Before Syn can even understand why, he’s overcome with feelings he barely recognizes: passion, yearning, craving. And if the dark, lustful gazes are anything to go by, Furious might be feeling the same things for him.

Just two things need to happen before Syn and Furi can give each other what’s been missing from their lives for so long... Syn needs to find the evidence that proves Furi’s innocence of murder, as well as protect him from a past that refuses to let go.

God, Day, Ronowski, and Johnson are still as entertaining as ever...

Original ebook Review August 2015:
New to the narcotics squad, Syn may not think so but he fits in perfectly.  When he meets the bartender, Furi things really get kicked up a notch.  A great follow-up to Nothing Special and the boys we fell in love with are back and offer great support and leadership when needed.  Syn and Furi eventually learn that being part of or involved with the Atlanta Narcotics Task Force isn't just a job, it's a family.

RATING:

Syn paid his tab for the one beer and left the pub. Somehow making love in an elevator didn’t appeal to him anymore. If he was being honest, women in general rarely did. He’d always felt they were more of a distraction than anything and he’d had very little time for distractions while focusing on his career. Syn looked up and down the street, about to cross to his building when a familiar figure caught his eye just a half-block up.

Furious. That’s what the man in the pub had called him. Interesting name.

Syn detoured and headed in that direction. His body completely ignoring what his brain was screaming. He just looks like him … this is not the same. Syn walked slowly, Furious wasn’t going anywhere since he appeared to be waiting for the bus. He watched a billow of smoke emerge from full, pink lips. Smoking. It was a filthy habit, but somehow, Furious made it look kind of hot. Syn was just a few feet away and saw that Furious had ear buds in, his hands tucked into the pockets of his jacket, head hanging down and all that hair falling over his beautiful face.

Beautiful face. Syn watched the man remove the cigarette from his lips.

“Uh oh. Stranger danger.”

Syn looked behind him but no one was there.

“I mean you. You just gonna stand there and stare, man?” Furious raised his head and turned slowly, pinning Syn with a hot glance.

“Name’s –”

“Yeah. I know your name, you told me already.” Furious cut him off. “Your cologne will give you away every time.”

Syn stepped a little closer. “Does it smell that bad?”

“Nope. Smells that good,” he said on an exhale of smoke.

Monday Morning's Menu: Just Say When by EM Lindsey

Summary:
When you cross an award winning chef with overwhelming imposter syndrome with a charismatic YouTube who lives to make the arrogant humble, it will either end in disaster, or with one of them bent over a table. Enzo isn't quite sure which one he wants to happen after agreeing to appear on Tristian's show for a Valentine's special, but he knows once he's met the enthusiastic blind man who wants to prove Enzo's unworth in his own kitchen, his life will never be the same.

EM Lindsey is a new-to-me author and I can say without a doubt this will not be my only EM Lindsey story to cross my reading radar.  Just Say When is a lovely Valentine short that is full of sweet, sass, and heat.  The idea of a popular chef humbling himself on a YouTube channel show to try an appease his restaurant fans after sticking his foot in is immensely pleasing.  But there is so much more to Enzo than first impressions.  As for Tristan, the YouTube channel host, well he too is more than what Enzo expects.  On the surface their only shared interest is food and their apparent hatred for Valentine's Day but once Enzo lets Tristan in, the obvious sexual attraction is only the beginning.  The epilogue gives us a look at the men's future and if we're real super uber nice maybe the author will let us see one of their future Christmases tooπŸ˜‰πŸ˜‰.  As I said, Just Say When is my first EM Lindsey story and what a short but perfect introduction.  Definitely going on my authors-to-watch list.

RATING:

Chapter One
“… and a fifteen top who wants to come in at seven. They’re requesting to order the pre fixe menu but they’d like a couple of changes because one of the members of the party has…”

“No.” It had been years since Enzo bothered with tact in his kitchen. He was always a control freak, set in his ways, a bit of an asshole. But that was why he did what he did for a living. “I’m not serving it early. It’s bad enough I’m serving it at all.”

Paul, his long-time kitchen manager— a man who would absolutely be sanctified upon his death— let out only the smallest sigh. “You have to work with me here. You knew that people were going to push it. I warned you, limiting this event to one night…”

Setting his knife down, Enzo turned and fixed Paul with a level stare. “It’s Valentine’s Day. You know how I feel about this god-forsaken holiday.”

“I do,” Paul said tiredly.

“The fact that I got talked into it in the first place is bad enough, but if you think I’m going to serve a themed menu more than one single night for this joke of a…”

“I know,” Paul interrupted. “I do. But you’re the one who always loses his shit when bad press comes in the following week. We were only able to book two critics…”

“Yeah well, I asked for none,” Enzo muttered.

Paul rolled his eyes. “Please work with me here, man. I love you, but please don’t make me protect your own restaurant from your self-destructive spiral.”

Enzo felt his insides clench a bit, because Paul was one of the few people in the entire world brave enough to utter those words. Paul was also one of the few people left in the world who knew Enzo before he became a local celebrity with tables booked three years out. Once upon a time, Cherry Creek was their sanctuary— now, it felt like a prison. He was going stir-crazy and he knew Paul really was trying to soften the blow of what would rain down on him because of his own stubborn nature.

“You have two options,” Paul said after a beat.

Enzo leaned back against the counter and rubbed at his eyes. “If you’re going to say extend the menu…”

“Extend the menu, let me invite the rest of the critics trying to get on the list, and do the two interviews after,” Paul said slowly.

“No,” Enzo ground out.

“Or,” Paul went on, like Enzo hadn’t said anything, “do that puff piece video with that YouTuber whose been calling you out on twitter.”

Enzo instantly bristled. Taste with Tristian was a YouTube channel Enzo had been blissfully unaware of until three months prior when the vlogger caught wind of one of Enzo’s interviews. He’d thoughtlessly made a comment about being able to cook any dish with his hands behind his back, or blindfolded. It was an innocuous comment, only Tristian’s entire channel was dedicated to getting both local and celebrity chefs to cook in his kitchen blindfolded.

It was less a kitchy sort of trend and more because Tristian was an amateur cook who was also born blind. His channel was popular— something Enzo learned after only five minutes of research after his restaurant’s Twitter had blown up— and it had been a non-stop barrage of people daring him to put his money where his mouth is.

Once a week now, at the end of each video, Tristian had been calling on the owner of Mangia E Zitto to answer the challenge. Enzo had every intention of ignoring it until Tristian got bored and set his sights on another unsuspecting victim, but he knew he was reaching a crossroads. If he did this, it would soften his image a little. He’d fallen down the rabbit hole of videos one night during a fit of insomnia and watched almost everything Tristian had ever uploaded. Most of the chefs who filmed with Tristian were gently humiliated in their inability to function in their own kitchens without sight, but the thought of putting himself out there like that for public mockery made his stomach twist.

The worst part, though— the most gutting part— was that a tiny piece of him wanted to do it. Deep down, he knew it wouldn’t hurt to make himself look a little foolish. He’d clung on to this infallible, untouchable chef image for far too long, and as the years went by, the harder it became to keep up that ruse. Tristian wouldn’t ruin him, he’d just… humanize him a little bit.

It didn’t hurt either that Tristian was possibly one of the hottest men Enzo had ever seen. He was tall— or, at least, he looked tall on his videos. Muscular, broad shoulders, sharply cut jaw. His eyelids were closed in a perpetual squint, nose often wrinkled, pouty mouth curved in a grin like the entire world existed for his own amusement.

And his hands— god, his hands. Long-fingered, soft-looking, constantly dragging over his marble counter tops and kitchen tools, and occasionally into his mop of dark blonde hair. He laughed all the time, and Enzo envied him with a ferocity he hadn’t expected to feel toward any stranger.

In truth, he was witty, and clever, and sweet, and Enzo knew it would be all over for him if he and Tristian were in the same room. Tristian would see him for the fraud he was— he would see all the fake it till you make it moments which carried him until he became this. Because Tristian had a way of picking chefs apart, of cutting them all down to the quick in every video. The other chefs seemed thankful, but Enzo felt a bit too fragile to allow himself to be flayed open like that.

He wasn’t like the other people in Cherry Creek. He wasn’t a quirky, middle-class local. He wasn’t some bougie tourist who stumbled into town after a long weekend on molly and then decided to stay. No, Enzo had come from the quiet little neighborhood no one talked about and everyone warned against. He was the scholarship kid in the secondhand clothes with dirty fingernails because he worked where the other kids had daddy’s credit cards.

Deep down, Enzo knew he didn’t belong with the elite. And it was easier when other people didn’t know that.

“Hey.” Paul’s voice was soft, carefully dragging him out of his head. His friend’s rough, calloused fingers closed around his wrist, and the touch grounded him. “You don’t actually have to do either, you know.”

Enzo licked his lips, allowed himself just the barest moment to bask in the touch of another person, then he pulled away. He was safer alone— stronger alone. “I know. But you’re right, I don’t need any more bad press.”

“So, extend the menu by…”

“Call Tristian’s people,” Enzo said just as Paul started to speak.

His friend was silent a long moment, then he swallowed hard and looked almost terrified. “You… want to do the video?”

Enzo dragged his tongue over his bottom lip, feeling a surge of regret, though he knew he wasn’t going to take it back. Maybe he needed this— a step outside of his comfort zone, a moment to just face the thing he was terrified of most— being seen as the person he truly was.

“Lorenzo,” Paul breathed out quietly.

Enzo waved his hand. “Just… make the call, okay? Try to get something set up so it airs right after this stupid fucking weekend.” He couldn’t face Paul right then, couldn’t face himself, so he turned on his heel and marched toward of office. When he slammed the door hard enough to feel the vibration through the soles of his shoes, he allowed himself that moment of satisfaction.

Series: Crossing Nuwa #2
Genre: M/M Romance, Paranormal, Urban Fantasy
Release Date: February 4, 2020

Cover Design: Anna Sikorska

Summary:
With the help of technomage and hacker Theo, rare snake shifter Robbie escaped his mother and clan, who planned to use him as breeding stock. While still working to break through the conditioning and mind control of his past, Robbie is enjoying exploring a new relationship with the worldlier Theo.

But their fight isn’t over yet.

A trip to his aunt’s house for Thanksgiving is highjacked by political intrigue, leaving the couple wondering who their friends really are. They cannot help but be drawn into larger plots while trying to find justice for Robbie at his mother’s trial. When clan rivalries turn deadly, they’ll need their allies—and each other—more than ever.

Guilt raced through me, a tangible thing that made me want to curl up and hide. She was so pale... her features drawn, normally vibrant hair lank against the pillow. “Her body’s naturally healing,”

Abi grumbled. “She’ll be fine if we can get blood for her to drink.”

“That won’t be a problem. Didn’t you say that the Council was able to call someone last night to help Robbie’s aunt?” Theo asked.

“Yeah....” Abi nodded. “The Mambas run several blood banks here.”

Why was this happening? Why would someone hurt Maggie? She was the kindest person in the world....Abi pulled her phone out, and Theo put his hand on her wrist. “Shouldn’t we maybe call the Council first?”

“No,” I said firmly, causing both Abi and Theo to look up at me, startled. “No... not yet. We have to go to the park.”

“Sugar, what are you saying?”

“If we call the Council, they’ll say to let them handle it. But they handled things last night and look where we are. We don’t know who did this, and if we don’t put a stop to it now, then we continue to be in danger. We don’t know if the Council will ever be able to figure out who did this. But we can. If we show up like they’re expecting us to.”

Abi chewed on her lip. “What about Mom?” she asked, her voice cracking, which tore at my heart.

“How’s this? Abs, you said that you know someone who can bring blood, yeah? Just call them and have them bring Maggie the blood. The three of us will go, as planned.”

Abi nodded. “Yeah. Yeah, okay.” She turned from us and focused on Maggie and her phone

“Theo....” He turned to me and I swallowed hard. “What’s Mother’s phone number?”

“Sugar...?” His tone spoke of concern, but I shook my head.

“Please?” He shifted his focus, his eyes fluttering closed for a brief second before he opened them and held out his phone to me. With trembling fingers I pushed the Call button and held the phone to my ear.

“Wilhelmina Ramsayi,” Mother answered. Her voice cut through me, leaving me breathless.

With a voice that sounded so much stronger than I felt, I asked, “Mother, are you still in San Diego?” I could have asked Theo to track her. There was a reason I hadn’t. It didn’t matter if she was here or not. She was needed now.

There was a pause that extended for a beat too long. I was about to check to see if I had lost connection when her very clipped response came. “Yes.”

“You’re needed at Scripps Mercy Hospital on Fifth Avenue. There’s been an assassination attempt on Maggie. Abi has called for blood to be delivered, and we need to make sure she will be tended to as the three of us go and find out who is behind this.”

I hung up.

Week at a Glance: 2/10/20 - 2/16/20

Sunday's Short Stack: Dancing in Darkness by Alice Winters

Summary:
Ever since Antonio began working as a dancer at Frank’s club, he’s been trying to get Frank’s attention. To others, Frank might not be the ultimate catch, but to Antonio, he’s the man of his dreams. The problem is, Frank has already turned Antonio down out of fear for Antonio’s safety following an abduction and near-death experience. But Antonio is not ready to give up. He is determined to win him over on Valentine’s Day, no matter what he has to do. Even if it requires some unusual help from his friends, Felix and Lane. Nothing is too far for Antonio, not even a botched kidnapping.

Dancing in Darkness is a 20k-word novella featuring true love, abductions gone wrong, and a family that may be a bit too extreme.

This novella takes place after the events of In Darkness 3.

After finishing Deception in Darkness(#3) I found there was a short novella about Antonio and Frank and it was evening of February 13th so I figured what better way to start my Valentine's Day than reading Dancing in Darkness, a Valentine's Day short.

I instantly fell in love with Felix and Lane last November when I first dived into Hidden in Darkness but with Deception I also found myself falling head over heels in love with the friendship between Felix and Antonio.  So it's a bit grudgingly friendship on Antonio's part at first but their banter is nearly as delightful as Felix and Lane's, definitely a bromance in the making.  So even though Dancing is Antonio and Frank's Valentine story, Felix and Lane(more heavily Felix) play a part.

Flirting(badly at timesπŸ˜‰πŸ˜‰), mix-ups, family, friends, tons of banter, and Alice Winters has created a great little gem worthy of her In Darkness stamp.  Just want to add that one of the things I love most about this series' characters, from Felix & Lane to Antonio & Frank to Cal to Lane's family to Felix's brother and even the bad guys, the physical characteristics are real they aren't the cookie cutter Hollywood type of perfection.  To me it's their realistic physicalities that actually make them perfect because to me "perfect" is imperfection and this is what makes this novella and series as a whole really pop for me.

RATING:

Chapter One
“Antonio!”

Oh no. Please. No. Not him.

“Antonio!”

I quicken my pace, deciding that I really don’t need that pack of Oreos. If I can make it through the checkout line and out the door before he notices me, cookie withdrawals will be worth it.

Felix slides in front of me, clear irritation on his face.

I look down at the man, though I’m not sure there are many who look up at him.  Five-year-olds, maybe? I’m not super tall myself, only five foot eight, but I feel tall around him.

“Are you running from me?” he asks.

“No?” Oh no. I made it a question.

“He made it a question,” another man says as he comes up behind me. I turn to look at Lane, Felix’s boyfriend, who is truly God’s gift to mankind. He looks like what horny women would dream up if they were allowed to have a mold maker for men. He has the tall, dark-haired, handsome thing going on which is why I question how he ended up with Felix. Visually, they are complete opposites but together, they work strangely well.

By Lane’s side is his seeing-eye dog, Copper, who is wagging his black tail. Honestly, he may be the only one out of the three I’m glad to see.

It’s not that I dislike Lane or Felix. Actually, I secretly kind of like them. I’ve never met two people who get into more shit in my life. The issue is that they recently dragged me into their shit. After being tied up, threatened, then held at gunpoint, I feel like I’ve had my Lane and Felix quota for the next ten years.

“You’re looking rough, Antonio,” Felix says with a grimace. “You're letting yourself go.”

I glare at him. I take it back. Twenty years would be too soon. “What am I letting go, exactly?”

Felix shrugs. “I don’t know, I just wanted to make myself feel better. Did you pop your cherry yet?”

Fifty years would be too soon. I glare at him some more. “Excuse me?”

“Felix told me about that. Are you sure you want to waste it on Frank?” Lane asks. “How old are you? Twenty-seven? You’ve kept it so long, save it for the perfect man.”

Now he’s getting in on it too?

“You should keep that until you hook a man like I did,” Felix assures me. “Then again, there’s no one like Lane.”

Then he says cute things and I kind of forgive him a tiny bit.

“How about a threesome?” he suggests.

Make it sixty years.

Lane shrugs and I realize that he’s lost his mind as well. The poor man is blind and probably can’t figure out how to get away from Felix. Maybe he has Stockholm Syndrome. It’s the only reasonable explanation for why these two work. “We were talking about buying a sex swing to add some excitement into the bedroom, but I suppose you’ll do,” Lane says.

“Yeah, just FYI, sometimes the dog watches. It’s only a little creepy the first few times. Then you get used to it. You’re all, ‘Oh harder, Lane, harder!’ and then you look over and the dog is staring you in the eyes. Right in the fucking eyes. Then you’re like, shit, I made eye contact, now it’s kind of weird. But he won’t—”

“Felix, babe, you’re rambling,” Lane says.

Felix grins as he pats my shoulder. “Alright, all joking aside, how is the Beauty and the Beast thing going?”

“Frank isn’t a beast.”

“You mean he transformed into a prince? Now, this I gotta see,” he says, clearly still joking.

I sigh. Just because Frank isn’t gorgeous doesn’t mean that I can’t like him. “It’s going like shit. Valentine’s Day is only a few days away and I really thought I could get him to go out with me on it. It was supposed to be special. Instead, he just runs whenever I’m around.”

Felix looks disappointed. “But you kissed him! I thought for sure… he turned you down? There’s no way he could turn you down.”

“He thinks it’s too dangerous. Told me that he doesn’t want me to get hurt. Blah blah.”

Felix is silent for a moment before looking at Lane. He leans into him and whispers. “Why do I kind of feel like it’s our fault?”

“Maybe it was the safe you stole,” Lane says. “Are you feeling guilty about that?”

He shakes his head, brownish-blond waves flopping into his face. “No, not at all.”

“The evidence?”

“No, not that either.” He shrugs. “Antonio, I’ve decided that we’re going to help you woo Frank.”

“I don’t want help.” I want help. “Especially not by you guys.” Even if it’s you guys.

“Good. Do you work tonight?”

“Yeah. Please don’t come.” Please do. I need some excitement in my life.

“We’ll be over later to check out what’s going on. I have a special ability for these things, you’ll see,” Felix says as he pats my shoulder reassuringly.

“You must, to have been able to hook Lane,” I say.

He gives me a wink. “That’s because he’s blind. He literally can’t figure out how to get away. All I need to do is rearrange the furniture every few days and he can’t find his way out of the house.”

I look over at Lane who just shrugs like he isn’t bothered by this at all. “We have a very healthy relationship, if that’s what you’re wondering.”

“I wasn’t.”

Felix reaches out and squeezes my shoulder. There’s a gentle, kind smile on his face. “Valentine’s Day is only a week away; it’ll be the perfect day for you and Frank. I assure you, I will make it happen, even if Lane and I have to pay him to go on a date with you.”

“Great,” I say sarcastically.

Felix suddenly looks panicked as he grabs Lane’s arm. “Lane, we forgot the ice cream. Go fetch me ice cream.”

“Alright,” Lane says, but before leaving, he leans into me. “You’re going to regret this.”

It’s not a threat, it’s a warning. But the joke’s on him–

I already do.

He turns around and heads off with the German shepherd in tow.

I point toward Lane as he charges forward, leaving other people to part for him.

“Is he actually going to figure out how to get you ice cream?” I ask curiously.

“I don’t know. I’m kind of curious myself.  See you tonight. If you want me to dance a number with you, I’ll bring some clothes.”

“You do not know how to dance. I’ve literally never seen anyone not understand the concept of dancing as much as you.”

“Thanks, I always strive to be the best. If I can’t be the best dancer, I can be the best at being awful at it. Oh god… What’s he doing?” Felix hurries off, leaving me standing in the middle of the store alone.
