Bound by Duty by Stormy Smith

Title: Bound by Duty
Author: Stormy Smith
Series: Bound #1
Genre: New Adult, Fantasy
Release Date: July 24, 2014
Summary:
Amelia grew up in a world of half-truths. She knows she’s an Elder but has no idea what that means. Her father reminds her daily that she must maintain control but he refuses to explain why. Even worse, she’s betrothed to the prince of the Immortals and she doesn’t even know his name.

Finally breaking free to live a few normal years at a community college, the last thing Amelia expects is to find her best friend in a cheeky Southern girl and to fall for a self-assured human who sees her for who she is and not what she’ll be.

As she learns more about herself, Amelia realizes the line between love and duty is a thin one. As her power continues to increase exponentially and her questions are slowly answered, Amelia must make the ultimate choice. The question is, will her head or her heart win the battle?

To set the stage, this scene features Amelia and Aidan. They are just getting to know each other and both have pasts that have irrevocably changed the people they have become. There are secrets and fears that have been buried their whole lives. The question is if they can trust each other?

Without looking back at me, he squeezed my hand tightly. His fingers pressing hard into the divots between the bones in my hand. He clutched at my hand as if I could keep him here, pull him away from the memories that overwhelmed him, that threatened to pull him down into a place I could feel he didn’t want to go.

“You can tell me, but only if you want to.” I put the words between us and let the silence follow. Turning back to stare at the sky, I gave him time to decide. I had no idea what he had been through, what he would say, but I understood what the darkness of truth could do to you if you let it.

“I don’t know why, but I want to tell you, Amelia. It’s insane because I never tell anyone this stuff. But, I want to tell you. Before this goes any further, I want you to know who I am.” He still wasn’t looking at me so while I saw him in my peripheral, I kept my gaze on the clouds. “Then, tell me,” I said. Taking a deep breath, I finished with a surprising, “Tell me and I’ll tell you.”

The longer Aidan held my hand, the more I got used to the feel of my nerves being raw and the increased sensations that vibrated from our point of contact throughout the rest of my body. As I lay there, waiting for him to speak, he kept our hands locked, sliding his middle finger up and down in a slow rhythm over the back of my hand. I could feel callouses on his palm and the heat he radiated. It was soothing and, for once, I was truly in control, at least as far as my power was concerned. My heartbeat, however, raced triple time as I had time to realize that I was laying on the forest floor holding hands with Aidan Montgomery, waiting for him to unlock doors I hadn’t known I wanted inside of. Someone I could give some of my truth to and who wanted to give me theirs in return.

Hi everyone! Stormy Smith here.

Music is a HUGE part of my life. I am addicted to Spotify and adore finding new artists. I spend a lot of time getting to know local artists and live shows are among my favorite places to be. When I wrote Bound by Duty I knew it would have a soundtrack. Every significant moment in my life has a song associated with it and the book I spent a year pouring myself into would be no different!

I’m a little bit of an odd duck in that I can’t actually write listening to music that has words. So, I spend my writing hours listening to classical music that helps distract my mind just enough to keep the creativity flowing without stopping the lovely voices in my head from telling me their stories. But, once I’m in the car, cleaning, or doing anything else, I’ve always got an ear out for songs. I find that the lyrics often inspire new plot lines, emotions or authentic reactions in characters.

You can check out the full Spotify soundtrack for BBD, but here are my top ten in no particular order:

The One That Got Away – The Civil Wars
Haunted – A Taylor Swift cover by Jess Moskaluke and Alex G.
In My Veins – Andrew Belle, featuring Erin McCarley
Hurricane – MSMR
Clarity – A Zedd cover by Corey Gray
Boston – Augustana
I’mnotwaiting – Bonne Finken
Breathe Again – Sara Bareilles
Promising, Promises – Jon McLaughlin
No Light, No Light – Florence and the Machine

It was really important to me to not only cover the storyline with my choices, but also the emotions of the characters. Music is really important to Amelia, my heroine, and she often lets herself get lost in it. I didn’t want to date my story by announcing the songs and artists in the book, but in my head I always knew what she was listening to.

Bound by Duty is truly a coming of age story. It’s a paranormal fantasy that explores the many layers of what makes a person themselves. Is it your family, your duty, the ones you love, the pieces of you that you can’t control or the family (i.e. friends) you choose for yourself? How do you balance the person you are with the life you want? Amelia faces all of these questions as she finds herself with her first-ever best friend – a sassy Southern girl – and her first dose of young love. But there are situations out there bigger than she ever imagined and she has to decide who she’s going to be and what she’s made of.

If you decide to give Bound by Duty a shot, I’d love to hear the songs it brought to mind for you! Hook up with me at facebook or on twitter

Fun facts about me by Stormy Smith
1. M&Ms or Skittles? M&M’s all the way. Bonus points if they are the special Christmas mint kind.

2. Fantasy or Horror? Fantasy. I’m a TOTAL scaredy-cat. The one and only time I went to a haunted house I tried to bum rush the emergency exit because I was so terrified and up crying my way through it.

3. Typing or Pen & Paper? For writing the book itself, typing, but for brainstorming I like giant sticky post-its all over my basement so I can scribble and pace while I blare my playlist and talk to myself.

4. Ebooks or Print? E-books for most books but print for the authors I love.

5. Eat in or Eat out? In. Then no one has to worry about who’s driving while I pour glass after glass of wine.

6. Water or Flavored Drink? Water.

7. Apples or Oranges? Apples. With peanut butter, preferably.

8. Laundry or Dishes? Dishes. I HATE LAUNDRY.

9. Shopping or Movies? Shopping, only because I so rarely see my girl friends anymore I’d rather spend time perusing and chatting than just sitting next to them.

10. Comfy clothes or Fashionista? Fashionista! I don’t know that I am one, but I’d love to be.  I just feel better in girly clothes. Like I can conquer the world!

11. Go-to book series? Karen Marie Moning’s Fever Series. I could reread them over and over. And Jericho Barrons…swooooon.

12. Favorite way to unwind? A glass of wine and a date with my husband and our DVR. My brain goes non-stop between work, grad school, marketing one book and writing another. I like the down time!

13. Cats or Dogs? Cats. I like that they are more self-sufficient and have their own personalities. I have one that won’t stop walking across my keyboard right now and I love she wants to purr all over me and lick my hands for attention.

Stormy Smith calls Iowa's capital home now, but was raised in a tiny town in the Southeast corner of the state. She grew to love books honestly, having a mom that read voraciously and instilled that same love in her. She knew quickly that stories of fantasy were her favorite, and even as an adult gravitates toward paranormal stories in any form.

Writing a book had never been an aspiration, but suddenly the story was there and couldn't be stopped. When she isn't working on, or thinking about, her books, Stormy's favorite places include bar patios, live music shows, her yoga mat or anywhere she can relax with her husband or girlfriends.

An American Cowboy in Scotland by Em Taylor

Title: An American Cowboy in Scotland
Author: Em Taylor
Genre: Contemporary Romance, Romantic Comedy
Release Date: June 25, 2015
Summary:
As Rhona Lorimer waits for her new boss to arrive, she reckons things can’t get much worse. The manager of the Scottish estate has to explain to her new American boss that the estate is in ruins and there’s no money left. When the drop dead gorgeous cowboy turns up in full Highland regalia, looking like he fell off a shortbread tin, Rhona knows she has her work cut out.

The locals don’t take to Lord Cole Macallan, so Rhona feels obliged to show him hospitality. But the guy is hot. Can Rhona fight her feelings for her new boss as their worlds collide and they discover just how much Scotland and America are two countries divided by a common language… but brought together by mutual passions?

I pushed my butt back against his hips and was pleased to realise he had a healthy hard-on. Though what I had been expecting when I’d had my tongue down the poor guy’s throat for the past five minutes, I’m not sure. Suddenly heavy petting seemed to be terribly unfair on both of us.

Cole sucked the lobe of my ear into his mouth. I dropped my hands and clasped his hips, pulling his thighs so he was clasped against me, grinding against me. We definitely needed to be naked and soon.

When he moved one hand to cup me between the legs, I whimpered. I hoped to God that Cole realised I had changed my mind on the whole sex versus heavy petting question because I wasn’t sure if I was capable of speech.

He moved his free hand to circle my nipple with his thumb, sending a spear of want to my already aching groin. I arched into his touch and I could feel his smile against my neck before he brushed my nipple again.

Yeah, we were going all the way.

He pulled me away from the counter slightly and tweaked the button of my jeans, lowering the zip and pushing his hand under the denim but not under the cotton of the knickers he’d bought at the supermarket earlier.

“Cole, I need you. Not just heavy petting. Much further,” I urged, aware we were already at third base. Coles’ throaty chuckle against my neck tickled and made me grind my ass harder against his groin.

“You’re already gettin’ wet, honey.” God, his accent was really thick. “You’re gonna be drippin’ by the time I enter you.” His fingers played over my flesh, rubbing in a circle over my clit. I laid my head back on his chest and moved my hips into the motion. It had been a while since fingers other than my own had been down there and his seemed more expert than mine.

Cole Macallan
Cole Macallan is an all-American guy. He’s a cowboy through and through. He grew up on a huge ranch in Texas and is the eldest son of an oil magnate. He has a younger brother and a younger sister. He loves horses, NASCAR and watching the Dallas Cowboys.

At the age of sixteen though, Cole was being prepared to take over the family business and was sitting in on business meetings with his father.

Cole attended Duke University and studied Business. He didn’t have much choice as he was going to inherit the largest share of his family’s business which had a turnover of around $20 million a year. When he was in his second year of college, his father died of a heart attack and Cole became CEO of the company. He finished college as his uncles took care of the company until he graduated. Now he’s one of the GQ’s Top 50 bachelors in America.

Rhona Lorimer
Rhona Lorimer is smart, sassy and cute but she’s never lived up to her potential. Unfortunately life keeps happening to her and it seems to keep knocking her on her ass. She’s an only child and really was a daddy’s girl. Her mum was never the nurturing type and hated living in the tiny village of Strathdougal, an hour south of Scotland’s largest city, Glasgow.

Rhona didn’t stick in well at school and messed up her exams in her final year, not gaining enough qualifications to go to university. So she became her dad’s apprentice. He was estate manager to Lord Macallan, who owned the Castle, manor house and estate round Strathdougal. It was then she noticed her dad becoming forgetful. That was when her mum upped and left.

To cut a long story short, Rhona’s dad is now in a home, Rhona has his job and Lord Macallan died, leaving the estate to some American guy whom she has never met. To top it all, there’s no cash, the manor house is in a state of disrepair and the castle is a ruin. Once again, she seems to be sitting on her butt in a muddy puddle.

Author Bio:
Em lives in the small village of Dundonald (which features in An American Cowboy in Scotland) in Ayrshire, Scotland. She regularly visits Dundonald Castle for coffee, cakes, inspiration and chat. When she’s not writing historical, contemporary and vampire romances, she’s trotting around the country to film and TV conventions, hob-nobbing with celebrities and avoiding housework.

Em is still waiting for her own Colonel Brandon to come along but since she’s sick of kissing frogs, she’s quite content to hog the TV remote and have the whole sofa to herself.

Wonderlust by BL Wilde

Title: Wonderlust
Author: BL Wilde
Series: Steel Roses #1
Genre: Erotic Romance
Release Date: August 1, 2015
Cover designer: Laurynne Gouws
Summary:
Natasha White has always been unlucky in love. The men she falls for only want one thing from her, and it isn't commitment. When her boss and on/off fling announces his engagement to another woman, she finds herself running from her feelings for him by taking a job as a personal assistant to the legendary rock god, Alex Harbour €”half a world away.

Her new boss is sexy, damaged, and insatiable, but Natasha has been a fan since she was a young girl. Conflicted by her emotions, she begins a love/hate relationship with the egotistical rock star.

Alex's intentions toward her are clear from the moment they meet, but Natasha isn't about to run from one emotionless connection to another. She is determined to keep her distance from her childhood crush, by any means necessary.

When lust begins to cloud her mind, however, she becomes hell bent on protecting her heart. What good could ever come out of falling for a rock star, anyway?

As much as I have loved all of Miss Wilde's previous writings, I went into this one with no expectations.  Well, despite having no preconceived ideas, she has done it again.  Wonderlust is definitely a romance for the adult reader but don't let that fool you, there is so much more than just the hotness levels which are off the chart.  Sometimes characters are real but still don't seem like anyone the average person might know, but Natasha and Alex are real.  They may not live the life that most of us know but as people they could easily be your next door neighbor and friend.  Wonderlust will definitely satisfy your thirst for love, passion, all kinds of hotness, but above all it will satisfy your want for a well written story.

RATING:

“You’re pretty good at handling the media,” Alex mused once we’d taken our seats inside the cinema. “You sure know how to put them in their place. I think that was the most effortless set of interviews I’ve ever had.”
“I have a love, hate relationship with them. I don’t mind being abrupt when they overstep their mark.”
“That’s a little like us.” I had to giggle at that. “You look really beautiful tonight, Nat.”
“Maybe you should keep your eyes on the stage instead of on me.” I smirked, brushing of his comment while we watched the director and main leads take the stage. I tried to collect my thoughts, but Alex Harbour had just called me beautiful.
So many people acknowledged Alex as they wandered past us. Some stopped to congratulate him on the song for the soundtrack. I, myself, was disappointed with the song. It had a more pop feel than rock. To me, it was like he’d sold out on this track. It wasn’t the real him.
My mouth fell open when Adam Rider came over and had a quick chat with us. He was ‘the’ Hollywood actor at the moment, and gazing up at him, I could see why.  The man was almost as sexy as Alex, with his dark, almost black hair, deep chocolate eyes and sexy irish accent. He wore a tux just as well, too.
“When are you going to take that jump into the film industry, Alex?” he asked, darting his eyes toward me.
“That’s never going to happen, Adam. Music is my love. We’ve had this conversation before.”
“And who is this? I don’t think we’ve been introduced.” Adam held my gaze, the same way Alex did the first time I met him. Celebrities of their caliber always had that effect on me, knocking me breathless with their beauty. It was a surreal moment to realize they were real people, not just a perfect face in a magazine or on TV.
“I…I…I’m Natasha White,” I stuttered, taking his hand when he offered it to me.
“It’s a pleasure to meet you, Natasha,” he cooed, kissing the back of my hand. Hollywood actors…were they all this smooth?  “I’m not used to seeing Alex with such a sophisticated woman.”  Now I was blushing.
“Natasha is my new personal assistant.” Alex’s tone was sharp as he shot daggers at Adam. “You better take your seat, Adam. It looks like they’re going to start.”
“I need to find my date anyway. Good talking with you, Alex. Natasha.” Gracefully, he disappeared into the crowd in search of his seat.
“Wow,” I gasped, holding my chest. “I just met Adam Rider.”
“Are you a fan of his?” Alex didn’t seem that interested in my answer. He was busy playing with the arm of his chair.
“Who isn’t a fan of his? I heard he turned down the lead role in this film we’re seeing tonight.”
“I wouldn’t know, but I’m not sure Westerns are his thing anyway.”
“Do you see him a lot? Are you good friends with him?”
“Straight Lace, do you have a crush on Mr. Hollywood? I do know him pretty well. We jam together from time to time.” He couldn’t hide his smirk. “Most actors are womanizers, though, and Adam is no different. I wouldn’t get mixed up with him.”
“I’ve heard that about rock stars, too,” I quipped. “And you definitely live up to that.”
“Maybe you need to find a more reliable source. You really don’t know me well enough to make that judgement yet.”

Adored by millions of women all over the world, Alex Harbour has the world at his feet and the ego to match. Once a front man to the legendary rock band, Steel Roses, he is now a solo artist. His lifestyle is sex, drugs and rock ‘n’ roll. Fame has corrupted his soul. No one is strong enough to help him face the demons from his past.  That is until a certain PA walks into his life.

Natasha White
All Nat wants is someone that will love her unconditionally, but she has a habit of falling for the wrong man. Maybe secretly she is scared of commitment. Half italian, she has a fiery temper and can stand up for herself. After falling for her boss she has no choice but to take a job to get some distance between them when she discovers he’s become engaged. Running away to LA to work for the rock star Alex Harbour might be the best decision she ever made, though.

1. What is the biggest influence/interest that brought you to this genre?
It was my characters from The Seductors Series. As you know Heather, the series revolves around sex. ;)  Once I started writing erotic scenes, I realised how you can bring characters even closer together through erotica.

2. When writing a book, what is your favorite part of the creative process(outline, plot, character names, editing, etc)?
I love the actual writing. All my books have never been written out how I see them in my head. I get just as excited about how it’s going to end as my readers do. LOL

3. When reading a book, what genre do you find most interesting/intriguing?
I’m a sucker for fantasy. I could never write that genre, but I have my angel and vampire stories

4. If you could co-author with any author, past or present, who would you choose?
I’ve co- authored before with Jo Matthews. Which was amazing. I have so many author friends that I’d struggle to pick one.  I’ve watched a lot of new talent come on the scene lately. Tracie Remond and Elle McKenize  are two newbie authors I’d love to work with.

5. Have you always wanted to write or did it come to you ΚΊlater in lifeΚΊ?
I’ve always wanted to be a writer. I’ve been writing since 10. I have to admit, I get better with age though. LOL

Heart's Duo by Charity Parkerson

Title: Heart's Duo
Author: Charity Parkerson
Series: Ugly Eternity #4
Genre: M/M Romance
Release Date: May 18, 2015
Publisher: Punk & Sissy Publications
Summary:
What began as a half-baked scheme to help his brother win the man of his dreams has become a tailspin Joss can’t escape. His actions and secrets have kept him from making any real claim on the woman who captured his attention months ago.

But secrets have a way of coming to light.

Maddox has known from almost the beginning Joss has been playing games with his life. What he doesn’t realize is how deep the man’s deception runs. When Cade and Dylan’s wedding reception brings everyone together in one place, the entire story is revealed with a little help from Benton.

And Hell hath no fury like a man with nothing left to lose.

The implosion Joss has braced for has finally come to pass, changing everything forever. With Jamie and Hawke in another country, enjoying their happily ever after, Maddox is about to teach Joss a valuable lesson in toying with other people’s lives.

What happens when bad decisions, manipulations, good intentions, and misunderstandings combine? It’s an Ugly Eternity.

How the pair didn’t feel all the eyes upon them, Benton couldn’t explain. They were standing close enough Benton could make out every letter of Jamie’s name spelled out in permanent ink across the inside of Hawke’s forearm. Knowing Jamie, as he did, the man couldn’t care less who was watching them. He didn’t relent until Hawke was laughing so hard no sound emerged. Benton went back to watching Maddox. There was something about the entire situation niggling at that back of his mind. Something slightly off. Maddox was so focused on the pair he’d yet to notice Benton, leaving him free to puzzle it out.
This man had cheated on Hawke, throwing everything away. By all accounts, he should’ve let this go a long time ago. He’d broken things off and moved another man in. His expression said none of those things. Benton glanced around, Hawke and Jamie were still dancing. Sophie and Joss were in the corner having an up-close discussion. How had Joss came to be with Sophie over the last few months? None of it made any sense. If Maddox had put Hawke out and moved Joss in, why would Maddox watch Hawke instead of Joss? Benton’s gaze returned to Maddox. Maddox smiled at the sight of Hawke’s laughter and Benton knew. It was exactly like someone ripped back the curtain, revealing the real story.
     “Oh my god.”
Maddox visibly startled at Benton’s cry. He couldn’t stop. The truth slammed into him with such power Benton couldn’t contain it. It brought him to his feet. Maddox lifted his glass to his lips, taking a sip. Benton wondered if the man was attempting to hide his emotions before focusing on him.
“Didn’t see you there,” Maddox said after a moment. Benton ignored Maddox’s statement of the obvious.
“Oh my god,” Benton repeated, pointing at him. He didn’t care if he looked like a madman.

Title: Stages & Thieves
Author: Danielle Claude-Ngontang
Series: Semya Slotin Mystery #5
Genre: Thriller, Romantic Suspense
Release Date: February 17, 2015
Summary:
One fateful July morning forever changed the lives of SΓ©mya Slotin and her best friend Polliannah Guryev.

Vincent Edgerton, the only man SΓ©mya has ever loved, was taken from her by an explosion and a fire that she couldn’t understand, trust, nor explain. It left her alone, hurt, angry and desperately seeking answers. On top of everything, she is also incredibly hormonal; SΓ©mya Slotin is going to be a mother.

Polliannah just healed from losing her husband but seeing her best friend grieving is not only breaking her heart, it has been a strain on their once close-knit relationship. She is afraid that SΓ©mya will completely disappear into her grief. Thankfully, Polliannah can always seek refuge with the handsome Chief Superintendent James Connelly. In the past three months, he has become her safe haven. But when they finally give in to each other and Jim reveals his true feeling for her, Polliannah pulls away.  Is she ready to put herself out there again?

Then all of the sudden, SΓ©mya, the pregnant Detective Extraordinaire is chasing art thieves across the globe, making dangerous deals and finally meeting her father… It’s all about ex-lovers and new ones, a priceless painting, con artists, baby bumps, an impromptu trip to Moscow, designer dresses, teacakes, a birthday ball and reconnecting with your roots.

With everything that has happened this year, SΓ©mya and Polliannah are more vulnerable and exposed than they have ever been. Will Jim’s love and trust be enough to ease Polliannah’s doubts? Will SΓ©mya find out what happened to Vincent?

Welcome to the Stages & Thieves saga, it’s going to be a bumpy ride.

“Isn’t your father named Ulrich? I’m not giving birth to an Ulrich. It sounds like the name of a war criminal,” she told him. Vincent released her and frowned. Me and my big, insensitive mouth… “But I’m sure your father wears it with my pride,” she said rapidly.  I’m not pregnant anyway. “I love you,” she said sheepishly when he unwound her from his body and sat upright on the bed. What, no more sexy time?
“You are so frustrating sometimes Babe,” he told her and helped her up to sit next to him. “You’re lucky I love you too.” He kissed her tenderly and caressed her hair. “My mother had the exact same reaction,” he said with a cheeky grin. “Why do you want a name starting with an S?” he asked more seriously.
SΓ©mya simply shrugged back. On her father’s side, everyone’s name started with an S, including hers. She didn’t know her paternal family, only that the Dovos were powerful, rich and dangerous. But her mother named her SΓ©mya for a reason and she would really like to know why. She put her arms around his neck. “Don’t be daft Heinz. Sasha is a name I’ve always liked. Sasha Slotin… it has a nice ring to it, don’t you think?” she asked, calling him by his alias Josh Heinz.
Vincent laughed and pulled her onto his lap. “Edgerton… my child, my name,” he told her. SΓ©mya blushed back. She might break that curse the women in her family seemed to be under. My possible baby will have a father! “But not Sasha,” he added.
SΓ©mya pouted back but involuntary purred when Vincent ran his hand over her back. Vincent kissed her, slowly at first but then he deepened the kiss, pressing her against him. His hard-defined body was fitting perfectly against her new lush curves. “What names do you have in mind then?” she moaned.
“We’re going to miss our flight,” he whispered in her ear instead and licked it. She shuddered in his arms. That was an understatement. Polliannah wasn’t going to like that. “A special name to the both of us, one that means something and symbolizes us, our love, our unique situation… how beautiful, smart, funny, stubborn, and sexy his or her mother is and how nuts about her I am,” he told her.
SΓ©mya felt a tear on her cheek. Silly hormones! “This isn’t going to be easy or even possible. Who could have such a name?”
“I cannot wait to find out… if only–” Vincent said while he was lying back on their bed.
“– I’m not taking that damn pregnancy test!” she giggled.
“First thing in London?” he asked her and kissed her nose.
“First thing in London,” SΓ©mya agreed and raised her hips to meet his. “I love you, Vincent. You’re mine and I yours…” Silly hormones!
Vincent groaned back and plunged into her. Finally… “Until my last breath SΓ©mya Louise Slotin and maybe a little after, I love you.”
SΓ©mya urgently kissed him and arched her back.  Heaven, I’m in absolute heaven…those silly hormones make me so girly…
