my sleep? Nobody ever mentioned me talking in my sleep before so probably not. How was it that Jasper came up with the exact same idea as me? I took a big breath and did my best to calm myself and stepped into the room. I didn’t stop there. Nope! In true Liam fashion I walked right up to Jasper and hauled off and whacked him on the shoulder. Not the most romantic move ever.

“Liam! What the hell?”

“How dare you, Jasper!”

“How dare I what? You’re mad I try to be romantic for you? What? You want me to be an asshole or something?”

“No! I love it when you’re romantic. I love it when you plan trips and dinners and send me flowers and candy and stuff. It’s an amazing feeling knowing that you care enough about me to do all of those things for me.”

“Then why in the hell did you just hit me?”

“Because! You ruined my surprise!”

“How did I ruin your surprise? I haven’t even told you your surprise yet!”

We were both upset and started raising our voices, shouting at each other by that point. Not one of our best moments.

“What do you mean you haven’t given me my surprise yet? I had everything all planned and you beat me to it! I was going to come in and set up a romantic dinner for you, but you beat me to it, Jasper!" I was openly bawling by then. It was not a pretty sight. I know, I’ve seen me when I cried in the past. My face gets red and splotchy when I cry.

“Liam, I haven’t given you your surprise yet because the dinner isn’t your surprise. I wanted to give you a perfect romantic dinner so I could tell you just how much you mean to me.

Author Bio:
After several years of daydreaming about sexy men in her head, Taylor decided to finally start writing about them! That's where the Men of Crooked Bend came from, although at the time, she had no idea as to what she would name the town, nor what state it would be even be in. She quickly learned that even though she had ideas in her head, it was her characters that ultimately decided what would happen in each story. She goes into each adventure with a set plan but already knows that in the end, things will change and that her characters are going to get their way.

When she’s not writing about sexy men, she loves to read about them. Even if, her reading time has become less frequent since she started writing, she still tries to find time to read at least once a week.

She is a busy mom of three and one kitten named Lucky. If she’s not writing or reading about sexy men, she’s either running to some band function or another or is busy cheering from the stands at basketball games or marital arts functions.

Her Men of Crooked Bend Series is her first series but she already has two spin-off series planned!
