The Fixer Upper by Anne Conley

Title: The Fixer Upper
Author: Anne Conley
Genre: Contemporary Romance
Release Date: February 23, 2015
Cover Artist: Samantha Holt
Summary:
James is a has-been restaurateur from the UK, trying desperately to get himself out of the hole he’s dug for himself, while trying to figure out how to suddenly be a Dad for his brand-new tween-ager.   He thinks he’s fixing things, or at least he’s making a mortgage payment, when he takes a job on a dating show as the Fixer Upper.

Margaret’s life is perfect.  At least, that’s what she keeps telling herself.  A recent divorcee, she can’t believe she’s turned into a clichΓ©.  When she makes a deal with her ever-helpful mother who will stop fixing her up with men, if Margaret will go on a dating show, she thinks she’s solved one of her problems.

What happens when the womanizing TV host meets the classy lady with OCD tendencies?  Can they find what they need in each other?

James watched as she picked up her onion sword and dipped it into her mouth, extracting one and swirling it around her mouth before taking a drink.  He sipped on his scotch, churning it around his mouth and letting it cleanse him as it went down his throat, bloomed in his chest, and spread through his stomach.  He relished the burn.
The bartender came over to wash some glasses near them, and after catching James’s eye, lowered to whisper to him, “Are you her decoy?”
     “What do you mean?”
“She’s in here almost every night, beating men off, explaining why she doesn’t need to actually have a boyfriend to not be interested.  I was just wondering if you were pretending to be her boyfriend, so she wouldn’t get hit on.  I’ve been tempted to offer myself.”
“No, I’m not pretending to be her boyfriend.”  James couldn’t hold back the grin at the image of Margaret fighting off potential admirers.
“Are you really her boyfriend?”  The poor man’s eyes were huge with disbelief, and James could completely understand.  She did put off the cold fish vibe, but he ached to change that.
“I can hear you two idiots,” Margaret hissed at them.  Turning on the poor boy, “You are no longer my favorite.  Where’s Marcy?  She’s almost as good at my martini as you are.”
“Sorry.  She’s not in tonight, you’re stuck with me.”  He grinned at her boyishly, and James watched her blush.  Was she flirting with the bartender?  He left to go help someone at the end of the bar, and James turned to her.
“You like him, huh?  Is he the one you want to take to dinner?”  Her lucky date for tonight would get dinner out on the show.
     “No!  He’s a child!”
“That’s right.  That pesky age thing.”
Before he could elaborate, a sharp-dressed CEO type walked up to Margaret on her other side.  The man exuded money, from his Armani to his Rolex.  James watched with interest.
“Hey there sweet thing.  Can I buy you another?”
James felt a prickle of jealousy and again questioned himself.  He had no claims on her, in fact, he was here to help her get a date, in spite of what the producers said.  Even so, he cheered inside his head when her mouth shaped the word no, before snapping shut.  When she re-thought her response, his unease returned.
“Sure, why not?”  Her voice was blithe, but James saw the underlying tension and resignation to the simple statement, like she knew exactly what was going to happen next, and dreaded it, participating only to please the show.
As soon as the bartender brought another drink for the two, the man bent down close to Margaret’s ear.  James didn’t hear all of it, but he managed to see red darken his Maggie’s chest and knew exactly what that meant, he’d done it to her himself.  Before he could react, she’d thrown her drink in the CEO’s face, who took it all with aplomb.
Removing his handkerchief from his breast pocket, the man wiped his face before smirking and leaving.  No more words were spoken.
“What the hell did he say to you?”
Angry tears sounded in her voice, and sudden understanding dawned on him.  Men were fucking pigs.  “He told me to come back to his place so he could stick his dick in my hot, wet, cu—“
“Never mind.  Forget I asked.”  Her eyes shined at him, as if tears were just under the surface, and James wondered if it was always like this for beautiful women with no self-esteem.  Margaret knew she was pretty, but didn’t give herself enough credit for the rest.  That’s why she kept her standards so high, so she didn’t get hurt.  And the men who came on to her were total assholes.  James knew she’d only allowed the wanker to buy her drink because he’d told her to lower her standards.  If she kept up with her normal routine, that man wouldn’t have stood there more than thirty seconds.
James held out his arms, trying to be comforting, and to his surprise, Margaret sort of slumped towards him.  He took a step forward and enfolded her in his arms.  It was similar to last night’s embrace, except she wasn’t trying to beat him senseless.  Instead, she was just… limp.
Stroking her back, feeling her warmth through the thin material of her dress, he inhaled the scent of her shampoo, lavender and vanilla.  Scents that should remind him of his gram, only on Maggie, they made him want her naked.
He was such a fucking tool, no different from the others.
She relaxed in his embrace, her own arms coming around his waist and squeezing him, pressing herself against him.  Something welled up inside, something a little foreign, something that surprised him.  He realized he cared for her, and not just enough to sleep with her.  James cared for Margaret enough to want to know what happened to them after the sex.
“We should just go.  I’m hopeless.”  She sniffed into his chest, and he could barely hear her.  “I’ve thrown my drink at one guy, and I’m hugging on you.  Nobody’s going to want to go out with me now.”
“I do.”  His words shocked him, but no less for the meaning behind him.  He did want to take her out.  He wanted to make her feel desired, undo all his words of yesterday and the day before.   He regretted them, immensely, and didn’t know what to do to take them back.
She looked up at him, her brow furrowed with confusion, but didn’t take a step back.  Still holding her with one arm, he reached his other to smooth the wrinkles on her forehead, and shrugged, murmuring, “Masochistic tendencies.”
Her lips curled into a smile, and she laughed.  He’d never heard the clear tinkling sound resonating from her before, and suddenly he lost all of his senses.  Something changed in both of them.  As abruptly as she started laughing, she stopped, and James watched as her gaze focused on his lips.  Maggie’s tongue snaked out and stroked her bottom lip, leaving it sparkling wet, preparing it for him.  James was lost.  He wasn’t sure if she raised herself, or if he lowered his face, but in the next second, their lips were on each other’s.

1. What is the biggest influence/interest that brought you to this genre?
I have to say the Outlander series… While the enormity and complexities of the series intimidated the heck out of me, the love story was inspirational to me.  When the Indie Publishing revolution came, I went for it.  I’ll never be Diana Gibaldon, but I can tell a story.  And that’s what I set out to do.

2. When writing a book, what is your favorite part of the creative process(outline, plot, character names, editing, etc)?
I like the preliminary thought process the best.  At that point, the characters and plot still do what I want it to do.  When I start outlining and roughing it out, things have to fit together a certain way and I lose a little of the whimsy of my initial thoughts.  But it ends up being a better story for it, I just like the freedom that happens when I initially come up with the story—sort of a sparky thing.

3. When reading a book, what genre do you find most interesting/intriguing?
I like all types of romance.  I prefer happy endings, but will read others.  I really feel cheated with cliff-hangers, though.  It’s like I’ve invested all this time and emotion into the characters only to not have a resolution.  I want the best for the hero/heroine.

4. If you could co-author with any author, past or present, who would you choose?
I would love to write a book with Vanessa Booke.  I really like her and her writing.  She’s an amazing lady, seriously amazing.

5. Have you always wanted to write or did it come to you ΚΊlater in lifeΚΊ?
I’ve always wanted to write, and have written my entire life.  It was later in life, though, that I realized it was something I could actually do.

Author Bio:

18+
“I asked if you’d like to get out of here. I live right around the corner.”
“Sure,” I knew this was coming, and while Evelyn was a beautiful woman, she wasn’t who I was really interested in. Seeing as whom I wanted to take home didn’t want to go home with me, I decide to take her up on her offer. I put two one hundred dollar bills down on the bar with my card before I stand to help Evelyn. I catch Laken’s eye as I tip my head in her direction. While Evelyn may not be who I wanted to bring home tonight, she is a beautiful blonde woman with one hell of a body. I would use it to my advantage.
Walking out of the bar with Evelyn on my arm, I can’t help but turn back for one more glance. Perhaps I am a masochist, because the look in that woman’s eyes behind the bar could knock me to my knees. I don’t care how unaffected she tries to look, because in those brown eyes I saw it—Desire. I walk Evelyn to her apartment above the city center, trying to be as polite as can be. Seeing her ass sway in that damn dress though is really tantalizing me. Once she sticks her key into that lock, it’s going to be on.
     “Would you like some coffee?”
“No, I’d prefer something else,” I whisper into her neck as I kiss the back of it. She shivers and I know I have her in the palm of my hand.
     “Like?”
“Like… your sweet little pussy on my tongue,” I growl into her ear before grabbing her key from her. I push my raging cock against her as I slide the metal into the lock. When she gasps in front of me, I hastily turn the lock before pushing the door open.
“Well, I’m sure we can make that happen,” she says as she turns to face me. My hands instantly grab her face, pulling her by her cheeks to my lips. I take from her mouth greedily, claiming every inch of it. She may not know it yet, but for tonight she is mine for the taking. She will be devoured and she will love every second of it. I close the door with my foot as my tongue battles with hers, the taste of sweet alcohol on her lips. She whimpers into my mouth and I know for sure she is mine for the taking.
“I am going to make you scream,” I breathe out as I pull away, searching her eyes for any clue that she doesn’t want me like I want her.
“Please,” she replies breathlessly against my lips. With that one word I pick her up, placing her on the nearest piece of furniture I can find, which is the couch. She laughs as I slowly slide my hands up her creamy thighs, reaching under her dress and pull the lace fabric down her legs. I can smell her arousal in the air as I slide her dress up to her hipbones, looking at her bare pussy.
I lick my lips as I see her juices shining in the dim light of the room. I put my lips together and blow softly on her quivering lips which makes her shiver. I let out a chuckle as I slide my hands up her thighs to hold her down onto the couch. I slide my tongue up the length or her slit, up to the little bud that is sticking out of her clit. “Fuck, you taste good.”
I am rewarded with a few mewls out of her mouth as my tongue starts to devour her. I slide my tongue up and down the wet sensitive folds of her pussy as I watch her digging her nails into the couch. I trail my eyes over her body as she slowly pulls the dress over her head, arching her back to remove the bra confining her perky tits. Reaching up with my hands, I cup her breasts, squeezing gently as my tongue penetrates her slit. I kneed her flesh with my fingers as I continue to assault her sweet tasting pussy. My eyes watching her as she comes undone underneath me. I love this feeling—the rush I get as a woman loses all inhibition and lets her emotions take control. It’s as if nothing matters but the pleasure they seek, and I love every fucking second.
Looking Evelyn in the eyes, I slowly slide my right hand down her slender stomach. I watch her face as my tongue finds her sensitive bud and my finger slides into her dripping channel. I watch as her hooded eyes open in surprise, and then retreat to closing again. I flick my tongue as my finger creates a friction inside of her, one that will have her coming undone for me in mere seconds. Her hands find their way into my hair just as she starts to orgasm all over my tongue. I lap at the juices as if I am a man starved, not knowing when his next meal will come.
“Asher,” she moans as her fingernails dig into my head, pulling me closer to her sweet juices. I don’t argue as my finger continues to stroke her sensitive flesh, my tongue lapping at all of the wetness seeping underneath my finger. After she loosens her grip on my head, I slowly rise to my feet. She gives me a lazy smile as she lies before me—a goddess sitting there in the light of the room.      Leaning forward, she reaches for my belt. She untucks my shirt before pulling my belt away from my body. The hunger in her eyes is all I need to know. She wants this as badly as I want to give it to her.
Pulling my pants down, she stares as my hard cock comes into view. She gapes at me, I suppose in awe of my length. I just smile as I grab her blonde hair in my hands. I pull her open mouth down onto my girth and moan as her wet tongue slides over me. I can’t help but wish that it were Laken here with me. I shake the thought from my head; if she had wanted me, she’d have been the one here tonight. Evelyn was the woman who was lucky enough to share my pleasure tonight, and I would make damn sure she enjoyed every bit of it. I continue to thrust my hips into her face, shoving my cock down her throat. I look into her blue eyes and notice, for the first time, the hint of violet around her irises. Perhaps Evelyn can be more than a one-night stand for me. After all, she is fairly talented with her mouth. I feel my balls starting to tingle, so I pull my dick out of her mouth.
“Turn over, Evelyn,” I huskily add before I kick off my shoes and kick my feet out of my pants. She doesn’t object at all, but does as I ask. Turning her body around, she places her arms on the back of her couch. How she knows this is the position I want her in is not lost on me. “Stick your ass out a bit more, baby,” I hiss into her ear as I reach down into my wallet, grabbing a condom.
“You don’t need to use that, I’m on the pill… and I’m clean,” she hesitates a moment. In that moment I know she knows exactly who I am.
“I never not use one,” I retort as I slide the latex over my hard shaft.
     “Your loss.”
“Indeed,” I grit out as I grab her hips. Slamming my dick into her, she jerks and lets out a loud yelp. She knew someone who I’d fucked before, and she was trying to trap me. I wasn’t an idiot. I didn’t make my fortune by being an idiot. I had learned to read people long before, and if she wanted to trap me so she could get something from me, I’d make sure she’d remember tonight. She’d beg for me to fuck her again, but like all the others, it wouldn’t happen. I pull my hand back and then bring it down to her ass. The smack that resides in the room is just another turn on for me, especially when it is accompanied by a surprised howl from the one receiving it. “Like that, Evelyn?”
“Don’t stop,” she moans out as my hips slam into her ass over and over. I watch as she reaches between her legs rubbing her clit, getting closer to orgasm. I debate on whether or not I should take my pleasure and keep her begging for her own, but I decide it isn’t worth it. I continue to thrust my hips into her backside as I feel the sensation in my balls. I pump harder, slamming into her as deeply as I can get. I feel her muscles start to tighten and relax, knowing she is fixing to be cumming at any moment. I pick up my pace, and just as I hear my name escape her lips, my release goes off into the shield of my condom.
I smile to myself as I see her head hit the couch cushion, her strength depleted from the escapade.        “Feel good?”
“Very much so,” she says through a yawn. “Best sex ever.” Her eyelids start to fall as I reach for my pants, then they quickly shoot back open. “Where are you going?”
“Home.” “You aren’t going to stay the night?”
“I don’t stay the night,” I reply calmly.
“You stayed with Lana,” she slaps a hand over her face.
“I knew it,” I hiss out. “Lana lied to you. Be glad you got to orgasm. I wasn’t going to let you. Thanks for scratching my itch, Evelyn,” I growl out as I finish putting on my clothes.
“Asher, are you serious right now?”
     “I am always serious.”
“I bet this has to do with that girl at Jasper’s. You kept eyeing her all night.”
“Evelyn, this has nothing to do with that girl. I don’t even know her, but I am sure she wouldn’t be whining like I child if she’d been able to fuck me,” I growl out. There is no reason for Laken to be brought into this all because she’s being a child about ruining the fact that she knows who I am.
“Whatever… Just go,” she mutters as she grabs the blanket on the back of her couch, covering herself.
“I planned on it. Nice meeting you, Evelyn,” I say with a cocky grin before grabbing my tie and walk to her door. “Come lock this door,” I say before I shut the door and make my way to the busy streets of Birmingham.

Shopping for a Billionaire’s FiancΓ©e by Julia Kent

Title: Shopping for a Billionaire’s Fiancee
Author: Julia Kent
Series: Shopping for a Billionaire #6
Genres: Comedy, New Adult, Romance
Release Date: February 26, 2015
Summary:
All of our best dates end up in the emergency room….

I planned the perfect proposal. Plenty of lobster, caviar, champagne and–her favorite–tiramisu. The perfect setting. The perfect woman. The perfect everything.

Dad gave me my late mother’s engagement ring, platinum and diamonds galore. Shannon wouldn’t care if I slid a giant hard-candy ring on her finger instead of a three-carat diamond designed to impress. But my future mother-in-law, Marie, will pass out when she sets eyes on that rock, which will give us two minutes of blessed silence. That woman talks more than Kim Kardashian flashes her naked backside on the internet.

I was going to make it perfect, from the color of the tablecloth to the freshness of the roses. And it was perfect.

Until Shannon swallowed the ring.

* * *

Shopping for a Billionaire’s FiancΓ©e gives near-billionaire Declan McCormick the chance to tell his story in this continuation of the New York Times and USA Today bestselling Shopping for a Billionaire series.

Shannon has no idea how many layers of beauty she has. And that’s exactly why she’s so exquisite.
When I was sixteen, the year before my mother died, Mom took me and my little brother, Andrew, to New York City for a long weekend. Pulled us out of school over the objections of the headmaster at our academy. Mom didn’t care. We spent three nights at the Waldorf Astoria, skated at Rockefeller Center, had the best seats at the top Broadway musicals, and dined on the finest footlongs you could get for $3. Loaded with mustard and sauerkraut, plus a cream soda or two.
(Do you have something against footlongs? Too bad. Two teenagers can only handle so much caviar and lobster.)
What I remember most about that trip, and what Shannon reminds me of every moment I look at her, was our trip to the Museum of Modern Art. Mom insisted we go, and Andrew and I rolled our eyes like sets of dice at a craps table.
     And then.
And then I got it, right there in front of a Vincent van Gogh masterpiece. In art history class we’d covered this painting in detail. We were taught the biography of Van Gogh, how he came to create the series of paintings, his motivation, and his flaws. We’d dissected the meaning so thoroughly that I felt like I could recreate the art by automation, our elite prep-school instruction clinical and impeccable.
Standing in front of the painting, a few feet away, with my eyes trailing the curve of brush strokes, my mind taking in the nuance of color, my senses dazzled by the sheer essence of the whole, I halted.      Froze. Was completely in the painting’s spell.
You can study something in the abstract. Know it’s real somewhere out there in the world, and understand intellectually that what you read in a book or what you’re told by someone else is true.
You have to stand in front of it and have it stare back at you, though, to really know it.
That’s how I feel when I look at Shannon. Every single time my eyes find her. Shannon’s smile is warm and sweet, yet better every time she flashes it at me. Her honey-colored hair shines in the sunlight but looks richer when it’s tangled, in bed, highlighted by the moon and messed by me. Those warm eyes see only me when we’re together. That luscious body craves my touch. My hands. My...all of it.
When I’m with her, the world is more nuanced. Deeper. Authentic. Real.
She’s a work of art, one of a kind. And one I get to hold next to my body, tuck away in my heart, and...grow old with.
I have planned the perfect proposal. No footlongs and sauerkraut, unfortunately, but plenty of lobster, caviar, champagne and—her favorite—tiramisu. (What is it with women and tiramisu? It’s cream, cheese, sugar, cake and rum, not some magic potion that generates mouth orgasms. My Y chromosome scratches its head in confusion, but hey, if it’s her favorite...I give my woman what she wants.)
Dad gave me Mom’s engagement ring, platinum and diamonds galore, a monstrosity he’d bought for her nearly four decades ago as his business took off. The ring is designed to impress. I doubt Shannon would care if I slid a giant hard-candy ring on her finger instead of a three-carat diamond.
And, frankly, I don’t care, either. But the thought of my Shannon sharing such an important part of my mother’s life makes my chest swell. Only Shannon—and my mom—can do that. Only love can do that.
Plus, Marie will pass out when she sets eyes on that rock, and that will give us two minutes of blessed silence. That woman talks more than Kim Kardashian flashes her naked ass on the internet.
“It’s not as if your brothers are planning to tie themselves down to one woman any time soon, if ever,” Dad had said when he gave it to me. He’s about as sentimental as a pet rock. After having it resized to fit my future fiancΓ©e, it was ready to rest on yet another McCormick woman’s finger.
It was going to be calculatedly perfect, down to the color of the tablecloth and the freshness of the roses.
     And it was perfect.
     Until Shannon swallowed the ring.

9. When she invited you to the yoga class she taught and encouraged the old ladies to pinch your ass.
8. When she talked about her sex life.
7. When she talked about her sex life.
6. When she talked about her sex toys.
5. Where was I? I just bleached my brain....
4. The time she stormed into your father’s corporate offices and yelled at him for blaming you for your mom’s death. And then your future-father-in-law showed up. And then your dad and future father-in-law got into a brawl worthy of WWF Wrestling.
3. When she brought Shannon’s pet cat, Chuckles, to the mall when you were playing Santa and made the cat wear reindeer antlers.
2. That time she brought a camera crew to Shannon’s apartment and barged in on you making love, cameras rolling.
1. Come to think about it...every waking moment around her.

Q: Why a mystery shopper and a billionaire? Isn’t that an odd combination?
A: Yes! And that’s the point: you don’t think about someone who mystery shops for a living finding herself dating a high-powered billionaire. Most mystery shoppers go into stores and do customer service evaluations (in secret!) to make a little money and get free stuff. Billionaires are the opposite: their time is more valuable than anything else. It seemed like a neat combination, and one that would give me some great material to work with.

Q: Shannon struggles in the first book (Shopping for a Billionaire) with her feelings for her ex-boyfriend, Steve. Declan is full-on attracted to her, and has no problem putting Steve in his place when they meet. Why didn’t Shannon just dump Steve right away?
A: Shannon’s ex does NOT appear in Shopping for a Billionaire’s Fiancee (though he will appear in future books...spoiler!) because it took 670 pages in the first book to deal with that! Shannon is a deeply loyal person, but at the beginnning of the series she’s also insecure. She’s trying to figure out who she is in relation to other people -- and what she wants out of life. Navigating that road can be tough, but she does it so well. She admire’s how Declan just knows what he wants, and gets it.
At the same time, Declan really treasures the fact that Shannon is a deep feelers. She isn’t shallow like so many women he’s dated.

Q: You’ve turned a cat into a character. Chuckles the Cat is, um...evil personified. Tell us about Chuckles.
A: To be fair, we meet Chuckles in Shopping for  Billionaire when Shannon is petting him and her mother appears suddenly in the apartment. Shannon turns the poor cat into a weapon, flinging him at her mom. I’d plan mayhem and destruction is someone did that to me. :)
When I write Chuckles I imagine an evil little frustrated man is trapped inside him. Poor cat. Shannon’s mom makes him wear reindeer costumes for Christmas pictures, for goodness sake!
But Chuckles LOVES Declan. He’s a kindred spirit.

Q: Declan does the classic “slip the ring in a glass of Champagne” proposal, but...
A: It goes horribly wrong. The ring never ends up in the Champagne, but it -- whoops! SPOILER. Can’t tell the rest. Let’s just say Declan turns out to make mistakes, too. And he pays dearly for them.

Q: You used a lot of Twitter jokes in your Shopping for a Billionaire series. Will we see more Tweets in this book?
A: A few. Jessica Coffin (Steve’s girlfriend and Shannon’s nemesis) makes a brief reappearance that involves a particularly gross hashtag involving poor Shannon’s ring debacle.

Q: Are there more books planned in this series?
A: Oh, yes. Writing one as we speak. :)

Tough-girl Teal Lofton has struggled all of her adult life, from her weight to the color of her skin holding her back in work and love. When she agrees to be the maid of honor in her friend’s wedding, a hormonal bride and a jerk of a best man who she is strangely, yet wildly, attracted to, amplify those struggles.

As tensions and tempers rise, Trent disappears with the wedding rings and Teal braves a snowstorm to bring them back, determined to fix yet another problem. But a tragic accident brings together the unlikely pair, forcing them to face the prejudices of their pasts. In doing so, Trent and Teal embark on an inevitable course of self-discovery and passion like they’ve never experienced before—until a secret from Trent’s past threatens to destroy it all.

She gave him a half smirk. “Why you, of course. You are the reason I came out here in the first place.” Damn if she didn’t wish she wasn’t lying on the floor, but so close to the fire had made her shivers slow down considerably, allowing her to form full sentences.
He scoffed. “Of course you would! I didn’t ask you to come the fuck out here. You crashed into the truck, not me.” Trent threw his hands in the air. “Shit, if you don’t want me to check you, I won’t.      But if you bleed to death internally, don’t fucking blame me.” He stood and lumbered away while she fumbled with her one good hand to get the pillow and strap from around her neck.
Reason told Teal to be grateful for what he and the two strangers had done for her, but the other part—the part she wasn’t so proud of—wanted to slam it in his face that this whole scenario was his fault.
After removing the crap from around her neck, she took a moment to catch her breath. Her body ached all over and she wanted to ask Trent for those pain pills, but first she needed to assess her situation.
Teal fought to just sit up. Feeling her body for broken bones, she realized she really had no clue what to look for. What did a broken bone feel like other than pain? She covertly glanced up at Trent and spied him eyeing her with a disinterested look on his face. Well, fuck you too, dickwad.
When her hand made it to her knee she winced. She pulled the dress up to see it was swollen and turning purple. It would be impossible to get up and look for ice. “Shit,” she whispered. As much as she didn’t like it, she had a choice.
She could sit there, silently stewing in pain and wait for the neighbors to come back, or she could ask Trent for help after she’d already pushed him away. Holding her swelling wrist she leaned her head back, supporting it against the wall and closed her eyes. She considered herself capable and strong, but each person had a breaking point and hers was fast approaching.
Taking deep, calming breaths pacified her a bit and reassured her that nothing was broken, at least not in her chest. A cold sensation made her jump and when she opened her eyes, Trent’s hand placed a towel filled with snow on her knee. She hadn’t even heard him go outside.
“Thanks,” she choked out as he stood and walked away. Teal gathered the towel and gently held it to her knee. Trent walked back to his spot and leaned against the wall. “When are those two people coming back?” she questioned.
“Why?” he asked sharply. “You don’t trust me to take care of you?” His arms folded over his massive chest and that frown she hated graced his lips.
“No, I don’t,” she hissed. “I don’t know you and from what I hear, you aren’t too fond of people like me, so excuse me if I want to make sure I get proper help until real help arrives and not this shit you are doing.” She pointed to him, meaning the fact that he was all the way on the other side of the room.
Trent let loose a bark of laughter. “Yeah, well out there you couldn’t let go of my fucking hand. If you want, I can pick your ass up and place you right next door with Lee and Dana. I got this cabin to stay away from people, not bunk with them. And I definitely don’t need your shit.”
She called his bluff or at least she hoped it was a bluff. “Fine, take me over there.” She lifted her arms like a child who wanted to be picked up. “Since my presence offends you so damned much that you have to stay on the other side of the fucking room, then please, by all means, do yourself a favor and get rid of me!”
When he moved forward, Teal braced herself. If that man so much as tried to pick her up, she would use her good hand to ring his balls right off his body. Trent side-stepped her swatting hand and scooped her up.
“So much for worrying if I had a neck injury!” she yelped. Okay, so maybe it wouldn’t be so bad to stay on the floor with him on the other side of the room. Teal wouldn’t admit her regret. If Trent dumped her out in the snow, so be it. I am not about to—
The thought died in her head when he sat her gently on the bed.
“You don’t have a neck injury. Looks like your wrist is sprained and your knee is bruised maybe worse. Since I can’t check you for anything else, I’ll just assume your fine. If you die, I’ll tell Logan it was by your choice.” He picked the covers up from the floor and cleaned the mess that was her previous spot. “Logan would skin me alive if I left you to that couple. Though I am more than tempted to do it.”
He glanced back at Teal and at that moment she took stock of his face. There was swelling from Logan’s fist, but now he had scratches on his face along with a bruised cheek. What the hell had happened out there and why did he look as bad as she did when she was the one who’d crashed?
She stopped adjusting herself on the bed and raised a brow. “I’m supposed to believe you care about Logan’s opinion? You don’t even care that he loves the woman he is about to marry. You tried to ruin his happiness. What kind of friend does that?” Her lip curled in satisfaction when he frowned.
“She’s a liar,” he said, as if it were common knowledge.
“Watch what the fuck you say about her,” Teal warned. She was in no position to warn him about shit, but that didn’t stop her. There was no way this guy was going to talk shit about her friend.
He raised his hands in mock defense yet his lips held a devilish smirk. “Hey, I’m just callin’ it like I see it. She got knocked up and then didn’t tell him about it. Omission of the truth is a lie, do you not agree?”
Okay, well he had her there. She had a good ass comeback too, but it wasn’t Teal’s place to tell him Katie’s reasons for anything. “Whatever, man. I’m not going to argue about something you know nothing about.” Teal leaned back on the bed and closed her eyes to ignore Trent’s smirk and the growing aches in her body.
Fine, he thought he had her. But it seemed she knew more about what was going on between Katie and Logan than Trent did. She guessed that made sense since Trent was so against this union in the first place.
Teal wondered if Katie’s race was the only reason Trent didn’t want to see the two married. She thought back to the words Trent could have used, the words he must have used before if he was a racist, but he hadn’t used any derogatory terms since he’d arrived. It was clear there was more going on with this man then she first thought, and Teal was a bit intrigued.
“That’s normally how it works with you guys.”
She cracked a lid to see him still on the opposite side of the room as her. “You mean black people.” There was no inflection to her voice. She hadn’t meant it as a question.
“Fuck no.” Her eyes opened at that and watched as he spoke. “I mean women. Y’all wait until we are makin’ sense and then you say ‘whatever’ when you know we’re right.”
She didn’t know what to say about that so she didn’t say anything, knowing he’d take it as an admission of guilt. Teal’s pain pushed her to ask for the meds. “What are those pills that lady left?”
Trent looked over to the table. “Percocet. You need some?” Teal nodded. “I need to set that sprain,” he added, heading to the sink and pouring a glass of water. “Is it okay if I touch her royal highness?”
She rolled her eyes at his statement. Taking the pills when he handed them to her, she was about to put them to her mouth when she paused. “I can’t take these without eating something first. You got crackers or anything?”
Before she’d finished, Trent strode to the counter and grabbed a bag of chips. “These work?” he asked, shoving the bag at her.
“Yeah.” She took them and ate a few.
Trent grabbed his coat and shrugged it on as she finished chewing. After carefully reading the bottle, she opened it, poured one into her hand, and popped it into her mouth.
“Where are you going?” she probed just as his hand touched the door knob. He froze, as if caught in the act.
“I’m going to thank Dana and Lee and give them their stuff back.”
She eyed his other hand, spotting the covers and sheets. Teal couldn’t quite figure Trent out. One second he was rude and insulting and the next he was helpful and polite. He eyed her with an inscrutable gaze before opening the door and exiting. Teal glanced around the small cabin. Everything was tidy and neat, except where she’d been placed.
The cabin was more like a room with a bathroom. Teal couldn’t see herself staying here much longer. Clean and neat be damned, the door to the bathroom was missing. She’d be holding it for as long as it took. A half wall shot up from the floor, hiding the toilet she spied when Trent had carried her to the bed. Behind a smaller wall, sat a shower.
Teal sighed. “This is my hell,” she muttered, laying back completely on the bed as she closed her eyes. The medicine was taking hold and making her tired. Now that she was just about sure she wasn’t bleeding internally or suffering from a massive head wound, rest seemed less daunting. Actually, it seemed necessary as her eyes closed and she started to drift.

Chapter 1
It was the last day of senior year and Trent walked past the guidance counselor’s office, eying the line of poor souls who wouldn’t make it to graduation. A few faces he recognized, but many he didn’t.
Tomorrow was not only his graduation ceremony, but also his eighteen birthday. Trent’s mind raced with the possibilities of being an adult and never having to attend another day of school. His stepfather had promised him the day he turned eighteen, he was putting Trent out. “Can’t have two men in this house. Only one man and I’m gonna be that man, not you, boy.” Trent didn’t give a shit. He turned the corner and headed for his last class of the day.
He’d already been promised a job at Sam’s garage, so he wouldn’t have to worry over making a steady income. Sam was a lazy drunk, but that only added fuel to his fire. Besides his new job, Trent had also lined up a place to stay, and was now the proud new owner of a fixed-up junker he’d gotten from the Pick ‘N Pull junkyard. He was set.
Adding a cherry to the top of this perfect day, his girlfriend, Harper, said she had a present for him. She’d been really secretive about it, but Trent prayed to all the gods in existence she was finally willing to give it up to him. She’d really made him work for it, and he was more than ready to finally slide home.
Their relationship had been secret since day one, but Harper promised to tell her dad about them as soon as she turned seventeen—only five months from now. Trent couldn’t wait. He’d been so shocked a year ago when Harper had approached him in the school parking lot and asked for a ride home.
There was a hierarchy at Lincoln and Trent sat proudly at the bottom with the stoners. He was even below the theatre/band geeks. Harper, however, belonged to the upper echelon. Her daddy was rich and she was beautiful.
That day, Harper could have asked anyone for a ride home, yet she’d purposely side-stepped a jock and a group of rich kids and walked right up to Trent. Her dark hair had flittered about her round dark face as she asked if the car he was leaning on was his. When he’d nodded, her dark eyes moved past him and eyed the car skeptically. She’d then asked if it was safe to be on the road, and Trent had proudly proclaimed he’d been the one to fix it up.
Her laughter at his words had sounded so sweet and innocent, he’d found himself lost in it. She’d shrugged and moved around the car, pulling open the passenger side door. Trent had watched as made herself comfortable on the seat, crossing one dark leg over the other, and placing her satchel on the floor. Instead of questioning her actions, he’d gotten in the car and started it up. When he asked her where she was going, she’d said, “Wherever you hang out after school,” so nonchalantly that Trent just drove off without thinking.
Now they’d been secretly dating for just over a year. No one, not even his best friend, knew about their relationship. Speaking of his best friend, Trent glanced around the class for Shawn, but he hadn’t arrived yet. Taking his usual seat in the back, he placed his book on the floor.
Not thirty seconds later, Shawn came lumbering into the classroom with his girl at his side. The redhead moved from under his arm to sit with her friends at the front of the class, and Trent was glad for that shit. It wasn’t as cool to have a secret girlfriend your senior year as one would think it would be. His friends ragged on him calling him a queer, but they were just joking and Trent knew it. Before Harper, Trent had dated quite a few girls and he’d slept with plenty more, but his junior year he was not ten minutes out of a relationship with Amber Hagen when Harper had scooped him up.
“Hey, man. You heading over to Scully’s after school?” Shawn folded his tall frame into the small chair. His girl, Trent couldn’t guess her name if he tried, looked back and Shawn blew her a kiss that set her into a fit of giggles. At the noise, her friend looked back casting Trent a coy smile.
He looked away and to Shawn whose blue eyes were trained on him. “Nah, I got to go to Sam’s and pay him back for loaning me the money for my cap and gown.” At Shawn’s silence, Trent continued. “Maybe after that, but I sure Sam’s going to make me pay it off by staying and helping him rebuild that transmission.” Trent ran his hand threw his hair hoping that Shawn didn’t ask him to come over after. He and Harper had plans, well she’d made plans for him at midnight and he would just go wherever she told him to go.
Shawn nodded. If he were upset about the blow off, he didn’t show it. “Cool, man. Start the grown up shit now. I get it,” Shawn leaned back in his chair and propped his feet up on the empty chair in front of him. “But not me.” His carefree smirk made Trent laugh.
     Oh, yeah?” Trent asked.
Shawn turned slightly to face Trent. “Nah, man. I plan to go out with a bang and when I say bang, I man banging a lot of chicks!” his friend stuck out his tongue and thrust his hips up and down. Trent’s laugh turned into a scoff as Shawn’s bellowing laughter brought unwanted attention to them. Trent knew that Shawn was signing up for the Air Force during the summer and Trent couldn’t blame him for wanting to relax and let loose a little before he became property of the United States government. Trent wondered if the only way out of this town for people like Shawn and him was through the military. While Trent was going to graduate, he’d waited too long to get his act together so his GPA had suffered, but he’d still managed to squeak by with enough credits graduate.
“Your dad forcing you to sign up, or you finally realizing it’s the only thing your dumbass is good for?” Trent asked.
Shawn gave a mirthless laugh. “Well, listen to this shit. I said to him, ‘Dad, how’s about I forgo the military and head to college instead?’”
“And?” Trent prompted at his silence.
     His smile faded. “Let’s just say . . . I’m signing up.”
Shawn dropped his feet when the teacher entered the class and commanded attention. Shawn was smart as hell and had tutored Trent a time or two in Math. He confided in Trent that he wanted to be a teacher, but the money for college wasn’t there. His father had given him two choices: join the military or join the military. Trent assumed the choice was made for him years ago, but that wasn’t Trent’s problem. His stepfather couldn’t care less what Trent did after college so long as he did it out of his house.

I quit! Self-Publishing Sucks!
Easy steps to make sure you never utter those words!
So, are you wondering why someone would say those words? Shout em, scream em or even growl em? Do you think Amanda Hocking or Samantha Young ever screamed those words in the middle of the night while they slaved over HTML formatting, Smashwords Vetter errors or Createspace error messages? Or do you think it was, ‘Like taking candy from a baby’?
Well, for me it had its ups and down and times where I wanted to either go the traditional route or keeping writing as a hobby. I made a list that may help you going forward in writing. I think it’s always nice to offer advice because I had to learn some of these lessons the hard way.

Top 5 “Do’s
1. Finish your book.
Let’s start with the first part, finish your book. Though that seems like a given, I had some people tell me that I should send in a half-finished manuscript to an editor.  Apparently, that’s a major no-no to some professional editors.  If you want help along the way the best option is to acquire some good beta readers. A beta reader is someone who is interested in the book you are writing or books in general, this person should be someone whose opinion and analytical skills you trust, who reads the manuscript for you in order to help you find flow and consistency errors. I got that advice from a fellow indie when I told him that someone offered to beta-read my book for $150, I have also learned that most betas offer their service for free.

2. Choose the right editor.
There are different editors for different edit jobs and trust me, the reader can tell if you didn't choose the right one and they will rip you to shreds in the review because of this. Luckily, I didn't suffer that fate and hired RA Publishing to edit my novel. It was pricey, but worth it.
Developmental Editing
Substantive Editing
Copyediting
Proofreading

3. Hire a professional to do a professional’s job.
Seriously, I understand the cost of self-publishing can be outright ridiculous, but there are some things that are better left to the professionals. Like: Editing and Web Design. Granted, there are a few of us out there that are can do all of these things alone, but if you can’t please look into hiring a professional. Most custom cover wills cost you about $150, but some premades are as cheap as $40!! I tried to create my own cover and all I learned from that experience was that Photoshop hated me and was designed to make me look like a fool. Good job Photoshop!

4. Get an assistant
If you can afford one. They are actually a great help!

5. Don’t take bad reviews personal
Yea, it’s a Don’t in my list of Do’s, but it’s very important to understand that not everyone I going to love your book. Keep writing and enjoy it!!

Welcome, tell us a little more about yourself?
A. My name is Kristen Anne Inger Iversen and I’m from Virginia Beach. My day job is at a chainsaw factory! It’s sounds like hard work, but it’s actually rather easy and fun.

Did you always wanted to be a writer? If not what did you want to be?
A. I’ve always enjoyed writing, but when I was younger I wanted to be a veterinarian!

When did you first consider yourself a “writer”?
A. It took FOREVER for me to actually change my job to Author.

Who is your publisher? Or do you self-publish?
A. My publisher is CHBB, Crushing Hearts and Black Butterfly. I LOVE this company! I also self-publish.

How long does it usually take you to write a book, from the original idea to finishing writing it?
A. I’ve been writing for a couple years now, so I’ve gotten faster. It takes about four to five months for me to finish the novel. Then you add a month of editing and proofreading and I can finish a book in five to six months.

What can we expect from you in the future?  ie More books of the same genre? Books of a different genre?
A. YES! I have a new Adult Contemporary Romance I am working on soon! I can’t wait to release it.

Do you have a certain routine you have for writing? ie You listen to music, sit in a certain chair?
A. Normally when I write, I get my laptop and go outside with my headphones. The most comfy place is in my bed, but when I’m there, my cat always jumps on my laptop for nap.

What genre of books do you enjoy reading?
A. I love paranormal romance, but lately, I’ve been reading a bunch of contemporary romances.
Next on my TBR list is The Chronicles of Young Dmitry Medlov: Volume 6

If you could travel back in time here on earth to any place or time. Where would you go and why?
A. I wouldn’t travel to the past. The past is where it belongs in the past, but I would LOVE to visit the future!

Do you have any advice for anyone that would like to be an author?
A. Very simple: Never give up. Don’t listen to the haters. Keep writing.

Which format of book do you prefer, eBook, hardback, or paperback?
A. Of course paperback, but e-books are more affordable these days.

What is your favorite book and Why?  Have you read it more than once?
A. I have a few, but I choose Kissed by an Angel by Elizabeth Chandler.

Do you think books transfer to movies well? Which is you favorite/worst book to movie transfer?
A. Sure they do, but I am more of a Marvel fan than a books to movie girl. I have to admit I loved Mocking Jay the movie!
