“Emily, I know that you’re out for blood but let’s face it, you don’t have the means to get a woman like Charlette Delacroix,” Shane informed me as I placed around my complex, trying to figure out how I would pay that bitch back for trying to kill me.

She obviously believed that offing me would get her Julien but she was sadly mistaken. The look on his face when I told him that Charlette had been the one who attacked me at the club was one I would never forget. He was furious. Unfortunately his expression soon changed to one of brokenness when I ended my relationship with him.

It was the hardest thing I had ever been forced to do. I felt like I had no choice. The woman was clearly desperate and would stop at nothing to get Julien to leave me for her. I needed her to believe she had won, to believe that she had successfully caused our demise. But in order to do that I had to hurt the man I loved so desperately. I had to allow him to feel broken yet again and the idea that I caused him such hurt pained me to the core but it was the only way. I needed to find a way to get Charlette out of our lives once and for all.

“You think I don’t know that Shane? Do you really think it hasn’t crossed my mind that I am dealing with sick twisted fuck that will stop at nothing to take Julien away from me? His fucking wife!” I growled in his general direction as I continued my pacing. I needed a plan.

“Well will you at least sit down and eat something. You’ve only been out of the hospital for ten hours and you really should be resting,” he said as he closed the short distance between us before drawing me up his is arms in an attempt to offer comfort.

The resemblance between the brothers was remarkable and in that moment, I gasped at the sudden closeness and felt my stomach churn at the realization that Julien wouldn’t be able to touch me like this until after Charlette was taken care off.

Pushing away from Shane I signed and sat on the couch, allowing my head to fall into my hands. My decision to let Julien go at the hospital seemed rational at the time but the more I thought about it the more I wondered just what I was thinking. Shane was right. I had no way of really removing his ex-wife from our lives. Current wife, not ex?

Tears welded up in my eyes in an instant as the severity of the situation crashed down on me with its full force. I was no position to take on Charlette.

Shane once again closed the distance between us before kneeling down in front of me, “Look, I know you are determined to make this woman pay. To be honest, I’d like to see the old bat pay myself but you are in way over your head,” he began before lifting my face with his hand to meet his gaze. “My bother loves you Emily, together you can stop Charlette. But if you insist on going after her I will help you. Fuck, I have money to blow and damn-it I can’t stand to see a woman cry. Especially since my brother would likely kill me if I allowed you to get into danger. So what do you say?”

What do I say? Did he really have to ask?

“Fuck yeah!” I screamed as I jumped into his arms, no doubt squeezing the life out of him.

“Whoa, whoa. Slow down killer, we still need a plan. Between your fucking determination and my pockets, Charlette should be out of your life soon and my brother will be happy again.”

I didn’t let up on his neck, instead I squeezed tighter grateful that I had called him to get me out of the hospital since my friends weren’t speaking to me. Truth be told… I wanted to be close to Julien and Shane was the closest thing I had to him.

“Thank you so much Shane, you have no idea how much this means to me,” I hiccupped into his neck, my grip no less tighter than before.

“I am a lover at heart. Shit I’m French remember?” he chuckled softly.

How could I ever forget? I thought to myself.

#1:
“Bogart!” I yelled, frantically circling and trying to locate the direction of his cries. “Bogart…Heeere!” Catching a glimpse of movement to my right I ran toward the commotion.
An eighty pound black and brown Boxer flew through the air in my direction. Ears cutting through the wind, his eyes looked crazed and his jowls flapped as he cried out in fear. The cause of his flight … an eight hundred pound Moose who was pissed off and raising cane. Or in this case raising Bogart with her nose. He landed on his feet — like a colt trying to stand for the first time — legs splitting, chest smacking the earthen floor.
None of that stopped his feet from moving. Bogart was back in the race of his life as the irate cow charged after him.
“Oh, crap.” My stomach dropped as I realized she wasn't done with her assault, and I was the much larger target as Bogart led her straight to me. I turned and ran, with Bogart hot on my heels. The sound of the cow's breath filled my head. The distance closed between us. Zigzagging through the trees, I couldn't outrun her. Nor could I out-maneuver her. I just hoped she’d get tired and realized we weren't a threat.
Unfortunately, she didn't feel the same way.

#2:
A whimper at the back door ruined the moment. I debated whether to check on the stray creature looking for a handout, but oblivion called my name.
The whimper got louder. Persisted and permeated my wall of defense.
Sinking into a black hole had my name on it, and if I got up, my husband … well, he would chide me for being a softy. I smiled and pulled my feet out of the covers. The cool wood planks of the loft chilled my toes as the whine turned into a howl. Oblivion would definitely have to wait.

#3:
Heat raced to my face, threatening to take over my entire body despite the chill that still ran through me, I quickly apologized. “I’m sorry, I wasn’t sure if I dreamed it or not.” Then I quickly asked, "How did you find my house?"
He stared, returning the perusal I’d so blatantly delivered, as he stepped forward and set the oversized coffee mug on the nightstand. The silence stretched between us and my grip tightened around the corners of the sheet as I yanked at the bottom swath exposing my legs up to my thighs.
He backed up toward the doorway, a safe distance away. "Your dog. I believed you called him Mr. Bogart?" his eyebrow lifted quizzically and I nodded. "He led me here."
"Where are my clothes?" I blurted out.
"I couldn't carry you and them. I had to leave them at the bridge."

#4:
We ran along the stream in the opposite direction from where I’d gone for a swim a couple hours earlier. Bogart’s nose up in the air, he headed toward the railroad tracks a short distance from the bridge. Out of breath, I suddenly knew time wasn’t on our side, and I no longer wanted to follow Bogart. The woods were quiet, almost somber in their silence. The creek’s voice whispered in my ear and I knew something was wrong.
So wrong, the peaceful calm of the forest shuddered.
Bogart came to a halt, and my pace slowed with foreboding. “Come on boy,” I whispered, “let’s go home.”
He lay down and whimpered. Big round head between his paws, he cried with despair as he peered back at me and then looked toward something on the other side of the railroad tracks.
My hand fisted around the carved groom, the cut of his jaw jabbing at my palm as I clung to Jacob’s jacket. Slowly I approached Bogart and followed his gaze.
My faith in the man who had been my customer the day before was restored. He had been good, honest and decent. But now he resembled my clothing on the bridge, a twisted mangled mass on the opposite side of the tracks.

Author Bio:
Three career paths resonated for Kym during her early childhood: a detective, an investigative reporter, and…a nun. Being a nun, however, dropped by the wayside when she became aware of boys—they were the spice of life she couldn't deny.

In high school her path was forged when she took her first job at a dry cleaners and met every cop in town, especially the lone female police officer in patrol. From that point on there was no stopping Kym’s pursuit of a career in law enforcement—even if she had to duct tape rolls of coins to her waist to meet the weight requirements to be hired.

Kym followed her dream and became a detective that fulfilled her desire to be an investigative reporter, with one extra perk—a badge. Promoted to sergeant Kym spent the majority of her career in SVU. She retired from the job reluctantly when her husband drug her kicking and screaming to another state, but writing continued to call her name, at least in her head.

Harry DeVeaux, paranormal investigator comes highly recommended to do the job and against Deanna’s better judgment, she hires him.

Although Deanna thinks Harry’s crazy for believing in ghosts and Harry thinks Deanna has a closed mind to the possibilities of ghosts and they highly annoy each other, sparks fly. Deanna can’t help but fantasize about Harry and inspired by a romance convention visiting her hotel, writes her fantasies in a private blog that Harry finds, hacks, and reads. Ooh la la!

#1 -- (all ages)
It would also be a shame to let a private hotel room go to waste when it contained such a beautiful sexy woman, so he moved closer and leaned against the wall beside her, letting his breath tickle her neck as he gazed down at her. He lifted a strand of her silky hair and let it sift through his fingers. Her heady scent wafted up to him, making him want to bury himself in her. Was it cherries? Maybe apple blossoms? “My heart almost gave out when your car went up in flames and I saw you thrown back. I was afraid you’d been hurt…or worse.”
Her breath caught audibly, and she worried her lower lip with her small, perfect teeth for a moment. Then she gazed up at him with sorrowful eyes. “It must have reminded you of losing your wife.”
“Not for a minute. I was worried you were hurt. That I’d lose you.” He traced the line of her jaw with the pad of his thumb and shivered when he felt her tremble. So she wasn’t immune to him. Good. Very good.
Her lashes fluttered and her irises grew dark. She shrank against the wall as if unsure what to do next. Then resolution gathered in her eyes. “Oh! Well, uh, I should go. I’m sure I’ve been missed. A manager never rests.” To his dismay, she ducked under his arm and escaped to the door. When she tried to turn the handle, however, it wouldn’t budge. Then she tried to turn the knob with both hands, pulling hard. Her eyes flashed fire. “What the hell? Can you help me? I can’t get out.”
“Do you really have to go? Or do you just want to get away from me? Am I that repellant?”
She looked as if she’d rather have fire ants crawl up her legs than answer his question.
Before she could respond, he jumped in. “I have a confession.”
She stopped trying to jar the door and her attention riveted on him, her forehead puckering. “Did you do something I need to know about?”
Drawing in a long, shuddering breath, he look heavenwards and crossed his fingers behind his back hoping she wouldn’t throw something at him, hoping she’d be okay with his admission. “I found your blog and read it.”
Paling, the blood fled from her flesh and her eyes looked like sooty coals against her face. Her gaze clashed with his and held. “How did you find it? I used a pseudonym and I put it on privacy settings.”
He screwed up his lips, and scrubbed his hand over his face, preparing to tell more painful truths. “I’m a bit of a hacker and I like to research the people I’m working with.” Not sure she’d be receptive to his theory, he left out the part that he thought the ghosts led him to her sight. He thought they were closet romantics. He wouldn’t be surprised if they’d locked them into the room now to force them into some alone time together.
When a tsunami of emotions flitted across her face he tried to read them. Fury. Embarrassment. Lust?
“You investigated me? You read my private musings?”
“You wrote about me? In some very intimate ways. At least I presume it was me since you used my name.” He fixed her with a piercing gaze. “Did you?”

#2 -- 18+
A pregnant pause rent the air as she veiled her eyes from his view. Finally, she smoothed her skirt against her legs and admitted, “Yes. I have very mixed feelings about you. You make me crazy the way we argue, the way you believe in ghosts, and yet I find myself thinking about you, fantasizing about you.”
Taking heart in the last part even if he wasn’t sure he liked the first, he said with a lopsided grin, “You fantasize about me much?”
As if she suddenly got bold, she sidled up to him with a mischievous twinkle in her eyes and ran the tip of her finger down his chest. “Aren’t my blogs proof? The question is, do you fantasize about me?”
He wanted to scoop her into his arms and haul her into that king size bed right now and have his wicked way. The sooner they lost every stitch of their clothing, the better. Luckily, he’d started packing protection since reading her blogs as he’d been thinking about ravishing her, not that he thought he’d ever get the chance. I am right now.” He lowered his chin, smiled lasciviously, and crooked his finger at her. “Come here, baby.”
“I can’t believe this is real,” she said huskily. Yet she started to move toward him.
She glided so seamlessly she seemed to float. When she was within touching distance, he drew her into the circle of his arms, bent his mouth and captured her lips. He teased her with his tongue, seeking entrance to her mouth. He rocked against her, molding her curvy body to his. She was so warm, so soft, he wanted to lose himself in her. Against her lips he murmured, “I’m usually the one you accuse of believing in fantasy. Are we switching places?”
“Um. Maybe. Crazy isn’t it?” She kissed him back languidly at first, then with more fervor. She curled her arms around his neck and let her fingers play in the hair at the nape of his neck.
While her hands went north, his traveled south. His palms slipped from her waist to her buttocks, cupping them. Then he crushed her to him, yearning to be one with her. “Absolutely insane.”
“We shouldn’t be doing this.” But she didn’t try to draw away, didn’t stop rubbing against him, inciting him.
“Yes we should.” Her nipples budded against him and she quaked. Her flesh was heated and she couldn’t stop kissing him. If those weren’t signs she wanted him, nothing was.
He returned her kisses and let his hands roam her body. Eager to feel her naked flesh against his, he pulled her uniform top out of her skirt. When she didn’t protest, he lifted it over her head and tossed it onto the chair. Her breasts were barely contained in her wispy, lacy red bra, the large milky mounds trying to spill out.
Unable to help himself, he bent his head and buried his face in her cleavage. He shoved one side off her aureole and laved her burgeoning nipple with his tongue. When she moaned and craned back her head to give him better access, he reached around and unsnapped her bra and whisked it away across the room. She writhed against him and he cupped her other breast in his hand.
Breathlessly, she asked, “What did you think of my fantasy?”
“It made me really hot. I say on your next day off we go to Miami to that nude beach and make out.”

Sweetwater by Lisa Henry

Summary:
Wyoming Territory, 1870.

Elijah Carter is afflicted. Most of the townsfolk of South Pass City treat him as a simpleton because he’s deaf, but that’s not his only problem. Something in Elijah runs contrary to nature and to God. Something that Elijah desperately tries to keep hidden.

Harlan Crane, owner of the Empire saloon, knows Elijah for what he is—and for all the ungodly things he wants. But Crane isn’t the only one. Grady Mullins desires Elijah too, but unlike Crane, he refuses to push the kid.

When violence shatters Elijah’s world, he is caught between two very different men and two devastating urges: revenge, and despair. In a boomtown teetering on the edge of a bust, Elijah must face what it means to be a man in control of his own destiny, and choose a course that might end his life . . . or truly begin it for the very first time.

I wept for Elijah and his inner monologue had me warring between wanting to hug him and shake him.  His lack of self worth broke my heart, if only Elijah believed what Dr. Carter would tell him instead of what the likes of Harlan Crane or his boss, Dawson would shout at him.  The story is so well written that even if you're not a fan of westerns you'll enjoy this one.  Then you throw in Grady Mullins to the mix and this story suddenly has everything.  This truly is a story of the good, the bad, and the ugly.  Sweetwater is the first thing by Lisa Henry that I've read but it won't be the last.
