Sunday's Short Stack: Even in the Grave by LJ Hamlin

Summary:
A trio of spooky shorts…

In A Song of the Sea, Jared is working on a new piano piece and unexpectedly draws the attention of a beautiful siren…

Even in the Grave, All is Not Lost is the story of Edgar, detective and psychic, brought in to consult on a strange serial killer who steals victims' hearts, and the handsome officer assigned to assist him.

And in Shotguns and Sawdust, Greg finds himself utterly captivated by a demon hunter, and determined to find out if the interest is mutual—and he doesn't care the man is mute, or about the warning from his boss.

Even in the Grave is a delightful little gem of three spooky shorts that may be short on pages but long on story.   From sirens to serial killers to demons, there is a lot packed into so few pages.  I won't speak to the individual plots of the shorts but I will say that I think my favorite is A Song of the Sea but all three are absolutely brilliant.  It seems odd to say delightful when the book has "grave" in the title but I really can't think of a better word to sum this collection up.

Would some of the shorts been better had they been longer? Sure.  However, I found the shortness of each tale lets the reader's imagination heighten the experience and in my opinion, less can go a long way when it comes to creepy.  Don't get me wrong, I love a well written full length novel to get my creepified senses jumping but sometimes all you need is the hints and touches of the "out there" element to keep you on the edge of your seat and that is exactly what LJ Hamlin has done with Even in the Grave.  As I've said, this is a delightful addition to my paranormal shelf.

A Song of the Sea
Moving to a small house on the beach was the best decision Jared Grayson had ever made for so many reasons, but so far his favourite is being able to open his window and smell the ocean.

It’s early when he goes into his music room the first Monday after moving into his new home. He’d chosen a room with big windows, and put his piano facing them so he could see the sand and surf while he practiced. There are still boxes around the room, and he should unpack and start organising, but instead he opens the window to let in the crisp dawn scent and goes to sit at his piano. He’s been composing a new piece since he arrived that he thinks will start off his next album perfectly.

Jared makes his living as a musician. He plays several classical instruments, and his music has been used in advertisements, TV shows and movies. He plays concerts to paying audiences, and he loves that, but he loves this in a different way.

He’s sitting at the piano, barefoot and in a pair of striped pyjama pants, matching top and a large, cream-colored knit cardigan. The air is crisp and chilly in a way it only gets on a clear morning. He loves it and is so happy he lives here now.

The notes come naturally to his fingers, and he starts slowly playing a new piece he’s been working on. He’s almost lost in the music when something makes him look up. He’s not sure what, but that’s when he sees someone, or maybe something, standing at his window. This part of the beach is fenced off, but Jared isn’t sure what he’s looking at is human.

The figure is small, short, with a bluish green tint to his skin. He has windswept, wet blue hair and slashes on his neck that look like gills, but he seems to have no problem breathing on land. Jared’s hands are still on the piano as he stares in shock.

“Don’t stop, please. I didn’t mean to frighten you,” the man says in oddly accented English. He’s wearing a pair of roughly handmade shorts, and nothing else.

“Who are you?” Jared asks. He can’t see any weapons, but the man-like creature looks like it has very sharp nails on its delicate, webbed hands. Some might ask what it was first, and Jared doesn’t know why he doesn’t. He just finds he wants to know his name.

“I’m Silver. Who are you?” Silver moves, and Jared’s a little scared until he sees that Silver’s just coming to sit on the window ledge, his legs inside, showing more of that strange skin, and webbed toes with sharp toenails. He seems pleased that Jared asked his name.

“Jared.” Part of him is wondering if he’s seeing things. He hasn’t drunk any alcohol, and he doesn’t take any drugs beyond an inhaler for asthma and one pill med for migraines. He doesn’t think either of those would start causing hallucinations.

He can think of three options: one, he’s been drugged without his knowledge; two, he’s having some kind of mental break with reality; or three, Silver is real.

“Humans have strange names, though I suppose you find ours strange, too,” Silver says, and his voice sounds like music. It has Jared itching to start playing.

“You know I’m a human. What are you?” Jared asks, hoping the question doesn’t anger Silver.

“I’m a siren. Humans have written stories about us, most unflattering, saying we causes ships to crash and draw men to their death. We don’t do that,” Silver says firmly.

“I’m sorry people judge you like that,” Jared says.

“Don’t worry. We all get judged unfairly at times. I hear things about humans that are not nice at all. You hurt your own kind. You kill for fun. I will never understand that.” Silver looks at Jared sadly, and he has large, jade-green eyes, the iris thicker than a human’s.

“People are complicated. Do sirens not fight?” Jared asks.

“Disputes go to the council to be fixed. Fighting is prohibited, and any siren who kills another will be banished from the sea,” Silver says softly.

“That’s certainly more efficient,” Jared says, wondering where a siren could be banished to if it looked anything like Silver. “Do you live in the sea?”

“Most of the time. But we can visit the land and like to sunbathe on the rocks. It’s nice to be warm. The sea can get cold, even for us.” Silver smiles, revealing teeth that are straight but slightly sharp looking. Silver stands up. “Are you afraid of me?”

“Should I be?” Jared asks, because he’s not afraid really, more nervous. He’s never faced a siren before. He didn’t even know they were a real thing.

“No, we don’t harm humans. We try to warn you about the rocks in the sea, but men never listen. It makes me sad. We try to save those we can. The music you were making, does it have a name?” Silver comes slowly forward as he talks, until he’s at the other side of the low piano.

“No, not yet. I’m still composing and refining it,” Jared replies.

“I heard it from the ocean. It called to me,” Silver says softly.

Jared smiles. “You like it?”

“Yes, it’s beautiful. I meant only to listen, not be seen, but I came too close.” Silver sighs.

“I understand the pull of music. I’d follow it anywhere, too.”

“Will you play more for me?” Silver asks, looking shy, like maybe he’s not used to getting what he wants.

“The same tune?” Jared is happy to play for most people, and it’s not every day he gets a chance to play for a siren from the sea.

Saturday's Series Spotlight: Hexworld by Jordan L Hawk Part 2

A Christmas Hex #2.5
Summary:
Roland knows he will never find love. Everyone views wolf familiars like himself as dangerous beasts, unable to rein in their savage impulses. He’s resigned himself to his fate—or so he thinks, until he meets the dashing Augustus Cao. His witch.

Gus is on the trail of a gang of thieves, and Roland holds an important clue. Even though they can never bond, Roland can’t pass up the opportunity to spend a night with his witch.

Can Roland conceal his secret, while helping Gus catch the thieves? Or will the handsome detective be the one to steal his heart?

Hexslayer #3
Summary:
Horse shifter Nick has one rule: never trust a witch.

Nick has devoted his life to making his saloon a safe haven for the feral familiars of New York. So when a brutal killer slaughters a feral under his protection, Nick has no choice but to try and catch the murderer. Even if that means bonding with a handsome Irish witch.

Officer Jamie MacDougal came back from the war in Cuba missing part of a leg and most of his heart. After his former lover becomes one of the killer’s victims, Jamie will do anything to solve the case.

Nick comes to Jamie with a proposal: after making a temporary bond, they will work together to stop the murders. Once the killer is caught, they walk away and never see one another again.

It sounds simple enough. But the passion that flares between the two men won’t be so easily extinguished. And if Nick can’t learn to trust his witch, he stands to lose everything—including his life.

Wild Wild Hex #3.5
Summary:
Can a lawman witch find love with an outlaw familiar?

When Enoch runs afoul of the murderous Bone Gang, he and Rafael strike a deal to take down the gang together. As lawman and outlaw work together, Enoch soon realizes the next thing the gentleman bandit steals will be his heart.

A Christmas Hex #2.5
Original Review November 2016:
A great little Hexworld standalone novella to kick off my holiday reading season.  A Christmas Hex may not have the Metropolitan Witch Police but it's no less of a little mystery with private investigator Gus and his would-be wolf familiar Roland.  Not a lot I can say without spoilers but I will say I loved it and it's a great addition to the Hexworld universe.

Hexslayer #3
Original Review October 2017:
Nick has spent his life hating witches, or at the very least not trusting them, not even his brother's witch.  His life's mission is to protect familiars, specifically feral familiars.  Jamie McDougal, one of Roosevelt's Rough Riders, is a witch without a familiar and an uncle who's views on familiars are not the same as Jamie's.  When familiars are being viciously killed, Nick decides he has to work with Jamie to stop the murderer but what happens once the case is solved?  Will Nick be able to let Jamie go and return to his anti-witch stand?

I knew we would eventually get a book in this series about Nick and to be honest I wasn't really looking forward to it.  I liked his need for freedom but his anti-witch stance always grated on me a bit and I was afraid I wouldn't be able to like him as a main character.  Its not that I felt he was irredeemable, he hadn't gone that far whenever he appeared in previous installments but I just wasn't sure I'd be ready to cheer him on.  Well! I'm adult enough to admit when I'm wrong and was I ever wrong! Nick was fun, frustrating, enjoyable, irritating, and yes he still grated on my nerves at times but I most definitely wanted to see him happy.

As for Jamie, well what's not to like?  He is a man with a heart that is "Grinch after finding Christmas spirit" big who wants to find the killer and find happiness all at the same time.  It's easy to say that Nick doesn't deserve someone like Jamie but truth is, they are perfect for each other.  Now, that's not to say everything is smooth sailing for the pair just because I found them perfect for each other, quite the opposite really.  Ms. Hawk really puts her couples through the wringer and Nick and Jamie are no different, most of the time that wringer is Nick but who can blame him considering the feelings he's been holding on to for so many years.

As for the killings, well as usual I don't do spoilers so I won't touch on that aspect of the story too much other than to say I was completely hooked from beginning to end.  Even without Nick and Jamie, Hexslayer would have had me on the edge of my seat with just the mystery alone.  Thankfully, we do have Nick and Jamie so once again Jordan L Hawk has brought us into a world of magic, mystery, mayhem, and just the right amount of mushiness to make this a perfect paranormal package fitting for this time of year.  However, if you don't have the time or opportunity to dive in now, you will be enthralled whenever you do give it a go because even though October is my favorite month to read all things weird and out there, I'll be reading this series whenever the author decides to give us another entry.  Simply put, Hexslayer and the whole Hexworld universe, takes us on an amazing journey of the magic most of us loved as children and gives it an adult flair that lets us delve back into the "what ifs" and "could bes" that we tend to forget as we grow older.  Just brilliant fun from beginning to end.

Wild Wild Hex #3.5
Original Review November 2017:
The author has added the tagline on the front of the book "A Hexworld Short Story" but whether you label it short, novella, or novel is not the point.  To me Wild Wild Hex is a story, plain and simple, because when the words on the page fill the reader with so much, well "WOW" comes to mind, then the length(or lack thereof) doesn't matter.  Now I will say that Wild Wild Hex may not be a continuation of the main focus of the Hexworld Jordan L Hawk has created but it definitely fits the Hex universe and who knows, maybe we'll see Hexas Ranger Enoch Bright and his familiar Rafael again some day.

If you've never read any of the entries to the author's Hexworld, you can still read Wild Wild Hex and not really be lost but I think some of the witch/familiar bonding elements would be better understood if read in order but its certainly not necessary.  Personally, I can't imagine not having read the series so for me its a must but that's just me.

Enoch and Rafael may fall into what some might call the clichΓ© trope of lawman/outlaw as well as as Rafael being a Robin Hood type figure but in my opinion there is nothing clichΓ© about this pairing.  Is the bond between these two a little rushed? Perhaps but remember it is a short story and you have to expect that but also when a witch and their familiar find each other, the bond is pretty instantaneous even when they fight it, that connection is still there from the getgo.

So, I'm just going to say that whether we see more of Enoch and Rafael in the future doesn't matter because they leave a lasting impression in their tale.  Their journey, though short in length, is packed to the brim and overflowing with passion, mystery, drama, and wrapped together with just the right amount of "out there" to make this a must read.  Simply put: Jordan L Hawk has done it again.  Seriously, how can one woman have so many creative universes floating around in her brain?  If you're a fan of paranormal, of mystery, well of a great story than Wild Wild Hex is a must.

Audiobook Tour: Austin by Felice Stevens

Genre: M/M Romance
Narrator: Kale Williams
Audiobook Release Date: August 29, 2018
ebook Release Date: April 5, 2018
Cover Design: Reese Dante
Summary:
I can make it by myself. The only rules I follow are my own. Love? I learned that lesson the hard and painful way—it wasn’t right for me. Sure, sometimes it gets lonely, and I wish I had a man to hold. Who’d love me. Want me. Treat me with respect. Yeah, I dance in a club, but that doesn’t mean I’m easy. Or a fool. So you, sitting in the back, watching me? I know what you want. You want me. In your bed. Under you. But I say no. It doesn’t matter how many presents you give me.

I’m not falling for you. I know who you are. But you don’t know me. You don’t know Austin.

“Stop mooning over him, Austin. He’s taken.”

I gave my boss Tyler one last look from beneath the dark curls hanging in my eyes and let out a sigh as melancholy as I felt. “Don’t I know it. Look at them. The perfect couple. And Marcus never takes his eyes off Ty. I wouldn’t either if he were my man.”

Frankie Marone, the other dance instructor and my best friend, poked me in the side. “And you know Marcus hates it when you drool over Ty. You told me that yourself. So let’s finish up here and get over to the club.” Frankie’s brown eyes sparkled. “It’s margarita night, and you know that means big tips for us. Especially you, when you’re Mr. Tall, Dark, and Doesn’t Ever Speak shows up.”

We gathered our bags and went to change in the locker room Tyler had built in the back of the dance studio. I ran a critical eye over myself in the mirror, poofed out my curls a bit, then slicked on a little lip gloss. “Do you think I need eyeliner?”

“Girl, you know that man likes you done up. Here, take mine.” Frankie handed me his eyeliner, and I used it around the corners of my eyes, giving them a cat’s-eye tilt at the edge. “Didn’t he send you some sexy things to wear after the last time you danced for him?”

Heat crept up my face at the memory of the silky jockstrap and scented oils the mysterious stranger had sent me backstage at Man Up, the club where Frankie and I usually danced most nights. It wasn’t what I wanted to do with my life, but the money was great, and I did what I could to get by.

I gave Frankie back the eyeliner. “Here. And yeah, I dunno. He probably won’t show.”

“But you’re wearing it just in case he does, right?”

I bit my lip and nodded, then pulled down my leggings to reveal a peek of red silky material lined with crystals.

“Jesus, that’s hot. And expensive, I bet.”

“I know.” After the package had arrived, I looked up the jock online and found it at a boutique in Chelsea specializing in high-end menswear. “It’s a hundred bucks.”

“Holy shit.” Frankie’s jaw dropped. “He wants you.”

It had turned chilly outside, and I tugged on my fur-topped boots. “I don’t mind a little snuggle here and there, and I’m not against saying a special thank-you with a kiss, but there’s a limit. You know what I mean.”

Frankie zipped up his jacket and pulled his furry hood over his head. “If he wants to be your sugar daddy, you tell him yes. Get yourself set up good with a nice place and a bank account. I would. You don’t need to keep shaking your ass for those guys always grabbing your junk.”

“I’m not a whore, Frankie. I’m not selling myself. Right now, I love dancing and teaching the kids, but I have plans. And maybe someday, in the future, a real boyfriend.”

“And you’re a great dancer. The kids love you.” Frankie shrugged as we walked back into the studio in time to see Marcus kissing Tyler with a passion I’d never experienced. It made my heart and my dick throb. “And as for boyfriends, they’re nothing but trouble.”

Author Bio:
Felice Stevens has always been a romantic at heart. While life is tough, she believes there is a happy ending for everyone. She started reading traditional historical romances as a teenager, then life and law school got in the way. It wasn't until she picked up a copy of Bertrice Small and became swept away to Queen Elizabeth's court that her interest in romance novels was renewed.

But somewhere along the way, her reading shifted to stories of men falling in love. Once she picked up her first gay romance, she became so enamored of the character-driven stories and the overwhelming emotion there was no turning back.

Felice lives in New York City with her husband and two children. Her day begins with a lot of caffeine and ends with a glass or two of red wine. Although she practices law, she daydreams of a time when she can sit by a beach and write beautiful stories of men falling in love. Although there is bound to be some angst along the way, a Happily Ever After is always guaranteed.

πŸ“˜πŸŽ₯Friday's Film AdaptationπŸŽ₯πŸ“˜: The Other by Thomas Tryon

Summary:
Holland and Niles Perry are identical thirteen-year-old twins. They are close, close enough, almost, to read each other’s thoughts, but they couldn’t be more different. Holland is bold and mischievous, a bad influence, while Niles is kind and eager to please, the sort of boy who makes parents proud. The Perrys live in the bucolic New England town their family settled centuries ago, and as it happens, the extended clan has gathered at its ancestral farm this summer to mourn the death of the twins’ father in a most unfortunate accident. Mrs. Perry still hasn’t recovered from the shock of her husband’s gruesome end and stays sequestered in her room, leaving her sons to roam free. As the summer goes on, though, and Holland’s pranks become increasingly sinister, Niles finds he can no longer make excuses for his brother’s actions.

Thomas Tryon’s best-selling novel about a homegrown monster is an eerie examination of the darkness that dwells within everyone. It is a landmark of psychological horror that is a worthy descendent of the books of James Hogg, Robert Louis Stevenson, Shirley Jackson, and Patricia Highsmith.

Release Blitz: Gateway to Love by Sarah Hadley Brook

Title: Gateway to Love
Author: Sarah Hadley Brook
Series: States of Love
Genre: M/M Romance
Release Date: October 19, 2018
Publisher: Dreamspinner Press
Summary:
Ten days to finally make the leap from friends to lovers….

Craig and Mitchell have been friends for years, but each of them reached a point where that camaraderie became… more. Mitchell’s kept his feelings close to his chest. So has Craig, but now that they’ve graduated from UMKC, he knows it’s his last chance to show Mitchell they’re meant to be before their careers take them to opposite sides of the country.

He insists they can’t leave Missouri behind without one last adventure. Mitchell agrees to a road trip to visit all the touristy spots and say goodbye to their home state.

As they spend their days and nights together, buried feelings rise to the surface and hope blossoms. When their journey ends with a dance beneath the Branson stars, will they find love and a future together at the end of the road?

THE SOUND of a horn jolted Mitch from a sound sleep, and he blinked his eyes for a moment, staring out the window at the busy highway.

“Sorry. Some idiot guy almost hit us. I had to lay on the horn,” Craig explained.

Mitch straightened himself in his seat and rubbed his eyes. “No worries. Sorry I fell asleep.”

Craig grinned at him. “You should be. I’ve had to listen to your snoring for almost two hours.”

“Hey, I don’t snore. You do, but I don’t,” Mitch said emphatically.

Craig snorted. “Whatever. I can hear you through the wall at night.”

“I don’t snore,” Mitch reiterated, and frowned when Craig chuckled. Then he started feeling bad about sleeping so long. “Want me to take a turn at the wheel?”

“Nah. Maybe when we stop for lunch? Although, we’ll probably be in Hannibal before then. We’ve only got about an hour and forty-five minutes left, give or take.”

Mitch nodded and checked his phone, but he couldn’t help watching his best friend out of the corner of his eye. Even after knowing him for four years, Mitch was still blown away by the reaction he felt whenever he looked at Craig. He’d certainly never forgotten the first day they met. It was imprinted on his brain forever.

That first day at Longview Community College had been brutal. He’d had to spend two hours in the admissions office because when he’d shown up for his first class, the professor didn’t have him listed. By the time his schedule was corrected, he’d missed two classes and was nearly late to his third.

He’d slid into an empty seat near the door just as the teacher turned around from the whiteboard. Someone next to him giggled and he glanced over to see the cutest boy he’d ever laid eyes on. Mitch had felt dumbstruck as his cheeks heated in reaction.

“Close call,” the kid had whispered with a nod toward the teacher. “I heard she doesn’t put up with latecomers.”

Mitch pulled himself together and smiled.

It wasn’t until class was over that they were able to talk.

“I’m Mitchell Moon,” he’d offered, as the guy rose from his desk. “Everyone calls me Mitch, though.”

Craig had beamed at him, his blue eyes sparkling a little as he leaned down until their faces were only inches apart. “Hi, Mitchell,” he said with a wink. “My name’s Craig Pruitt.”

And that was that—they became instant friends, bonding over video games, movies, and their love of Star Trek. It was the kind of friendship only found once in a lifetime. Mitch had come out to Craig within the first week of meeting him and his friend hadn’t even blinked.

There was only one problem with their friendship—Mitch had never been able to shake the attraction he felt for Craig. And over the years, as they earned their associate’s degrees from Longview and moved on to UMKC, their bond grew and his feelings for Craig only strengthened.

When Craig had confided in him that he thought he was bisexual their sophomore year, Mitch’s hopes had been raised, but by that time he was firmly planted in the friend zone. So he did what a best friend should—he supported Craig as he came to terms with things and accepted who he was. He’d admitted that he’d had a crush on a guy in high school, but it ran its course and he never acted on it. As far as Mitch knew, Craig had only dated two guys since then, nothing panning out toward a full-time relationship, though. But he’d had his share of casual hookups with men. Craig had gone a little wild when he’d first come out as bisexual, but had calmed down over the years. In fact, Mitch couldn’t remember him even going on a date during their senior year.

He’d seen the types of men Craig seemed to be attracted to, and they were nothing like Mitch, so he’d tucked his feelings away again and told himself not to go there anymore. It was an ongoing internal battle, but most of the time, he had a handle on it.

This last year of college, they’d found a cheap two-bedroom apartment near campus and moved in that summer. Sharing a small space with the man of his dreams had been hard. Especially when Craig often walked around their place wearing only a pair of boxers.

Mitch was honest enough to admit he’d fantasized about Craig too many times to count and would probably continue to do so long after he’d moved. Maybe that’s how it always was with a first love or major crush.

In his heart, he knew being apart would be good for them. Well, at least it would be for Mitch. Maybe he could finally go out with someone without constantly comparing him to Craig. But in the meantime, he continued to fight the attraction. The desire. The love. Because that’s what it had turned into. Love. Over the years, the longing, the emotional connection he felt with Craig, it had all turned to love. He wasn’t even sure when it had happened, but there was no denying Mitch was in love with his best friend.

And just when he was close to being free, there they were. One last hurrah before moving out of state. One last adventure with Craig.

What was he going to do without him? He turned to stare out the window, his eyes blind to the passing scenery. All he could see was a future without Craig, and it was shrouded in gray. Mitch was so tired of fighting his feelings. He chuckled to himself. He was the stereotypical guy in love with his best friend. He knew it was useless, but if Craig had asked him to go to California with him, Mitch would have dropped everything and followed him out west. He knew how pathetic that sounded, but when it came to Craig, Mitch didn’t care what others might think.

About an hour later, Craig pulled over to a gas station to fuel up and grab some snacks. Mitch used the disgusting bathroom, holding his breath as he did his business, quickly washed up, and made his way into the convenience store.

Craig was at the counter paying and held up a bag of items.

“I’m just going to get a drink,” Mitch told him as he walked past Craig. His friend grabbed his arm, wrapping his fingers around his wrist.

“I already got you your Dr Pepper,” he told Mitch with a smile. “And your Kit Kat.”

Mitch wanted to respond. Wanted to say thank you. But all he could do was revel in the sensation of Craig’s touch. Electricity prickled his skin, skittering through him.

“Mitchell?” Craig’s voice was low. He sounded worried.

“Sorry. Just… forgot what I was going to say,” he lied, knowing he sounded lame. He noticed Craig hadn’t let go of his wrist and raised his eyes to meet his friend’s gaze. Mitch was surprised at the intensity. The large black pupils. The flushed cheeks. “I-I’m… fine. Thanks for grabbing some things for me.”

Craig studied him, looking like he wanted to say something, but finally let Mitch go and they walked back out to the car and settled in.

“Less than an hour left,” Craig announced.

Mitch tried to tamp down his excitement, but it was difficult. He’d always wanted to visit Hannibal. He’d read all of Mark Twain’s stories, and knowing he was from Missouri had encouraged him when he’d dreamed about becoming a writer.

Graduating with a Bachelor of Arts in English had put him closer to that dream. Being hired to work on a grassroots website devoted to getting people registered to vote had been exciting and he was looking forward to starting next month. He was less excited about the magazine internship. West Virginia tourism was definitely not something he remotely cared about. He’d only taken it because his sister, Samantha, lived in West Virginia, where the magazine was headquartered, and she had helped him get the interview. Plus he could stay with her until he got a feel for the area. Samantha was also providing him with apartment information, so he would have several to check out when he moved.

The magazine hadn’t been in his original plans. He’d wanted to stay in Kansas City after graduation and work on his writing. His dream was to become a published author. Mitch lived to write, creating fantasy worlds and bringing characters to life. Over the years, he’d managed to put some money away, through his work at the coffee shop. Add what he’d been given as graduation gifts from his mother, his sister, and various relatives, and he was confident he could afford to give the writing thing a try for a while—as long as he had a roommate and a part-time job.

When Craig announced he’d taken a job in California, working for a nonprofit that helped homeless teens, Mitch’s plans took a nosedive. While he’d been proud of Craig, the idea of staying in Kansas City without him was depressing. If he was going to start a new chapter in his life and really get over Craig, staying where he’d be constantly reminded of their times together was out of the question. Writing would have to take a back seat to making a living. Mitch was trying to be an adult and make responsible choices—decisions that would help him move forward.

Maybe a new start in a new city would help him finally find a man that he could be in a real relationship with.

He just had to survive this trip without telling his best friend the truth he’d hidden for years.

Author Bio:
Sarah Hadley Brook lives smack-dab in the middle of the Heartland and is the mother of two wonderful young men, as well as two cats. During the day, she works in the nonprofit world, but reserves evenings for her hobby-turned-passion of writing, letting the characters she conjures in her mind take the lead and show her where the story will go. When not working or writing, she can be found reading, working on dollhouses, trying her hand at new recipes, or watching old movies and musicals. In her ideal world, Christmas would come at least twice a year, Rock Hudson and Doris Day would have costarred in more than three movies, and chocolate would be a daily necessity. She dreams of traveling to Scotland some day and visiting the places her ancestors lived. Sarah believes in “Happily Ever After” and strives to ensure her characters find their own happiness in love and life.
