Taro boosts himself over the windowsill and lands lightly on his feet. When he looks up at me, there’s concern on his face.

I should be embarrassed, but I’m not. I’m too caught up in the stream of my raging emotions. Besides, Taro came to my room. I’m allowed to cry in my own room.

“What … what are all these?” Taro asks.

“My mom …” I glance toward the mess and see a picture of me and Mom with Vex headsets on. “I was just looking at these pictures. Mom packed them.”

I sit down inside the arc of photos, my eyes roving across them. Taro crouches down across from me. He doesn’t say anything. His eyes drink in the smiling pictures of me and Mom together.

“I can’t even remember the last time we smiled together,” I whisper. “All we did over the past few years was fight.”

“Sulan …” His dark eyes are soft with empathy.

“How—how do you do it?” I whisper. “How do you get through your days without her?”

“At first,” he whispers, “you just go through the motions. It’s hard. I won’t sugarcoat it for you. I … ran a lot in those first few weeks after her murder. I ran until my legs collapsed. Sometimes I ran until I vomited. Or I’d work out with a punching bag. I’d hit it until I couldn’t lift my arms. Then I’d kick it until my shins and knees bled.”

He reaches out with one hand, extending it over the photos. He touches my face with the tips of his fingers. His hand unfolds, fingers spreading out to cradle my cheek. I close my eyes and lean into his strong fingers. Touching is such a strange real-world thing to do, but I find it comforting.

Taro steps over the photos, kneeling beside me. He’s so close I feel his body heat.

He pulls an ink pen out of his pocket and takes my left hand, cradling my wrist. The bandage around his missing finger brushes my skin. He leans forward. For a panicked moment, I think he’s going to try and kiss me. But his eyes are focused on my arm, not my face.

He places the pen between his teeth and pulls off the cap. His writing hand rests on my palm, pen poised over my forearm. The tip of the pen comes down, and he starts to draw.

His hand moves with the surety of an artist. He draws on my skin, sketching lines that come together and form the face of my mother. Mom’s expression is one of focus and determination. It’s how she looked back on the League freighter before she was killed. Her black hair is tied back into a bun. Her eyes are fierce, her jaw set.

Taro leans back, recapping the pen. “So you won’t forget what she looked like that day she came to save you.” He doesn’t let go of my hand.

Something inside me snaps. I start to shake. Tears overflow down my cheeks.

Taro’s arms come around me. I stiffen in surprise for an instant, then fall against him and sob into his shoulder. He holds me close as I weep. He strokes my damp hair with strong, gentle hands. I can’t remember ever feeling so wretched and so safe at the same time.

“She made me mad all the time,” I say into his shoulder, forcing the words out between sobs. “The last time I saw her, back on the ship, we had a fight. I’m still angry at her.”

“Do you love her?” Taro’s warm breath feathers my ear.

“Yes,” I wail, without hesitation. “I loved her. I love her, Taro. I love her!”

“That’s all that matters. All the other stuff doesn’t mean anything in the end. Hold on to the love.”

If possible, I cry even harder. Images of my last few months with Mom flash through my head. The two of us arguing as I begged her to teach me self-defense; her catching me watching Merc reruns in my bedroom, our discussion disintegrating into another yelling match as I accused her of leaving me defenseless; our last epic fight over a gun; and the wounded anger that hung between us on the League freighter.

And despite all that, I ache for her. I ache, and ache, and ache.

Seasons Within by Lele Iturrioz

Title: Seasons Within
Author: Lele Iturrioz
Genre: Young Adult, Fantasy
Release Date: December 15, 2016
Publisher: Acorn Publishing

Summary:
Most teenage girls know their name, where they came from, who they are. Not G, a beautiful redhead with unusual markings on her wrist. She gets her name from a silver locket she keeps around her neck, unaware the engraved letter “G” on its front holds the secret to her past.

G’s life before the age of six has been a mystery to her. Each night for the last twelve years she’s been haunted by the same nightmare—a war. Horrendous beasts, warriors able to wield the four elements, and a boy who saves her by means of blue fire taunt her memory. But on her eighteenth birthday, G’s life begins to unravel. When she meets her new Chemistry professor, a man with an uncanny resemblance to the boy who saves her, she knows there must be more to her dreams.

It’s dangerous not knowing who you are, what you’re capable of, and what future awaits you. Especially when the darkness that slaughtered your entire world, just found you.

1. What is the biggest influence/interest that brought you to this genre?
Harry Potter was the catalyst of my love for fantasy.

2. When writing a book, what is your favorite part of the creative process (outline, plot, character names, editing, etc)?
Planning! I love planning. It makes my day to know I need to write a new character or plan a little more about the world. I have a booklet called Terra’s guidebook (download here for free…)
in that booklet I have all my characters and their stats, the world of Terra, its rules, its past, the cities, the bad guys, the symbols, everything! (Warning, it has spoilers)

3. When reading a book, what genre do you find most interesting/intriguing?
I’m more intrigued about characters than genre. I can read any genre as long as their characters are beautifully planned. Saying that…I absolutely love romance! Not the insta-love type of romance because one of my favorite things to read is the way a relationship develops. The nerves, the confusion, the flirting, all those things that makes me feel like falling in love again.

4. If you could co-author with any author, past or present, who would you choose?
I’m actually planning to co-author with bestselling author Adriana Gonzalez, she is incredible!! I wish someday to work with my talented friend Priyam and I would also love to co-write with Veronica Roth, she seems like so much fun.

5. Have you always wanted to write or did it come to you "later in life"?
Always! Although my specialty is screenwriting, it wasn’t until two years ago when I decided to write a book.

Author Bio:
Major geek by day, hermit writer by night! Love books, sugar gliders and everything that comes in a delicious taco.

I’m the author of the YA fantasy  series, Seasons Within

I spend my time writing,  planning on  writing, reading, drinking coffee like there was no tomorrow, MMA and chilling with my friends and loved ones.

Nelumbo Nucifera by Cristina Slough

Title: Nelumbo Nucifera
Author: Cristina Slough
Genre: Adult, Psychological Thriller
Release Date: January 24, 2017
Summary:
On the surface, Gaby Parker has it all; however, behind closed doors, is a woman who lives in constant fear of the man who was supposed to love her: her husband, Kyle. Beaten, desperate, and broken, Gaby realizes the only way to escape from her violent husband is to kill herself — on paper. Gaby is dead, and Riley Locklin is born, residing in the tranquil coastal town of Chesswick Bay Montauk where she hopes to start over and meets a man who shows her bruises aren’t kisses.

Meanwhile, back home, Kyle is doing everything in his power to prove Gaby isn’t dead.

But…police find her burnt-out car and remains?

Kyle isn’t buying it; he knows she’s still alive. He launches his own full investigation to find his wife — and he’ll stop at nothing to claim her back. A female Detective assigned to his wife’s case doesn’t like him very much after discovering a domestic violence report – scorned by the history of her mother’s domestic abuse, she’s determined to send Kyle down for his wife’s murder.

And then he finds her. Will Gaby finally take a stand?

Yellow tape still concealed Burbank Woods. The fresh woodland had been engulfed in a misty grey fog, the road stained in thick black soot with fractured pieces of glass that glistened in the early morning sunlight on the morning the car was found. Even days later the smell of burnt rubber and plastic hung in the air. The debris remaining of the mangled wreck made it tough to identify a possible victim—until one of the police officers discovered a licence plate, crumpled like a scrunched up piece of paper, but not too damaged that the numbers and letters couldn’t be read. After a simple enquiry, it was discovered that the car was registered to Mrs. Gabriela Parker, a woman who had been reported missing by her husband just a few short hours before. This wasn’t just an accident. Isla could feel it, taste it, smell it; there was so much more to this. From across the room, Isla saw him—the man she was sure was responsible for his wife’s disappearance. She knew that there was much more to this than what the sonofabitch was letting on. His arrogance infuriated her. He had a certain swagger in his walk, making a statement with every step.

“What the fuck is he doing here already?”

“Parker’s lawyer got the conference moved forward. They want optimum viewing time. People want to hear a statement from the husband,” Hardy answered, lifting a steaming polystyrene cup to his lips, gently blowing the steam before he took a loud sip.

“Of course they do. It just proves he’s even more of a slick sonofabitch. I wonder what kind of cock and bull sob story he is going to invent. This should be good.” Isla grabbed a notebook and a pen and headed across to the growing crowd. Kyle was surrounded by hungry journalists. She pushed her slender body through the sea of people.

“It’s almost time,” a PR woman shouted.

“It’s not a bad turn-out,” Hardy said to Isla.

“Middle-class white woman, wife to a powerful investment banker goes missing, a body that we can’t identify, yet. Of course it was going to be a good turn-out. These scum suckers live for the drama, don’t they?” Isla had a love/hate relationship with the press. It annoyed her how involved they became. They acted as if they, themselves, were cops. But, they also had their uses too.

Kyle’s dark hair was slicked back. He was dressed in business casual blues; he walked into the conference room. Isla could see the awaiting journalists perk up when he came in, nudging one another, pointing. Isla could lip read Marsha Henley’s lips. “That’s him.” Marsha Henley was a pit bull of a journalist. If there was blood, she could smell it for miles off. Over the years she and Isla had locked horns, but now they had reached a level of respect for one another—two women in a man’s world, fighting for truth and justice. The PR woman came into view again; she placed a cardboard poster of Gaby Parker on an easel. The blown up picture of Mrs Gabriela Parker showed a beautiful woman with flawless skin, full lips and dark chocolate eyes. She had a thick main of perfectly groomed crimson red hair that framed her stunning features. In the picture she was smiling. But it was a smile that Isla knew wasn’t real. She called it the “Stepford smile.” It was forced—nothing but a show. Behind that smile was a woman that was dying inside. The old clichΓ© was true: Eyes are the windows to the soul.

Lips may do the talkin’ but eyes do the tellin’.” That is what Isla’s mother had always said, and it was a truth that Isla had lived by. Even before she became a cop.

As soon as Kyle climbed onto the platform and took a seat on an aluminium chair, the room started to illuminate with cameras as they flashed repetitively. The scuffle of feet scraping against the floor and the constant clicking sound filled the room. Isla folded her arms across her body and kept her gaze on Kyle.

Let the world see what a great showman you really are.

Katie is now thriving – she’s been able to rebuild her life, returning to work, getting married and having her first child. But life isn't without struggles. For burns survivors the suffering continues long after the injuries.  Katie’s Foundation transforms the lives from ones of simply surviving, to thriving - whatever that may mean for them.

In buying this book, you’ve been part of changing everything for someone who may have felt they had nothing. Here’s what the proceeds will fund.

  • Events across the UK, run by trained Peer Supporters, which give beneficiaries the chance to meet others in similar circumstances and to share experiences.  Here’s what one attendee said about it: “Last year I endured 85% burns to my face and body. Overnight the person I knew was gone. I thought “what is the point in me being here anymore?”I attended a weekend with other burn survivors.  I learned that I was not alone! I was amazed at the attendees’ strength, courage and confidence. My life wasn't over. I am just different now. If it wasn't for that weekend away, I don't know if I'd still be here today.”

  • Advice to people who are living with burns and scars, often enabling free, ongoing, access to life-changing treatments such as medical tattooing and hair replacement.

  • Sharing our knowledge and insight through activities.  Hosting workshops such as Scar Academy UK, attended by professionals ranging from physiotherapists, to nurses working in UK burns healthcare. Other charities and organisations in the UK are supported by us and we contribute towards the national strategy of burns rehabilitation and scar management.

We are closer than ever to accomplishing Katie’s aim to set up specialist residential rehabilitation, with the best partners, giving a pioneering service.  We have so much more to do – and we treasure your support in achieving our vision.

Friendship, and soon romance, blooms. The tower captive eagerly gives his loving innocence to his brave rescuer, which sends the strict and reclusive Gotham into a frenzy of jealous rage. With Prin, Lucci gets a taste of real life, and he wants more. Together, the young men must face Gotham’s ruthlessness and pay the price of liberating Lucci.

Hello, and thank you for welcoming me to your blog today to celebrate the release of In A Gilded Cage by Mia Kerick. I am a writer, but I am also an avid reader. Here’s a short interview about my book-buying habits.

Readers buy books because of the cover, the blurb, as well as other reasons.

Let’s start with the book cover.

Mia, what attracts you about a book cover?
First of all, I pretty much strictly read romance, which greatly narrows the field. And an awesome book cover definitely attracts me, I won’t deny that fact. The first thing I look for on a cover is a face. I know that the trend seems to be moving away from using a face and instead using simply written words or a picture, but I still like the humanity of a face. In fact, I used to want the faces of both main characters so I could better picture them together, but if the single face is expressive enough, I’m fine with that. Here are some covers with faces that strike me:

I often go for black and white, sometimes with just a bit of color, as I find it dramatic. Here are a few more book covers I find appealing:

How much importance do you put on a book blurb?
I will not buy a book until I have read the blurb. And what makes an effective blurb? Believe me, as an author I suffer over this question all the time, as I want my own books to sell well. I will say that I like it to start with something a little bit catchy, and then tell me exactly what I am going to get without spoilers. I also like it when a blurb ends with a question. It makes me think.

Do reviews factor in to your decision to purchase a book?
I look at reviews, too. Usually I start with the Amazon reviews because they are so convenient to where I shop. If I still want more information, I sometimes go to Goodreads. And when I really like a book, I will look on Amazon at the list below on the book’s page that says people who read this book also purchased… Very often these book recommendations work well for me.

Are there other reasons you buy and read a book?
Finally, although I am pressed for time because I write so much, I try to read a book by my various author friends. Believe me, my intentions to read the books of all the authors I know are good, but time is a constraint.

This is no scientific method to choose books, but it is what I do, and it works!! I have literally thousands of books I love on my Kindle and in all corners of my house!

I hope you add this book to your collection!

Author Bio:
Mia Kerick is the mother of four exceptional children—all named after saints—and five nonpedigreed cats—all named after the next best thing to saints, Boston Red Sox players. Her husband of twenty years has been told by many that he has the patience of Job, but don’t ask Mia about that, as it is a sensitive subject.

Mia focuses her stories on the emotional growth of troubled young men and their relationships, and she believes that sex has a place in a love story, but not until it is firmly established as a love story. As a teen, Mia filled spiral-bound notebooks with romantic tales of tortured heroes (most of whom happened to strongly resemble lead vocalists of 1980s big-hair bands) and stuffed them under her mattress for safekeeping. She is thankful to Dreamspinner Press for providing her with an alternate place to stash her stories.

Mia is proud of her involvement with the Human Rights Campaign and cheers for each and every victory made in the name of marital equality. Her only major regret: never having taken typing or computer class in school, destining her to a life consumed with two-fingered pecking and constant prayer to the Gods of Technology.
