💻Blogger Review💻: Star Wars The High Republic Phase 3 Vol. 1 - Children of the Storm by Cavan Scott



Summary:
Collecting STAR WARS: THE HIGH REPUBLIC (2023) #1-4 and material from STAR WARS: REVELATIONS (2023).

STAR WARS: THE HIGH REPUBLIC returns for its explosive Phase III! A year after the destruction of Starlight Beacon, Marchion Ro and the Nihil stand victorious! The once-mighty Jedi are outclassed, the Republic is on its knees, and Keeve Trennis leads a desperate assault against an invading force on the edges of the galactic frontier! The odds are stacked against her, but a Jedi always clings to hope. The Force is with her…right? Not so fast! Because the Nihil are allying themselves with the Hutts, and the galaxy just became an even more dangerous place. Past missions come back to haunt the Jedi, and familiar faces return - but not as they used to be! Who - or what - is the Child of the Storm? 





Blogger Note: This is the first time I've ventured into The High Republic timeframe in any form so I can't speak to it's connection to anything before these graphic novel collections nor any connection to the new Disney series, The Acolyte, so I'll just review as is. (EDITED NOTE: I have since discovered the chronological order and that I have read a couple out of that order. However, like the movies long as you are able to read a particular story arc together the rest isn't that important, just something to keep in mind.)

I'll point out that unlike my edited blogger note above, only V1 is currently available for this the Phase 3 story arc with V2 scheduled to be released in November.  Having said that, I loved V1: Children of the Storm.  We see Keeve Trennis trying to move forward a year out from the destruction of Starlight Beacon and navigating the current state of the Republic, the Jedi, and the Galaxy as a whole all the while still reeling from the loss(perhaps, perhaps not) of her former master, Master Sskeer.

I'll admit, had I realized V2 wouldn't be out until November I may have waited to read V1 but I didn't until after I had started and I just couldn't stop.  So good, so entertaining, so heart-hurting and yet still all the delicious fun that I've come to expect and enjoy from the Star Wars Universe.  Is it November yet?😉

He is currently developing a number of original comic book and television properties. 

Before becoming a full-time writer, Cavan was a magazine editor for Future Publishing in the UK, launching a number of successful magazines including Countryfile, based on the hit BBC One series.

A member of The Society of Authors and the Horror Writer's Association, Cavan lives in the west of England with his wife and two daughters. His passions include learning the concertina, folklore, the music of David Bowie, and scary movies. He builds far too much LEGO.

💻Blogger Review💻: Star Wars The High Republic Phase 2 Vol. 2 - Battle for the Force by Cavan Scott



Summary:
Collects Star Wars: The High Republic (2022) #6-10.

The battle of Jedha continues! As Tey Sirrek defends the Temple of the Kyber, Vildar Mac is buried alive - with only his belief in the Force to keep him alive. Battle for the Force picks up right where Balance ended and the story just gets better and better. I had my doubts about some of the characters but when all was said and done, they did what was needed.  Allies, friends, enemies, and sometimes a combo of all three further the Battle of Jedha in a way that at times surprises you but others give you a sense of calm relief in there expectedness.

I know that Phase 3 returns to tell us what happened after Starlight fell and though Phase 2 actually went back in the timeline(which might confuse some) I still found myself rivetted to my seat to see how everything and everyone played out.  I was not disappointed.

💻Blogger Review💻: Star Wars The High Republic Phase 2 Vol. 1 - Balance of the Force by Cavan Scott



Summary:
Collects STAR WARS: THE HIGH REPUBLIC (2022) #1-5.

A new chapter begins! One hundred and fifty years before the fall of Starlight, another beacon burns bright in the galaxy - a beacon of faith and spirituality. Jedha. The Pilgrim Moon. The Kyber Heart. But tensions are rising in the holy city, and dark days are to come. Jedi Vildar Mac, safe and secure in who he is and what he could be, arrives just as Jedha's fragile peace begins to crumble. With one Jedi lying dead in an ancient shrine, another takes up the murderer's trail. Who is using ancient Force powers on the streets of the holy city? Why are sacred relics going missing? And why do all roads lead to the Temple of the Whills?

As mentioned in my blogger note above, I did not know Phase 2 is actually set a century+ before Phase 1 but also as mentioned above, I was able to read the complete Phase 2 storyline all was good, the out-of-order was no problem. 

What I loved most was seeing the variety of Force followers of different faiths with different names and the inclusion of the Whills was just icing on the cake.  Seeing those force-varieties bickering and falling into said bickering traps was intriguing and fresh.

There's mystery, new acquaintances, allies or perhaps not-so-allies😉, humor, basically Balance of the Force is definitely deserving of the Star Wars moniker and yet another intriguing piece of the SW Universe puzzle that pulls you in and keeps you hooked. So many stories to be told, gaps to fill in, and I look forward to discovering them all.

💻Blogger Review💻: Star Wars The High Republic Phase 1 Vol. 3 - Jedi's End by Cavan Scott & Charles Soule

Jedi's End is the conclusion of this graphic novel collection trilogy(as far as I know as I'm new to the High Republic timeline) and I think it is darker than the other 2 and yet still fun as only Star Wars can be.  We kind of get 2 for the price of 1 in this collection.  We see Jedis Keeve Trennis and Avar Kriss continue to battles and storyline from the previous entries but we also see how Nihil leader Marchion Ro came to power.  I found both to be very compelling, entertaining, and worthy of the Star Wars moniker.  I look forward to delving more into the High Republic timeline.

Charles Soule
Based in Brooklyn, New York, Charles Soule has written novels, comics, screenplays and stories of all types. He is the author of Strange Attractors, 27, Strongman and Letter 44, as well as runs on Swamp Thing, Red Lanterns and Superman/Wonder Woman for DC Comics. Also a musician and an attorney, Soule somehow finds time to be one of the busiest writers in comics: Among his Marvel credits are Thunderbolts, She-Hulk and Inhuman — as well as the landmark Death of Wolverine, its immediate follow-up (Wolverines) and its eventual sequel (Return of Wolverine). Soule charted the adventures of a much-loved Star Wars characters in Lando and Poe Dameron.
