Monday's Musical Melody: Summer Drifter by RJ Scott

Summary:

Whisper Ridge, Wyoming #2
One man craves family, the other isolation; neither of them was searching for love.

Experienced and much-in-demand horse trainer Levi doesn't need or want people. With his horse and dog at his side, he lives out of his trailer and trains horses in the summer to earn just enough to head south for winter. Infrequent hook-ups with no-tell cowboys takes care of sex, but the moment any connection gets anywhere near complicated, he moves on. Losing a lover to violence has taught him that if he's alone he can't get hurt, and in return, he avoids the pain of loss. Everything in his easy-going life is on track until he knocks over Quinn, a pink-haired stranger who pirouettes in front of his truck, sits in his lap and calls him cowboy with the sexiest voice he's ever heard. Anger turns to frustration, lust turns to love, and by the end of the summer, Levi doesn't know which way to turn.

Quinn loses everything when the cops find his brother's body on the remains of a compound that belonged to a cult. Damaged and vulnerable, Max had been the only safe place for Quinn in his otherwise cold family, but finding out that Max might have had a son sends Quinn to Wyoming and the Lennox Ranch. When he's knocked to the ground on day one at the ranch, he wonders if maybe he should have thought things through better. After all, he'd bought two horses and a house to get close enough to Lennox ranch just to see if he was an uncle. He craves love, connection and is excited to be part of a family, searching for a place where he can finally stop running. He never meant to fall for the closed-off cowboy, but somehow Levi steals his heart and Quinn falls in love.

I have no excuses for why it took my nearly 3 years to read Summer Drifter.  I loved the first book in the Whisper Ridge, Wyoming series, Winter Cowboy, when it first released back in 2018 and I remember being ecstatic to find book 2 was finally coming. When I say "finally" I don't begrudge the author on the delay because the author can only go where the characters take them and I respect that, I use "finally" only to express the level of YAY I was experiencing. If you must have a reason so that you don't think I was disappointed in the blurb here it is: in 2020 I turned to more viewing forms of distraction to get through Covid and it really put a whopper of a kibosh on my reading mojo which if I'm 100% honest has only just returned to any semblance of pre-pandemic levels and the summer of 2021 found my mother in hospital and me in a hotel for 108 days(non-covid reasons) so there were many books that normally would have been immediate reads finding themselves nearly buried in my never-ending TBR list.

So back to Summer Drifter.

As stated above the delay had nothing to do with unhappiness with the book blurb, truth is, though I think in my heart Micah and Daniel will forever hold the top spot in the Whisper Ridge shelf I do think this overall story drew me in more.  I think that all comes down to the "cowboy norms" being a bit knocked on it's side when it comes to Quinn and Levi and their personalities, in and out of the bedroom.  I've read others where they don't always follow the stereotypical guidelines(for lack of a better, simpler phrase) but there was just something about these two men that I found refreshing.  Maybe it was the blending of stereotyping and knocked on their backside that did it, a certain level of what I call snark and cuddle, or maybe it was just because the anticipation and adrenaline rush from having waited so long?  Whatever "it" was, "it" blew me away.

As for Levi and Quinn?  There are definite moments of lack-of-communication drama but I get it, I understand that neither exactly have the history that screams "Open up to him!" "Be honest!" "He(or they in Quinn's case of wanting to see connections to his deceased brother) will understand!". Let's face it, without drama life can be boring and without fictional drama books can be vacation pamphlets.  Quinn may be a fish out of water at the Lennox Ranch but his free spirit is something we can all use a little of in our lives.  Levi guards his heart by not letting anyone in but when a certain pink-haired stranger falls in his lap Levi is in trouble.  Together they may look opposites attract but deep down the things that made them protect their hearts and family is what proves they may not be as opposite as appearances thought.

Summer Drifter may have been a long time wait for me but boy was it worth it and I'm so glad I didn't let it fall further down my TBR list. A winning gem all the way around.

RATING:

Chapter One
Quinn
Last Fall
“Alexander.”

“Quinn,” I corrected my father.

His lips thinned at the deliberate slight. I was named for an entire family tree of Alexanders, each one of them more messed up than the one before. I’d taken to using my middle name as a way of distancing myself from painful memories, and from a family I didn’t belong to.

I took a seat on the empty side of the conference table, facing my father, Alexander Dawson Senior, former senator, liar, abuser, and head of Dawson Pharma, plus his lawyer, a conniving asshole called Yan. My mouth was dry, my stomach heaving, my chest tight, but I took a breath and tucked my hair behind my ear. My father’s eyes narrowed at the gesture and that simple reaction helped me to center myself. I’d dyed it the brightest purple I could find, my eyes were smoky with liner, and my lips berry-red, this was me—the me my father hated.

Hate might’ve been a strong word, but it wasn’t as though he loathed me in a way that was fixable, where one day we’d magically make up, hold hands, and skip around declaring our rediscovered connection. He detested me for the fact I wasn’t his biological son, although he’d never admit it and the fact I was gay.

I’d hated him right back for the longest time, despite years of therapy. But if I was going to survive then I had to shut my heart to my toxic family, and I would be done. We’d buried my brother seven days ago, and as soon as the earth fell on him I was finished with the life that had been carefully planned for me. Maybe it was the way my father stood by the grave and showed no sign of emotion, or it could have been that I’d finally gotten through the fog that surround me, but I’d gone through my life in a daze, manipulated by my parents, expectation laid on me so thick I couldn’t breathe.

“You want to tell us what the fuck you want, Alexander?” my father asked, lifting a brow in question. He wanted me to be the silent shareholder, supporting his votes, working the fact that the Dawson family still had the majority share in Dawson Pharma.

Well, they did until thirty minutes ago.

“Will your lawyer be joining us?” Yan peered at the door as if he was expecting someone to enter.

“No.” I didn’t need a lawyer for what I was doing here—hell, the team I’d hired was busy dispersing money right now.

“Is that wise?” the lawyer commented, and then glanced at his boss who rolled his eyes. My father was not a subtle man. “We’re not aware of any issues that need addressing.”

“Yan, you wouldn’t believe the issues I have here, but none of them need a lawyer sitting next to me.” My heart pounded as I fronted them. “I think you should leave.”

My father snorted a laugh and stared at me. “He’s not going anywhere.” I knew my father better than most people did. I’d seen him at his worst, and I knew that tone—it was dripping with contempt. My fight-or-flight instincts kicked in, terror lodging in my chest, but I forced myself to breathe through it.

He can’t hurt me anymore.

“I’ve sold every single one of my shares in Dawson Pharma, including the ones I inherited from Max’s estate. Twenty-two percent in total. Gone.”

A muscle twitched by my father’s eye, shock clear as day in his expression, and then his jaw tightened, and he sneered at me.

“The fuck you have,” he snapped.

“Antitrust,” Yan offered immediately.

“No,” I said with calm. “There are no antitrust issues. Williams, Byers, and Green are seeing to that.”

Yan paled at the name of the prestigious firm of antitrust lawyers. Even with his own team, plus the million dollar retainer I know my father paid him, he was small fry compared to them. Yan glanced at my father, and his expression was desperate when he faced me again. “We’re prepared to pay over the offer you accepted—”

“The fuck we are,” my father roared. “Get the hell out of here, Yan.”

“As your representation I—”

“I said leave.”

Yan looked as if he was going to argue again, but then he left me and my father alone. Alexander Dawson Senior never took his eyes off me as he stood, and I stared right back, aware of how far I was from the exit and that there was security I could call if this went south. He stalked around the table to me, but I held up a hand.

He vibrated with anger, this big bear of a man who was half a foot taller than me and fifty pounds heavier—a ticking time bomb of fury.

“What did you do, boy?”

“Sold every single share.”

“You waste of fucking space!” my father snarled, but then his anger gave way to a practised smugness. “You won’t have the time to spend any of that money when I take you for every penny you made.” Threatening anything with money was his go-to step when his entire world revolved around the almighty dollar. Without the shares that myself and Max held, he wouldn’t own the board anymore, and the way he stared at me, I know he was fully aware of that fact. He was trying to regain control, thinking he could work his way around the law and get back the shares. I’d seen him do things like that before, which is why Williams, Byers, and Green were in my corner.

I feigned a calm. “That threat only works when I actually want the money I made, but every single cent is currently being dispersed to charities.”

“Why would you do that to your family?”

“Is that the same family that sent me to a camp? Or the father who hit me so hard I lost consciousness, who broke my arm, tried to kill me when I was eight—“

The time bomb exploded, and he grabbed me by the throat and pushed me up against the wall, my feet leaving the floor. Blackness consumed me, and I saw stars when my head hit the paneling. Now this was the father I knew, the horrific demon inside the urbane businessman who could trick everyone else. This was the man one who abused my brother and I with hands and words since I was old enough to understand pain.

“I will fucking destroy you,” he roared. He tightened his grip and I saw spots in my vision, but my words were nothing more than a whisper. He released me so fast I hit the floor hard and my hands went to my throat, pressing the pain he’d caused, just to ground myself.

“You don’t scare me!” I choked for a breath as tears of pain filled my eyes. “I can… prison… fuck you.”

Maybe prison was enough of a trigger word to break through his hatred and he went straight for verbal abuse as a defense.

“Fucking waste of space. Look at you crying,” he sneered, as I tried to breathe. “You’re as weak as Max was.”

“He was a better person than you will ever be.” I wasn’t going to let this monster know my pain at hearing my brother’s name spat with such venom.

“Fucking queer,” he yelled in my face, but there was fear in him; I could almost smell it.

I stood my ground. Name-calling was the last resort, and I’d heard way worse in my years under his roof. I wasn’t going to lie down and take his shit anymore because it was poison and I’d been slowly dying.

“I have enough on you to put you inside for a very long time. Names, dates, pictures of what you did to me, evidence of the shit you’ve pulled. You come near me, and I will release every single fucked up secret behind Dawson Pharma doors.” I straightened my back.

“You little shit, you can’t—”

“We’re done.” I backed out of the door and stalked past my dad’s bewildered PA, then headed to the rear exit and stepped out into the cool Boston fall. Even though my emotions crashed and burned the tears still didn’t fall.

I caught a flash in my peripheral vision, and winced, thinking the paparazzi had realised I would leave through the back entrance, but it was just the sun glinting off the huge monstrosity that was the head office of Dawson Pharma. My fear of getting photographed, or hurt, was real, and I took random sidewalks to reach my car in the underground parking lot three blocks from the office, before locking myself inside. Too many times the media had tracked me for something that my father had done, and I was finished with it all.

I couldn’t do it anymore.

And the tears fell.

From icy control I couldn’t stop crying, gripping the wheel for support and letting years of pain and grief well up and roll down my face in burning tears. I wanted Max back with every beat of my desperately miserable heart, and I’d held hope for so long, thinking Max would come home, but he hadn’t. My brother was dead and the hope was gone. Everything was gone.

A loud thump hit the window, and a man peered in. He wouldn’t be able to see me through the tinted glass but I hated that he was even near me.

“Fuck you,” I shouted. I didn’t recognize him, and fear knifed through me. I didn’t know all the media vultures by sight, and I was alone in a dimly lit parking area and this could be anyone out to hurt me, because of my name or money.

“I’m here to help you,” the man called, then knocked again. “My name is Connor.”

“Leave me the fuck alone!” I started the engine and checked the mirrors to reverse, hoping to hell he moved out of the way so I didn’t run him over.

He slammed a photo on my windshield, then moved it just as quick. “This is about Max.”

I reacted blindly to the photo and my brother’s name, and with 911 ready on speed dial, I lowered the window a crack. I don’t care what this asshole wanted to say about me, but if he planned on dragging my brother’s name through the mud then I was ready for a fight. Hell, if this stranger wanted an interview then I’d give them one before running them the fuck over.

Connor peered through the crack. Was he armed? He didn’t seem to have a gun pointing at me, or a camera. At this point I didn’t know which was worse. “Alexander, please, I have something I need to show you.”

“Then show me.”

I heard Connor muttering, saw him frown, before he slid the photo through the small gap. It slithered to the floor, and I leaned over to pick it up, seeing writing on the back but ignoring it to check the photo. Part of me expected a blackmail image, but instead it was a simple photo of my big brother, Max. He was maybe six or seven here, standing next to a horse, but I didn’t recognize the shot, and turned it over to see information.

Laurence Lennox, Lennox Ranch, Wyoming. It was dated only two years ago, which didn’t make sense.

“What do you want?” I asked, confusion making me frown.

“Can we please just talk?” Connor asked from outside. He had his forehead against the window and he looked destroyed. “My cousin Natalie was at the commune where your brother died. Please, let me in.” He didn’t seem to be threatening me, in fact I thought he seemed close to tears, and I did the singularly most stupid thing I’d ever done. If he killed me then whatever, it wasn’t as if I cared about anything today. I released the locks, and the dark-haired man slipped inside then shut the door. I locked us in again because I could handle one man, but if he had accomplices…

“Connor Mason, PI,” he introduced himself, and we shook hands. “I don’t know where to start,” he murmured.

I tucked my hair behind my ear, my hands shaky with adrenaline. “How about you give me an executive overview?”

“Your dad hired me to find Max.”

Shock gripped me? This was another one of my dad’s lackeys. I unlocked the car and shoved at him. “Get the fuck out.”

“No—”

I connected to 911, but he reached over and pressed end call. For a second we tussled, and then he slumped back in the seat. “Actually, you know what? Call the cops because I’ve got nothing to hide. But you have.”

“What?” This wasn’t making sense, but I hesitated to pull in the cops when he said I had something to hide. What did he mean?

“There are things I never told your dad. I don’t work for him anymore. I want you to trust me… you have to trust me.”

“I don’t have to trust anyone. What do you want to say?”

He was relieved, but there was some hesitation in him, as if he was going to tell me the absolute worst of news and he didn’t want to. After a pause he exhaled noisily.

“I never told your dad what I found, even though he’d been the one to hire me. I had a bad feeling about him. He said he didn’t want Max to come home, that I had to track Max down and tell him so.” Why didn’t that surprise me? Our father didn’t want Max or me. “I was told in no uncertain terms that he wanted me to make sure Max stayed away. That there was a bonus if no one saw him again.” There was so much innuendo in that simple sentence. “So, what I’m telling you now… I’m trusting you with this because I’ve been watching you. I saw you at the funeral.”

“You were at the funeral?” I hadn’t seen him, but grief had blinded me to everything that day. He ignored me.

“I know what you’ve done today with your holdings in Dawson Pharma. You sold everything today, didn’t you? Removed yourself from the family.”

“How do you even know that?”

Connor shrugged. “I have sources. But I’m trusting you by even showing you the photo. See, that photo isn’t of Max, it’s of a boy called Laurence Lennox.”

“The name on the back.”

“I think he’s your brother’s son.”

I blinked at Connor, struck dumb. “Huh?” was the only coherent response I could muster as anguish fought with a flicker of hope in my chest.

“I have reason to believe Max had a son when he was at the Brothers of Chiron compound, and I think Laurence is that son.”

“Max had a son?” I repeated, and my chest tightened so much that my vision blurred.

“Yes.” Connor nodded.

“I’m an uncle?” Wonder pushed aside distrust and anger. I’d lost hope so long ago when Max had vanished; ten years he’d been gone, and then they’d found his remains, and told us he’d been dead for much of that time. For so long I’d imagined him out there living his life, and all that time he’d been dead. A sob caught in my throat, but the emotion forced to the surface was optimism, and then the tears fell again, and Connor gripped my hand.

I could be an uncle.

Sunday's Safe Word Shelf: What They Deserve by EM Denning

Summary:

Desires: New Beginnings #3
Jade has spent years searching for a place that feels right. After years spent circling the block with just about every Dom at Desires, they're finally wondering if they've reached a dead end.

Angelo moved to get a fresh start, post breakup. But the only thing he's done is sling drinks at the local kink club, Desires, and watching Jade burn through partners like fire. Angelo has never stepped foot into a playroom there with a submissive for himself, but that hasn't stopped him from thinking about it. And those thoughts all center on Jade.

His crush on the non-binary beauty turns into serious concern when Jade has a scene end with a safe word, and their mutual friend Steve is wary about letting Jade continue down their self-destructive path. In response to their friends' worry, Jade ghosts everyone, which only sparks more of the untapped dominance that has been simmering just beneath Angelo's skin. When Jade stops coming around altogether, Angelo takes it upon himself to do something about it. After all, the whole point of moving was to move on, and it's high time that Angelo did just that.

Can a rusty Dom like him be the soft landing that a jaded submissive like Jade is looking for?

1
JADE
Their shoulders ached from the way their arms were tied behind their back. The stretch was good, though. It settled Jade into themself and made everything quiet. If they shifted too much, the ropes tugged the hook that was buried deep in their ass. Jade let out a breath as slow as they could.

“Having trouble, cub?” Dave’s deep voice reverberated through Jade, making them tremble. Dave pulled on the rope that was attached to the anal hook. They cried out, rocking on the balls of their feet, feeling suddenly and deliciously unstable. Sweat beaded on the back of their neck and they felt a drop slide down between their shoulder blades.

“I asked you a question.”

“Sorry, Sir.” Jade took a deep breath. They could tell the scene was ending. Dave was an amazing dom and Jade half hoped to renegotiate a longer contract when this one came to its end in a month. Dave was gentle but firm. Rough without being brutal. He knew how to rig a rope and swing a flogger. He had hands made of steel and Jade loved being put through their paces by him.

“Your mind is wandering. Are you bored?”

Jade’s head snapped up, and they looked Dave in the eyes. “What? No.” Their chest suddenly felt too tight when Dave’s gaze softened. Until that point it felt like part of the game. Then Jade saw it, the same look they’d seen on the face of every Dom they’d ever had a scene with. The expression of impending doom.

They knew what was going to happen before Dave said another word. It was always the same. Jade, you’re a lot of fun, but I don’t see this going further. Jade, you’re a remarkable submissive, but you’re not bratty enough. You’re too bratty. Too much. Not enough. Too into the lifestyle.

Jade lowered their gaze and took a deep breath. They tried to get their head back in the scene. Dave even gave them a few minutes. He gently massaged Jade’s arms. He caressed his bare skin, but Jade’s willingness to submit had evaporated.

Jade lifted their head and looked Dave in the eyes. There was no point in prolonging the inevitable.

“Red.”

Dave nodded once and grabbed the safety shears. Jade was about to argue that he didn’t have to ruin perfectly good rope, but it was still Dave’s job to look after Jade for a few more minutes. Until Jade was free of the ropes. Then they could get the fuck out of there.

The anal plug popped loose, and the sudden emptiness was jarring. Another length of rope was cut and Jade could separate their arms and move them back down to their sides.

“Here, let me,” Dave carefully unwrapped Jade’s arms. He rubbed his hands over the rope marks and made Jade do a grip check by having them squeeze his fingers. “Let’s sit and talk, okay?”

Jade gathered their simple black shorts off the floor and stepped into them. Whatever arousal they’d built up had faded to nothing, leaving Jade feeling cold and unwelcoming.

“No thanks, Dave,” they faked a smile. “I know how this conversation is going to go.”

“Jade, sit,” Dave pointed to the bed. “Please.”

Jade shook their head. Had they worn a shirt? They couldn’t remember. Sometimes they did. Sometimes they didn’t. It was a sex club, clothing was optional, really. Jade fought the urge to reach for the doorknob. They knew they owed Dave the decency and the respect of having this conversation, but it didn’t change the fact that it was going to feel like rolling around in glass, then jumping in a pit of lemon juice.

“I’m fine standing, but maybe some water?” Jade wrapped their arms around their torso. They had a hoodie in their locker, and they couldn’t wait to slip into it. The club normally didn’t feel this cold. Maybe they were coming down with something. Or maybe they were just a big fucking baby who couldn’t hold on to a relationship or a dom.

Dave gave Jade a bottle of water and they cracked it open, drinking half like a good little submissive.

“I think you know we’re not a match, Jade.” Dave said softly. “It shouldn’t have to be this much work.”

Jade flinched like someone had slapped them. “That’s a new one.” Anger and sadness mixed in their stomach. They flushed all over, feeling weak and slightly sick.

“Maybe that came out wrong, but I just mean that it should be easier between us. More natural. Less forced.”

Jade snorted and twisted the cap back onto the bottle a little harder than necessary. The plastic crinkled in protest. “Right. You said that.”

“I’m fucking this up.” Dave stroked his fingers through his hair.

“It’s fine, Dave,” Jade said, feeling the furthest thing from. “It’s not like I can legally compel you to fulfill a kink contract. You’re free to go.” Their eyes cut to the door. “Am I?”

“I want to make sure you’re okay.” Dave took a step toward them, but Jade held up their hand, motioning for him to stop.

“I’m no longer your difficulty.”

“Jade, wait. Don’t leave upset like this.” Dave started after them, but they slid out the door and pulled it shut. The last thing Dave would do would be to follow them through the club, begging and pleading and making an ass of himself.

Jade hurried down the stairs, going as fast as they dared without drawing attention to their hasty exit. When they reached the bottom, they slowed their pace even more, skirting past a few familiar faces without being seen. They were nearly home free. The locker room entrance was only a few feet ahead. They were so close they could practically feel the softness of their hoodie.

“Jade, stop.”

Jade’s footsteps faltered, and their shoulders drooped. Steve stepped into view, broad, imposing, and unhappy.

“I’d like a word with you,” Steve said. He waited for Jade’s response; a solemn nod that might’ve been missed had he not expressly been looking for it. “Take them to my office, Matty. Get Angelo to bring some orange juice and grab a blanket for them.”

Jade scowled. The last thing they wanted was to be made to feel like an idiot in front of half the club. But it wasn’t half the club. Steve and Matty had seen Jade in all manner of states of emotion and arousal. The rest of the club was completely unaware of what was going on, except for a dejected-looking Dave, hovering off to the side, looking guiltier by the minute.

But Angelo would know. He’d see Jade all tied up in emotions and not pretty ropes, and they hated the way that made them feel. But they followed Matty anyway. They didn’t have a choice. Matty was like a golden retriever puppy, impossible to not like.

Matty slid his arm around Jade and tugged them expertly through the room in such an unassuming way that no one paid them any mind. He was good at it.

They came to the bar and Matty beckoned Angelo over. Jade might not be able to read Angelo, but it was clear from the look on his face that he could read Jade.  Concern passed over his face, just a flash before his usual aloof indifference slid into place. Jade added another tally to the list of people who didn’t think they were worth thinking about and averted their eyes. Anything was better than staring at Angelo’s impassable expression.

“Two OJ’s please, Angelo. And can you have the kitchen make a batch of disco fries for Jade?”

Jade looked at Matty, who had somehow learned their weakness. “I’m not hungry.”

“That’s fine. I am.” Matty grabbed the bottles of orange juice off the bar-top and tugged Jade down the back hallway and into Steve’s office.

Had it not had a computer sitting on an oversized, sturdy desk, it wouldn’t have looked like an office at all. The furniture was leather and comfortable. The walls painted a dark green, rather than the usual office eggshell white. Framed kinky pictures hung on the wall.

Matty pressed the glass of orange juice into Jade’s hand. He lifted the top of the ottoman and pulled out a humongous fuzzy blanket, and draped it around Jade’s shoulders before burrowing in next to them.

“Dave called us with the emergency phone.”

Jade whipped their head around and looked at Matty. “There wasn’t an emergency. He…” Jade cleared their throat. “We weren’t into it tonight, so I ended the scene. He cut me down and then we both agreed that we shouldn’t see each other in a dom/sub capacity anymore.”

“He said you were argumentative and refused aftercare. He just wants to make sure you’re okay.”

“I’m fine,” Jade’s voice cracked. Because of-fucking-course it did. They cleared their throat and looked away from Matty. “I’m okay. I just didn’t feel like a post, it’s not me, it’s you, break up snuggle. I want to go home.”

“It’s Dave’s duty, as the dom you were in a scene with, to look out for your safety. That’s all he was doing. It’s also Steve’s job to make sure his submissives are cared for. He’s interrogating Dave right now, making sure he didn’t cross any lines with you.”

Jade rolled their eyes. “Dave was fine. He didn’t do anything wrong. He’s good at what he does, we’re just not a good fit. Too bad we didn’t realize that before he had the anal hook in me and my arms strung up behind my back. It would’ve made getting out of there a lot easier.”

“I’m sorry, Jade.” Matty rubbed circles on Jade’s back. They almost asked him to stop, but then they realized they didn’t hate it. They believed Matty was sorry for the situation and not sorry for them. That Matty didn’t feel pity, but empathy was important.

Someone knocked softly on the door and Matty gave permission for entry.

Angelo walked in with a plate of steaming disco fries. Green onion and cheddar cheese, all melted dumped on top of a side of fries, heavy on the salt, super bad for you, and Jade’s favorite food.

Angelo set the fries down on the ottoman in front of Jade. “I had extra cheese added.”

Before Jade could formulate a response, Angelo was out the door. It opened a second later and Steve appeared. Thankfully without Dave. Jade understood why he did what he did, from the ending of the contract to tattling on him to Steve. That didn’t mean they had to like it.

Steve took a seat in an oversized chair opposite to Jade. “I talked to Dave. Now I want your side of the story.”

Jade took a deep breath and let out a huge sigh. Matty tried to pull him in closer, but Jade stiffened and Matty backed off.

“We were in a scene, and we weren’t into it. I called red, and he cut me down and made sure I was okay. We decided to not continue our contract. He wanted me to sit and talk, but I just wanted to go home.” Jade lifted their gaze and met Steve. The man could make people shit their pants with only a look, but he only had compassion for Jade.

“I understand that, but you freaked him out, Jade. He’s really worried about you. He wanted you to sit and talk with him for a few minutes. Aftercare is important to dominants as much as it is to submissives, even more so when something in a scene goes wrong. The protocols we have in place are to protect people.”

Jade nodded. “I understand.”

Steve raked a hand down his face. “I’m imposing a temporary restriction on you, Jade.”

The juice in their stomach soured. “What?”

“I’m not banning you. You’re free to come here, but for the next two months, you’re not allowed to play. No scenes. No negotiating for scenes once the restriction is lifted. I want you to come here as much as you do any other time, but maybe taking a step back will help readjust your perspective.”

“So, I’m not actually banned?” Jade could’ve cried in relief. It wasn’t a big deal to blow off the playrooms for a couple months. It wasn’t anything they hadn’t done before.

“No negotiating. No play rooms. You can attend public demonstrations as an observer. That’s it. Upstairs is off limits. I’ve already alerted the dungeon masters. Believe it or not, this isn’t a punishment, Jade.”

Jade scoffed and reached for the cheesy fries. Waste not, want not. The fries wouldn’t fill the empty hole inside of them, but they were salty and greasy and tasted nice. “I find that hard to believe. No offense, Sir. But you basically grounded me.”

“It’s for your own good.” Steve looked at them as though he were daring Jade to argue.

“Are you sure you’re not a daddy dom?” Jade popped another fry in their mouth. Truthfully, they felt horrible about bailing on Dave the way they did. They knew better. But Dave had looked at them with big sad eyes full of pity and they couldn’t take it. At least Steve had the decency to look stern and concerned and a little bit miffed, maybe.

“I’m positive. Eat your fries. Drink your juice. Speak to Dave before you leave.”

Jade sighed. “Could you send him in and give us a few minutes alone? I really do want to go home, but I’ll make things right with Dave first.”

Steve stood and clapped Jade on the shoulder. He gave it a friendly squeeze, like a proud dad approving of his kid’s change in behavior. “Thanks, Jade. If you need anything, you let me know.”

“I will. Thanks.” Jade watched Steve usher Matty out the door. Jade barely had a minute to gather their thoughts before Dave knocked and slipped into the office. He looked at Jade, his eyes full of sadness.

“I’m sorry, Jade.”

“Dave, sit down, please.” Jade patted the seat next to him and Dave sat down. Who said doms never took instructions? “I owe you an apology. I don’t do well with,” they waved their hand in the air. “This. You know. I’ve had a lot of doms not renew a contract with me. I’ve had some break it early. It’s fine. It’s part of this whole lifestyle thing, right? I just… I thought we’d have a few more weeks at least.” Jade sighed and took another fry. Despite the cheese, it just tasted like salty sadness.

“I really am sorry.”

Jade’s shoulders slumped under the weight of Dave’s apology. It was sincere, but it still sucked that he thought Jade was too much work. He was apologizing for not renewing the contract, but not for those words. He likely wasn’t aware of the impact the words had on Jade. They dug in under Jade’s skin like poisoned thorns.

Jade forced a smile. “It’s all right. I’d really like to get home. I’m tired and I think I’m coming down with something. Probably why I wasn’t really into it tonight.”

Dave’s face paled. “I can drive you.”

Jade shook his head. “Dave, thank you, but I’d rather call for a ride. I don’t live far.”

“At least let me pay.”

Jade acquiesced. They just wanted to go home and curl up in a bath and pretend that life didn’t completely fucking suck. “Are you going to be okay?” They asked Dave. It seemed like the right thing to do.

“I’ll be okay. I’ve just never had a submissive run out on me like that. It was alarming.”

Jade forced a smile. “I’m sorry about that.” They truly were sorrier than Dave would ever know because the reality had set in that Steve had put them on probation. No scenes for two months. No negotiating. No nothing.

After a deep breath, they reassured themself that it was nothing they couldn’t handle. They’d be fine.

Piece of cake.

Saturday's Series Spotlight: Haven's Cove by Jaclyn Quinn

Hard to Let Go #1
Summary:
Owen Richards lives a quiet life in his small hometown of Haven’s Cove. He has a rewarding life consisting of three very supportive—not to mention feisty—women, and a successful bakery that he owns and absolutely loves. Yet, Owen can't seem to shake this emptiness inside or the intense feeling that something is missing. A sudden encounter with a man from his past, one he despises, turns his entire world upside down. When Owen finds himself attracted to that sexy man, he questions everything, including his sanity. After all, only an incredibly disturbed person would find that he can’t stop thinking about his high school bully.

Brody Walker never expected to return to Haven’s Cove. He’s made a life for himself in Boston where he can truly be the person he was always meant to be. But an unexpected call has Brody facing all the demons he’d left behind so long ago. Now, he’s faced with not only a difficult goodbye, but one long overdue apology to a man who is no longer that lanky kid from high school. The challenge is to convince the guy he’s changed—and also prove he’s worth taking a chance on.

When passions ignite, truths are exposed, changing beliefs these men have held on to for years. Faced with the knowledge that things aren’t always what they seem, will they choose to hold on to the incredible thing they’ve found…or is it easier to give in to the fear and let go?

Hard to Get #2
Summary:
Gabe D’Angelo has it all. Designer clothes, luxury cars, a cool confidence most would envy, and a never-ending supply of money—and men. When he arrived in Haven’s Cove to be there for his best friend, he never imagined he’d end up extending his stay indefinitely. Small town living isn’t so bad after all, and the views are magnificent—especially the view of a sexy, rugged blond. But when that mysterious, brooding man refuses all Gabe’s advances, he is forced to take a step back and truly look at the person he’s become.

Nate Black moved from Boston to Haven’s Cove for his family. He’s missed small town living and the simple, tranquil life that comes with it. What he doesn’t bargain for is the pushy, spoiled playboy who’s set his eyes on Nate as his next conquest. Knowing this man has the potential to crack the foundation of his quiet life, Nate will do everything he can to protect his safe, closed-off world.

Is one man worth loving? Is the other worth the sacrifice? Or is the love they’re searching for not just hard to get but completely out of reach?

Hard to Hold #3

Hard to Let Go #1
Brody nodded his head and let his aunt Nora lead him down the hall. Had this hallway always been so damn long? The walls were lined with pictures. There were Brody’s school pictures, holidays, and family photos of the three of them smiling.

It was a hall full of lies.

As he crossed the threshold into the room, it was like breaking through a thick wall. His chest hurt and every muscle in his body tensed. He didn’t know what he was expecting, but it wasn’t this. A hospital bed was against the soft blue wall to his right; an IV stand with a bag hanging from a hook at the top blocked his view of his mother’s face. The room had the same beige carpet he remembered, but his father’s desk was replaced with a big reclining chair. There was another chair in the room on the far side of the bed. A small table on wheels sat next to it and on it were tissues, a pair of glasses, and the last thing he expected to see—a framed picture of him from when he was little. Next to that was an oxygen tank with tubing connected to it. The tubing led up to where it hooked around her ears to hold the small prongs in place in her nose. There were no big machines, no sounds of incessant beeping.

Then it really hit him. She wasn’t there to get better; she was there to let go. Brody stepped softly into the room, afraid to disturb her, afraid to breathe too heavily and throw off the serenity of her room.

Brody’s heart was trying to beat its way out of his chest. He felt a light touch from his aunt on his back, as if she was telling him it was going to be okay—even though they both knew it wouldn’t be. He walked to the side of the bed cautiously, praying he didn’t upset her if she didn’t want him there. As he lowered himself into the chair, his breath caught, and he looked into his mom’s eyes for the first time in too long. Oh God, was that panic in her eyes? Pain? He didn’t want to cause her either in her final days.

“Brody? Honey, is it really you?” Her voice was so soft, but there was no mistaking the words as a tear slid down her cheek, and her eyes had a sudden light.

Just like that, Brody released the breath he’d been holding and let the tears fall down his face. “Yeah, Mom. It’s me. I’m here.”

Hard to Get #2
Gabe sighed again, rolling his eyes. “My God, did the four of you have a Nate Protection Plan meeting I wasn’t invited to? I assure you, I’m harmless. I’m also pretty sure that Nate is a grown man who doesn’t need protection—unless it’s a condom. Then I fully condone it and will even offer my services in the Sheathing Department.” Gabe winked. “He can thank me later.” He held the beer bottle in the crook of his left arm and patted Jonah’s cheek. “Wish me luck.” Then he walked around Jonah and headed for his target.

Nate didn’t disappoint tonight; that was for sure. The guy made a pair of jeans the sexiest material ever to fit on a man’s strong body. Long legs, strong muscled thighs, unmistakable well-endowed bulge covered in denim. It made Gabe want to get down on his knees and find out what hid beneath the denim—with his tongue. Nate’s broad chest was screaming to be released from the tightly stretched black cotton T-shirt. Tell me the man doesn’t know what he’s doing to me in that outfit?

“You’re staring.” Two plump, well-defined lips uttered the words—none too kindly—and Gabe blinked, snapping out of his stupor.

Shit, was there drool on his chin? He’d been undressing the man with his eyes. “Sorry, bad habit. Another beer?” Gabe held up the bottle to Nate, and as he expected, was quickly shot down.

“No, thanks,” Nate said, obviously irritated, not even looking in Gabe’s direction.

“Tell me, Mr. Black, do you have a problem with all tall, dark, and handsome men, or is it just me who ruffles that blond hair of yours?” Gabe asked. His voice was low and seductive as he moved in a little closer to Nate.

Nate turned his face to look at Gabe and snickered. “Tell me, Mr. D’Angelo, do you have a problem with rejection in general, or is it just the fact that I’m not interested that rubs your conceited ego the wrong way?”

TouchΓ©.

Gabe smiled wickedly and moved a little closer, letting his hot breath caress Nate’s ear as he whispered, “Trust me. There isn’t a wrong way to rub me. When you’re ready to admit you want to, we can make this interesting.”

Nate moved in even closer, the heat from his body making Gabe’s cock dance with glee. Nate’s lips and the scruff of his goatee brushed up against Gabe’s ear, sending a delicious chill down his spine. “Why don’t you hold your breath,” Nate pulled back abruptly, “and see where that gets you.” With a look of disgust, he walked away.

“Well, that went well,” Gabe said to no one in particular. He had to laugh at the situation or he’d explode. If he were smart he’d get over it, realize the man was a waste of time, and find someone more willing to tickle his fancy—and other parts of his anatomy. Hell, he could be back in the city with a man filling him so good by the end of the night.

Too bad he wasn’t a smart man.

Hard to Hold #3
It was still pretty light outside, but Cameron was standing in mostly darkness, the only light now coming from the stairs. Taking a deep breath, he once again reminded himself of the promise he’d made to Dr. Sampson and to himself to face things head on. Time to find out what the hell I did wrong. He took the stairs slowly, steadily breathing in and out as he got to the landing in front of Jonah’s door. He glanced down the stairs to the exit, then took one last chest filled breath, lifted his hand, and knocked on the door.

“Come in,” Jonah called out and with a shaking hand, Cameron opened the door.

Hesitantly, Cameron walked in, scanning the small space for Jonah who was standing across the room by a table with his back to the door.

“Don’t tell me the lock is sticking again. I’ll have to complain to my land...” Jonah turned around, and the smile left his face, “lord. Cameron... Sorry, thought you were Gabe, who also happens to be my landlord.” Jonah gripped the back of his neck and gave a small laugh. Was he nervous?

Panic flooded Cam. What the hell he was thinking? The uneasy look on Jonah’s face reminded him, though. He cleared his throat, rubbed his palms on his jeans and said in a shaky voice, “Didn’t mean to bother you so late. I just... Well, I have a question.”

Jonah plastered the fake smile on his face that Cameron was starting to hate. “What’s up?”

Cameron looked back toward the door, his need to find the exit in any situation like a thorn in his side and a comfort at the same time. He opened and closed his trembling hands, took a deep breath, and finally asked, “What did I do?”

Jonah was clearly confused. “I’m sorry?”

Balling his hands into fists, Cameron drew strength from the tightness and asked again. “What did I do wrong?” He looked down at his fists, slowly uncurling his fingers, and began fidgeting with his hands. “I mean, I obviously did something wrong because you’ve been really weird with me for days. In fact, you’ve been pretty quiet, but for the life of me, I can’t figure out what I did.” Holy shit. Did all of that really just come out of his mouth? It suddenly hit Cameron that Jonah treating him differently was bothering him more than he realized. Enough to actually speak up for once in his goddamn life and ask why.

Jonah’s look of shock confirmed that...yes, he really had just said all that. He ran the hand that had been gripping the back of his neck up through his blond hair then back down to his neck. Jonah walked over to the couch and sat down. Slowly, he leaned over, resting his elbows on his thighs then looked back up at Cameron. The desperate sadness in Jonah’s gaze definitely threw Cameron off.

“Shit, Cam, I’m sorry. I was trying to not make you feel uncomfortable, and instead, I went completely to the other end of the spectrum.”

“Huh?” Jonah had used his nickname, the same one Ali had used only days before. He hadn’t liked when Ali called him Cam, but when Jonah said it, it made him feel warm. It felt…intimate. Jonah patted the cushion next to him, and Cameron found himself walking over and sitting down without a second thought. “Why would you think you were making me uncomfortable?” he asked, still completely confused.

“Because you’re always so nervous around me. You... Do you know you barely look at me? I thought― Ah, it’s so stupid when I think about it now. Just ignore me. You’ve done absolutely nothing wrong…a bit of a distraction…but nothing wrong.”

I have been an artist from a very young age. From drawing cartoon characters and evolving into portraits, making jewelry, photography, and now writing. I have an amazing support system in my family and friends and couldn’t be more grateful.

I live in central New Jersey, love summers at the Jersey Shore, rock music, wine, sexy men, and laughing a lot with my amazing friends and family. Sunday dinners at my parents’ house are crazy, hysterical and you can count on a movie quote…or ten…being thrown out. Insults between siblings is how we show our love for each other!

When I’m not creating, you can find me reading books from my favorite authors. I’m a hopeless romantic, starving for passionate characters and always craving that happy ending, whether in reading or in writing my own books.
