Love Torn is the second book in the Twisted Love Series. The first book, Love Lorn, was written by Amy Manemann. If you haven't read it, nows the time to so that you have the backstory on Detective Evie Harper when they two characters are partnered together in Love Inked.

I smiled into Westing’s blue eyes. There was no doubt I cared about the handsome guy, but we were just friends—friends with benefits when we were in a lull between other relationships. Well, he did relationships. I just had sex. I wasn’t interested in happily-ever-after. I’d seen what that fairy tale did to people, and it wasn’t a Disney song and dance with fireworks bursting over their heads as their lips first touched.

Love was brutal—useless. It clawed out your heart and voided your soul. It burrowed deep into your psyche and turned you into someone you weren’t; it forced you to do things you never would have done under normal circumstances. It tore you apart, fiber by fiber, until you were nothing but a shell of yourself.

Besides, the divorce rate between cops was off the charts, right up there with suicide rates for our profession. Who needed that shit?

If I wanted to get off—and I did often—I had a list of guys I could reach out and touch. The contacts on my phone were packed with digits to dial for a good time, but I never got serious with any of them. In fact, Josh was the only guy with whom I’d ever had seconds—and thirds—and more. Maybe it was because we never discussed it. We knew what the other one liked; we jumped in, got off, and then kissed the other goodbye as we walked away with a smile and a wave.

That was the kind of relationship that I liked: love them and leave them and not feel guilty about it—no heartstrings, no hopes.

Westing winked at me. “Alright, Mann, it’s your round.”

“Got it.” I went to scoot off my stool and put my hand down to the side to steady myself. Instead of landing on the side of my seat as I’d anticipated, my palm landed on Harvard’s thick, slack-clad thigh which rested against my stool. Instantly, the muscle under my hand bunched, and I found myself taking my time climbing out of my seat. As I got to my feet, my hand leisurely slid over the slick material of his slacks.

I peered his way before I turned for the bar and his heavy, dark lashes blinked slowly over his eyes, a knowing smirk lifting the corners of his full lips. Yeah, Keith Harvard and I were partners, and for the last six months, we’d kept it on the straight and narrow. Recently, things had changed, though. I was starting to seriously wonder how much longer we’d be able to keep it strictly professional. I was torn on this, as I really enjoyed working with him and dreaded the day I’d have to put in for a partner transfer.

Two weeks ago, Keith and I had slipped around the side of a row home on a warrant execution, heading toward the small backyard. We had committed to our forward direction and were about three feet from the corner we’d just come around when we had come under fire. Keith had bum-rushed me behind a small stone wall that normally housed trash cans. The two of us had just enough space to safely hide on our knees as long as I hugged the stone up close and personal, and he did the same to me. I tried not to think about how filthy the area was as my skin made contact with it.

Maybe it was the adrenaline that had us jonesing for action, or possibly it had just been a while since Keith had gotten off. Either way, as he kneeled behind me, our bodies were crushed together, my chest flattened against the stone, my cheek pressing against the cool, foul-smelling smooth surface as his hot breath rushed along the side of my face. His muscular chest was compressed against my back hard enough that I knew no light could be seen between our bodies. I could feel his heart beating fast and strong against my left shoulder blade. One of his legs nestled between mine, his thick thigh wedged snugly against my ass, pushing my hips roughly against the stone. After a moment, I realized that the other hard thing against my ass wasn’t a bone but a boner. Well—damn.

He veered on the path, his footsteps leading toward the large fountain. My ears picked up the screech of tires and fading wail of sirens behind me. I knew without looking that back up had arrived, and I was relieved to have some actual police officers arriving on the scene.

My relief was short lived when his grip suddenly tightened on the girl, and he pressed the knife harder against the side of her throat. A thin red line appeared, blood trickling down her neck, and the girl cried out, tears spilling over her round cheeks. “I said get the fuck away from me!”

God damn it…I jerked my gaze to see a twenty-something-year-old-looking hipster hugging the side of a park bench close to Douglas. He wore an odd-shaped stocking cap that was pushed low over his forehead, and he had the determined look of a man about to do something really heroic that would probably get someone killed.

“Back off.” I growled the warning low, relieved when the baggy pants, want-to-be-a-hero hipster begrudgingly backed away. I knew what he was thinking; the guy was distracted, so why not try to make a play for the girl? Except Douglas was a lot smarter than that, and I had the feeling he would plunge the knife in the side of the girl’s neck faster than anyone could make a move.

“See, Donovan, everything’s good,” I reassured my suspect once I was certain nobody else was going to play hero. “No one is getting close.” We were a good distance away from the park entrance now, but the sound of fast moving footsteps beating the pavement told me help was close at hand. Normally, this would be the time when I would back down and gladly allow the hostage negotiation unit to take over, but this guy wasn’t playing with a full deck. Trying to rebuild a rapport with him may do us more harm than good.

Something, or rather, someone, shifted in my peripheral vision. I spared the man a quick glance as he worked his way behind a statue, recognition instantly sinking in. Even in his street clothes the intimidating profile of Detective Stephen Harris was noticeable. His dirty blonde hair was covered by a Philadelphia Eagles baseball cap set low over his brooding eyes as he quietly assessed the situation. Where he came from was hard to say, but he didn’t look happy. In fact, he looked downright pissed off. I could relate.

“You don’t get it. It doesn’t matter.” Douglas sucked in a deep breath, eyes wild. “It doesn’t matter!” The scream echoed around me, and I watched him take a step backwards, the backs of his knees hitting the fountain. “I’m fucked, and there’s nothing you can do about it.”

“Donovan, there’s always another solution, but I can’t help if you don’t let me.” I quickly scrambled to regain control. My eyes connected briefly with Harris’s, and I could tell he was thinking the same as me. We were losing ground.

From his position, Harris was in Donovan’s blind spot. Three more steps and Harris could easily overtake him, if Donovan didn’t lose his cookies before then.

“It’s too late. Too late.” Donovan glanced down at the rippling water behind him before looking back at the crowd of uniformed officers who had reached my side. He appeared to be weighing his options, which weren’t good. I took advantage of his altered gaze to step closer.

Two more steps…

“It’s never too late to the do the right thing,” I continued, barely breathing. “That little girl didn’t do anything wrong, Donovan. Why don’t you let her go and we can talk about fixing all of this.” I shuffled closer.

One more step…

Donovan shook his head, lifting his foot to rest it on the edge of the fountain. “You can’t fix a dead man.”

Catching Up with Love by Amy Manemann
Before she could call out a good morning greeting, he suddenly jumped, releasing a stream of curses that would have made a sailor blush.

“Are you alright…” her voice trailed off as his fingers dug beneath the hem of his shirt and he pulled it over his head with a jerk, revealing the mouthwatering muscles that lay beneath. Washboard abs, hard pecks, and muscles bulged everywhere she looked, and she naughtily looked her fill. Oh Lord, she breathed, desire pulsing through every inch of her body. He was going to be the death of her.

A hint of a smile curved the corners of his mouth when she finally met his gaze, and the breath caught in the back of her throat at the hungry desire in his eyes.

“Good morning,” he said huskily, tossing his shirt into the sink and turning on the tap. “Sleep well?”

“Mm-hm,” was the only legible response she could come up with, her brain sluggish against the fog of desire blanketing her. She really needed to get a grip. Except all she could focus on were the rippling muscles on display. He was going to have to put a shirt on if she was going to have any coherent thoughts today.

“You keep undressing me with your eyes like that and we’ll be late for breakfast,” he mused aloud. Liza was thankful he wasn’t looking at her, because she was fairly certain her cheeks were bright red at that moment.

Clearing her throat, she tossed her long hair over her shoulder, leaning a hip against the countertop. “It’s not my fault you decided to do a strip tease in the kitchen.”

This time he looked at her, a grin cracking his face. “I don’t know if you were aware of it, but bacon grease hurts like a bitch when it hits you. Plus, I didn’t want my shirt to get ruined. It’s one of my favorites.”

Though soaking wet, he held up the faded t-shirt, the tell-tale insigne for the Marlins peeking back at her. She should have guessed.

“Nice shirt.” She tapped her fingers on the countertop, noticing for the first time that they were alone in the kitchen. “No Penelope today?”

“Nope, I convinced her to let me make breakfast this morning, promising I wouldn’t burn the house down. I hope you like bacon, eggs and toast.”

As if on cue, Liza’s stomach rumbled loudly. They both laughed.

“I’ll take that as a yes.” He wrung water from his shirt, shutting off the tap with his elbow. Droplets of water run down the front of his pecs, and Liza followed them hungrily.

“Not that I don’t appreciate the show,” she let her eyes linger on his abs, “but if you expect me to eat breakfast with you, it’d go a lot smoother if you put on a shirt.”

With a grin that sent her stomach somersaulting, Nolan dropped the shirt in the sink and stalked towards her, crowding her space with his body until she was completely off balance. Liza grabbed hold of the first thing she came in contact with, which just so happened to be his broad shoulder. His arm snaked around her waist, holding her in place as the heat of his skin seared her hand, burning through her clothes. What she wouldn’t give to be skin to skin with him right now.

“Are you sure about that, Sweet Cheeks? Your lips,” his heavy stare landed on her mouth for a full second before rising back to her eyes, “say one thing, but your eyes are saying something else.”

DENNY SLID HIS BODY DOWN until his head was fully submerged in the Jacuzzi. When his phone starting buzzing, he decided to drown out the sound. Literally. He knew who it was, and he knew why. His friends—mostly Jeff Hammond and Sage Remington—had been hounding him to get out more ever since his wife, Sara, had died a few months earlier. Now here he was on a Friday night alone, and he knew his friends worried about him.

He tried telling both friends that he enjoyed staying at home once he finished his day as the manager of Hammond Homes, which his friend Jeff owned.

“I told Sara I wouldn’t’ let you feel sorry for yourself, and I’m not going to let her down,” Jeff had said the day before. “Sage and some of the other guys are meeting up tomorrow at Nightcaps, and you’d better be there or Sage and I are going to come over to your house and put you in a strait jacket, or you can go willingly.

So Denny knew who kept calling persistently. With a sigh, he stood up and reached for a towel. In a few minutes, there would be pounding on his door, before Jeff took the liberty of using his own key to come into his house. Sage would be sure to follow.

Only this time, when he opened the door, he discovered they had double teamed him. Kurt and Dex Remington, Sage’s brothers, came along with the other two. When he saw the three hulking Remington brothers and his best friend standing in his living room, he knew he had no choice but to put on some clothes and go out with the four of them.

“Get your ass dressed,” Jeff commanded.

“Or you’re going just like that into the strait jacket,” Sage said. “You’ve got no choice.”

“Besides, Leanna has brought along one of her friends, and she’s a looker,” Kurt said referring to his girlfriend. “And hurry it up, the girls are getting plastered at the bar without us there.”

“And running up our bar tab,” Dex said.

“All right.” Denny caved and gave into their demands because he knew he had no choice. “But I sure wish you’d stop trying to fix me up. I’m not ready.”

The four other men shook their heads, then pushed him toward the bedroom to get dressed.

A Twist of Love by Calinda B
Marco nodded, turned, and dragged Gia from the bar, across the sticky tiles.

"Stop it!" she protested. "You're hurting me. I still have bruises."

Marco said nothing, shoving open the door.

Gia blinked again, her eyes stinging from the late morning light. She glanced at the grimy sidewalk, covered with litter. "Where'd you learn to fight like that?"

"Marines," Marco said, in clipped tones.

Her eyebrows flew up. I've got a Marine as my sober companion? Shit. I just thought him a fitness addict. Real fear made an appearance for the first time since this whole shit-storm began, like arms trying to crush her chest.

"So, what next?" she said, still tripping over her feet.

The guy had a long-legged stride.

"New plan," Marco said, approaching a shiny SUV.

A couple of teens lounged against the vehicle, arms crossed. One of them had a cigarette dangling from his lips.

"Thanks for watching the car, guys." Marco fished in his pocket, pulled out a wad of bills, and tossed it in the boys' direction.

The kid with the smoke deftly caught the crumpled bills. He removed the cigarette from his mouth and fingered the cash. When he unfolded the wad, he grinned.

"No problem.” He nodded to his companion. “Let's roll."

Marco dragged Gia toward the vehicle. He hauled open the passenger door and shoved her into the seat.

"Ouch! Quit being so rough with me," she said, noting the same new whine as yesterday.

"Apparently, you like it rough if those sleaze-bags I just tossed are any indication." He reached down for the glove box, opened it, and retrieved a set of handcuffs.

Gia's eyes grew large. "What are you going to do with those?"

"Sex games, what do you think?" Marco said, a glint in his eye.

For a fleeting second, hope flitted through her woozy brain. Might be nice.

He grabbed her wrist and fitted one of the cuffs over it. He clicked it shut. He fitted the other end over the door handle before slamming the door shut.

She tugged against her restraints. They didn’t give. She let out a sigh and slumped against the interior.

Marco climbed in the other side, blasted on the ignition, and took off.

"Where are we going?" she asked, as they headed out of Peckham.

"You'll see." His lips pressed tight.

Gia stared out the window at the London cityscape. When it yielded to rolling hills and quaint cottages, her brow furrowed.

"Where are we going?" she asked again.

The big guy stayed quiet.

"So, I get to know nothing?" she asked. She started to cross her arms at his silence, but the cuffs pulled at her wrist. She let out a huffy sigh.

He drove through a silly little town full of shops and tourists, and then headed toward the hills. He hooked a hard right into a gravel-lined driveway, leading up to an innocuous looking house at the top of one of the hills.

"B&B?" Gia said, grinning. "Is this where the sex games commence?"
