“Come on, sit down,” Johnny said motioning to the arm chair across from the couch. “I don’t know if you remember but when you were a little boy you guys used to come to Denver.”

“Before my mom died.”

“Yes. You and Addie were inseparable. You used to protect her from the neighborhood boy when he’d call her names.”

“And now I call her those same names, yet you’re still willing to take me in.”

“Your dad and I were best friends too. I was his protector. But then…” When Johnny paused just a moment too long, Riley’s curiosity got the best of him. “But then what?”

“Something happened that changed my life forever. I was no longer capable of protecting or being a friend or brother to anyone.”

Riley’s demeanor suddenly turned ice cold. “So, you’re saying you owe my father and taking care of me repays that debt?”

“No, what I’m saying is that you’re my nephew and I love you despite the sins of your father and since he no longer wants my protection and since I’m capable, I’m offering it to you.”

Riley couldn’t quite bring himself to look at his uncle so he set his gaze on the snag in his jeans. “But you don’t even know me.”

Johnny chuckled knowingly. “I know more than you think. Between when you guys stopped coming to Denver when you were six and when I moved home a few months ago, I was in almost daily contact with Uncle Joseph. I arranged for food baskets and grocery store gift cards, Angel tree nominations, and visits from social workers to make sure you were properly taken care of.”

“I…what? Why?”

Johnny shrugged and stood up. “I don’t know. I maybe couldn’t stand the thought of the little black-haired boy with sad eyes who used to crawl into my lap for story time going without. Maybe I missed my own child when her mother took her away. And maybe it was just time to help and be a part of the family again.”

“Thank you.” It was a whisper so soft that only way Johnny knew it was real was because he saw the gratitude in his nephew’s eyes.

Release Tour: Adella's Heart by JJ Ellis

Title: Adella's Heart
Author: JJ Ellis
Series: Harper's Rock Legacy #3
Genre: Mature Young Adult
Release Date: June 5, 2018

πŸ’«πŸ’₯πŸ’«Please Note: This series deals many teenage issues. This particular book touches on kidnapping, rape, physical abuse, & eating disorders. JJ doesn't go into physical and descriptive aspects of these issues but uses the issues to allow the story to move forward.πŸ’«πŸ’₯πŸ’«

Summary:
Ben Croft and Adella Johnson come from two different worlds. Ben's a high school football star who likes the party girls. Adella is autistic and prefers the majesty of the horses she works with to the social awkwardness created by teen boys.

But for Ben, there's just something about the unpretentious, pretty blonde. So, when his usual charms don't work on her, he drops the act and gets real. They form a quick and powerful bond.

It seems almost from the beginning that the world is working hard to shred everything that ties them together. And it just might succeed when each is faced with a future they never saw coming.

Little did he know that the first time he saw her that day, his world would fall away beneath him. It started with the neigh of a horse, the sweet smell of hay, and a laugh so full of joy it made his heart ache. His eyes scanned the landscape settling on the fence beyond the trees. Adella, standing next to Misty, with her head thrown back in laughter was like nothing he’d ever witnessed before; beauty, life, joy, everything pure in the world stood before him in the girl he wanted so much. As the Wyoming wind tossed her hair about, Ben was finally able to move forward again. But for the first time in his life speech escaped him.

“Ben!” Addie squealed when she saw him approach. “I’m so glad you made it.”

“Uh hi.” He stared at her like he was seeing beauty for the first time.

“We’re going to train Misty some more today. Is that okay.”

Ben looked down at the ground. “What…how…uh…”

Addie looked at him, her expression puzzled. “Oh no! You caught my autism!”

There was a silent beat then both teens laughed breaking the tension. Misty joined in with a loud neigh and a nudge to Adella’s side.

When the laughter finally died down, Ben kissed Adella’s cheek and took Misty’s reins. “What do I do first, boss?”

By the time Thanksgiving rolled around the snow had returned to Northeastern Wyoming and they couldn’t wait to spend the weekend at the Harper Ranch horseback riding and snowmobiling. “So, are you ready for this?” Michael asked Sadie as they pulled into his grandmother’s driveway.

“Yeah, I can’t wait. I love your large, crazy family.”

“And they love you. I personally can’t wait for tonight. You’re going to love the surprise I have for you.”

“You do know that I’m not fond of surprises, don’t you?”

“I know,” he smirked. “But this one is amazing and I gave you a hint.”

“What, that it involves nighttime, a snowstorm, and a snowmobile? That tells me nothing.”

“It’s all you’re getting, SaySay. And I promise you’ll love it.” At least he hoped she would. It was time to confess his feelings and hope for the best. Tonight was the night.

“Well I better,” she teased. “Or there will be hell to pay.”

Michael opened his door and slipped out of the car. When Sadie didn’t follow, he leaned back in. “What, you’ll make me eat your cooking?” Sticking his tongue out at her, he turned and fled into the warm, cozy house. Sadie was right on his heels.

“Whoa you two,” Evie Harper admonished. “What’s going on here?”

“Nothing, Grandma,” Michael said with a big smile. “I was just telling Sadie how much I love her cooking. And she was telling me how sweet I was.”

Sadie’s look was incredulous. “Michael Harper Croft…”

“Well isn’t that nice,” Evie enthused as she pulled on Sadie’s hand. “I was just saying how I wished I had someone who could help cook half of Thanksgiving dinner for me. Come into the kitchen and I’ll get you an apron.”

Sadie couldn't do anything but follow her as she looked back at Michael in horror. “Uh...Mrs. Harper, I really can’t cook.”

“I figured, dear. We’ll just let my naughty grandson stew in his juices for a while.”

Sadie smiled and relaxed. “I can’t cook but I’m a good helper.”

“I was counting on it,” Evie smiled.

“So, Benjamin Harper has anyone told you that you have a mighty fine ass?”

Ben snorted a laugh and kept on moving with his boyfriend’s laughter trailing behind. He paused when he reached the top of the hill and waited for JC. “Hold my hand as we go into the clearing.” They both stepped up and through the trees. An outdoor table and chairs sat before them. “Now look to your right.”

JC turned slowly in the direction Ben advised and his breath caught. The lake lay sprawled out before them with no barriers of trees or buildings, just shining water and the opposite shore covered in pine trees capped with snow. “Now I understand why you like it up here. This place is amazing.”

“I know,” Ben murmured. “In the summer I bring a book or my sketchpad up here, and somehow find the strength to deal with whatever problem I’m having. And in the winter, I bundle up and come up here to experience the extra quiet of the snow covered earth. And if I’m sad, I cry and let the tears freeze on my cheek. It reminds me that I’m alive.”

JC stood silent for a moment trying to absorb everything his boyfriend said. And then it clicked. “Wait, you…you don’t feel alive sometimes?”

“No, I don’t. I feel…I don’t know, emotionless I guess. Without purpose. I have never been able to see a future for myself. Oh, I can list what I want to happen in the future but I can’t see it or grasp it.”

“You never told anybody,” JC realized suddenly. “Why?”

Fates Encore by JJ & TA Ellis

Title: Fates Encore
Authors: JJ & TA Ellis
Genre: Contemporary Romance
Release Date: December 21, 2015
Cover Design: JJ Ellis
Summary:
Jackson and Francesca, Cole and Evelyn: two baby boomer couples who have overcome their own personal hell to forge vibrant, lasting marriages

When Francesca and Cole pass away within six months of each other, Jackson and Evelyn continue the pen pal relationship the two women started some 52 years prior.

And with each bit of correspondence they find their hearts healing. Together, can they create a new and lasting bond?

MARCH 2013
Evelyn’s day was a busy one and now she was ready to sit down, kick her feet up, and call Fran and Jack. If the last time they talked a week ago was any indication, their weekly phone conversations would soon end. After six rings, the phone was finally picked up.

“Hello,” Fran breathed.

“Hey sweetie. I just wanted to let you know I love you.”

“Love you too,” she managed to get out before pausing, trying to catch her breath. “Evie, Jack’s in the bathroom so I have to make this quick.”

“Okay sweetie.” What could Fran need to hide from her husband?

“I need you to watch over Jack for me when I’m gone. Help him with his grief.”

“Of course. You don’t even need to ask.”

“You just went through it, so I figured…”

“I know, sweetie.”

“You’re the only one I can ask. You’re so much like your twin, and Ethan is one of the few people my dear husband trusts.”

“He’ll be just fine. We’ll make sure of it!”

“Promise me,” Fran choked out through tears.

“I promise!”

“Thank you. I love you, Evie. Here’s Jack.”

She could hear her friend’s labored breathing. “Love you too, Fran.”

A moment later, Jack came on the line. “Hey Evelyn.”

“Hi Jack. She’s not doing well, is she?”

“No. It’s close,” he murmured.

“How are you doing?” She heard a sigh and some deep breathing before he answered.

“I’m fine. Right now I’m just trying to be strong for her.”

“You’re a good man, Jack.”

“No,” he insisted. “I’m just a man who loves his wife. I hate this but she’ll be going into the hospital Monday. We can’t do it here anymore.”

“I’m sorry.” Evelyn felt like someone had just reached out and torn her heart right from her chest for the second time in just under six months.

Jack cleared his throat loudly. “Enough about me. How did the grand re-opening of Movie and a Pizza Place go? I bet you’re relieved that renovations are complete.”

“Everything is perfect. Cole would be so proud of his business. But I think I’m about ready to retire.”

“Retire? You’re too young to retire.”

Evelyn laughed. “You sure know how to flatter a girl. But I’m just tired. I want to have some fun.”

“I don’t blame you there!” He suddenly heard Evelyn screech and her sons laughing in the background.

“Boy, you do that again and I’ll scratch your eyes out.”

Jack laughed at the goings on at his friend’s house. It made him miss his oldest son Ethan, who was away in the Navy.

“I’m sorry Jack. My boys are acting like ten-year-old children.”

“That’s okay,” he chuckled. “There for a minute I thought there was a wild kitty cat loose at your house.”

“Yeah, sorry about that screech”

“No worries here. It’s good to hear you happy again.”

“I’m getting there, Jack. I truly am. Could you give Fran a hug and a kiss for me?”

“I will. I’ll talk to you soon.”

The line went silent and Evelyn put the phone away. With her friend going into the hospital she knew there would be no more weekly phone calls. Fran had been her pen pal for over fifty years and it was now time to write the final letter.
