Sunday's Safe Word Shelf: Tales from the Edge by LM Somerton Part 2

The Edge is a training company with a difference. Its weekend clients come for classes in bondage and domination, not team building and problem solving.

The management, staff and customers of The Edge do not lead boring lives. In fact they have a habit of getting themselves into all kinds of trouble. Put Dominant, possessive alpha males together with bratty, loveable submissives and sparks are bound to fly. These Tales from The Edge are their stories.

Driven to the Edge #7
Summary:
Not all limits can be negotiated.

The Edge is reaching a major milestone. After ten years in business together, Doms Joe Dexter and Heath Anders are planning a celebration and new beginnings. But even the best-laid plans can be thrown off course.

When Olly, Joe’s beloved sub, gets caught up in a hostage situation involving Special Forces soldiers, PTSD and blood diamonds, a party is the last thing on Joe’s mind. He hates the lack of control, and the thought of losing Olly takes him close to the edge.

Joe is not the only one reassessing his priorities. Olly needs Joe’s strength more than ever. He feels safe only in Joe’s arms or in his bondage.

Can Joe and Olly find sanctuary in each other or will their latest adventure drive them apart?

Reader Advisory: This book contains a hostage situation and scenes of violence.

Binding the Edges #8(Coming January 10, 2017)
Summary:
Never let go of the one you love.

After recent traumatic events, Olly is finding it hard to get his head around what happened. While he tries to deal with a maelstrom of emotions, renovations at The Edge are in full flow, alongside preparations for tenth anniversary celebrations. Joe, his Dom, recognises Olly’s delicate state of mind and does his best to reassure him. A trip to the New Forest with their friends, Aiden and Heath, helps the healing process.

Returning home, Olly and Aiden focus on preparations for the party. When Aiden is called away, Olly takes a walk to clear his head, keeping his eye on a brewing storm. To his horror, he discovers Mark Vickery, an old enemy, has landed on the island by boat and is out for revenge.

With Olly missing and the storm raging, Joe, Heath and Aiden set out on a rescue mission that unfolds in a way none of them expected. Can the storm wash away the past or will Olly and Joe’s future be destroyed by a twist of fate?

Driven to the Edge #7
Olly threw himself onto the battered couch in the nurses’ break room with a dramatic sigh. Challenged by his momentum, the ancient springs groaned and creaked beneath him. He bounced a couple of times before settling in place.

“Lord, my cute little butt needs better support than this heap of firewood can provide.” He swung his legs up onto the cushions. “It’s been one long-assed day.” He wriggled his toes inside his sparkly purple sneakers. “Why do you suppose the Americans call these things sneakers? Do you think they were designed for tiptoeing off to clandestine booty-calls?”

“Are you addressing that question to me, Nurse Lane, or are you talking to yourself again?”

Olly pulled himself up and peered over the back of the couch. “Well, I thought I was conversing with my biggest fan, i.e. me. Oh, hey, Rex, I didn’t even notice you lurking there. Did you get lost on your way to the doctors’ lounge? And why do you guys have a posh lounge when we only have a break room? Doesn’t seem fair, considering everyone knows we nurses do all the work around here.”

“The coffee in here is less toxic and you always have chocolate biscuits. My chances of finding anything edible in our break room are slim to none because surgeons absorb sugar from fifty feet away. The tin is perpetually empty.” He stirred the contents of his chipped mug with vigor. “Can I make you one?”

“Only if you want me to worship at your feet.” Olly hoped his drooling wasn’t too obvious.

“My ego could deal with that. Not sure your Joe would approve, though.”

Olly groaned. “Does Joe send out memos or something? I swear every staff member at this hospital is under instructions to keep an eye on me and send in reports. Joe doesn’t even work here and he knows more people than I do.”

Rex handed him a mug. “He does know everyone. And everyone knows you… Even the ones you haven’t met.”

Olly inhaled the scent of freshly brewed coffee. “I haven’t had a cup of this all day. That has to be some kind of endurance record. Gimme a biscuit. Oh, and you earned some brownie points for not denying nurses do all the work.”

Rex shoved Olly’s legs off the sofa and took a seat next to him. He planted the biscuit tin between them. “Don’t snaffle all the bourbons. I have a medical degree. I know better than to say anything that might piss off a nurse—even you.”

“If there are jammy dodgers left, your bourbons are safe.” Olly rooted in the tin. “Woohoo! There’s one.” He and Rex shared a high five. Olly dunked his biscuit in his coffee then consumed it in two bites. “Oh, God…so good. Sugar and caffeine in one hit. I’m in heaven. All I need now is a foot massage and I can die happy.” He toed off his sneakers to reveal rainbow-striped socks.

“You can get that from someone other than me.” Rex hauled himself out of the sofa’s amorous clutches. “I have my limits. Gotta get back before one of the ward sisters notices I’m AWOL.”

“Good luck with that, they have spies everywhere.”

Rex grunted. “Ain’t that the truth? When are you back on shift?”

“Tomorrow afternoon. I’m working from two till ten. At least I get a nice, long lie-in.” He closed his eyes and drifted into a daydream involving Joe, a flogger and multiple orgasms.

“If you were a dog, I swear your back leg would be twitching right now.”

“Fuck off, Rex.” Olly didn’t bother to open his eyes—it was too much like hard work. He wouldn’t normally have spoken to a doctor that way, but he was off shift and that meant anyone was fair game. He flicked his fingers in a gesture that could only be interpreted as dismissal.

“Cheeky brat.” Rex sounded fond of Olly rather than annoyed with him. His words were followed by the thud of the door closing.

“I get called that a lot,” Olly murmured.

He was in danger of falling asleep. His grip on the coffee mug slackened but, as it tipped, he came back to full alertness. There was no way he was going to lose a single precious drop of his illicit caffeine hit. Of course, he would have to confess to Joe when he got home. He wasn’t supposed to have coffee without permission, but at the end of a long, difficult shift his willpower was non-existent. He giggled. Punishment followed by Joe pounding him through the mattress would be a great way to end the day.

After sneaking another biscuit, a bourbon this time, Olly levered himself up. He shoved his tired feet back into his sneakers, then tied the laces in a double bow. He intended to shower at home, so he pulled on his black Edge sweatshirt over his lurid pink scrubs. He had several more brightly colored sets that he’d bought himself back in his wardrobe. He couldn’t abide the dull green ones the hospital issued—the color did not go with his hair. He also washed them himself. The hospital laundry made everything smell the same and Olly preferred the scent of lemons to carbolic.

The knowledge that he was heading home always put an extra spring in Olly’s step, even after a tiring day. He took his usual shortcut down the rear fire escape to the staff car park. He wasn’t supposed to do it, but it cut a full six and a half minutes off the prescribed exit route via reception. He always waved at the security camera to annoy the guards in the monitor room. In his opinion they were too grumpy and he felt it was his duty to cheer up their day.

Even from a distance and through the damp haze of a Yorkshire afternoon, his car was easy to spot. In the massed ranks of gray, black and white vehicles there was an occasional daub of red but only one bright yellow burst of sunshine. Though he had access to The Edge’s company vehicles, Olly’s heart was firmly given to Fifi, his sweet little Fiat. He had saved hard to buy the diminutive car, which now sported faux fur cushions in a garish shade of tangerine and a plush Minion toy hanging from the rearview mirror. Only a couple of years old, Fifi had air conditioning for the two weeks of summer when it was needed and a sound system powerful enough to entertain half the county. Best of all was the heated driver’s seat, which warmed Olly’s ass almost as well as a spanking from Joe.

When he reached his car, Olly paused as he always did, to take in the view. The building housing Bourton Military Hospital and Convalescent Facility had once been an imposing stately home—one of the grandest houses in North Yorkshire. Its position on a bluff, rolling moorland, at its foot, had been of strategic importance during many a historical conflict. Olly could easily picture roundheads and cavaliers ranging across the moors, engaged in battle. Well, actually, he could picture being held captive by an evil roundhead general, then being liberated by a dashing, long-haired hero in a feathered hat and the resultant kinky celebrations. He had no particular reason for making Cromwell’s troops the bad guys other than the royalists dressed better.

Though Bourton had been extended with the addition of modern wings, the development had been kept to the rear of the building, so its front aspect remained much as it had been in Elizabethan times when the first stones had been laid. In the early evening with the fiery hues of the setting sun reflecting from thousands of tiny panes of glass in the leaded windows, it was a spectacular sight. It always made Olly smile, and that evening was no exception. No matter how emotionally exhausting his day had been, Bourton at sunset was one big happy pill.

He clambered into Fifi, turned on the ignition and selected appropriate tunes for the thirty-minute drive to the coast. Duran Duran’s Wild Boys blasted out of the speakers. Olly added his slightly out of tune voice to Simon Le Bon’s in a loud duet and pulled out of his space. By the time he got home he would have worked his way through Hungry Like the Wolf, Rio and Girls on Film at least three times. With the setting sun at his back, he headed across moorland scattered with the gold and mauve of gorse and heather. Ahead of him, storm clouds bruised the sky black and purple. Olly frowned.

Hope I get back before that deluge arrives.

He pressed the accelerator a bit harder, urging Fifi on through a strangled rendition of Hold Back the Rain.

The musical magic worked because, as Olly approached the causeway linking the mainland to the island where he lived, it was still dry. He heaved a sigh of relief. Driving across the narrow road in the rain wasn’t fun. Between the sea mist and spray beating up from the tires it was a case of aim and pray he didn’t steer off the edge. He checked nobody was coming in the other direction before starting out. If Aiden and Heath had plans for the evening, Aiden had a tendency to drive like a Formula One wannabe. The way was clear, so Olly pointed Fifi at the island and covered the final part of his journey.

The Edge, his partner Joe’s company, was housed in a rambling old building that had once been the estate of an eccentric billionaire. Now it played host to elite training courses for various clandestine parts of the security forces. That was the aspect the public saw. Interspersed with survival skills and espionage 101, The Edge also offered classes aimed at participants in the BDSM scene. Joe and his business partner Heath were both lifestyle Doms. They had set up The Edge almost ten years earlier, turning it into a thriving and well-respected business.

Olly smacked his lips together. Thinking about Joe made him drool, gave him a guaranteed erection and sent shivers down the length of his spine. He parked Fifi between two of The Edge’s logo-adorned four-wheel drives, then jumped out. He gave the little Fiat a pat before heading inside.

The entrance hall was grand and rather intimidating on first viewing, but to Olly it was warm, welcoming and smelled of home. A fire crackled in the enormous open fireplace, taking the chill from the air. A massive patterned rug covered two-thirds of the floor and there was a scattering of cozy armchairs for people waiting for appointments. Low tables held a range of newspapers and magazines. There was no reception area, but Joe and Heath had offices on opposite sides of the hall. If neither of them was around, a brass bell summoned whoever was on meet-and-greet duty.

Heath’s door was closed. Olly guessed he and Aiden were having some pre-dinner alone time, which probably involved Aiden bent over Heath’s desk. Aiden was Heath’s sub, and Olly’s best friend and partner in crime. Olly smiled when he saw Joe’s door was open a crack, soft light spilling around the edges. He gave the heavy oak a soft tap.

“Come in, Olly.” Joe’s voice always had an edge of command, even in giving the most mundane instructions.

Olly shivered. He pushed the door open and walked into Joe’s office.

“Close the door behind you, please.” Joe glanced up from whatever he was working on. He gave Olly an appraising look.

Olly clasped his hands behind his back, fidgeting from foot to foot.

“How did you know it was me, Sir?”

“Other than the fact you were due back from work about now?” Joe quirked an eyebrow. “Heath never knocks if the door is open, he barges straight in. Aiden knocks, then stomps around outside until he’s invited in. That young man has no patience. At this time of the evening it’s unlikely to be anyone else.” He stood, then pushed his chair back.

Olly, keeping his hands behind his back, sank to his knees. He ducked his head, unwilling to meet Joe’s icy blue gaze. Joe walked around his desk. He perched on its edge.

“Hmm. I suspect you’ve been disobedient, Oliver. How many mugs of coffee did you have today?”

Olly’s face heated. “One, Sir.”

“Do you think mumbling your confession makes any difference?”

“No, Sir.” Olly widened his eyes and tried his most appealing expression. “I ate two biscuits as well, but one was a jammy dodger and you know I can’t resist those. There are never any left in the tin in the nurses’ break room, but this evening there was one, buried under the boring digestives. I couldn’t leave it there, could I? Then I got a serious sugar craving. I think my willpower is getting stronger because I only had one more and it was a bourbon so it doesn’t really count.”

“Sugar and caffeine.”

It was a reprimand disguised as a statement.

“Yes, Sir.” Olly nibbled his lower lip. Anticipation built, a slow burn centered in his balls. The urge to fidget was strong, especially with stimulants rushing through his blood.

“Stand up. Grip the edge of the desk.”

Joe moved to one side, making room for Olly. Olly rose with as much grace as his trembling legs would allow. He stood, legs apart, about a foot from the desk, and leaned forward to rest his hands on the edge. The familiarity of the position sent him halfway to subspace. That and the absolute certainty Joe would punish him. He’d broken Joe’s rules and Joe was reassuringly consistent when it came to consequences. It was one of the many reasons Olly loved him so much.

He sighed when Joe stroked his ass. He wished the touch was against bare skin rather than through the polyester of his scrubs, but it was a start. He wiggled, hoping for more.

“Be still, brat.”

Joe slipped his fingers beneath the elasticated waist of Olly’s pink polyester trousers. He pulled them down so the fabric rested below the curve of his butt.

“Pristine. All my marks have faded. We should do something to remedy that, don’t you think?”

“Yes please, Sir.”

Binding the Edges #8
Olly surveyed the bombsite that had once been his and Joe’s bedroom. There was a certain satisfaction in seeing his entire wardrobe strewn across the bed and over every inch of the floor.

“I have absolutely no idea what to pack.” He stuck out his lower lip and stood, hands on hips, waiting for inspiration to strike.

“We’re only going to be away for two nights, how hard can it be?” Aiden reclined on the bed, partly covered by a collection of brightly colored T-shirts.

“Oh, it can be very hard, believe me.” Olly twitched his nose and smirked.

Aiden groaned. “There’s an image I need to bleach from my brain.”

“You left yourself wide open,” Olly said. “That’s not like you.” He scratched at his arm. “Christ, these stitches are driving me insane.”

“I’m tired,” Aiden said. “My brain’s not working. And if you don’t stop messing with that cut, Joe will lock your hands into bondage mittens.”

Olly gulped. “There’s a pair of those around here somewhere. I hate them. They make my hands all sweaty and I don’t like it when I can’t touch Joe. I should hide them.”

“If Joe can’t find them, he’ll know you are responsible and when he asks you where they are you’ll have to tell him the truth.”

“Then I’ll be in even more trouble.” Olly sighed. “Being a submissive involves far too many ethical decisions for my liking. Why are you tired?”

“Because I didn’t get enough sleep last night.”

Olly gave his friend a more detailed examination. There were dark shadows beneath Aiden’s eyes but he didn’t seem tense or unhappy. “Tell me all the juicy details. What did Heath do to you? Come on, spill! I’m your best friend in the whole wide world and therefore entitled to know about every kinky facet of your love life.” Olly gave Aiden a stubborn stare. “Besides, it beats making packing decisions.”

“Oh, I’m so glad that my private life is more titillating than your underwear choices.”

“Well…” Olly considered that for a few seconds. Underwear selection for a mini-break with Joe was a very serious matter. “It’s a close call, but my natural curiosity needs satisfying.”

Aiden grunted. “More like rabid nosiness.”

Olly clambered onto the bed, shoving clothing out of the way as he went. He sat cross-legged and stared Aiden down. “You have to tell me now. It would be cruel not to. I would have to report you to the RSPCS.”

Aiden squinted at him and raised an eyebrow.

“Royal Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Subs. It’s a thing.”

“You’ve met Heath,” Aiden responded. “I should have an honorary membership.”

“What did your big bad Dom do now? Tell Olly. I’ll kiss it better.”

“You will not!”

Aiden’s indignant exclamation had Olly dissolving in a fit of giggles. “Well, that gives me a clue as to which part of your anatomy is involved. How about we play the yes no game?”

“What are you talking about, Olly?”

“Well, you’re too shy to tell me straight out, so just answer my questions yes or no. That’s all you have to do. You don’t really tell me anything but I get the information I need. It’s a win-win solution to our mutual dilemma.”

“I don’t have a dilemma.” There was a delicate blush staining Aiden’s well-defined cheekbones.

“I disagree. Your dilemma is that if you don’t tell me what I want to know, I will aggravate you until you cry like a little girl.” Olly blew on his fingernails and polished them against his shirt.

“Jesus.” Aiden banged his head against the mattress. “Fine. But you only get ten questions. After that you suffer in silence. Agreed?”

“Agreed. This is fun!” Ten questions should be enough, Olly reasoned.

Aiden shifted up the bed then made himself comfortable against the pillows. Olly drummed his fingers on his thigh, impatient to get started.

“Okay, question one.” He held up a finger. “Did Heath keep you awake with the assistance of sex toys?”

“Yes.” Aiden sighed heavily.

“That was an easy one and gives me a clue that more than one item was involved.” Olly licked his lips. “So was your sadistic Dom indulging himself with a little CBT?”

Aiden groaned. “Yes.”

“Mmm. Delicious. Of course cock and ball torture can be achieved in so many ways. However, I credit Heath with a particularly inventive imagination. Was some sort of predicament play involved?”

Aiden apparently had to think about that one. “Yes.”

“Ah, another clue. You weren’t sure how to answer so that tells me it wasn’t a complicated setup, but you must have been put in a position where movement had consequences. That wasn’t a question, by the way.”

“Olly, get on with it.”

“Wow. You whine almost as well as I do. Not quite, of course, because I am the world champion. Now, knowing you as well as I do, you probably gave Heath some cheek. He would have wanted to screw you hard but punish you at the same time. Am I getting warm?”

“Yes, and that was a question.”

“Gloating doesn’t suit you.” Olly flopped onto his front, folded his arms then rested his chin on them. He peeked at Aiden from beneath a few stray curls. “I still have six questions left. I don’t think Heath would use one of those clamp thingies that squash your balls flat. He cares about your bits too much.”

Aiden blinked. It was enough of a tell to convince Olly he was right.

“He’d want to stop you getting away from him because I know how you like to run. So, possibly a spreader bar…but that’s too boring for Heath. Something that gave him easy access to your arse but was suitably humiliating.” Olly frowned, mentally listing all the possible options. “I’ve got it!” He chuckled.

Aiden closed his eyes, his expression a picture of abject misery. “God, this is painful.”

“I’ll bet last night was, too!” Olly crowed. “Did he use a humbler?”

Aiden’s blush deepened. “Yes.” He spoke so softly, Olly barely caught the word.

“That’s so hot! Joe has a stiff rubber one, but I bet Heath’s is made of wood because that’s much more uncomfortable.” He giggled. “So there you are, on your hands and knees, unable to get up. The humbler is digging into the backs of your thighs and your balls are trapped and exposed.”

“Stop with the vivid descriptions, Olly. I was there, remember. God, I wish I had a gag handy. A big rubber ball gag.”

“Heath didn’t use one of those, though, because he would have wanted to hear you scream. He wouldn’t have been able to resist flogging your balls. Next question—did he use a flogger on you?”

“No!”

Aiden was far too triumphant for Olly’s liking. He was convinced Heath would have used something, so if not a flogger… “A crop! He used a crop.”

Aiden shifted on the bed. “You haven’t asked a question.”

“Don’t need to waste one. I can see from your face I’m right. I’ll bet you my next custard donut that he took his time wrangling you into that contraption, then he cropped your balls. I’ll add another donut, a jammy one this time, if he didn’t edge you for hours before fucking you into oblivion.”

“Do you have a camera hidden in our bedroom, Olly?” Aiden scowled.

“He probably chained your hands to the end of the bed, as well.” Olly smirked when Aiden rubbed at his wrists.

“I hate you.”

“You love me. I’m adorable.” Olly rested his chin on Aiden’s knee. “I’ll save the rest of my question quota for another time.”

“For that, I’m eternally grateful. Now, for goodness sake, finish packing. If you’re not ready by the time Joe wants to leave, he’ll probably tie you up and stuff you in the boot with the luggage.”

Olly thought about that for a moment and decided it was quite likely. He scooted off the bed, panic rising in his belly. “I don’t know what to do, Aiden. I can’t seem to think straight about anything at the moment—it’s all too confusing. Everything I look at reminds me of what happened at the hospital, even the silliest things like a pair of nail scissors, Joe’s razor, even a balled-up pair of socks for Christ’s sake. Then I think about what could have happened and I just want to curl up and cry.” Hot tears welled.

“That’s because you went through a significant traumatic experience and you’re suffering from a form of PTSD.”

At the sound of Joe’s calm tones, Olly whirled around. “Sir!” He threw himself into Joe’s welcoming arms.

“Thank you for keeping an eye on him for me, Aiden,” Joe said.

“What?” Olly rubbed at his eyes then peered at Aiden who was sliding off the bed. He edged around the room, keeping well out of Olly’s reach. “You were babysitting me for Joe?”

“I, um, maybe?” Aiden made it to the door.

“We’re leaving in an hour,” Joe said to Aiden. “Heath’s expecting you at your place.”

Aiden made his escape, mouthing ‘sorry’ at Olly before he left.

Olly tilted his head back to get a proper look at Joe’s face. Joe’s expression gave no indication of remorse or guilt, just his usual serene certainty that everything was under control. His control. He pressed a finger against Olly’s lips preventing him from forming them into a pout.

“Who knows what’s best for you, sweetheart?”

Olly ducked his head, escaping Joe’s finger. “You do, Sir.” In Olly’s mind, nothing was more certain. Joe only ever acted in Olly’s best interest, even to his own detriment. “But you don’t have to worry about me.”

“That’s for me to decide, Oliver. After everything you’ve been through recently I didn’t want you to be on your own.”

“Because you’re a psychologist and you were analyzing me?” Olly asked.

“No, because you needed a friend. I know what you’d do if you had too much time on your own to think. You’d mull over every detail of what happened and start to blame yourself, wish you’d handled things differently. Then you’d start worrying about all the what ifs with that creative imagination of yours, and end up having nightmares for weeks.”

“You know me too well, Sir.” Olly nuzzled against Joe’s chest, absorbing his warmth.

“I have better things to do with you in bed than watch you toss and turn in your sleep.”

“Yes, Sir.”

“So no sulking with Aiden. He’s a good friend.”

“The best. Now I understand why he didn’t run away when I interrogated him about what he and Heath got up to last night. I think you did me a favor, Sir.”

“That grin is far too wicked. I suspect you need to be punished.”

“Ooh, yes please!”

“But you have packing to finish because we need to get on the road if we’re going to make it to Hampshire in time for dinner.”

“You’re no fun, Sir.” Olly was torn between wanting to play with Joe and his curiosity about their destination. He would also get to see Carey and Alistair. Maybe some of his other friends, too. “What do you want me to take?”

Joe gave him a curious glance. The press of Joe’s fingers under his chin tilted Olly’s head back.

“This isn’t like you. Usually you’d have two enormous suitcases stuffed to bursting by now. What’s going on?”

“Sorry, Sir.” Tears that seemed to come all too quickly stung Olly’s eyes.

“Hey, now. None of that.” Joe kissed away a tear. “Are you having a tough time making decisions at the moment?”

Olly nodded. He worried that if he spoke he’d have a full-on nuclear meltdown.

“Well, it’s a good job you have me, isn’t it?”

Olly bobbed his head, feeling a bit like a nodding dog toy. His head felt too heavy for his neck and a wave of exhaustion washed over him. He wanted to grab a pillow, one that smelled of Joe, hug it tight and drift off to sleep.

“Where’s your bag?” Joe rooted around on the floor until he uncovered a bright purple suitcase on wheels. He put it on the bed then flipped the lid back. “Right. Important things first. Go to your underwear drawer and fetch the black silk thong, the powder-blue shorts and the white satin briefs with the open back. Unless they’re somewhere on the floor, of course.”

The order cleared Olly’s head. He went to the drawer and collected the underwear. “All your favorites, Sir.”

“We’re having a well-earned break. I think I’m entitled to indulge myself a little. For the evening, I want you to bring the navy leather trousers. Match them with that cerise shirt.”

Olly’s jaw dropped.

“Is that a problem?”

Olly caught the mischievous glint in Joe’s eye. “Sir, you’re teasing me. You know they don’t go together and you wouldn’t want me to turn people’s stomachs just by walking into a room, would you?”

“Why don’t you choose something more appropriate then?” A smile ghosted across Joe’s lips.

Olly burrowed into his pile of T-shirts and extracted a dip-dyed V-neck that was almost the same midnight blue as the trousers at the bottom, fading to the palest blue around the neckline. “This one!” He held it up triumphantly.

“That’s a little better than my option, I suppose.” Joe grinned. “You can bring the sheer slave-boy trousers, as well. You won’t need a top to go with those. I’ve already packed your white leather harness.”

Olly swallowed. His cock perked into life. “Aww, Sir! I don’t want to spend the entire journey like this.” He stared at his bulging jeans. “No fair.”

“If you pick out a couple of pairs of jeans, a warm sweater and two more T-shirts in the next three minutes, there just might be time to do something about that.”

Clothes flew through the air as Olly made his choices.

“Don’t forget socks and some comfortable boots for walking. That’s all you’ll need. I predict most of this will be brought back unworn because you won’t be needing clothes for much of what I have in mind.”

Olly gaped. He dropped his boots into the case and slammed the lid down. “I’m packed, Sir.”

“Jeans off. Lie on the bed, hands above your head.”

If there were an Olympic event for bed-mounting, Olly would have the gold medal sewn up. He kicked off his jeans before taking a flying leap toward the mattress. Naked from the waist down, he stretched his arms over his head to grasp the headboard. His cock strained skyward, jerking with excitement. Joe climbed onto the bed and straddled him. Olly came close to hyperventilating. Breathing became impossible when Joe ducked his head and took Olly’s swollen shaft into his mouth.

Olly tried to keep still, he really did, but it was a lost cause. The man he adored was sucking his cock in a way only a Dom could manage. Totally in control, Joe played Olly’s body like a finely tuned instrument. Powerful suction followed delicate puffs of air or the press of teeth. When Joe fondled his balls, Olly screamed.

“Sir! Sir…please… You can’t… I can’t… I have to…nng.” Permission to come became Olly’s reason for living. He needed it more than he needed air. Joe had trained him patiently and well. There was no way he could come without Joe’s order.

“Let it go, sweetheart.” Joe released him only for as long as it took to utter the words. Olly came on command into the heat of Joe’s mouth, body spasming, the burn of release flooding every vein. It took a while for Olly’s eyes to regain their focus. Joe leaned over him, licking his lips. He bent forward for a kiss and Olly could taste his essence in Joe’s mouth. Joe gave Olly’s sensitized cock a final squeeze. “I want you downstairs in the hall in five minutes. The mess in here can wait until we get back…when I’m certain you’ll be cleaning it up naked, on your knees.”

Olly’s cock gave a valiant twitch. “You said that on purpose, Sir!”

Joe climbed gracefully off the bed. “Of course I did.”

But Patrick’s never been good at separating sex from feelings, and this time is no exception. As their weeks together draw to a close, they need to decide if they have something worth pursuing or if it’s really just a casual thing.

 A Casual Thing #1
What a lovely contemporary friends-with-benefits(if their schedules work out)-turned-possible-romance.  When you find yourself crushing on your brother's best friend there's always the risk of not only hurting your heart but also to that friendship.  Annabelle Jacobs takes a light-hearted look at the trope when she introduces you to Will and Patrick.  Now, that's not saying there's no drama or moments of heartache, because there is but it's a wonderful balance to this love story.  Highly recommend A Casual Thing to those who are looking for a well written romantic comedy.

A Serious Thing #1.5
A wonderful holiday treat that finds both Will and Patrick wanting to let the other know just how they feel.  Timing is yet again a factor and it only heightens the moment everything finally aligns.  A great addition to my holiday library but as it is a sequel to A Casual Thing, you really should read book 1 first.

Chapter 1
“HEY,” PATRICK answered and put his phone on speaker, smiling as his brother’s voice filled the car.

“I hope you’re using handsfree. Mum’d kill me if I made you crash.”

Patrick rolled his eyes, even though Ben couldn’t see him. “Yes, I’m not stupid.” He indicated and pulled over into the slow lane, though, to be on the safe side. “I’m about twenty minutes from Bristol. Are you finishing work soon?”

Patrick heard the rustle of paper in the background and the sound of a drawer being closed.

“Yeah, I’m just leaving now.” Ben paused and a few shouts of “good-bye” and “enjoy your holiday” sounded before Ben spoke again. “Should be home before you get there. You remember how to get to the flat, don’t you?”

“Yep, M4, M32, and off at J1. I’ve got satnav for the rest of it.”

“Okay, well, call me if you get lost. Otherwise I’ll see you in a few.”

The line went dead, and Patrick grinned. He hadn’t seen his brother since Christmas, and just talking to him made Patrick feel more relaxed. Ben radiated calm. He was probably the most easygoing, laid-back person Patrick knew. Patrick’s roommate, Sean, wasn’t far behind him, which was part of the reason they got on so well, but Ben tended to put a person at ease the moment he entered the room. Patrick could do with a bit of that after the last few weeks.

He only made a couple of wrong turns before he spotted the sign for Ben’s road, and then he turned onto the street and parked outside the building. Ben lived in a two-bedroom flat on a large but nice housing estate just off the motorway—close enough to town so it didn’t cost too much in a taxi, but far enough out to get away from it all.

He had one of the ground-floor flats and already had the door open as Patrick walked down the path toward him. “Bloody hell, look at the state of you.” Ben grabbed the beanie from Patrick’s head and ruffled his hair, grinning. “Good to see you, though.” He pulled Patrick into a hug, almost crushing him in the process.

They had the same coloring—blue eyes and dark brown hair, although Ben’s curled where Patrick’s was straight—but Ben had about two inches on him, and at least a stone and a half in weight. Ben had always been sporty and played anything that involved a ball, whereas Patrick had stuck to running. He had shit coordination—an endless source of amusement to the rest of his family and friends—so he tended to avoid team sports. Patrick enjoyed watching them, though, which was just as well, considering Ben hardly bothered with any other channels except Sky Sports.

“Can’t breathe.” Patrick dug his fingers into Ben’s ribs to make him let go, laughing when Ben flinched in response. “And fuck off. There’s nothing wrong with the way I look.” He gestured to his tight, long-sleeved T-shirt, skinny jeans, and Converse. They fit him well, snug in all the right places.

“I bet you look like every other student. Where’s your sense of originality?”

Patrick gave Ben a light shove and pushed past him into the flat. “Shut up and start fetching my stuff in from the car. I’m dying for a piss.” He turned and chucked his keys to his brother, grinning at the indignant look on his face.

“I’m regretting this already, just so you know. And you better have left most of your crap at Mum and Dad’s. I don’t want a flat full of your boxes.”

“Yeah, yeah.”

By the time Patrick finished in the toilet, Ben had grabbed the two bags and was coming into the lounge. “Is this all you brought? Not much for the whole summer.”

“There’s a few more bits in the car, but I’m only here for a couple of months, and it’s not like I can’t wash stuff.”

Ben raised an eyebrow. “I see living with Sean all these years has done some good after all.”

“Ugh,” Patrick groaned. He wasn’t that bad. “He’s my roommate, not my mum. He doesn’t make me do chores you know.” Sean was also his best friend, and three years of living together at university had made Patrick more self-sufficient, but he wasn’t about to admit it. “Anyway,” he said, walking down the hall as he spoke. “I’m assuming you’ve cleared out all your shit from the spare room?” Patrick looked back over his shoulder as he opened the door. Ben usually shoved anything he didn’t use in there until he either gave it to charity or took it down to the rubbish tip.

“Yeah, um… about that….” Ben let the sentence hang there as Patrick opened the door to the spare room and stopped in his tracks.

Okay, so it wasn’t full of Ben’s stuff, but it wasn’t empty either. The bed looked recently slept in, the quilt pulled up sort of straight but the pillows at odd angles, as though it had been made in a hurry. A couple of shirts hung on the wardrobe door, and the desk had a laptop on it and some toiletries that definitely belonged to a guy.

Ben appeared behind him, scratching at the back of his neck, but not looking particularly bothered. Patrick waved a hand around the room and raised his eyebrow. “I guess I’m not staying in here, then?”

“Sorry, it only happened a couple of weeks ago, and I forgot all about it. But he’s only here for another two weeks, so you can sleep in my room while I’m away.” Ben gestured to the door opposite and picked up Patrick’s bags again. “I’m off in the morning, so you only have to sleep on the sofa for one night.”

Patrick followed him, trying not to feel disappointed at not having the place to himself. He collapsed on Ben’s bed, making sure to hang his shoes over the edge. “So, who is it, then? Do I know him?” He narrowed his eyes, watching as Ben dropped both bags in front of the wardrobe and turned to face him. “It better not be someone old and boring who’s going to judge everything I do. Christ.” He threw his arm over his face and let out a put-upon sigh. “I might as well have stayed at home.”

“He’s not old. He’s a year older than me.”

“You’re old.”

“Shut the fuck up, or I will send you back home.” The bed dipped as Ben sat down. “And yes, you know him. He’s a good guy—I wouldn’t leave my little brother alone for two weeks with someone I didn’t trust completely.”

Patrick sat up and leaned on his elbows, taking in the slightly shifty expression on his brother’s face. Nothing normally fazed Ben, and he’d said that Patrick knew the guy and that Ben trusted him, so Patrick didn’t see what the problem could be. He liked to think he was pretty easy to get along with. He maybe had a lot of energy, which irritated some people, but he tried to tone it down with anyone other than close friends or family. Ben’s mates all knew him pretty well anyway—Patrick usually came down to Bristol for at least a few days every time he had a break from uni.

“Well, I’m assuming it’s one of your friends, and honestly, Ben, they’re a great bunch of lads, so I don’t get why you’re being weird.”

“I’m not being weird.”

Patrick gave him his best “yeah right” look and sat up a bit. “Seriously, I won’t have a problem sharing with any of them,” he said, nudging Ben with his shoulder. “Well, except Will maybe, but that’s only because—”

Patrick stopped, the words dying on his tongue as he noticed Ben wince.

“No.” He jumped off the bed, fisting his hands in his hair. “No fucking way. Ben, please tell me you’re not leaving me alone for two weeks with the guy I have a huge unrequited, and frankly, embarrassing, crush on?”

Ben shrugged. “He needed somewhere to stay. I’d sort of forgotten you had the hots for him.”

“How could you forget?” Patrick paced in front of the bed. “The last time I was here, I tried to climb into his lap and told him how hot he was. In front of his boyfriend.”

“Oh yeah.” Ben grinned, and Patrick stopped his pacing to punch him on the arm.

“It’s not funny.”

“It was hilarious.” Ben ducked out of the way when Patrick tried to punch him again. “Look, you were drunk. We all were. He doesn’t hold it against you.”

“But he won’t have forgotten.” The whole thing still made Patrick cringe every time he thought about it. He may have been drunk, but sadly not drunk enough to wipe the horrifying experience from his brain.

“Sit down. I think you might be overreacting just a tad.” Ben even used his finger and thumb to demonstrate how much he thought Patrick was overreacting before grabbing Patrick’s arm and yanking him back down onto the bed.

Patrick sighed. Fine. Maybe he was being overly dramatic, but come on. This was Will. Tall, dark, and handsome, and as easygoing as Ben. He oozed charm and made you want to curl up with him somewhere warm and never ever move. Well, that last part could just be Patrick.

Fuck.

He was going to make such an arse of himself. He flopped onto the bed and covered his face. “I hate you. You are the worst brother ever.”

Ben laughed as he tugged on Patrick’s hand until he was forced to sit up. “Don’t be such a drama queen, and come and help me get the rest of your things.” He slung an arm around Patrick’s shoulders and gave him a squeeze. “It’ll be fine. Will knows you’re coming. I told him this morning. He’s looking forward to seeing you again.”

“Yeah, I’m sure.”

IT DIDN’T take long for them to get the last of Patrick’s stuff in from his car and dump it into Ben’s bedroom. Patrick made them mugs of tea, and Ben grabbed a packet of chocolate digestives from a bag their mum had sent down.

“Why does Will need to stay with you, then?” Patrick asked, hissing a little when Cleo, Ben’s cat, dug her claws into his thigh. He carefully extracted them and ran his hand down her back, the black fur soft under his fingers. “I thought he was happily shacked up with what’s-his-name?”

It appeared to be Ben’s turn to roll his eyes this time. “Darren. You’ve met him loads of times.”

“Whatever. So why isn’t Darren here too, then?” A sudden thought occurred to him—the spare room had a double bed—but fuck no, Ben would never do that to him. “Please tell me he’s not going to be staying here as well?”

“Jesus, what do you take me for? Of course not.” Ben shook his head as he reached for his mug. “They split up, and the lease on the flat is up, so Will has bought a place round the corner. But it won’t be ready for another two weeks.”

“Wait, what?”

“Which bit didn’t you understand?” The smirk on Ben’s face told Patrick he knew exactly what Patrick was referring to. “Oh, didn’t I mention that Will and Darren were no longer together?”

Patrick shook his head, words eluding him as he began to view the next two weeks in a whole new light.

“Sorry.” Ben dipped a biscuit in his tea, not looking remotely sorry, as he settled back into his chair.

Before Patrick had a chance to reply, the sound of a key in Ben’s front door had them both turning toward the lounge entrance. The door wasn’t closed all the way, and they could hear Will rustling about in the small hallway, but couldn’t see him yet. Patrick felt his heart rate ramp up and his cheeks heat, which was absolutely ridiculous—he was twenty-two, not sixteen. His leg began to bounce a little, and Ben sat up to put his hand on Patrick’s knee to stop it, only removing it when Patrick slapped it away and glared at him.

“Hey.” Will smiled as he stepped into the lounge, eyes brightening a little as his gaze landed on Patrick. “You made it, then.”

Patrick managed to smile back and squeak out a “yes,” before quickly taking a drink of his tea to occupy his mouth. He clearly couldn’t be trusted to speak right now.

“It’s good to see you, again.” Will strolled into the kitchen and flicked on the kettle. The open-plan layout of the flat meant Patrick had a great view, and he took the opportunity to look his fill. Will ran a hand through his hair—shorter at the sides and back than Patrick remembered—shaking some water out of it. “Got caught in the bloody rain as I left.” He looked back over his shoulder. “Anyone need a top up?” he added, turning around to face them.

Ben lifted his mug up a bit. “No, mate, we’re good.”

“Okay, then,” he said walking over to them. He was all broad shoulders and stubble, dark eyes and warmth, and fuck it all, Patrick was in such deep shit. “I’m just going to go and get changed while the kettle boils.” He met Patrick’s gaze and smiled again before heading off to his bedroom.

Patrick swallowed.

“Oi,” Ben whispered and poked him with his toes. “Close your mouth. I don’t want any drool on my cushions.”

“Oh piss off. This is all your fault.”

Ben leaned forward a little and motioned for Patrick to do the same. Patrick barely resisted rolling his eyes, because it wasn’t like Will would hear them. He had his bedroom door shut, and they weren’t exactly shouting, but he shuffled along the sofa and leaned forward anyway. “What?”

“Look, I wanted to say….” He paused, and Patrick felt a flare of excitement about what Ben could possibly want to tell him. Maybe he had some inside tips about how to get into Will’s pants and—yeah, just no. That was wrong on so many levels.

“What?”

Ben grinned and sat back in the chair. “Don’t have sex in my bed.”

Patrick looked at him, wrinkling his nose. “What? I’ve just bloody got here. It’s not like I’ve got someone lined up for the minute you leave.”

The door to the guest bedroom started to open, and Ben nodded toward it. “I’m just saying, do it in Will’s bed and not mine.”

Patrick almost choked on his tea, making Ben laugh as the door opened and Will walked back out. His brother could be such a dick sometimes. How had he forgotten this? Patrick’s cheeks were on fire; he felt the heat seeping down toward his neck, and—fuck it—he was going to have sex all over his brother’s room if it killed him.

“What’s so funny?” Will asked, straightening out his unfairly fitted T-shirt.

Patrick shot Ben a warning glance, hoping Ben wouldn’t embarrass him any more. Ben winked at him and gave a tiny shake of his head, making Patrick relax enough to finish his tea.

“I was telling Patrick that he’s on litter tray duty while I’m gone.”

Will eyed the cat now sprawled on her back beside Patrick. “Oh thank fuck for that.” Cleo opened one eye, as though she knew they were talking about her, and fixed him with a glare. “Your cat hates me. There’s no way I was gonna clean up her shit.”

Patrick idly stroked along Cleo’s belly, smiling as she began to purr. “Yeah right,” Patrick muttered, watching the way she stretched out her paws. “I don’t believe that for a minute. Everyone loves you.” He didn’t realize what he’d said until Ben coughed, and Will leaned over to ruffle Patrick’s hair.

“Thanks, mate. See, Ben. Even your own brother prefers me.” Will thankfully moved away toward the kitchen, leaving Patrick to try and sink into the sofa and out of sight.

“Um… that’s not what I said. I just meant… you know….” Patrick gestured down at the cat, not that Will could see him, he had his head in the fridge, probably searching for milk. “I can’t imagine someone hating you.” God, he needed to shut up.

Ben kicked him in the shin to get his attention, mouthing, “Smooth,” and trying not to laugh.

Will glanced over at him then, milk in one hand as he shut the fridge. He smiled and winked, and fuck, Patrick would need to leave the room soon. “Thanks. I think Cleo is the exception.”

True to form, when Will came over to sit down, she hissed at him and disappeared under the dining room table. Patrick watched her go, unable to keep the grin off his face. “Wow, she really does hate you.” He laughed and felt some of the tension drain away as Ben began to rib Will about cats having excellent taste. The two of them bantered back and forth, Patrick joining in as he began to feel more comfortable and less like a love-struck teen. Maybe these next two weeks wouldn’t be that bad after all.

THEY WERE definitely going to be that bad.

As soon as they’d finished eating one of the huge frozen lasagnas courtesy of Patrick’s mum, Ben yawned and stood up. “Right, I’m off to bed. Got to pack a few bits first and then be up too fucking early.” He grabbed his plate and took it into the kitchen before coming to stand behind the sofa. “You still all right to give me a lift to the airport?” He clapped a hand on Patrick’s shoulder as he met his gaze.

Patrick rested his head back on the cushions and nodded. “Yeah, ’course. What time do you need to leave?”

“Flight leaves at six forty-five, so I said I’d meet the others a couple of hours before. Leave about four?”

“That is way too fucking early.” Patrick yawned at the thought of it. “But, yeah, that’s fine. Give me a prod in the morning, make sure I’m up in time to have a cuppa first.”

Ben smiled and gave him a gentle shove. “It’ll be my pleasure to wake you up.”

“Yeah, whatever. Go to bed.”

Ben ruffled Patrick’s hair as he left, making sure to leave it as messy as he could and laughing as Patrick told him to fuck off. He’d have to get it cut if people kept messing with it. Fuckers. Patrick was still smiling as Ben closed his bedroom door, but then it dawned on him that he and Will were now alone, and suddenly Patrick couldn’t think of anything to say. All the relaxed feelings of a few minutes ago disappeared, and Patrick felt the tension begin to seep back into the room. He hoped to God he was the only one who could feel it.

Will usually had no trouble putting everyone at ease, and Patrick needed him to hold up most of the conversation until he could get rid of his stupid nervousness. He had no business being like this. It wasn’t as though he didn’t know Will. Despite Patrick’s long-standing crush, he’d never had any trouble getting along with Will before. They always had a laugh, and Patrick liked talking to him.

But Will had never been single before. There’d never been the slightest chance that anything could happen between them—not that it would now; Patrick wasn’t stupid. There were far too many reasons, not least of all, he was almost positive Will didn’t see him like that—Patrick would probably always be Ben’s younger brother to Will. But now, in the back of Patrick’s mind, he couldn’t help but think there was no boyfriend standing in his way. It made him uneasy, and from the look on Will’s face, Will could tell.

After a few minutes of uncomfortable silence, Will sat forward, rested his forearms on his thighs, and clasped his hands. Patrick waited expectantly, hoping like fuck Will wasn’t about to give him “the talk.” He didn’t think he’d been that obvious.

“I’m sorry about taking your room,” Will said finally, and it was the last thing Patrick had been expecting, so he frowned.

“What?”

“I know Ben forgot to tell you I’d be here, so I imagine you weren’t expecting to end up on the sofa.”

“Yeah, but that’s only for one night.” Shit. Will looked guilty. Patrick knew he’d been acting a little off, and Will obviously thought it was because Patrick was pissed off at him. “I’m not bothered, honest.”

Will looked pointedly at Ben’s sofa, which probably wasn’t going to be all that comfortable to sleep on, now that Patrick thought about it.

“Point taken.” Patrick laughed and forced himself to shake off his weird feelings. He might not get to spend the next fourteen days in Will’s bed—which would be the ideal scenario—but they could definitely have a good time. Patrick refused to feel awkward for the whole two weeks. “Ben’s sofa sucks to sleep on, but like I said, it’s only for one night. I’m not bothered about you having the guest room. I mean, have you seen the bed in Ben’s room? It’s fucking huge.”

Will smirked, and Patrick mentally kicked himself for talking about anything bed-related with Will. His mind was likely to go to places it really shouldn’t if he didn’t want to embarrass himself. “Anyway,” he forged ahead, ignoring the way he felt a little hot all over. “What I mean is that I don’t mind you being here. To be honest, I wasn’t looking forward to being here on my own anyway.” That may have been a barefaced lie before, but things change. “It’ll be nice to have some company.”

“Thanks.” Will’s smile was soft and genuine this time, and Patrick immediately returned it. “The last few months have been a bit shit, and I didn’t want to spend four weeks in a B and B.” He stood and stretched, and Patrick tried not to look at the strip of skin exposed where Will’s T-shirt rode up. He also tried to ignore the dark hair peeking over the top of Will’s pajama bottoms, but he failed. Miserably. “I think I’ll turn in too. Night.” He squeezed Patrick’s shoulder as he walked past.

“Night.” Patrick sank back into the sofa cushions with a groan, a warm feeling settling deep in his belly.

He was so totally fucked.

A Serious Thing #1.5
Chapter 1
“WHEN ARE you coming down to Bristol?” Ben’s voice sounded tinny and far away.

Patrick paused, wondering what his brother was doing. “Am I on speakerphone?”

“Yeah, I’m making a sandwich.”

Patrick wedged his phone between his ear and his shoulder as he locked the door. Sean had left about an hour ago—spending the Christmas break at his parents’ house—and Patrick was running late. He hitched his bag higher on his shoulder and slipped his keys into his back pocket. “I’m going to Mum and Dad’s first.” There’d been a smattering of snow the night before, and Patrick toed at the flakes clinging to the grass. “Will is away on that training course until the twenty-second, so I’m coming down when he gets back.”

Ben hummed down the line. “Oh yeah. What a pain in the arse. Who runs a course that close to Christmas? You’d think they’d all be winding down by now.”

“Will wasn’t too pleased about it.”

“No, I know. He was moaning about it all last week.”

Patrick wasn’t too thrilled either. He’d not seen Will for the last two weekends, and they’d both been looking forward to spending nearly three weeks together. But now Will was stuck in London, and Patrick had promised to go and see his parents for a bit. “At least this way Mum isn’t too mad about me spending Christmas with Will.”

“I thought you’d be taking him to meet the in-laws?”

Patrick blushed. He could tell Ben was grinning without needing to see his face, and was suddenly glad Ben couldn’t see him either.

“Fuck off. We’re not that bad.”

Ben snorted. “Uh-huh.”

Patrick walked down the path to the road where he’d parked and didn’t bother to say anything else, because yes, they probably were that bad to the casual observer.

Ben already teased him mercilessly for being so whipped; he didn’t need to give him any more ammunition. Patrick didn’t care, though. Will was awesome.

“You still there?” Ben sounded loud in his ear this time. He must have taken him off speaker.

“Yep.”

“Seriously, though, Pat. Have you told him how you feel yet?”

Patrick sighed. “He knows.”

“Are you sure?” Ben had his serious Dad voice on, and Patrick rolled his eyes. “In my experience, people still like to be told these things, and Will is no exception.”

“Yeah, yeah.” He opened the boot and shoved his bags inside.

Ben had gone suspiciously silent, like he did when he was thinking about something. “Patrick?”

“What?”

“Are you waiting to tell him at Christmas?”

“No.” Patrick shook his head out of habit, but his voice wavered a little, giving him away.

“Oh my God, you are!” Ben crowed. “You cheesy motherfucker.”

Patrick’s shoulders slumped. He’d wanted to tell Will so many times, but their weekends were always rushed, trying to pack enough into those two days to last them for the week they spent apart. He wanted it to be special.

“Hey.” Ben didn’t sound as though he was laughing anymore, but Patrick was still embarrassed.

“You think it’s a shitty idea, don’t you?”

“No, that’s not what I said.” He paused, and Patrick imagined him running a hand through his hair while he thought about how to phrase his next words. “Cheesy and clichΓ©d? Yes. But you two are sickeningly sweet.”

“We are not,” Patrick grumbled. He opened the car door and got in. “We have hot, raunchy sex all the time. Nothing sweet about us.”

“Fuck you. Stop that.”

Patrick grinned.

“I can hear you smiling, you arse. What have I told you? Your sex life comes strictly under ‘things your brother never needs to know about.’”

“Sorry.”

“Sure you are. Look, the reason I called was to invite you down for a couple of days. You can stay with me until Will gets back. I don’t get to see you much these days, now you’re shacked up with my best friend.”

Patrick hesitated before starting the engine. Despite spending nearly every weekend in Bristol, he hadn’t seen that much of Ben. “I told Mum I’d stay until the twenty-second, but I’m sure she won’t mind if I leave a day or two earlier to come and see you. So yeah, that’d be great.”

“Awesome. Just give me a call when you’re on your way.”

“All right. See you soon.”

“Bye.”

Patrick set his phone on the seat next to him and bit his lip. As much as he was looking forward to seeing everyone for Christmas, he still had all his presents to buy, and he had no idea what to get for Will. Maybe Ben could help with that? Patrick would have to pick his brains when he got down there—he wanted this Christmas to be perfect.

SIX DAYS later Patrick was pulling up on the street outside his brother’s flat—car full of presents his parents had sent down, and a few Patrick had bought. It’d be strange not spending Christmas with his parents, but they’d still have Ben. Patrick planned on going back up the day after Boxing Day, hopefully with Will in tow. He just needed to ask him first.

His phone rang as he was getting out of the car—Will’s name flashed up on the screen. Patrick smiled as he answered. “Hey.”

“Hey. Are you at Ben’s yet?”

“Yeah, just got here. Where are you? Shouldn’t you be busy learning new things?”

Will laughed softly in Patrick’s ear, and Patrick’s chest tightened. He missed hearing that in person. “We’ve stopped for an early lunch, so I snuck out to call you.” Will let out a long sigh, and Patrick felt his frustration. “I really wish I was there.”

“Yeah, me too.”

They were both silent, and three little words were on the tip of Patrick’s tongue. He’d waited this long, though; he wasn’t going to say it over the bloody phone.

Voices sounded in the background on Will’s end, and he sighed again. “I need to go, but I’ll call you later when I’m back at the hotel.”

“Okay.”

“Bye, Patrick.”

“Bye.”

Patrick let his head rest against the back of his seat and closed his eyes. The last few times he’d spoken to Will, it always felt like something was missing when they ended the call. He was pretty sure he knew how Will felt about him, but maybe Ben was right. Patrick wanted to hear Will say it as badly as he needed to say it to Will.

He jumped in his seat when someone banged on his car window, and he opened his eyes to find Ben grinning at him.

“Are you planning on getting out anytime soon?”

Patrick gave him the finger and opened his door quickly enough that Ben had to jump out of the way or risk being hit.

“Wanker.”

“Don’t scare me, then.” He pulled Ben into a hug and let himself sink into it. He’d missed this too. “It’s good to see you.”

“Yeah, you too.”

Ben helped him with his stuff and led the way to his front door. “So what do you want to do this afternoon?” He glanced back as he spoke, and it was Patrick’s turn to grin. Ben was going to hate him.

“I need to go Christmas shopping for Will.”

“I can have sex with other men when we’re married, right?”

“Hell no you can’t have sex,” Max ground out between clenched teeth. “We’re supposed to be newlyweds in love. What if Angela found out?” He shook his head at my puffed out lower lip. “I’d have to divorce you. That would defeat the whole purpose of everything, now wouldn’t it?”

“Jesus, I hope you’re not going to be this grouchy when we’re married. I thought since you get to have a pregnant girlfriend running around, I could have a little dick on the side, too.” I laughed a little and corrected, “Well, not a little dick, but some dick.” At his continued glare, I spread my hands palm up with a belabored sigh of acceptance. “Okay, okay, but if I can’t have sex, then you can’t have sex.”

“Neither of us can fuck during our marriage.”

After he delivered that F bomb, we stared at each other in shocked silence for a few moments.

Max recovered first, tugging slightly on the collar of his shirt and clearing his throat. “So we agree. It’s a marriage of friends with no benefits.” Max shrugged, as if it was no big deal that his cock saw ten times the action of your average penis on the streets.

Double shit. I closed my eyes for a second at his words, trying to imagine months and months with no sex. I’ve gone nearly insane after these last four days of erotic dreams, even the odd one.

I try to be a good friend to those I care about. But what was I getting out of this damn deal, other than the guarantee of carpel tunnel in both wrists from a future filled with massive amounts of masturbation?

I nodded jerkily.

“Was that a yes?” Max demanded in a pissed tone.

“Yes, dammit.” Not that I blamed him for being irritable, since I was also feeling the pinch of the no sex rule already. “What about my big money?”

“What about it?” Not missing beat, Max went on, “Since we’ll be living together, I’ll pay all our living expenses. Agreed?”

Putting a hand to my forehead at what living together meant, I moaned, “Oh dear God.” I dropped my hand and sighed in defeat. I didn’t eat much or use much electricity, so Max’s normal bills wouldn’t increase much, wherever we lived. “Okay, agreed.”

Still somewhat reeling that I’d actually said yes to his idiotic scheme, but seeing no way out now that I’d given my word, I wriggled in my seat feeling incredibly put upon. Whenever I feel put upon, I tend to get belligerent.

Max laughed, but there was a challenging edge to his voice. “Why do you look mad if you agree?”

I blurted, “I’m not teasing about the money. I think it’s only fair I be compensated for my role as your wife.” At his blank stare, I continued hurriedly, “I mean, I know we’re friends, and generally I wouldn’t charge a friend for help, but I’m putting myself at your disposal for ten months. Ten months! I’m giving you all my time and my acting skills.” Thinking of the no sex mandate, I choked out, “I’m putting my whole life on hold to help you.”

Eyes unreadable, Max responded evenly, “True. So what do you think is fair compensation for posing as my wife for ten months?”

A straight jacket in a fucking insane asylum was the correct answer, but I replied briskly in a business-like manner, “A new furnace, a new roof, new insulation for my house, a new fridge,” I glanced at my wrists, thought for a second of my pitiful health insurance plan, and went for it all before I lost my nerve, “and some cash set aside for possible future surgeries.”

He raised his brows at that but only murmured, “How much cash you talking?”

“Umm,” I scrambled to recall my deductibles, “uh, five thousand?”

“You don’t sound sure.”

“I’m sure.” I nodded, as if I hadn’t noticed his small smile.

He shrugged. “Deal.”

“Good.” I nodded brusquely again.

Letting out a breath at his easy agreement, I didn’t care if Max was amused. I was happy the negotiations were over--asking for money did not come easy for me.

In the past, James Byrd had offered me business loans to get ahead. Max had offered me cash, no strings attached. I’d stubbornly refused both of them. I liked standing on my own two feet. My take has always been accepting money from friends was the quickest way to lose them, but this was different. This marriage to Max will be the job from hell and I’ll deserve every penny.

Friday's Film Adaptions: The Gracie Allen Murder Case by SS Van Dine

Summary:
In this delightful outing, SS Van Dine introduces his re-life friend, comedienne Gracie Allen, into a Philo Vance mystery.  The setting is New York City, but far from Philo Vance's typical milieu of Chinese antiquities, rare books, and esoteric studies.  A peculiarly diabolical murder is solved through Vance's expert knowledge of rare perfumes and the invaluable assistance lent by Gracie, whose sweetheart, George Burns, is head perfume-smeller at the In-O-Scent Perfume Corporation.

"Gracie helps to expose a murder with the same inspired silliness that has made her fame over the air.  Van Dine fans will enjoy him in this new role of humorist." -- Book of the Month Club News(1938)

Film
The zany plot follows nitwit Gracie Allen trying to help master sleuth Philo Vance solve a murder. Allen's uncle fixes her up with Bill at a company picnic. When the two go out to a nightclub that night, Gracie inadvertently links Bill to the murder of a thug after finding the dead body and Bill's cigarette case at the scene of the crime. While being questioned at the club, she meets Vance who's investigating the homicide. After Gracie's bungled attempts to solve the case, Vance decides it might be easier to have her working with him. Despite Gracie's "help," the two eventually find the real killer.

Random Meeting by Maggie Mundy

Title: Random Meeting
Author: Maggie Mundy
Genre: Contemporary Romance, Psychic Elements
Release Date: January 5, 2017
Summary:
Beth is a widow and Greg is an ex-con. They are two lost souls who have a random night of sex together. Nine months later they meet again. This time, swear words roll off her tongue as she gives birth to their son. Everything changes when Greg holds Josh, but this isn’t real, they are not married, or a happy family. Plus there are ghosts on the scene who plan on taking possession of people for their own ends. Greg can offer money, but can’t offer love. Their relationship should be doomed, but sometimes the most unlikely of partners bring out the best in each other if they can only stay alive.

Greg’s lips were so close, and Beth wanted them on hers. No, she didn’t, but yes she did––okay, seriously confused here. His eyes gazed into hers, and she sensed he was waiting for her. It was just a kiss, but it had been so long. More than that, she needed him to stay and make her feel alive, if he left her alone, she might do the unthinkable. She moved forward and lips touched, just a feather-light touch. She trembled, he trembled, and from that moment, she was lost.

He moved back and smiled at her. They were like a couple of naughty kids doing something they shouldn’t. His strong hands held her face as if she were delicate porcelain as he ran his right thumb slowly along her bottom lip, then he leaned forward. His lips brushed against hers, caressing them from one end to the other. Alarm bells were ringing and saying this was much more than a kiss, but she decided to ignore them just for one moment, then she would ask him to go.

That was a lie, and she knew it.

His lips parted, and Beth tasted the sweetness of his coffee as she explored his mouth. She had forgotten how sensual a kiss could be as his lips pressed firmly against hers, and his tongue swirled and discovered every corner of her mouth. His arms encircled her waist, pulling her close as his body pressed into her. It was too long since she had felt a man against her, a man hard for her, wanting her. Her arms hung at her side. She didn’t trust herself to touch him. She didn’t trust herself to do anything. He pulled away, and she found herself leaning forward, her breathing rapid as her mouth and body ached and yearned for more.

“I’d like to stay, Beth. You don’t know me, but I won’t hurt you, I promise. I just want to be with you.”

She could tell him to leave, but he made her hot in places that had been cold for so long. Her need was frightening in its intensity. He stood still. She needed to be wanted by him tonight, even if he walked out the door in the morning. In fact, she wanted him to walk out the door in the morning. No one would know. Didn’t she deserve to have a night of passion with a stranger, to make up for all the pain?

“Yes.” Was that her voice? It sounded breathy. He smiled at her and then bent his head so his lips touched her neck. His tongue swirled on her skin, causing her to melt inside. Her body was hot, and yet she shivered. The yearning she sensed deep inside was almost painful, but it was a good pain. She was still alive.

He stopped and stood back.

“You’re sure about this? I can still go. I don’t want to make you do anything you don’t want to.”

Author Bio:
I live in Adelaide, Australia with my husband, one cat, two dogs and a snake. I have a motorbike that I would like to ride more than I do and I love walking at the beach and listening to the waves.  I've always loved reading all forms of fiction from high fantasy and paranormal to contemporary and decided the stories in my head needed to be written down. It was either that or start on medication. Unlike many, I didn’t know I wanted to be a writer until a few years back.  I started off doing a degree in drama but soon realized my love was in writing, though there is a play lurking somewhere on my computer. My day job is as a nurse in the operating room. I believe romance can be fun to read and write but it’s exciting to spice it up with the uncertainty that comes with suspense where the rules can be broken.
