What is the biggest influence/interest that brought you to this genre?
Fanfiction. When I was much younger, and I had already been bitten by the writing bug, discovering fanfiction was what enabled me to be able to first finish stories and explore more how other people did. I first dipped my toes in video game fanfiction for both Final Fantasy VII and VIII, and it was there, as well as from a few anime I watched at the time, Weiss Kreuz and Saiyuki, that I started to find slash/yaoi in fandoms and explore it. At the time, I didn’t realize how much my enjoyment of it reflected my own sexual discovery and gender identity, but more and more I found myself comfortable writing male characters over female ones. And what can I say, while romance is never the sole focus of my fiction – it’s more about saving the world, saving the city, stopping the bad guy, solving the mystery, overcoming SOMETHING ELSE, and the romance is merely part of that – I cannot get enough of falling in love stories. Fanfiction brought me to that, and from there I’ve embraced it in original fiction too and found a very comfortable and fulfilling home.

When writing a book, what is your favorite part of the creative process (outline, plot, character names, editing, etc)?
Editing. But I mean the FINAL editing process. I always go back and reread chapters as I’m writing and do little edits throughout, but when the first full draft is complete and I get to start all over from the beginning reading it in its entirety, that’s my favorite part. I get to experience it all again, remember things I might have forgotten that I can tweak or add/remove, and really find the ideal version of the story I want to tell. It’s fun to read my own work, enjoy all over again the parts I loved, and find ways to make it better. I think that explains why I love editing for others so much. It’ll always be my favorite part of the writing process.

When reading a book, what genre do you find most interesting/intriguing?
I like smaller, self-contained stories. Ongoing series with huge casts really turn me off. But my favorite genre to read regardless is also my favorite to write – urban fantasy. Taking something of our own real world and making it magical. My favorite books show that too, like Good Omens and the first few novels in the Night Watch series. It’s rare that I’m interested in contemporary fiction without something fantastical to it, because I get enough of ‘normal’ in real life. I want escape. I want to lose myself in a different world where anything is possible, from wizards to superheroes to modern-day vampires.

If you could co-author with any author, past or present, who would you choose?
Honestly, I think it would be fascinating if H.P. Lovecraft was around today, and by being born today, would hopefully be a better kind of person, not mired in the unfortunate things I’ve heard of him, but someone more open-minded, because being able to take all those crazy ideas of his and make something more suited for today, maybe even making it M/M romance or tackling more of today’s issues, could be incredible. And on that note… stay tuned for a new novel coming out from K.L. Hiers this August, Acsquidentally In Love. It basically is just that and makes me squee uncontrollably.

Have you always wanted to write or did it come to you "later in life"?
Yep, for as long as I can remember. When I was really young and first learning to read, being the youngest in my family by several years, I spent a lot of time playing alone, using my imagination to come up with stories. As soon as I could write, I did. It wasn’t until I reached my teens, however, that I was able to turn my love of storytelling into something concrete, because until then, I could never finish an idea. I just kept having them, but I never finished a story. That again was where fanfiction saved me. It let me ‘practice’, if you will, on established characters with shorter premises, until I was ready to really tackle longer, epic tales. By college I was writing thousands upon thousands of words a year for various stories – and finishing them. I always think of the great quote from Sister Act 2:

“I went to my mother, who gave me this book called Letters to a Young Poet. Rainer Maria Rilke. He's a fabulous writer. A fellow used to write to him and say: ‘I want to be a writer. Please read my stuff.’ And Rilke says to this guy: ‘Don't ask me about being a writer. If when you wake up in the morning, you can think of nothing but writing… then you're a writer."

I guess I’m a writer. ^_^

Coming Up for Air
Summary:
It’s not easy being someone’s fairy tale.

Leigh Hurley is making a name for himself among thieves and criminals, even if it isn’t the life he would’ve chosen. He shouldn’t have screwed over the Moretti brothers, though. It landed him in the river with weights on his feet. But somehow he’s escaped certain death. The last thing he remembers before waking on the riverbank is a beautiful face and a soft kiss.

Then, Tolomeo turns up naked at Leigh’s apartment.

Tolly comes from a race of killers—merfolk who drown humans for fun. But Tolly is different, and when he sees a human in trouble, he offers a kiss, granting the man the ability to breathe underwater… and himself the ability to walk on land, at least until the next full moon. The ancient laws state that if he is given a vow of love by the one he kissed, he will be able to keep his legs. If not, he will be put to death when he returns to the water.

But love is not something Leigh offers easily… and Tolly has a secret of his own.

And can real feelings develop while money is changing hands? Owen and Cal might get to the root of their true feelings... if their pasts don’t interfere.

Interpretive Hearts
Summary:
Love is easy once you learn the steps.

In the competitive world of dance, Teddy was a flawless performer and hardass choreographer who students feared and admired in equal measure. But hip surgery ended the glamour and drama, and now Teddy is recovering at his beach house, lost and listless.

Until he meets Finn, his neighbor, who is too perfect, gorgeous, and kind to exist—but very ill timed. In a seaside town as small as theirs, they can’t avoid each other, especially since Finn is also Teddy’s new physical therapist. But Teddy isn’t the man he used to be, and though Finn flirts shamelessly with him, Teddy can’t believe a has-been dancer is worthy of someone so young and full of life.

Finn’s sunny smile is also hiding heartache. Pursuing Teddy challenges both his professionalism and his self-preservation, but if he can convince Teddy to trust him, maybe they both can heal.

After Vertigo
Summary:
Heroes aren’t born, they’re made – sometimes reluctantly.

In a flash, the world changed. A solar flare—later dubbed Vertigo—activated the DNA of more than half the world’s people, granting them special abilities. Brilliant scientist Benjamin Krane might be Powerless, but his inventions are the only thing giving the police a fighting chance against super-powered evil. Ben doesn’t have much of a life beyond work, and when he gets wind of a robbery one evening, he decides to test his newest invention personally….

A thief, rogue, and shameless flirt, Grey Miller—aka the Streak—likes shiny things, but he doesn’t hurt people. When Ben catches him—and proposes they team up against the real bad guys—Grey doesn’t know whether it’s the offer or the man he can’t resist. But one thing’s for sure—they’re an ideal match in more ways than one.

With a psychotic supervillain’s catastrophic plan moving forward and everyone he cares about in danger, now might not be the best time for Ben to give in to Grey’s seduction, no matter how tempting. Grey is a man of secrets, and if Ben wants a future with him, he’ll have to learn to trust Grey—and himself.

Lovesick Gods
Summary:
Lovesick #1
Heroes aren’t meant to act like their villains—or fall in love with them.

The elements touch everyone on Earth—Fire, Water, even Light—but every so often someone becomes more attuned to their elemental leaning and develops true power. When an evil Elemental known as Thanatos arrived in Olympus City, it saw the rise of its first hero—Zeus. But the death toll caused by defeating Thanatos changed Zeus, who by day is young detective Danny Grant.

It’s been six months since Thanatos terrorized the city at the start of Lovesick Gods. Danny should be used to his duty behind the mask, but the recent past haunts him. His girlfriend left him, he snaps at the barest provocation, his life feels empty—he needs an outlet, any outlet to pull him out of his depression.

Enter notorious thief Malcolm Cho, the Ice Elemental Prometheus. There was a time when Danny welcomed a fight with Cho, filled with colorful banter and casual flirtations that were a relief compared to Thanatos. Even as a criminal, Cho had recognized the threat Thanatos posed and promised to help Danny stop him, but the day Danny needed Cho, he never showed. Cho was the reason so many people died that day—including Danny’s mother.

Danny decides to teach the man a lesson and fan the fire of their attraction into something more. At worst, he’ll get some no-strings-attached sex out of the deal and finally blow off steam; at best, he’ll get Cho to fall in love with him and then break his heart to spite him.

Danny doesn’t expect to fall for Cho in the process, and he certainly can’t predict the much darker threat on the horizon.

Blog Tour: After Felix by Lily Morton

Title: After Felix
Author: Lily Morton
Series: Close Proximity #3
Genre: M/M Romance
Release Date: August 2, 2020

Summary:
Sometimes the best love stories come in two parts.

When Felix met handsome journalist Max Travers, it was lust at first sight. It was just his luck that he then had to develop a terrible case of feelings and got his heart broken. However, two and a half years later, he’s over all of that. His job is going well, he has good friends, and he doesn’t lack for male company. Which, of course, is when Max has to come bursting back into his life.

Felix Jackson will always be the one who got away to Max. He’s spent their time apart regretting his actions and hoping for a second chance. When an accident lands him in Felix’s less than tender care, Max is determined to grab this opportunity. The only problem is that Felix is equally determined that he doesn’t.

From bestselling author, Lily Morton comes a story of missed opportunities, second chances, and two very stubborn men. This is the third book in the Close Proximity series, but it can be read as a standalone.

“How old do you think I am?” he says mock flirtatiously, leaning in close enough that I catch his scent of sandalwood. It brings back memories of rolling all over those soft sheets in that hotel room. I’ve been perturbed to find my mind straying to memories of that room a few more times than it should have over the last week.

He’s watching me intently again, and I swallow hard and tap my teeth thoughtfully. “I think probably sixty.” He opens his mouth in mock horror, and I laugh. “Only because you’re so wise,” I say reverently. “Being intelligent really piles the years on.”

He shakes his head. “I’m thirty-seven,” he says, trying not to laugh. “Can you see my crow’s feet?”

“A crow never made those lines. That’s surely got to be a bigger bird.” I wink at him as he laughs loudly. I eye the table where a book is sitting next to his pint. “What are you reading?”

He looks slightly awkward. “Ruth Rendell.”

“Oh, Inspector Wexford. My grandma used to watch those on the telly,” I say cheerfully.

“Thank you so much for that information,” he says darkly. “It’s made my day so happy.”

I laugh. “It’s like I carry sunshine wherever I go.” I eye him. “So, do you like reading crime novels?”

“I do.” He smiles. “I’ve always thought it would be incredibly easy to murder someone and get away with it, so I like it that people get found out in these books.”

I blink. “Said no man ever who hoped to get laid.”

He laughs. “I’m not going to murder you, Felix. Your arse is far too perky for that to happen.”

“I always knew my buttocks could save a life.”

He bites his lip, laughter brewing in those dark eyes as he leans forward. “The only way I’ll kill you is when you die from an overdose of the pleasure that my cock gives you.”

After draining my drink, I put the bottle on the table and stand up to grab my coat. “Pride goes before a fall, Max,” I say. “Maybe we’d better get you back to the hotel before you break something.”

Monday's Mysterious Mayhem: 🎧The Boy Next Door Audiobook🎧 by Josh Lanyon

Summary:
For the last fourteen years, former celebrated Boy Detective Merle Madison has been trying to build a grown-up career for himself as a private investigator. There are just two problems: there’s not a lot of serious crime in the small town of Hayvenhurst—and Police Chief Isaac Ramsay keeps denying Merle’s application for a PI license.

Merle and Isaac have history, some good and some bad, so when someone seems determined to put Merle out of business—permanently—he naturally turns to his former sidekick for help.

But Isaac’s days of playing second fiddle to a Junior Sherlock Holmes are long past. In fact, Merle will be lucky if Isaac doesn’t kill him himself.

Audiobook Review August 2020:
It's been over 2-1/2 years since I read The Boy Next Door and it's just as brilliant now as it was then.  I love Merle and Isaac's interactions both good and bad, history and now, friendship and romance, work and play, and everything in between.  Beyond that there really isn't anything I can add to my original review that still won't spoil the story.  As for the narration? Kale Williams brings life to Merle and Isaac beautifully.  The chemistry is real, the anger, frustration, and heart is all there.  The Boy Next Door may be short but it's an amazing package of mystery, romance, and just the right amount of humor to make it an entertaining gem to be re-read/listened for years to come.

Original ebook Review January 2018:
Merle Madison found early fame as celebrated Boy Detective and he's been trying to find the same fame as an adult private detective, too bad his former friend, sidekick, and more Isaac Ramsey has denied his application for a license.  That hasn't stopped Merle though and now it seems someone has taken exception to his skills.  Will Isaac help Merle out before its too late or has the Boy Detective pushed the police chief too far?

First off, The Boy Next Door is a short story and its brilliant.  There was a time when I would never give a short story top marks, it was just instinctual to knock off at least 1/2 a mark if not a whole one just for its shortness.  I had nothing against short stories/novellas but in truth I am a full-length novel kinda gal at heart.  Somewhere along the line I began to realize that I was missing out on many brilliant stories and authors and was shortchanging the ones I was reading.  A tale's brilliance is not in it's length, entertainment is a question of quality not quantity.  Having said all that I reiterate: The Boy Next Door by Josh Lanyon is brilliant and that has nothing to do with my love of everything written by Josh Lanyon. Add in that this completely slipped my radar when it first came out so you can imagine what an after holiday treat this was to jump start the new year.

I never really read any Hardy Boys or Nancy Drew when I was younger, I watched them but never read them.  Merle and Isaac may not be the Hardy Boys but I couldn't help but remember some of my childhood memories of watching them as I read Boy.  I really won't touch on the plot because as it is a short story even the little things can be too much but I will say this:

  1. Thank you, Josh Lanyon for bringing back those Saturday afternoon Hardy Boys memories.
  2. I'm already looking forward to a Christmas Coda or two starring Merle and Isaac.
  3. I know Miss Lanyon probably doesn't have plans for anything beyond a Coda for these boys but if down the road they have another case to tell her about, I'd be first in line to read their next adventure.

Merle and Isaac have this second chance(third or fourth perhapsπŸ˜‰) edge to the story which left me wanting to knock their heads together more than once but it also endeared them to me. If you have never read Josh Lanyon before than this will make a wonderful introduction and if you are like me and already a huge fan, than you will certainly enjoy this little ditty.  The Boy Next Door may be short on pages but its packed to overflowing with friendship, arguments, romance, nostalgia, and of course a little mystery tied all together with just the right amount of humor to brighten any day.  When a book can make you scream "OMG!" out of frustration, laughter, and warmth when you are so NOT an OMG-kinda gal, you know you found a winner.

RATING:

Prologue
Warm lips moving on mine, passionately, insistently.

I knew those lips. I knew that kiss.

Isaac…

Moist breath pushing into my mouth, filling my lungs.

Inhale.

Exhale.

We breathed in unison. Quiet. Intimate. Yes.

Inhale.

Exhale.

Isaac, I love you. I really do. I miss you so much…

From down a long tunnel a voice said, “He’s breathing on his own, Chief.”

And I’m really, truly sorry…

Inhale.

Exhale.

And from now on—

Waaaait a minute.

Chief?

That wasn’t right. I wanted Isaac, not Chief.

“Chief?” Once more the word hollowly echoed down long, empty corridors. “Chief?”

I murmured protest. The mouth fervently pressing mine withdrew.

I unstuck my eyelids, stared dazedly up. Bits of black floated in the evening air. Red embers drifted down like glowing snowflakes. In front of a kaleidoscope of ragged black-edged treetops was a ring of grim faces gazing down at me—and the grimmest face of all was that of Police Chief Ramsay. I thought I could see tiny twin flames dancing in his eyes.

I unstuck my lips. I’m not sure what I wanted to say. I can explain everything?

I probably owed him an explanation or two.

In the distance came an alarming tearing-away sort of sound. The cops all turned to watch in silence as my neighbor Dick Chekhov’s plastic Santa—still sitting in its red plastic sleigh—plummeted in flames from his rooftop.

As Santa’s sleigh crunched nose-first in the frosty grass, Isaac swung back to me.

“Goddamn it, Merle,” he roared. “What did I say? What did I tell you? I’m done warning you. This time I’m throwing your ass in jail.”

I tried to sit up. “On what charges?”

“Malfeasance. Obstruction of justice. How about that? Interfering with a police investigation. That’s a good one. Conducting business without a license. Disturbing the peace. Public nuisance. How about menace to society? That fits. Don’t worry about it. I’ll find something. There won’t be any shortage of charges when I get done with you…”

Week at a Glance: 8/10/20 - 8/16/20

Sunday's Safe Word Shelf: Run Free by Colette Davison

Title: Run Free
Author: Colette Davison
Genre: M/M/M Romance, Paranormal, mpreg
Release Date: August 4, 2020

Summary:
They believe they only need each other, until they collide with their soul mate.

Jax is an omega, Hugo is human, and their love is forbidden. They’ve spent the last seven years on the streets, relying on no one but each other.

When they collide with Dominic, they realise something has always been missing. Jax is keen to get to know the alpha, but Hugo resists the mate-call, worrying that, as a human, there will be no room for him.

The only way they can be free to love each other is to escape the UK, but will Dominic leave his life behind to find home with two younger men?

Run Free is an alternate universe MMM shifter novel, with fated mates, mpreg, an age-gap relationship, and a happy ending.

As they rounded a corner, Jax collided with a muscular guy in a smart suit. The hairs on the back of Hugo’s arms stood up as a pulse of electricity swept through him. He grabbed Jax’s arm, steadying him so he didn’t fall.

“We’ve got to go,” he hissed, tugging his lover’s arm.

Jax didn’t move. He was staring at the man in the suit, breathing harshly. The shopkeeper’s yells were getting closer, yet Hugo couldn’t resist glancing at the man they’d bumped into. He found himself noticing every tiny detail in a matter of seconds. The guy was gorgeous, with dark hair that had been cut into a short, neat style and grey eyes with a dark brown ring around the pupil. His cheekbones were sharp and pronounced, and he had a couple days’ worth of stubble. He smelt of rainy days and damp moss. Hugo’s stare tracked to the man’s neck, where he saw the rice grain-sized bump of a chip beneath his skin. He was a shifter. Judging by the man’s size and the way Jax was quivering, he had to be an alpha. Hugo felt like he was being pulled towards the man, which was a dangerous sensation, considering how close the shopkeeper’s shouts sounded.

“We’ve got to go,” Hugo insisted, tugging Jax harder. They couldn’t get caught.

“Go,” the alpha said.

His voice was deep and velvety, the kind of voice you could listen to all day and not get bored of. It was a voice Hugo could happily get wrapped up in. Damn, why was he thinking that way, and why was his skin tingling in the alpha’s presence?

He shook himself.

“Run,” the man told them in a commanding growl, stepping aside so he was no longer blocking the path.

Jax pushed him forward, and suddenly, they were running again. Hugo felt a sickening wrench in his stomach, which made him falter, but he quickly found his feet again. Nothing mattered but getting as far away from the shopkeeper as possible.
